PURPOSE The luncheon is an opportunity to introduce the ConnectMichigan Alliance (CMA) and the endowment campaign that supports it to an audience of Grand Rapids leaders and potential donors. II. BACKGROUND The ConnectMichigan Alliance Campaign is targeting $1.5 million from the Greater Grand Rapids Community for the $10 million matching campaign goal. Mrs. Engler, Diana Sieger and Tom Monaghan (campaign consultant) met with Peter Secchia to discuss the best strategy for approaching potential donors, (see detailed report attached) Mr. Secchia suggested an intimate gathering of potential donors, hosted by the Governor and First Lady would be the best way to "get the message out," demonstrate the importance of the program, provide a compelling appeal and access the maximum number of donors at one time thereby making the best use of the Governor's and First Lady's limited availability. III. PARTICIPANTS Mr. Secchia worked with Diana Sieger and Tom Monaghan to develop an initial invitation list which was then reviewed by Mrs. Engler and Anne Mervenne. To date, there are 22 guests attending including members of the DeVos and VanAndel families (see guest list attached). No one from the Meijer family is attending. In addition to the invited guests, staff and volunteers will be present to help "work the room" and act as resources in case questions arise. Michigan Fundraising Strategy Notes: In addition to reaffirming what is commonly known about Grand Rapids (specifically, that its philanthropic interests are regional in nature), PS explained the unique stewardship that occurs within Grand Rapids specifically and that even within that community, only those who reside in Grand Rapids are considered true members of the community. Most notable examples of this are Bob & Judy Hooker who now reside (a good portion of the time) outside of Michigan. Any message must be tailored to keeping the good things going in Grand Rapids and demonstrating how CMA will provide a continuous level of support into the future. The investments need to show that the money donated is working in Grand Rapids for Grand Rapids. Transition in leadership at the state level was discussed as a possible justification for developing the CMA. PS interests are primarily focused on helping the Englers since Mrs. Engler asked him. While receptive, Peter Secchia clearly did not understand what the CMA would do for Grand Rapids and was not receptive to the concept until we were able to target a specific example of how one of the partners in the CMA was impacting a component of the community (discussed the Creston Neighborhood AmeriCorps program that MCSC currently funds). More examples like this will have to be crafted before seeking funding in this community. As many of you know, Peter wears so many hats; it is sometimes difficulty to know what to call him. For now, I will just say a very heartfelt thank you to a friend and dedicated volunteer. I also want to thank Peter for agreeing to help host this lovely luncheon today. I treasure your leadership and volunteer spirit. Thank you. Well, welcome to all of you here and thank you for joining us for this very brief, but hopefully inspiring program. John and I are very delighted that you have agreed to join us today to talk about an exciting opportunity to strengthen our communities—especially right here in west Michigan. As many of you know, John and I believe in the power that one individual can have to positively affect another. This tremendous force goes by many names—volunteerism, philanthropy, service—but whatever the label, it is always about giving of one's time, treasures and talents to others. There are no other enduring forms of community problem solving that we can point to that have as profound an impact as giving. And while we know the potential giving can have, we often find our communities blessed caring citizens who are often overwhelmed by their local challenges. John has pointed to this contradiction—overwhelming needs in places where people want to help, but don't know how—often during his public life and says that it is not a contradiction at all, but rather a formula for opportunity. Matching the needs of local communities with their own untapped human resources is what volunteerism and civic engagement are all about. And that is what John and I are here to discuss with you today. How do we connect our citizens with their communities so that they themselves can become the agents of positive local change? Our answer is the ConnectMichigan Alliance and the ConnectMichigan Alliance Campaign. The Alliance is an innovative partnership of the state's premiere volunteer support organizations: the Michigan Community Service Commission, Michigan Nonprofit Association, Michigan Campus Compact, and the Volunteer Centers of Michigan. The Campaign is a $20 million dollar endowment-building program to create a permanent support mechanism for our state's volunteers. This afternoon John, Peter, Diana and I are going to talk briefly about the ConnectMichigan Alliance and how it will support volunteers and the nonprofits they �serve statewide. We will present the concept and impact of this new organization and show you examples of how it will positively impact the greater Grand Rapids Community. We are also going to talk with about what you can do to help bring this cutting-edge initiative to fruition for Grand Rapids. There are volunteers here to address your questions and we have provided plenty of