Starting in the mid 1980's, Rhem began to question some of the traditional Christian dogma that he had been espousing from the pulpit. Rhem Christ Community Church Spring Lake, Michigan July 25, 1999 Transcription of the spoken sermon This spring I had several messages on the general theme, "The Varieties of Religious Experience," and, thinking about that, I was reminded again of the fact that that is precisely true, there is a variety of religious experience. The variety is determined somewhat by the way one is raised or nurtured, but on the other hand, there is a certain something in all of us that makes us more attuned to one approach than another. That is the impossibility of a congregation at worship because you have all kinds of people who respond differently to different stimuli and out of different backgrounds with different nurture, and then one tries to weave that all together. Some of you who have been with me for a long time know that some years ago it was a very telling moment for me when at a seminar at McCormick Seminary in Chicago, a Presbyterian school, they brought the venerable old Lutheran theologian Joseph Sittler in as a guest lecturer, and he was needling the Presbyterians there, thinking that they were all Presbyterians there, which I suppose most of them were, and he said, "You know, you Presbyterians always route it through the head, always approach through the mind, in an intellectualistic approach to faith, whereas the Catholic tradition is more of an intuitive approach using symbols, sacraments, incense." (We used incense here once but everyone started coughing; we have to get accustomed to incense before we can use it full-blown.) When I came home from that seminar, it was a moment of awareness for me to realize that there was actually more than one legitimate way to worship and some people can be approached more fruitfully in one way and some in another, and I thought to myself, "Why must one choose?" and from that moment on it has been our intention here to weave a tapestry of worship in such a way that there are those moments when various people can be approached, where the entré to different kinds of responses to religious stimuli can be honored, moments when the word is addressed, as now, which has been the characteristic of our tradition, but an enrichment of the rest of the service so there are those moments, even moments of silence. Marcus Borg, when he was here, thought we were a bit wordy, although he affirmed our worship, but he spoke, perhaps you will remember, even for a place of silence in worship. © Grand Valley State University   �Word That Wounds and Heals Richard A. Rhem Page 2   We have been a wordy people, and it has been the tradition that has shaped me, and consequently, the tradition that shapes this congregation probably most forcefully. I want to look at that this morning; I want you to think with me about the word that wounds and heals, and in so doing, I go to Hosea because the Hebrew prophets were the ones who majored in this idea of the word of God as a word of address. In fact, that is that which distinguished Israel from its neighbors at the time, and the conception of the word of God spoken through the human voice is a conception that formed and shaped the people of Israel. The eighth century prophets, particularly, were these marvelous expositors of a word of God in the midst of the concrete historical situation. The prophetic ministry of the Church, the address to the world in its time and in its context derives from that Hebrew prophetic tradition, Hosea, certainly one of the best. I love him because of the things that I read this morning, a selective reading. I could have gone anywhere in the prophetic corpus of the Hebrew scriptures, but I read Hosea because there is so clearly the wounding word and the healing word, and the word of God ought always to be understood to be wounding and healing, and wounding in order to heal. There is no purpose in a wounding word of God that does not bring, finally, the word of grace and healing. Hosea had to confront the northern kingdom in the last period of their existence before the Assyrian empire removed them in 722 B.C.E. Hosea prophesied in a time of public turmoil, social unrest, the exploitation of the poor and the vulnerable. In that sense, Hosea’s ministry was very much like most of the other Hebrew prophets. They called Israel to account for its failure to live faithfully in covenant with God and to have justice mark their social life. And so, he called Israel to repent. It’s time to break up the fallow ground. It’s time to sow righteousness and reap the steadfast love of the Lord, and in the 12th chapter there is a summary, as it were, Hosea being the spokesperson for God, who speaks about how tenderly God had nurtured Israel when Israel was in Egypt, "I called my son," and how he picked him up and how he fed him and how he cared for him and how he nurtured him, and then the statement, "But Israel continues to turn away." They turn away and so they’re going to go back into exile. Once again they are going to become the victims of Assyria; they are going to go back to Egypt. "I’m done with them," God says. Then those very tender words, "How can I give you up? How can I give you up? I can’t give you up. A human being would give you up, but I’m not human; I am God." The closing verses of the 14th chapter speak about Israel flowering as a garden with the dew of heaven falling upon it, the fragrance of Lebanon’s wines marking it, a picture of the healing. "I will heal you of your faithlessness." I use that only illustratively. It is characteristic of the prophetic word. It is a word that exposes. It is a word that tells the truth. It is a word that calls a spade a spade. It is a word that makes us uneasy, uncomfortable in our ambiguity and equivocation of our lives. It is a word that exposes our self-centeredness, our selfishness. It is a word that calls us to right living, to the practice of justice and to © Grand Valley State University �Word That Wounds and Heals Richard A. Rhem Page 3   the ministry of mercy. It is a word that addresses us in our humanness and tells us in the name of God to clean up our act, to get on with the work, to do the task, whatever it may be, in whatever concrete situation, wherever there is compromise, with our accountability to the faithful God. There the word of God in public address dresses us down, but only for our own good, only in order to say to us, "I’ll never let you go. The steadfast love of the Lord will never let you go." It is a word that wounds and heals, and it wounds, not taking any satisfaction in the wounding, but in order to awaken, in order to break through to the dullness of a heart of stone, in order to call us up short, in order that we might be consciously embraced, conscious of that unconditional love that will keep us forever. That is the prophetic task of the prophetic word of God in the midst of the people of God. I use Hosea, as I said, simply as an illustration of that which has shaped and marked our tradition, that which is a big part of our Sunday morning experience. I have in your liturgies a rather extended excerpt from an address of Karl Barth in 1922. Now, that is Karl