Representatives from seven communities that are in the research and planning stages for volunteer
centers have contacted VCM for assistance: Dickinson County, Eaton Rapids, Gladwin, Eaton
Rapids, Iosco County, Jackson, and Macomb County. Ann Arbor Community Foundation has
contracted with a consultant to assess community need and determine next steps in the possible reopening of a volunteer center.
Highlights of initiatives and activities:
>
Volunteerism SuperConference: March 10-11, 1997; over 600 participants attended our first
statewide conference which received very favorable reviews.
>
George W. Romney Fund Endowments: 18 applications received from current volunteer centers
totaling $450,000; $112,500 released in 1997; $300,000 remains in fund for future allocations.
>
ConnectMicbigan: The ConnectMicbigan campaign for volunteerism was announced at the October
20, 1997 Launch of America's Promise in Michigan. This campaign will be fully operational by
spring 1998, including radio and television psa' s, billboards, and promotion of a " 1-800"
volunteerism hotline.
»
VCM AmeriCorps - 15 full time and 22 part-time members served in ten communities to promote
youth vo1unteerism in schools, agencies, and community events. Development of youth projects and
strengthening volunteerism infrastructure led to increased collaboration and intergenerational projects
within communities.
»
New Partnerships VISTA - 15 members in 5 communities focused on the promotion of community
collaboration in economically disadvantaged areas and youth involvement in community change.
(Partnership with MCSC and CMF.)

Make A Difference Day - October 25, 1997; all member volunteer centers participated in the
seventh annual event; through our continued partnership with MCSC and other state organizations a
total of over 200 projects were completed statewide.

"Sink or Swim: The Tide of Volunteer Management"- over 100 participants statewide attended
our four regional workshops held in October and November, focusing on 'The Four R's" of basic
volunteer management; family, employee and youth volunteerism; and community collaboration.

"Working Together Works! Promoting Community and Volunteer Partnerships": FIA's
MPCB/ Volunteer Conference, held on Tuesday, October 21, 1997 at the Lansing Center involved
over 300 participants, including representatives from 21 volunteer centers. Focus ofVCM
involvement was through the planning committee, with the emphasis of attendance on improved
cross-sector partnerships and collaboration.

MAVA Partnership: Approval by the MNA board (December, 1997) finalized the partnership with
the Michigan Association of Volunteer Administrators (MAVA). MAVA funds will be transferred to
MNA upon completion of an acceptable audit and MAVA members will now be recognized as MNA
members. Similarity of membership needs and program mission aligns MA VA closely with VCM
through member support services and technical assistance.

Capacity Building Grants: Final reports were received and approved for the 1996-97 award
recipients (totaling $35,000) and the process for 1997-98 allocations ($15,000 remaining in fund) was
started.

�Volunteer Centers of Michigan
Capacity Building Grant Recipients
1997-98
In its efforts to strengthen existing volunteer centers, Volunteer Centers of Michigan (VCM) in partnership
with the Michigan Nonprofit Association secured $50,000 from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to develop a
capacity building grant process. $35,000 was disseminated in phase one (1996-97), with the remaining
$15,000 being reserved for phase two (1997-98). In keeping with the spirit of the Volunteer Center 2000
vision, a concept that was developed through the Points of Light Foundation in partnership with local
volunteer centers, VCM adapted seven capacity building themes which were applied to both of the capacity
building grant cycles. Michigan's local centers were strongly encouraged to submit proposals that fell into
one or more of the following areas: leadership, collaboration, diversity, fund development, marketing,
impact evaluation, and technology. Six volunteer centers were funded through phase two of the capacity
building grant process:
Volunteer Center of Isabella County (Mt. Ple.a sant): $3 ,000 to assist with technology and hardware
upgrades, which will result in more effective local marketing efforts and the refinement of their youth
volunteer program. In addition to improved volunteer referral and tracking mechanisms, the center will
develop and disseminate a Youth Volunteer Guide to Service.
The Resource Center (Flint/Genesee County): $3 ,000 to assist with the purchase and installation of a
computer system with a local area network (LAN) capable of housing a comprehensive database and
information and referral system. The Resource Center will play the lead in the Greater Flint
community in ongoing asset mapping of youth services and volunteer opportunities, and in compiling
directories important to initiative building and volunteer placement.
Volunteer Center of Otsego County (Gaylord): $3,000 to assist with the purchase of a computer,
printer and Volunteer Works Software for this new center, and to provide training for two staff
members which will establish a volunteer management information system that will support the
programmatic objectives of the center.
Volunteer Center of Lapeer County: $3,000 to assist with their volunteer management technology
upgrade. An improved volunteer referral and matching system will allow them to be more efficient and
effective, making more appropriate placements to a larger number of partner agencies. Improved
technology will also assist them in their marketing efforts.
Voluntary Action Center of Greater Kalamazoo: $2,000 to assist with technology upgrade (hardware)
and an improved volunteer referral and tracking mechanism. Technology upgrades \vill increase staff
efficiency and effectiveness, allowing the volunteer center to better serve individuals, groups and
agencies throughout their service area. The upgrades will also allow the center to track referrals,
determine actual placement, and measure impact.
Volunteer Services of United Way (Traverse City): $1,000 to assist with the initial stages oftheir
corporate volunteer council development. The Corporate Volunteer Council will recruit new business
volunteer programs and will work to enhance those already in existence, encouraging them to help
address community problems and concerns through volunteerism.