time for you to discuss this exciting opportunity. At your places you should have a copy of the ConnectMichigan Alliance Campaign Brochure that explains the principles and goals we have for this organization and the campaign that will support it. Later, we will be playing a short video that provides a deeper explanation of the program and offers testimony as to the merits of the work we all know is so very valuable to our communities. Finally, I would like to take a moment and introduce some of the wonderful volunteers who have agreed to help us develop the ConnectMichigan Alliance, many of which are here with us today. I was calling in from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to discuss Michigan's Service-Learning with Chris Kwak. Regarding the Grand Rapids Service Corps and Judy Hooker, the GRSC was in a difficult position 12-18 months ago when the management of the program fell apart and was unable to effectively administer the AmeriCorps program. They decided to step away from the AmeriCorps program and the larger corps model to reflect on what the program should be in the future and how to sustain it. In our dealings with the program staff, we worked to ensure that the program could close out their program and take efforts to ensure that corps members were able to complete their terms of service and receive their education awards. The AmeriCorps program has been closed out for over a year. Since that time, the GRSC has merged with the YMCA of Grand Rapids to build a ServiceLearning program that focuses on the 5,000 youth currently involved in after-school programs in the Y's seven branches in Kent County. This model uses the "Corps members" to operate summer school service-learning programs and during the school year, staff will provide Service-Learning professional development training for the YMCA staff who have contact with children the YMCA serves. I was present at their launch two weeks ago. Judy was there along with several other original GRSC board members. Diana Sieger was also present. We discussed the possibility of the connection between the new GRSC and the ConnectMichigan Alliance. She agreed that she would discuss the potential connection in her remarks at the luncheon tomorrow and it will be reinforcing for you to speak on the potential connection between the Alliance and the YMCA Service-Learning Program. �June4, 2001 I have requested that Toyin (Executive Director of the GRSC) bring brochures describing the program that were used at their launch. Peter, Tom and others are aware of the program and will speak to the possible connection as well. I spoke with Judy Hooker at the launch event, but we did not discuss the potential for and connection regarding the CMA. There was too little time and the place wasn't right. I did get a chance to gauge her interest in bringing new funding opportunities to the table and she was receptive. collabon~tion We can go over some of the collateral materials tomorrow at the Amway. Lunch will consist of a salad, main course (which could be chicken, pork, fish with potato and vegetables) and dessert plus coffee, tea or soda. Cost for Pinnacle Room is $500 but Mr. Tomaselli will waive that cost. The Pinnacle Room will only hold 50 people in tables of rounds. Now that you have a feel for the ConnectMichigan Alliance and what it can do for Michigan, I want to talk to you about why your participation is so very important. Many believe that volunteering is something that just happens. People recognize a need, figure out how they can help and just do it. While this may certainly true for many of us in this room, it isn't universal. If it were, we wouldn't see the tremendous challenges we see daily in our communities. Challenges like low test scores, teen pregnancies, violence in schools and decaying neighborhoods are local issues that can be address only through local solutions. Yet, we know that only 46 percent of Michigan adults volunteered in 1999. In addition, the majority who did not volunteer that year said that they had not been asked even though they had said that they volunteered in the past. How do we engage more citizens in local community problem solving? We ask and then we show them how to make an impact. Volunteerism takes the dedication and hard work of local people and organizations that are closest to the needs of communities and can identify human and financial resources to address those needs and engage others to help. In short—volunteerism isn't free or easy, but it is effective. It takes coordination, support and resources for volunteerism flourish and become a common expectation. However, we know that volunteers—properly trained and supported—can do far more good for a far longer period of time than any government program. Former Governor George Romney knew this and worked throughout his life to make volunteer opportunities part of every citizens daily experiences. We all remember his goal of making volunteer centers as common as the post office. Well, we are here today to make goals like that a reality. He believed, as I do, that we can—each of us—do something to profoundly change the lives of others. Let me give you some examples. Every year, Michelle and I get to meet the winners of the Governor's Service Awards. These people represent the exemplary efforts of citizens who are young and young at heart, and who are giving of themselves to make our communities safer, more prosperous �and better places to live. Last year, I