Barth. When you look at the bibliographical reference, I want you to know that Karl is not Carl, but Karl. Karl Barth cannot be with a "C." And it is Barth, but there’s an "h" on the end, and we knock the h out of Karl Barth. In the European pronunciation, the h is silent, but when I looked at that, Carl Bart, I thought, "Oh, my gosh. I am embarrassed. I am humiliated. I don’t want one of those to go anywhere out of this church." I want you to take them home and read them several times, but I want you to change it to Karl Barth. I thought everybody knew about Karl Barth, but my mistake. I should have faxed it in. I did it on the telephone. It’s correct phonetically, but don’t let anybody know we did that. Anyway, Karl Barth was probably the greatest theologian of the 20th century, and where did his theology come from? Where does this huge production come from? It came from the task of preaching. Karl Barth, in the early part of this century, graduated from the finest European institutions of learning. He was deeply indebted to and steeped in the culture of Europe, and he went to a little Swiss village to preach. He got into the pulpit, this highly educated, highly cultured genius and brilliant man, and he had nothing to say, and he began to struggle with the word of God. His theology, the Bartian theology, was called the theology of the word because, in his experience of having to preach, he found he had nothing to say, and when you have nothing to say and you have to preach, you’re in deep trouble. So, Barth began to study and he studied the Epistle to the Romans and after ten years of preaching in this village and working with a good friend, seriously wrestling with the faith, he published The Epistle to the Romans. It started such a stir that he was asked to come and speak about his theology to a ministers’ conference. He was embarrassed by the very thought, and he said, "I don’t have a theology. I have a theology just like it came to me, nurtured through my teachers until I had to preach, and then I needed something to say, and I began to study and think biblically and theologically in order for the sermon on Sunday morning." © Grand Valley State University �Word That Wounds and Heals Richard A. Rhem Page 4   You see, there’s really nothing that is more important than this moment. Now, I said a moment ago that I recognize a variety of religious experience and more and more I have come to appreciate the aesthetic and the sacramental and the silence. That is so terribly important. Maybe God can even touch us more easily then, I don’t know. Maybe it would be better if I would shut up, but for better or for worse, this is the moment of the sermon, this is the moment of the address of the word of God and I want to say to you it is a terribly important moment. Karl Barth recognized that his people were coming and he needed to have something to say, and he came to realize that all theology ought to be nothing more than in service of the sermon in order at this moment we can have something to say. He speaks about Sunday morning, about the strange architecture of the place, the furniture, the appointments, and then the expectation. Oh, he recognizes that maybe someone came lazily, lollygagging in, not really expecting anything, and yet, he said, the whole situation speaks of expectation. Some event, some event in the past or perhaps in the future, some event, God is present. And then he says here is presumption, here is daring - one prays, someone begins to preach, and it’s done on the conviction that God is present. That is what this moment is about - that God is present. Barth says the people come with a question, and the question is, "Is it true?" He says that the preacher had better understand people better than the people understand themselves. The preacher better know that down in the depths of the human heart and soul there’s a question that says, "Is it true?" In other words, can I live with trust? Can I believe, somehow or other in the midst of the world that has gone crazy with all of the darkness, where in Kosovo 14 farmers baling hay are shot at close range, where there continues to be this vengeful cycle of revenge, the violence where it’s symptomatic of the human condition, where I look into the human soul, I look into my own heart and I see the darkness there, the compromise there. I see the ambiguity there. I see the self-centeredness there, I see all of that which keeps me from fulfilling that calling of God, that beckoning of the spirit. Is it true? Is anything true? Is God at all here? Is God present? Can God be trusted? Is God involved at all in the world, in history, in nature, in my life? Barth says that’s what Sunday morning is all about. That’s what this moment is all about. The people have come and even when they don’t realize it, even when they just come because it’s Sunday morning and haven’t even thought about it, even when they come with very little conscious expectation, down deep in their heart, he says, there’s a question - Is it true? Can God be trusted? Is God? Is it true? Karl Barth says Sunday morning is that moment in which all theology should be focused in order to give the preacher something to say and to be able to touch that deep place in the human heart where there’s doubt and fear and anxiety, deep questions, where there’s a cry, "Is it true?" Rhem Page 5   I came across this work of Barth when I was in Europe and if I had ever been tempted at all, following post-graduate study, to go into the academic community, I think it was this piece plus Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s Letters and Papers From Prison that convinced me that this is the most important place in the world and this is the most important hour of the week, this hour, preaching. My God, it’s important, people. Do you realize how important it is? Presumptuous. Daring. One flawed and failing human being trying to say a word that is the word of God. That’s what Calvin understood it to be, and Barth, in following Calvin, clarified very, very nicely the three forms of the word of God, the center of it all the word made flesh: the word made flesh, the word of God embodied, and all of Israel’s prophetic word, words of anticipation, and all of the apostolic witness following the word of recollection or remembrance. So, there’s the word in flesh and the word written, but then, here’s daring, the preached word, and the preached word is nothing more or less than the word of God updated for this place and this time and this people. Even when we read Hosea’s words, we’re reading an 8th century prophet into which have been layered some 6th century words because the 8th century prophet became the text for a 6th century preacher, and the text now that we have in 1999 is the text of the word of God written out of the 8th century Before the Common Era, and the 6th century Before the Common Era, and here it is 1999 and it becomes the occasion for the preaching of the word in this place at this time, because the word preached is the updating of the word written that is spoken on the word in flesh, because Barth understood so clearly that revelation is always an event. You don’t have revelation in a book; you don’t have revelation in an institution; you