Rhem Freedom Village Holland, Michigan September 28, 2014 Transcription of the written meditation Once in a while in the ministry of preaching I have discovered not only some fresh insight into the biblical faith as I worked on a passage, but some new insight into myself. Now on the threshold of my 80th birthday, it happened again. When I decided on my theme for today I was well aware that I would be probing the question of my life – the God Question. I have lived a “God-obsessed” life and that not surprisingly. On the day of my ordination to the ministry I received a letter from my father relating the fact that, when my mother was carrying me, he prayed that, should I be a boy (women’s ordination not yet in the picture), he would dedicate me to God’s service. Well aware that we don’t choose, God must call, one of my early memories as a child is his telling those who referenced me as a young lad that his prayer was that God would call me to the ministry. As a child I was a bit embarrassed but I got the message! Interestingly, I never considered doing anything else and I never rebelled against the pre-programmed vocational “choice.” However my ministry has been a journey of probing the God Question and the years of my retirement have only given me more time to continue the quest. I still read and wonder, question and probe. And, as I do that, I never doubt being held in the embrace of God’s love as I have come to experience it in the face of Jesus. When I decided on my theme – Restless Mind and Quiet Heart – Quest and Rest, I was well aware that I was describing my own spiritual journey – always wondering, questioning – always securely resting. However, as I began to gather materials and ideas for this meditation, I came to a realization that the God Question goes on and is alive and well to the present. I saw afresh, or for the first time, my own spiritual journey – a restless mind © Grand Valley State University   �Restless Mind and Quiet Heart: Quest and Rest Richard A. Rhem Page 2   seeking to come to a critical, intellectual understanding of the story of religion and, specifically, the Christian faith. But doing so with a quiet heart because of the fundamental trust in which I was spiritually formed. The insight into my own journey had to do with what was happening on the broader cultural scene. I was ordained in 1960 as a very conservative Reformed Christian minister. I’m sure you remember the 60s. Just for fun I googled the term and was reminded of that decade, so tumultuous, as much that had been taken for granted was put in question or simply overturned. The 1960s was a decade that began on I January 1960 and ended on 31 December 1969. The 1960s term also refers to an era more often called The Sixties, denoting the complex of inter-related cultural and political trends around the globe. This “cultural decade” is more loosely defined than the actual decade, beginning around 1963 and ending around 1974. “The Sixties”, as they are known in both scholarship and popular culture, is a term used by historians, journalists, and other objective academics; in some cases nostalgically to describe the counterculture and revolution in social norms about clothing, music, drugs, dress, sexuality, formalities, and schooling. Conservatives denounce the decade as one of irresponsible excess, flamboyance, and decay of social order. The decade was also labeled the Swinging Sixties because of the fall or relaxation of social taboos especially relating to racism and sexism that occurred during this time. From Wikipedia The world was changing around me. Time magazine for April 8, 1966, (the Easter Issue!) had a black cover with the question “Is God Dead? in red letters. The God is Dead theologians created quite a stir. The New Georgia Encyclopedia (August 6, 2013) reports: A popular debate over whether “God is dead” was occasioned by the socalled radical theology propounded in the 1960s by such theologians as William Hamilton, Gabriel Vahanian, and Paul van Buren. The best known of these proponents was Thomas J. J. Altizer, then a professor of religion at Emory University in Atlanta. The controversy reflected many of the broader cultural and political changes in American society often associated with that decade. “We must realize that the death of God is an historical event, that God has died in our cosmos, in our history, in our [existence],” Altizer claimed. His frequently provocative manner of speaking, which masked a more complex discussion taking place among academic theologians, for a brief time made him a minor celebrity in the popular media. Although the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche had asserted the “death of God” nearly a century earlier and a theological movement had already adopted the phrase to express the perceived incompatibility © Grand Valley State University �Restless Mind and Quiet Heart: Quest and Rest Richard A. Rhem Page 3   between a modern worldview and belief in a transcendent deity, the controversy did not fully erupt until 1965. For a decade before this, Altizer wrote, he “had been torn between an interior certainty of the death of God in modern history…and a largely mute but nevertheless unshakable conviction of the truth of the Christian faith.” It was in such a time that this very conservative, very traditional, rather insecure and somewhat defensive preacher began. I won’t bore you with the details but, after four years in Spring Lake and three in Midland Park, New Jersey, I had begun to realize that I needed help; I needed to go back to school! Again, without boring you with the details, I went to The Netherlands, the University of Leiden, being accepted as a graduate student by a great theologian and wonderful human being, Professor Hendrikus Berkhof. As I rose to leave his study after our initial meeting, I noticed a piece of paper pinned to a drape. On it in the blue ink of a ditto copy were the words of Tennyson: Our little systems have their day, They have their day and cease to be. They are but broken lights of Thee, And Thou, O Lord, art more than they. It was an epiphany moment. My little system was broken. I desperately needed a new understanding of the Christian Faith if ever I was again to bring the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. But God was more than my little system that was broken. Four years of intensive study, reading, writing, conversation with my Professor followed. During those years I was not sure if I would preach again, but I was learning and getting the education I never had, not because I didn’t have good teachers but because I was not open to learn. Now with existential hunger I began at least to understand the questions. The Spring Lake congregation invited me to return and I did. And so I began again, this time quite a different person, now preaching and teaching out of my European experience, the restless mind now dealing with faith’s question but, saturated with Grace, a heart at rest. But it hasn’t gotten any easier. If the 60s were revolutionary in society as a whole and the Death of God theologians challenged the very existence of God, there was no possibility of returning to business as usual. The God Question was in play. As I came to my retirement in 2004, a new generation of scholars created the new atheism. New Atheism is a social and political movement in favour of atheism and secularism promoted by a collection of modern atheist writers who have advocated the view that “religion should not simply be tolerated but © Grand Valley State University �Restless Mind and Quiet Heart: Quest and Rest Richard A. Rhem Page 4   should be countered, criticized, and exposed by rational argument wherever its influence arises.” There is uncertainty about how much influence the movement has had on religious demographics, but the increase in atheist groups, student societies, publications and public appearances has coincided with the non-religious being the largest growing demographic, followed by Islam and evangelicalism in the US and UK. The 2004 publication of The End of Faith: Religion, Terror, and the Future of Reason by Sam Harris, a bestseller in the US, marked the first of a series of popular bestsellers. Harris was motivated by the events of September 11, 2001, which he laid directly at the feet of Islam, while also directly criticizing Christianity and Judaism. Two years later Harris followed up with Letter to a Christian Nation, which was also a severe criticism of Christianity. Also in 2006, following his television documentary The Root of All Evil?, Richard Dawkins published The God Delusion, which was on the New York Times bestseller list for 51 weeks. