N. Sargent My Dear Sir I have just received yours and am most heartily glad there is no danger of a change in the office of Commr of Customs I am astonished our old friend Bingham should have talked about “if a vacancy occurred.” He owes you too much to use an “if” in that way and beside he ought to know a change could not be made without very good detriment to the department. I have written Mr. Ferris as you requested asking him to call upon you. I presume he will do so. If you could make him think it best to join you and Mr. Hartley in putting things back where they were before Hale played that game �[Page 2] I should be much rejoiced. Mr. Ferris is for aught I know a friend of mine and I think he would have no hesitation if he were satisfied it would meet the wishes of his friends in this county of moving in the matter. I have not the least doubt but I could get a thousand names asking for my reappointment but I abhor that method of doing things. I wish the Judge could see it would be best for the party and for himself personally to make that change. Let Mr. Parmenter have his former place as clerk which would perfectly satisfy and then shape up the office about right and Judge Ferris would be pretty sure of continuing awhile at Washington. As it is he is just as sure of losing his place. The office is not run by Mr. Parmenter but a political clique who are not “Ferris men.” You must be satisfied by this �[Page 3] time. I am certain then Mr. Parmenter cannot perform the duties of the office with any kind of efficiency. If it were not for Mr. Orvis & Mr. Pierce who are very good officers he could no nothing. It is not possible to keep up an efficient force along the line without constant oversight. I do not think he has visited the offices once in a year where I spent more than twenty miles from the nearest office where any duties are collected and remains there year after year. He has four clerks there where I had two so his own services are not needed and so far as I know he does not attempt anything. I have spent much time there of late and can speak from personal knowledge. You asked in your letter, how we �[Page 4] were getting along with our settlement of old seizures. We can never reach it unless you direct Mr. Parmenter to do it. The money for seventy of those seizures has been in his hands ever since he took the office or very soon after. It is true he has told me more than ten times before we were in Washington last winter that all that money was forwarded to the Assistant Treasurer in New York. When we were in your office as you may recollect he said he did not mean that, but all the govt share for all the seizures was deposited. It now turns out neither statement was correct. Not a cent of the money had been deposited upon Seventy of those seizures. In Forty-four of those oases he has paid the Informer but held on to the govt & collectors share If you till order him to pay the collector and deposit the govt share it would go very far toward a settlement. If you do not do this I know no reason why he cannot keep those funds in the safe for years to come as well as he has for the two and half years past Most & truly yours H. He has very many friends in my state, all of whom would regret to see him removed from his present position. I have been thrown a good deal in contact with Mr. Sargent of late, and regard him as a most capable, honest, efficient officer. I do not believe that a change in his office would benefit the public service. His years of experience, together with his untiring industry and close application to his business gives him an advantage that none others possess. I remain, very respectfully yours, Geo. E. NATIONAL HOLOCAUsr REMEMBRANCE DAY CON3-REBATION AHAVAS ISRAEL As year succeeds to year, and human events once believed glorious fade to ghosts of uncertain light, yet there are enterprises of mankind which persist as immutable monuments of shame, despite our efforts to pull them down forever. I speak of the Holocaust: the vengeful, pitiless and evil systematic destruction of our brothers and sisters. A half century ago this scheme was born in its modern w'ustrial manifestation when the means of production were perverted into factories of destruction. Forty years ago, the Holocaust had become an institution of total warfare, not against armies, but against human beings: clerks, grocers, dock workers, housewives, and children. It was turned against people whose only crnme under this horrific code was their religion, ethnic ancestry, frailty of mind or body. Great evil demands greater labors for good. In The Netherlands as in other countries of Europe, and in The United States, there were those who found, sometimes by chance, the opportunity and means to counter evil. Sometimes singly and without proclaiming their decision and work, sometimes in groups formed to oppose a system of evil with one of good, men and women, who equally by accident of birth had been preserved for the moment against persecution, fought to preserve life and sabotage evil. Now, decades after the immediate battle was ended, we know these freedom fighters as members of The Underground, and we have brought them up into the light as examples of courage for generations to come, and as candles of remembrance of those who could not be saved. And while those old factories and camps of death are now mounds of rubble and empty shells, there are still spores left in the ground, where they wait in suspended animation for the climate to change. But these spores of evil, spores of death, cannot tolerate light; they cannot withstand the forces of courage and good which you also celebrate today. The words of our brothers in their despair , in their defiance and in their refusal to accept their tormentors objectives are a memorial to the spirit of man and the Jewish people. The words sear _ they call out to the living. But remember, we did more than survive. We won. The people of Israel lives, and while we live, we remember our fallen. �PRAYER iviaster of the Universe, Lord of the humble and the weak, Strength of the righteous and Hope of all who dream of goodness and justice; Mercifully hear our prayer which arises from the anguish in our souls as we recall the Holocaust in which 6 million of our brethren and sisters, your children of the House of Israel, were slaughtered and burned. Expand our minds that we may grasp the full horror of this reign of darkness and touch our hearts with true grief, penitence and resolution that we may remember and never forg~t. MAY WE REMEMBER LORD, AND NEVER FORGET. The burning synagogues, the brownshirts, the jackboots, and the yellow star of David. MAY WE REMEMBER LORD, AND NEVER FORGET. The arrests at midnight, the uprooting of millions from ancestral soil, and the destruction of families. MAY WE REMEMBER LORD, AND N£VER FORGET. The ghettoes, the starvation, the wretchedness and the faith. MAY WE REMEMBER LORD, AND NEVER FORGET. The thick smoke from Auschwitz, Dachau, Buchenwald; the mountains of bones, and the lingering stench of death. MAY WE REMEMBER LORD, AND NEVER FORGET. Gilbert papers (RHC-183). Douglas R. Gilbert (b. 1942) is an American photographer from Michigan. He was born in