Michigan Nonprofit Association, Volunteer Centers of Michigan �• Northern Michigan - Kyle and Anne will arrange a brief encounter between Connie Binsfield and Michelle during the State of the State message at which time Connie will be asked to author a letter to the Rotary Charities requesting a $50,000 grant to CMA. After the meeting, a follow up letter from Michelle (to be drafted by Kyle and John) will be sent to Connie with a draft of her letter and proposal to Rotary Charities. • Southeastern Michigan - Kyle will rework the letters from Michelle to DaimlerChrysler and General Motors to reflect a lighter tone and more positive encouragement, informing each that the Ford Motor Company gift level of $1,000,000 was awarded. It was felt that the letters should take on a different tone, particularly since Sandy Ulsh informed Frank and Rod that Ford was considering a $1,000,000 level gift. The purpose now is only to officially acknowledge that the Ford Motor Company Fund gift has been awarded to CMA. It was agreed that the best approach to the potential major individual contributors and larger corporate contributors in the Southeastern Michigan area is through a meeting modeled after the Grand Rapids luncheon. One presentation from the Governor and Michelle would satisfy the necessity of multiple meetings. The invitations would be sent from Peter and Julie Cummings. Michelle will talk to the Governor and Julie will talk to Peter. Concerning the approach to Max Fisher, Michelle will talk to the Governor to determine the most appropriate action in pursuing the request. John agreed to talk to Peter Secchia to consider authoring the Tier II Corporate letters for those companies not located in Southeastern Michigan and not a part of the Southeastern Michigan luncheon. • John and Kyle agreed to work closely with Anne to coordinate scheduling for Michelle, particularly as we approach the completion of the campaign. While I am not in a position to disclose the information I am now sharing with you publicly, I have had initial discussions with the Michigan Nonprofit Association regarding a transfer of their Volunteerism Endowments to the CMA Endowment. Johnson Thanks to the incredible effort and commitment of so many key people, we are almost there!!! With supplemental gifts of $150,000 each from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, as well as the General Motors Corporation and a new gift of $150,000 from Comcast Corporation, we are within $45,748 that we must raise to qualify for $2,200,000 in campaign completion challenge matching funds. We need your help immediately! As Bill and Dottie have so clearly articulated, at this point in the campaign we are pursuing personal contacts that can make a pledge by December 31, 2003, without having to go through a timely and complicated proposal submission process. We obviously do not have the luxury of time for the traditional proposal submission process. The USA Freedom Corps should reflect this reality. • States and local communities have developed strong public/private partnerships through service and volunteerism that can be utilized. The USA Freedom Corps should target these partnerships as potential models and structures • Communities are best able to define their needs, strategies and solutions. The USA Freedom Corps should provide adequate resources for communities to plan, collaborate and create innovative programs and partnerships that target national imperatives with local long-term solutions. • Homeland security and community service require a strong local "infrastructure" to implement and support local efforts (i.e. Vounteer Centers, K-12 and Higher Education, National Service, etc.). The USA Freedom Corps must invest in this "infrastructure" as a means of delivering quality programming in a cost effective manner. Recommendations: 1. As a result of the declining economy and the terrorist action of September 11, 2001, the operational income expected from monies raised for CMA has fallen short of original projections. From the thirty major contributors who have supported CMA to date, in the amount of $5,507,660.00, only two have paid the pledge in total. The rest of the contributors have made pledges for multiple years, with the average being five years. Moreover, notwithstanding the fact that the State of Michigan has been extremely generous in matching pledges as well as cash, the economy has been such that the interest earned on the approximately $7.5 million, in the permanent endowment, has been much less than budgeted for the operations and for the staffing of the program coordinator (who was to be hired in September of 2001), which has been pushed back to July of 2002. Because of this shortfall we will be required to seek permission to take funds from our permanent endowment corpus by April of this year, if we do not receive support from the W.K. More than seventy local nonprofit leaders from communities throughout Michigan participated in a two-year planning process. In their deliberations, planners considered the following facts: Overall Significance of Michigan's Volunteers • Almost 90 percent of all charitable organizations, participating in Public Sector Consultants' (PSC) 1997 survey, rely