MNA Board of Trustees Meeting - June 16, 1998
This memorandum is to advise you of the next MNA Board of Trustees
and Executive Committee meeting.
Board Meeting
The MNA Board will meet on Tuesday, June 16, 1998 from 10:00 a.m. noon at the University Club in Lansing. Please complete and return the
enclosed response form by mail or fax to the MNA office by June 1, 1998.
Materials will be sent to your office prior to the meeting.
Executive Committee Meeting
Members of the MNA executive committee will meet prior to the MNA
Board of Trustees meeting on June 16 from 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. at the
University Club. Please indicate your attendance on the enclosed response
form and return it by fax or mail to the MNA office by June 1, 1998. An
executive committee meeting agenda will be included with your board
meeting materials.
Please call the MNA office if you have any questions. We look forward to
seeing you on June 16th.

Michigan Campus Compact
Quarterly Update
June, 1998
MEMBERSHIP
New Membersf
Michigan Campus Compact has two new members. David Fry, President of Northwood
University and Eric Gilbertson, President of Saginaw Valley State University became
members following the May 11 Council of Presidents meeting.
GRANTS
McGregor Fund
Michigan Campus Compact received a grant from the McGregor Fund for $75,000 to be paid
over three years. The grant will be used to fund Venture Grants to higher education institutions in
the metropolitan Detroit area and is intended to encourage additional institutions in this region to
become members of Michigan Campus Compact.
Corporation for National Service Learn and Serve America: Higher Education Grant
Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Illinois Campus Compact organizations have reapplied for year two
funding for the Midwest Collaboration: Advancing Service-Learning Through University
Citizenship grant. The focus of this grant is to provide faculty with professional development and
course development support while working with colleges and universities to institutionalize
community service and service-learning on their campuses. MCC should receive notice
regarding the renewal of the grant in early September.

Scholarship of Engagement (Round Two) Grants, totaling $8.835. were awarded to
six faculty members who will be infusing service-learning into their course
curriculum, research, or professional service during round two of funding. There was
a total of $25,349 requested by 14 institutions of higher learning in the state. These
funds will be utilized from March 1, 1998 - June 30, 1998.
MCC Faculty Fellows who received grants to develop a service-learning course,
conduct research around the class topic, and do professional service with a
community agency have met as a community of scholars. Their discussion focused
around challenges, innovative strategies and theory of service-learning. They will be
meeting again on June 18-19 to continue their discussions and to share their findings.
Fetzer Institute Grant
The John Fetzer Institute awarded MCC a $90,165 grant for Exploring the Connections of
Spiritual Formation and Service within Collegiate Service-Learning Communities. Michigan
Campus Compact selected eight faculty members who are engaging in scholarship around some
aspect of spirituality and service-learning. These faculty members met at the Fetzer Institute on
Friday, February 20 to discuss their projects, to form a network and to discuss the specifics of the
monograph to be published. The grant recipients will meet again in May to share their initial
draft chapters of the monograph.
To date, MCC has hosted three of the four renewal retreats at the Fetzer Institute. The Student
Community Action Network (SCAN) renewal retreat was held on February 20-22; the Faculty
renewal retreat was held on February 27-March 1; and the Campus Compact (network directors
and national staff) renewal retreat was held on March 20-22.
The SCAN retreat was facilitated by George Otero, founder and director of las Palomas de Taos,
a nonprofit residential educational center devoted to innovative educational programs that
increase people's understanding of the world. Cheryl and Jim Keen hosted the Faculty retreat.
�Cheryl also hosted the Campus Compact retreat. Cheryl and Jim are co-authors of Common Fire:
Lives of Commitment in a Complex World. They currently share a faculty position at Antioch
College, where Cheryl teaches in the Self, Society and Culture department and Jim in the Social
and Global Studies department.
The retreats were extremely well attended and provided an opportunity for deep, meaningful
reflection for the participants. They had time to reflect on why they were involved in service and
to strengthen their call to service as well as to begin or build on friendships among colleagues.
Venture Grant Cycle 16
The MCC Venture Grant Cycle 16 RFP's were distributed on February 20, and were due April
17, 1998. Seven proposals were submitted with a total request of $17,500. Approximately
$15,000 is available for Venture Grant Cycle 16 through the Marriott Corporation and the David
Whitney Fund. Financial awards ranged up to $2,500. Final approval was given to six institutions
for full or partial funding totaling $13,965. The grant cycle begins on August 1, 1998 and
concludes on May 31, 1999.
PROGRAMS
Midwest Presidents' Leadership Colloquium
The 1998 Midwest Presidents' Leadership Colloquium will be held on June 22, 1998 from 9:00
a.m. - 4:00 p.m. President Edward A. Malloy at the University of Notre Dame will host the
Colloquium. There will be a series of keynote addresses and discussion sessions around a variety
of topics pertinent to college and university presidents. The keynote speakers will be Martha
Nussbaum and Lou Nanni. There will also be a panel discussion on "The Future of Campus
Compact". All presidents in the state are invited to attend. The Colloquium is co-sponsored by
Campus Compact, the University of Notre Dame and the Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota,
and Ohio Campus Compacts.
Midwest Community Service Directors Conference
The 1998 Midwest Community Service Director's Conference will be held on Thursday, August
6-7 at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. The conference is for professionals and graduate
students who coordinate community service and service-learning experiences on college
campuses in the Midwest. The goal of the conference is to provide participants with a keynote
presentation, opportunities to network with colleagues across the Midwest, and to gain and share
valuable information on relevant service-related issues.
Service Leadership Camp
The 1998 Service Leadership Camp will be held on September 18 through September 20, 1998 at
YMCA Storer Camp in Jackson, MI. The leadership camp is designed to provide an opportunity
for campuses to develop their community service plans for the upcoming school year as well as to
develop their teams and to network across the State. Registration information has been sent to all
higher education institutions in Michigan. There will be a differentiation in registration fee for
members and non-members.
1998 Faculty Institute on Service-Learning
^
Next year's Institute will be held at Olivet College on December 4, and will be keynoted by Dr. ^
Parker Palmer. Dr. Palmer is a writer, teacher, and activist who works independently on issues in
education, community, leadership, spirituality, and social change. His recent book titled The
Courage to Teach: Exploring the Inner Landscapes of a Teacher's Life was just released.
Faculty/Staff Community Service-Learning Award
Nominations for the 1998 Faculty/Staff Community Service-Learning Awards were distributed in
February' and are due in Mid May. One faculty or staff recipient is named from each of the
�member campuses. Recipients will be recognized at the Faculty Institute on Service-Learning,
December 4.
Annual Student Recognition Ceremony
Over 100 people attended the 1998 Annual Student Recognition Ceremony held on Saturday,
March 28 at the Kellogg Center in East Lansing. One student from each member institution
received the Outstanding Community Service Award and four students received the Commitment
to Service Award. President Alan Stone, Chair of MCC, presented the students with their awards.
Many faculty, staff, and family members were in attendance to recognize these outstanding
students.