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Atheism) Recently I have been picking up some well-worn books on my shelves, which I remember were breakthrough books, writings that made a deep impact on me in my quest to understand the mysteries of God, cosmos and human being. The British New Testament scholar John Knox, in his The Humanity and Divinity of Christ, wrote a statement that spoke deeply to me – gave me, I suppose, some self-understanding in my spiritual journey. Knox wrote: For our hearts cannot finally find true what our minds find false. (p. 107) I have on occasion rephrased his claim: The heart cannot rest where the mind cannot follow. In either case Knox’s claim is that heart and mind, though with different functions, must be in harmony. Intellectual quest cannot issue in a heart at peace. A peaceful heart cannot be secured without the mind’s understanding. And such equilibrium is not static, for life is dynamic, on the way. Thus quest and rest – a restless mind and a quiet heart. Religion is the quest for God and the great religions of the world point to the Mystery beyond human comprehension, beyond the change and decay that marks our common experience, the shifting tides of human opinion and practices – the Mystery that is sought as the truly Real, the final resting place of the restless human quest, the source and ground of being and the goal toward which all presses. The human longing for God is well documented in our story, the biblical story. The story of Job in the Hebrew Scriptures is a powerful and eloquent witness to © Grand Valley State University �Restless Mind and Quiet Heart: Quest and Rest Richard A. Rhem Page 5   the struggle to find God in the midst of human suffering. Determined not to yield to the popular theology and conventional wisdom of his day, Job refuses to accept the idea that suffering is the punishment of God for sin and wrongdoing. In the midst of his debate with those miserable comforters who visited him, he cries out, “Oh, that I knew where I might find God; that I might come even to his dwelling! …I go forward, he is not there; or backward, I cannot perceive him. On the left he hides, and I cannot behold him.” “Oh, that I knew where I might find God.” Indeed! Or the Psalmist – again one whose soul is cast down, suggesting that it is most often at life’s extremity that the God Question obtrudes itself – writes: As a deer longs for flowing streams, so my soul longs for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and behold the face of God? Job is a drama, not an historical account; the Psalmist is a poet writing a hymn. This is the stuff of poetry and theater because we are dealing with the depths of human experience, the longing for some clue or glimpse or token that our human existence has meaning, some significance, that it is not simply sound and fury, a tale told by an idiot. But it need not always be triggered by suffering or threat. Sometimes life experience itself simply raises the question – What is the meaning of it all? Nicodemus was a religious teacher, a rabbi, and in his own spiritual quest and questioning he came to Jesus to ask about the God Question, to which Jesus responded with the familiar, “You must be born again,” or “from above,” pointing, of course, to a spiritual illumination beyond the capacity of pure intellectual, rational thinking. And Nicodemus reflected what we must all feel at some time: “How can this be?” My soul longs for God. Oh, that I knew where I might find God. How can this be? Born from above? The God Question – the question that will not go away. What a fascinating quest is this quest for God, and this is a great time in which to be engaged in the quest and question. The God Question is alive and well. It will not go away ever for long, but it is my sense that there is more open discussion about God, about the spiritual life than has been true in my lifetime, and with the vast communication networks of our world, the God question flourishes as never before. © Grand Valley State University �Restless Mind and Quiet Heart: Quest and Rest Richard A. Rhem Page 6   In our human experience, as our minds remain open to new breakthroughs in the understanding of our cosmic journey, we know finally, intellectually we will not uncover the mystery that we call God. Are we then engaged as persons and as a human family in an eternal quest that knows no rest? No, for what we cannot discover intellectually we can experience as we love one another. In John’s Gospel, in The Prologue, we read, “The Word was make flesh and lived among us.” And the writer goes on to declare, “No one has ever seen God.” He then points to the Word become flesh. The writer of the First Letter of John repeats the statement of the Gospel writer – “No one has ever seen God!” But then, in a marvelous expansion of the Gospel’s focus on the Word made flesh as the place of revelation, the writer of the First Letter of John declares, No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and His love is perfected in us. Again he writes, God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them. The quest goes on. The cosmic journey continues to amaze us as the mysteries of the universe are opened and the restless human mind will continue to lay bare those mysteries. But in the meantime, a quiet heart rests in the Love of God experienced in our human love. The dynamism of the quest keeps the mind open, alert, full of wonder with never ending questions. Loving another, thus experiencing God who is love, the heart finds rest. Rhem Christ Community Church Spring Lake, Michigan April 18, 2004, Lent II Transcription of the spoken sermon It is a marvelous way to celebrate Eastertide with a Dance of Creation. It was a goddess of fertility named Oster who gave us the name Easter and the ancient people prior to the Axial Period, 800 to 600 B.C.E., celebrated their religious observances according to the rhythms of nature, the cycles of the year. And so, what a beautiful way for us to celebrate the coming alive of the earth on a beautiful day like this with the flowers budding and the buds bursting, to celebrate the goodness of God in the wonders of creation. Resurrection, as an experience of life after death, was really a conception that came to the fore shortly before the birth of Christ. There isn’t much in the Hebrew Scriptures about any life after death. They don’t even worry about it. The goodness of God in the land of the living was the blessing of God for the people of Israel. But, in those couple of centuries before the birth of Christ, there was increasing persecution, and in the books we call the Apocryphal books, that were filled with apocalyptic expectations, the intervention of God at the end of history, we find resurrection as an idea coming to the fore, and the reason that resurrection came into the consciousness of people was the fact that there were righteous, God-fearing people who were witnessing to their faith in God who were being killed. They were called the righteous martyrs. As the community considered the fact that these people were being killed for their refusal to deny their faith in God, they looked at one another and said, “Must not God in justice vindicate these righteous ones who have died for their faith and their honor of God?” And so, resurrection came to be an idea, a hope, an expectation that somehow or another, in