Every morning CB cleans our phones, computers and iPads with Clorox wipes and even though my fingertips smell of bleach I feel better about using them. Yesterday we did a little shopping in the grocery store wearing disposable gloves. Not one person looked twice at us. In the store we visited the staff were hard at work replenishing shelves with as much stock as they have available, Many items were completely sold out with little hope of more stock any time soon. Yesterday Broadway New York closed, Disneyland, Disneyworld and Disney Cruises have all closed down. Last night Governor Whitmer closed all Michigan schools effective this Monday. This morning I received notice that Monterrey Aquarium has closed. The United States has a crucial shortage of test kits. There is so much misinformation out there, starting from the top down that a section of the community are refusing to take this threat seriously. Its hard for me to look at the desperate situation in Italy where they have effectively closed the whole country to try and combat the overwhelming numbers of sick people, and then consider the federal response here. I think it comes down to each organization making its own best choice for its members or employees. The streets near our house are very quiet as more people are staying home. This is a whole new way of living for the foreseeable future and I have every confidence we can do it. Nearly 4 weeks. Where has the time gone? Seriously though, some days have gone by extremely slowly. Routine is really good but it may be a bit of a problem if you think “I have to be home from my walk by 3pm because thats when I have a cup of tea and a snack. I can’t miss that”. Well, such are the Days of my Life - if you’re under 40 that reference will have no meaning for you. Yesterday we went for our daily drive and walk. I always think: Nooo, I don’t want to! And then I’m always glad that I did. ��We look like we’re about to rob a bank but this is according to the CDC’s (Center for Disease Control) new suggestion: everyone should wear a mask outside their home. Here we are walking along another section of our favorite trail. We saw 3 other family groups with dogs, 2 runners and 2 cyclists. Murphy wanted to run after the runners and she was outraged that she couldn’t inspect the other dogs bums. She has no idea why she isn’t allowed near other humans or dogs and thinks its a cruel and unusual punishment for something she doesn’t remember doing. �Here is CB and Murphy on their early morning walk. ��And CB photographed this - just made to cheer us all up I think. So last night it was the inaugural meeting of the Benjamin & Lilley’s Book Club to discuss our first book. Here’s what the meeting looked like: And here’s what it looked like a few minutes later. �Yes, we did discuss the book in more detail than I imagined we would and we laughed a lot as the visual effects kept constantly changing. ZB nominated our next book “The City We Became” by N.K.Jemisin. We will reconvene on May 2 to discuss it and we now have 2 more book club members - welcome AW and BB. It was 45 minutes of fun and laughter and although we were in 4 different time zones and very far apart, I loved it and I am so grateful for the willingness of every family member to participate. It was almost midnight by the time EB got to bed in England! In other news, CB and I completed the Family Reunion Quiz with only 3 guesses and surprisingly we tied for 1st place with 2 other teams. Well done all of us! We won a virtual cup which we must bring to the real 2021 Family Reunion. Hmmm, tricky . Well, the numbers continue to climb in Michigan. Last count from yesterday: 14,225 cases and 540 deaths. In Kent County we have 157 cases and 3 deaths. In the US we have most states locked down but not all which is a bit like having a pee friendly area in a public swimming pool (I borrowed that). I continue to be amazed and sometimes angry at some people’s inability to recognize the severity of the situation. It truly is an invisible enemy and no one is safe. I read a dreadful story this morning on WaPo about how a funeral home is dealing with the massive overflow of dead bodies. They have reached the point where they offer nothing but cremation as soon as possible - no viewing, no funeral, nothing. They mostly just drive the �bodies in plain cardboard coffins to the crematorium where they are incinerated. And even there they are overwhelmed. In our area we are getting ready for an Easter egg hunt - so now I have a collection of bunnies and wooden eggs in the TV room window along with Poochie the dog/bear and the kangaroo with the joey. I’m running out of room. Today’s flashback: This was taken last year. CB was lecturing on a trip to Western China and the tour began in Beijing. This is the Forbidden