on volunteers. Charitable organizations indicated they averaged 180 volunteers and nearly 9,500 volunteer hours, which translates to 4.6 full-time workers per organization. PSC estimates that more than 1 million volunteers contribute nearly 60 million hours to Michigan nonprofit organizations, an equivalent of more than 28,000 full-time employees and nearly $760 million in donated labor. • According to Michigan Giving & Volunteering, a 1999 statewide report published jointly by the Council of Michigan Foundations and the Michigan Nonprofit Association, 46.7 percent of Michigan adults volunteered during the past twelve months - the majority indicating they are volunteering more hours annually than in the past. • Michigan Giving & Volunteering also revealed that 81.3 percent of those who did not volunteer in 1999 indicated they had not been asked to do so over half said they had been volunteers in the past. Changing Dynamics and Capacity Challenges in Supporting Volunteerism and Service-Learning • As a requirement for graduation, many school districts and institutions of higher education are mandating students complete a set number of hours of volunteer service annually. While the intent is to civically engage young people in a meaningful experience, the need for formal training available to nonprofit organizations, to the schools and to youth far exceeds its availability. • The percentage of students engaged in service-learning through institutions of higher education has annually increased at a double-digit pace over the past several years. Over 17 million hours of service were contributed by undergraduates nation wide. As this trend continues, institutions of higher education will require expanded support services such as those provided by CMA to ensure the quality of service-learning programs. • Michigan corporations are experiencing a growing need to engage in local initiatives to improve the quality of life in the communities in which they are located. Organizations that fail to address them limit their success in terms of reaching their goals. How many exist within your MNA? 1. "If we need a million dollars, all we need to do is get 1,000 people to give us $1,000 each." Creating "grass-roots" campaigns will usually only work in projects where there are a pre-determined number of prospects - memberships, churches, etc. In most community campaigns, the concept of equal sacrifice (wealthier people give more than less wealthier people) must be used to insure reaching goals. 2. "There is no way 'Mr. Smith' will make a gift to this campaign ... he doesn't give!" There is a tendency to assume certain prospects won't give, but a true campaign builds the campaign atmosphere and leadership confidence necessary to have a reasonable expectation most people who are asked, correctly, will give. Outside counsel should base decisions on capability ... and then determine willingness. 3. "Let's do the first part, and then see how that goes before we decide how to do the rest of it." A key to virtually every campaign is a comprehensive, yet flexible, campaign plan that shows the path to reaching a pre-determined goal. Unless an organization has a blueprint for success a campaign really can't succeed. 4. "There is no way I can ask anyone for that much money." Major gifts are critical to a campaign's success. Many people, and companies, are committed to making their community a better place by making what are, to many people, an extraordinary gift. If you don't ask for a major gift, most prospects will never think to make one. Remember, 80% of the funds you raise will come from 20% of your donors. This is true in virtually every successful campaign. Proper training by experienced counsel can ensure that gift levels are at a maximum and the solicitation is conducted properly. 5. "I'm donating my time, I shouldn't have to make a sacrificial, or any other type of, gift." If the very people closest to the organization- the ones who should be most committed - don't make gifts, then why would anyone else? Board members in particular are important. Even if no single individual can make a major gift, often times the Board of Directors as a group can make the leadership gift. 6. "This campaign will last until its finished ... even if it takes years!" �A solid timetable, with built-in "mini-goals", is cmcial in order to keep a campaign moving. Built in "pressure points" will help create faster decisions from prospects and keep leaders focused on the campaign. Most importantly it will avoid the campaign "dragging on". 7. "We raise a lot of money every year, we can easily do a capital campaign." Capital campaigns are different. You are asking people to buy into your vision, not just your immediate goals. You are asking them to make multi-year commitments to your cause and that requires a special level of commitment. Often times it is harder for donors to see the need for bricks and mortarespecially if your normal fund raising is centered on social services needs. 8. "We can save a lot of money by "piggybacking" on our current development efforts." Campaigns are different. A unique theme, materials, style and plan must accommodate these differences. The campaign must become the focus of the organization's efforts. 