the end, those who had died for their faith would be vindicated by resurrection, by God. When the community of Jesus’ followers, following his crucifixion, experienced him as with them still, when they experienced still after his crucifixion the grace that he conveyed, the love that he embodied, the freedom that he offered, they said, “He is not dead, he’s living.” And from their depression and their fears and their crushed hopes, they had a shift in perception and resurrection is what they called it. Resurrection is a shift in perception. It is a miracle; it is a miracle of © Grand Valley State University �A Shift in Perception Richard A. Rhem Page 2 love. It is an experience of an insight, the gaining of an understanding that is lifechanging, that is life-transforming. Resurrection is a shift in perception. Now, of course, we say today perception is everything and there is something to that, but that’s not what I mean. What that means is that the empirical reality out there isn’t the issue, it is our perception of that empirical reality. I do know the physicists among us would tell us that the observer affects the observed and I’m not going to get into all that philosophical stuff. This is just simply a straightforward claim this morning that a shift in perception, a change in understanding is resurrection, and it is life-changing. It is wonderful. The prison of our tombs, the stones are rolled away, the shackles fall off, the scales fall from our eyes and suddenly we get it, we see it. I think that’s what happened in the experience of those followers of Jesus in the wake of the crucifixion. Although in Luke and in John there certainly are resurrection stories that seem to intentionally want to emphasize a physical, bodily presence, that is not the majority of the resurrection accounts at all. The stories vary widely in the New Testament, as you might expect in the wake of an experience like this. But most of them are appearances, visions, and that’s why I take the stories of Paul this morning. Paul had a shift in perception. We saw him first at the stoning of Stephen. There he is consenting to Stephen’s death, this violent death which is the consequence of a religious absolutism and dogmatism that is threatened by any other understanding that believes somehow or other God is served by that kind of violent reaction. I suppose if it was the 21st century and if it was a part of the already boring and disgusting presidential campaign into which we find ourselves, it might have been Paul standing up and saying, ‘I, Paul of Tarsus, approve of this martyrdom or this killing.” That’s what he was doing. They laid their cloaks at his feet, the story said. And then he is on his way to Damascus, still breathing out threats, ready to murder, ready to haul people into court, to bring them to Jerusalem bound, men and women, those who were followers of the Way, because Paul, this absolutist, this dogmatist, was an angry religious man (There is no anger like religious anger, there is no more obsessive-compulsive behavior than stems from bad religion, and Paul was the epitome of it.). And then there is the light and there is the voice. What’s going on with Paul, how do we know? We could psychologize it all day long. Maybe there was something already simmering in his soul as he watched Stephen die. Maybe there was something in him, some decency in him that would betray the violence of his actions. But, in any case, he’s a broken man and he’s blinded, but then he sees. And after years of assimilation he becomes the Great Apostle who, in the midst of the Corinthian congregation of which he was the founder, in the midst of their own alienation and disturbances and divisions, could write to them of the indispensability of love, describing love in a beautiful fashion such that we call it the hymn of love and read it still with great profit. © Grand Valley State University �A Shift in Perception Richard A. Rhem Page 3 Paul experienced a vision. For him, it was resurrection, and a shift in perception created for him a whole new life. That’s what resurrection is. It is that movement from being all bound up to freedom. It is that movement from defensiveness and stinginess to graciousness and openness. It is the loosening up of all of that which binds us up inside and makes us less than we really want to be. That’s resurrection. It is a shift in perception and it is a miracle. I received an envelope full of goodies from my friend Jim Dykehouse through his mother, Nancy, this week and she said, “Jim gives you these things for you to throw away.” Well, Jim always gives me packages of goodies which he clips down in Chicago, knowing that we live here in the boonies and we don’t get much of that good stuff, so I always look forward to what Jim gives me. One thing I didn’t throw away was a piece from the Chicago Tribune, entitled “The Enlightenment of an Old-School Pol,” and written by Carol Marin. It is the story of Richard Mell. Richard Mell is an Alderman in Chicago; he was an old ward boss. Some of you are too young to remember the days when Chicago was crime-free because it was so corrupt at the top, when Richard J. Daley ruled and the old ward bosses kept everything in tight rein. Richard Mell was one of those. In the 80s he was rather notorious. His picture appeared with him standing on his desk, waving his arms. In 1987, there was an ordinance that was before the Cook County Commissioners asking for the protection of people of homosexual orientation from discrimination. The article reports, ...It was soundly defeated, 30-18. Mell was one of those who voted no. In response, gays in the packed gallery began singing “We Shall Overcome.” You can hear the regret in Mell’s voice as he remembers turning to a colleague and saying, “What in the hell did we just do? This is the worst vote I’ve ever cast and I’ll never do it again.” That vote took place on the eve of Deborah’s 18th birthday and, though Dick Mell didn’t know she was gay, he suspected it. Attractive and sensitive, he says, “she wasn’t interested in boys.” It would take two more years before she could tell him she was a lesbian. In the 90s, Deborah moved to San Francisco where it was easier to be an openly gay person than at home in Chicago. She was gone nine years. Though there were family visits back and forth, Dick Mell talks about “the time we lost with each other - dinners, birthdays, little things.” She moved back home three years ago. You get the sense in talking to the alderman that, now that his daughter is back, he’s not going to let her go or let her down....What Dick Mell has learned is what so many of us have figured out over time. It’s that homosexuality has a name and face....On this point, Dick Mell knows that ordinary people are way ahead of most politicians. And he has his daughter to thank for that, something he did © Grand Valley State University �A Shift in Perception Richard A. Rhem Page 4 last Thursday when he arrived at the police lockup where she was being held. “I was worried he might be angry,” said Deborah. Far from it. “He had a huge smile on his face and hugged me. I started to cry. I think he started to cry. And he told me what a good daughter I am.” A shift in perception is a miracle of love, and it frees us, and that’s resurrection. It doesn’t happen necessarily. One of the, in my estimation, most infamous leaders of the so-called Christian Right is Randall Terry. He’s the head of Operation Rescue which aims at Planned Parenthood, and his inflammatory rhetoric has been responsible for the killings of abortion doctors in clinics. You perhaps have seen him on television. Most inflammatory rhetoric conceivable. In the May issue of Out magazine, coming to the newsstands this week, his son Jameel, 18 years old, writes an article in which he acknowledges that he is gay. Aaron Brown on CNN, one night last week, interviewed Randall Terry who expresses his grief and his pain, but who continues to spout that same hard line of the immorality of homosexuality and of