Rhem Christ Community Church Spring Lake, Michigan Advent, December 14, 2003 Transcription of the spoken sermon Two weeks ago we entered the Advent season with the theme, “The Vulnerability of God,” in which I mentioned to you that it was a couple of years ago that I came to what for me was a striking realization - that there is a tension in the New Testament between the God who was revealed in the human flesh of Jesus and the God who is pictured and portrayed in the wake of resurrection and the enthronement of Jesus. That, for me, was a rather startling insight that I could not believe that I had not dealt with earlier, in handling the Advent season from year to year. The thing that caught my attention was the fact that the God mirrored in Jesus between crib and cross was quite another God than the God of power and glory who will come at the end of time, sending Christ again for the consummation of all things and that final judgment scene. The God of the second coming is God, the Sovereign, the Lord of history, the One who called all things into being and will call time when it will be no more, the God, the Ultimate Judge of heaven and earth who has committed judgment to the risen and enthroned Christ. The God of the human Jesus is a God of vulnerability. The other God is a God of power, sovereignty, control, simply what we usually think of when we think of God - omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, all of those omni- words. I have come back to this topic in this Advent season because I think that it is such an important understanding, and I want to linger for a couple more weeks on that idea of the vulnerability of God which, I believe, is the essence, the true picture of Christmas. Not only Christmas, but the word become flesh at Christmas, the ministry of grace and compassion through the years of Jesus’ ministry, and the crucified one who died with forgiveness on his lips, even acknowledging a sense of forsakenness. I submit to you that there is a tension between the portrait of God in the birth, life and death of Jesus and the understanding of God that comes to expression in the New Testament after Easter. All of it was written after Easter, and the conception of God that has held sway through two thousand years of Christian history is quite remarkable, really. I hope that before you yawn and go off to sleep and get bored with the fact that I continue to bore into this particular idea, you will hear me. © Grand Valley State University   �Looking for God in All the Wrong Places Richard A. Rhem Page 2   Let’s look once again at what John has to say in that marvelous prologue to his Gospel, and then the discussion in the 14th chapter, for there we have the clearest statement of incarnation in the scripture. “In the beginning was the word,” or as I have translated it, “In the beginning was the divine intention,” and that divine intention was the primordial light through which creation was effected. That eternal word, that eternal intention was the agent of creation. All things came into being through that agency. That light shined in the darkness of creation and the darkness never overcame it. That is the way we usually translate it here, and we use it here as a statement of confidence and hope. The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has never overcome it. But, the Greek word has a double meaning. It can be translated “the darkness has not overcome it,” or it can be translated, “the darkness has not comprehended it.” It is like our English word grasp. The darkness did not grasp it, in terms of putting it out, controlling it. Or, the darkness did not grasp it, in terms of didn’t get it. The more I think about the whole context, I think perhaps the latter is the idea - the light shines in the darkness and the darkness didn’t get it. That divine intention, that primordial light came to Israel, to God’s people, and they didn’t get it. Those few who got it, to them God gave power to become sons and daughters of God, not something of human generation or human will, but an act of God. And in that 14th verse - creation didn’t get it, Israel didn’t get it, and the word became flesh and dwelt among us and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the father’s only son, full of grace and truth. And the 18th verse, “No one has seen God, but God the only son has made God known, the one who dwells in intimacy with God.” In that 14th chapter where Jesus speaks of his departure and Thomas says to him, “Where are you going? We don’t know the way,” and Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father but by me. You know the father,” and Phillip scratches his head and says, “Could you just show us the father?” And Jesus says, “How long have I been with you and you still don’t get it? If you have seen me, you have seen the father.” That is incarnation. That is Christmas. That is the embodiment of God, of the eternal intention of God in the human, and I have been making that point. I have been saying that in various ways. But, I raise a question today: Is that incarnation in this only son, or is the incarnation in Jesus the exemplar of what is universally true, that is, that God is incarnate in the human? I have been saying the latter. I have been suggesting here in various ways and various times my conviction that the genius of the Christian faith and its understanding of incarnation was that the divine has become human, that the infinite has become finite, that the concretization of that infinite mystery in the human is the marvelous understanding of Christian faith. But, I think that probably I have been saying what I wanted John to say. I think probably John © Grand Valley State University �Looking for God in All the Wrong Places Richard A. Rhem Page 3   intended to say that the divine intention became human in Jesus in one, in the only one. I think maybe in wrestling with it once again, going through it all once again, I probably have been trying to make John after my own image, just another good liberal Universalist. I think John probably was an exclusivist, and I think that when people quote John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the father but by me,” and say, “You are contradicting that?” I think they are right. I say that because in reading Elaine Pagels, who has done a lot of work in those Gnostic Gospels, there were a lot of gospels written in the latter first and early second centuries, there were gospels all over the place and