9. "We have to get a lot of publicity. Once people know why we need this money, people will gladly give." Actually, news articles and television reports are not extremely helpful in raising money. People are inundated with emotional appeals and are not generally moved to make major gifts because of press accounts. Newsletters and personal letters are most effective in reminding already solicited prospects they need to make a decision. Publicity must be a part of the overall campaign plan and is not a substitute for good planning and implementation. 10. "Fund raising counsel is too expensive. Our own staff can do it and we have a couple of board members who have been chairpersons of some other campaigns. Campaigns managed by counsel usually raise more money than campaigns mn without counsel. For the most part, counsel-driven campaigns take less time, use leaders more effectively and the total cost (expenses plus fees) is usually less than 10-15% of the funds pledged. Experienced staff is helpful, but can they do their normal responsibilities and conduct a major campaign? Experienced fund raising volunteers are important but no substitute for the efforts of an experienced manager to make sure a solid campaign plan is in place and executed. The intent of this update is to keep you informed of campaign progress without inundating you with day-to-day details. The following are highlights of planned and actual activities for the 90-day "silent" phase of the campaign that began on January 2, 2001 and will continue through March 31 , 2001. Pre-Silent Phase • • • The first ConnectMichigan Alliance Campaign Leadership Committee meeting was held on December 19, 2000. Mrs. Engler announced the $10 million challenge grant from the state of Michigan on December 19, 2000. Dr. Richardson announced two $1 million dollar lead gifts, one from the C. S. Mott Foundation, and one from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation on December 19, 2000. Silent Phase- Goal: develop $6 million (60%) toward the match • • The ConnectMichigan Alliance Campaign began its "silent" phase on January 2, 2001. Staff issued follow-up letters on January 5, 2001 highlighting the ConnectMichigan Alliance Campaign Leadership Committee meeting to all Leadership Committee members. �• • • • • • • • Staff met with Dr. Richardson on January 10, 2001 to finalize plans for the Foundation Division of the campaign. Staff met with Dr. Mawby on January 10,2001 to develop regional strategies for the Fatmdation Division of the campaign. Staff will meet with Dr. Mieras on January 18, 2001 to continue planning on various strategies for the overall campaign. Staff will meet with Mrs. Engler on January 24, 2001 to finalize plans for the Corporate Division of the campaign. Staffwill meet with Mrs. Cummings on January 24, 2001 to finalize plans for the Individual Division of the campaign. Staff will meet with Dr. Gilbertson, Dr. Mieras and Dr. Olivarez on February 1 to finalize planning on various strategies for the overall campaign. Staff continues to schedule meetings with all members of the Campaign Leadership Committee for the purpose of identifying personal financial support for the campaign, plan strategies for the overall can1paign, and identify campaign responsibilities. The work group plans to kick-off activities in this region on June 5th. • Planning continues in the Special Gifts Division of the campaign. Julie Fisher Cummings will begin cultivation activities in April. • Bill Richardson kicked-off the strategy for cultivating foundations in Southeastern Michigan with a preliminary presentation to a group of foundation executives from Southeastern Michigan on March 19. Various Leadership Committee members and staff are preparing for follow-up meetings with individual foundation executives that are being scheduled over the next 60 days. • The strategy for cultivating the Mid-Michigan foundation network will begin in early April. • In follow-up to the February 27th efforts of Russ Maw by, Rob Collier, Neeta Delaney and Patty Reynolds who presented a strong case for support from the community foundation network, proposals are being developed for a May 1 st release. • We know there' s a lot of work to be done, but the response to date from the Leadership Committee continues to be overwhelmingly positive. Foundation Division- $2,020,000 in Revenue to Date Chair- Bill Richardson Midland Strategy: Bill Richardson and Dottie Johnson met with Ranny Riecker of the Dow Foundation on May 4th. This meeting helped to finalize a strategy for all other foundation visits in Mid-Michigan, which will be completed over the next 90 days. Two proposals have been issued, one to The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation and the other to the Harry A. & Margaret D. Towsley Foundation. Southeastern Michigan Strategy: Bill Richardson met with foundation executives in March and staff met with David Egner at the Hudson-Webber Foundation in February. Bill Richardson and Dottie Johnson met with John Marshall of The Kresge Foundation on May 31 51 • This meeting will help establish a strategy for all other foundation visits in Southeastern Michigan. Those meetings should be