City where the Imperial Palace is housed. All Emperors lived here from the Ming Dynasty to the end of the Qing Dynasty (1420-1924). It is a huge area and the day I visited (some years ago) was just as hot and sunny as this photo. It was crowded and we walked and walked and walked. There are a number of courtyards and I think they were intended to show the might of the Emperor who was also known as The Son of Heaven. Certainly you would feel cowed by the sheer size if you were hoping to petition the court and had to cross this courtyard first. �I enjoyed Beijing but this day tour was not one of my favorites. It was just too hot and we stood for ages in the broiling sun while our guide explained everything. One quirky thing about China: the time zone is the same right across the nation, spanning 5 geographical time zones. It is known as Beijing time. I find this very hard to understand as in the US we have a total of 6 time zones: Hawaii, Alaska, Pacific, Mountain, Central and Eastern. So in China, if it is 6am in Beijing and dawn it will be 6am and full dark in Xinjiang the furtherest western province. Well thats enough geography for today. In the supermarkets yesterday the shelves were seriously depleted and the lines for the checkout were 30 minutes at least. Yesterday the Administration declared a National Emergency but the Senate has yet to consider the bill offering relief with sick leave etc. The signs are not good that the Leader of the Senate will even allow it to be heard. I simply cannot fathom how anyone in this present situation can consider not doing their very best for their fellow man as well as themselves. I know , I am idealist, I have lived with that for 70 years and I’m not going to change now. New developments: Kent County (where we live) had 4 new cases of COVID-19 yesterday afternoon and although the Governor had restricted gatherings in our state to 250 people or less, Kent County announced restricting it to 100 people or less. Experts (and they really ARE experts) are predicting that this may last for 4 months or more. This changes life as we know it. You have to consider every action and reaction. A friend of mine said yesterday that her mother lives with her and my friend was going to the store in the evening. Her mother wanted to go too but she had to tell her she couldn’t come with her, because it wasn’t safe for her. Overnight in New Zealand the Prime Minister installed a mandatory 14 day quarantine for anyone flying into the country and the cruise ports are closed until June 30. This year I was booked to fly into New Zealand on April 17 on my way to Australia, and during my short 3 day stay enroute my nephew had organized a birthday party to celebrate my sisters 80th birthday. After the 3 days I was flying on to Sydney Australia to spend 3 weeks with my precious daughter ZB and her gorgeous son OB before we all flew back to the US in mid May for their visit here. Yesterday CB and I had the dreadful task of telling ZB, AB and my NZ family that that would not happen. We were all upset. Also overnight my son AB who lives in Melbourne Australia texted that his company had asked all management employees to take their mouse, charger and laptops home to be prepared to work from home. I think that things may escalate soon in Australia. But this morning, eating breakfast in bed with CB he showed me a video clip online of a city somewhere in Italy (where it is now illegal to be outside), where someone leant outside their window at night and began singing to their neighbors. Soon other voices joined in and the �beauty of their singing made me cry. It said (not in words) “I am still here, we are still here and I hear you”. I am still here. Our dog, Miss Murphy Brown, sits at the window and gazes out but the only thing she sees is the occasional bird. Yesterday CB moved the double bird feeder to outside this window so I could watch the birds too. It is a cold but sunny day and I would walk outside in the fresh air but the really strong antibiotics I am taking say little or no exposure to sun. So here I am safely inside while looking longingly out. I have taken to waking at 3am. I wake from a deep sleep and for a moment I think it is like any other middle of the night and then I remember its not. It takes some time for me to go back to sleep. Last night I wondered if we had enough cheese or bread or eggs and in the coming days would we be able to shop for them. This morning CB and I discussed a food shopping service I’m not even sure they’re still operating. I read online, and lets face it, I can’t stop myself. Anyway, I read online that college students on Spring Break have flocked to Miami Florida and are partying like there’s no tomorrow. In Austin Texas life continues as normal - no one has taken any precautions. In