the devastating judgment that will follow its acting out, and so on. At the end of the interview in his own inimitable style, Aaron Brown said, “Mr. Terry, this must be very difficult for you, but let me ask you just one question. In the light of this revelation from your son and his obvious pain, do you at all question some of the rhetoric and the tactics that you have used in the past?” And Randall Terry’s answer in so many words was, “No.” Because Randall Terry would rather be right than loving and peaceful. So, it doesn’t happen automatically. One has to be open to a miracle. As I thought about that, I thought about my own experience. I remember, it must be 30 years ago now, getting a letter from a young man, a letter with pain such as I had never read on paper before, whose spirit was crushed, bruised, because a pastor had rejected him in his homosexuality. And I remember the next most painful letter I ever received, maybe a dozen years ago or so, same thing, only this time the rejection, like Randall Terry, was from a father. And I thought about my own experience, I thought about how fortunate I have been to meet people concretely in their humanity and to come to experience in that diversity, and to come to love them just as they are. I thought about 14-15 years ago, when Rabbi David Hartman came to Muskegon and the Jewish-Christian Dialogue, and this man so full of the love of God, so overflowing with warmth, said, “Do you have to deny my truth to have your truth? Do you have to deny my joy to have your joy?” That was the day he dialogued all day long with Krister Stendahl and those two beautiful human beings, one of the most brilliant and wonderful rabbis in the world and one of the most beautiful New Testament scholars in the world, and I saw them loving each other. Dear God, that’s resurrection, that’s a miracle of love, that’s a shift in perception which has enabled me then to move fully into that arena with joy, with freedom. © Grand Valley State University �A Shift in Perception Richard A. Rhem Page 5 Thanks to Boyd Wilson, our resident professor of World Religions at Hope College, who brought Diana Eck to Hope this past Tuesday. She gave a marvelous lecture. Nancy and I had dinner with her, so we know her, but it wasn’t just that personal relationship. It was just this marvelous lecture in which she painted for us our world as it is. She was not saying our world ought to be this way or that way. She was saying this is the reality with which we live, this pluralistic reality, pluralism in religion, pluralism in peoples of all kinds mixing up in this great global community of which we are a part, like it or not, with all of its implications in every dimension of our life. As I sat there, I listened to her portraying in such a positive way the possibilities of the acceptance of the other and the diversity, not trying to wipe out all differences, but embracing one another and celebrating one another in our respective diversity, I felt so light and I felt so free and I felt so thankful to be able to say “Yes, yes!” Then in the question and answer period, a young man stood up, well-spoken, respectful, who said, “I am an exclusivist.” He made his witness very competently and very respectfully, and I looked at him and I loved him, because I saw in him myself when I was a student at Hope College who would have been threatened to death by this marvelous lecturer, this wonderful woman, wonderful scholar. I knew him, even though he doesn’t know of himself what I know of him, and I project myself onto him, to be sure, but in doing so, I know that there’s a knot in the pit of his stomach. I know that there is a defensiveness that rises within him. I know that there is an anxiety. There is a fear, a fear that has to be raised by the wonder of the stories that were told by this articulate scholar Diana Eck, and I thought of myself and thanked God for the kind of experiences that effect this shift in perception that have been, for me, resurrection. This message is not about pluralism and religion in government, it is not about homosexual orientation or same-sex marriage, it is about a shift in perception, about that thing that puts a knot in your stomach and causes your face to flush and your blood pressure to rise. It’s about those issues, whose button being pushed, you feel yourself uneasy, unsure, causing some of you, perhaps, to strike out vociferously, and others of you simply to slink into the shadows full of unease. This sermon is about you and those things that are unresolved in your heart and your soul. God knows in our world today, polarized as we are about everything, we need to disband our egos long enough to allow the possibility of a shift in perception that can lead us from being bound up to freedom, from anger to peace, from violence to embrace in this global community which is so small that we have to learn how to celebrate one another in all of the diversity. Rhem Christ Community Church Spring Lake, Michigan Pentecost IX, July 24, 1994 Transcription of the spoken sermon Zophar: "Haven't you realized yet (How can you be so blind!) that the sinner's joy is brief and costs no more than a moment? Job 20:4-5 Job: "Why do the wicked prosper and live to a ripe old age?" Job 21:7 God: "I am very angry at you [Eliphaz] and your two friends, because you have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has." Job 42:7   I was thinking about the serenity and beauty of Psalm 23 as it was sung a moment ago. I was thinking of the melodious song, beautiful words, comforting and reassuring as they were floating over you. You seemed to be at peace and it reminded me of a conversation I had last evening with a good friend of mine who is a pastor. He has just gone through radiation for the cancer that has invaded his body. I asked him how he was and he said, "Doing pretty good." He added, "I'm speaking to God again." He said, "In the midst of it we kind of got separated for a while." Well, you know, all the wonderful religious comfort in the world in which we really believe, by which we live, by which we are undergirded and overshadowed, enabled and empowered, all of that which is so terribly important and so wonderful, sometimes comes into collision with our real life situation. All of a sudden it can evaporate, it can raise doubts and questions, and we wonder, "Where is God in this moment and in this darkness?" I think that that's what happened to Job. The poet who wrote this dramatic poem may have come into a crisis in his faith, or maybe, as poets generally are, he was a spokesperson for a lot of people who had come into a crisis of faith. What they had learned in Sunday School just wasn't working any more. They couldn't connect what they were experiencing with what they had always held to be true about God. So the poet raised a serious protest against the generally perceived wisdom of the day about the relationship of God to our lives. What the poet protested was in the question of last week—the one-to-one relationship between sin and punishment, virtue and reward. What he said was, you can't tell whether a person is virtuous or wicked by looking at their life—their happiness, their prosperity or their lack thereof. It just doesn't work that way in my human © Grand Valley State University   �Retribution is Not God’s Idea Richard A. Rhem Page 2   experience and what I see about me, even though that's what I once believed and that's what you friends are trying to convince me of anew, I don't believe it. I am not going to make a lot of progress today because when I get into a series like this I get to thinking about it eight days a week, and I find often that I move too rapidly. So I am stalling this morning. If you were here last week, you can leave now. (Laughter) No, what I want to say this morning is just a little different spin on what I said last week. This morning I simply want to say, "Retribution is not God's Idea." Tribute is payment; retribution is re-payment It reflects an idea of human experience and of