AWARD RECOMMENDATIONS
1. Adrain College: Service for Responsible Lives
The goals of the Service for Responsible Lives project are to: 1) Integrate a service learning
model into the Adrian College curriculum; 2) Bring Adrian College students, faculty and staff
together in a collaborative effort to enhance their community outreach initiatives; and to 3) Place
college student volunteers in a variety of non-profit agencies throughout Lenawee County. This
will be accomplished through providing faculty workshops, hosting guest presenters and
providing developmental mini-grants, as well as distributing a service learning resource manual.
Allocation: $2,500
2. Central Michigan University: International Service Learning in the Helping Professions
The goal of this grant is to create an interdepartmental course titled International Service
Learning for the Helping Professions. This course allows students from various disciplines to
participate in an international service-learning experience and receive academic credit. It will
also be a prerequisite for any student doing an international service-learning project. Central
Michigan University hopes to strengthen and expand cooperative ties overseas where educational
programs are already established.
Allocation: $2,315
3. Grand Rapids Community College: Learning, Leading, and Serving Program
This grant would allow the Office of Student Activities and Service Learning an opportunity to
design and implement a new servant leadership development program. This program will require
a yearlong commitment from 50 students to participate in a fall semester leadership seminar
series that will prepare them for a spring semester community service project. Each participant
will also have additional opportunities to be exposed to many other leadership development
experiences throughout the year.
Allocation: $1,650
4. Eastern Michigan University: America Reads Research
Little is known about the impact of university tutors on the children in AmericaReads programs.
The tutors reflect a variety of majors, receive various degrees of training, and tutor in school-day
programs, after-school programs and community sites. The Eastern Michigan University
AmericaReads Evaluation Project explores the literacy tutoring effectiveness of 30 AmericaReads
community service tutors. The results will be used to modify training and activities as indicated
and disseminated to others administering AmericaReads programs through the AmericaReads
ListServ and similar dissemination opportunities.
Allocation: $2,500
�5. Olivet College: Club Serve
Students Organizing Community Service (SOCS), formed in 1996 has as its mission to bring the
campus community together through community service and volunteer activities. In an effort to
coordinate community service activities, SOCS is proposing the establishment of Club Serve, an
office dedicated to assist students in finding service opportunities. This office would serve to
centralize the service projects on Olivet's campus. By creating this office, all students, regardless
of their involvement in clubs or organizations, would have access to the many community service
projects on campus. In addition, several annual service projects would be coordinated, bringing
the campus together on a regular basis to engage in service together.
Allocation: $2,500
6. University of Michigan: Classroom Partnership
Students Establishing Educational Dreams (SEED) is a University of Michigan student
organization dedicated to helping young children realize the importance of education. Through
the Classroom Partnership program, student organizations will be matched with classes from
Noble and Stellwagen Elementary Schools'in Detroit. Each month the University of Michigan
students will work with children on hands-on academic activities. By exposing children to
positive role models, SEED hopes to plant in the minds of children the benefits of hard work and
dedication in school.
Allocation: $2,500

