Community service • Dedication to impacting the lives of women and girls • A strong commitment to feminist interests and scholarship �De'Nisha Beasley Samantha J. Schenk 2006-2007 2007-2008 I'm currently a Residence Director at DePaul University, working with students who live on campus. I oversee educational programming for the halls and supervise nine RAs. In addition to my primary role at DePaul, I am a part of the DePaul Women's Network. DWN connects women staff and faculty across the university on professional development and social events that matter to women working at the University. De'Nisha Beasley, the first recipient of the Jean Enright Scholarship was a WGS minor. She earned her MSW at the University of Michigan and worked as a clinical social working and rehabilitation specialist. She is in the graduate program in University's Theological Studies at Liberty University. She has created a mentoring program that empowers teenage girls, hosts a radio show, and writes a blog. The Jean Enright Scholarship has been of great significance for me. In addition to the financial support, the scholarship affirmed my participation and contributions to the WGS program and GVSU community. To me, the Jean Enright Scholarship meant I was a scholar in the field of WGS. �Anne Marie Carson Margaret Danenberg Retsema 2008-2009 2009-2010 I am currently working as an attorney at an international law firm in Washington, D.C. My practice focuses on international development and infrastructure transactions. Since starting in September of 2014, I have had the opportunity to impact women through work on an investment providing microfinance opportunities to women entrepreneurs in Tajikistan and a pro bono project on human trafficking and prosecution across the United States. I am involved with our law firm's Women Attorneys and LGBTA groups and am committed to building professional and personal connections that empower all perspectives. The Enright Scholarship provided a source of support during my undergraduate experience. Beyond the alleviation of some of the financial pressures of a college education, this scholarship provided me with a network and community of individuals working toward similar goals. I think one of the greatest challenges facing women with "gumption" can be a feeling of isolation. Receiving this scholarship provided an acknowledgement that I am capable of great things and that there are amazing women willing to support me when I need it most. I'm currently in my 9th year working for the YMCA in the Corporate Business Service Center as a processor (glorious, I know). I manage billing, changes, and program help for several locations in the YMCA association. I have a husband, Matt, and two daughters, Cora (3) and Elsa (1). They are awesome. I look forward to the day my feminist avengers hit the playground. I'm very grateful for receiving the Enright scholarship because it helped fund my study abroad to Egypt. Without the experience of studying abroad, I would never have been able to travel with such a wide range of opportunity and support. With that trip, I was able to grow as a person, adjust to my recent adult independence, and discover a passion for the world outside of my own country. My views of the oppression of Middle Eastern women became more nuanced as I was able to see a much clearer picture of what issues need attention. �Samantha Schenck Jessica Krebs 2009-2010 2011-2012 Nicole Hollebrands Jepkoech J. Krebs 2010-2011 2011-2012 I am a month and a half away from gradu- ~~~, ating with my MSW degree from Western Michigan University (June 26 cannot arrive quickly enough!!). I completed my second MSW internship as a therapist providing treatment to children that have been sexually abuse at the Children's Advocacy Center of Ottawa County. After I graduate, I hope to get a position that involves doing therapy with child and adult victims and survivors of abuse. I am also the Director of Programming at the LGBT Network of West Michigan, and am assisting them with a major agency restructure. Being awarded the Jean Enright Scholarship is something that I am proud of . I feel so honored to have been selected for an award dedicated the impact Ms. Enright has made, and continues to make, on the lives of those in our community. Seeing my name alongside other students who are doing amazing things for the world, is remarkable. Whenever I think back on the scholarship, it serves as a reminder of the invaluable impact the WGS Department had on my life, and how it shaped me into being the person and professional I am today. ., ;) ) J I am currently a Planned Parenthood volunteer, and also serve as the Writing Coordinator for the Grand Rapids Chapter of the National Organization for Women. I just learned that I have been accepted into WMU's Masters of Social Work Program! I am excited for the journey that lies ahead. This past Fall, I was also privileged to have the experience of a lifetime: I attended the National Women's Studies Conference in Puerto Rico, where I heard feminists bell hooks, Angela Davis, and Chandra Mohanty speak. I even met Angela Davis! It was unforgettable. The Jean Enright Scholarship helped support my study abroad trip to South Africa during my senior year. While there, I applied what I learned in the classroom at Grand Valley to the volunteer work in Cape Town. I met amazing people, learned a great deal about the similarities and differences in the culture and history between the U.S. and South Africa, and gained life experiences I will never forget. Much like this scholarship represents- community service, dedication to impacting the lives of women and girls, and a strong commitment to feminist interests and scholarship- I strive each and every day to uphold those same ideals in my personal and activist life. In this way, the Jean Enright scholarship has impacted my life significantly. �Monique A. Tumbleson Danielle Meirow 2012-2013 2013-2014 I am now a St. Louis transplant by way of Grand Rapids, Michigan. After graduating from GVSU and moving out of state I started my non-profit career at Covenant House Missouri. At one of the nation's oldest child welfare agencies, as the Operations Assistant, I empower homeless, runaway, and at-risk youth ages 16-21 years old to make a difference in their lives and become contributing members of society. As someone who was homeless myself as a high school student, I am eternally grateful to have been given the op- · portunity to positively impact others' lives through my career. The Jean Enright Scholarship allowed me to graduate from college and pursue a career of empowering youth who are in the most dire need of mentors and advocates in their lives. I am currently working as a warehouse associate at the Michigan based outdoor retailer, Moosejaw, in order to spend time with my family and save money before graduate school. I plan to start a graduate program in Fall of 2016 to pursue a degree in Higher Education. The financial support of the Enright scholarship allowed me greater freedom to pursue campus involvements and unpaid internships during my senior year. More significantly, it serves as a constant reminder of the great feminist community at Grand Valley that helped me develop into a strong leader and a proud activist. Their recognition and encouragement inspires me to continue to make meaningful change in my community. �Jepkoech J. Kottutt Alexandra Mitchell 2014-15 2015-16 I just graduated with a major in Biomedical Science and a minor in Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies. I will be pursuing a master's in Public Health with an emphasis in Epidemiology in the Fall of 2015. My dream is to become a gynecologist and work with underserved women in Kenya and Africa at large. The scholarship has enabled me to accomplish my goal of obtaining a degree and I believe that having a minor in Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies is essential to my career pursuits because it will equip me with the socioeconomic background that surrounds Women's health, thereby putting me in a better place to offer medical services to them. In winter 2016, I will study abroad at the Hellenic International Studies of the Arts in Paros, Greece. As a junior, I still have a year and a half left of my undergraduate educational career . Next year I plan to apply for a Fulbright scholarship work in Ghana with a theatre program associated with a rehabilitation program for children affected by child trafficking.