met Gertrude Perry from Greenville, who was honored for her service as a Foster Grandparent Program volunteer. Since 1989, Ms. Perry has volunteered with various organizations and schools. As a Foster Grandparent Program volunteer, the then eighty-five year old volunteered 20 hours each week during the school year, 560 hours every year, and logging more than 6,000 hours over the past 11 years in service to young people in need. Kevin Elya, from Brighton, who was honored for his commitment to Paws with a Cause—a program that works to train dogs that help persons with disabilities navigate seemingly routine daily tasks for some, serious challenges for others. Mr. Elya serves as a volunteer presenter, educator and fund-raiser. He has touched the lives of thousands and changed the lives of many by encouraging people with disabilities to seek out ways to become independent. Mr. Elya is in a wheelchair and uses his unique perspective to help others and works to train dogs for companions and aides to other persons with disabilities. These are just two examples of exemplary volunteerism—there are certainly many more that we could all point to as worthy of praise. Their dedication is uncommon as is the support and coordination that they receive. Both of the examples I mentioned illustrate volunteers who work in a structured, supported and sustainable volunteer organizations that have a genuine impact on their community. That is what the ConnectMichigan Alliance can do for communities all across Michigan. By combining the forces of the state's premiere volunteer support organizations with the resources of a $20 million endowment, we all can ensure that future generations will be served by and themselves become, community volunteers. That is why I worked with fine Legislators like Glenn Steil to put up a $10 million dollar challenge grant to build an endowment to support volunteers now and in the future. This challenge must be met by November of 2002 and has gotten off to a fine start. Both the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the C.S. Mott Foundation have each committed $1 million to the campaign. That leaves $8 million more. With your help we can reach that goal. In order to be successful, the ConnectMichigan Alliance Campaign needs to secure $1.5 million from west Michigan donors. It is our hope that $1 million of that sum can be secured from the greater Grand Rapids community. We need your help both through your participation in this campaign and you willingness to help us gain the support of others. Michelle and I have often talked about what can be done to bring volunteerism to a level that makes it a part of every Michigan citizen's life. Michelle has been instrumental in making this happen through her own personal leadership both here in Michigan and at the national level. Her role in shaping one of the nation's leading commissions on service and volunteerism along with her own personal volunteer efforts are exactly the type of dedication she seeks to instill in others. But it takes an efficient and effective series of individuals, organizations and events to make it happen. We often call this, �"infrastructure" for volunteerism. While "infrastructure" is not a glamorous term to sell—the term is accurate. Like any community-building mechanism, a sound and efficient support system has to be in place to make it work. Just like good roads, safe schools and clean parks make communities better; they are not as "sexy" as sleek cars, ornate school buildings, and shining skyscrapers. Yet, it is that infrastructure that makes it all possible. We now have to provide the same type of support for our volunteers. Volunteer centers, training for volunteers, service-learning projects and corporate volunteer programs may not sound glamorous, they are absolutely critical to building enduring volunteer community problem solving. I am sure that you will recognize what I and the Michigan Legislature did last year— volunteerism takes a long-term commitment to make work and that we need to endow our support so that future generations can take that "infrastructure" for granted. PURPOSE Brief Mr. Fisher on the ConnectMichigan Alliance (CMA) Campaign, seek his advice and assistance in solidifying our Southeastern Michigan funding strategy, and set the ground work for soliciting a gift of $1 million from Mr. Fisher. II. BACKGROUND Julie F. Cummings has encouraged the CMA Leadership and staff to discuss the CMA with Mr. Fisher for about a year. She has been discussing the CMA and her excitement for the work we are doing with Mr. Fisher and he responded favorably and suggested that someone discuss this with him. Julie and Peter Cummings have committed $100,000 to the campaign. It was Julie's feeling that the best approach to gain Mr. Fisher's support would be one from the Governor and Mrs. Engler. Even though Julie suggested that $1 million should be the ask amount, she also stressed that Mr. Fisher will likely initially say no to that figure. Julie stressed that we should be very persistent with the $1 million figure as his decline is expected and a normal way of handling such large requests. Mr. Fisher's gift and leadership is vitally important to the Southeastern Michigan strategy for the CMA. Many will look to his action to gauge their own activity and his gift would set the bar high given that he is often considered more conservative in his giving strategy and is highly skeptical of government programs although