Rhem Christ Community Church Spring Lake, Michigan June 27, 1999 Transcription of the spoken sermon All are welcome here - to this congregation; to our worship; to this Table of our Lord. Shouldn’t that be obvious? Isn’t that taken for granted? We are a Christian Church, after all; of course, all are welcome here, or should be. But, of course, it cannot be taken for granted and in practice it simply is not true for the Christian Church at large – All are not welcome, at least not unless they conform to whatever the prevailing ethos of a given Church may be. This is what made Jesus’ behavior so revolutionary - he broke the social customs, overturned the conventional wisdom, embraced all manner of persons and excluded none. That is old hat at Christ Community. The gracious acceptance of all has been a hallmark of this place for nearly three decades and the grace we have purveyed is the grace I personally received when in 1971 this congregation invited me to return to be their pastor, even though I was at that time going through a divorce and in a struggle for the custody of our children. In 1971 that was a daring decision. Divorce was still stigmatized in the Church and clergy divorce almost unheard of. I experienced grace tangibly; it changed my life and it became the mark of my ministry. When we speak of Christ Community as an alternative to Church as usual, that is what we point to - the grace that we offer to all and any who desire to be part of this community. For all these years I have been working out a theology of grace, discovering the implications of grace. Acceptance, embrace without fear of rejection - that’s what everyone desires and needs. Whether our lives unfold without a wrinkle or whether we find ourselves in a situation we never intended or could even conceive of, the one thing we desperately need, and the only thing that can heal us and move us on toward wholeness is the unconditional love and gracious acceptance by another and by a community which enables us to believe in ourselves and know we are valued. © Grand Valley State University   �All Are Welcome Here Richard A. Rhem Page 2   The Church has been very slow to learn this, act it out and thus mirror the grace that was lived out by Jesus. The Gospel lesson from Luke 15 portrays a conflict situation. Jesus’ open table fellowship, which was a hallmark of his ministry, demonstrating his embrace of all, caused the religious leaders to grumble and their grumbling triggered perhaps Jesus’ most memorable parable, called the parable of the prodigal son, although it is really a story of the unconditional love of God. The story is familiar; the younger son asks for and receives his portion of the father’s estate, goes off to a far country, spends all in reckless living and finally, hitting bottom, returns to the father to plead for mercy to be accepted as a hired servant. You know the story - the father sees the son coming while he is still afar off, runs to him, embraces him with tears of joy. No talk of servanthood; rather, the father orders a great party because his son has come home. The Gospel lesson then records the reaction of the elder brother who had stayed home, faithfully worked the farm and done it all right. He comes upon the party and he is angry, protesting to the father that in all his years of faithful service there had never been a party for him. And now this wild one returns and there is joy, music, dancing and a great feast. The elder brother, in spite of the father’s assurance of love and pleading that he join the party, refuses to go in. That was Jesus’ response to the religious leaders who grumbled at his open table, his inclusion of the excluded ones. And that story is the heart of the Gospel of the grace of God as understood in the Christian faith. It is also the understanding of God in what I think is one of the most beautiful portions of the Hebrew scripture - II Isaiah, where we find the Servant Songs, poems describing the mission of God’s servant. In 42:1-4, the servant is one who will not break a bruised reed or quench a dimly burning wick. It is not an accident that Jesus found his identity and the nature of his mission in those Servant Songs. Why is it that the Church acts more often in the spirit and posture of the elder brother? Why has the Church so often been marked by a judgmental spirit of condemnation and exclusion rather than by the gracious inclusivity that marked the life of Jesus? Why are we so threatened by those whose race or ethnicity or sexual orientation differs from ours? Why can we not see the common humanity that transcends such superficial and accidental differences? The religious grumblers of Luke 15 criticized Jesus for eating with tax collectors and sinners, but that was not a moral issue; rather, those excluded were ritually impure according to the religious practice of the day. In other words, they were different, they didn’t fit the