most of them ended up on the cutting room floor. Only four made the cut, the canonical Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. But, there were a lot of other gospels. One of the most seriously considered is the Gospel of Thomas, and in her study of Thomas, as well as the general area of those Gospels of that time, Elaine Pagels suggests that John may well have been written to counter Thomas. I think she makes a pretty good case for it. These scholarly debates and discussions waffle back and forth and the best we can do is look at the data and then make up our minds on it, but Elaine Pagels has a persuasive argument as far as I understand. The Gospel of Thomas has a different religious sensibility than the Gospel of John. It is closer to Matthew, Mark and Luke than it is to John in some respects. The Gospel of Thomas has sayings of Jesus and many of the sayings of Jesus that can be found in Matthew, Mark and Luke. But, the Gospel of Thomas has a different religious sensibility. For example, let me give you just one quote from the Gospel of Thomas. In that Gospel, Jesus says, “If you bring forth what is in you, what you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is in you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you.” Now, that sounds like an enigmatic statement, but maybe we can get the sense of it. Thomas’ Jesus is saying there is that in you that you should bring forth, there is light in you. There is a deep primordial light in you. There is in you that which, brought forth, will bring you to wholeness or salvation. Don’t look to me to tell you the truth. Look deep inside yourself because the light dwells there, because you are all created in the image of God. And if you plumb the depths of your own being and get in touch with yourself, to use colloquial jargon, if you plumb the depths of your own being and come to that kind of awareness, when you say “Wow! Aha!” you will be saved. Salvation isn’t something that is bestowed on you from outside. Salvation is something that arises from the depths of you when you come to self-awareness and self-consciousness, when you allow the light that is in you to shine forth. And if you don’t do that, you will continue to live in darkness with distortion and alienation and estrangement and you will be destroyed. That is a different religious sensibility than you have in the Gospel of John. In the Gospel of John, the divine intention is that primordial light, that primordial light of creation, and © Grand Valley State University �Looking for God in All the Wrong Places Richard A. Rhem Page 4   then that process eventuates in the word becoming flesh. But, John said it is the word in flesh of the only son of God, the only begotten son. Elaine Pagels would argue that what was happening was that there was this diversity of understanding and interpretations of Jesus, this variety of Gospels. A few weeks ago I mentioned the old Church father, Araneus, who was fighting that kind of diversity, who was trying to stamp out all kinds of visions and revelations all over the place and to establish the orthodox view. Araneus understood that in order to calm the chaos and to bring some order, he had to establish orthodoxy, or right opinion. As a matter of fact, he was successful and we have four Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, and John prevailed over Thomas. Thomas was not heard of again for centuries, so we have in 325 the Nicene Creed where John’s divine word becomes human flesh, which is the only one, the one who can say, “I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the father but by me,” an absolutist and exclusivist claim, if we take it just that way. Dear Krister Stendahl says that is love talk among the disciples. I love the way he softens John 14:6, almost gets me back into the orthodox fold. He’s a wonderful New Testament scholar. But, I have to say I think probably John was setting up Jesus as the light, as the incarnation, as the embodiment of God, and as the only one, and it is then the task of the rest of us to believe in him and through him to be reconciled to God. The Nicene Creed in 325 has Jesus the light of light, God of God, that elevated Christology where he is divine, equal with God. From Chalcedon in 451, that creed gives us those famous words, “true God, true man.” Frankly, in 2000 years of Christian tradition, we have Jesus as the son of God, as the unique son of God, as one with us in our flesh but other than us, in that Jesus is both human and divine, and rather than the Jesus of Thomas saying to us, “Don’t look to me. Look down into your own depths,” we have John saying, “Look to Jesus, for therein is salvation.” There is quite a difference, the difference between the embodiment of God in one unique manifestation in history, or the embodiment of God in the cosmic drama, in the emergence of the human. Now, what difference does it make? Well, if John is right, then those thirty years between crib and cross were really an aberration, not a true reflection of the nature of God. If Jesus is the lone embodiment of God in human flesh, then we have a kind of unique situation to which we can only appeal or believe, but we do not have the embodiment of God in the human. The God of John’s Jesus is temporarily vulnerable, but not ontologically vulnerable. The God of John appears to be vulnerable in the flesh of Jesus, but that God’s not really vulnerable. That is still the sovereign Lord of history who will bring all things to consummation in the end. That is the God to whom Jesus ascends, at whose right hand Jesus is enthroned, who will call the end to history and wrap everything up. That God is still in control. That God is still the dominant God; that is still that supernatural being who called all things to being and will wrap all things up in the end. © Grand Valley State University �Looking for God in All the Wrong Places Richard A. Rhem Page 5   It seems to me that the message of Christmas in that conception is at war with the portrait of God that I see in the birth and life and death of Jesus. Am I the only one that sees that? Probably. But, I’m going to keep hammering away until at least you understand me enough to reject my idea. What difference does it make? It makes a world of difference; it makes a total difference as to one’s understanding of God. If Jesus is the only incarnation and if that thirty years of his life was not a true reflection of the nature of God, then we have God