Chairman Mulhern welcomed Musette Michael, the new MCSC Executive Director, to the meeting. He gave background on Musette. She served as an assistant attorney general under both Frank J. Kelley and Governor Granholm and 1 �recently served as a deputy director at DHS. He also thanked Paula VanDam for serving as the Acting Executive Director since last July, and commended her for handling the duties with tremendous intelligence, grace, and creativity. Musette Michael summarized her background. She thanked the Governor and First Gentleman for giving her the opportunity to have an impact on Michigan and its children. With the MCSC now located within the Depatiment of Human Services, a whole range of opportunities for volunteer services have opened up. She described the work of the Family Resource Centers which are located in school buildings. They have an assigned DHS caseworker and community resources available to the families of children that are attending the school. This allows a great opportunity for people to be involved in community service. The Cities of Promise also offer an oppmiunity for MCSC involvement when looking at grant sites. A third area for the MCSC involvement is in the effort to assist youth aging out of foster care. This partnership is already in the works. A website for these youth to use when looking for resources is also in the works. These children will have the opportunity to be com1ected with a caring adult or organization so that they can succeed. Musette shared that it is exciting to be joining the MCSC at this time because of the wide range of volunteer opportunities. There is also a growing population of available volunteers - the baby boomers. Paula VanDam will be working with organizations to engage this population. She also shared that the legislature has not been very kind to DHS and stressed the importance of educating the legislators to let them know the value of community service. Chairman Mulhern gave an update on the state budget. There was discussion about volunteer organizations being able to provide some of the services that are subject to cuts. Commissioner Whipple stressed the importance of making voltmteerism more effective. Commissioner Collier shared information about an effort that will be launched in May and start up in the fall to engage 10,000 Michigan citizens in a process designed to facilitate Michigan's economic transforn1ation. Phil Powers has a leadership role in this effort. Mr. Collier suggested inviting Mr. Powers to the next commission meeting to brief us on this effmi since it will be a vohmteer driven effort. II. Review and Approval ofFebruary 21, 2007 Minutes - Chairman Dan Mulhern Chairman Mulhern asked for a motion to approve the minutes from the February 21, 2007 board meeting. Commissioner Pardoe moved to approve the Minutes; Commissioner Collier seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. III. Standing Committee Reports - Chairman Dan Mulhern A. The commissioners reviewed Executive Committee meeting minutes from March 16, 2007. Chairman Mulhern asked for a motion to support the minutes, Commissioner Mawby moved to approve the minutes, and Commissioner Collier seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. 2 �IV. Executive Director's Report A. Mentor Michigan 1. Male Recruitment Challenge Update - Paula VanDam gave an update on the challenge for National Mentoring Month. The MCSC engaged 32 mentoring organizations who participated in the challenge. It was a contest to recruit male mentors in January. We found that 32 organizations recruited almost 300 new mentors during the month. Bob Kahle conducted interviews/focus groups with representatives from the 32 organizations to find out key lessons from the challenge. The general consensus was that it was successful and we should do it again next year. The organizations felt that having Dan be the public face during National Mentoring Month to create public awareness of mentoring helped them with their local recruitment efforts. This year the MCSC recognized two organizations, the one who recruited the most male mentors and the one who had the highest percentage recruitment of male mentors, with a $2,000 cash award. Mr. Kahle recommended that the MCSC repeat this incentive, but rather than the incentive be just about quantity, we create some additional categories (innovation, engaging more board members around recruitment of male mentors, etc.) around broader goals. We discussed whether it might be more effective to move the timing (possibly summertime) ofthe challenge from January as many school-based mentoring programs aren't recruiting in January. This would also create activity twice a year around mentor recruitment. 