Feedback from students and mentors was overwhelmingly positive. A fourth class of Emerging Leaders is being recruited for classes to begin August 26. This series will include a new segment on program evaluation. I ./ The first class of Foundations of Excellence is scheduled to begin August 30. This will be a comprehensive preparation and planning experience for executive directors with less than three years experience. Over nine months, participants will experience six two-day seminars focused on organizational excellence; will conduct an organizational assessment in partnership with board leadership; and will be engaged in peer learning and dialogue related to sector issues through Learning Circle participation. The Principles and Practices for Nonprofit Excellence in Michigan is currently available in a draft form, with public comment being taken through July 15 through MNA's web site. Significant feedback has been received through the MSO network and the patiicipants at Volunteerism SuperConference 2004. The Principles and Practices for Mission Achievement Assessment Tool (f01merly Hallmarks for Mission Achievement) has been refined for consistency with the Principles and Practices for Nonprofit Excellence, and will be field tested this summer. Final versions of these documents and the Basic Infrastructure Checklist will be available for public distribution in September 2004. Volunteerism SuperConference 2004 The planning committee for Volunteerism SuperConference 2004 was chaired by Chris Nelson, Michigan Association of United Ways. The conference was held May 24 and 25 in Grand Rapids under the theme Strengthening Communities through Service. The goal was to attract at least 600 patiicipants. Attendance fell slightly below that with at least 560 individuals participating in two days of learning, networking and renewal. Evaluations from participants were overwhelmingly positive with highest marks going to customer service provided by staff and volunteers, talks by Arianna Huffington and Susan Ellis, and the variety of learning provided by more than 50 workshops. Several Management Support Organizations throughout the state assisted with the project by encouraging organizations to participate in the survey. The Jobnson Center for Philanthropy at Grand Valley State University collected data and prepared the results. The new edition includes a greater number of participating organizations from more counties and includes an increase in employment positions. The survey is available for purchase online in the MNA bookstore. The latest edition of Michigan Giving and Volunteering has been released. The study highlights key findings from a 2003 survey of Michigan residents on their levels of giving and volunteering. Information on the scope of foundation giving and details on state and national community service programs are also included. The publication is available on the MNA Web site and free printed copies can be obtained by calling the MNAoffice. !Membership Update Membership numbers declined slightly this past quarter. The Volunteerism SuperConference did not attract as many new members as in previous years and economic conditions have impacted renewal rates as well. The new fiscal year will begin with a strong focus on membership recruitment and retention. New staff member Heather Travis will aid this effot1 by devoting part of her time to membership and nonprofit outreach. \MNA WebSite The MNA Web site will soon have a new look with many new features. We anticipate the launch of the new site to be later this month. Welcome and Call to Order The meeting was called to order by chair, E. Blews, at 12:00 p.m. 2. Approval of the Minutes of December 16,2004 A motion to approve the minutes of the December 16, 2003 meeting was made by C. Bloodworth and seconded by K. Hall. Motion carried. 3. Chair's Rep01t E. Blews thanked all of the board members present for taking time out of their busy schedules to attend an all-day retreat. E. Blews noted that one of the issues for today is the ongoing discussion and deliberation of the Board about the state budget structural deficit and the need for revenue restoration and revenue enhancement. The MNA Public Policy and Executive Committee had been delegated the duty to finalize the details. E. Blews reminded the Board that three position statements were already adopted by the Board and the MNA Executive Committee adopted the following four position statements and are recommending them to the Board for adoption as follows: I. The Michigan Nonprofit Association supports an increase in the State cigarette tax. 2. The Michigan Nonprofit Association supports an increase in the mark-up applied to liquor sales. 