the way the world is that gives tit-for-tat. You do "a", you get "b." You do "c", you get "d". The one who is turning the dials and pushing the keys is God, the moral cop striding in heaven observing creatures on earth, giving just "desserts," whether for weal or woe, depending on whether one is good or bad. That was a very early conception of things and, as I said last week, in saying that is not the case, we have got to make some qualifications. We have got to recognize that there is a whale of a lot of the Bible that says that's the case, at least as superficially understood. It would seem to say in many places in the Scripture that it is a matter of being good and being blessed—being evil and being punished. The implication of that was that if you are punished, therefore, you have been evil. No one suffers if one is innocent. There is a lot of Bible that would seem to indicate a very close relationship between being good and being blessed—being evil and being punished. We all know that there are certain patterns of behavior that engaged in will result in happiness and prosperity and wellbeing. And there are certain patterns of behavior if engaged in will result in disaster and self-destruction. So there is a certain truth in the fact that our human action and human behavior has its consequences. Don't hear me denying that. That is obvious. Maybe I should add another qualification and that is that to live in human community or human society we do need a system of justice. We live in a nation, under a constitution. That constitution is interpreted and reinterpreted, and its laws are applied. Apart from that, it wouldn't be possible to live in community or to have human society. I wouldn't want to live in a society where good and evil were just indiscriminately affirmed or where it didn't matter. It does matter. You can't live together unless there is some law, some structure, some order. Human beings being as they are, it is necessary that there be some enforcement of order. The great theologian of the last generation, Reinhold Niebuhr, wrote a book about society. I can remember being struck by his book many, many years ago where he said, "The ideal for human community is not love, but justice." I said, "Oh, come on. Love is higher than justice." But his point was that in society you cannot legislate nor can you enforce love. Love is not for legislating and love is not for enforcing, but justice you can legislate and justice you can enforce. I think that was at the time of the Civil Rights Movement in the 60s, and at that time © Grand Valley State University �Retribution is Not God’s Idea Richard A. Rhem Page 3   there were those who were saying you can't legislate this decency in community, and all of that. Reinhold Nieboer said, "Oh, yes you can. There is a standard of justice that can be legislated and it should be enforced because, even though we cannot effect through any human means a loving community, we can effect a just community." So, that is important. But having said that it still doesn't get at the nub of Job's protest. Job's protest was, "I am suffering. I am innocent." Therefore, there is not a one-to-one relationship between human behavior and consequence. Job was so convinced of his own experience that he was willing even to accuse heaven. But, really, he was buying in with his friends the idea that God was doing these things—pulling the strings and pushing the buttons, busying God's self with all of the stuff that makes up our life. He bought into that. But what he couldn't go along with out of his own experience was the fact that, therefore, if one is suffering, one is being punished for sin either known or unknown. So, he accused God of being unjust. That really got the ire of his friends and they went on the attack. Job had a lot to learn too, and we will get to that eventually (Out of the whirlwind Job had to say, "Whew, I didn't know what I was talking about. Sorry."). But the important point that Job made in the protest that was brought to expression in this dramatic poem was that there is suffering in human experience, there is tragedy in human experience, there are things that happen to us that are disastrous, and we ought not first of all to blame the victim. Or, if we are the victim, we should not blame ourselves. Job's point was that God never intended a retributive system to be put in place, enforced by God's all-seeing eye and authority. Job said, "I don't know what I am suffering. I don't understand suffering. But in the human situation, I am suffering. And I am innocent." His friends said, "Can't be." Zophar says, "The sinner's joy is brief and lasts no more than a moment." For if Job would point to someone, they would say, "Ah, yes, but that ephemeral, that's going to pass away. Just wait." The Psalmist in Psalm 73 had a problem with the prosperity of the wicked as Job did, but then he said, "Then I contemplated their end. Oh, you have set them on a slippery slope." Zophar was saying the happiness and prosperity of the wicked is an illusion and finally God will get them. Job said, "Oh really. Oh really! Is His candle so quickly snuffed out? Not what I observe. I see reckless, careless, people with grandchildren frolicking on the lawn and jumping on their lap. I see the wicked prosper." Now Job has got a lot to learn yet. Job is going to go through the whirlwind. Job at this point doesn't have it all right. But Job's friends have it all wrong, and that's the point. In the resolution of the book, which I read also, God says to the friends, "I am angry with you. You didn't speak truly about me as my servant Job did." "Retribution Is Not God's Idea." No tit-for-tat. No God striding around heaven observing your behavior to prosper you if you tithe and bomb you if you don't come to church. We preachers wish that were the case. On second thought, you can't be too safe! (Laugher) But that is an abuse of religion. That is a manipulation of people. That is speaking to people's vulnerabilities. I am always surprised at how seriously you take sermons. Don't believe me. Let me raise some questions we ought to think about, but don't expect me to give you a simple answer because I might be just as miserable as Job's friends, or I might be as off the track as Job before the whirlwind." The Wisdom Books out of which we are preaching really say to people, "Don't listen to preachers, begin to think for yourself." The Wisdom Books are books that call God's people to maturity, to stop using God as a security blanket, as a safety shield, using prayer to pass the buck to God when it is our responsibility to work at human community and concerns of justice and righteousness and compassion and to stop doing what Jesus forbids us to do anyway, and that is to judge other people or ourselves. William Safire in his book The First Dissident, in the quote I had in the bulletin last week says, "Don't blame the victim." Then he uses the example of the person with AIDS. Haven't you heard it? If you haven't, you don't watch preachers on television or listen to the radio. But if you do, if you have that addiction, I'll bet sometime or other you have heard one suggest that there is a plague on America, and the HIV virus has come because of homosexuality, and those non-persons coming out of the closet and making a big uproar in society. Job would say, "No. You can't do that. For one thing you don't just take a class of people and write them off. For another thing, you being people who are being called to maturity and to growth and reasonableness and decency, know from new information and data available to us today, that the matter of sexual orientation may really be a matter of orientation, not necessarily a matter of choice. The Bible has a lot to say about promiscuity in hetero or homosexual relationships, but it doesn't talk about orientation per se. So for people to then say, "There is a plague. God is judging." That is nonsense! It is cruel. And, it is not true. Safire says, "A woman is raped. Easy to say 'She got what