2. W.K. Kellogg Foundation- Ms. VanDam shared that the MCSC received a $360,000 two-year grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation that will help the MCSC move the men in mentoring initiative forward and allow more corporate engagement around mentoring. This funding will provide resources to support the work Michigan Campus Compact has been doing in increasing the number of mentors from higher education institutions with a specific emphasis around engaging more men. The MCSC will also develop some media partnerships to talk about the recruitment of male mentors on an ongoing basis. Ms. VanDam thanked Commissioner Chris Kwak for all the work she did in helping with the grant. Kyle Caldwell noted that the MCSC has also received funding from Hudson Webber, John Hancock, and now Kellogg Foundation to support Mentor Michigan. Ms. VanDam explained that in the past $50,000 of the $250,000 VIG monies supported Mentor Michigan. That money was granted to CMA to offset the staffing cost for Mentor Michigan. We are not able to fund any new grants that relate to the general fund dollars so we will not be able to access that $50,000 from the FY07 budget to support Mentor Michigan. The MCSC is also beginning conversations with Hudson Webber about the next phase of funding. They are interested in continuing funding. The MCSC will submit a funding proposal in September with a decision expected from them in December. 3. Father's Day Initiative- Chairman Mulhem shared an idea around Mentor Michigan and Father's Day. Many kids are without a dad to give a tie to for 3 �Father's Day. He suggested getting a merchandiser (Macy's, Meijer, etc.) to do a campaign around Father's Day; when someone purchases a tie, a portion would go to Mentor Michigan to support the recruitment of mentors for those kids or families that don ' t have a dad in the household . Another suggestion was to get ties from YIPs (Bill Ford, Joe Dumars, Rick Wagner, etc) and auction them off along with having a retail piece. Commissioner Lawson offered to chair a subcommittee to look into this irutiative. 4. Mentoring Conference - Ms. VanDam gave an update on the Mento ring Conference which will be held on October 24 in Lansing. David Eisner, CEO of CNCS, will be a keynote speaker. The second keynote is DeVone Boggan from Lansing. Some Providers Council members have heard him speak at national conference, and indicate he is a dynamic speaker who will bring mentoring expertise to the conference. Trainers will also come from the National Mentor Partnership. Kyle Caldwell suggested with the enormous success of last year's conference, it may be worthwhile to get sponsors for the annual conference. This will help with sustainability of Mentor Michigan. Ms. VanDam shared that staff has had that conversation and will also look at adjusting the rates for the conference to help cover the costs and possibly be a revenue generator. Past policy has been to focus corporate sponsorships on GSA; we need to consider whether some corporations are a better fit for Mentor Michigan. Commissioner Lawson also suggested looking at the depth of the conference and possibly inviting Northern Ohio and Canada to participate. 5. Mentoring Sustainability Training- The MCSC was able to leverage national trainers to come to Michigan June 27 and 28 for sustainability training for mentoring organizations. As Bob Kahle has presented from the census data, there is a need to work with mentoring organizations to strengthen their fundraising capacity. 6. Mentor Michigan VISTAs- Ms. VanDam explained that the MCSC is working with Evan Albert to expand the current Mentor Michigan VISTA program. The primary focus in the past few years has been to develop local mentoring collaboratives and help expand mentoring in community-wide. The MCSC intends to expand the scope of these mentoring programs to include engaging mentors for kids in foster care or kids aging out of foster care, and will include mentoring programs interested in developing mentoring for kids with an incarcerated parent. Evan Albert has also agreed to place two VISTAs at the MCSC to assist Amber Reiss in Mentor Michigan operations. One will serve as an outreach person to focus on higher education, men in mentoring, and supporting collaboratives. The other position will focus on initiatives for kids aging out of foster care, kids with incarcerated parents, and developing resources for programs wanting to develop in these areas. 4 �B. National Service Update 1. AmeriCorps Week (May 13-20)- Ms. VanDam shared that this is the first ever CNCS National AmeriCorps Week. The staffhas worked to have a very big and successful week. Many of the Michigan's AmeriCorps programs are working on local events. Legislators and funders will be the key audiences that the MCSC will work to educate around AmeriCorps. The MCSC will also target AmeriCorps Alums . The MCSC is creating a brochure to distribute to these groups, a video to show during the opening session at the Nonprofit Superconference (since it is during AmeriCorps Week), arranging for an AmeriCorps member to speak, and hosting an onsite service project at the Superconference. Representative Steve Tobocman is a former AmeriCorps member and has been asked to do a House Resolution on the floor in support of AmeriCorps Week. We will have 20 AmeriCorps members attend for the resolution. AmeriCorps programs will also schedule legislator visits that week. Chai1man Mulhem will participate in the Grand Rapids area event and will also interview an AmeriCorps member on his radio program to talk about service and leadership. Commissioners will be asked to present Govemor proclamations at local events. 