3. The Michigan Nonprofit Association supports modernizing the State Sales and Use �Sr. Kostielney further reported that the Nominating Committee recommends that the MNA Board of Trustees approve the designations of the following Association Trustees to the MNA Board of Trustees Class of2007: N. Charles Anderson, Council of Michigan Urban Leagues E. Blews, Jr., Association of Independent Colleges & Universities of Michigan T. Mathieu, Michigan Community Action Agency Association D. Mikula, Michigan Association of Community Arts Agencies D. Price, Michigan Association of Rehabilitation Organizations S. Herman, Michigan Jewish Conference A motion to approve nominations of the above individuals as Association Trustees to the MNA Board of Trustees Class of 2007 was made by Sr. Kostielney and seconded by A. This report provides a summary of our accomplishments and clear illustrations of the impact of our partners. It also will explain the model we have to help Michigan's volunteers become engaged in communities. Connecting Where We Live, Work and Learn Our Michigan communities are at a crossroad. There are tremendous challenges to address including strengthening and diversifying our economy, educating and nurturing our children, empowering and caring for the needy, and increasing the acts of civility in our civil society. There are also equally expanding opportunities including a growing nonprofit sector, steady rates of volunteering and giving, state and national leaders calling for increased civic engagement, a population surge of baby boomers whose passions can be tapped, and a growing urge among youth to make a difference and get involved. Our crossroad gives us the chance to turn our opportunities toward addressing our challenges. That is what the ConnectMichigan Alliance is all about. We are working to match challenges with opportunities by building the service and volunteering organizations \e capacity of local organizations where we live, work and learn. Our public/ private alliance reaches out to nonprofits, education institutions, government and for-profits to help communities manage their needs through volunteerism. Throughout this report you will note the importance we place on ensuring that Michigan has a strong local infrastructure to channel passions toward opportunities. You will also find powerful evidence of how our investments change lives and build stronger communities. He believed that the magnitude of our social problems "...require that all citizens and institutions make a commitment to volunteering as a way of life..." Michigan's volunteer community took his words to heart. CMA was established in June 2000 after Michigan's Governor and Legislature provided a $10 fc^ million challenge grant to build a ConnectMichigan Alliance Endowment. VCM focuses on three primary areas: strengthening existing Volunteer Centers, providing leadership in developing new centers and promoting volunteerism statewide. The public sector must be a full partner with the private sector in ensuring that service and civic engagement are channeled and harnessed to help meet the state's tremendous challenges. Serve Michigan engaged a broad coalition of partners to demonstrate the concrete benefits of volunteerism to elected officials and to maintain or increase public and private funding for volunteer efforts and programs. The impact of its work in 2005 included a successful broad-based campaign of 283 coalition partners which helped restore $980,000 in state funding to the Michigan Community Service Commission. This enabled Michigan to leverage $6.8 million in federal funding and 900,000 hours of volunteer service. AmeriCorps*VISTA A Quiet but Expert Connection Syreeta Jemison didn't feel she had much to offer at first. After all, she was just a recent college graduate. But...she had learned the value of community service at the U of M, so she became an MCC AmeriCorps*VISTA volunteer. She started facilitating Family Literacy workshops at Peter Vetal Elementary School in Detroit and soon realized the parents saw her as an ally in helping their children read. Syreeta provides parents with materials to use in literacy lessons at home. This quiet young woman is now their literacy expert. This MCC program has generated impressive human and financial resources to enable college students to address the needs of children in low-income communities. MCC VISTA volunteers have made a tremendous impact while gaining valuable service-learning Wing proiects experience outside the classroom. Consider that in just one year, MCC VISTAs have: Recruited 3,250 college students as new volunteers. Performed nearly 100,000 hours of volunteer service, valued at more than $1.7 million. Michigan's Promise Connecting to the Best Michigan can be a great place to be a kid. Our state boasts 28 Communities of Promise and two were 2005 winners of a first-ever national contest to showcase the "100 Best Communities for Young People." Alger/Marquette Counties and Jackson County received the "100 Best" honor out of 700+ communities judged. Courtney Drake exemplifies why Jackson won. This high school senior has volunteered at Cascades Humane Society for nearly four years...and getting there isn't easy. She relies on a wheelchair for transportation and her mother for rides. Courtney's spirit earned her the Volunteer Superstar Award from the Jackson County Nonprofit Support Center. We believe that our children are resources and leaders a force for good. They are part of the solution, not the problem. Michigan's Promise is the state's response to the national America's Promise effort, founded by General Colin L Powell. It is an on-going campaign to ensure that our f ^ cI children have access to the Five Promises: Caring Adults, Safe Places, Healthy Start & Future, Marketable Skills, and Opportunities to Serve. Research shows that if these