NONPROFIT OUTREACH
June 16, 1998
Membership Update: In April an MNA promotional flyer was sent to prospective members throughout Michigan. The membership application/flyer highlighted MNA's mission, affiliate members, benefits and services and offered a $25 discount off the
registration fee for the 1998 Volunteerism SuperConference. As a result of this "limited time" promotion, MNA recruited 24
new members. As of May 30, 1998, MNA has increased its membership by 43 members, for a total of 464 members.
MNA Website: Visit the new MNA Website @ http://www.mna.msu.edu. The site was created by Steve Hoffman, Coordinator of Design and Publications at Olivet College. Website information includes the MNA membership roster, Classified Connection (nonprofit classified ads) job postings, rates and ad deadlines, "Save the Date" info on trainings, special promotions, and
mini-grant RFP deadlines. Future information will include highlights of the monthly Member Update, information for purchasing the 1998 Compensation & Benefits Survey. Nonprofit Management Training Resource Catalog, and various other publications, and registration information for the Grantmakers/Grantseekers X conference in the spring of 1999.
MNA Member Update: MNA's monthly publication continues to keep members informed on public policy alerts and updates;
mini-grant opportunities; calendar of events; classified ads; featured articles by guest authors, member benefits, discounts, and
services; philanthropic news, new and renewed members, and various other topics of interest as they become available.
1998-99 MNA Member Directory: The second edition of the MNA Member Directory will be completed in July, 1998. The
publication includes information about each member organization, MNA member privileges, programs, toll free telephone number and website, MNA Board of Trustees and staff, Michigan Campus Compact member institutions, and Volunteer Centers of
Michigan members. A complimentary copy of the directory will be distributed to each MNA member as part of the member
benefit program. To date, nine sponsors (totalling $5,650) have reserved ad space in the directory in exchange for their financial
support of this MNA publication.
Nonprofit Management Training Resource Catalog: A consortium composed of the Council of Michigan Foundations (CMF);
MNA: and Presidents Council, State Universities of Michigan developed this catalog with grant support from the W.K. Kellogg
Foundation. The catalog serves as an excellent resource for nonprofit organizations and available via the World Wide Web.
MNA members received a copy with their June Member Update.
1998 Michigan Association & Nonprofit Compensation & Benefits Survey: MNA, in partnership with the Michigan Society
of Association Executives (MSAE), has released the 1998 MSAE/MNA Compensation & Benefits Survey, a comprehensive
statewide salary study of senior association and nonprofit management staff. The results are categorized by organization, budget,
scope, staff position, and years in position, and provides a benchmark for human resource management information on 30
employment positions. MNA members who participated in the study will receive a complimentary copy of the survey along with
a "confidential" individual analysis comparing their base salary with similar positions. The information provided for this survey
is confidential and used solely to compile survey results (contracted by Management Resource Centers, Inc. an independent
consulting firm). Member cost: $75 and Non member cost $ 100.
Health/Dental Care Coverage As MNA Member Benefit: MNA members now have the opportunity to subscribe to the
Blue Cross/Blue Shield health and dental care benefit program. This cost-effective member benefit is offered by MNA in
partnership with the Michigan League for Human Services.

1. Welcome and Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Chairperson R. Cole at
10:17 a.m.
2. Review of Minutes: The minutes of the December 2, 1997 meeting were approved as
printed and distributed.
3. Chair's Report: R. Cole welcomed and thanked trustees for their attendance. He commented
on the Volunteerism SuperConference scheduled for May 4 and 5th and thanked M. Engler
for securing Colin Powell as the keynote speaker for this event. He acknowledged outgoing
trustees J. Barrett, V. Carr, M. Kramer and D. Sieger for their service to MNA. R. Cole
announced that the nominating committee was appointed to review and present nominations
for board officer positions at the next meeting. R. Cole concluded his report by a gift
presentation to MNA staff members M. Grill and A. Hegarty for their service to MNA. Both
have accepted new jobs. R. Cole announced the next MNA Board meeting is scheduled for
June 16, 1998.
4. President's Report: S. Singh acknowledged and thanked M. Grill and A. Hegarty for their
contributions to MNA. He commented on the progress of MNA's evaluation being
conducted by Formative Evaluation Research Associates (FERA). A questionnaire
regarding MNA's programs and services was distributed to the board to be completed and
returned to the FERA office.
5. Finance Committee Report: J. King reviewed MNA's financial statements ending January
31, 1998. J. King stated that MNA is waiting for a response from the Charles Stewart
Mott Foundation on a $200,000 grant request for the Michigan Public Policy Initiative.
Expenses for this project are being curtailed until further program revenue is received. He
�also reported that staff has been reviewing year-end projections and anticipate a balanced
budget. A motion to accept the finance report passed unanimously.