don’t have revelation in a confessional creed; the word of God speaks. God reveals God. Never at our disposal. Never to put in our pocket. Never for us to domesticate and have in a neat little box, packaged. The word of God will speak when God will speak, and when the human voice is speaking a word of address based on a written text pointing to the word in flesh, it just might happen. And it might not. It probably doesn’t happen more often than it happens. But, that’s why this is such an electric moment. That’s why this could potentially be a world turning upside down, transforming moment for someone, and who knows how it will happen, because the Spirit blows where it will. But when the word made flesh, witnessed to by the word written, becomes the text for a word of address, it just might happen. Even here and now someone might see a rift in the sky, someone whose burden is heavy might feel it lift, someone might see a light in the darkness, someone might feel themselves exposed, laid bare in all their selfishness compromised and all of the flawedness of their existence, someone might cry out, "God, be merciful to me, a sinner," someone might say, "I heard the voice today that said, ‘I will heal your faithlessness; I’ll never give you up.’" I don’t know how it happens, when it happens, but I know that it is absolutely serious and critical that it happens where we find an honest word today. Will you find it in the political arena? Why can we not pass campaign reform? Is it not © Grand Valley State University �Word That Wounds and Heals Richard A. Rhem Page 6   because our political system is for sale? Where has the word "spin doctor" come from? Do we believe anything we hear, or is it always something with a spin, or an ulterior motive satisfied by an ambition for human acquisition or aggrandizement, for the undercutting of something or other, for the setting up of a project or a person? Is there any truth in the land? There had better be truth here. Do I presume to be one without bias or prejudice? Of course not. That’s the presumption of preaching. But I had better not speak a word that I speak not consciously before the face of God. If there is to be truth to be told in the earth, then it must be told here, where there is nothing to gain, where there is no ulterior motive but the well-being of humankind and the glory of God and the mending of creation. The religious right has joined the political game. Recently Ed Dobson of Calvary Undenominational, and Cal Thomas, the journalist, wrote a book about Blinded By Power, because when the Church gets enmeshed in those structures, then it has another agenda, then it can’t tell the truth. Only the free pulpit and a free person who has nothing but the concern to speak a word from God is the salvation of the world. It is here that you can still hear a word of truth, in spite of the flawed nature of the voice, but the voice is tied to the text and points to the one, and your deep question, "Is it true?" can be answered from the written word that pointed to the word in flesh that lived out the fact, "Yes, it’s true. God is love. A fierce love that will expose you only in order, finally, to heal you." I don’t know of another stop along your way this week where you have a better chance of hearing the word of God than in this hour, and that’s why you come, and it’s that word in which you can trust, and by God, it’s tough. It’s presumptuous. It’s daring, and it doesn’t get any easier, because I take it so seriously, do you know that? Isaiah 55:11 While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. Acts 10:44 If you have any important summer events for which the weather is important, don’t talk to me. This is a day of the Rhem Reunion - thundershowers predicted at noon - just when the grill is getting really hot. (Laughter) But, it’s a pleasure to have so many of my family here: aunts, sisters, brothers-in law, nieces and nephews, and the lower generation. Nancy and I are especially grateful this morning that we have six kids in church. Pretty good, huh? Good introduction for a sermon on population control, of course. But we didn’t know what the other was doing for a long time - I mean, before we met. (Laughter) I had better get to preaching. As a matter of fact the sermon does have something to do with population control. Population control is really only one dimension, but the planet earth is in trouble. There is a crisis in the world, a crisis in the universe. And it is being recognized on many fronts. Last month there was a world-class summit, the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro where the leaders of the nations gathered to discuss the whole situation of the environment, of the state of the planet. The United Nations sponsored the conference on the environment and development but that’s where the rub is. The resources of the earth are being used up and consumed at a greater rate than the earth in its own natural cycle can replenish itself. The human race has done great damage to ecology from time immemorial, but it was rather localized and the population was not that great. But today, for the first time, population being what it is and technology being what it is, we are as a matter of fact outstripping the resources of the earth. There is a crisis on planet Earth and it is serious, and it is a matter of universal human concern, and it is a matter of concern to biblical Christians, to biblical people. © Grand Valley State University   �The Word, a Means of Grace… Richard A. Rhem Page 2   Now sometimes issues like this tend to become trendy and band wagon issues, and there are those nuts on the lunatic fringe that tend to turn us off and to offend us. Apart from them, of course, our attention would not be grasped. But sometimes they also enable us to write the issue off and to say, “Well, that’s just a matter of a few nuts, and it doesn’t really concern us.” Well, I want to say this morning that it does really concern us, and the situation is serious. The conference was held in Rio de Janeiro last month, but last year in Cambera, Australia at an assembly of the World Council of Churches there was a major focus on justice and peace, and the integrity of creation. The integrity of creation has become one of those catch words in our day as the Church has come to recognize the serious dimensions of the environmental crisis. Justice and peace, and the integrity of creation are major foci of the Church’s thinking and reflection today, and well they should be. I suppose that there are some of you here who really get turned off with all of the claptrap about the environment as though it were a non-issue. You would probably like to spit at a spotted owl, or what was that silly fish that held up the building of the dam in Tennessee? Maybe it is still held up, I don’t know. Satire can make a laughing matter of such environmental concerns. However, we cannot simply sidestep this issue. I felt that our own president lost an opportunity for world leadership in Rio at that conference. I heard his rationale for our foot-dragging. He said, “After all, the United States has done more than any other nation on these issues.” True. He said, “The United States has spent more billions of dollars