2. Russ Mawby Signature Service Project- The project is scheduled for June 6th and ih and will take place in the Core City Neighborhood located in Detroit. Commissioners were asked to look at the list that was distributed for some ofthe supplies that are needed to see if they could assist (bottled water, transportation, lunch, snacks, etc). 3. National Service Reauthorization - Kyle Caldwell gave an update on Reauthorization. The Corporation and the programs it created (AmeriCorps, Leam and Serve) were established in 1993 and authorized for 5 years. The programs and funding have been operating without authorization since 1998. If funding and an appropriation are not allocated, we risk losing the support and the legal authority to run the progran1. Since 1998, there have been three attempts to get Congress to reauthorize the program. In 2002, Congressman Pete Hoekstra authored a bill that would reauthorize National Service but contained amendments that would have changed the face ofNational Service. State commissions were not in favor; however it was the first piece of legislation introduced that would reauthorize this program. In Febmary, several key stakeholders worked on an advisory committee for reauthorization. Mr. Caldwell represented state commissions on this committee. The committee drafted a letter of recommendations for the HHS oversight committee. Some of the highlights include providing additional authority to support state commissions, making AmeriCorps a traditional full time corps, authorizing more funding for Learn & Serve, and removing some red tape. The HHS oversight committee accepted these recommendations and will put them in the bill for reauthorization. There will be a vote in the House in late summer or early fall to reauthorize National Service for 3-5 years. 5 �C. Volunteer Investment Grant (VIG) Update- Ms. VanDam shared that the Governor issued directives based on the states' revenue shortages that will not allow us to provide a new grant to the Volunteer Investment Grant during the FY07 fiscal year. The VIG is currently in the Senate version of the FY08 budget. In the interim Diana Algra will review the initial proposals and make adjustments to the existing revenues so that they can continue to fund the grants to the new volunteer centers that were emerging and the expansion grants to those centers that wanted to expand the geographic area they are serving. D. State Budget Update for FY07 and FY08 - Garry Gross reviewed the handout explaining the Governor's directives and indicated impact for the MCSC. The directive that will have the biggest impact on the MCSC is the State Grant Expenditures. Some of the smaller ArneriCorps programs may be impacted more negatively than larger programs. Mr. Gross also distributed a handout outlining the FY08 MCSC Budget. E. Governor's Service Awards - Mary Grill gave an update on the Governor' s Service Awards and shared that $105,000 has been raised. There are several asks still out and we are waiting those responses. The commissioners were urged to continue their follow up as the money raised will be more important next year as the MCSC goes through the budget process. The Miracles will be the headliner for the event, which will be themed "The Miracle of Volunteering". This event is 100% paid for with private contributions. Chairman Mulhern thanked the committee for their hard work this year. E. State and National Volunteerism Reports - Mary Grill explained that the Commissioners received the Giving and Volunteering in Michigan brochure which is a product of a research partnership between MNA, CMA and Council of Michigan Foundations (CMF). In addition to this being released during National Volunteer Week, a national study from the CNCS was issued. The methodologies of the two studies are different, so the results were very different. The MCSC is using the CMF study to focus on Michigan's national ranking. Michigan is 1ih out of 50 states in the rate of volunteering. Ms. VanDam shared that the key points from these studies will be added to the talking points that the Commissioners will receive. F. ConnectMichigan Alliance I Michigan Nonprofit Association Merger Commissioner Lawson gave an update on the merger. The boards have voted and approved a merger. There will be a separate entity, the ConnectMichigan Alliance Endowment Advisory Committee, that will oversee the endowment and ensure that expenditures are in keeping with the intentions of the donors . CMA will dissolve as a nonprofit and become Michigan Nonprofit Association. The MCSC will have two seats on the CMA Endowment Advisory Committee (there will be 8 seats total) and one seat on the MNA board. The next MCSC Executive Committee meeting will decide who will fill these seats. Commissioner Mawby shared that everyone is excited by this process and the leadership with MNA and CMA to bring this about. They are confident this merger will benefit the nonprofit efforts in Michigan. The Executive 6 �Committee ofMNA indicated they are recommending to the full board ofMNA that Kyle Caldwell be the Executive Officer (President). Everyone involved with the process are delighted with the new leadership. Sam