as usual. Then we have the God of control, we have the God of power, we have Almighty God, Omnipotent God, all of that. But, if Thomas was right, then what came to expression in Jesus was the embodiment of God in all of us in the human, and then the secret of being human, if we read it off Jesus who is the embodiment of God, is to be vulnerable. John is so close - he writes so poetically and powerfully of the Eternal Word or, as I like to translate it, “the Divine Intention,” becoming human. In chapter 14, he has Jesus respond to Philip, “If you have seen me, you have seen the Father.” If only he had not made that incarnation, that embodiment of God in the human, a once for all, one time event. If only he had gone on to have Jesus say, “And what is true of me is true of you all.” That, I think, is who the Gospel of Thomas reports Jesus as claiming. But, John was written in a conflict situation. We know of the intramural conflict in the Jewish community at the time of John’s writing. And Elaine Pagels suggests that there was another conflict going on - the conflict between those who saw Jesus as a paradigm, a model, of humanity as Thomas has it and, over against that, John’s claim that incarnation occurred in the one “only begotten Son,” in Jesus. If John is right, then the vulnerability mirrored in Jesus is an aberration, a one time revelation, but not what is universally true, namely that in the humanity of Jesus we see the vulnerability of God, a vulnerability to be embodied in all humankind - humankind then being the embodiment of the Creative Source and Ground of the whole cosmic process. In Thomas, as opposed to John, what came to expression in Jesus is the vulnerability of God - a vulnerability to which humankind is called in that we all are the incarnation of God. That view has never prevailed. Something like this was suggested by the 18th century German biblical scholar, Ludwig Feuerbach. Lloyd Geering summarizes how Feuerbach might have stated such an interpretation: What the incarnation means is this. The divine has enfleshed itself in the human condition, not just in one man but in the human species itself, since the New Testament refers to him as the New Adam. God (as traditionally understood) and humankind, are being reconciled. They have become one and the same. And what is the divine? What is the Word that is said to have become flesh? It is the very creativity which has been present in the world from the beginning and which continues through aeons of time. Thus the Christian doctrine of the incarnation illumines for us what is happening on the surface of our planet. Here, from this point onwards, the creativity and the responsibility, which our forebears observed within the world and which they attributed to their imaginary and other-worldly gods, is to be found chiefly within, and exercised by, humankind. Feuerbach lost his position in both Church and University. Such a view has never prevailed. Orthodoxy won in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th centuries, empowered by the Roman Emperor. The Church has been in control, has been a dominant institution. The God of the Church, the God of Christian Gospel has been the sovereign Lord of history, Almighty God. I understand why. Who wants a vulnerable God? Why do we have God at all? Why are we religious at all? Because we’re afraid, aren’t we? Oh, we live before this mystery that we don’t comprehend, but we’re also insecure and afraid. A young woman missing in North Dakota and the frozen sod and the frozen river do not yield a clue, in spite of the prayers sent to heaven. An elderly couple in a car, someone comes through a stop street, one is dead, bang just like that. We worry about our loved ones and our representatives in harm’s way in Iraq and we wonder about our health and the health of our spouses, our children’s well-being. To be human is to be vulnerable. So, we really could do without a weak God. As a Scottish theologian said one day, “A God without a hell isn’t worth a damn.” We really want God to be almighty and in control. And then, of course, because we are like the God we worship, we’re also justified in our own attempts to be dominant and in control. We would be “King of the Hill,” perpetuate our position, our power and our privilege. But, if God is a vulnerable God, then we would have to take our power and position and privilege and we would have to give it away. Then, rather than keeping our thumb on a restless, chaotic world marked by terrorism, we would have to find a way to create an alternative world. Of course, you say, “Silly man.” One could only suggest what I am suggesting this morning. It’s a radical revision. One could only take on the author of the Gospel of John if one was either a fool or almost ready to retire. But, I am really serious. Do you think, with the brutality and the chaos and the violence and the darkness that is rampant upon the face of the earth, do you really believe at some point that God will swoop in and change it all? Don’t you think until we learn another way that the darkness and the death will go on? Don’t you suspect just possibly that the secret of Christmas is the vulnerability of God which would mean that where that was embodied we have the only way, the only truth, and the only possibility of life? © Grand Valley State University �Looking for God in All the Wrong Places Richard A. Bob Loper World War II 1 hour 56 minutes 1 second (00:00:12) Early Life Pt. 1 -Born on May 9, 1924 in Central Lake, Michigan -There were no jobs at the time, so his parents had no jobs -The first few years of his life were spent in a shack -He had one younger sister -They lived in the middle of nowhere -His biological father left, and he grew up with a stepfather from three years old and on -He and his sister were left alone a lot of the time -He and his sister slept in a loft in the shack -There were no beds, and it was similar to a hay loft in a barn -They eventually moved to an actual house four miles from Bal School -Ball School was a one room schoolhouse that taught grades 1-6 -Had one stove for the winter, and no indoor plumbing -Lived in that house for a couple years -They moved to another house that had been vacated -It had three bedrooms upstairs -They had a bannister that he and his sister would slide down -By the time they moved into that house he was eight years old (ca. 1932) -His stepfather owned a Model T car -They were near Grass Lake, Michigan by now -Remembers that