five promises are consistently fulfilled, they can significantly advance the health and well-being of the next generation. This increases the chances of youth becoming successful adults. �Connecting Through Finan We owe a debt of gratitude to the 227 organizations and individuals who rose to the challenge and built this endowed, long-term support mechanism for Michigan volunteers. As good stewards of the CMA Endowment, our staff works tirelessly to use our precious financial and human resources responsibly and innovatively, with a balanced blend of vision and practicality. We are pleased to report that 86% of our revenues went to missionrelated programs, direct support of our state and community partners and organizational reserves. In addition, 51% of all revenues continue to be leveraged from sources outside the Endowment. This diverse revenue approach enables us to seek new resources and deliver critical products, innovative programming and new services while maintaining our basic infrastructure including staff, space and vital contracted services for both CMA and its partners. While CMA's Endowment may provide a limited level of stability, our state's needs continue to mount. Local nonprofits and community-based organizations need our help. We invite others to become financial contributors to the long-term health of Michigan's vibrant and robust volunteer community by supporting CMA. As a reminder, the MNA financial statements have been modified to reflect the new laws governing nonprofit financial reporting. STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL POSITION The information below is the balance as January 31, 2005 for the Statement of Financial Position. Assets Pettv Cash, Checking and Money Market Investment Account: +68,242. Reconciled balances as ofJanuary 31,2005. Section 125 Checking Account: + 391. Flexible Spending Account for dependent/childcare and un-reimbursed medical expenses. Reconciled balance as of January 31, 2005. Healthier Plan Checking Account: +4,130. Healthier Plan Account for un-reimbursed medical related expenses for the staff who participate in the medical insurance benefit plan. Reconciled balance as ofJanuary 31,2005. Accounts Receivable- Conference Registration: + 105. Amount billed to organizations and individuals for registration fees to attend the Volunteerism SuperConference 2004 event. Remittance is anticipated to occur within the next month. Accounts Receivable- Conference Bookstore: +20. Amount billed to organizations and individuals for book sales at the Volunteerism SuperConference 2004 bookstore. Remittance is anticipated to occur with the next month. Accounts Receivable- CMA: +33,554. Amount billed to ConnectMichigan Alliance for expenditures which includes salaries, fringe benefit costs and operational costs. Remittance is anticipated to occur in February of2005. Accounts Receivable- MNA Dues: +5,155. Amount billed for MNA membership renewals for December of2004 and January of2005. Remittance is anticipated to occur within the next month. Accounts Receivable- C.S. Molt Foundation- MNLI: +40,000. A grant was awarded on May 1, 2004 in the amount of $75,000 from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation for the Leadership Institute Project. This grant will be paid in two increments. The first payment was remitted in May of2004. The remaining payment is anticipated to occur in May of2005. 03 07 OS03 07 05 Financer~013IOSBoarddoc ( �Accounts Receivable- W. K. Kellogg Foundation: + 150,000. A grant was awarded on September I, 2004 in the amount of$150,000 from theW. K. Kellogg Foundation for the MNA Strategic Fund. Remittance is anticipated to occur during the month of March 2005. Accounts Receivable- Classified Ads: +8,259. Amount billed to organizations for advertising of positions and etc. in our MNA Websites and Links Newsletter. Remittance is anticipated to occur within the next few months. Accounts Receivable- Sponsors: +500. Amount billed for the conference sponsors. Remittance is anticipated to occur within the next month. Prepaid Accounts: +25,147. Prepaid insurance, postage, copier, conference and training deposits that will be expensed as the expenditures occur. Liabilities and Net Assets Due for Copy Overage: +448. This represents an overage owed to Hasselbring Clark for our six month copier maintenance contract. The over/under costs of the copier maintenance contract is billed every February and July. Accounts Payable: + 11,780. This balance consists of operational expenditures to be remitted in November of2004. The liability consists of some contract payments and other general operational expenditures. Other current liabilities: + 31,855. The accrued vacation, unemployment tax liability, withholdings and sales tax payable are expensed as the expenditure occurs. Deferred Revenue - Training: +I ,500. This line item represents prepayment for the 2005 Distance Learning Agreement with Michigan Center for Rural Health that is to be allocated to revenue in July of2005. Unrestricted: +69,064. This account is the offset for the closeout of the Revenue over Expense account at fiscal year end. Temp. Restricted MNLI- C. S. Mott Grant: +35,346. The Charles Stewart Molt Foundation awarded a $75,000 two year grant in May of2004. The expenditures for the Michigan Nonprofit Leadership Institute programs are anticipated to occur throughout the fiscal year. Temp. Restricted- MNA Dues: +81,658. This balance is the unearned amount of member dues representing, for each member, I/ 12th of the annual dues payment. Temp. Restricted MPPI- Aspen Institute: +1,173. The Aspen Institute awarded a $31,775 grant in July of2002 and a $27,933 grant in July of2003 to support the Michigan Nonprofit Research Program. The remaining expenditures for the Michigan Nonprofit Research Program are anticipated to occur throughout the fiscal year. Revenue over Expenses: +143,762. This is the balance from the year to date revenue over expense statement. 