Nominating Committee Report: Sr. M. Kostielney presented Association Trustee
nominations for the class of 2001 to the board: E. Slews, B. Boone, N. C. Anderson, K.
Rossow, D. Silk, D. Price, M. Bassis. She also presented the nomination of M. Germano to
the class of 2000. The board unanimously approved the nominated Association Trustees. Sr.
M. Kostielney presented nominations for At-Large Trustees for the class of 2001: M. Allen,
C. Bloodworth, M. Engler, W. Liebold, A. Petersen, J. Taylor and M. Wilson. The board
unanimously approved the At-Large Trustees. S. Singh reported on the nominating
committee's discussion of a younger person (age 18-25) serving on the MNA board. The
MNA board approved a youth representative serving as a voting member of the board. The
nominating committee was charged to make recommendation of a youth trustee candidate at
a later meeting.
7. Audit Committee Report: D. Seaman presented MNA's June 30, 1997 audit report. The
audit was prepared in accordance with general accounting standards. He stated that the yearend unrestricted cash/equivalent was a -37,795 as a result of a time-management matter and
borrowing from unrestricted funds. MNA has solid permanent restricted funds. D. Seaman
reported that the committee recommended the audit be completed in the fall and included as
part of the fall or winter board meeting. A motion to accept the audit report passed
unanimously.
8. Volunteer Centers of Michigan Report: R. Schultheiss reviewed VCM's activities for
1997-98. She updated the board on plans for the Volunteerism SuperConference on May 4
and 5 at the Lansing Center and thanked Trustee M. Tate for serving as the conference
committee chairperson. R. Schultheiss updated the board on the Romney mini-grant award
process and VCM Capacity Building grants. She also reported on the VCMAmeriCorps
program. The new AmeriCorps grant started in January of 1998. To date the program has
15 part-time and 23 full-time members throughout the state.
K. Rossow reported that the Points of Light Foundation will activate a national "1-800VOLUNTEER" toll free number in April. This service will connect callers to their local
volunteer center to learn about volunteer opportunities. VCM will receive all calls for areas
in Michigan that do not have a volunteer center. A motion to accept the report passed
unanimously.
9. Michigan Campus Compact Report: A. Stone reported on MCC's activities. He noted that
MCC's membership had increased to 27 higher education institutions. He commented on
the MCC Venture Grant review process and MCC's work with the Fetzer Grant. MCC
hosted a successful Faculty Institute in November and is preparing for its annual student
recognition ceremony on March 28th. A motion to accept the report passed unanimously.
10. Nonprofit Outreach Report: A. Hegarty thanked the board for the opportunity to serve as a
member of the MNA staff for the past five years. She referenced the Russell G. Mawby
Award nomination form included in the board packet and encouraged nominations. The
�annual award sponsored by MNA and the Council of Michigan Foundations will be
presented at the Governor's Service Awards Dinner on May 4th at the Lansing Center in
conjunction with the Volunteerism SuperConference. A. Hegarty reported that the Blue
Cross Blue Shield partnership with the Michigan League for Human Services is working well
and attracting new members. Also, MNA will present a series of regional trainings dealing
with accounting and legal issues in late March and April. The MNA website is near
completion and will be accessible within the next two weeks. A motion to accept the report
passed unanimously.
11. Public Policy Report: S Singh reported on the March 6, 1998 MNA Public Policy
Committee meeting. The committee reviewed House Bill 5568, a bill to amend Michigan's
Charitable Solicitation Act. The committee recommended that MNA oppose House Bill
5568 due to new fees for nonproflts included in the Bill that do not provide any measures for
public information. The MNA Board unanimously supported the spirit of the public policy's
position D Seaman presented a paper prepared by Public Sector Consultants that reviews
nonprofit conversions. The board discussed this issue and requested that this be an agenda
item at their June 16, 1998 meeting.
M. Soper commented on the Michigan Public Policy Initiative's progress. The advisory
committee met in early March. Michigan In Brief should be available in print at the June 16,
1998 meeting.

This was my first SuperConference, I enjoyed it very much and learned a lot.
I really liked the days you chose, Monday and Tuesday , it made it much easier for my family, and I
liked being able to register on Sunday evening.
More detailed list of evening activities with a map of locations would be nice.
Possible "Hosts" that could help people organize trips to restaurants, museums, theatres, etc.
Allow a moment of silence before lunch.
As a youth volunteer and program coordinator I would have geared more topics for students to attend.
Either more time or less participants on panels at workshops.
Not enough issues/workshops pertaining to seniors. Seniors started this volunteerism not the youth,
does the planning board of this conference know that?
The excellent workshops were crowded and should have been offered a second time.
Sessions were very basic, not for professionals, only for volunteers. I hope to send staff next year but
will only if more advanced workshops dealing with training, recruiting, and supporting of volunteers
are held.
Shorten the lunch period for more or longer sessions and add cities to nametags.
A great chance for communities to collaborate efforts.
There is no place to comment on the food and facilities. The main hall was very cold and many of the
small room were quite warm. The salads were wilted and the hot topics for all four sessions were
completely packed and could have used much larger rooms.
Time and length of sessions was good. Nothing went too long or too short. Sessions were great, very
informative. Geared more towards the administrative/director side of the field.
More sessions fore beginners was needed, like successful projects.
Wanted to see more youth in the audience.
I felt the keynote speakers were fantastic and inspirational for my work and personal life. The
presenters were the best I have encountered in all of the many conferences I have attended. GREAT
JOB
I met people from a variety of backgrounds and found the conference as a positive, uplifting
experience.
Excellent organization job by Mr. Tate - some of the best networking I have experienced. This event
was "electric" in intensity and depth.
Would have been helpful to not schedule sessions as recruitment and recognition (sessions) at the
same time.
This was refreshing, informative & inspiring! Thanks to all responsible for this event. I wish all Corps
members could have made it!
Get some people from the UP on your planning committee.
Program was great - brochure was user friendly.
The mix of schools, nonprofits and businesses was excellent.
Well organized planned & executed. Mike Tate was excellent.
The agenda contained very limited learning opportunities for educators. This was a frequent comment
I heard.
MI can greatly benefit from more conferences like this. I am leaving with a new outlook at the impact
one person can have on a community.
The variety was great-I have never been to a conference that allowed so many different need and
communities to learn so much and work together so well. It really helped me realize that every
community has problems and needs volunteers working on them.