other states you have to line up for the grocery store and every sporting, entertainment, bar etc are closed. But also online are wonderful posts. Go to Cincinnati Zoo and Wildlife Park to see a very cheering video of Fiona the Hippopotamus swimming like a whale or porpoise. You can’t help but laugh. I try to keep in touch with family and friends and wonder how everyone is doing. Yesterday a young man walked along our block and knocked on doors to get people to sign a petition. I don’t think anyone obliged him. I felt very sorry for him as I know this is his job, but we’re isolating. Why would we sign anything with someone else’s pen? Thank goodness for my Kindle and the 45+ books I have on there. Thank goodness for Netflix, Amazon Prime (and all its partner subscriptions) and YouTube. Thank goodness for a warm comfortable house with clean sheets on the bed and clean towels in the bathrooms. Thank goodness for CB and his unfailing support and steady reassurance. Thank goodness for neighbors who talk over the fence at least 6 feet away. Thank goodness for my cell phone and my friends who I try to speak to regularly. And thank goodness for FaceTime and being able to see loved ones far across the globe. This morning as our shopper JF began assembling our order from our grocery store of choice, we have had an interesting online chat about substitutions and items I forgot yesterday. She will deliver our order soon, ring the doorbell and leave the bags on the front porch. It is very heartening to know that we can still get needed supplies with little extra charge. AB, my son in Melbourne, told me that they had to suspend online grocery shopping there as people were hoarding. I don’t think our service would allow that. I could tell you how many cases of the virus we have in Michigan and what new restrictions have been put in place but I’m sure you are following the developments where you live and may be heartily sick of more scary information from me. So, with that in mind, i want to talk briefly about Facebook. Many people have badmouthed it and many people have taken themselves off it, but for me over the past few days, it has become a source of amusement and wonder - and a lifesaver. Locally, Meijer Gardens, our beautiful gardens and sculpture park which features a stupendous butterfly exhibit in their greenhouse each March, has put the butterflies online in a streaming video. I will not be able to see the butterflies in person this year but I have already watched them on my iPad and its a reasonable alternative and it makes me smile. In Chicago at the Aquarium they let one of the little penguins out of the enclosure and he happily wandered around looking at the other big fish tanks. Museums around the world have sent out online coloring books of their masterpieces as well as virtual tours of their museum. Many meetings, classes such as Mindfulness are being offered online. My Women’s City Club is offering online games and activities on a weekly Wednesday post and they’re working on online Thursday programs for our members. Another advantage of Facebook is that we get to talk online to faraway friends. It’s so reassuring to find that we are all trying to stay afloat in this together and cheer each other up - and commiserate when necessary. None of us are experts at staying inside and away from friends and family. In two developments to be aware of for us in the US (and Michigan), as we are all using our credit cards for online shopping more than usual, be aware of credit card fraud - my company is overzealous in checking purchases. And secondly, all bars and restaurants will close for in-house dining at 3pm today. I’m sure we all saw that coming. �Finally, here is a new daily feature: a randomly chosen photo from much happier times. AB and I on a bridge In Edinburgh in 2016 on our way to visit Edinburgh castle. I loved Edinburgh with its old multilevel twisting streets and its stunning castle on the hill above the city. We ate extravagantly and in particular I will always remember the fabulous meal that AB bought us at a tiny restaurant called the Gardeners Cottage (I think). We sat at a long shared table and ate what the chef had cooked that night. It was wonderful. Such a happy memory to take out and enjoy again. Until tomorrow then. Rhem Minister of Preaching and Theological Inquiry Christ Community Church Spring Lake, Michigan Published in Perspectives A Journal of Reformed Thought October 1990, p. 3 As I write, the Middle East is at flash point. Saddam Hussein is calling the Muslim masses to a holy war, even though he himself has been one of the most secular of Arab leaders, allowing the fundamentalists no access to power in Iraq. Television news again brings us scenes reminiscent of the Iranian hostage crisis of some years