Tolkien, author of "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" and regarded as one of the most influential authors of all time, as taken in a hallway at Merton College in Oxford, England. Tolkien was a scholar and professor at Oxford University, in addition to a member of Oxford's Inklings literary group, and after his retirement in 1959 and his wife's later death in 1971, he moved back to Oxford and took up residence in a set of rooms provided by Merton College as an Emeritus Fellow, where he lived until his death in September 1973.