In April, a seventeen-member team of peer reviewers completed the 1998 George W. Romney Fund
Mini-Grant allocation process. They reviewed 34 proposals, totaling over $75 ,000 in requests, that were
competing for $25 ,000 in available funding. After a great deal of thought and discussion, the following
eleven organizations were awarded grants:

+ Garfield Park Neighborhood Association (Grand Rapids)
+ Kent County Literacy Council
+ Literacy Council of Midland County, Inc.
+ Literacy Volunteers of America - Sanilac Council
+ Michigan's Children (Lansing)
+ Michigan Literacy, Inc. (Okemos)
+ St. Vincent and Sarah Fisher Center (Farmington Hills)
+ South East End Neighborhood Association (Grand Rapids)
+ U.P. Children 's Museum (Marquette)
+ Volunteer Muskegon!
Local volunteer centers are making excellent progress on their Romney Endowment Fund efforts, as well.
To date, ten volunteer centers have reached their full $25 ,000 match. Eleven others are in various stages
.of their fundraising process. The ten volunteer centers who have reached their full match are:

We are pleased to announce the Volunteer Centers of Michigan 's participation in the Points of Light
Foundation' s 1-800-VOLUNTEER. When an interested volunteer calls 1-800-VOLUNTEER, they will
�be asked to input their ZIP Code and will then be connected immediately to their local volunteer center.
If the caller is not currently served by a local volunteer center, they will be connected to Volunteer
Centers ofMichigan (VCM). VCM will send the caller a volunteer guide, with a variety of suggestions
for becoming involved in the community. The volunteer guide is being developed in partnership with the
Michigan Community Service Commission and will be available June 30, 1998. Although 1-800VOLUNTEER is a national initiative, Michigan is the only state in the country that will have universal
coverage, providing a critical point of connection for all Michigan volunteers!

VCM held its annual officer elections at their June 4-5, 1998 retreat. New officers will serve July 1, 1998
through June 30, 1999. VCM's 1998-99 Executive Committee officers are:

The National Council ofVolunteer Centers (NCVC) is a 12 member advisory council to the Points of
Light Foundation. Nine representatives are elected for a three year term to represent their constituents on
a national level, while three are appointed nationally. These representatives speak for other Points of
Light Foundation member Volunteer Centers to nonprofit organization leaders, associations and other
councils. The chair ofNCVC is a Board member of The Points of Light Foundation. Kathy Rossow,
VCM member and director of the Southwestern Michigan Volunteer Center has just completed her term
of service with NCVC, where she served as chair during 1997-98 . Aaron Cantrell, director of the
Kalamazoo Volunteer Center, was elected in May 1998 to a three-year position representing our region.
We are proud to have this continued representation from Michigan!

The 1998 Volunteerism SuperConference was held May 4-5 at the Lansing Center in Lansing, Michigan.
Over 1,400 statewide participants attended the t\vo-day event, featuring keynote speakers General Colin
Powell, Marcia Bullard, Dr. John Kretzmann and David Sawyer. The conference went extremely well (as
is reflected in the attached evaluation summary), a pinnacle of volunteer and staff coordination among an
expansive statewide collaboration. Our special thanks to Dr. Michael Tate, 1998 Volunteerism
SuperConference Chair, and Jenni Holsman, Conference Coordinator, for their outstanding efforts. We
will begin planning for SuperConference 2000 in September of this year.

In May 1998, the official integration of MA VA (Michigan Association of Volunteer Administrators) as a
program ofMNA was completed. In December 1997, the MNA Board ofTrustees approved the
partnership with the statewide association, pending receipt of an acceptable audit ofMAVA's financial
records. All paperwork has been submitted to MNA, and their funds have been transferred into the MNA
account. We are currently conducting a MAVA membership drive, and will be meeting with the MA VA
Advisory Committee in late June to plan strategically for 1998-99.