there was a hill near their house -He and his sister would watch the hill at night, hoping to see the headlights of the car -They had a barn near the house in Grass Lake -He and his sister would jump off the hay loft -When he was older he would grind tree stumps for 15¢ an hour -Built two houses with his father when they lived near Orchard View Schools -Orchard View Schools are near Muskegon, Michigan -Delivered bundles of wood for $2 an hour -They lost the house they were living in and built a new one in Muskegon -Moved in before the house was done and had to brave a storm in it -Only saw his biological father twice in his life -Learned some of his trades from his stepfather -The snow in northern Michigan made roads impassible -Remembers only a horse and rickshaw could get through the snow to deliver supplies -He started school when he was seven (or eight) years old (00:13:40) Getting Drafted & the Start of the War -When he was eighteen he was taking a college prep course, planning on going to college -He was a junior in high school at this time -Plan was interrupted by the start of the war �-Received his draft notice on May 9, 1943 -Not allowed to finish high school -Remembers the attack on Pearl Harbor -Has since visited Pearl Harbor and the wreck of the USS Arizona (00:16:03) Early Life Pt. 2 -Remembers one time when he and his sister were going to catch, kill, and cook a chicken -Managed to catch the chicken, but botched the execution (00:17:08) Training Pt. 1 -Sent to Camp Patrick Henry, Virginia from Camp Wolters, Texas (Mineral Wells, Texas) -The men nicknamed it “Center Part of Hell” -Stayed there for thirty days -He was originally in an infantry unit, but wound up assigned to an airborne unit -The infantry unit was sent to the Anzio beachhead and the majority of them were killed -He was pulled out of the infantry and was reassigned to an airborne unit -After his reassignment he left Virginia to be deployed overseas -Remembers being at Camp Patrick Henry and wandering into the “colored section” -Got kicked out by Military Police because he was white (00:19:58) Deployment Pt. 1 -He boarded a Liberty Ship that was part of a twenty ship convoy -It was a terrible voyage -Had to stay below decks the entire time -German aircraft attacked the convoy and sank one of the ships -Took twenty days to reach Oran, Algeria -Received more training there -Got there in December 1943 -Joined a British convoy in the Mediterranean Sea and sailed through the Suez Canal -Destination was Karachi, India (now Karachi, Pakistan) -Hated sailing with the British -The British demanded respect and formality from non-British soldiers -The food was infested with flies -Took twenty days to sail from Oran to Karachi -The seas were rough on the Atlantic portion of the crossing -Slept in six high bunks -Conditions were bad, but the men were excited to be going overseas -He didn’t get seasick, but a lot of men did (00:25:13) Arrival in India -Only in Karachi for a short time -Took a train to Calcutta -Sent to a training base -While traveling across India he saw little villages made up of four or five shacks -The people were selling little trinkets and bananas and oranges -He and his unit were going to be a part of the 10th Air Force -Trained with gliders -Each glider had one .50 caliber gun position and room for five troops (00:30:25) Stationed in Burma Pt. 1 -The plan was to go into Burma and stop the Japanese from crossing into India �-Their mission was to establish gun positions at airstrips across Burma -Started out working with squadrons of P-40 fighter planes -The P-40s weren’t fast enough -Eventually worked with P-47, then P-51, then finally P-38 squadrons -Each one was better than the last -Remembers one pilot showing off after he shot down a Japanese plane -Wound up crashing his plane in the process of landing it -The unit that the Flying Tigers had become was there to protect them -Also to protect the Allied bombers that were flying out of Burma -Remembers a P-47 fighter plane coming back to base with forty bullet holes in it -Their duty was to protect the airstrips from Japanese air raids -At some point they were sent to a base that was used by Merrill’s Marauders -It was called the “Center Pearl of the World” due to the high amount of precious stones -You could trade rations and cigarettes for precious stones -Only getting paid $50 a month while he was in Burma -The pattern was moving from base to base and setting up new gun positions -Almost made it to Mandalay before the war ended -It was all jungle -Meant that supplies had to be air dropped into them -Spent most of 1944 and most of 1945 in Burma (00:39:30) Training Pt. 2 -Received his basic training at Camp Wolters, Texas near Mineral Wells, Texas (00:39:50) Making Rank -He was sent over to Burma as a private first class -While he was in Burma he made technician fifth grade communications chief -He should have technically been a staff sergeant -From that point on he worked almost solely on the radio (00:41:22) Stationed in Burma Pt. 2 -Each new base they went to they would set up six to eight gun positions -The battalion had about one hundred five men in it -Had a captain, a sergeant, a staff sergeant, and miscellaneous noncommissioned officers -Everyone else was a private -Traveled around the country in C-47 transport planes -They were living in British tents -American government would lease each tent for $18 a day -There were four men to a tent -The men hated those tents -One night remembers a scorpion found its way into his tent -The tents had to be covered in mosquito netting -Had to take medicine that turned their skin yellow -Most likely Atabrine to prevent contracting malaria (00:44:43) Fighting on the Brahmaputra River -There was one point where they were stationed near the Brahmaputra River -There was an island in the river that was held by the Japanese -He and a small group of men were sent to a place that was parallel to that island -Once there he was charged with setting up the telephone system �-They established a perimeter and set up a .50 caliber machine gun position -Knew not to get captured by the Japanese -Knew that the Japanese routinely interrogated, then tortured to death any prisoners -Remembers mortars being fired over his head at the island -His captain had volunteered the unit to carry out this raid -Felt that his unit needed to see action before the war was over -Slept in a hammock with his Thompson submachine gun nearby -Carried a