Singh will remain engagee with the transition process for a period of time. Commissioner Mawby asked Chairman Mulhern for a motion to give the MCSC Executive Committee authorization to name the member that will serve on the MNA Board and the two members that will serve on the CMA Endowment Advisory Committee. Commissioner Collier supported the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Due to lack of quorum, a packet will be sent out to Commissioners not present asking for their support. Mr. Caldwell clarified that the terms served have not been determined yet but that the Advisory Committee is not a permanent seat so the person will serve until replaced. The MNA board seat is a permanent seat (there will be 17 permanent seats including the MCSC seat) which means the MCSC will always have a seat on this board. The merger will be approved by the MNA board at their May board meeting and will become effective July 1, 2007 . CMA is the grantee organization for several national service programs. Mr. Caldwell explained all grant responsibilities will be transferred to MNA. V. Follow Up from Retreat A. Public Policy - Chairman Mulhern explained that with the change in leadership, it would be worthwhile to extend the goals established from the retreat from a 12-month period to an 18-month period to give Musette a chance to review the draft plans for both public policy and communication. An action plan for the next six months was presented so that Commissioners could see staff plans to move forward on some of the goals from the retreat. Ms. VanDam went through the public policy plan. Because of the recent funding cuts at both the federal and state levels, the staff recommended the board adopt resolutions related to both of those items. The first resolution asks the board to call for the restoration of funding for National Service programs to the FY04 levels. The second resolution is for the restoration of state funding for the MCSC and related programs (VIG) at the FY07 levels. Chairman Mulhern asked for a motion to support the two MCSC Board Resolutions. Commissioner Collier moved to support the resolutions. Commissioner Colaianne seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Due to lack of quorum, a packet will be sent out to Commissioners not present to get their approval. Ms. VanDam explained the financial situation at both the state and national levels have resulted in rapid activities requiring rapid responses. The MCSC staff requests commissioners authorization for MCSC to use their names as it relates to correspondence (sign on letters) to elected officials and the general public related to the above board resolutions . Commissioners do not need to add their organization names. Before the commissioners' names are added to 7 �any correspondence, the MCSC staff will present to the Public Policy Committee or the Executive Committee for approval. Ms. VanDam shared that the MCSC Annual Report will be going out to both state legislators and members of congress with an introduction letter from Musette Michael to help educate them on the work of the MCSC. Commissioners were also asked to fill out the yellow legislative contact form that was distributed to help the MCSC develop a calendar of when Commissioners are meeting with legislators and so that MCSC staff can provide them with information to share about the Commission. B. Communications Plan- Mary Grill reviewed the communications activities that will be happening over the next few months. The MCSC has been sending out monthly electronic newsletters that have been initiated this past year (monthly newsletter on Mentor Michigan and a bi-monthly newsletter on MCSC news in general). Commissioner Pardoe will be chairing the Communications Committee for the next few months and will be asking for Commissioner assistance on the committee. C. Baby Boomer Initiative - Paula VanDam explained that she held a meeting to discuss engaging baby boomers around volunteerism. Representatives from each of the areas that work with boomers attended. They discussed what is happening at the state and national levels, identified barriers, and what we can do as a Commission and collectively as a group. Boomers want a meaningful experience (they don't want to just stuff envelopes). Everyone felt the most value would be in building the capacity of nonprofits to engage these volunteers. The group felt that it is better to pick two or three key issue areas (mentoring, kids aging out of foster care, etc) and market those issues rather than a general volunteerism recruitment campaign. The group also liked the idea of developing a packet of materials to be included in retirement packets for both private and public sector retirees so that there is a piece in their retirement materials that talks about volunteering, how to connect in their local community, and what are volunteer opportunities. The MCSC staff will be exploring these initiatives and the resources needed for them and will report back to the Commissioners at the September meeting. D. DHS Priorities - Ms. VanDam explained that MCSC has been mapping out and matching where MCSC programs are located and where the DHS initiatives are located (Family Resource Centers, Cities of Promise). The MCSC will begin to strategically look at what two or three areas have the most overlap and the most opportunity to make an impact. The staff wanted Musette to have the opportunity to weigh in on this discussion before making recommendations. VI. We have known Musette from the days when the Governor served as Michigan's Attorney General, and she has been with the Department of Human Services for the past four years serving as one of Marianne Udow' s deputy directors. Her resume is attached which- gives further detail about her rich background in public service. I have no doubt that her vision and leadership will help move the work of the Commission to an even higher level. Musette will begin transitioning into her new role during the next few weeks, and I look forward to introducing her to you at the MCSC's April 27th meeting. Twenty-five commissioners appointed by the Governor serve on the Michigan Community Service Commission. The members of the Commission elect one member to serve as chair. It's inspiring to know that volunteerism and civic participation are near all-time highs especially at a time when our communities have so many demands for resources . Taking part in community service is one way to help meet the needs of our neighborhoods and the personal fulfillment can be priceless. Many people, especially the youth, believe they have the power to make a difference by volunteering. I am pleased to say that Michigan has a state agency, The Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC), which supports programs that encourage residents to volunteer. Volunteerism doesn't just happen - it requires resources. MCSC helps with volunteer recruitment, management, training, placement, and recognition. The agency helps community organizations to engage thousands of Michigan citizens in volunteer services. A great example of our work is <INSERT> that provides <INSERT WHAT IT DOES>. Michigan has an ideal quality of life and is recognized nationally because our citi zens believe so strongly in the value of service as a way of life. Michael, Executive Director DATE: June 11, 2007 RE: Summary of June 11, 2007 Executive Committee Meeting The following is a summary of the meeting of the Michigan Community Service Commission Executive Committee held via conference call on Monday, June 11 , 2007. The meeting was called to order at 10:05 a.m. Members present: Dan Mulhern, Rob Collier, Russ Maw by, and Kari Pardoe. Staff present: Musette Michael, Paula VanDam, Mark Mullaney and Janice Harvey. Russ Mawby Signature Service Project Paula VanDam gave a summary ofthe project which took place last week. There were 250 AmeriCorps members from programs around the state who participated. Wayne State University hosted the members for the Opening Ceremonies and also overnight accommodations. Service projects included clearing vacant lots, siding, landscaping, and painting sheds. It was a huge success. Mentor Michigan Update Paula VanDam shared that Meijer is offering Mentor Michigan $2.00 for every $25.00 gift card sold on Saturday, June 16, and Sunday, June 17. The proceeds will go to recruiting mentors. Dan Mulhern will have Mark Murray, Meijer CEO, on his radio program on Friday to promote it. Mr. Mulhern shared that he has spoken with National Mentor Partnership and they are excited about the idea "Ties that Bind" for a promotion next year (Father's Day) around mentoring. �Ms. VanDam also shared that Oprah Winfrey aired a show on May 31 st that focused on mentoring. The MCSC received a number of calls following the show with people interested in mentoring or looking for a mentor for a child. The MCSC is working with some of the local programs to track the number of calls they receive around the show. The show will reair on June 29th _ Governor's Service Awards Update The fundraising is going well. We have raised $180,000 and have some additional potential sponsors. The MCSC staff is working to distribute tickets to all organizations and nonprofits interested. MNAICMA Merger (Approval Item) The MCSC will need to select one representative to serve on the MNA board. Commissioners recommended that the Executive Director of the MCSC should serve as that representative. Commissioner Collier made a motion to approve this recommendation. Commissioner Mawby supported the motion. The motion passed unanimously. The MCSC will need to select two representatives to serve on the MNA Fund Advisory Committee. Staff recommended that Rob Collier and Janet Lawson serve as the representatives of this committee. Commissioner Mawby made a motion to approve this recommendation. Commissioner Pardoe supported the motion. The motion passed unanimously with Commissioner Collier abstaining. Chairman Mulhern shared that this will give us great expertise on this committee. He also shared that we need to keep in mind our priorities as they are working on the FY'09 budget. The merger is effective July 1, 2007. AmeriCorps Formula Funding (Approval Item) Paula VanDam gave background on the funding recommendations (see memo from Paula VanDam dated June 10, 2007). Due to staff and executive director changes, Catholic Family