The 1998-99 MNA Board meeting schedule has been set Please mark

The meetings will be held at the University Club in Lansing from 10:00
a.m. to noon. In an effort to allow for more networking with your fellow
trustees, an informal lunch will follow each meeting from noon to 1:00
p.m.
Board Member Profile Form
Enclosed is a board member profile. This information will allow us to
improve our communication with all trustees. Please complete this form
and return it along with your bio to the MNA office by July 17, 1998.
Board Member Committee Assignments
Within the next month we will be meeting to review the MNA committee
structure and assign each trustee to a committee. Please indicate your
committee interests on the board member profile form. We will notify
you of the 1998-99 committee assignments in August
MNA Staff Updates
Enclosed is a copy of MNA's new staff structure approved by the MNA
Executive Committee at their June meeting. Two new positions will be
added to the MNA 1 ) a nonprofit outreach manager and 2.) a business

Michigan Public Policy Initiative
The Michigan Public Policy Initiative is making great strides. On
Tuesday, July 14, 1998, the MPPI Advisory Committee will host a press
briefing to introduce Michigan In Brief, 1998-99 to the media. Copies of
Michigan In Brief were distributed to each trustee at the June 16, 1998
meeting. (For those trustees not at the meeting, copies will be mailed to
you.) All trustees will receive the CD-ROM version of this publication in
the mail Also, take a minute to visit the web site www.michiganinbrief.org to
view this publication.
We look forward to seeing you at the board meeting on September 15th. If

SUBJECT:
MNA Board of Trustees Meeting - September 15, 1998
This memorandum is to advise you of the next Michigan Nonprofit
Association (MNA) Board of Trustees meeting and update you on recent
activities.
Board Meeting
The MNA Board will meet on Tuesday, September 15, 1998 from
10:00 a.m. - noon at the University Club in Lansing. In an effort to allow
for more networking with your fellow trustees, an informal lunch will
follow the meeting from noon to 1:00 p.m.
Please complete and return the enclosed response form by mail or fax to
the MNA office by September 4, 1998. Materials will be sent to your
office prior to the meeting.
Executive Committee Meeting
Members of the MNA executive committee will meet prior to the MNA
Board of Trustees meeting on September 15 from 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.
at the University Club. Please indicate your attendance on the enclosed
response form and return it by fax or mail to the MNA office by
September 1, 1998. An executive committee meeting agenda will be
included with your board meeting materials.
MNA Committee Assignments
Many thanks to all trustees for returning your board member profile forms
to the MNA office. Enclosed is a list of the 1998-99 MNA committee
assignments. A committee meeting calendar will be distributed at the
Board meeting.
MNA Staff Updates
Lisa McGettigan Chamber, director of Michigan Campus Compact gave
birth to a seven pound baby boy, Kody McGraw Chambers, on July 16,

1998. Robin Lynn Schultheiss, director ofthe Volunteer Centers of
Michigan gave birth to a nine pound baby girl , Hannah Jane Schulteiss on
July31 , 1998.
Lisa has decided to resign her position as director of MCC, effective
August 27, 1998, to be a full-time mother. During this time of transition
for MCC, Jenni Holsman of the MNA staff will serve as interim MCC
director. Robin Lynn plans to return to work in mid-September.
We are pleased to report that Precios Johnson joined the MNA staff on
August 17, 1998 as manager of nonprofit outreach. She will assist
Director ofNonprofit Outreach Winnie Hendrickson in handling
membership services.
Please call the MNA office if you have any questions . We look forward to
seeing you on September 15th.

Many thanks to all who attended the September 15, 1998 board meeting
for their valuable thoughts and suggestions. This memo is in follow-up to
our meeting.
MNA Committee Meetings:
The MNA staff is working to establish a committee meeting calendar for
the year. We need your input. Please complete the enclosed committee
meeting response form and return it to the MNA office by September 25,
1998. We will send you a copy of the confirmed meeting calendar after all
replies have been received.

The meetings will be held at the University Club in Lansing from 10:00

Enclosed is a board member profile. This information will allow us to
improve our communication with all trustees. Please complete this form
and return it along with your bio to the MNA office by July 17, 1998.

Within the next month we will be meeting to review the MNA committee
structure and assign each trustee to a committee. Please indicate your
committee interests on the board member profile form. We will notify
you of the 1998-99 committee assignments in August.

MNA Staff Updates
Enclosed is a copy of MNA's new staff structure approved by the MNA
Executive Committee at their June meeting. Two new positions will be
added to the MNA 1.) a nonprofit outreach manager and 2.) a business
manager. If you have any questions regarding these positions or know of
talented candidates, please call Sam at 517-353-5038.
Michigan Public Policy Initiative
The Michigan Public Policy Initiative is making great strides On
Tuesday, July 14, 1998, the MPPI Advisory Committee will host a press
briefing to introduce Michigan In Brief, 1998-99 to the media. Copies of
Michigan In Brief were distributed to each trustee at the June 16, 1998
meeting. (For those trustees not at the meeting, copies will be mailed to
you.) All trustees will receive the CD-ROM version of this publication in
the mail. Also, take a minute to visit the web site www.michiganinbrief.org to
view this publication.
We look forward to seeing you at the board meeting on September 15th. If
you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Sam

