A recent $150,000 grant awarded to the center through the Arcu Foundation of Kalamazoo is a te, tam nt to the importan of th c nt r as an du ·ational and so ial r sour· for th local ·ommunity. With issues such as immi ,ration and t ·rrorism saturating th n ws, th term ""diversity,, i , adopting an ever more negative connotation. Linking diversity to difference and difference to danger has been a historical mistak for th U.S. and many nations throughout the world. Organizations and offic s such as th LGB'I R sour· Center ar vital to ·ombaling this domino '.'ff ·t. By e.mphasizing the progr ·' and advantag mad pos ·ibl through an understanding and appreciation of div r ity, such organizations keep society moving forward. The LGBT Resource Center has hosted dozens of programs to educate the campus community on various issues affecting the LGBT community and served as the support system for an untold number struggling to find and accept their identity. Such an offi is a vital n:,sour 'l for many who find them elves social pariahs in an area that prid · it ·elf on its "conse_rvative" nature. To make any impact, however small, in a community with fervent religious, political and social barriers to that issue is a feat that must be recognized. Though only a few years old, the LGBT Resource Center has had much success in the GVSU community and with the assistance of the grant, will be able to continue its efforts to educate and unite people, but on a larger scale. The $150,000 grant will allow the ~enter to enhance its social justice training efforts, build statewide · resources and increase community collaborations and partnerships. Avery GVl Col, nm,sl .. ' .~~ ;; i" . • Remember the cliques and stereotypes we were all so desperately ready to escape when we went to college - jocks, Barbies, geeks, weirdos and inbetweeners? They are the same cliques our parents faced and the same cliques our own children must tackle. What I don't remember in high school was the administration fearing the manifestation of cliques into intimidating masses and then tackling that problem by not allowing anyone to socialize. Cliques are exactly the reason why the LGBT Resource Center is no longer allowing students to "meet-up and socialize" in its lounge area. The article in the Grand Valley Lanthom said the LGBT staff has made every effort to comfort students and support them in understanding the changes made to the LGBT Center policies - what? Typically, you support someone in a choice they have made, not a choice you force them to make. What exactly was going on in the LGBT Center that would warrant such a drastic change? Were people actually comfortable socializing in there, enjoying each others' company? Were they freely and openly discussing important issues that would generally be deemed taboo? I'm describing what should be the function of the LGBT Center. Its whole purpose is to provide resources, space and a safe haven to the LGBT community, and now the groups of people for whom it was meant to be a support system can't even go in there unless they have "official business." The assistant director of the Grand Valley State University LGBT Resource Center claimed the LGBT Center is still "completely committed to having any conversation that is needed with our students." Something that was once extremely personal has become as phony and meaningless. I'm really interested in seeing how this policy is going to really play out. Is the LGBT Center going to give a time limit as to how long it's willing to •have "conversations" with students and then give them a pamphlet and send them on their way? What I likt,about centers such as the LGBT Resource Center and the Woman's Center is their open-door policy, their attentiveness, the accepting, comfortable and safe atmosphere and their willingness to help in any way they can. What's wrong with having a group of regulars that comes in every Monday to sit down and chat it up, and why woulq those groups then be deemed intimidating or disruptive? There's nothing wrong with it. In my mind a newcomer would feel more put off if they see an empty center with tumble weeds blowing by than if they saw a group of cheerful students comfortably conversing with one another. Perhaps the problem is the center needs to expand and have two separate areas: one strictly for "business" and the other for all of us socialites who just can't help but be friendly. The change limited the center's functions to meetings with staff, receiving resources, participating in programming and using the libraries. Students will no longer be allowed to meet up and socialize inside the center. The change, which took effect on March 15, was made after some students expressed concerns about a "clique"like environment, said Colette Seguin Beighley, assistant director of Grand Valley State University's LGBT Resource Center. The center took several steps to gauge student opinions, holding · focus groups and surveying both students who regularly used the Resource Center and students who did not. Beighley said she and others at the center were aware of the strong student reaction to the change and were working with students to ease their adjustment. "I believe that at first many of the students who hung out in the center daily were confused, hurt and angry," she said. ''That was very painful to see. The center staff made every effort .to be available to have conversations with students in order to support them through this change. Our goal was to help students develop a new way to engage in the mission and vision of the center. We were very committed to maintaining every relationship with the students we serve." It was held at the LGBT center. By Samantha Butcher GVL Senior Reporter The LGBT Resource Center on Grand Valley State University's Allendale Campus is extending its programming this academic year. In addition to its ongoing LGBT conferences, support groups and student organizations, the center is introducing the following three new programs: the Freshman Queer Alliance, a support group for first year students, Pipeline, an LGBTA .leadership program, and Change U, a social justice training series. Colette