mold. Why is grace so difficult to come by? © Grand Valley State University �All Are Welcome Here Richard A. Rhem Page 3   I mentioned the grace extended to me when I was called here, even though going through a divorce. A young couple came to me to be married; one from this congregation, one from another. The one from the other congregation acknowledged he had asked his pastor about being married by a divorced minister and he assured me that his pastor said that he could rest easy because in divorce, I must have been the innocent party. And I knew at that moment that that was wrong - I knew in that moment that a minister of the Gospel of the grace of God should have known that in human relationship there are no innocent parties, but even so, had I been the chief offender, would that have forever after made me a moral leper, unable to be a servant of Christ? Some years ago a fine Christian gentleman, a professional, came to me to acknowledge alcoholism. He sought treatment and was experiencing a solid recovering mode. He related how hurt he was when a Christian friend, a professional man, took him aside, assuring him that there was forgiveness. He didn’t need forgiveness; he needed recovery and, as AA demonstrates so powerfully, that comes best by the gracious acceptance of others who lay on no guilt, but give encouragement on the road to sobriety. I suspect there is no more volatile issue facing the institutional Church in its respective denominational groupings than the matter of sexual orientation. Denominations are in turmoil, threatening to split over the issue, clergy are being put on trial in ecclesiastical assemblies for blessing same-sex unions, and Church synods become battlegrounds between those who advocate the full recognition and rights of gay/lesbian people and those who condemn them. A week ago there was a piece in the Grand Rapids Press about the Christian Reformed Synod which called the Church to repentance for its failure to minister to gay/lesbian folk. But, the Synod affirmed a 1973 report on homosexuality that, for its time, was ahead of its time, but which still held that the expression of one’s sexuality in a same-sex relationship was sin. And then one of the more compassionate spokespersons explained the Synod’s counsel to the churches love the sinner, not the sin, and I just shook my head and murmured, "They just don’t get it." That won’t work. If my sexual orientation is a given and my expression of it is reflective of my person, you can’t love me but not my expression of who I am. What hurt, what pain we have inflicted on persons simply for being who they are. Professor David Myers of Hope College’s Psychology Department and a deeply committed Christian, has just written an excellent piece in Perspectives which I would be happy to pass along to any of you who honestly wonder about this matter. © Grand Valley State University �All Are Welcome Here Richard A. Rhem Page 4   ... Can we, should we, relax and believe that, regardless of our sexual orientation, God loves us "just as I am"? Can we accept our own and others’ sexual orientation without excusing promiscuity, exploitation, or self-destructive behavior? Can we regard bathhouses and brothels, gay bars and strip joints, as similarly degrading? Can we accept gays who, not given what Catholics call the gift of celibacy, elect the functional equivalent of marriage (which society denies them) over promiscuity? To merit our acceptance must they live alone? Can our family values include love, care, loyalty, and respect for a son or daughter who may be predisposed to homosexuality? And might we Christians benefit from praying Reinhold Niebuhr’s serenity prayer? God, give us grace to accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed, courage to change the things that should be changed, and the wisdom to distinguish the one from the other. This is Gay Pride Month. I’m sorry there needs to be such an observance, but until persons of homosexual orientation are treated as they are, simply human beings reflecting the diversity of human sexuality, such observances will be necessary. We’ve seen that lady of great dignity, Rosa Parks, in the news recently. She received the highest civilian award from the President for the part she played in the Civil Rights Movement, being the catalyst for black protest when one day she refused to go to the back of the bus. Can we even imagine the indignity of Jim Crow laws today? Look how long we lived with that horrible injustice inflicted on black people. And while racism is alive and well, no normal person with a modicum of humanity would think of reinstituting such racist legislation. And one day I trust it will be the same for people of homosexual orientation. Until then, the cause must be carried on by all people of good faith. We didn’t like Civil Rights marches and black power activity in the 60s’. We don’t like gays/lesbians acting up. We