Chair's Report
Trustee Recognition
We have three special trustees that I would like to recognize today that have truly made a
difference for MNA.
First, I want to take a moment to extend a special thank you to Dottie Johnson for her
dedication to MNA over the years. Dottie was an instrumental leader in the development
of MNA. She was also the visionary behind the Grantmakers/Grantseekers Conference which will celebrate its 10th anniversary next spring. Her ideas have contributed greatly
to where MNA is today. Dottie, your presence at our meetings will be greatly missed. I
want to present this gift to you as a token of our appreciation for your outstanding
commitment to MNA.
Second, although he could not be here today, I want to recognize our Chair-elect,
Michael Tate. Mike is leaving Michigan to serve as Director of Extension at Washington
State University. Mike has served on the MNA Board since 1994. I know that our loss is
truly a gain for the Washington nonprofit sector. We wish him much success in his new
position.
And finally, Richard Cole. Rick has served as the MNA Chair since 1995 - and what a
fantastic job he has done. It has truly been a privilege to serve on this board and see him
in action. He has made our service as trustees a truly rewarding experience. Under
Rick's leadership, MNA has matured: The Michigan Nonprofit Forum became the
Michigan Nonprofit Association, MNA moved from a small nonprofit to an organization
with a $1.4 million budget and eleven full-time staff members, MNA's membership and
member services have increased dramatically. MNA is well positioned to be an effective
voice for all nonprofit s.
I consider it a great honor to accept the chairmanship from Rick.
I was able to present Rick with a gift at our meeting last night - and Sam will present
Mike's gift at a reception for him next week.
Other Business
A calendar of future board meetings will be established and mailed to all trustees within
the next few weeks.

REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL
"The magnitude of our social problems will require that all citizens and institutions make a
commitment to volunteering as a way of life and as a primary opportunity to create needed
change."

Background Information
George Romney was a man of strong belief, whose values were the focal point of his daily life. He had a passion for
community, which made him a powerful leader and citizen. George Romney cherished his role as a volunteer and was
recognized nationally as a leader in the volunteerism movement. He founded the National Volunteer Center, served as a
founding trustee of the Points of Light Foundation and the Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA), and spearheaded the
development of a number of volunteer centers in Michigan. Romney was a true believer when he declared, "the most
powerful problem-solving force on earth is the organized, voluntary cooperation of a free people."
To honor George Romney and to keep his vision of volunteerism alive, the Volunteer Centers of Michigan (VCM) and the
lichigan Nonprofit Association established the George W. Romney Fund for Volunteerism in Michigan in 1996. This
endowment fund will continue Romney's dream by:
• building local infrastructure through the establishment of local volunteer center endowment funds,
• providing mini-grants to support innovative volunteer projects and programs across the state,
• supporting an annual public relations campaign to spur participation in volunteer programs.
The Michigan Nonprofit Association is now accepting applications for the 1998-99 George W. Romney Fund for
Volunteerism in Michigan Mini-grants. Recipients of these grants will be chosen through a competitive, statewide
process by a team of peer reviewers. The Romney Fund will distribute a minimum of $25,000 in this cycle, with
individual awards not to exceed $7,500.
Sponsoring Organizations
Volunteer Centers of Michigan was created to provide a voice for the growing number of volunteer centers in the state
of Michigan. VCM's mission is to strengthen existing volunteer centers, provide leadership in developing new volunteer
centers, and promote volunteerism statewide.
The Michigan Nonprofit Association's mission is to promote the awareness and effectiveness of Michigan's nonprofit
sector and to advance the cause of volunteerism and philanthropy in the state. MNA achieves this mission by:
• convening nonprofit leaders, as well as the leadership of government and the private sectors, to increase the
understanding of the nonprofit sector, confront common issues and concerns, and promote collaboration.
• encouraging voluntary giving and service.
• disseminating information important to defining the sector, its scope, and values.
• taking an active role in public policy that affects the nonprofit sector.
• providing programs and services that enhance the sector by strengthening organizational capacities.

Eligibility
All current dues-paying members of MNA and its affiliate organizations, Michigan Association of Volunteer
Administrators (MAVA), Michigan Campus Compact (MCC), and Volunteer Centers of Michigan (VCM), are invited to
apply.
Project Funding
The Romney Fund will provide grants ranging from $2,500 to $7,500. The duration of all grants shall be no more than
one year beginning March 1, 1999 and ending February 28, 2000.
Proposal Submission Deadline
The original proposal, signed application form, and five copies must be received in the MNA office no later than 5:00
p.m. on December 11, 1998. Proposals will not be accepted via fax or email.
Evaluation Criteria
Proposals will be reviewed and evaluated based upon the following criteria:
• statement of need.
• measurable goals and objectives which meet the defined need.
• innovative ideas and methods utilizing volunteers in the project or program.
• collaboration with other organizations, particularly with similar existing programs.
• a solid evaluation component.
• feasibility and cost effectiveness of the project or program.
• evidence of financial and programmatic sustainability beyond the funding provided by the grant.
With the assistance of MNA and VCM staff, a panel of external peer reviewers will consider all proposals that meet the
established criteria. Applicants may be asked to provide clarification or additional information through telephone
interviews and/or written responses. Final selection and notification will be made by this panel via mail no later than
March 15, 1999. Telephone calls will not be accepted regarding the status of your proposal.
