I regret that we did not get to meet and talk, but my family commitments required that I be out of the state that day. Vivian and others were kind enough to let me know of your efforts, and I am very grateful for your consideration. I also wanted to share some great news concerning the ConnectMichigan Alliance (CMA). As you may recall from our conversation last summer, CMA is a cuttingedge initiative designed to provide long-term support for the thousands of people who volunteer daily in communities all across Michigan. We do this by bringing together the resources, expertise and leadership of Michigan's premiere statewide volunteer support organizations. John S. Lore, formerly with the Sisters of St. Joseph Health System, has agreed to take on the leadership reigns of the CMA and has been actively involved in moving our vision forward. John is a leader in the nonprofit sector and has a good deal of experience in helping grow innovative organizations. We are very excited about his appointment as President and CEO. The CMA will do its great work well into the future due to a $20 million permanent fund we are building with the help of a challenge grant from the State of Michigan and the private sector funds we have raised as a result. This biennial event is our State's preeminent gathering of the volunteer sector and a logical opportunity to recognize the exemplary efforts of the ConnectMichigan Alliance Campaign partners. We also hope to announce that we will be completing the final portion of the campaign as we currently have a number of key requests pending. We believe that General Motors is a vital potential partner in this endeavor and would like to encourage you to join our campaign. You have our organizational materials from our meeting last summer and I am enclosing a proposal for your consideration. We are requesting a $1 million commitment from General Motors. This is comparable to the request we made to both the Ford Motor Company Fund and the DaimlerChrysler Corporation Fund. Thank you for taking time from your busy schedule to discuss the Southeastern Michigan program coordinator representative from United Way Community Services to ConnectMichigan Alliance (CMA). The following is an articulation of the items we discussed: 1. The Southeastern Michigan Program Coordinator will report directly to you or your group vice president and we will contract with your office for that person's services. 2. The Program Coordinator will spend a maximum of one day per week in the CMA Lansing Office interacting with the Lansing Program Coordinator and other CMA Partner Program representatives. That person will be expected to attend statewide volunteer conferences sponsored by CMA or one of its partners. 3. While in the Lansing Office the Southeastern Michigan Program Coordinator will report directly to me. That reporting relationship will be focused on statewide program activities only. All employee and work related issues, such as evaluations, performance appraisals and work place benefits will be within the purview of United Way Community Services. The Southeastern Michigan Program Coordinator will be considered a contract employee to CMA. 4. CMA will cover up to 50% of the Program Coordinator's salary and travel expenses to CMA or Partner activities. All travel expenses must be approved by you, or your group vice president, or me. 5. CMA will provide office space in the Lansing Office for the Southeastern Michigan Program Coordinator. 6. The Southeastern Michigan Program Coordinator position will be filled in late May or June of 2003. If we do not begin to receive substantial payment of current pledges, the creation of the position might be pushed back until July of 2003 to parallel the 2003/2004 Fiscal Year Budget. We will keep you informed on our fundraising activities. Virgil, you and I will have time to refine the job description. However, simply stated, it will be this Coordinator's responsibility to coordinate current programs between Southeastern Michigan and the State which might have some synergistic relationship. Moreover that Coordinator will insure that all newly created programs reflect the ongoing needs of Southeastern Michigan and the State of Michigan. Adams, Officiating �The Obituary Vmgil Rowand (March 25, 1940 - May 30, 2003) United Way Community Services President and CEO Virgil Howard Carr died Friday, May 30th at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan as a result of complications following a stroke. Virgil Howard Carr was bom in Waterloo, Iowa to Ernest E. and Kathrine Carr. Mr. Carr was dedicated to. and leaves to cherish his memory his wife of over 22 years, Mrs. Mygene Lipscomb Carr. Virgil and Mygene walked together along a path as soul mates; enjoying fishing, and traveling, just to name a few of the joyous shared moments. His legacy will forever continue through his children. Mrs. Kimberly Carr-Irvin (Dennis) from Carr's first marriage to Mary Martin Carr; Lisa Adams (Raymond), and two sons, Ron Harmon, and Rodrick Tarver. Virgil cherished his surviving brothers, Benjamin Grundy-Carr, Ernest Carr and John Carr all of Waterloo, Iowa. He was preceded in death by both of his parents and