Priority schools that are implementing in the 2012-2013 school year or will implement in the 2013-2014 school year interventions aligned with the ESEA flexibility turnaround principles. Grants will fund projects that serve eligible schools not currently served by a national service program (e.g., AmeriCorps State and National, Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA), Foster Grandparents, etc.), or will support expansion and better coordination of existing national service activities in those schools. All projects funded under this Notice are expected to improve student academic performance, academic engagement, attendance outcomes, or some combination thereof, in eligible schools Grants will fund projects that address multiple student needs and are aligned with comprehensive school turnaround plans. All grants must include one or more of the following: • Providing ongoing mechanisms for family and community engagement. • Establishing a school culture and environment that improve school safety, attendance, and discipline and address other non-academic factors that impact student achievement, such as students ' social, emotional, and health needs. • Accelerating students' acquisition of reading and mathematics knowledge and skills; • Increasing graduation rates through strategies such as early warning systems, credit-recovery programs, andre-engagement strategies. • Increasing college enrollment rates through college preparation counseling assistance to include completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and college applications, and educating students and their families on financial literacy for college; or • Supporting school implementation of increased learning time. Applicants are also required to use standardized, priority education performance measures. Given the narrow focus of funding, the MCSC conducted targeted outreach to eligible applicants and provided extensive one-on-one technical assistance with interested organizations. While there was broad interest in the opportunity, the MCSC received one (1) application for the School Turnaround AmeriCorps competition. This applicant is considered "new" and is not a current grantees of the MCSC or CNCS. Four AmeriCorps members will be placed at each of the six schools and serve as academic coaches, providing both individual and family coaching; organizing parent/student academic and college nights ; and, conducting workshops on graduation requirements, ACT preparation, college selection, and completing FAFSA and college entrance exams. Members will serve at least 6,000 students and families . Program outcomes will include: over 2,500 students graduating from high school on time; an increase in the average ACT scores across the six schools from 13 .7 to 15 .2; over 2, 700 students will complete FAFSA applications; and, over 2,600 students will emoll in college. It increases the capacity and infrastructure of organizations to more effectively engage volunteers, including those from specific population groups such as youth, adults' age 55 years and older and highly-skilled volunteers. Days of Service The Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC), Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA), Volunteer Centers of Michigan (VCM), The League Michigan, and Michigan Campus Compact (MiCC), with support from Youth Service America and the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), announced the distribution of more than $10,000 in mini-grant funds to support 2013 Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) projects across the state. Thanks to these mini-grants, hundreds of Michigan youth will lend their considerable resources to addressing critical issues in their communities this April. Twenty-eight organizations from across Michigan received the funds to coordinate service projects that tackle critical challenges in their communities; including education, economic opportunity, health, clean energy and environmental stewardship, hunger, homelessness, and public safety. Grants range in value from $87 to $500. Global Youth Service Day is an annual volunteer event that celebrates and mobilizes the millions of children and youth who improve their communities each day through service and service-learning. The official dates of 2013 GYSD are April 26, 27, and 28, but many projects will occur outside of those dates . There are currently 76 registered projects in th e state . Reimaging Service Reimagining Service is a national, multi-sector coalition dedicated to increasing social impact through effective volu nteer engagement. It seeks to increase the impact of volunteers through : practice, research, and funding . The Michigan Partners continue to meet and work on bringing the Reimaging Service Initiative to our state sometime in the fall of 2013. The Points of Light has released a request for proposal that the partners are working to respond to . The application is due May 3, 2013, with selected pilot sites notified by May 17, 2013 . If selected, Michigan would participate in a kick-off meeting in Washington, D.C. during the National Conference on Volunteering and Service held June 19-22, 2013. The partners are excited about the potential of being one of eight pilot sites selected. Statewide