than any other nation on these issues.” True. And he said, “We don’t have a lot of money for these issues.” True, I suppose. But, let’s be honest folks. This perspective was given to me by my friend Ernie Campbell, who is a fellow pastor and writes some notes quarterly, who said, “You know it is rather difficult to make an impact on the world when you are the powerful and the affluent of the world.” For example, he says, it is a shame that the rain forests in the Amazon basin are being decimated. But how impressive is it when we sent our lecture down to the Amazon basis from our four, five and six bedroom houses with three, four and six bathrooms all nicely sided with cedar shakes? And how much will we be believed as we lecture the world on the virtues of riding a bicycle as we step out of our Mercedes or Chevrolets, as the case may be? And, will we really be heard when we suggest to the peoples of the world that it is necessary to conserve energy when we sit here in air conditioned comfort in the coolest church in town? (Laughter) You see it is awfully easy to be self righteous. As Ernie Campbell said, “It reminds me of the time when I was a kid and we used to play King on a Hill,” and he said, “when I got to the top after clawing my way up I wanted to say ‘Stop the game. Freeze the position. Now that we are at the top, let’s everybody act responsibly.’” I hope there will be some technological breakthrough, some way in which we will expand the resources of the earth beyond our fondest dream. They were up there in space long enough recently to maybe have brought back a crop of tomatoes. Who knows what potential there is in the cosmos for the meeting of human needs to make life sustainable on the planet? But in the meantime, the crisis is there. It is our responsibility and it is up to us either to pay the tab or to wind down our consumption and simplify our lives. It simply won’t wash to lecture the Third World on environmental preservation and conservation while we go blithely on our way, the greatest consumers that the world has ever known. But you know, the issue is greater than a matter of human survival. The real issue is that we have not valued and cared for God’s good creation. God created the heavens and the earth, and God looked it all over and God said, “It’s very good.” And God rested on the seventh day and luxuriated in the wonder of the worlds to which he had given birth. Creation is God’s and we are called to value it, and to bless it, and to bless the Creator in the blessing of creation. It is not ours. It is really a relatively recent thing that the human race has raped the earth and treated it as an object at our disposal. You can trace it back to the 18th century, to the Enlightenment. The same kind of philosophical thinking and experimentation that has led to such fruitfulness in the natural sciences has also led us to view the whole planet and the cosmic reality as that over against which we can have dominion, and we can manipulate, and we can use and abuse, that we can exploit for our own purposes. It is almost as though we have in mind that the earth and the plants, and the animals, and the sky and the sea exist for us, for the satisfaction of our wants and our desires, for our pleasure. We have failed to see our connectedness with all that is alive. We have failed to see ourselves in the continuum of creative reality and through the Industrial Revolution, in our consumer society, we have raped the earth; we have abused creation; we are outstripping the resources presently available to us. And it is high time that we question the whole modern approach to the world that has made it a “thing” to be used. It is high time that we get off our highhorse, anthropocentrically looking at reality as though it is there for us and failing to see ourselves as a part of the linkage of life. We have to get back to a biblical understanding of things. God created the heavens and the earth, and God blessed creation. Maybe you say to me, “But doesn’t it say in Genesis 1, at the end of the chapter, that God said, “Be fruitful and multiply and have dominion over creation?” It does. And there may have been a day when that was God’s word, but that word dominion dare not be used today because that word dominion, which could mean to rule as a servant, has come to mean to dominate and to have dominion over, and to exploit. The dominion model won’t work today. Most who look at these things and who study these things biblically have moved to a stewardship model. God has made us stewards of the earth. We are the trustees of creation. We are called to preserve, to conserve, to care for the created order. © Grand Valley State University �The Word, a Means of Grace… Richard A. Rhem Page 4   But there are some who are saying we need to go even farther than that, that stewardship, although it calls to mind human dignity and the agency of the human person in the whole creation of things and their operation and accords a certain dignity to the human person created in the image of the person of God; nonetheless, stewardship in our day, in the light of the crisis, even gives us still too much of that over-againstness. It is being suggested by some today – and it comes out of a rich, ancient Christian church heritage in the Eastern tradition – it is being suggested today that we think in terms, not of dominion, not even of stewardship, but of a sacramental model. That we begin to see creation as that stuff of reality that becomes for us alive with God, that creation becomes the material tangibly that conveys to us the knowledge of God and the grace of God, that we see the whole of creation as alive with the life of God. So that, just as bread and cup and water have become vehicles of grace, tangible material things, outward signs of inward and spiritual reality, so we begin to look at our world that way. A sacramental model of reality would see the world as a pointer to the Creator and all of creation, drawing forth from us praise and doxology. That we develop “Epiphany Eyes” in order to see through created reality and to recognize as the Psalmist said, “That all life is alive with the breath of God.” Apart from the breath of God there is no life. “You breathe and give them life,” he says. And so the whole created order needs to be recognized more and more as alive with divinity. I love to sit on the bluff and listen to the surf. When it is a gentle surf, the constant lapping of the waves in rhythmic regularity reminds me of a cosmic breathing. Breathing in and breathing out. Breath, spirit, the cosmos pulsating with the life that is the life of God and, therefore, the whole of created reality, a pointer to the creator, drawing forth worship and praise. How will we ever be able to develop such a sense? Is it not by observing Sabbath? Is it not by heeding the biblical word, the call to observe Sabbath in the Old Testament where the law, (and incidentally we speak of the Ten Commandments or the Law, but the better word is the Torah, which meant to the Hebrew a way of life), the way of life in Exodus 20, and the way of life in Deuteronomy 5 both called Israel, both call us, to observe Sabbath. But in the case of Deuteronomy it was to observe Sabbath to remember