Holland, Michigan and is the son of Russell W. and Carmen (Andree) Gilbert. Gilbert earned a B.A. in social sciences and art at Michigan State University in 1964, an M.S. in photography from the Institute of Design at Illinois Institute of Technology in 1972, and a M.S.W. from Salem State College in 1993. He is married to Barbara (McDonald) Gilbert, and has three daughters, Robyn, Rachel, and Anne. Gilbert took a serious interest in photography at the age of fourteen. In 1963 he joined the staff of Look magazine in New York as the second youngest photojournalist in the magazine's history. As a Look photographer from 1964 to 1966, he photographed folk musician Bob Dylan, the Newport Folk Festival, Simon and Garfunkel, the New York City Financial District, the children and facilities at the Manhattan School for Seriously Disturbed Children. From 1967 to 1969, Gilbert did several shoots, including that of folk singer Janis Ian for Life magazine. After moving to Chicago, Illinois in 1969 to attend the Illinois Institute of Technology, Gilbert conducted notable photo shoots of business and political figure Lenore Romney, and pursued more personal and artistic photography, focusing on urban and rural landscapes in Illinois and Michigan. He then joined the faculty of Wheaton College, where he taught from 1972 to 1982. In 1993, Gilbert graduated from Salem State College, Massachusetts, with a Masters in Social Work, and later pursued a second career as a psychotherapist. Douglas Gilbert died in June 2023. Throughout his photography career, he pursued both freelance commercial work as well as artistic work. His art photography is characterized by its classic black-and-white format, and features people, places and objects shot great attention and sensitivity. Gilbert's works are held in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, The Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, and the Grand Valley State University Art Galleries, as well as in numerous private and institutional collections. Interview World War II Rich Natte Total Time (33:37) Background         He was born on August 10, 1924 in Grand Rapids, Michigan (00:19) His father died when he was ten years old (01:08) At the age of sixteen he had to quit school to go to work to provide for the family (01:18) He had two sisters that lived at home He was able to find a job at a furniture company (01:39) He was able to get a job there because one of his sisters worked in the office (01:57) o His sister was already married One of his older sisters was handicapped and could not work and the younger sister was still in school At the furniture company he worked in the machine room (02:55) o It was the only job at the time that he was qualified for  There were not many available jobs because of the Depression (03:31) o He worked there for two years before being drafted Enlistment/Basic Training – (03:43)     After he was drafted he was sent to Gulfport, Mississippi for basic training (03:49) He was in basic training for six weeks (04:55) Basic training included getting the soldiers in shape He was then sent to a carpentry school in Virginia (05:27) o He was chosen because he had worked in the furniture factory o He was told that he would be doing maintenance on bases (06:25) o The school lasted for roughly six weeks (07:40) o He was only asked one question before getting accepted into the school (08:46)  He was classified as “semi-skilled” (08:52) �Active Duty – (10:01)              After carpentry school, he was sent to Rhode Island for nearly a month before getting shipped out (10:11) o The soldiers did nothing in Rhode Island They landed close to Norwich, England (10:44) At one point on the voyage the soldiers were told that their ship was being followed by a German submarine (10:57) He was in Norwich, England roughly one month While he was in Norwich he was just waiting to get deployed to a base (11:35) He was then assigned to an airbase close to Norwich (12:08) o When he arrived, he helped maintain the airbase (12:34) o There was a building that they would work out of that included plumbers, architects, etc. o He was issued a bicycle to get around on the airbase At night he would have free time that he could go into the city (13:24) o He and some other soldiers would ride their bicycles into town o They would often go to see a movie, get some food, drink some English beer, and many other activities At the airbases the trucks would often unload by backing up and slamming on their brakes (14:26) o There were multiple times where bombs would go off – they sometimes killed some soldiers One time a B-24 came in to have work done on it o When the plane came in it slid and blew up (15:41) o There were roughly nine men that were killed from the crash He saw one of the American bombers approaching the air field being shot at by German aircraft o The American bomber crash landed in a local field (17:41) He saw Buzz Bombs fly overhead at some points (18:01) o Many of the Buzz Bombs were shot down by American planes o The bombs flew so low that they were out of the range of the radar (18:46) He served with the 491st Engineer Battalion o He had temporarily served with the 492nd Engineer Battalion when the airbase was temporarily shut down  They were sent there to help clean up and do maintenance work (20:13)  He was only there for a few weeks After the war was over in Europe, he went to France (20:50) o He was in France for one month o While he was there he did not do anything – he was just waiting to be assigned (21:12) o They believed they were going to be shipped to the Pacific �      He received an honor from a battle that he was not in – his whole company received the award even though only some were involved (22:31) He was sent back to America via ship (23:31) o They landed in New York and the first thing he saw was the Statue of Liberty When he landed in America, he received a 45 day leave (25:54) o It was technically a furlough but they did not call it that o He went home for the 45 days o He was able to see his family and hang out with his friends (26:22) He was discharged roughly two or three months after he had been back from leave During his last few months the men tried to stay physically active o They would play basketball, go into town, etc. o It was much more relaxed once the soldiers came back to the United States (27:48) o He was waiting to earn enough points to be discharged He was let go from Europe before others with more points because his job was less important (28:37) After the Service – (29:40)    Once he was discharged he was supposed to take a train home but instead rode with a friend from Grand Rapids (29:57) o When he got home he just walked in the front door o His family was at the train station waiting for him He then looked for work but was unable to find any (31:03) o He ended up unemployed for some time o He eventually found a job with a He was forced to quit his schooling at the age of sixteen so that he could provide for his family. Rich found a job at a local furniture store until being drafted in 1943. He spent six weeks at basic training in Gulf Port, Mississippi and spent an additional six weeks at a carpentry school in Virginia.