Public Relations Campaign on Volunteerism One component of the work funded through the Volunteer Generation Fund, is a statewide campaign focused on increasing public awareness for service and volunteering. In order to accomplish this, the MCSC, with their key partners (MNA, VCM, MiCC, CNCS and The LEAGUE Michigan) has engaged a local public relations firm , Redhead Design Stud io (Redhead) . Redhead will help craft a campaign to meet the goal of greater exposure and local impact that service and volunteering has on local communities and in the state as a whole. Account representatives from Redhead will be provide a presentation at the April 24, 2013 MCSC Board meeting . Michigan Civic Health Index The MCSC, in partnership with MNA, VCM, CNCS, MiCC, The LEAGUE Michigan, and the Council of Michigan Foundations, will unveil the first-ever Michigan Civic Health Index at the 2013 Giving and Volunteering Celebration on April 24, 2013 . The report summarizes how Michiganders are engaged in civic activities such as volunteerism and philanthropy. Through national service and volunteering, Americans from all walks of life contribute to their communities and the nation. Today's social and economic challenges are complex and require comprehensive, integrated and innovative approaches to shape solutions that work. Engaged citizens are at the center of these solutions. The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) empowers and supports Americans to tackle persistent challenges such as helping youth succeed in school, securing safe affordable housing for economically disadvantaged families, or helping communities respond to disasters. Through this work, CNCS achieves its mission of improving lives, strengthening communities and fortifying the civic health of our nation . . CNCS, a fe deral agency, brings leadership, resources, coordination , focus, and scale to America's voluntary sector. Our programs unite the passion, commitment and talent of participants with the assets of community organizations and the funding from public and private sectors to build enduring community capacity to solve problems. CNCS supports a network of state service commissions, intermediary organizations, grantees and sponsors (the national service network) through which millions of Americans help the most vulnerable citizens, improve their neighborhoods, and transform their own lives. As a result of the network, citizen-centered solutions take root, are sustained, and transform communities and the nation. For more than 45 years, successive Administrations of both parties have made investments in national service to engage citizens in solving problems and build the 2 capacity of America's voluntary sector. Sixteen years ago, Congress created CNCS to engage Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service to meet pressing national and community needs, based on common-sense principles of local control, competition, accountability, leveraging of non-federal resources, and public-private partnership. Through AmeriCorps, Learn and Serve America, Senior Corps and our other programs and activities, five million Americans serve with nearly 70,000 organizations in the national service network. These organizations use national . service.resources to develop innovative solutions across a broad spectrum of issues. In recognition of this successful foundation, Congress in 2009 passed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act (Serve America Act) to bring national servi.ce to ... higher levels of impact, innovation and effectiveness. This landmark law, which passed with strong bipartisan support, is an inflection point for CNCS and the foundation for our Strategic Plan. The law directs CNCS to expand opportunities to serve, build the capacity of individuals, nonprofits and communities, and encourage innovative approaches to addressing community challenges. The law puts a strong emphasis on focusingnational service on a core set of priority issue areas and measuring the impact of service, and this directive is a guiding force for our Strategic Plan. We have an opportunity to leverage the effective programs of the national service network to drive toward a specific set of results on critical national issues. These meetings will include an updates on issues and resources impacting the mentoring field as well as customized workshops, networking opportunities, and trainings based on the needs of the region. Regional Meeting Schedule: Marquette- October 3rd Detroit (Southfield) - October 1oth Grand Rapids (Grandville)- October 24th Gaylord- October 29th Flint- October 30th The Providers Council is leading the planning efforts for these meetings. These regional meetings will take the place of the annual statewide men to ring conference. The next statewide mentoring conference will be held in the fall of2014 and we will be moving to hosting the conference on an ,every-other~year basis. We also plan to continue to host the regional meetings on the off years of the statewide conference. Coaches Challenge Each year, in an effort to help close the-gap, the head football coaches from universities within Kansas, Iowa, and Nebraska have issued a friendly challenge to see which state can recruit the most new mentors. This year, the challenge