Seguin Beighley, the center's assistant director, said the programs were created based on student demand. "Freshman Queer Alliance and Pipeline were developed directly from our focus groups and online surveys we did last year," she said. "Our ongoing conferences were based off of students' interests as well." Freshman Queer Alliance will meet weekly throughout the fall semester on Wednesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m and begins on Sept. 22. The registration deadline for the program is Sept. 20. "It's really sort of a safety net, welcoming program for freshmen on campus," Seguin See LGBT, A2 �T continued from page A 1 Beighley said. In an effort to change that dynamic, members and staff of Grand Valley State University's LGBT Resource Center have made it their mission to ensure members will always have a place where they can feel a sense of belonging. Such a milestone as a newly-established alumni chapter makes this more than possible. Just weeks ago, the Alumni Association Board approved the LGBT's application to create an official alumni chapter in hopes of ensuring that even after graduation, students will have a support network to rely on. "For me personally, it is the desire to connect other Lakers in helping support the LGBT Resource Center to create literal and figurative space on campus and in the community for people to live authentic lives:• said LGBT Resource Center Secretary and Treasurer, Tony Josephson. To attract and increase chapter participation, social events and networking opportunities will make an appearance between the months of October and December to help raise awareness among current and future alumni within the LGBT community. In 2015, the center will sponsor and host guest speakers from local businesses and non-profit organizations to speak and meet with students. For Colette Seguin Beighley, director of the LGBT Resource Center, the addition of an alumni chapter will help secure and maintain connections for LGBT members. "We are so thrilled to be a part of the development of a new LGBT alumni chapter:• Seguin Beighley said. The biggest misconception that surfaced linked HIV closely with the LGBT community and it has remained there for some time. Medical industries have proved that the disease is treatable, preventable and doesn't discriminate ba ed n sexual orientation. Although, it does tend to effect a y unger demographic. "I think this is an important conversation t have because younger people are one of the only populations in the last 10 years in which number of incidents of HIV have continued to stay the same or increase:' Hsu-Bishop said. Because of this frightening trend, Watt, along with the departments that make up GVSU Intersections have long been working to not only combat stigma, but misinformation as well. The two usually come together, though on GVSU's campus, students have taken a broader approach to HIV and AIDS. Watt takes the additional role of reducing stigma around the disease, working closely with educational organizations to make that goal a reality. "So we wanted to bring Dave Watt in to provide education on what we do know about HIV today, what the medical treatment is for HIY, as well as how we can fight stigma:' Though medical truths about HIV and AIDS have ominous disease. Many have exhibited a general approach: to stay healthy and protect partners without embarrassment. HIV and STis in general are realities that everyone and anyone could face. "Our role is to educate people on campus about things they just don't know about or things that they've been taught as fact:' aid Kristie Scanlon, assistant director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs. "We just want to broaden a knowledge ba e without saying 'this is what you should believe~' Because students have been educated about HIV and AID differently, there's no universal approach to further educating them now. Scanlon hopes that through hearing Watt speak about his experiences working with those affected by AIDS and through social media awareness, efforts to end the stigma and successfully fight the epidemic can be more successful. "Unfortunately, it sometimes happens that people don't talk about it unless it's personally impacting them:' she said. "It would be great if we didn't have to do this work anymore. She said the quilt was made by hand by many allies. The project was inspired by Ford's "dance floor model" of the intersectionality of the LGBT community. "Milt had a vision for helping people understand complexity without being afraid of it," Johnstone said. " His model was wiggly and hand-drawn with colored pencils, and it frustrated him that it was only two-dimensional. Ford LGBT Resource Center hosted "Queer the Air" Monday, Oct. 10 as students shared experiences of personal identity and embraced the arts. Held once a semester in the LGBT Resource Center, students are invited to read poetry and other spoken performance pieces. This year, "Queer the Air" was held in honor of National Coming Out Day, which celebrates the coming out process for LGBT people. �“National Coming Out Day is a recognition and celebration of LGBT identities and visibility," said Marla Wick, assistant director of the center. "The idea of coming out, and of there being a closet that one needs to 'come out' of, only makes sense because we are all otherwise presumed to be straight and cisgender. LGBT people are in all of our communities, and this day celebrates their presence and importance in everyone's lives. "(Queer the Air) gives students a platform to express themselves creatively and authentically in a vibrant and supportive environment.” This event, along with other organizations in relation to the LGBT Resource Center, creates a strong sense of community between the performers and observers. Wick said marginalized voices are allowed to be heard in a safe space. “This event definitely provides a form of community for LGBT students,” Wick said. “Students who perform or participate in this event as audience members get to appreciate not only the amazing amount of talent and creativity in their community, but also the wonderfully tangible way these students