would rather coexist with injustice and inhumanity. But, the time is long overdue, and until the time comes, I will wear a ribbon as a sign of my commitment to equal rights for all people, in this case, for the gay/lesbian community. Martin Luther said, If I profess with the loudest voice and clearest exposition every portion of the truth of God except precisely that little point which the world and the devil are at that moment attacking, I am not confessing Christ, however boldly I may be professing Christ. Where the battle rages, there the loyalty of the soldier is proved. To be steady on all battle fronts besides is mere flight and disgrace if he flinches at that point. © Grand Valley State University �All Are Welcome Here Richard A. Rhem Page 5   This is not an optional issue for the Church; it is a test of its authenticity, of its commitment to justice and the grace of inclusiveness. Let me tell you honestly - I am sick at heart at the ignorance and arrogance of the Church. I nearly despair. I am torn, deeply torn. Were it not for this community and thus my experience of what a powerful influence for good, for human healing and well-being a faith community can be, I would leave the Church. I am so blessed to have this ministry. It is who I am; my best gifts are utilized, my passion given focus. But, were it not for you, I would give up. The whole family was there—aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws. They were all there one time or another. Some of the clan came after the morning service for coffee while the kids were in Sunday school. Others made their weekly pilgrimage to the five-acre celery farm on Sunday afternoon. A few stopped after the evening service. (It made me a little jealous that some of my cousins got to stay with Grandma during that evening service. She peeled apples and cut them up into quarters. Sometimes she could peel a whole apple without lifting the knife or breaking the long ribbon of red peeling.) Grandma was always at the center of things. Grandpa was off to the side a bit in his favorite chair, pipe stand at hand and several cans of Prince Albert nearby. The air was tinged with blue because he alternated between pipe and cigar, and the cigar was finally deposited in the bowl of the pipe to draw out its last glowing ashes. The atmosphere was always the same—warm, familiar, comfortable. Grandma was there and so love and security were there. It was family. There was one source of tension, however. There was a mixed marriage to contend with. One of my aunts had gone off and married a Christian Reformed boy from a couple of farms up the road. She joined the Christian Reformed Church but was never really converted. She grumbled about it a lot. And from that union sprang several cousins. The Christian Reformed Church did a good job on them. They never seemed to know there was anything else. Well, we lived in reasonable peace over the years of my childhood. When Grandpa or Grandma had birthdays we all got together, and that was something else. Once in a while the peace was shattered — when, for example, we got talking about the Christian school or the upcoming Hope-Calvin game. Then the atmosphere was warm too; in fact, sometimes it even got hot. © Grand Valley State University   �All in the Family Richard A. Rhem Page 2   Those occasional sharp confrontations were gathered up into a larger bond that had the toughness of love. I knew, without anyone ever telling me, that we were really all one – one family. We could argue, raise our voices or grumble at each other, but we belonged together; we belonged to each other. Now many years later in the midst of my ministry I find myself on a “Joint Christian Reformed-Reformed Church Committee for Study of a Theology of Evangelism.” My experience on this committee has reminded me of my experiences as a child in a family that had “mixed marriages.” There was always a little rivalry, little points of tension, sometimes confrontation and sharply differing perspectives. But, there was also always that sense of family. We belong to each other and that which makes us one family is of far greater import than the things that separate us. There are many mysteries in life, but one of the greatest is how two churches with the same national origins, the same polity, liturgical tradition and confessional allegiance have been able to go their separate ways for over a century. Yet even such a long period of separate existence has not been able to erase from our corporate consciousness that we belong together, that we belong to each other. Both denominations in their respective Synods of 1973 adopted recommendations that a joint committee be formed. The committees of each church responsible for Inter-Church relationships had been working together in “concentrated dialogue” since 1969. This dialogue had issued in a formal meeting of the two churches in the fall of 1972. The experience