she deserved.' Or people's houses are flooded because they live on the river bottom and say, 'Stupid people. God is judging them for their stupidity.'" No. Job says, "That's not what God is into. God is not into tit-for-tat. God is not walking a beat in heaven in order to get a bead on you and all of that." God says, "Here is light. Here is creation. Live it. Be responsible. Be mature. Stand up and be a human person." The God that Job is going to meet in the whirlwind that lies yet before us is a God that is going to blow Job away. Job isn't going to get all his questions answered. He is not going to get a nice neat scheme of things. I want to say at this point that if you have a good satisfying relationship with God and your faith system is working for you, far be it from me to try to move you from that. But as your pastor I know that some of you one day will come into an experience where, if you haven't thought these things through, your faith is going to crash on the rocks of © Grand Valley State University �Retribution is Not God’s Idea Richard A. Rhem Page 5   reality. Then I would like to be able to say to you, "There is something bigger and better." The reason to think these things through is that, if we should come into a Joban experience, I would hope it would lead us to the whirlwind of revelation in order that our God would not crumble before the assault of tragedy and human suffering, but rather that God might become grander and greater. For what Job finally had to learn—I think the outcome of the book would be this—is that God ought to be served because God is worthy to be served, that one should be in awe before God because God is awesome, that God is such that one can trust and cling even in the darkness, and that virtue carries its own reward. In other words, one ought simply to be "good for nothing." If one is "good for nothing," then one is good for the only good reason there is to be good. If one catches a glimpse of the grandeur and the glory of God, then one will have another way and a better way to stand in any storm of life. Job didn't have it all right yet. But in the end God said, "That other stuff, it's wrong. Rhem Christ Community Church Spring Lake, Michigan Lent I, March 5, 1995 Transcription of the spoken sermon My life and ministry has been changed through the observance of Lent. It is in the observance of Lent that I began to focus rather intensely on the story of Jesus, and in the last few years that focus has been transforming. I grew up in the church and in a wonderful Christian home and was taught as a child to love Jesus, and I was taught the whole story of Jesus and identified Jesus as Son of God, the One Who came into this world to die for us. My piety was expressed in the old hymn, "Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe. Sin had left a dreadful stain, He washed it white as snow." Then I began to realize that, while I should love Jesus and admire and trust and adore Jesus, as a matter of fact, there were people in the course of history who moved me more than Jesus. It's a strange thing to confess to you, but it's true. It began to bother me somewhat. Why is it that, for example, as a kid having to do a book review on a biography, I read a biography of Gandhi, and I was so impressed with that person? And then later, studying the while Civil War and recognizing the leadership of an Abraham Lincoln, I was really impressed. And in the 60's, with the Civil Rights struggle, Martin Luther King and the non-violent leadership patterned on Gandhi's methods -I was moved by this human person and began to realize that Jesus did not affect me the way some of these people affected me. And then it was such that in the study of the Gospels there was a development or movement that looked at Christology from below. You see, my Christology, my understanding of Jesus Christ, was from above, from God's point of view. That's the way you've learned it, too. I can remember struggling with that at some points. For example, at seminary one studies Christology. And I can remember studying that section in the Gospels about the temptation - you remember, Jesus was tempted in the Wilderness - and, according to our good Reformed theology, Jesus was really tempted, but Jesus could not have sinned. Now, maybe you didn't know that, but believe me, that's true. In our good theological systems, Jesus is tempted, but Jesus could not sin. Jesus was not only human, Jesus was divine. If Jesus Christ, human and divine, would have sinned, God would have sinned. That's impossible, so the temptation was real, but Jesus could not have © Grand Valley State University   �Retrieving a Dangerous Dream Richard A. Rhem Page 2   sinned. When it came to exam time, I had to write the answer to the question, "Could Jesus have sinned?" So, I wrote the right answer, because uppermost in my life was always to get all As. My father had taught me that. I wrote the right answer. But, then I wrote what I really felt. And I let the professor have it. I mean, the page smoked. I said it disgusts me, this kind of game we play, when you read the Gospel story and you've got Jesus in the wilderness in temptation, and then later we observe that and say he could not really have sinned. I really got rid of all my passion. I got my exam book back and the professor wrote across my answer, "Feel better?" And, indeed, I did feel better! So, there were those times that I struggled with the fact that my Jesus Christ was second person of the Trinity, Son of God come down to earth to live and to die, to take care of the atoning necessity and to go back to reign, and I treated Jesus Christ as a kind of divine interloper, one who dipped down here for a time. But, Jesus, for me, lacked something of that flesh and blood passion that I experienced in my own human experience. He was not really my brother. I was more impressed by Gandhi. To be sure, Jesus was pretty heroic. After all, he had a leg up on us. Then came to me that development of Christology from below, where there had to be some research into the real historical setting of Jesus and, as I began to reflect on that, I came to see that God certainly embodied Jesus, or Jesus was embodied with the Spirit of God, but Jesus was my brother. Jesus was flesh of my flesh and bone of my bone, and then I began to reflect on the whole Gospel story from that angle. On April 15, 1984, Palm Sunday, I preached a sermon entitled, "Jesus, You're Really Somebody." And that was a turning point for me. I was invited to come to Western Seminary to lead a Lenten preaching seminar and there were about 40-50 colleagues gathered there and I shared with them my excitement about how my preaching during the Lenten season had come alive with my understanding of Jesus as genuinely human. Well, it wasn't very well accepted, frankly. But, no matter. I continued to pursue that line, until in 1991 during Lent, I preached about The Way of Jesus, the Sign of the Cross. And then the next year the same thing, and the next year - The Way of Jesus, The Way of the Cross, the way of a human being fully open to God who proclaimed a different world and who died for the way he lived. And I come right back in 1995 and I want to say in these Lenten weeks, that Jesus had a dream. He had a dream of a new world, of a different way of being, and in dying he asked those who followed him to remember, to keep the dream alive. So, this morning we begin with the retrieval of a dangerous dream. Retrieval is a technical word. If you were in literary circles and engaged in the interpretation of literary documents of the past, which of course is very critical to interpretation of the Bible and very critical to the interpretation of the Constitution, but it's also done broadly in the literary field. Interpretation of documents of the past. How do you bridge the past and the present? The endeavor to do that is called the science of hermaneutics. Hermes was the messenger of the gods. Hermes was the god of communication. How do you take an ancient story