wjll be reinstated with two exciting new additions joining the efforts: the Mentoring Partnership of Minnesota and Mentor Michigan. Leading the Coaches ' Challenge efforts in partnership with Mentor Michigan is former University of Michigan Head Football Coach Lloyd Carr. Together, Coach Carr and Mentor Michigan will use the Coaches Challenges to recruit new mentors to serve Michigan youth by partnering with local mentoring organizations to host various mentor recruitment events across the state during college football season. The Coaches ' Challenge will kick off on August 1, 2013 . Any new mentor application that is received between August 1 and November 30, 2013 will count toward the "score" of the respective state. Football fans who take the Coaches ~ Challenge will notonJy,shewtheiF state pride, but by signing ·upto be a meator, they will be making the difference of a lifetime by helping to improve the life of a child. The overall winner of the 2013 "Coaches Mentoring Challenge" will be announced the week of December 13th. Quality Based Mentoring Svstem -The Quality Based Mentorir-tg -System pr:o¥id€s mentoring programs with ir-ttensive support and technical assistance to improve their program, provide higher-quality services, and serve more mentors and youth. Mentor Michigan is piloting this initiative with Bethany Christian Services, VIP Mentoring, and MSU Extension Tech Wizards. The conference was open to AmeriCorps program staff, Senior Corps program staff, State Commission staff, and Volunteer Centers. In addition to the MCSC staff, ten Michigan ' s AmeriCorps program directors attended the event. The collective goal of this event was to strengthen Commission and national service partnerships by celebrating successes, sharing strategies, and discussing innovative solutions that maximize our ability to c-ollectively impact communities through service and volunteerism . In addition to keynote speakers, professional development workshops, and networking, the conference provided an opportunity to dialogue with Bill Basi, who is the director of AmeriCorps at the Corporation for National and Community Service. 2014-2015 Michigan's AmeriCorps Program Application and Outreach Process In an effort to promote the 2014-2015 Michigan ' s AmeriCorps application process, the MCSC will be hosting a new applicant information session in Lansing on September 10, as well as an informational webinar on September 5. These sessions will provide a general overview of AmeriCorps, the key elements of successful AmeriCorps programs, an opportunity to explore how AmeriCorps may address issues in a community, and how to apply for funding. The concept paper guidelines were made available earlier this month and applications will be due October 4. AmeriCorps National Grantee Meeting Ginna Holmes and Jeanine Yard will be attending the National AmeriCorps Grantee Meeting in Washington, DC September 17-19, 2013 . The National Grantee Meeting provides an opportunity for AmeriCorps State and National Grantees to gain an understanding of the priorities of the leadership of the Corporation for National and Community Service, develop strategies for implementing new priorities, enhance skills required for implementation, and strengthen relationships between state, national and CNCS colleagues. 20 1h Anniversary of AmeriCorps September 2013 marks the 20th anniversary of AmeriCorps, when President Clinton signed the National and Community Service Trust Act, establishing the Corporation for National and Community Service and bringing a full range of domestic community service programs under the umbrella of one central organization. The 20th anniversary of AmeriCorps members being sworn in is September of2014. The Corporation for National and Community Service plans to kick off the 20th Anniversary this September and do a year-long celebration with monthly activities, which will culminate in a nationwide simultaneous swearing-in of members in September 2014. 2013-2014 Michigan's AmeriCorps Program Preparation In preparation for a successful2013-2014 program year, the MCSC will be providing the following trainings to Michigan ' s AmeriCorps programs: • Program Director/Organizational Leader Meeting: On September 26, Michigan ' s AmeriCorps program directors and organizational leaders will come together from 9:00am-12:00pm to network, explore opportunities for collaboration, and learn about national funding priorities of the Corporation for National and Community Service. The meeting will also include information about how to integrate __ AmeriCorps into the_culture of their organizations and appropriate ways to advocate for national service. From 12:00-4:00pm, the "new" Michigan ' s AmeriCorps Program Directors (those who have �• been in their position for two years or less) will continue to meet to review AmeriCorps 101 topics, have their quest!~ns answered, and !earn about resources for.program man:!gement. AmeriCorps Program Financial Training: On September 5, the MCSC will host a webinar for program staff who are responsible for the financial oversight of their AmeriCorps grant. The session will include information about the web-based reporting system, as well as an overview of deadlines and expectations for the 2013-14 program year. Michigan's AineriCorps Member Celebration This year' s Celebration will be held on Thursday, November 21 , from 9:30 a.m.