sisters, Daisy Williams, Hattie Harrington, Suyvella Burkett, Clem Amos and Lathier Bagsby: brothers, Chauncey Carr and Thomas Carr. His father-in-law, Mr. Willie G. Lipscomb Sr.; brother-in-law, Mr. Clyde Lipscomb and sister-in-law, Bernice Dennis also preceded Virgil in death. Family was at the core of everything for Virgil, and he will forever be missed by his seven grandchildren, Alexandria and Shanta' Tarver, Byron Virgil. Dennis and Denzel Irvin, Kaylyn and Raymond Adams Jr.; sister-in-law, Bernice Johnson and Judge Willie G. Lipscomb Jr. was also a dedicated brother-in-law and friend. Virgil forever gently touched the lives of nieces, nephews, cousins and so many friends. He accepted Christ as his savior at an early age, and was baptized as a young man at Antioch Baptist Church in Waterloo. Virgil served as a Trustee at Hartford Memorial Baptist Church in Detroit. Virgil was a tireless advocate for people from all walks of life; under his leadership the United Way of Detroit became one of the largest in the country. Virgil worked shoulder to shoulder with his volunteers, staff and community doing the right thing for the children and families in Detroit. His work over the years impacted many all over the country. Carr served as United Way President and CEO at the United Way of Chicago (1985-1993). Virgil served as President and CEO at Family Services of Detroit and Wayne County, and United Charities of Chicago in addition to leading agencies in St. Louis, Omaha, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Other affiliations include Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, member of the Chicago Druids, member of the Oxford Estates (Farmington Hills) and Oak Haven neighborhood association in Bronson, Michigan. Virgil earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from Iowa State University (Ames. Iowa) and a Master of Social Work degree from Washington University (St. Louis, MO). He was honored as a distinguished Alumni for both Universities. Mr. Carr was the first member of his family to attend college, setting a precedence and continued legacy for generations to follow. Virgil H. Carr was a humble man, who walked the talk of volunteerism by personally serving, as a volunteer and member on numerous boards and commissions: Chairman of the Arts League of Michigan Board of Trustees, the Detroit Civic Executives Committee, the Cultural Arts Committee of the City of Detroit; Michigan Nonprofit Research Program; the George Warren Brown School of Social Work National Council at Washington University (St. Louis); the Board of Visitors at Wayne State University School of Social Work, the Board of Visitors at Indiana University, Member of the Board of Iowa State University Board of Regents. Virgil was a man of many talents. His focus and determination enabled him to forever impact and lend a hand to those less fortunate. His life is an example of dedication, to helping others and his unrelenting compassion has forever changed how children and families receive services in Detroit and around the county. Doing the right thing was his guiding principal in every aspect of his life. The Virgil H. Carr Legacy fund has been established in memory of Virgil Carr, who will be long remembered as a great community champion. The program will focus on women of color working with children to get them the five resources, or Promises, identified by America’s Promise as essential their successful growth: caring individual, safe place, healthy start, marketable skill, and an opportunity to serve. “America’s Promise is excited about bringing the resources of the United Way and the passion of women philanthropists together in Michigan to focus on the needs of children,” said Richard Wells, Vice President for Community and Public Policy with America’s Promise—The Alliance for Youth. America’s Promise—The Alliance for Youth was founded by Ret. Gen. Colin Powell after the 1997 President’s Summit for America’s Future in Philadelphia. Attended the Summit in Philly Launched Saginaw’s Promise Served on the Michigan Community Service Commission that launched Michigan’s Promise Connection to Women’s Initiative Now, we all have the opportunity to once again put Michigan in the lead of volunteerism and philanthropy with the Women’s Initiative. This program will focus on bringing women of color with young girls in mentoring relationships to focus on increasing philanthropy in our state. It will be an annual event to provide national recognition to communities for their youth-focused practices and policies. Reporting Dates: Mid-year report, June 30, 2005 Final report, December 31, 2005 1 �Program Narrative Purpose The ConnectMichigan Alliance (CMA) will support Michigan’s Promise’s support of the Women and Girls in Service to Children and Youth Initiative of the United Way of America and America’s Promise: The Alliance for Youth. CMA and Michigan’s Promise will work with United Way of Michigan and the CMA partners to provide support to the Women’s Initiative Communities and the Communities of Promise that wish to focus on the areas this initiative will highlight. Background CMA is a powerful force for volunteerism. It has forged an