Thompson SMG through India and Burma -Also armed with bayonets, but never had to use them -Eventually used the machine gun to rake the river island with fire -Japanese forces were either forced to retreat, or were killed by the barrage (00:50:05) End of the War Pt. 1 -Moved to one (or two) more bases before the war ended (00:50:18) Stationed in Burma Pt. 3 -They always made sure to have someone on the gun position at night at all times -They had Indian troops with them that helped guide and protect American soldiers -Regarded to be expert swordsmen -Also worked with Chinese and Australian soldiers in Burma -One night the telephone system went out -He had to go out and investigate because he was the communications chief -Had to be careful because the Chinese were trigger happy -He crawled out to the first gun position and found that it was vacant -Started searching and almost shot the gunner -Thought he was a Japanese soldier hiding in the brush -Closest that he ever got to killing someone -The gunner had gotten scared and was hiding in the brush -In the process he stepped on a telephone wire and knocked out the line -Another night he was on the gun position and his captain came up to him, visibly scared -Thought that the Japanese were attacking their position -Bob explained that the men were bored and were just shooting for fun (00:56:29) Radio Training -While in India he had to learn radio code -Had to be able to translate and transcribe eighteen words per minute -Also learned Morse code -Had a tool that would translate the radio code into a secret code -He also had a small sheet with secret codes on it -Ordered to eat the sheet if he thought he was going to be captured (00:58:31) End of the War Pt. 2 -From Burma he flew back into India aboard a small, two seat plane -Pilot knew how to expertly navigate the mountains -Sent to a town outside of Calcutta -He had Burmese money with him, which was worthless in India -Indians had killed a GI for trying to pass off Burmese money as Indian money -Decided to give it a try anyway in a small shop -Left the shop and the merchant discovered that the money was Burmese -A mob formed and chased him and his friends down �-They managed to get back to the train station and escape (01:02:55) Officers’ Displacement Center -He was sent to an Officers’ Displacement Center in India for the rest of his time -Place to process and hold commissioned officers that were returning home -He ate well and drank well there -Played pranks on each other -He had an Indian civilian that cleaned his quarters -Attended an Indian wedding, but got kicked out by Military Police because he was too drunk (01:09:02) Veterans’ Group Involvement -He is now a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars -Enjoys drinking beer at the hall and the fish dinners they have on Fridays (01:10:09) Hospitalization in Burma -In Burma he was sent to a field hospital for about two weeks -Had a temperature of 104oF -Doctors didn’t think that he was going to make it -He had an unknown disease and still doesn’t know to this day what he had (01:11:05) Living Conditions -Ate spam, dehydrated potatoes, and dehydrated eggs -When they were near an Air Force base they were able to eat better -They had two types of rations: C rations and K rations -C rations came in a can -Had a piece of candy, spam, and a canned vegetable -K rations came in a cardboard box and were more meager -Basically lived off of rations during his time in Burma (01:13:24) Working with the Flying Tigers -The Flying Tigers (or rather the unit they became) operated out of the airstrips they guarded -The Flying Tigers had started off in China, Burma, and India -American pilots that flew missions against the Japanese very early in the war -Feels that only the British got the majority of the credit in the CBI Theatre -The Flying Tigers were outnumbered and outgunned against the Japanese -Still inflicted heavy casualties on the Japanese and took few casualties (01:17:18) Glider Infantry -He was technically part of a glider infantry unit, but never did any combat landings -Only trained to do a combat landing -Heard about one glider unit that suffered heavy casualties due to a bad landing -He was part of the 667th Anti-Aircraft Airborne Machine Gun Battery (01:19:29) Coming Home Pt. 1 -Got back to the United States in December 1945 -Pulled into New York City -The voyage home was rough -Had an abandon ship alarm when they were 250 miles off the coast of the U.S. -Everyone had to go up on deck in case they had to get off the ship -The ship listed so heavily to each side that it was almost impossible to walk (01:22:03) Getting Drafted and Training -Sent to Detroit for a physical examination -If your teeth were bad they were drilled right there on the spot �-He was sent to Camp Wolters, Texas for thirteen months -NOTE: If he was drafted in May 1943 and was in Oran by December 1943 he was most likely only in Camp Wolters for thirteen weeks -From Texas he was sent to Camp Patrick Henry, Virginia (01:23:59) End of the War Pt. 3 -Hearing the news about the atomic bombs was a relief -Meant that the war would be coming to an end soon -Things started easing up (01:25:02) Deployment Pt. 2 -Got to Oran in December 1943 -Saw ships in Oran that had been damaged by bombs, or mines (01:27:07) Coming Home Pt. 2 -Got home in time for Christmas 1945 -Took a train back to Grand Rapids, Michigan -Slept on his duffel bag -Took a small freight train from Grand Rapids to Muskegon -The train dropped him off pretty close to his parents’ home -He remembers walking in the front door and seeing his mother in the living room -He kept all of the letters that his parents sent him while he was in the service -Remembers his mother sent him some candy apples for one Christmas -He was only twenty one years old by the time he got back home -He had been engaged to a girl before he was deployed -She couldn’t wait for him to come home though and got married while he was gone (01:32:49) Life after the War -He went back to work for American Coil Spring Company in Muskegon -Became an electrician -Got a better job at General Telephone Company -Got paid 75¢ an hour -Took a college course on solid state heating -Took a metallurgy course at Grand Rapids Junior College -Lasted six months -Designed a few electrical components and got them patented -Got an electrical job in Kalamazoo, Michigan -Dealing with primitive surveillance cameras -Worked there for three years until the company went