03 07 0503 07 05 Finance report 013105Boarddoc 2 �STATEMENT OF ACTIVITIES The infmmation below is based on year to date (YTD) variance which is detailed in the second to the last column of the Statement of Activities. Revenue General Contributions: <256>. General, individual and strategic contributions are behind projections due to equal monthly budget allocations. Interest & Dividends: + 179. Interest and dividends are ahead of budget projections due to interest earned on the MNA Checking and Money Market Account funds held at Standard Federal Bank. Grants and Contracts- Strategic: <10,684>. These line items in total are behind budget projections due to pending grants and contracts. We anticipate these proposals to be awarded within the next few months. Restricted Grants- MNLI: <50,000>. This line item represents a budgeted grant award that was awarded in May of2004 from The Charles Stewart Molt Foundation in the amount of$75,000. This two year grant was awarded to support the Michigan Nonprofit Leadership Institute programs. Existing Grants- MNLI: +39,654. This line item is ahead of budget projections due to a grant award in May of 2004 that was budgeted in the Restricted Grants- MNLI. These funds were transferred from the Net Assets - Temporarily Restricted MNLI - C. S. Matt Foundation. All of the restricted foundation funds were transferred to cover budgeted expenditures. Restricted Grants- MPPI: <49, 170>. This line item is behind budget projections due to pending grants and contracts. This line item also represents grant awards from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation and The Aspen Institute. We anticipate the pending proposals to be awarded within the next few months. Existing Grants- MPPI: +18,190. This line item is ahead of budget projections due to equal monthly budget allocations of expenditures for Michigan Public Policy Initiative programs. Membership Dues: <21,232>. MNA memberships are behind budget projections due to equal monthly budget allocations with the anticipation of an increase in membership applications. Consulting: <43,170>. This line item is behind budget projections due to equal monthly budget allocations. MNA continues to seek consulting opportunities. Program Fees: <31,566>. This line item is behind budget projections due to scheduling changes and slow remittance of budgeted training seminars for the Michigan Nonprofit Leadership programs. This line item represents an unbudgeted benefit savings program to assist in offsetting the rising cost of healthcare insurance premiums. Expenses (negative expense items reflect a positive impact on the bottom line.) Salaries and Benefits: <15,346>. These line items represent savings due to equal monthly budget allocations. Liabilitv Insurance: <166>. This line item represents budget savings due to equal monthly budget allocations with anticipation of an increase in our D&O Insurance coverage cost. Contract Services: <29,556>. This line item is under budget projections due to scheduled changes in the leadership and training seminar consultant contracts for Michigan Nonprofit Leadership Institute (MNLI) and the Training and Technical Assistance programs. These programs are anticipated to occur throughout the fiscal year. Office Expenses: <32,391>. This line item is under budget due to savings in several expense categories with the anticipation of additional funding sources. The expenditures are anticipated to occur as funding becomes available. Overall, MNA staff has searched for alternate ways to keep expenditures low which results in an overall savings. Printing I Publications: <27,388>. This line item is under budget due to expenditures anticipated for the printing of the MNLI, NPO and MPPI publications and brochures. Expenditures are budgeted to occur throughout the fiscal year. Meeting Expenses: <16,256>. This line item is under budget due to savings in several expense categories that are anticipated to occur throughout the fiscal year. The largest of the savings is for anticipated costs of the MNLI programs. Travel Expenses: <15,019>. Features include: • a June 13 preconference day co-sponsored by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Greater Detroit Chapter • Outstanding keynote speakers: long-time White House bureau chief Helen Thomas; Council on Foundations chair Emmett Carson; and author Paul Light. • over 40 foundation representatives for roundtable discussions • 47 workshops on nonprofit management, fund development, volunteer administration, advocacy, national service programs, communications and other important topics • resource exhibits, book store and cyber cafe' • networking, networking, networking ... Regional Capacity Building Planning is underway for capacity building events in communities around the state. These events will coordinate the efforts of a number of MNA initiatives, including promoting grass roots advocacy, rolling out the Pdnciples and Practices for Nonprofit Excellence, promoting regional collaborations and expanding MNA membership out-state. A one-day nonprofit conference is planned for the Upper Peninsula in the fall, in cooperaiion with the Great Lakes Center for Youth Development. Regional one day events to being together local capacity building resources while rolling out the Principles and Practices for Nonprofit Excellence are planned for at least four communities. Advocacy workshops are scheduled for four communities. Over please �Local Learning Series A full schedule of workshops is scheduled for spring, again cosponsored by the Capital Region , 1 Community Foundation and the Capital Area United Way. As usual, fund development workshops are expected to draw the largest audiences. Indiana University Fund Raising School Indiana University Fund Raising School classes are moving to the University of Michigan-Dearborn training facility. Classes for 2005 will include Principles and Techniques, Planned Giving, Major Gifts, and Grant Writing. A new relationship with the regional AFP chapter should help with marketing. Michigan MSO Network The Michigan MSO Network has added a number of new members: New Detroit; Michigan Association of Community Arts Agencies; Nonprofit Facilities Center; Great Lakes Nonprofit Institute and Great Lakes Center for Youth Development. Greater emphasis will be placed on member recruitment and retention with the addition of another staff person. Heather Travis, the former receptionist for MNNCMA, accepted the position of Assistant Manager of Member Services and moved into the position late in February. Heather's degree in marketing will bring the expertise necessary to help us reach our Strategic Plan goal of 1100 members by 2007. IMNA Website Several new sections will be developed for the MNA website this quarter, including areas for Management & Operations and Technology. The Management and Operations section will contain sub-sections for Collaboration, Evaluation, Facilities Management, Communication, Human Resources, Finances, and Management Support Organizations. IBenefits and Services Advertising discounts on public radio and public television will soon be among MNA member benefits. In a plan originating with WKAR in Lansing and extending to include other Michigan stations, nonprofit organizations will be able to receive savings on organizational marketing and the promotion of events. MNA believes that the audience of public radio and television will be most receptive and responsive to messages from the nonprofit sector. Welcome and Call to Order The meeting was called to order by Chair, D. Seaman at 9:20 a.m. He thanked everyone for attending the meeting and asked them to introduce themselves. He welcomed guest, David Ambrose, Independent Auditor, to the meeting. 2. Approval of the Minutes of September 21, 2004 A motion to approve the minutes of the September 21, 2004 meeting was made by D. Mikula and seconded by J, King. Motion carried. 3. Chair's Report D. Seaman reported that the graduation for the Fourth Class of Emerging Leaders would be held today. The graduates and their mentors were also invited to join the holiday luncheon with the MNA staff and Board of Trustees. Next, D. Seaman congratulated Chair Elect, Karla Hall, who recently was named Vice President, DTE Energy Foundation. A warm round of applause followed. 4. President's Report S. Singh reported that through the strong relationship with City Connect Detroit and United Way Community Services, MNA hopes to open an office in SE Michigan in 2005. He noted that about 50% of MNA's membership comes from SE Michigan and the goal is to add services to that area. S. Singh noted that initial conversations have been held with funders for an investment from the foundation field for a 3-5 year timeframe. �MNA has also begun conversations with organizations in the Marquette area. MNA has limited membership in the upper part of Michigan and would like to have a shared relationship with an organization in that area to provide additional services. In addition, S. Singh reported that a very successful event on capacity building was held in Detroit in partnership with MNRP, along with Nonprofit Enterprise at Work (NEW) and City Connect Detroit. Paul Connolly, TCC Group, (formerly The Conversation Company) was the guest speaker. The event was very well attended by a cross-section of researchers, practitioners and nonprofit organizations. It helped point out some of the gaps in SE Michigan coverage and helped illustrate the need for MNA's work and activities in SE Michigan. S. Singh reported that MNA's public policy group is very well connected on the national level with the Senate Finance Committee. A panel of nonprofit experts was recently convened by Independent Sector to provide input on oversight reform. The panel has met with the Senate Finance Committee and is expected to provide a report to the Finance Committee in early 2005. In addition, S. Singh indicated that the Finance Committee staff told panel members that legislation is expected shortly to address concerns regarding credit-counseling organizations, donor advised funds, car donations and tax shelters. Further information will be given during the Public Policy Committee Report. 