-4:30p.m. at the Lansing Center. The goal of this event is to celebrate the commitment AmeriCorps members make to service, and to empower them to create and fulfill their own visions of a positive year full of changes for self and community. The Celebration has become a great tradition, gathering AmeriCorps members from all over the state of Michigan for a day of training, networking, and recognition. Background The MCSC is the state's lead agency on volunteerism . In its 22 year history, the 'M CSC has invested more than $100 million in volunteer initiatives, leveraged $85 million in local funds , enlisted 24,00Q state residents in 29 million hours of AmeriCorps service , and engaged more than one million people in volunteerism. This is accomplished through the MCSC 's four signature programs: Michigan 's AmeriCorps , Mentor Michigan, Volunteer Michigan , and the Governor's Service Awards . The MCSC administers federal funds for these programs , granted by the Corporation for National and Community Service, and is part of the Michigan Department of Human Services. Michigan Reading Corps- Ginna Holmes thanked Commissioner Campbell for his ., .. . leadership with Michigan.Reading Corps. The.MCS.C had submitted the program for supplemental funding for 75 members. The program was not funded by the CNCS for competitive funding. The MCSC staff is recommending funding the program with formula funds. The current budget includes $444,622 from CNCS and $370,646 for match funds. During this pilot year there will be 39 members with 30 members starting in the fall and an additional 9 members starting in January. Recruitment has begun and will continue over the next month. The school sites are being determined based on capacity issues with the following districts being considered: Detroit, Pontiac, Grand Rapids, Godwin Heights, Godfrey-Lee, Kalkaska, Muskegon, Jackson, and Lansing. The program originally was going to be funded through the Heart of West Michigan United Way but will be transitioned over and the Hope Network will serve as the fiduciary and will provide office space, equipment, and manage the financial aspects of the grant. IV . AmeriCorps Formula Funding- Ms. Holmes thanked MCSC staff for their work in finalizing the grants for formula funding. Ben Gulker presented the staff recommendations to Commissioners (see memo from Ginna Holmes dated June 26, 2013). The MCSC received $2,957,099 in competitive funding. The CNCS has created a speciaLgrant for Governor/Mayor initiatives. The MCSC has worked with Harvey Hollins from the Governor' s Office and Wayne State University Urban Safety Program to replicate the program as a Governor initiative. The program was selected as one of eight Governor's initiative programs and will expand the current program to three additional neighborhoods. The 2013-14 formula allocation for Michigan is $3 ,185,940. Additionally $133,000 in unobligated funds were available. Chair Bloodworth asked for a motion to approve the staff recommendations for the AmeriCorps formula funding. Commissioner Algra motioned to approve the staff recommendations; Commissioner Williamson seconded the motion. Welcome and Introductions- Chair Bloodworth convened Commissioners at 12:35 pm. There was discussion on the CNCS ' s six priority areas for MCSC/AmeriCorps programming. It was discussed whether the MCSC should focus on three top priorities around funding: economic opportunity/jobs, health, and education. The MCSC will continue to focus on the six priority areas due to funding opportunities with CNCS. Michigan's State Service Plan will also direct the MCSC's priorities. II. Consent Agenda - Chair Bloodworth asked for a motion to approve the consent agenda and the minutes from the June 26, 2013 MCSC board meeting. Commissioner Hill · motioned to approve the consent agenda and minutes; Commissioner Algra seconded motion. The motion passed unanimously. III. Other Business Mission Statement Revision: Commissioners have been working on a new MCSC mission statement. A revised statement was approved as follows: The Michigan Community Service Commission utilizes service as a strategy to address the state's most pressing issues and empowers volunteers to strengthen communities. Chair Bloodworth asked for a motion to approve the revised mission statement. Commissioner Lavoie motioned to approve the revised MCSC mission statement; Commissioner Algra seconded motion. The motion passed unanimously. State Service Plan: Ginna Holmes presented the State Service Plan. This plan will go to Governor Snyder for approval and then sent to the Corporation for National & Community Service (CNCS). Chair Bloodworth asked for a motion to approve the State Service Plan. Commissioner Algra motioned to approve the State Service Plan; Commissioner Truscott seconded motion. The motion passed unanimously. Creation of Advisory Work Teams: Ginna Holmes explained the need for Commissioner Work Teams which will include Advocacy and Public Policy, Resource and Fund Development, MI Reading Corps, Volunteer Michigan, Mentor Michigan!Youth Development, and Social Innovation. Chair Bloodworth asked for a motion to support