bankrupt -Saw a newspaper ad that Montague Schools needed an electronics teacher -Applied for the job and got it at Montague High School -Working in a two room building that was separate from the high school -Preparing students for vocational type skills -Had students come in from five different school districts -Retired from Montague Schools in 1989 after working there for eleven years -Always jumped at the opportunity to get a new job if it meant better pay -He had a job in an electronics department for a major manufacturer Gilbert papers (RHC-183). Douglas R. Gilbert (b. 1942) is an American photographer from Michigan. He was born in Holland, Michigan and is the son of Russell W. and Carmen (Andree) Gilbert. Gilbert earned a B.A. in social sciences and art at Michigan State University in 1964, an M.S. in photography from the Institute of Design at Illinois Institute of Technology in 1972, and a M.S.W. from Salem State College in 1993. He is married to Barbara (McDonald) Gilbert, and has three daughters, Robyn, Rachel, and Anne. Gilbert took a serious interest in photography at the age of fourteen. In 1963 he joined the staff of Look magazine in New York as the second youngest photojournalist in the magazine's history. As a Look photographer from 1964 to 1966, he photographed folk musician Bob Dylan, the Newport Folk Festival, Simon and Garfunkel, the New York City Financial District, the children and facilities at the Manhattan School for Seriously Disturbed Children. Hi Loreen. LH: Hi. DD: Loreen, can you tell me about where you’re from and where you currently live? LH: I am from and still live in Hoosick Falls, New York. DD: And, have you lived there your whole life? LH: Mostly, on and off I moved around a little bit but, I’ve been here, like, 45 years [chuckles] combined, so. DD: Alright, Loreen can you tell me a story please about your experience with PFAS or with PFAS in your community? LH: The PFAS awareness issue began here in basically it was presented to the village board in August of 2014 and then began the debacle of how the state did not [chuckles] help Hoosick falls for almost a year and a half, they didn’t even tell us to stop drinking the water until EPA stepped in end of November 2015 is when we finally got the do not drink order. Our levels here were extreme and blood testing that started in February with results coming in April, May, also revealed extraordinary levels, scary levels in our- in our blood in all our residents. And from then on, we started a Twitter page, PFOA Project New York, and we- it was in the beginning to, one bring awareness but two we were also clamoring for hearings on what went wrong with the department of health and all that. So, it was sort of to bring shame but also, you know, awareness- my grandchildren were in the top 3 [chuckles] tested for their levels and at the time they were age 4 and 6. I am in the top 50 and- once the do not drink order came about in, we’ll say December 2015, I started doing research because I have all these health problems that are just weird. They’re nothing that none of my family has and whatnot, so I’ve always been wondering what happened. Well, I got some answers once I started doing research on PFAS and health effects, and I have continued to do that for the last 5 years, and it gets more and more [chuckles] dire every day to the point now that I’m working with- a university, we’re collecting health studies as part of our site study that we were worded through CDC and so we- we had been sharing the monthly and we’re starting on their site, now we’re going to weekly because so many studies are now coming out fast and furious and none of its good news. So, I- as- at the beginning I thought my Twitter page was finite, I thought once we got our hearings and once we started getting some regulations I could lay off, but this issue has just, literally popped since. So I’ve continued it, my page has grown, and I almost feel obligated because so many communities are going through what we went through in the beginning. So, you know, I want my page to be 1 �reflective of awareness for a mom or dad that just found out that their water has too much PFOA in it and they can go to my page and it's easier reading stuff. I do post health studies I find if they feel like delving into those. But more, you know, general here’s a, you know, a video, here’s what this states doing here, you know so that you can understand- so that someone who- cause this is not easy stuff to [chuckles]- to understand by any means with so many acronyms, I mean that took 2 years to get them all down. Both: [laughter] LH: You know, and with more coming out now as we start digging into replacement chemicals, so I try to keep it as user friendly as possible, although I will post the health studies that I find. DD: Mhm LH: So, it’s been a job, it’s been a full-time job for me for the last 5 years and now I’m on, I don’t even know how many committees. I’m working with National Academy of Sciences as a community liaison, I was invited to speak at their East Coast panels they just had the last month or so, I am a co-chair of our community working group here because we have 3 federal super-fun sites, the 1st in the nation for PFOA, there’s 2 state sites and their looking at 5 more, so this tinyyeah, we got Chernobyl-d with PFAS. So, among that, I’m part of the national coalition for PFAS- oh gosh, I’m on our cap committee for our site study, [chuckles] so it just goes on andI’m always- and now, the last couple years I’ve been writing and helping draft legislation, whether it be in New York state or federally and we have some great partners inside our general brands office, which is the next bill I’m working on and New York state I work with a lot of the environmental orgs, been to D.C., I think 7 times, I’ve submitted testimony at 2 congressional hearings, [chuckles] I’ve been invited to Alaska to do seminar there, I’ve been to- I’ve beentravelled all over the place for conferences and it’s just- I dove in head first, head first because I just feel like I need- given this is our health, this is the health of my family, this is the long term health of my grandchildren, I’m one of those, I’m a nerd, I need the data, I need the info, I’ll read as much as I can of it even though it’s sickening and depressing and arduous at times I just keep doing it.