5. Executive Committee Report A. Code of Ethics D. Seaman reported that as MNA was putting together the Principals and Practices for Nonprofit Excellence in Michigan, one of the best practices is having a Code of Ethics. The Executive Committee reviewed the Code of Ethics and wanted it to be a valuable tool for not only MNA, but also intended as a model that member organizations could draw from. (It was noted that many of MNA's organizations may already have a Code of Ethics in place). D. Seaman reviewed several areas of the document and noted that adherence to the law is the minimum standard of expected behavior. Nonprofit organizations must do more, however, than simply obey the law. We must embrace the highest standards of integrity. Transparency, openness and responsiveness to public concerns must be integral to nonprofits' behavior. S. Singh noted that this document would be used during orientation of new MNA Board of Trustees and would be part ofMNA's Employment Policies and Procedures. A motion was made to accept the Code of Ethics by J, King and seconded by E. Blews. Motion carried. 2 �B. MNA By-Laws Revision D. Seaman noted that The Michigan Ecumenical Forum has remained dormant since the untimely passing of their executive director, Candyce Williams. Since there is no indication that the organization will reconstitute itself, it is the recommendation of the MNA Executive Committee to remove the organization from the list of organizations that hold permanent seats on the MNA Board of Trustees at this time. If and when the organization reemerges as a functioning nonprofit organization, the MNA Board of Trustees could reconsider this action. A discussion followed and it was recommended that the Nominating Committee take a broader look at the MNA Board of Trustees structure before any action is taken. A motion was made by B. Liebold and seconded by B. Hill that the Nominating Committee review the structure of the Board of Trustees. Motion carried. Next, D. Seaman reported that in order to streamline the nomination and voting process for the MNA Board of Trustees, it was recommended that MNA add e-mail as a method to inform and accept nominations and ballots from the membership. If MNA does not have an active e-mail account for a member, a Call-for-Nomination form and ballot will be mailed to the member. A motion was made by M. Flanagan and seconded by A. Rosewarne that email be added as a way of contacting members and accepting nominations and ballots from MNA's membership. Motion carried. 6. Finance Committee Report P. Casale reviewed the Financial Statements that were discussed at the Finance Committee meeting December 8. She further reviewed the Financial Report Memorandum. A motion was made to accept the Financial Statements for month ending October 31, 2004, by D. Price and seconded by D. Caldwell. Motion carried. 7. Audit Committee Report P. Casale reported that the Audit Committee met December 13, 2004, and approved the audit as presented. She turned over the report to D. Ambrose, MNA's Independent Auditor. D. Ambrose reviewed the Independent Auditor's Report, for year ending June 30, 2004. He noted a letter to the Board of Trustees of MNA is included in the auditor's report, in which he indicated that he noted no matters involving the internal control stmcture and its operations that he would consider material weaknesses. D. Ambrose noted that MNA continues to work as a very efficient organization. D. Seaman thanked 3 �D. Ambrose for his comprehensive report. The MNA Board of Trustees noted that the entire MNA staff deserves to be commended for their dedicated work. A request was made that during the Audit report next year, the previous years figures be included for comparison. D. Ambrose said that he would be able to provide the total figures for each column. Next, D. Seaman asked the MNA Board of Trustees if anyone wanted to request an Executive session to discuss the Audit. D. Seaman noted that no such request was issued. A recommendation to accept the audit report for the year ending June 30, 2004, was made by D. Algra and seconded by R. Collier. Motion carried. 8. Public Policy Report R. Collier reported that Michigan is well represented on the Independent Sector's panel to advise the U.S. Senate Finance Committee on reform. Representing Michigan are Sam Singh, Michigan Nonprofit Association; William C. Richards, W.K. Kellogg Foundation; WilliamS. White, Charles Stewart Mott Foundation; and Dorothy Johnson, Council of Michigan Foundations. A national conference call will be held on Friday, December 17. The intent is to produce a preliminary report by February 2005 and a final report by June. Senator Grassley' s staff said in the near future the legislature expects to address concerns regarding credit-counseling organizations, donor advised funds and tax shelters. R. Collier added that on the Lansing side, the focus is on the structural deficit, along with streamlining state