Black and white photograph featuring a portrait of writer and philologist, J.R.R. Tolkien, author of "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" and regarded as one of the most influential authors of all time, as taken in a hallway at Merton College in Oxford, England. Tolkien was a scholar and professor at Oxford University, in addition to a member of Oxford's Inklings literary group, and after his retirement in 1959 and his wife's later death in 1971, he moved back to Oxford and took up residence in a set of rooms provided by Merton College as an Emeritus Fellow, where he lived until his death in September 1973.