the redemption from Egypt. In Exodus 20 the call to remember Sabbath is to remember creation, for the writer says, “Six days God created and rested on the seventh day.” Israel was called in that rhythm of worship and work: life and liturgy - to remember in ever reoccurring cycles that all of reality was a gift of God through the observance of Sabbath. Sabbath means rest, and that to which God called God’s people was to cease, to stop, to look, to listen. That to which God called God’s people was simply to let go, to take one’s hands off the controls. Simply to be. Now when I get home, I am glad that I will be surrounded by about fifty strong family, otherwise Nancy would take me aside and lecture me severely and say, “Preacher, heal yourself.” Being a Dutch Calvinist who grew up believing that © Grand Valley State University �The Word, a Means of Grace… Richard A. Rhem Page 5   salvation was through suffering and one’s labor, it is very hard for me to cease from my labor. Sabbath calls us to stop. There is that in us which struggles and strives and seeks to achieve. There is that indispensability complex that forgets that the world will get on jolly well with us or without us. There is that in us that gives ourselves far too much credit and too much responsibility for the ongoing movement of things. God said to Israel, “Stop. Look. Listen. And in your pause let me whisper to you that it is I that keeps the planets in orbit, and the fields green, and the rivers flowing, and the rain falling. It is I, in that greater grace of life that embraces you, that sustains you and keeps you in existence.” Sabbath. Stop. Look. Listen. Luxuriate - after the example of God. Why did God rest after the sixth day? Was God exhausted? I don’t really think so. Was God bored? Probably not. Did God need refueling in order to go back to work the next day? Hardly so. Why did God stop? Did not God stop simply to delight in that which God made? And is not to observe Sabbath an invitation to delight in the wonder of the world? To take a moment to revel in joy at birds and bees, and creepy crawly things, turtles and rosebuds, and starry nights and a fresh breeze that wafts across one on a summer’s eve. Sunrise and sunset, the succession of the seasons: Springtime and harvest, Summer and winter. Sun, moon and stars in their courses above. All of it if we just stop - and look - and listen. Inviting us to move beyond it all to the one who upholds it all by the word of power, whose grace embraces all, who calls us to delight. Matthew Fox, the Catholic theologian in trouble with the Vatican, suggests that the Church has been so hung up with original sin that it has forgotten original blessing. Before Genesis 3 is Genesis 2, the creation of a garden named Eden, which means delight. And the whole covenant of grace and the whole salvation thing is simply an emergency means to the restoration and realization of God’s grander scheme of the creation of the heavens and the earth. The breath that you breath, that pulsates within you, is the same life that is in the rose and its source is the same good and gracious God. Oh, I remember Sundays as a kid - they were to be endured. As someone has said, “Ugly Sundays.” Another part of my Dutch Reformed pietism, Sundays were marked by all the things I couldn’t do. That oppressive legalism has created a lot of dysfunction in our lives. It has taken me a long time to get over my rebellion against that suppression of delight to the point at which I realize that the invitation to observe Sabbath is an invitation of the good and gracious God who formed my well being and says “Delight. Just sit there and delight. Don’t do anything. Simply be and let grace wash over you.” The writer to the Hebrews says, “Today if you hear my voice, harden not your heart. Rhem Christ Community Church Spring Lake, Michigan March 5, 2000 Transcription of the spoken sermon In this interim between my return from vacation and the beginning of Lent, I have been mulling over with you the question of God, the question of God that will not go away, remarking about the fact that God is alive and well on planet Earth, and rather surprisingly so, because, as I have indicated a time or two, it would have seemed at mid-century that the obituary of God was in order and, indeed, there were those radical theologians who spoke of the death of God. And, in the dark horror of the Nazi prison camps, Dietrich Bonhoeffer had spoken of man come of age, about edging God out of the world, and Harvey Cox wrote his best-selling book, The Secular City, which celebrated secularity and life lived on a horizontal plane, and as a theologian, tried to find traces of God, footprints of God in the secular city. And now here, having entered into the 21st century, we find that there is indication everywhere that religion is strong and vital and the question of God simply will not go away. It is a surprise. Sigmund Freud, to whom I referred last week, who may be the epitome of modernity, modern scientific thinking, was convinced that science and religion were mortal enemies and that religion had to be cleared out in order for the human society to come into its maturity and live by its reason, by its intellect, putting away its wishful thinking and its superstitions, the superstitions that abound in all of the religions and that have been a big part of the origin of religion. But, Freud was wrong. Not that religion had not fought for 300 years a losing intellectual battle, but rather, that the human being can live out of his or her mind alone, that intellect is enough, that if we could only rid ourselves of our religion and our superstitious ways, we could live out of the intellect by reason, and thus come to maturity. That hasn't proven to be the case. The God question just simply doesn't go away because, contrary to what Freud expected, our problem is not knowledge, but it is something far deeper: the intuition of a deeper reality. We have knowledge. We are awash in knowledge, and the super-information highway runs right to our laptop and personal computers at our side. Rhem Page 2   the modern world, of the universe, of society, and of our own human being far surpassing the possibility of ever taking it in, and it's all right there at our fingertips. But, knowledge in itself is not the answer. Simply to describe what is doesn't deal with its meaning, its significance, those ultimate existential questions about whence have I come and whither am I going, and is this all there is, and what is the meaning of it all? Those are religious questions and they are of another sort than the knowledge that is the consequence of the use of the intellect, the rational processes of our mind. Someone just gave $350 million to MIT for the study of the brain. Wonderful! The brain is a great mystery and there's a tremendous amount of investigative focus on the brain. But, once we have come to be able to describe the brain fully, it's still not synonymous with understanding of that mental activity which is touched with Spirit which probes a deeper layer than that which is available to empirical investigation and research. We have knowledge aplenty. We can know the whole world, but the world is not enough, nor is the world that