of that event was reflected in a Conference Statement, which gave thanks to God “for the unity he gave us during our deliberations.” The Conference heartily endorsed the following recommendations and covenanted together to implement them. 1. That we recognize, reaffirm and publish the positions taken by our respective Inter-Church Relations Committees in 1966 and 1987, the substance of which is herewith submitted: a. Joint work on liturgy to explore common concerns, suggest and foster similar patterns of worship and liturgy in our two churches. b. Joint planning be used in church extension to avoid overlapping so that Kingdom resources and witness be used most effectively. c. The encouragement of local exchanges between churches including pulpit fellowship. d. Overseas mission efforts done in a cooperative manner whenever possible. © Grand Valley State University �All in the Family Richard A. Rhem Page 3   There was much more to the Conference Statement dealing with cooperative efforts on the denominational, classical and congregational levels and in the area of publication. The statement ended with an eloquent call to action, pleading, The mercies of God that what we have envisioned we, together with many others, may now bring into being so that his name may be glorified, his church may be made victorious and his people may rejoice in the blessings that flow from the unity we seek. Against this background the Joint Committee CRC/RCA for Study of Theology of Evangelism was born. Five members from each church were appointed and the first meeting was held in December of 1973. Two churches in the Reformed tradition must necessarily discuss theology in any coming together. Furthermore, there is wisdom in focusing on the imperative that rests upon the whole church, the sharing of the Gospel with all men. Unity arises not so much out of discussion of abstract principles as out of engagement in the execution of the mission of Jesus Christ. Evangelism, telling good news in a world of bad news, is a natural place to begin to search for our unity. Happily, we on the joint committee can testify that we sensed a warm fellowship in our common search for some word to speak together concerning the grace of God which has appeared in Jesus Christ. The issue of our committee's work thus far is a Manifesto On Evangelism. That may seem to be a rather meager result. Yet, I think when the Manifesto is studied it will prove itself a carefully formulated and profoundly significant statement. In the preamble to the Manifesto, the committee acknowledged that it had narrowed its task to sharp focus, hoping to make a distinct contribution to current discussion from our Reformed perspective as well as lifting into prominence a theme which is central to the biblical revelation and strangely absent from much of the material on evangelism; that theme being the Kingdom of God. We were aware of other discussions on the theme of evangelism. We sensed a real struggle in the Christian community at two points: First, how are word and deed related in Christian witness? Is social action, born of Christian conviction, evangelism? Is evangelism oral testimony only, and are deeds of demonstrated Christian concern in connection with that testimony merely optional? But behind this tension lies a more fundamental concern. What is the word, the message, in evangelism? What is the message which deeds are to demonstrate? (Preamble to the Manifesto). It was the Committee's judgment that the historic Reformed accent on the Kingdom of God was a key to a meaningful solution to these questions. In various study papers prepared by members of the group the Kingdom theme surfaced again and again. Furthermore, we felt there was a lack of concern with the Kingdom idea in much contemporary discussion, although it is certainly a central © Grand Valley State University �All in the Family Richard A. We opted to make a concise statement which expresses our unity in the understanding of our evangelistic task as well as the central theme of our proclamation in word and deed. The Manifesto itself is divided into three sections: The proclamation of the Kingdom, the signs of the Kingdom and the imperative of the Kingdom. The opening paragraph evidences the inclusiveness of the Kingdom theme, which allows it to overcome the false antithesis between word and deed which has so long plagued the church. We share the newly expressed concern of believers everywhere to understand the nature of evangelism and its place in our total task. We deplore our own tendencies in thought and action to separate Gospel proclamation from compassionate ministry. We believe that both are rightly understood only in the light of the Bible's pervasive theme—the Kingdom of God. Strong proclamation of good news is immediately affirmed in the first section and that section is concluded with the statement “that all ‘evangelizing’ in the New Testament