and have it come alive © Grand Valley State University �Retrieving a Dangerous Dream Richard A. Rhem Page 3   so that it impacts us today, shaping our future? Well, in the study of literary documents in today's world, which is quite a broad endeavor being carried on by many, many people, there is what is called the hermaneutics of suspicion. You go to an ancient document and you don't just take it at face value, but consider, "What was going on in the society and the culture? What was the political situation? The economic situation? Why would this author put things this way?" An example of this in the New Testament is when the interpreter will go to the Gospel of John, where you have a whole controversy between Jesus and the Jews, and say, "At that time, when John was writing, there was real conflict between the Jesus movement and the ongoing Jewish community. There was real tension." And that tension will probably reveal itself in a document written at that time. Hermaneutics of suspicion doesn't just take it at face value, but asks what was going on behind there? But there's another hermaneutics, and that's what I really want to use in our Lenten discussions, and that is the hermaneutics of retrieval, where there is an honest effort made to retrieve, to bring back, to elicit from the past that meaning, that disclosure in order that it may become a disclosure experience for us today. The kind of thing when you read an ancient document out of another time and another place, a whole other world, and suddenly a light goes on and that which came to expression there, comes to expression again. That's retrieval. And what I hope we can do and where we want to begin this morning, is to try to retrieve that dream of Jesus. It's more possible to do it today than has ever been possible before, because there's been such intensive research into the Gospels and into the life of Jesus. One of the books that some of you have read and we've passed around is by Marcus Borg, Meeting Jesus Again For The First Time. Marcus Borg is a member of the Jesus Seminar that gets a little press once in a while, and he makes a very interesting and helpful distinction between the pre-Easter Jesus and the postEaster Jesus. They're not the same, you see. The pre-Easter Jesus is the Jesus that lived, ate, slept, sweat, taught, wept – the actual, historical Jesus. Pre-Easter Jesus. The post-Easter is that Jesus remembered after Easter, some decades down the line, in terms of the present experience of the risen, living Christ. Our Gospels are post-Easter Jesus remembrances. But, through research today, we have access more than ever before, to that preEaster Jesus. Studying his times. Studying his cultural situation. What were the politics of the day? What were the economics of the day? Does it matter, for example, that Jesus was at the lower end of the peasant scale, that Jesus' family had lost their property? Does it help us to understand Jesus if we understand in that day that life was organized according to a kind of holiness code, where you ate with some people and you didn't eat with other people. You followed certain practices in your diet and your ritual life. There were all sorts of ways in which life was structured then, just as there are now. Rhem Page 4   to go back and paint some of that, to understand some of that which was going on. So, we're looking at the pre-Easter Jesus. But, to remember Jesus is to recover a dangerous dream, because Jesus is not just the pre-Easter Jesus of history, Jesus is the living Lord of the Church, and throughout all of these centuries here and there, now and again, someone or some movement has remembered, has been captivated by the memory of Jesus and that energized them and changed them and they have become transformative agents in the world. For example, in the Second World War, in France, when the Nazis overcame the French government, there was a French puppet government put in place that cooperated with the Nazis, specifically in rousing out the Jews and sending them off to the concentration camps. There was a French Reformed pastor named André Trocmé. His story is told in the book Lest Innocent Blood Be Shed. Trocmé struggled with what he as a Christian had to do in the face of his context in time in France - should he cooperate? He could not cooperate. But the thing that shaped Trocmé in his very concrete decisions in that very existential situation was his memory of Jesus. He writes, "If Jesus really walked upon the earth, why do we keep treating him as though he were a disembodied, impossible, idealistic, ethical theory?" You see, if Jesus is just some kind of impossible ideal, then Jesus can be admired, but not necessarily followed. Trocmé says, if he were a real man, then the Sermon on the Mount was made for people on this earth. And if he existed, God has shown us in flesh and blood what goodness is for flesh and blood people. What's dangerous about remembering Jesus that way? It put Trocmé in danger of his life. But it's dangerous in the deeper sense; it's dangerous to the collaborationist government. It's dangerous to the ruling regime. The memory of Jesus is subversive. When Jesus gets a hold of one, when one says, "Oh, I see. I see a different world. I see a new possibility. I see the contradiction of my life, I see the contradiction of my society, of my church," when one is energized by that dream, that memory, one can become a dangerous person. One becomes a destabilizing person then. One becomes as Jesus was, a thorn in the flesh of the status quo and the established structures of life. Jesus' memory is dangerous, but it is precisely in the Lenten season that we are called to remember, and how better to enter the season than around the Table, the Table of our Lord, the Last Supper. As I said at the Table, it was his custom to eat with all people. To eat with all people was a political statement. It was counter to the accepted ways, the conventional wisdom. It was radical and it was disruptive. People were offended by Jesus. Particularly the religious people were offended with Jesus. When he came to his last night, it was as natural as breathing for him to say to his disciples, "Join me at table." And knowing that he was going to die, he broke the bread and he said to them, "Remember me. Don't let the dream die." That's really what it was. It was really no more than that. Rhem Page 5   this morning, but let me just give you a concrete illustration of what it would mean if we remembered Jesus at the Table. This Table, my friends, is here because Jesus gathered at table with all sorts of people. He scandalized the righteous because he would break bread with anybody. But this Table in congregations in churches all across the world, rather than being the Table of Jesus that invites all, has become one of the great divisions even within the Christian church. There are Christian churches that gather and I'm not allowed to come to the Table, because I don't believe just the way they believe, or believe and live just the way they believe and live, or recite just the right words. Isn't it ironic? Isn't it ironic that the Table, which for Jesus was the radical sign of inclusivity, could become a means of division even among Christian people? The Table was simply a sign of that broader inclusivity of Jesus who welcomed all, who ate with publicans and tax collectors, accepted the devotion of prostitutes, reached out and touched the leper. And yet the Church is a Church of walls and barriers. It is not simply the people who are hungry for grace and forgiveness. We have our walls up and our barriers erected. Isn't it ironic? If we really remembered the dream, it could be dangerous, couldn't it? For the Christian Church. For my life. That's what this season is all about. Remembering that Jesus died because he had a dream of something different. Remembering that world that he conceived of - a world of grace, of compassion, of inclusiveness, and seeking in this season to be transformed by the memory in order to