[chuckles] So, but until the issue stops, until it’s banned or I don’t need it, you know, we don’t need to do it anymore. So, that’s one of the things I’m working really hard on and also, you know, I’m a- I’d like to think I’m the biggest advocate for children’s health, because if you look at Hoosick Falls, you know, a lot of us, good majority of us have been here our whole lives. We’re toast, there’s no helping us at this point. But if we can help our children to not end up like us and give ‘em half a chance, and it may already be too late given, you know, the levels that they were drinking. But man, that’s the goal, you know, if not for us, you know, older folks, then for the kids. They didn’t sign up to drink poison, you know, so whatever I can do to help just keep pushing that. DD: Mhm, so what happened in Hoosick Falls? Why is it the Chernobyl that you call it? LH: So, the history of Teflon, it really goes back to the history of Teflon. We had our first plant open here in 1956, so-. DD: Wow. 2 �LH: Yeah [laughs], it was called flea dodge and then, we- it just was a little industrial town. We had like 8, 10 factories running all at the same time at one point so, now all these factories have contaminated, are still contaminating, we still have 2 sites of Saint-Gobain that are still operating, and this is becoming a huge battle now too because, while New York state has declared them hazardous substances, and they did that back in 2016, which allowed them to get state super-fun site status then onto federal in July of ’17. But they’re still operating, and while PFOA and PFAS have been stewardshipped out, [unclear] the replacement chemicals, which we are finding, which aren’t regulated. So, we’re back to square one and we also know now through all the ongoing health research, that the replacement chemicals are just as bad, if not worse. So, this is going to be an ongoing- we just literally 2 weeks ago, 3 weeks ago had a PRAP from DEC, a Proposed Remediation Action Plan, for new water sources. So, we had a municipal gack filtration system on the municipal water and all the well owners got POET’s, which is Point-ofEntry Treatment systems on their wells. But we’d been looking and looking and looking for a new water source for 5 years. DD: Wow. LH: And so- yeah so, they’re- the proposal’s out now with comment due, I think at the end of the month and then we roll from there and however many years it’s gonna take to get those going and. But, in the meantime, we’re back to square one with the replacement chems and we had this argument with DEC while we’re still being contaminated [laughs]. Until they’re regulated, I can’t think of a better term than we’re shit outta luck. Which is, I suppose, you know where most industrial communities contaminated are too, until they’re- till more regulated we’re just gonna keep breathing them in. And the stacks from these plants is what contaminated us in the first place, all this stuff literally, the best explanation is, came outta the- it snowed on us for decades. Snow hit the soil, it came through the soil and hit all our water tables and aquifers and it’s still snowing. There is no regulation to make them put controls on the stacks to control the emissions, it’s not regulated. So, this is the next battle, or current battle, actually. DD: Wow. [laughs] LH: Yeah. DD: So, it sounds like you were able to get some movement, some help- some help from kind of local governments and things but not- not all the way. LH: So, our water’s filtered, ok so that- you know, alright so we’ll at least stop the exposure that way. But the exposure happened because of what’s coming out of the stacks hasn’t been remedied, other than the 2 being phased out by 2015, and EPA did an air stack test here last year which showed the replacement chems, the shorter chains, plus, I don’t remember if it was 15 or 20 long chain PFAS that all, you know, seems like every researcher will tell you are worse for the humans. There were C8’s through C18’s that they couldn’t even identifyDD: Wow. 3 �LH: -that we’re being exposed to this very minute 3 blocks from my house, and nothings been done about it. So, [laughs] you know you- you’d think with what we’ve learned even just the past 5 years, you know, you look at Rob Bilott’s story right, he’s been doing this for 20 plus, and I can’t imagine 15 more years of this and being no further along, that man must be a saint because [laughs] I have the patience of a fence post. Both: [laughter] LH: I’m thinking 5 years and I’m still [unclear] I’d be banging my head off the wall, I’d probably give up which is maybe what they’re hoping for, you know. DD: Mhm. LH: But I’d like to think that the last 5 years with community after community, you know with us and p’s and West Virginia and [cape fear] and, you know, now it’s all Michigan, it’s all headline news. So, I don’t think we’ll slide backwards, so that’s good news but we still need more regs and hopefully a non-essential use ban on all of them, the EU is doing it between 2023 and 2025. Maine just passed, a week ago, a non-essential use ban by 2030 in all products, so now there’s precedent so, bills are coming, I can tell you that, on non-essential use bans and we have the PFAS Action Act out now and Senator Jill Brand has done some wonderful bills with us. I did a Facebook Live event with her and Rob Bilott and Mark Ruffalo to announce the PFAS Accountability Act that she came her and introduced as well. So, they’ve been- Congressman Delgado has been great, he’s on the PFAS Task Force, he was just here 2 weeks ago, so they’ve been- we’ve been lucky to have some really attentive elected, you know, representatives. Congressman Tonko, he’s right on this and he’s right here in Albany next to us. Senator Schumer is well behind all the ‘get rid of PFAS’ stuff, so we’ve been lucky there, luckier than a lot of states. But, again, are we lucky that we’re still being contaminated? [laughs] You know, they’re coming down on DOD now, you know, it’s the head of the snake, and it’s a whole different animal. And that was from, you know, the firefighting foams and whatnot. So, once you stop using firefighting foams and clean up the contamination, then your exposures could- supposedly done, yeah? Well, ours isn’t. DD: Right. LH: So, it’s 2 different battles but the same dragon, right? DD: What concerns do you have about PFAS contamination moving forward? LH: That they’re not doing enough quickly to stop exposure. Number 1, you have to stop the exposures any way possible, knowing how even the lowest doses, the lowest grains of salt in this bioaccumulate in children and cause health problems. There is no doubt now that they cause health problems, so stopping exposure has to be first and foremost and whether that’s in the air, water, food, cosmetics, wherever it’s coming from, especially contaminated communities. Cause we’ve been told by our health departments we have to lower our exposures, right so I have this huge level, in parts per trillion it’s 266. 