support each other. "We get some food and really encourage a creative and warm community environment focused on self-expression and validation.” Ezra Smith, student worker in the LGBT Resource Center, said public events like "Queer the Air" allow for a broader audience other than only students who frequent the center. “It definitely brings out a lot of people we don’t see on a daily basis, especially with us being queer, our community can be very small because not many folks are out,” Smith said. “It’s not just the open mic aspect of it, but even when we’re all just sitting down and listening, we’re reacting, watching other people react and bonding over those moments.” �Alongside events like "Queer the Air," the LGBT Resource Center offers a myriad of services to the community, as well as those who are not affiliated with GVSU but are interested in the materials the center provides. “We provide support to students, faculty and staff on campus as well as community members who contact us for resources, education or referrals. We offer a safer space on campus for students to gather and be in community with one another, and support a number of student groups,” Wick said. GVL I SARA CARTE In an effort to affirm the varying gender identities of students, the Grand Valley State University Milton E. Ford LGBT Resource Center held its annual event 'Wear the Rainbow: a Trans and Genderqueer Clothing Swap: The yearly clothing swap, held in Loosemore Auditorium on the Pew campus, was held Monday, Nov. 7 and allotted students access to free apparel for any gender identity. The event offered dressing rooms for people to try on looks and maintain privacy. This year, the center worked in partnership with the GVSU LGBT Alumni Chapter to put on the event. Officials in the center said the event is important for students who want to explore and express their gender identity, but may not be able to purchase clothing based on varying reasons. "This clothing swap provides an affirmative space for people to explore different expressions of gender presentation and to play with various looks;' said Marla Wick, assistant director of the center. "This provides needed access to items that may otherwise be unavailable to people due to financial burdens, personal safety concerns and other barriers:' "Clothing swaps like this are important because it allows trans people to get clothes that make them feel more comfortable within their bodies:' said Ezra Smith, student worker in the center. ''Also, since many of us are young and broke, we don't have to worry about affording the clothes:' Moreover, Smith said community events like the clothing swap can be a source of affirmation to transgender and gender non-conforming students. "These events are validating because there's other people in this space like you, which on its own is validating;' he said. ''And there are also often people there to validate us and help us find ourselves through clothes:' "Wear the Rainbow" also serves as a means of celebrating the history of the LGBT community and offering new ways for people in the community to help one another. The event has been a tradition for a least three years. On Thursday, Nov. 30, student senate discussed food insecurity for students on campus as well as visibility for LGBT community members. GVL I MATT READ As part of the Grand Valley State - University student senate's general assembly on Thursday, Nov. 30, the senators provided minutes from a conference some of them had attended and welcomed two guest speakers who discussed student hunger on campus and LGBTQIA+ visibility. Sharalle Arnold, the associate director of the Gayle R. Davis Center for Women and Gender Equity (CWGE), shared a report from the· College and University Food Bank Alliance, which found that one in three students on college campuses are hungry, compared to one in seven people in the U.S. as a whole. The number of students who have visited Replenish, the food pantry at GVSU, has risen over the last couple of years, Arnold said, necessitating a larger space for the food bank. The last academic year alone totaled more than 900 visits. Access to affordable, healthy food is crucial for student success at GVSU, Arnold said. "I really think it's important to urge you all to consider the connection between academic achievement and adequate nutrition;' she said. "When you're hungry, it's going to impede your ability to engage in your education. The very fact that food is inaccessible to a large number of our students undermines the very notion of why we are here gathered in the academy, which is to pursue an education:' Arnold pointed out that manyfirstgeneration students, low-income students and students of color are not getting the nutrition they need. She asked the senate to help Replenish expand its food bank into a larger space. Its current location, Kirkhof 0074, is not large enough for the food and services they would like to provide. "I would ask you to consider the disproportionate number of first-generation students, low-income students and students of color that experience hunger on this campus;' she said. "I would ask you to help me as I am trying to fan the flames around conversations regarding low- or no-cost meal plans for our self-eligible students:' she said. "I would ask you to consider the high cost of food on campus. Food is a basic right. It should not be that some families are prioritized and some families have easier access than others. 