Gilbert papers (RHC-183). Douglas R. Gilbert (b. 1942) is an American photographer from Michigan. He was born in Holland, Michigan and is the son of Russell W. and Carmen (Andree) Gilbert. Gilbert earned a B.A. in social sciences and art at Michigan State University in 1964, an M.S. in photography from the Institute of Design at Illinois Institute of Technology in 1972, and a M.S.W. from Salem State College in 1993. He is married to Barbara (McDonald) Gilbert, and has three daughters, Robyn, Rachel, and Anne. Gilbert took a serious interest in photography at the age of fourteen. In 1963 he joined the staff of Look magazine in New York as the second youngest photojournalist in the magazine's history. As a Look photographer from 1964 to 1966, he photographed folk musician Bob Dylan, the Newport Folk Festival, Simon and Garfunkel, the New York City Financial District, the children and facilities at the Manhattan School for Seriously Disturbed Children. From 1967 to 1969, Gilbert did several shoots, including that of folk singer Janis Ian for Life magazine. After moving to Chicago, Illinois in 1969 to attend the Illinois Institute of Technology, Gilbert conducted notable photo shoots of business and political figure Lenore Romney, and pursued more personal and artistic photography, focusing on urban and rural landscapes in Illinois and Michigan. He then joined the faculty of Wheaton College, where he taught from 1972 to 1982. In 1993, Gilbert graduated from Salem State College, Massachusetts, with a Masters in Social Work, and later pursued a second career as a psychotherapist. Douglas Gilbert died in June 2023. Throughout his photography career, he pursued both freelance commercial work as well as artistic work. His art photography is characterized by its classic black-and-white format, and features people, places and objects shot great attention and sensitivity. Gilbert's works are held in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, The Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, and the Grand Valley State University Art Galleries, as well as in numerous private and institutional collections. In its early years the firm only printed expensive, beautifully-produced volumes, until demand led to the publication of the more modest Insel-Bücherei series in 1912. Rosie Case Bloom Ceramic, 2007 These ceramic bowls were created in an attempt to capture the elegance of subtle line quality within pottery. They also express feelings of desire, seduction, and beauty. Containing all of the connotations of flowers in full bloom; exposed, vulnerable, and feminine. Monica Johnstone A Rose By Any Other Technique Quilt, 2006 The rose has been a frequent and perhaps overburdened symbol since antiquity which has a strong tradition in quilting. This work explores the many ways that rose and its attendant quilting have been rendered by needleworkers as distinct and disparate as the Amish, the trapunto artists of Provencal, the makers of Baltimore Album quilts in the mid-19th C, to modem master quilters such as Karen McTavish, and the mixed textile artists who stretch the definition of the quilt and use high tech materials in their embellishments. These artists, the vast majority of whom are women, enter into a kind of historical dialogue through their work. I sought to bring their "voices" together in this etude on technique. They are my mom, sister, and niece. This is a photo that is hard to take because they live far apart (Africa and England). They have all been an inspiration to me. Sook-Young Augustin Self Identity Watercolor, 2008 I wanted to show a simple representation of a self portrait. The realistic shadows and highlights divide the face. The paper at the point when the halves come together is blank to emphasize the division. It is the emotional, mental, psych~logi cal, and physical divide a woman (or anyone) feels after being sexually assaulted. The light side is the hope for the future that things will get better; and it won't necessarily happen again. The darker side is the pain that lingers for the rest of your life. I am an advocate. I believe there are many things that need to be spoken about. For example, it needs to be acceptable for a woman to discuss sexuality and the protection that goes along with this. AIDS is very serious and sometimes all it takes is someone with a condom to take their own action against it. Jacqueline Cuppy Medium: digital collage "Ascend" Women are the care givers and mothers ofus all. The figure is rising above, carrying a small child as she gazes down upon the child. Despite obstacles, life' s struggles and challenges, she prevails. She has wings to lift herself and others on her journey. Samantha Andrus Henry Medium: Acrylics "She Danced Winged Victory" A number of years before I created this piece, I had seen the damaged, ancient Greek sculpture named Winged Victory in the Louvre. It sets in an alcove on the main staircase; it's beauty and size awesome. Winged Victory, the sculpture, really is a testament of women in an ancient culture that did not allow women much public expression. I wondered what she would look like if she were allowed expression, if she were allowed to speak publicly, because when I looked at the sculpture expression was so apparent. �Samantha Andrus Henry Medium: Oil pastel crayon "Le Feminine" Le Feminine is about being feminine in an age of modernism. Using lines and the same colors as work done by Peit Mondrain, this piece seeks to engage modernist prospective with the fluidity that is feminine. Mondrain believed his modernist work to be a "new form" based on the harmony of straight lines and pure colors; however his work failed to recognize difference seeking to introduce only one type of harmony. Luce Irigaray, French Feminist, philosopher and rhetorician, suggests that women in language and in art have been constructed as backward men, as the opposite of men, when in fact, woman as a being is not the opposite of man or of being masculine. Woman or le feminine is difference it's self, thus, she proposes that women and men work together toward an understanding of difference. This piece asks then: What does it mean to be more than just men and women? What does difference mean? Monica Johnstone Medium: Quilt "Thor's Hammer" Many of my ancestors come from southern Scotland. They are often described as fishermen, which invariably makes me think of the women and children in seaside communities who waited to see, time and again, if their sea-faring husband, father, son or brother would return. Over the millennia in so many cultures the story has usually been about those who went to sea desperately wanting to, rather than about those who bravely lived lives of great uncertainly in their wake. Thor's Hammer is meant to show the last moment of waiting as a single ship returns, its crew as yet unsighted. Betsy Mcinnis Medium: mold "To Have and To Hold" The motivation behind this piece stems from a lack of appreciation most women have for their breasts. It embodies the idea that no matter how big or small, firm and soft, a woman's body is beautiful and her own. Melissa Selmon Medium Charcoal "Sheer Bliss" Most ofmy work deals with the relationship between emotions and children's facial expressions. The emotion conveyed in each piece represents a part ofmy life journey. This piece was created during a part of my life when I realized that my true passion is to share my art with the world. It took a long time to figure out what I really wanted in life ... this piece captures that moment in my life. As women I strongly feel that it's important for all of us to find our love and passion in life. Hakando Sibalwa Medium: Digital Portrait "Maanza (mun-zuh)" Kat, my wife, is the motivation for this portrait. The main picture is a picture of our hands. The word maanza means hands in TONGA, my Zambian language. The hands are shaped in the form of a heart representing our togetherness. The portrait, itself, is a mosaic of pictures from our first date to our travels to New York, Chicago, and Lusaka, Zambia, where she had one of her bridal showers. These make up the hand. The background is made up of photos of our wedding at GVSU, Allendale campus on 24th of Oct. 2008 where we both are masters students. The photo depicts the diversity ofus and of our lives and the coming together of their diversity for a common cause. Torrie Unphrey Medium: Collage "Transformation" After battling Anorexia for more than 15 years, despite doctors saying I would not survive, I decided to prove them wrong. While in the hospital, one of the worst bouts of my disease, I created this piece. It is depicts the life that Anorexia has entrapped me in, and my hopes for transformation from being labeled an eating disorder, and becoming a strong woman without Anorexia controlling my mind. It is my hope, that through continuing my fight with this monster, I will find freedom, find myself, and learn to live the life that I dream of. I hope that this shows women that recovery is possible, and that we can break the chains that bind us to the scale, learning that we are more than what we weigh. Freedom from an eating disorder is possible, but we must fight this monster, the voice in our heads that pounds us down, controlling our every thought and move.