Services pulled out of the application process late Friday, June 8. The funding amount that was recommended for this program will be redistributed to those programs that took larger cuts. The staff recommends renewal funding at the recommended amount for the following applicants: Char-Em ISD ($113 ,500), The Guidance Center ($194,361), Marquette Alger RESA ($166,824), The Regents of the Univ. of Michigan ($273 ,480), Campfire USA West MI Chapter ($122,397), Volunteer Muskegon ($180,315), and Habitat for Humanity Michigan ($322,768). Commissioner Mawby made a motion to approve this recommendation. Commissioner Pardoe supported the motion. The motion passed unanimously. The staff recommends funding at the recommended amount for the following new/recompete applicants: Boys and Girls Club ofBenton Harbor ($132,040), Huron Pines ($125 ,805), MI Dept of Agriculture ($161, 168), MI Primary Care Association ($226,278), Communities in Schools Detroit ($264,600), Good Samaritan Ministries ($131 ,050), and BHK Child Development ($367,877). �There was discussion on the percentage of cut that Communities in Schools Detroit received. Commissioners agreed to transfer one FTE from BHK Child Development (from 31 to 30) to Communities in Schools Detroit (from 21 to 22). MCSC staff will reallocate the funds from that FTE to Communities in Schools Detroit. With this redistribution, Commissioner Mawby made a motion to support the recommendations. Commissioner Pardoe supported the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Chairman Mulhern noted that the MCSC has lost $1 million in competitive funding. There needs to be a discussion on a strategy to retain the competitive funding. Ms. VanDam shared that the CNCS has a new 5-year strategic plan with their priorities around engaging babyboomers, youth in service, and mobilizing volunteers. The MCSC would have a better chance of receiving competitive funding with programs that focus on these priority areas. The MCSC Funding Committee shared the same concerns. They will be meeting late summer to discuss a strategy for receiving more competitive funds. Chairman Mulhern suggested a session at the mentoring conference in October that would engage our mentoring community around AmeriCorps funding opportunities. He also suggested that it may be helpful to have an AARP person on the MCSC Board. He would like to hear from the MCSC Funding Committee at the September board meeting on how the MCSC can be more successful in receiving competitive funding. Update on State Budget Musette Michael gave a quick update on the budget and shared that the MCSC funding is back in the FY'07 budget. Commissioner Parker moved to support the motion and Commissioner Collier seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Draft Blueprint for Action · Musette Michael gave an overview of the process arotmd the Blueprint for Action. The information came from the goals that Commissioners established at the February 2007 board retreat. This plan will help to move the MCSC forward with programs working in the same direction. Staff will be identifying activities within their programs for each strategy. Members like the plan and made a few additional suggestions. Commissioner Parker added that activities should include ways to measure their success. Reappointment of Commission Board Members Members reviewed the list of members whose terms expire in October. Commissioner Pardoe will be depariing as she is term limited. Commissioner Acho will be taking a position in Washington DC. Members seek representation from the Upper Peninsula, northeastern Michigan, youth, and those with backgrounds in communications, the Arab American community and senior citizens. Commissioner Pardoe advocates for continuing two youth commissioners as members to assure stronger youth participation. She also suggests having a current commissioner mentor youth commissioners. Chairman Mulhern suggested asking Jeanine Yard and Angelia Salas for suggestions on youth demonstrating outstanding qualities. Commissioner Sign-On Letters Two letters were distributed to members for their review. One letter will go to members of the Michigan Congressional delegation and the other to Congressman George Miller. The letters support reauthorization and national service funding. As was agreed at the April 27, 2007 MCSC board meeting, the Executive Committee can approve the letters and signing-on the MCSC commissioners names . Commissioner Mawby made a motion to support the letters and Commissioner Pardoe supported the motion. The motion passed unanimously. To support the development of new recruitment ideas, Mentor Michigan has selected six sites to participate in the pilot of the Men in Mentoring Grant Program. These grants will allow four programs and two collaboratives to develop new strategies to recruit and retain male mentors, particularly men of color. Funds are to be used for male focused recruitment efforts such as: recruitment events/activities , printed materials, newspaper ads , posters, etc. This is an opportunity for programs/collaboratives to have funds specifically dedicated to implementing new and innovative plans to market to men . Grants are being awarded