'J\ll of our students need to eat; all of our students need access to healthy food:' From there, Jen Hsu-Bishop, director of the Milton E. Ford LGBT Resource Center, shared the center's efforts to make GVSU a welcoming place for LGBTQIA+ students, especially in light of the violence and hostility that some of these students experience on campuses across the country. Over the last l0years, GVSU has grown in LGBTQIA+ visibility on campus by offering scholarships to those engaged in the LGBTQIA+ community, facilitating programs and providing education, which in turn make people in the community feel they belong at GVSU. "If you feel like you belong here, if people want you to be here and you can be your full self, it makes it a lot easier to be in the classroom and ask a question about the math problem:' Hsu-Bishop said. Hsu-Bishop said everyone at GVSU plays a role in keeping the campus a welcoming and safe environment for all students, regardless of their sexual or gender identity. "We all have a role to play;' she said. "Whether you identify as straight or transgender or LGBTQIA+, we all have an opportunity to say, 'Yeah, I'm a part of whether this campus is welcoming, affirming and inclusive to the folks around me, people I care about, as well as myself." Also at the general assembly, student senators who attended a conference at Oakland University in mid-November shared their notes from the day. The conference was a gathering of student senators from various universities to present on their current projects. One of the first points that senator Rachel Jenkin shared was that the conference made her realize that GVSU's student senate is ahead of the pack. "My take-home point from the day was that I'm incredibly proud of our body and everything that we're doing:• Jenkin said. "In comparison to other universities, we're just ahead of the game, and we're happy to see that:' With that said, Jenkin mentioned that some universities have sexual-assault services in place that she would like to see replicated at GVSU. "There are a couple of universities that have 24-hour service for victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, things like that, that they can ca11:• she aid "They give them information about programs, ... things of that nature, so that's what I'm going to be working towards:' Senators Julian VanDaele and Cameron Jones discussed the state funding that GVSU receives in comparison toother universities. Senator Carly Aller then brought up that GVSU is better off than others schools in some ways. For example, GVSU has a much higher budget for student organizations than some other universities have. Oakland University has a $200,000 budget, for example, while GVSU has a budget of more than $2 million, she said. There will be no fee to enter the festival Saturday, June 17, in downtown Grand Rapids. The event, which will go from noon to midnight, will feature a selection of vendors and booths, as well as music and live drag performances. The festival means different things to different people who attend, although the event serves the main pur- r pose of allowing the LGBTQ community to express itself surrounded by people who appreciate that expression. "Pride is fundamentally about honoring and celebrat,ing LGBTQIA+ history while calling attention to the ongoing and changing needs of queer and trans people;' said Marla Wick, assistant director of the Grand Valley State University Milton E. Ford LGBT Resource Center. Wick said pride events are a place to put explicit attention on the LGBT community and the issues its members face. LGBT Resource Center to celebrate anniversary The 2017-2018 academic year marks the 10-year anniversary of the creation of Grand Valley's Milton E. Ford LGBT Resource Center. Celebratory events are planned in October for the center, which opened in 2007. It was named posthumously for its founding director and professor ofliberal studies, Milt Ford, who worked at Grand Valley for more than 40 years. Ford died in 2014. Two events are planned and both are free and open to the campus community and public. An event on October 17 will run from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Eberhard Center. Remarks will be made by current students, alumni and Gary Van Harn, budget manager and assistant for the Padnos International Center, who was Ford's partner. He has led the Allies & Advocates program and is the founder of the GVSU Faculty-StaffLGBT Scholarship. The second event will include community members and is set for October 18 from 6-9 p.m. at Creston Brewery in Grand Rapids. The brewery will donate proceeds made that day to the center's action fund. Jen Hsu-Bishop, director of the LGBT Center, said the center has grown t.remendo_usly through the years. The growth includes three endowed scholarships, an annual event that features a nationally renowned speaker, ar1d student engagement and support programs that reach hundreds of students every year. "Ten years ago, there was a real need for a center to support students in the LGBT community," Hsu-Bishop said. "Since then, we've positioned ourselves to be leaders, and have established valuable relationships with people on campus and in the West Michigan community." Since the popularization of the television show "RuPaul's Drag Race:' the culture surrounding drag queens and drag kings has come into mainstream light. From its beginnings as an LGBTQ subcultural community hidden from the eyes of society, drag has come a long :way. For Grand Valley State University students Rachel Britton and Kaylee Britton, drag has become not only a source of performance and entertainment but a source of artistic expression as well. Highlighting this, their exhibit ''Art Is a Drag: The Library Is Open" is being held in the Mary Idema Pew Library's Exhibition Space from Saturday, Nov. 4, to Wednesday, Nov. 29. The name "The Library Is Open" is a double entendre as the p hr ase is popular in the drag community and also highlights the location of the exhibit. "Reading is a type of subcultural communication wherein you reveal to someone that something they're doing is displeasing to you through a punny or snarky comment;' said Jae Basiliere, professor of women, gender and sexuality studies and an expert on drag culture. For Kaylee Britton, who uses they/them pronouns, drag culture has been an interest since their early teen years. They said from the time they were in middle school, they have had a dream of performing as a drag queen. "I found drag in eighth grade, and I don't remember how I initially came across it; I just remember in middle school I found it and I just latched right onto it:' said Kaylee Britton, a professional drag queen and founder of the exhibit. "I was like, 'Oh, yeah. I'm doing that one day. This is awesome? So every Halloween I would get dressed in drag, not very good, but Io get dressed up.