creation of Commissioner Work Teams. Commissioner Lavoie motioned to approve the State Service Plan; Commissioner Collier seconded motion. The motion passed unanimously. IV. Executive Directors Report Volunteer Generation Fund- Bob Kahle provided information and context on the Volunteer Generation Fund. He shared the goal of Volunteer Michigan, the key components of service as a strategy, the essential building blocks of volunteer connector organizations, volunteer engagement, HandsOn Connect and the challenges of the technology, and other challenges within Volunteer Centers. He also distributed infographics for Volunteer Kalamazoo Neighborhood Safety Initiative and the Volunteer Medical Corps in Allegan County: 2 �Volunteer Generation Fund FY14 Grant Ginna Holmes explained that only past Commissions that received funding in last grant cycle were able to submit an application for the FY14 VGF grant and required applicants request at least $100,000 and provide a dollar for dollar match. The total amount available was $3.7 million. The MCSC requested $262,500 and will focus on youth development. The MCSC will find out the end of September ifthe funding request was approved and the program start date is October 1. V. Governor's Service Awards - Ginna Holmes recommended alternating the event between Grand Rapids and Detroit each year. Commissioners agreed to alternating the event between Grand Rapids and Detroit. Chair Bloodworth thanked Commissioners for their support of the event and for attending. It demonstrates a great commitment from Commissioners. VI. CNCS Funding Update- Ginna Holmes shared a chart outlining the President's FY14 funding for CNCS. VII . CNCS State Office Update- Cathy Sharp explained that CNCS is working on interagency agreements around key issues including Affordable Care Act. They will fund two VISTA programs in Michigan (Oakland/Livingston County and Wayne County). Eight VISTA members will serve at Community Action Agencies in these areas to help organize activities to share information with those that need it around the Affordable Care Act. RSVP programs will have volunteers do outreach in their communities and help enroll residents. Senior Corps has funding available and will supplement these two programs. The RSVP volunteers will start October 1 at the Community Action Agencies and will be trained as certified application counselors. There is a six month timeframe to share the information and enroll the individuals. RSVP competitive grants are due on September 10 and Cathy thanked Commissioners for promoting this program. Cathy is also working with a number of federal agencies, including Jed Hermann from the White House Office of Cabinet Affairs, to talk about the crisis in Detroit and identify what federal agencies that have services in Detroit can do to help support nonprofit agencies. CNCS Michigan Office may be adding more VISTA members to projects in Detroit to assist with this effort. X. Public Comment - Chair Bloodworth announced that Commissioner Rob Collier will receive the Outstanding State Commissioner award by America's Service Commission at a reception on September 16 in Washington, DC. Coaches Challenge- Michigan will join Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, and Minnesota in the Coaches Challenge to recruit new mentors and expand awareness of how to volunteer as a mentor. Coach Carr will lead the effort in Michigan as part of this friendly competition. 2. Media Campaign - Utilize "ready to use' materials created by Redhead Design firm. Webinars and technical assistance will be offered to assist programs in using the materials. 3. 4-H "Life's Little Questions" Recruitment Campaign -Targeted recruitment messages and tools with the target of expanding the total number of state volunteers beyond current levels. (5,000 volunteers) . 4-H has youth programs in 81 out of the 83 counties. The program is designed to help children and youth develop skill and assets to be successful. 4. HandsOn Connect- The effort will assist programs with registering in the state portal (including the 250 mentor programs and 4-H programs) . The result will be a streamlined search process allowing potential volunteers to use one of the 24 volunteer centers or the state portal to access volunteer opportunities with program partners. 5. VIP Mentoring Program Business Challenge- New program launched to help improve graduation rates at Denby High School and other EAA/Pathways schools. The challenge aims to enlist at least 30 new businesses for 2013-14 to encourage volunte.er.s to work one-on-one ..with.stude.nts as mentors and to financially support program effor.ts . 6. Quality Based Mentoring - Mentor Michigan will launch a pilot QBM process with three programs. It increases the capacity and infrastructure of organi zations to more effectively engage volunteers, including those from specific population groups such as youth, adults' age 55 years and older and highly-skilled volunteers . Days of Service The Michigan .Community Service Commission .