for two years beginning in September 2007 . This opportunity is made possible by funds from the Kellogg Foundation and John Hancock Financial Services . Engage at least 20 corporations and businesses to support mentoring that will ultimately lead to the recruitment of more mentors, particularly male mentors. Engage at least 10 media partners to increase public awareness about the need for mentors , particularly male mentors, and men of color. Engage local mentoring programs and collaboratives to recruit male mentors . Intended Outcomes • • • • • • Create replicable , viable, recruitment strategies to recruit male mentors . Create statewide attention to the need for mentors, particularly male mentors. Increase the number of male mentors statewide. Increase the numbers of boys being served by mentors. Increase the capacity and skills of mentoring agencies to engage men , especially men of color. �Mentor Michigan AmeriCorps*VISTA Update Mentor Michigan AmeriCorps*VISTA Members to serve at the MCSC Mentor Michigan recruited two AmeriCorps*VISTA members that are housed at the Michigan Community Service Commission. Katie Clark, Mentor Michigan AmeriCorps*VISTA, Partnerships and Outreach member will focus support and outreach to groups such as: higher education institutions , fraternities , sororities, mentoring collaboratives , funders , etc. Joan Johnson , Mentor Michigan Ame riCorps*VISTA, Special Initiatives member will focus on three special initiatives: children in foster care and those aging out of foster care , children of incarcerated parents, and men in mentoring . Online registration is available at www.mentormichigan.org �DeVone Boggan DeVone Boggan, a Michigan native, is president of the consulting group DbMentors, Incorporated that provides technical assistance and training to mentoring programs. He is a member of the National Mentoring Partnership's Public Policy Council and is a co-author of the Partnership's Elements of Effective Practice Second Edition. Boggan has an extensive background as a provider of technical assistance and training for mentoring and youth development practitioners. His experience includes developing and implementing effective mentoring/youth development strategies for youth traditionally underserved by mentoring programs. These programs include mentoring efforts that serve youth who have multiple contacts with the juvenile justice system as well as those who are incarcerated in youth correctional facilities, youth in foster care, and youth in alternative education settings. He has developed and implemented mentoring programs for youth of all backgrounds ages 7-25. He has extensive expertise and passion for training and motivating mentors and has trained more than 25,000 mentors nationwide. Boggan has worked in the public and private sectors in the areas of public policy and administration, as well as organizational design, human resource development, and management. He is a consultant to the President's National Advisory Council on Violence Against Women and Children and is the co-author of three publications: Classification of Mentoring Relationship Types , Final Report - Mentoring Service Delivery Systems, and Framework for Mentorology. Boggan also served as Executive Director of The Mentoring Center, a regional provider of technical assistance and training for mentors and mentoring organizations. David Eisner, MPA David Eisner is Chief Executive Officer of the Corporation for National and Community Service, the Federal Agency that oversees America's service and volunteering programs, including AmeriCorps, VISTA, NCCC, Senior Corps, Learn and Serve America and other domestic service and volunteering programs. The Corporation has set a national goal of providing mentors to an additional three million youth by 201 0 with an emphasis on serving children with incarcerated parents and children in or aging out of foster care. Under Eisner, the Corporation has expanded the reach of its programs, reduced administrative burdens on grantees, increased its efficiency and accountability, and lowered many of its per unit program costs. In 1998, he co-founded the Sunflower County Freedom Project, which is an organization that mentors middle and high school students and assists them with getting into college. Asch ran the Freedom Project for seven years before leaving in the summer of 2006 to launch the U.S. Public Service Academy. The U.S. Public Service Academy would be America's first national civilian university, and would give undergraduates a four-year education in exchange for a five-year commitment to public service after they graduate. DATE, TIME, LOCATION This year's Celebration will be held on Tuesday, November 13, from 9:00 a.m. -4:30 p.m., at the Kellogg Center in East Lansing. Registration will take place from 8:00-9:00 a.m. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. WORKSHOPS You will have the opportunity to attend two workshops that cover important topics relevant to your AmeriCorps service. Workshop session topics include service project planning, introductory grant writing, how to start your own nonprofit, documenting your year of service , the FISH philosophy, and many others.