innovative partnership with four model organizations (Michigan Community Service Commission, Michigan Nonprofit Association, Michigan Campus Compact and Volunteer Centers of Michigan) to unite their efforts and to sustain and expand Michigan's volunteer infrastructure in a way that separate organizations cannot. Its endowment fund ensures the resources necessary for stability and long- term success of our state’s volunteer infrastructure. CMA's focus includes four critical areas: youth volunteerism, community volunteerism, higher education, and training and technical assistance. Building on Governor George Romney's vision that volunteers can change our world, CMA works to provide opportunities for every individual to give back to their community now and in the future. Michigan’s Promise is a program of the CMA and is working a three-year strategic plan to elevate the profile of the Promise in Michigan, engage community and state leaders, deepen grassroots support, and determine the methods of sustainability that can continue the effective efforts of the Promise. In addition, Michigan is fortunate that Governor Jennifer M. Granholm and First Gentleman, Daniel Mulhern have championed a focus on gaining mentors for youth in our state. This campaign, known as Mentor Michigan, is seeking 10,000 new mentors by 2006. The ConnectMichigan Alliance is working to join the Mentor Michigan campaign with Michigan’s Promise and its first promise. Program Elements Michigan’s Promise will utilize the America’s Promise funds to support the Women’s Initiative communities and the Michigan Communities of Promise sites in their efforts to encourage mentoring, philanthropy and volunteerism, and other areas of the Promise. Activities will include: 1. Convening Communities: Women’s Initiative Communities and Michigan Communities of Promise will be convened annually to share best practices; learn strategies on philanthropy, volunteerism and mentoring; and evaluate progress toward meeting community goals. Michigan’s Promise will also bring together the communities and partners (state and national) via conference calls on a bi-monthly basis to “check in” and ensure that community needs are being addressed. 2 �2. Training and Technical Assistance: Women’s Initiative Communities and Michigan Communities of Promise will have access to local, regional, or statewide training opportunities in areas based on individual community need. Training topics may include working with youth, mentoring, fundraising, board development and forging community partnerships. 3. Scholarships: Twelve scholarships will be made available to individuals and organizations from Women’s Initiative and Michigan’s Promise communities to attend conferences, meetings and learning opportunities related to the program. The six Women’s Initiative Communities will each be guaranteed a scholarship and the remaining six will be available to Communities of Promise on a competitive basis based on a work plan and application. 4. Communication/Marketing Strategies: The work of this project will be published on the CMA/Michigan’s Promise website to include activities, partnerships, and a library of tools specific to these communities to advance their work (costs may be lower if Promise Station can be utilized for this purpose without additional costs). In addition, quarterly e-newsletters will be published statewide and beyond as a way of celebrating and sharing the work of the initiative. Finally, and comprehensive final report will be developed to publish the lessons learned, challenges and future directions of the initiative. 5. Research: The work of the communities involved in this initiative will be supported through statewide research tools. These will include women’s philanthropy issues researched as part of Michigan’s annual Volunteering and Giving survey (see http://www.mnaonline.org/pdf/givingvol2003.pdf). In addition, communities will have data on mentoring in Michigan available to them through the Mentor Michigan Census. (see: http://www.michigan.gov/documents/MM_Census_10-04_109098_7.pdf). 6. Recognition: Local successes with this initiative should be celebrated to demonstrate to the public the cause and how philanthropy, volunteerism and mentoring can work to improve communities. Public recognition can also raise the profile of the work and encourage others to participate. This program will make eight recognition grant awards available to Women’s Initiative and Promise communities on a competitive basis. Applicants will be reviewed by a review panel made up of CMA partners, Michigan’s Promise Leadership Council members and designees from the Women’s Initiative partners. Local press conferences will be held to announce the awards. Sustainability Often program designs and proposals describe the sustainability of an initiative as a final point or as a future dream based on the availability of outside funding sources. Michigan’s Promise is different. Michigan’s Promise is part of the ConnectMichigan Alliance which uses its broad partnerships, cohesive organizational structure and its long horizon financial base ($20 million endowment) to incubate, launch and foster various programs like the