grants, changes to the sales tax exemption and revision of the Charitable Solicitation Act. He updated the trustees on the progress of several documents, including the Economic Benefits of the Michigan Nonprofit Sector, the Lobbying Handbook and the toolkit for organizations facing challenges to property tax exemptions. These documents are expected to be published in early 2005. E. Skene said that during the legislative session, a series of educational forums for legislative staff and policymakers are held to educate them on issues that impact the nonprofit sector. Upcoming topics are 2-1-1 initiative, environmental, arts issues, and the economic condition of the nonprofit sector. She noted that as soon as the tool kit for property tax exemption is prepared by the Michigan State University College of Law, training sessions will be held around the state. In addition, E. Skene updated the group on the Michigan E-grant Initiative- the state's efforts to streamline and simplify its granting process. Focus groups and a conference call will be held to review the request for proposals that the state has put together. 9. Fund Advancement Committee Report C. Bloodworth reported that the Michigan Nonprofit Association was one of the community organizations recognized by the DTE Energy Foundation at its Achieving Excellence Awards ceremony for promoting excellence and was awarded $100,000. 4 �Congratulations were given to everyone and everyone expressed their thanks to Karla Hall and the DTE Energy Foundation for this award. C. Bloodworth noted that the three areas of focus for the Fund Advancement Committee are: MNA's Strategic Fund, Michigan Public Policy Initiative (MPPI) and MNA conferences. She reviewed the programs and the potential sponsors for each program and asked the Board members to let her or D. Swenson know of any personal connections they may have to any of the potential funding source listed or any other organizations that may fund MNA. C. Bloodworth next drew attention to the Michigan Nonprofit Strategic Fund information and envelope. She noted that many of the Board members who are involved in funding know how nice it is to be able to report that there is 100% participation in the Strategic Fund by the Board members, and she thanked them for their contributions. 10. MNA Strategic Plan D. Swenson reported that the MNA 2004-07 Strategic Plan placed great emphasis on membership development and developing a marketing plan. He noted that with the help of two consultants, Toyin Moore, Williams Group, and Mike Van Buren, W. K. Kellogg Foundation, a marketing plan was developed. The main objective of the plan is to increase MNA's membership from 700 members to 1,200 members by 2007. The MNA Member Recruitment Campaign, "Just One!" includes a plan of action for marketing, recruitment and/or retention strategies. J. Harper said part of the marketing plan is to ask each MNA Board member to recruit one new MNA member by June 2005. The packet includes talking points, stories, a benefit chart, the current MNA membership roster, MNA membership brochures and MNA business cards. She noted that most MNA trustees sit on other nonprofit boards and could encourage th9se organizations to join MNA. In addition, another group to contact is professional, personal or social circles that are affiliated with nonprofits. J. Harper noted that a list of 100 specific organizations has been targeted for membership byMNA. 11. Leadership and Training Report J. Moore reminded everyone that the Michigan Nonprofit SuperConference will be held June 13, 14 and 15, 2005, at the Hyatt Regency- Dearborn. She asked M. Corbin to review the Michigan Nonprofit Capacity Building Research Symposium information. M. Corbin updated the tmstees on the symposium held at Wayne State University in Detroit. The symposium examined the trends in capacity building from both a local and national perspective and shared the recent research by Joanne Sobeck, Ph.D. regarding capacity-building efforts with southeastern Michigan nonprofit organizations. The symposium was very successful. 5 �12. Nonprofit Leadership Institute Report R. L. Grinnell reported that Class Four of Emerging Leaders will celebrate their graduation with the MNA Board of Trustees and staff today. She also noted that applications for Class Five are currently being accepted and that mentors will be recruited in early January. Applications for the Executive Leadership Fellows are due by January 17,2005, and will begin in March. R. L. Grinnell noted that she just received the final revisions from the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits on the Principles and Practices for Nonprofit Excellence in Michigan and she and S. Singh will review the document. A final document should be ready in late January. 