we can possess. Aren't you somewhat amazed at the wealth that is around today? The wealth that is everywhere, it seems, and even the least of us are among the wealthy of the world, and who of us has to deny ourselves very much in the way of creature comfort or pleasure or toys or globe-trotting to exotic places? We are bombarded, day by day, with the seduction of saying that one more trip or one more toy will make it all right. There was a study out last week that said 16 minutes and 43 seconds of every hour you watch television is given over to consumerism, making of us materialists, acquisitors. Robert Bellah, the American sociologist, wrote something that I jotted down the moment my eye fell on it, something to the effect that to secure happiness by material acquisition is denied by every religion and philosophy known to humankind, and yet it is preached on every American television set. Pleasure. Toys. Adventures. Wasn't that second chapter of Ecclesiastes taken as a script from our own contemporary life? The king who indulged himself without limits, denied himself nothing that his heart set itself upon, who ended up with his famous phrase, "Vanity, all is vanity," which has been translated also "Absurdity, all is absurdity," or emptiness, chasing the wind, because you can have it all and have nothing, because the world is not enough. The writer of the letter to Timothy says the same thing, warning those of us who are rich in this world not to be haughty or to set our hope on uncertain riches, but rather, on God. We find the same point being made in the Gospel lesson where one comes to Jesus to settle an inheritance dispute. Jesus declines and then tells a story about the farmer who prospered so greatly that he tore down his barns and built bigger ones, laying up enough store so he could relax and pursue his pleasure. © Grand Valley State University �The World Is Not Enough Richard A. Rhem Page 3   If Jesus had been in Naples this winter, he might have spoken not of barns, but of homes with a view. All along South Gulf Shore Blvd., houses are being torn down in order to build great, palatial residences. Obvious prosperity is everywhere, yet I get the impression we are more driven, more frenzied and under greater stress than ever. My Sony stock took a big hike this week. It's wonderful. I thought of how much more I could give to Christ Community. Twenty-three points, I think, and I wondered why until on the world news last night I noticed that Play Station Two is coming out. I didn't know there was Play Station One. I hadn't gotten beyond my grandchildren's Gameboys, but apparently there was Play Station One and now coming out in Japan is Play Station Two. Thousands of people sat up all night in the bone-chilling cold in Japan in order to be in line to get one of the two million Play Stations available on opening day. Stores had signs that they were sold out before they could open the doors. There was a frenzy of activity, and I watched as the people were playing these things. They were absolutely out of this world, playing with such intensity. This is not just a game. I don't understand it, but it apparently is like having in the palm of your hand a connection to everything you'd ever want to be connected to in the whole world. They interviewed one young lady who had a smile on her face and said, "Oh, I just love it. I couldn't live without it." And all the Play Stations in the world won't fill the hole in the soul or give one a peaceful heart. The question of God won't go away, and in our day we have such possibilities, endless learning, limitless pleasure, toys galore, the whole world to travel, but the scriptures which are ancient sound like they were written yesterday when they remind us that a life not built on God is a life that will ultimately unravel and come apart. It used to be easier to preach about this kind of stuff. I don't do this very much. Probably because it's more difficult now because God isn't some super-human person just above the sky. God isn't some King Almighty who is turning the gears of the universe and pulling the strings of people. God is not that external deity that runs things and rules things. When God was that for me, I knew how to tell you how to please and appease that God. And, with a sermon like this, particularly if you just bought a new lot with a view and planned to tear down the house on it and build a new one, you'd go out of here with guilt so heavy it would probably take you another seven days to recover. The pulpit traditionally in the church has been wonderfully eloquent in the imposition of guilt, crabby about people who have done well, who are successful, who are having a good time in life. That's not the point. I don't quite know how to do it with a conception of God so radically altered, as it is for me, and I think for many of you. It's not to please or appease some external ruler who holds us accountable and is ready to call in our guilt, but, how do we live with a God that is not outside, but inside? Rhem Page 4   inexhaustible ground and source of all being, that creative Spirit within the process, this process, this cosmic process of 15 billion years that has been unfolding and developing and emerging, of which we are a part, out of which we have emerged, we who are the outposts of Spirit, as it were, we who have come to consciousness and awareness, who are the containers of Spirit, who allow Spirit voice, who are able to be conscious of the wonder of it all, the amazement of this whole fantastic drama, and we are a part of it? How do we live with a Godconsciousness of the God who is not threatening just beyond the blue, but who is part and parcel of the process itself within us, the Spirit that would come to expression through us? Isn't it a matter of becoming comfortable in our own skin? Isn't it a matter of being at home in the world? Isn't it to find delight in being a part of the whole, wonderful process? Knowledge isn't the problem; it's just not the answer. And wealth isn't the problem, except if we've set our heart on it. But, all things are ours to enjoy if we come to the consciousness of God who is, once again, the inexhaustible ground of all being, that present Spirit that energizes all and enlivens all, that God who calls us to know ourselves, and I wonder, finally, if I would come to know myself, would that be to know God? And I don't know how to tell you to do it; some of you would do it, perhaps, with me, in a class where we'd go at it in an intellectual fever. Some of you could better walk the Labyrinth with Toni. All of us need to pause now and again and hear the questions of our existence which are the questions that are the voice of God, to be still and know that God is God, and if God is God and I live in that awareness, then all will be well. Rhem Christ Community Church Spring Lake, Michigan June 19, 1988 Transcription of the spoken sermon But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, until I went into the sanctuary of God; there I saw clearly... Psalm 73:16-17 We all love a good fairy tale, children and adults, as well. Perhaps that is because fairy tales are true. The story comes out right: the good prosper, the wicked are wasted. Maybe something in