One of the boys went over to get the mail a short while ago. It was sunny and warm this morning but it’s now quite cold. Very cloudy too. I’m eating up my last box of vanilla cookies while writing this letter. I’ll be able to get more tho’ in another week or so. I suppose Shirley and Chuck are pretty happy about Christmas not being far off. Most children are. Is Joe home yet? I guess Norma’s on pins and needles waiting. I always will sweetheart. You mean everything to this faraway G.I. Wednesday morning, I took a train up north to a small town named Kawahe! I stayed overnight at a newspaper publisher’s house. They treated us very kindly. Two MP’s make the trip every day. Once in awhile, the Chinese cause a little trouble up there, that being the reason why we had to go. In the morning, I went to the local elementary school and said Good Morning to all the children. I rode around the town on a bicycle. While at the school, I gave the kids some candy I had. Gee, did [Page 2] 2. they go wild over it. Japanese children don’t have milk, meat, candy, etc. like we have. They have rice and maybe fish and a few vegetables for all three meals. Remember the photo I sent you. There’s an enlargement of it hanging in the studio now. I’m sending you one just like it soon. I know one Japanese song, and I’m learning some others. The Japanese people have very nice voices, especially the children. Those letters of yours were wonderful sweetest. They mean an awful lot to me. “Someday” isn’t too far off Jeannie. Everywhere you’ll find children asking for candy and gum. Last night’s movie was “Bride By Mistake.” I enjoyed it very much. Before the movie, we all heard a special “Bing Crosby Program.” It was super-elegant. He sang “Accentuate the Positive,” “Evelina”- “Here [Page 2] 2. lies Love,” “You Belong to My Heart,” “Dinah” and others. It was really something to hear. I’m very much in love with you Jeannie. You mean everything to this lonely G.I. You always will, ‘cause you’re so darn sweet and wonderful. “Someday”, we’ll spend all our nights together, instead of living them alone now. And how are we going to spend them? Well, you’ll probably suggest that we sit and talk about anything, but before you can get the words out, I’ll have you in a certain position where it’ll be quite impossible to say anything. (Slrrpp!! The content of Jean's letters describes everyday life of a teenage schoolgirl living in Cleveland, Ohio, with her parents during the war, including frequent mentions of friends, popular songs, movies, pets, and cooking, and visits to Edward's family, and her love for Edward. Edward's letters to Jean mostly concentrate on sentiments of love and the hope of marriage after the war. He also describes experiences and duties as he undergoes training with a variety of weapons and ordnance, his singing with a USO show, requests for transfer to the U.S. Army Air Corps, his volunteering for parachute infantry training, and descriptions of Nagoya during the American occupation of Japan. Both correspondents mention the anniversary of their first meeting (27 August 1943), and often use the word "Someday" in quotation marks which seems to refer to the then-popular song "Someday You'll Want Me to Want You." There is constant good-natured joking from both about the 28 children they will have once they are married. ean ("Jeannie") Allaine Worthington was born on 1 November 1928 in Cleveland, Ohio. Her parents were Archibald ("Archie") Augusta Worthington (1896-1979), a tool worker, and Lena L. Fritchell (1904-1985); she had one younger sister, Shirley C. Worthington (1934-2012). In 1945 and 1946 she was living with her parents at 14247 Superior Road, Cleveland Heights, Ohio. She met Edward Manley on 27 August 1943 in Cleveland when she was 14 and he was 16, but it does not seem likely they attended the same school. During 1945 she was attending high school and had a job after school. There is no evidence that they subsequently married; in Cleveland in 1971 or 1972 she married John Krasnicki, Sr. (1906-1986), who was twenty-two years her senior. She died on 8 September 1994 in Garfield Heights and is buried in Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland. Edward ("Ned") Arthur Manley was born on 25 December 1926 in Montréal, Quebec, Canada. His parents were Patrick Sanfield Manley (1895-1952), advertising manager for a Cleveland newspaper and Leonarda Gallagher Manley (1896-1970); he had five siblings: Edith Manley McNamara (1928-1958), John Vincent (1930-1988), Narda Patricia Daly (1931-2007), Alicia Ann Gramuglia (1932-2006), and Patrick A. (1934-2011). The family emigrated from Canada to the United States in the 1930s and by 1940 were living in Cleveland. Edward Manley enlisted in the U.S. Army as Private on 15 February 1945 in Cleveland; that same day he entrained for the Army Reception Center at Camp Atterbury, Indiana. In late February he had been assigned to Company B, 30th Battalion, 3rd Regiment at the Infantry Replacement Training Center at Fort