13. ConnectMichigan Alliance Report A. Rosewarne said CMA had a wonderful retreat in October. A statement of purpose was written and adopted, which is, Building service and volunteering through organizations where we live, work and learn. The CMA Board of Trustees has broadened their meeting schedule to four meetings a year. S. Singh reported that 2005 Carter Partnership Award (CPA)/Michigan Campus Compact Fifteenth Anniversary Celebration will be held on June 18, 2005, at the Hyatt Regency in Dearborn, Michigan, where Mrs. Rosalynn Carter will present the award for Michigan. The award is named for President and Mrs. Carter as a tribute to their lifelong efforts to develop and support safe, healthy, and caring communities throughout the world. In public office and in their daily lives, they have consistently supported public improvement efforts based on cooperation, mutual learning, and shared responsibility. The Governor's Service Awards (GSA) dinner will also be held that evening. The Governor George Romney Lifetime Achievement Award and Russell G. Mawby Award for Philanthropy Maw by Award will also be given at the GSA dinner. 14. Emerging Leaders Graduation D. As a reminder, the MNA fmancial statements have been modified to reflect the new laws goveming nonprofit financial reporting. STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL POSITION The information below is the balance as April 30, 2005 for the Statement of Financial Position. Assets Petty Cash, Checking and Money Market Investment Account: +228,594. Reconciled balances as of April30, 2005. Section 125 Checking Account: +246. Flexible Spending Account for dependent/childcare and un-reimbursed medical expenses. Reconciled balance as of April30, 2005. Healthier Plan Checking Account: +9,869. Healthier Plan Account for un-reimbursed medical related expenses for the staff who participate in the medical insurance benefit plan. Reconciled balance as of April 30, 2005. Accounts Receivable- Conference Registration: +I 05. Amount billed to organizations and individuals for registration fees to attend the Volunteerism SuperConference 2004 event. Remittance is anticipated to occur within the next month. Accounts Receivable- Conference Bookstore: +20. Amount billed to organizations and individuals for book sales at the Volunteerism SuperConference 2004 bookstore. Remittance is anticipated to occur with the next month. Accounts Receivable - CMA: + 33,199. Amount billed to ConnectMichigan Alliance for expenditures which includes salaries, fringe benefit costs and operational costs. Remittance is anticipated to occur in June of2005. Accounts Receivable- MNA Dues: +6,200. Amount billed for MNA membership renewals for March and April of2005. Remittance is anticipated to occur within the next month. ) Accounts Receivable- C.S. Mott Foundation- MNLI: +40,000. A grant was awarded on May I, 2004 in the amount of$75,000 from the Charles Stewmt Mott Foundation for the Leadership Institute Project. This grant will be paid in two increments. Amount billed to organizations for advertising of positions and etc. in our MNA Websites and Links Newsletter. Remittance is anticipated to occur within the next few months. Accounts Receivable- Sponsors: +500. Amount billed for the conference sponsors. Remittance is anticipated to occur within the next month. Prepaid Accounts: +26,560. Prepaid insurance, postage, copier, conference and training deposits that will be expensed as the expenditures occur. Liabilities and Net Assets Due for Copy Overage: +842. This represents an overage owed to Hasselbring Clark for our six month copier maintenance contract. The over/under costs of the copier maintenance contract is billed every February and July. Accounts Payable: +28,716. This balance consists of operational expenditures to be remitted in November of 2004. The liability consists of some contract payments and other general operational expenditures. Other current liabilities: +31,845. The accrued vacation, unemployment tax liability, withholdings, sales tax payable and employee benefit accounts are expensed as the expenditure occurs. Unrestricted: +69,064. This account is the offset for the closeout of the Revenue over Expense account at fiscal year end. Temp. Restricted MNLI- C. S. Mott Grant: +35,346. The Charles Stewart Molt Foundation awarded a $75,000 two year grant in May of2004. The expenditures for the Michigan Nonprofit Leadership h1stitute programs are anticipated to occur throughout the fiscal year. Temp. Restricted- MNA Dues: +90,067. This balance is the unearned amount of member dues representing, for each member, 11121h of the annual dues payment. Revenue over Expenses: +133,788. This is the balance from the year to date revenue over expense statement. STATEMENT OF ACTIVITIES The information below is based on year to date (YTD) variance which is detailed in the second to the last column of the Statement of Activities. This line item represents a budgeted grant award that was awarded in May of2004 from The Charles Stewatt Molt Foundation in the amount of$75,000. This two year grant was awarded to support the Michigan Nonprofit Leadership Institute programs. Existing Grants- MNLI: +39,654. This line item is ahead of budget projections due to a grant award in May of 2004 that was budgeted in the Restricted Grants- MNLI. These funds were transferred from the Net Assets- Temporarily Restricted MNLI- C. S. Molt Foundation. All of the restricted foundation funds were transferred to cover budgeted expenditures. Restricted Grants- MPPI: +34,180. This line item is ahead of budget projections due to grant awards from theW. K. Kellogg Foundation and C. S. Molt Foundation. The largest of the savings is for anticipated costs of the training programs. Travel Expenses: <19,646>.