the depths of our being responds to that because something in us knows that is the way it ought to be, should be - will be. But, the fairy tale is true only if one takes the long-range view; only if God is God, Sovereign, working God's eternal purposes out, purposes of love and grace and salvation, bringing about finally a Kingdom in which dwells righteousness and peace - Shalom. In the short range, the fairy tale is just that - a fairy tale, meaning a fantasy world quite out of sync with the real world. In the short range, things do not work out right – everyone does not live happily ever after. In the short range, one cannot find the working out of justice, fairness and equity. And if one’s peace of mind and happiness and wellbeing are dependent upon life being fair and all things working out in an equitable fashion, one will have slight chance of arriving at inward peace and joy and rest of soul. Life is not fair. There is no justice within the span of a person's existence. No amount of research on actual, concrete, human stories will demonstrate that things work out right according to our human standards of what is fair and just. And that is a cause of much human suffering and anguish. It leads to one of the most serious and debilitating diseases of the human spirit - cynicism, bitterness, caused by envy and self-pity. A cynical and bitter spirit smoldering with jealousy and self-pity has a corrosive effect on the human spirit; it is to have an acid eating away at one's soul; it is a © Grand Valley State University   �The Worship of God: The Healing of Persons Richard A. Rhem Page 2   source of constant inward pain which is often assuaged by growing callouses on the soul, hardening oneself against feelings -feelings of joy and sorrow, of depression and exaltation. Cynicism is the sneering attitude that denies the sincerity or goodness of human motives. It is the tendency to criticize and find fault. It flows from one generally embittered with life, disillusioned with the way things have turned out. Unless it is checked, such bitterness will become a permanent hardness of heart resistant to trust, to joy, to spontaneity in any form. It is a kind of spiritual deadness. There is perhaps no more vivid portrayal of human experience struggling with cynical loss of faith and embitterment of spirit than Psalm 73. The Psalmist sets the record straight at the beginning. Truly God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. That is both his conclusion and his premise. He can begin that way because he has passed through the fires of doubt and struggle and has come to affirm his trust in God, renewed only after great and painful wrestling with life experience. Brueggemann comments: Verse 1 sets the premise for the Psalm, which is also its conclusion. But it is a different statement when it is conclusion than when it is premise. When it is premise, it may be taken as pre-hurt, pre-doubt, pre-anguish. It is then a buoyant statement of naiveté. But as a conclusion, the affirmation is on the other side of hurt, doubt and anguish. While the words may be the same, they now bear different freight. Now the unuttered words of resentment have been uttered. Now the unthinkable thoughts of hostility have been thought. ... Psalm 73 is an assault on any naive faith. It arrives tortuously at a second, knowing naiveté. (The Message of the Psalms, p. 116) Having stated his premise, which is also his conclusion, the Psalmist goes on candidly to confess that he almost went over the brink, losing his grip on this fundamental conviction of faith. He writes: My feet had almost slipped, my foothold had all but given way. He then goes on to detail his bitter experience of doubt, his dark night of the soul as he questioned the moral structure of life and the knowledge and care of God. He speaks vividly, in graphic terms of how everything appeared to him during his time of intense struggle. We must recognize immediately that in the midst of his personal torment his vision is blurred and his judgment warped. He gives us a very distorted view of things. According to him, the careless, the godless prosper, experience no pain, © Grand Valley State University �The Worship of God: The Healing of Persons Richard A. Rhem Page 3   no suffering, are strangers to trouble and trial. They grow wealthy, enjoy good health. They are proud, violent and full of scorn. Is the picture overdrawn? Probably. The world is not really divided into two camps, one a camp of white hats, the other a camp of black hats. To divide the world into the righteous and the wicked is a bit too simple, too neat. Certainly it is too simplistic for a congregation that prints on its bulletin week after week the statement of Hans Küng: The front between the world and God's rule, between good and evil, runs right through the church, right through the heart of the individual. Evil is much more subtle and entwines itself in the lives of us all. This is not to say that there is no difference in people. Certainly there are those whose lives reflect a commitment to truth, righteousness, justice. There are those, as well, who seek their own advantage at whatever human cost to another and with total disregard for what is right and true. Nonetheless, especially in the Church we need to resist the too simple division of persons into categories of righteous and wicked. But for the purpose of the Psalmist's story, it is not so important whether reality reflected what he perceived or not. The fact is this is the way he felt. This is how it looked to him. We are indebted to this singer of Israel for revealing his soul to us. He was deeply hurting. He was angry at the world. He was angry at God. We have been there, too. And it is helpful to know that this kind of experience is not foreign to God's people. The Old Testament is especially healthy in this regard. They stormed heaven with their wounded spirits and called the Almighty to account. There was no pious masking of their true feelings. The Psalmist is not the only Old Testament figure that stormed the citadel of Heaven crying out to God, “How come?” I wonder what it was that was really rankling the Psalmist. Had he worked hard, done his best, dealt honestly and lived with integrity, only to have the bottom fall out of the economy and watch his life's work dribble away? Or had he risked everything to help a friend, only to have the friend turn on him? Was he disappointed in love? Did his children prove ungrateful? Had he just learned of a terminal disease which would soon cut him off? The particulars are unimportant. Life has more than enough trouble and heartache to go around and the stuff of which the Psalmist's pain was made is almost without limit because we can set it down as a fundamental truth of human experience – Life is not fair. © Grand Valley State University �The Worship of God: The Healing of Persons Richard A. Rhem Page 4   Having admitted that, I want to make a point of application right here; granted, life is not fair, but Pain perverts perspective. If we could learn that well, it would save us much angry bitterness. As we said above, the Psalmist's view of things was warped, distorted, but this is what he was feeling. Happy the person who before the crisis