(MCSC), . Mi.chiga n.Nonprofit.Association (MNA), Volunteer Centers of Michigan (VCM), The League Michigan, and Michigan Campus Compact (MiCC), with support from Youth Service America and the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), announced the distribution of more than $10,000 in mini-grant funds to support 2013 Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) projects across the state . Grants ranged in value from $87 to $500 and were distributed to 28 organizations across Michigan. As a result of the grant funding, youth throughout Michigan were provided an opportunity to lend their considerable resources to addressing critical issues including education, economic opportunity, health, clean energy and environmental stewardship, hunger, homelessness, and public safety. Through the mini-gr.ants and other outreach efforts, more than 3,700 volunteers engaged in service on GYSD, providing almost 10,000 hours of their time . Of those volunteers, 2,800 were youth volunteers. Similarly, the Michigan Days of Service partners will support 281ocal projects with mini-grants this September in honor of the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance . These funds will engage or serve veterans and military families and are supported by CNCS and the Connect Michigan Alliance Endowment. Funds granted out total $8,800 and are anticipated to mobilize 2,000 volunteers. Reimaging Service Reimagining Service is a national, multi-sector coalition dedicated to increasing social impact through effective volunteer engagement. It seeks to increase the impact of volunteers through practice, research , and funding. The Michigan partners are happy to report that we were selected as one of 10 national pilot sites for this cutting edge work. Our submission included a volunteer center as our local partner, and we will be working with Volunteer Kalamazoo as this affil iate f ield partner. We participated in the kick-off meeting in Washington, D.C. during the National Conference on Volunteering and Service, held June 19-22, 2013, and it was great to meet the other grant ees from around the country. Later this fall, all the pilot sites will be attending a multi-day train-the-trainer event in the tnid -west. Statewide Public Relations Campaign on Volunteerism One component of the work funded through the Volunteer Generation Fund is a statewide campaign focused on increasing public awareness for service and volunteering. Together with their partners (MNA, VCM, MiCC, CNCS and The LEAGUE Michigan), the MCSC has engaged Redhead Design Studio to help craft a campaign to meet the goal of greater exposure and local impact that service and volunteering has oh local communities"and in the state as a whole . Originally slated to launch this summer, we have strategically decided to slow our work in this area in light of the launch ofthe Governor' s " Do Something" campaign . As a result, our strategy and roll-out plan is still in development. However, Redhead and the partners have decided on a creative design concept that we plan to share at the next board meeting . �Volunteer Michigan Sub-grantees V'!e have entered our f.i r. 3!-year of the three year grant and our t\AJe!ve sub-grante es ~cnt i nue to \.AJcrk tovJard their program goals . This late spring and summer, we hosted both a one-day grantee meeting in Lansing and a conference call to engage our grantees in the sharing of program best practices and plans for future integration of their work in their ongoing center operations. Our grant evaluator, Robert Kahle, has been conducting sites visits and is assisting our six large sub-grantees in finalizing their logic models and info-graphics as a way to both chart their progress and tell their story in a more attention focus manner. Volunteer Michigan Statewide Portal Launched publically at the Giving and Volunteering Celebration in April, the statewide volunteer portal continues to grow in use both by volunteers and the nonprofit community. Since going public, the site has been visited 1,168 times by 778 unique visitors who viewed a total of 3,224 pages. During this introductory stage, we continue to make improvements to the site to increase its usability and functionality for t~e statewide audience. In addition, we are developing an outreach and communications plan for the nonprofit community that will help to populate the available opportunities in underrepresented areas . SENIOR CORPS NEWS • The first phase of the RSVP Competitive process of peer reviews and ratings has been completed on a national level. All of the Ml Field Office Staff participated in these reviews . Final selection process is ongoing at CNCS Headquarters with awards expected in March 2014 for April1 and July 1 start dates. • The RSVP projects sponsored by Catholic Social Services of Wayne County and Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan are partnering with Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency and Oakland Livingston Human Services Agency to provide outreach in those communities regarding the Affordable Care Act and other benefits. RSVP volunteers are being trained as Certified Application Counselors and w ill be able to provide valuable health care access information to the citizens in Oakland, Livingston and Wayne counties. VISTA NEWS • I am pleased to announce the addition of 6 VISTAs to the Michigan Non-Profit Association VISTA Program grant. These 6 new VISTAs will begin their service in February 2014 specifically for the purpose of supporting