he is very active in politics (see biography and curriculum vitae attached). If he can participate and a leadership level, it would be a ringing endorsement and many skeptics will be without ammunition. To date, the major foundations in Southeastern Michigan have all been approached as well as the Big Three Automakers . An update on the gifts secured to date is attached (see Fund Advancement Plan- Start Up). Gifts at the $1 million level include the C.S . Mott Foundation, W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and H & G Dow Foundation. Other gifts of potential interest to Mr. Fisher may include the Whitney Fund ($50,000), Hudson-Webber Foundation ($100,00), Comerica ($150,000), and Detroit Edison ($350,000). �III. EVENT SCENARIO There are two potential scenarios, depending on whether Julie Cummings is able to attend. At the time of this draft, Julie was going to try to make the meeting, but had a scheduling conflict with the Council of Michigan Foundation's Annual Conference. Should Julie be in attendance, she would open the conversation with introductions of the parties present and state that it was Mrs. Engler' s desire to speak with Mr. Fisher concerning the ConnectMichigan Alliance and emphasize her enthusiasm for the initiative and the campaign that supports it. If Julie is not in attendance, the meeting would begin with Mrs. Engler making introductions and starting the conversation. The conversation would then move to Mrs. Engler who would layout the fundamental components of the CMA and the campaign as she has in previous approaches to potential funders. • • Infrastructure: For years, Michigan has been a leader in supporting service and volunteerism because of the investment many have made in developing a strong nonprofit infrastructure: o Michigan Nonprofit Association- Chamber for Nonprofits o Michigan Campus Compact - Coalition of higher ed. Institutions that stress service o Volunteer Centers of Michigan - Professional association of volunteer centers with members serving over 80% of Michigan ' s counties o Michigan Community Service Commission - one of the nation's leading service commissions that provides public support and recognition for service and volunteerism including AmeriCorps (domestic form of the Peace Corps) and the Governor's Service Awards. Synergy & Innovation: These organizations have formed a partnership that combines their forces and begins to institutionalize (in the best way) service and volunteerism in Michigan through long-term partnerships and an endowment created through an innovative public/private partnership. o The ConnectMichigan Alliance is a nonprofit organization made up of the partnering organizations, lead by JohnS. Lore (see resume attached), and supported through a $20 million endowment. �o • • • The State ofMichigan (through the leadership of Governor Engler and the Michigan Legislature) has put forward a $10 million challenge grant (expiring in Nov. of 2002) that will leverage an equal sum from the private sector. o Together, the partnership and the endowment will help Michigan reach its goal of being able to provide a quality volunteer opportunity for every Michigan resident. Legacy: Much of the thinking that went into forming the ConnectMichigan Alliance started with a vision of former Governor George Romney who believed that connecting with each other through volunteerism was one of the only ways communities would be able to solve their most perplexing problems. Building on his ideas of bringing together the leadership or our state and nation around volunteers and organizations they serve was one of the hallmarks of his post-politics career. Governor Engler was approach many times about building a sustainable force for volunteerism, but the timing with regard to the maturity of the organizations involved, the leadership and the quality of a plan to make it all come together did not exist- until now. The ConnectMichigan Alliance is the fruit of his labor. Detroit: The CMA Campaign has been successful in it first round of approaches to the larger foundations in the state, but especially in Southeastern Michigan. The gifts secured to date include: C.S. Mott Foundation, W.K. Kellogg Foundation, H&G Dow Foundation, Whitney Fund, Hudson-Webber Foundation, Comerica, Detroit Edison, and Julie and Peter Cummings. There $1 million requests pending with Daimler Chrysler, General Motors and Ford Motor Company. The Kresge Foundation has given preliminary indications that it will commit $1 million and the other area foundations are giving leadership gifts serious consideration. Mr. Fisher: The CMA Campaign needs a serious boost to get the area funders and individual leaders on board. A significant show of support from Mr. Fisher would move the campaign along and give an entree to the area individual givers as well as the area businesses that look to Mr. Fisher and his family for leadership in their philanthropy. A $1 million .gift would do that. Other forms of assistance may include a gathering of other potential donors where his demonstration of support may be highlighted and phone calls to key leaders in the Southeastern Michigan community pointing out his support for the CMA Campaign. Mrs. Engler would tum to Mr. Lore to give him an opportunity to express his support. Other participants would be encouraged to give their views as the conversation warrants. Support materials will be supplied by Mr. Caldwell and will include the background