promises himself he will make no world-encompassing generalizations in the midst of his anguish, because, again, Pain perverts perspective. Can we understand? Certainly. Have we been there? Most of us, at some time. But, it can be helpful to recognize ahead of time that how we feel and how things appear when we are hurting is not a true reflection of reality. Pain perverts perspective. When people are in crisis it does not help to try to correct their vision. It does little good to assure them that “This, too, will pass.” When someone is pouring out their grief and anguish, just let it come; absorb it; feel it with them. That is not the time for a brilliant discourse or “a true perspective on Reality.” However, we can help ourselves be prepared for crisis times if we come to realize that Pain perverts perspective. The Psalmist has already given us his strong affirmation of faith and so obviously something happened to turn him around. He tells us in verse 16. He had been quite overcome with his completely negative perception of life. He says, I set myself to think this out but found it too hard for me, until I went into God's sacred courts; there I saw clearly what their end would be. The Psalmist learned the secret of the sanctuary. There, in the presence of God, in the posture of worship, he gained a new perspective. He found that Worship is healing. To make that statement calls for immediate clarification. I am not suggesting that the primary purpose or focus of our worship is our personal healing. We worship God. We celebrate the grace of God in response to God's revealing of an eternal saving purpose, a plan for the establishing of a Kingdom in which dwells righteousness and justice and peace. © Grand Valley State University �The Worship of God: The Healing of Persons Richard A. Rhem Page 5   But with that being granted, it is also important to understand the reflexive effect of our worship - to see how the action of worship has a healing effect on the one who worships. The Psalmist says, “ Life was too painful for me; I tried to think it through and I could not. Then I went into the sanctuary -then I understood.” In fairness to the text, I should let the whole statement be heard: ... Then I saw clearly what their end would be. One could hear this as a rather mean satisfaction that “the wicked” will get theirs and maybe there is some of that operating here. It is a rare person that takes no satisfaction in the fall of another, particularly if one has been infected with the disease of bitterness and has wallowed in self-pity. But even if that is true, there is the discovery here of a fundamental truth about God and human destiny which is the bedrock of biblical faith. The perspective of the sanctuary enabled the Psalmist to take the long view and to see that, although there is no justice in the short run, there is certainly a coming round of all things in the long run. Within the stream of history there is no possibility of seeing things whole. It is only in the posture of worship, in the presence of God that one is able to trust the process, trust the good and gracious and sovereign Lord of History to effect the promised Kingdom and bring Shalom. But, beyond the new insight, beyond a renewed vision of God's eternal purpose, the Psalmist found a Presence. The Presence of God, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of Moses and the Exodus, the God of Covenant, the God of grace and steadfast love, the faithful God. In the sanctuary, in worship, the Psalmist experienced communion with God. It is in the gaining of new insight and the experience of communion with God that healing happens! Look at the Psalmist's expression of where he was before he worshipped: My heart was embittered. I felt pangs of envy, I would not understand, so brutish was I. I was a mere beast in thy sight, O God. Now there was insight - not only on human experience in time and space, but also self-awareness, self-knowledge, understanding of the paralysis of spirit caused by his envy, cynicism and bitterness. Rhem Page 6   I went into the sanctuary, there I saw clearly. Thus we have a vivid statement of intense spiritual anguish and suffering and its cure – going to church! Perhaps that sounds naive. But it is, of course, more than going to church. It is the experience of worship. The effect of worship on the worshipper is the healing of the person. Do we approach the worship of God with such high expectation? Do we recognize how crucial is the worship of God for the health of our being? What a strange situation is Sunday morning! Karl Barth describes it vividly in one of his early essays - the building, the appointments, the songs, the prayers, the preaching - all of them “saying” more than they say; all of them pointing beyond themselves to another; all of them crying out, “God is here!” And we come, Barth says, only half conscious of why - some out of habit, some out of need or hope - some believing, some not - some open and sensitive, some hardened by much hard experience. But, we come. And consciously or unconsciously we come with the burning question, “Is it true?” “Is God God?” “Is it true?” Is there reason to hope? Is there life in the end? Will grace and truth triumph? Will there break a dawn which shall know no setting sun? That's why we come. And all we do here is in order to lift our lives into the presence of the One Whose grace will touch us and Whose light will give us light and hope and heal us. Come, then. Come prayerfully. Rhem Page 7   The Psalmist learned to trust when faith came hard. He worshiped and worship puts us in touch with God. In touch with God. As prayers are offered, hymns are sung, the Word is proclaimed, trust replaces agonizing doubt, peace mantles my heart, peace that passes understanding. That is, peace I cannot rationally explain, but peace I experience. In the sanctuary, in the posture of worship, the picture clarifies, my perverted perspective gives way to new perspective; as I worship, I get in touch with God Who has come close to us in the flesh of Jesus. Reality and truth break in on me. I see beyond the chaos a larger screen, a heart and purpose of love, a thread of meaning. Surely in the awful tragedy and intense suffering that is the daily lot of so many it must seem that God is dead or worse still, that He doesn't know; that He doesn't care. But in His Presence, I know He knows, I know He cares. Here I hear the story again of His own deep plunge into the depths of our suffering, His own embracing of the worst of our darkness in Jesus, His Son. In the sanctuary I see the cross and I am reminded that God suffers, too; that God was crucified with Jesus on the cross; that the heart of the Eternal breaks with the weight of human sin, rebellion and violence. In touch with God, I sense that history with its terrible woes and awful suffering is not all there is; that death and defeat will not have the final say; that the God Who has joined us in our darkness will finally make some sense out of this senseless suffering; will yet effect His purposes and cause love to prevail and peace to be the final word. In worship, in communing with God, I am healed. I see clearly. I trust. I rest in the abyss of God's love. Now I can go on.