completed over the next 60 days. Staff is preparing a proposal for The Kresge Foundation. Southwest Michigan Strategy: Cultivation efforts are underway. Russ Mawby will meet with Steve Upton of the Upton Foundation in the next 30 days. This meeting will set the tone for all other meetings with foundations in Southwest Michigan. Those meetings should be completed in the next 120 days. West Michigan Strategy: Diana Sieger is working on plans to approach foundations in West Michigan. Several foundation executives attended a special reception she coordinated with Peter Secchia and Michelle Engler (see Special Gifts Division). Foundation visits will begin in the next 60 days and be completed in the next 120 days. South Central Michigan Strategy: Planning is still underway. Neeta Delaney, Carolyn Bloodworth, and Patty Reynolds are working with staff to help cultivate and contact foundation executives from this region. It is expected foundation visits will begin in the fall and be completed by the end of the calendar year. Community Foundation Strategy: Neeta Delaney and Russ Mawby made an initial presentation to community foundation executives at the Council of Michigan Foundations Annual Meeting for Community Foundations. A proposal has been sent to every community foundation in Michigan. Diana Sieger will follow-up personally with the larger community foundations and Neeta Delaney will follow-up personally with the next tier of foundations. Julie Fisher Cummings will also help Bill Richardson and Dottie Johnson in their efforts to secure support from the Community Foundation for Southeastern Michigan. III. Corporate Division Chair - Michelle Engler Midland Strategy: Cultivation efforts have resulted in both Dow Chemical and Dow Coming indicating interest in CMA. Michelle Engler expects to meet with executives after wrapping up the Southeastern Michigan strategy. It is expected these meetings will take place in the next 60 days. Southeastern Michigan Strategy: Early cultivation efforts are paying off, as this is the most active strategy in the campaign to date. April meetings include: • Michelle Engler, Geneva Williams, Julie Fisher Cummings and Kyle Caldwell met with Tony Earley, Martin Taylor and Karla Hall of Detroit Edison. DTE is considering CMA's proposal at their July Board meeting. Comerica is considering a proposal. Michelle Engler, Terry Pruitt, Julie Fisher Cummings and Kyle Caldwell met with Frank Fountain and Lynn Feldhouse of DaimlerChrysler. Follow-up activity will be completed over the next 90 days. Michelle Engler, Geneva Williams, Julie Fisher Cummings and Sam Singh met with Deborah Dingell, Vivian Pickard, Lorna Utley and Rod Gillum of General Motors. Follow-up activity will be completed over the next 90 days. Kyle Caldwell, Sam Singh and Tom Monaghan met with Rick Cole of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. CMA will submit a proposal in the fall. Michelle Engler had an initial conversation with Jacques Nasser of Ford Motor Company. A follow-up meeting will be scheduled within the next 60 days. The results of these meetings look very encouraging and we hope to announce some exciting news in the very near future. Additional meetings are being scheduled. West Michigan Strategy: Cultivation efforts are underway. The results of these efforts are encouraging and we hope to announce some exciting news in the near future. West Michigan Strategy: Cultivation efforts are underway. Michelle Engler, Peter Secchia and Diana Sieger coordinated a special reception hosted by the Englers on June 5th in the Pinnacle Room of the Amway Grand. This effort may be duplicated in Kalamazoo and Southeast Michigan. V. Family Division- $85,570 in Gifts/Pledges to Date Michigan Campus Compact: Reports 100 percent staff participation in the campaign. Ed Blews, Barbara Mieras, Stanley Caine, Eric Gilbertson, Don Lubbers, and Juan Olivarez are in the process of contacting each MCC president regarding both personal and institutional gifts. It is expected this campaign will be completed by June 30th. Michigan Nonprofit Association: Reports 100 percent staff participation in the campaign. Ed Blews, Justin King and Anne Rosewarne are in the process of contacting MNA Board members about the opportunity to support the CMA Campaign. To date, 100 percent of the Executive Committee is participating. This campaign will be completed by June 30th. Michigan Community Service Commission: The staff campaign reports 55 percent participation to date. Terry Pruitt is contacting Commissioners about the opportunity to support the CMA Campaign. Both campaigns are expected to be completed by June 30th. Volunteer Centers of Michigan: Reports 100 percent staff participation. Kathy Rossow, Nonie Brennan and Judy Tymowicz are coordinating the VCM Operating Council campaign. This campaign is expected to be completed by June 30th. Organizations: Ed Blews, President of the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Michigan, recently announced a $10,000 pledge to the ConnectMichigan Alliance Campaign. Ira Strumwasser, Executive Director and CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation, announced a $10,000 pledge to the campaign. We look forward to continued success!