4 �DD: Wow. LH: Yeah, so I have to go out of my way to not eat microwave popcorn, use Teflon- right cause I have to do- it’s gonna take me 20, 30 years to get that down to the [chuckles] EPA accepted level of 70 at the time, right? Well, if I can’t find it in the products, how am I supposed to lower my exposures? And they keep accumulating. So, will I die with this stuff in me? Likely, yes. Likely, yes. I’m gonna have just an extraordinary amount and I’ve never stepped foot in a factory. So, until we know where it’s coming from and stopping exposure, it’s just gonna keep building up and making people sick. So, that’s gotta be number 1. So, that would entail, right, you know, regulating all of them coming into any drinking water sources, all of them coming through the air because, you know, inhalation and dermal exposure and all that. Things in kid’s products, any- all of it it’s just- and there hasn’t been one found to be non-toxic out of the 92 hundred that are out there that we know of. Not one has come out and say, ‘this is absolutely non-toxic’. NTP and IEHS, they haven’t found that list yet. So, it’s frustrating to see congressional people saying ‘you don’t need to- we can do these 1 by 1’ yes, it’ll take 1,020 years. [laughs] okay, you know. But yeah, you have to stop the exposures, however it has to be done. Whether it’s rewriting all of Tasca, cause it’s ass-backwards. We have to start taking a precautionary principle, especially with this class of chemicals. They’re horrid. DD: Did you have any- you said that was number 1 concern that you had. LH: Number 1, we have to stop the exposures, yeah. And then, you know, then we have to look at clean up and that’s only once [chuckles] we can get the exposures stopped. Can’t clean it up if you’re still getting exposed. For here, for some place like Hoosick falls, we’re never gonna clean up our soil and stuff it just- you can’t dig down 30, 40 feet around every single house and bring us all new dirt, you know, so that won’t happen. And even though we have superfund sites, it only is site specific. We’ll only clean up around that site, not the homes 3 doors down from it, you know. So, you know, in stopping- I mean this stuff lasts forever, right? Its hundreds and hundreds of years in the soil, lord knows you can’t get it out of an entire aquifer, at least technology’s not there yet. Even trying to destroy it or, you know, burning it. We just had an issue nearby at Norlite, Cohoes and we found that they were burning it without telling anybody, the PFAS, A triple F foam. [laughs] So, that was a whole nightmare. The county executives put out a moratorium for a year to stop them from burning it, and then we passed a bill in New York State to ban burning it temporarily unless EPA comes up with some new-fangled method that would make it safe. So, this is- I often refer to PFAS as the mutant octopus, because once you think you’ve cut off one arm, 8 more grow out and it’s constant it’s always an evolving issue, it’s not a simple, ‘we can do this, this, this and have it stop’. Well, we did this and then 2 other issues came out of that and then once we did those, we got 4 more, so it’s a ever-evolving mutant octopus whose arms, they can never quite get wrapped around. So, it’s just regulation after regulation and hopefully they’ll smarten up and do them in a class and ban them, just ban them. DDT and PCB times 100, it’s that much worse. DD: Before we wrap up today, is there anything you’d like to add that we haven’t touched on or that you would like to go back to and say more about? 5 �LH: I think, you know, people don’t generally call their congress people for things. People are reluctant advocates, unless it’s an issue like this that hits close to home. I think the more people that yell, the better off we’ll be. The more pressure we put on them- elections matter. So, things that you might’ve taken for granted before, it’s time we step out of ourselves and start really yelling. And the more normal people- ‘normal’ [laughs]- ordinary citizens that say we’ve had enough of this, we’re sick of being- having all these toxic chemicals in our stuff, then that will change. And I think that those of us that’ve been advocating for this issue for the past 5 years have proven, we can make change. And we’re moms, we’re, you know, grandmas, we’re sisters, you know. We’re not anybody special, but it’s just a topic that hit us, and we proved that we can change, we can make change if we’re loud enough. So, I’d like to think that, as more people wake up to the nightmare of this, it’s in 49 states, everybody’s gonna be facing- if they look they’re finding it, so that’s the sad part, that everybody needs to just start yelling to make things happen, and it can be done. I think that’s it. And, you know, again we have to help our next generation, we have to help our children, we have to help our grandchildren. This just isn’t- and the more we learn about PFAS, suddenly the more you’re learning about other toxic chemicals that are coming to light, like phthalates and, you know, all these other things that are also harming endocrine systems and immune systems. You just can’t help but notice it when you’re reading health studies, these other ones pop up on the side, you know, and you’re like, ‘oh man BPA’ and you’re like, ‘ah geez we’re just- we’re screwed’ [laughs] and unless we make some changes, you know, you start with one issue and I still even have a hard time- this is like 30 hours a week on just a Twitter page reading health studies, I haven’t even delved into these other things yet but I know, you know, anything they have seen [unclear] immune system is horrific. But [chuckles] how did this happen, you know, how does this keep happening? It’s cause our laws are backwards. So, maybe, you know, that’s something everybody else can keep focusing on as we talk about climate change and effects of bad regulation or no regulation, this really needs to be looked at too, or we won’t be here for the climate to change, cause we’re all gonna have cancer and die, [laughter] you know.