Promise in Michigan. The Women’s Initiative funding will help grow 3 �the reach of the Promise and support efforts to increase philanthropy in Michigan, but the ConnectMichigan Alliance and its partner organizations will hopefully be able to integrate and support the outcomes of this funding for the long term. In addition, Michigan’s Promise will utilize the Women’s Initiative Funding to incorporate new communities into the Michigan’s Promise network of Communities of Promise (Currently, only Metro Detroit, Lansing and Grand Rapids serve both as elements of the Women’s Initiative and as Communities of Promise. See list attached). The ConnectMichigan Alliance is delighted to join in a partnership with America’s Promise, the Corporation for National and Community Service and United Way to launch and support the Women’s Initiative. The remaining amount, $14,625.00, will be charged to the grant. Travel – $2,450 - Travel costs for the Michigan’s Promise Coordinator to conduct site visits and attend one out-of-state meeting. Costs include car mileage, lodging, air fare (if necessary) and meals. $1,837.50 will be charged to the grant and $612.50 will serve as an in kind contribution. Convening – $4,000 - Costs to include a one-day meeting in Grand Rapids, Lansing or Metro Detroit to include all Michigan’s Promise and Women’s Initiative Community designees. Specifics will include room rental, AV, accommodations and speaker fees if necessary. Training – $8,000 – Costs to include two regional trainings at $2,500 each and funds to partially support local trainings at the six Women’s Initiative Communities at $500 each. Scholarships – $7,200 – Twelve $600 scholarships to be awarded to communities. Six to the Women’s Initiative Communities (6x$600= $3,600) plus six to Communities of Promise (6x$600=$3,600). Communication – $3,700 – Website development $2,000, e-bulletins $250, and final report $700. The program title, ConnectAmericaTM, was taken from remarks by former Michigan governor, George Romney. Romney often talked about "reconnecting our communities through service" and connecting individuals of diverse backgrounds to work together to solve community problems. Under the leadership of the Michigan Nonprofit Association and the Michigan Community Service Commission, Michigan has started the planning process to initiate a similar concept of connecting citizens in the great state of Michigan. Using the New Partners initiative as a starting point, ConnectMichiganTM will attempt to bring together the leadership of the three major sectors of society, the public, private, and nonprofit sectors, at the state level and in communities. ConnectMichigan'sTM mission statement is: "To increase connection among individuals, organizations, and communities in Michigan through community service that works to solve critical social problems." In order to accomplish this connection at the local level, we propose creating a state steering committee of 12-15 leaders throughout Michigan. The attached diagram illustrates the subsector focus that we propose for ConnectMichigan'sTM leadership. In each of the sub sector listings we have suggested an organization that would represent the interests of that group in the steering committee. Once the leadership ofConnectMichiganTM is in place, we propose hosting two to three steering committee meetings in the next 12 menths. The first meeting will be conducted in late 1996 and will focus on developing the 1997 plan for ConnectMichiganTM. It is our hope that in this meeting we can agree upon the ConnectMichiganTM mission statement, gamer the public support of each of the steering committee members for the ConnectMichigan™ effort, and identify in each subsector of the ConnectMichiganTM structure two to three communities or programs that will serve as potential models of connecting citizens in communities throughout the state. Michigan's New Partnerships VISTA project is administered by the Michigan Nonprofit Association in partnership with the Council of Michigan Foundations and the Michigan Community Service Commission. PROGRAM FOCUS: In six areas of the state, VISTAs will support the New Partnerships concept for community problem solving, through communication, citizen action and collaboration among private, nonprofit, and government sectors. VISTA efforts will strengthen inter-sector partnerships and support citizendriven community solutions particularly related to school success and to youth development during non-school hours. LOCATIONS: Three AmeriCorps*VISTA volunteers will work in each of the six areas (centered, but not limited to that town): Jackson, Muskegon, Detroit, Roscommon, Saginaw, and Marquette. FOCUS GOALS: • To assist in collaborative community strategic planning for service and volunteerism. • To assist local collaboratives in developing their own program capacity and alternative funding sources. • To develop community "asset maps," link new partners, and recruit volunteers to meet identified needs. • To facilitate the development of service learning and other community service opportunities, especially in the form of"one-stop shopping" models for comprehensive community-based program services.