information, campaign brochure and other related information. No formal proposal will be provided at this time, but will be available in follow up correspondence. �Max Martin Fisher An investor and former oilman worth an estimated $760 million, Max M. Fisher has been "a friend and advisor to every Republican president since Eisenhower," boasts the Republican Jewish Coalition, an influential political group he founded under a different name in 1985. "He has played a remarkable, if quiet, role in the history of both (Israel and the United States)." Born to Russian immigrants in the small town of Salem, Ohio, Fisher attended Ohio State University on a football scholarship. After school he joined his father's oil reclamation business in Detroit. Fisher grew that business into one of the largest gas station chains in the Midwest before selling the business in 1959 and investing in a series of stock and real estate deals that made him one of Detroit's richest residents . At age 92, he still sits on the board of Comerica, the consumer and investment bank, and Sotheby's, the embattled English auction house. He is also on the board of Restoring the American Dream, a conservative political action committee led by Richard DeVos Sr. (worth, $764,500). Throughout his economic climb, Fisher headed up a variety of Jewish-American organizations, including the United Jewish Appeal, the Council of Jewish Federations, and the American Jewish Committee. According to a recent biography, Fisher was asked by Ford and Kissinger in 1975 to help heal a diplomatic rift between the United States and Israel over relations with Egypt. Fisher met repeatedly with Israeli leaders and Ford's chief of staff, Donald Rumsfeld, who is now Secretary of Defense under George W. Bush. Fisher's report, the biography suggests, helped shape Ford's policy towards Israel. "My ftmdamental responsibility was as an American," Fisher explained. "Then as an American Jewish leader. And finally, I had my love for Israel." In recent years, the Republican Jewish Coalition has supported a hard-line approach to negotiating an Israeli-Palestinian peace accord, criticizing President Clinton for "appeasing Chairman Arafat" instead of requiring "responsibility and compliance from the Palestinian Authority." The group supported the construction of the controversial Har Homa settlement in East Jerusalem, over Palestinian objections that the project jeopardized the peace process. It also supports continued American military support oflsrael, including a recent project to build an anti-ballistic missile system. On the domestic front, the RJC supports school choice and voucher initiatives as effective tools to curb the "risk of assimilation" for some Jews living in the United States. "By lessening the financial burdens, vouchers would make a Jewish education available to the entire Jewish community," reads one position paper. The group has supported welfare reform, lowering the estate and capital gains taxes, voluntary prayer by student groups in public school, abortion rights, and tougher crime laws, including a California-style "three strikes" law for some federal cnmes. During the presidential campaign, the RJC took out a full-page ad in the New York Times chastising Senator Joseph Lieberman for making ovations to Nation oflslam leader Louis Farrakhan, whom the group called an "unrepentent promoter of hatred, bigotry, and anti- �Semitism." Mott Foundation for his willingness to commit a $1 million pledge to the ConnectMichigan Alliance Campaign (CMA)-a $20 million endowment campaign to strengthen service and volunteerism in Michigan. She asked that I contact you directly to confirm. Mrs. Engler made the request in her role as Co-chair of the ConnectMichigan Alliance (CMA) Campaign. She asked that I contact you to ensure that the call is placed on the Governor's schedule. The Governor's involvement started with the $10 million challenge grant he made to the campaign as part oflast year's budget supplemental. I along with Mrs. Engler and others met with the Governor last year about this initiative and he has been thoroughly briefed on the CMA (formerly known as the Alliance). Mr. White was approached by Robert Collier from the Council of Michigan Foundations on behalf of the campaign, and asked to commit $1 million. He agreed and Rob, after �gaining the approval of Mrs. Engler, said that either Mrs. Engler or the Governor would follow up with a call after a written proposal had been submitted. The proposal was submitted and has been received by the Foundation. Mrs. Engler said that it would be better for the Governor to make the call to give the conversation and consideration of the proposal higher status given that $1 million is a leadership gift to the campaign. The call should be made this week (11/27- 12/1) or the beginning of next week (12/412/5) as the C.S. Mott Foundation Board of Trustees will meet on December 6, 2000 to consider and hopefully fund the proposal. A call from the Governor would transmit to the Board, just how committed the State of Michigan is to this endeavor and give the proposal more significance. As an update to the Governor on the Campaign, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation has committed $1 million to the campaign and its CEO, Wm. Richardson has agreed to cochair the campaign along with Mrs. Engler and Mrs. Julie Fisher Cummings. Mr. White's assistant's nan1e is Ms. Jean Simi and the number at the Foundation is 810238-5651 .