the Detroit Metropolitan Partnership to assist with the revitalizat ion of Detroit mainly in the area of workforce development. • The CNCS Field Office plans to hold a Request for Concept Papers (RFCP) for new VISTA sponsors in Spring 2014, contingent upon the final FY14 appropriations. More information to come on the RFCP at our next meeting. • As AmeriCorps will be celebrating their 201h Anniversary in 2014, VISTA will be celebrating their 50 h Ann iversary in January 2015. Previous to this, he was the president and CEO of the Michigan Nonprofit Association, a statewide membership nonprofit focused on serving nonprofits to advance their missions. Prior to leading MNA, Kyle served as the president and CEO of the ConnectMichigan Alliance (CMA), a statewide organization focused on promoting and strengthening a lifelong ethic of service and civic engagement through the support of community-building initiatives. CMA merged with MNA in 2007. Kyle has worked in the private and public sectors including serving both Michigan Governors Engler and Granholm as the executive director of the Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC). Prior to his time at the MCSC, he was director of corporate and foundation relations at Olivet College, a small liberal arts college with a mission of "Individual and Social Responsibility". Kyle serves on a number of boards and committees including the National Council of Non profits, Independent Sector, Points of Light, Nonprofit Voter Engagement Network Leadership Council , Michigan Association of United Ways , Council of Michigan Foundations Public Policy Committee, and Starr Commonwealth, which he currently chairs . Katharine Janes Katharine Janes is a senior at Sacred Heart Academy , where she maintains a 4.0 GPA. She is involved in many community activities, including president of the Youth Advisory Committee at the Mount Pleasant Area Community Foundation, board member of the LEAGUE Michigan Commission at the Michigan Nonprofit Association , and past co-chair of the Michigan Community Foundations' Youth Project Committee at the Council of Michigan Foundations. She volunteers as an individual tutor at Sacred Heart Academy, acts as an ACT prep tutor for juniors in high school , and has recorded over 857 hours of community service. She is dually enrolled at Mid-Michigan Community College, and is anticipating graduation from Sacred Heart Academy in June 2014. �Peter Lemmer Peter Lemmer is senior vice president and chief legal counsel for Greenstone Farm Credit Services. He has more than 25 years of experience as an attorney, including more than 20 years in the position of chief legal counsel. He is an active member of the Michigan Bar Association and American Corporate Counsel Association . He was recently presented with the prestigious Phelps-Martin Award for Community Service for his volunteer work with local youth and refugee groups. Mr. Lemmer attended the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado, earned a degree from Villanova University in Pennsylvania and earned a degree from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School. Kristen Lingenfelter Kristen Lingenfelter, of Brighton , works at Lingenfelter Motors ports, a licensed dealer that buys and sells rare performance and collectors' cars. Each month , Lingenfelter Motorsports hosts or takes part in a charity event to support local people, clubs , foundations , and charities. Additionally, Ms. Lingenfelter remains active with many nonprofit organizations in Michigan , manages the Lingenfelter Foundation , and is an advocate for the Alzheimer's Association . She also serves as the Ambassador to Congressman Mike Rogers' office. In 2012, she was recognized by Crain 's Detroit Business as one of 60 distinguished volunteers of the year. The plan will need to focus on the six priority areas and is due in February. There may be a new round of sequestration cuts in January. Miles Wilson Johnson Center for Philanthropy New MCSC Board Members The Governor' s Office announce the appointments for the MCSC in October. We have four new Commissioners: Kyle Caldwell, Peter Lemmer, Katharine Janes, and Kristen Lingenfelter. Governor 's Press Conference - AmeriCorps The Governor will hold a press conference on November 41h to announce the AmeriCorps Governor and Mayor Initiative Urban Safety Corps. Commissioners are invited to the press conference. CNCS CEO Wendy Spencer will be coming �. to the press conference. There will be a Commissioner round table discussion with Wendy following the press conference. MI Reading Corps Ms. Holmes gave an update on MI Reading Corps. They currently have 24 members and are working on additional members for placement in January. Hope Network has been serving as the fiduciary for the program for this program year and has agreed to serve as the managing partner for the next program year. A recommendation will be presented at the next board meeting for board approval on Hope Network becoming the managing partner for MI Reading Corps. An Advisory Committee will be established to assist with expansion of the program. MCSC Board Meeting- November 21 Commissioners discussed the November board meeting agenda. Board packets will be sent out electronically prior to the meeting.