McClellan, Alabama. A request to be transferred to the Army Air Corps was turned down. After a twelve-day furlough, Edward was transferred in late July to Company B-1-1, Army Ground Forces Replacement Depot No. 3 at Fort Riley, Kansas for a few days before being passed on to 3rd Platoon, Company M, 4th Regiment, Army Ground Forces Replacement Depot No. 2 at Fort Ord, California. In early August he was placed in 1st Platoon, Casual Company 12 in preparation for shipping out to Japan for occupation duties. By 13 September he was in Luzon in the Philippines as part of the 666 Replacement Company, A.P.O. 291, shortly to be assigned to Battery B, 8th Field Artillery Battalion, A.P.O. 25. Edward arrived in Japan in early October and was assigned to an antitank Company in the 27th Infantry Regiment. By the end of June 1946 he was still in Japan, but he repeats a rumor that they would be coming back the United States in October 1946. Manley was discharged in October 1946 and returned to California to find that Jean was engaged to be married to a man named "Shorty." Manley lost contact with Jean shortly thereafter. By 1952 he had moved to Los Angeles, California and at some point married Antoinette T. Manley (born 1940). They had one son, Darren Anthony Manley (born 1984). Edward applied for naturalization on 17 May 1945 in Anniston, Alabama while he was stationed at Fort McClellan, and became a U.S. citizen on 19 May 1945. Dorien noke zijn de grote bo~sdoeners. maar ik rPcel de zaken en i~ zal haar r eregeld o~zoeken. Leida had haar op Piet z'n verjaardag bloemen gebracht. Voor Leida heeft moeder een zw k plekje in haer hart. Ik vroeg of ik die bloemen voor haar mee zou nemen naar het ziekenhuis,maar dat mocht niet want in het ziekenhuis waren ze te oauw weg. Co je er mee acoord dat ik,voorlopig maar buiten moeder om, me met de directie van KranenbroPk versta om moeder op een kamer daar te krijgen zo geuw er een kamer ,,rij komt? Het zijn k~ ers met een eig~n toilet en een gelegenheid om zelf nog wat te ko~kerellen. Ze was iqterenavond to~n de dokter kwam~noc zo bij de tij dat ze duidelijk maakte d~t ze niet na8r het ziekenzaaltje van KranenbroFk wilde,want dat WRS te duur.Ze wilde tr~uwens ook niet naar het zieknnhuis mafr dat heeft dokter Schermerhorn toch marr d• oroezet. Hij scheen totaal vergeten te hebben , dat hij zijn zusters en zwagers noodig heeft gehad om directeur te worden na Vaders overlijden . De drie origineele ool1lillissarissen hadden Veerman willen hebben , als een zooveel oudere en meer ervaren oandidaat, maar onze family bracht in een meerderheid van stemmen , waardoor zijn benoeming plaats vond . Voordat wij naar America vertrokken , kwam hij naar ons toe en zei , dat .!!.!J n i e t ~ dat de aandeelen het land verlieten en mij als het ware dwong om ze over te geven , vergetende dat ik ook ~q de zaak h~d ewerkt voor kost en inwoniny en een zak~eld van Juni 1932 tot lJan . 1939 . Hij wist dat bij vergoeding had ontvangen of zeer binnenkort zou ontvangen voor de in de oorlog gevorderde auto,s, en door dit te verzwijgen ons zeer bewust benadeelde. lijda werd gedwongen om de aandeelen over te geven, omdat hij de "zaak ging verkoopen" en daardoor de aandeelen noodi had , De verkoop gine toen prompt niet door . Ik weet niet wat hij aan Corry heeft verteld om ze har afhandig te maken . Een ander vraag is hoeveel aandeelen had hij oorspronkelijk in zijn bezit. Als het er meer dan twee waren , waarom? Wij vertrokken naar Ameri$A, zooals jullie weten in Januari 1952, dus ruim 25 jaar geleden. In elk geval heeft Lyda een onderhoud gehad met Jaap in of voor 1973. met betrekking tot al dit , dit is een zoogenäamde rnondelinrestuiting( binnen JO jaar) . En dan nog adviseeren of dwingen(?) aan Moeder om de huisjes te verkoopen in Hillegom en de waarde te gebruiken voor een hypotheek aan een volkomen vreemde in ruil voor een vestigi~s vergunning voor hem zelf in Bergen. Deze transactie w~s niet in Moed rs belang , aangezien Piet en Lijda het initiatief hadden genomen in de Raad van Commissarissen voor een waardevast pensioen , ten voordeele van ~oeder . Hij benadeelde Moeder en daardoor de erven voor een aanzienlijk bed.ra~ . Onroerende goederen, zooals de huisjes in Hillegom zijn zeer in waarde gestegen(20x of meer) Dit ruikt naar misbruik van vertrouwen en ik ben dan ook zeer verontwaardigd . Iedere keer als ik er aan denk word ik kwaad , dat wij zoo beetgenomen zijn. Voeder en nu h&ar erven hebben nooit kunnen profiteeren van de meerwaarde van haar onroerend goed. Ik vraag me zelf dan ook af , moeten wij dit allemaal nemen? Na eenig nadenken zijn wij besloten om in Nederland advies in te winnen van een expert , buiten de fami _, om de zaak uit te zoeken en te tr chten dit als nog op te lossen in zoo goed mogelijke verstandhouding ~et alle partijen, en zoodoende voor de zusters eenig rechtsherstel te krijgen . Wij hebben inmiddels het eerste contact in deze richting gelegd. Familie aangeleg enheden van een meer plezi erige aard moeten wacht en op een volgende brief.