keep the dream alive. Lent has changed my life and my ministry. I love Jesus. And it is the passion of my life to follow him. around a lot -Washington, New Jersey, Texas, and Colorado -Came back to Michigan in 2000 -Attended Forest Hills Central -Graduated in 2004 (00:01:23) Enlistment -Enlisted in the Army on March 17, 2003 -Did basic training and came back for senior year (military deal) -Family’s background, escapism, and Army history motivated decision (00:02:35) Basic Training -Did basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia -Intense -Still pretty “hands on” with the drill sergeants (old school training methods) -Intense -Made it clear that you were going into a combat zone overseas -Expected some it, but not other parts -Teamwork was foreign at first -Eventually came together -Myriad of types of people: young recruits, re-enlistees, and an Irish marine -Recruits were drawn to the infantry because of the Afghan police and camped at their checkpoints sometimes -Had Afghan interpreters with the -Afghan locals taught English -Viewed as traitors by the locals -Some were trustworthy, others not so much -Not much interaction with the Afghan military -Only used during major operations -Drawn from all over the region -Not very useful, considered a nuisance by US and Coalition troops -Stayed in the Khost Province up until they were supposed to go home (00:26:55) First Deployment to Afghanistan-Kunar Province, Chawki Valley -Time in Afghanistan was extended -Moved to Kunar Province to build a new COP (combat outpost) -Chawki Valley -Different terrain, different fighting -Noticeably more intense -Fighting the Taliban: locals and foreign fighters -Equipped with basic gear: AK 47’s, RPG’s, -Apache helicopters, F-16’s, A-10’s -Very gratifying sight in a firefight -Taliban would always initiate contact -Tactics improved over time -Superior firepower was instrumental against them -Platoon became close -No one was killed; some took gunshot and shrapnel wounds -Always wore body armor and helmets �-Patrolled on foot -Took part in meetings with tribal leaders -Trying to get the Taliban out of control -Difficult because the Taliban used intimidation and brute force against villagers -Ate MRE’s (meals ready to eat) in the field -Some guys bought local food -Living was animal carcasses, decoys were coupled with real ones -Spotting them was extremely difficult -Had to be vigilant to spot them -Primary mission as infantry was to clear and secure areas -No way to effectively do so -Kill all the Taliban in an area and they would just came back -“You have watches, but we have the time” – Afghan saying -Politics didn’t matter in the battlefield -New soldiers adjusted over time -Team leaders were very helpful -If you went back to your FOB you could keep up on world news -Usually a TV with CNN on -Remembers hearing about the Fort Hood Shooting -Limited sense of world awareness �(01:05:47) Morale in the Field during Second Deployment -Allowed to send emails or make phone calls after mission -Some missions could last up to a month -Married soldiers had a greater emotional strain -Couldn’t be there for their families -Was given a mandatory two week leave -Went to Las Vegas both times -Visited family -There was culture shock in returning to the United States -Returning to the U.S. was difficult -Worried about friends during leave -Returning to Afghanistan was a bizarre relief (01:08:40) End of Tour -Very beginning and very end of tour were very dangerous times -Soldiers got relaxed and complacent -Most casualties were taken at this time -End of tour procedure amongst troops -Arranging vacations -Buying cars -General packing up of gear (01:09:32) Coming Home -Coming home (permanently) is happy, but strange -Release of troops is staggered -Takes 1-2 weeks for battalion to get home -Flew into Fort Drum -Took a bus to McGrath Gym -Released to families and secured gear -Given a 48 hour leave after that -Had to return after that to wrap up work -2 week leave after that -Came home in March 2010 -Had no time left in enlistment -Decided to stay out and not re-up -Army wanted experienced soldiers to stay in as trainers, recruiters, or Rangers -Wasn’t sure what to do after military service -After initial uncertainty decided to go to college -Slim to no assistance for veterans -School benefits were easy to get -Medical compensation was almost nonexistent -Wounded Warrior Project was far better for that -Was only given a two day class about readjusting to civilian life -Impractical, most troops just wanted to go home -Strange feeling walking out of Fort Drum for the last time �(01:15:24) Reflections on Service -Keeps combat experience low key -Saves it for the VFW meetings and other veterans’ groups -Received better than Vietnam veterans -Getting a job was not particularly easy -Turned away because of impracticality of expertise, not because of animosity -Focused on leadership experience when looking for employment -Service made him conscious of how good the United States has it -Biggest struggle Rhem Collection Description An account of the resource Text and sound recordings of the sermons, prayers, services, and articles of Richard Rhem, pastor emeritus of Christ Community Church in Spring Lake, Michigan, where he served for 37 years. Starting in the mid 1980's, Rhem began to question some of the traditional Christian dogma that he had been espousing from the pulpit. That questioning was a first step in a long and interesting spiritual journey, one that he openly shared with his congregation. His journey is important, in part because it is reflective of the questioning, the yearnings, and the gradual revision of beliefs that many persons in this part of the century have experienced and continue to experience. It is important also because of the affirming and inclusive way his questioning was done and his thinking evolved. His sermons and other written and spoken materials together document the steps in his journey as it took a turn in 1985, yet continued to revolve around the framework and liturgies of the Christian calendar. Gilbert earned a B.A. in social sciences and art at Michigan State University in 1964, an M.S. in photography from the Institute of Design at Illinois Institute of Technology in 1972, and a M.S.W. from Salem State College in 1993. He is married to Barbara (McDonald) Gilbert, and has three daughters, Robyn, Rachel, and Anne. Gilbert took a serious interest in photography at the age of fourteen. In 1963 he joined the staff of Look magazine in New York as the second youngest photojournalist in the magazine's history. As a Look photographer from 1964 to 1966, he photographed folk musician Bob Dylan, the Newport Folk Festival, Simon and Garfunkel, the New York City Financial District, the children and facilities at the Manhattan School for Seriously Disturbed Children. From 1967 to 1969, Gilbert did several shoots, including that of folk singer Janis Ian for Life magazine. After moving to Chicago, Illinois in 1969 to attend the Illinois Institute of Technology, Gilbert conducted notable photo shoots of business and political figure Lenore Romney, and pursued more personal and artistic photography, focusing on urban and rural landscapes in Illinois and Michigan. He then joined the faculty of Wheaton College, where he taught from 1972 to 1982. In 1993, Gilbert graduated from Salem State College, Massachusetts, with a Masters in Social Work, and later pursued a second career as a psychotherapist. Douglas Gilbert died in June 2023. Throughout his photography career, he pursued both freelance commercial work as well as artistic work. His art photography is characterized by its classic black-and-white format, and features people, places and objects shot great attention and sensitivity. Gilbert's works are held in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, The Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, and the Grand Valley State University Art Galleries, as well as in numerous private and institutional collections.