ago. A Muslim cleric leads a huge congregation in prayers to Allah and then leads them in a rhythmic chant, “Death to America.” Hussein calls up images of the great Babylonian empire of ancient times and would appear to see himself as the new Nebuchadnezzar, firing the passion and imagination of Arabic masses with visions of a return to the greatness and glory of ancient time. It is not difficult to discredit Hussein, to puncture the logic of his rhetoric. One ought to be scandalized by his bald abuse of religion to incite people to hatred and to war. And it is difficult not to feel hostility for Muslim masses chanting “Death to America” and burning the American flag. Still, before righteous indignation rises up within us and rage consumes us, we must remember the tortured history of the region and especially the history of the last decades. The tangled web of Middle East affairs knows no boundary between the just and the unjust, the selfless and the selfish. So it has been throughout history. It was a holy war that Joshua waged against Canaan, the “Promised Land.” I wonder what it felt like to be a citizen of Jericho when the walls came tumbling down. But that is different, you say. God gave Israel the land. Canaan’s bloodbath was God’s judgment on their wickedness. Simple. Maybe. Maybe too simple. World history is history’s judgment, and certainly the biblical God is history’s sovereign, staying with creation, engaged with history’s unfolding drama. God’s prophets saw conquering pagan rulers as instruments of God’s judgment and grace. Rhem Page 2   sounding strangely like “Death to America” (3:64-66), also recognized Judah’s sinful recalcitrance. Where such prophetic insight is present and where humble acknowledgment of involvement in history’s tragic web of evil is confessed, there is hope. But such insight and confession have not always characterized religions, including the Christian church. A heart inflamed with hatred is not a hallmark of Islam; it is an ever-present potential of the human heart. And there is no more devastating instrument for inciting hatred than religion. Hans Küng’s claim made in the February 1990 issue of Perspectives is right: “There will be no peace among the nations... without peace among the religions. There will be no world peace without religious peace!” Muslim, Jew, and Christian have all had their turns at calling on the same God to curse the other. Is it not time rather to bless in the name of the one God? If that be granted, then how urgent it is for us to recognize the ecumenical vocation of the Reformed Church in America suggested by Arie Brouwer in this issue. In a piece appearing in the Christian Century recently, Brouwer cited Henry P. VanDusen, who spoke of “the denominational heresy.” Brouwer went on: Theologically, denominations are best understood as reform movements within the one Church of Christ which are temporarily denominated, or named, according to the reforms they embody until such time as those reforms are received by, and themselves reformed within, the whole Church, at which time the denominations lose their reason for being and cease to exist as separate bodies. Thus understood, denominations are themselves instruments of the ecumenical movement. They are members of the body of Christ struggling to reform and reconnect the body so that it may be whole. (The Christian Century, June 27-July 4, 1990, p. 632) Brouwer’s claim reminded me of the first time such an idea really registered with me. It occurred in an interview conducted by Paul Fries with Hendrikus Berkhof in the first issue of Perspectives. The RCA was trying to discover its identity. Fries asked whether a church can be both Reformed and relevant. Berkhof responded: I am inclined to look at this question from the other side and ask if it can be relevant and thus Reformed?... to focus on these identity problems might be both a sign and fostering of spiritual decline. Witness to a Lord who humbled himself and who was ready to lose his life for the sake of his Father’s kingdom, and for humankind, means that a church should not bother too much about its own identity, but concentrate on the identity of its Lord and his cause. Berkhof went on to explain that Reformed churches have less reason to be concerned with identity than other bodies: “The name implies catholicity and © Grand Valley State University �Peace Among the Churches Richard A. Rhem Page 3   carries the call to constant reform so that the church can become more Reformed.” Born at the crossroad “where traditional and modern in Europe intersect, the Reformed tradition is rooted in the Catholic tradition and open to the future sounding new calls and presenting new possibilities.” Küng is right; there will be no world peace without peace among the religions.