sense of the term includes the joyous proclamation of God's saving rule, together with the call to repent and believe the Gospel.” But the Manifesto continues in the second section, “the proclamation of God's Kingdom rule brings with it the reality proclaimed,” and after a discussion of what that entails specifically, we go on to affirm that all evangelizing in the New Testament sense of the term is accompanied by the signs of God’s Kingdom among his people and springs from their active concern for the full deliverance and restoration of all to whom the Gospel is addressed. The final section of the Manifesto deals with the imperative placed upon us in light of the Kingdom that has come in Jesus Christ for we testify to our conviction that “the Gospel of the Kingdom brings the only hope for lost mankind.” In our committee deliberations it was obvious that we were not all at the same place. It was obvious, too, that both churches were at different points, spoke out of differing contexts and had to speak to differing expectations and concerns. It was most interesting to observe, however, that differences of opinion did not always follow denominational lines. And perhaps the greatest realization to arise out of our study and discussion together was the fundamental unity that is ours both in our understanding of the Gospel and in the high sense of urgency in making it known to all men. The most significant feature of our joint committee is the fact that we are meeting each other, studying and praying together, enjoying table fellowship together and coming to appreciate each other. This has led us to recognize each other and the importance of working together in cooperative ventures, the utilizing of the resources of our respective churches to the greatest possible advantage and the seeking of a common purpose, the furtherance of God’s Kingdom in the world. But there is forgiveness with you, so that you may be revered. Psalm 130:3-4 God, be merciful to me, a sinner! I tell you this man went down to his hour justified … All who humble themselves will be exalted. Luke 18:13-14 I had an interesting week this past week. I received a sweatshirt with a cartoon on the front that had a dog, a Dalmatian, preaching, saying “Bad, Bad, Dog.” The dogs (Dalmatians) were lined in the pews and underneath it said, “Hell, Fire and Dalmatians.” (Laughter) I got a good laugh out of that and some warmth as well! I received some interesting letters, and notes too, very nice ones about last week’s sermon. Thank you for those. I received a pew card too. It raised a question about the mercy of God about which I spoke. The question was about the mercy of God in regard, for example, to a Hitler or to a Saddam Hussein (to update it a little bit). That question always arises when you talk about mercy in God, or sin in us. I would have thought perhaps that the paragraph in the bulletin by Carlyle Marney might have forestalled such a question. If you remember, he said: Man is the most dangerous and savage of the beasts: His bite is poisonous; his hand is a club; his foot is a weapon; knives, clubs, spears are projectiles to bear his hostility. Nothing in nature is so well equipped for hating or hurting. Confuse him and he may lash out at everything. Crowd him and he kills, robs, and destroys, for his crime rate increases in proportion to his crowding. Deprive him and he retaliates. Impoverish him and he burns villas in the night. Enslave him and he revolts. Pamper him and he may poison you. Hire him and he may hate both you and the work. Love him too possessively and he is never weaned. Deny him too early and he never learns to love. Put him in cities and all his animal nature comes out with perversions of every good thing. For greed, acquisitiveness, violence were © Grand Valley State University   �All is Grace Richard A. Rhem Page 2   so long his tools for jungle survival, that it is only by the hardest [effort] that these can be laid aside as weapons of his continued survival. Now, if we worry about a Hitler or a Saddam Hussein, our first problem is that we haven’t scratched ourselves - you see? Because, if you scratch yourself a little bit, you find most of the stuff there that is operative in Saddam Hussein. That’s a tough word to hear. But it’s true. Did you happen to catch 20 Minutes last week? They aired one of the most gripping segments I have ever seen. A Jewish psychiatrist, 50 years after the Holocaust and the horror of that Nazi Death March of the Jewish people, brought the children of some of Hitler’s henchmen together to talk for the first time since the end of the war. The children of the Nazi leaders, people now in their 60s, 70s were gathered to speak of their feelings and memories – the son, for example, of Martin Boermann and some other persons whose names I didn’t recognize. It was very moving. Martin Boermann’s son was I think a lad of 8 or 9, or maybe 14, when he had to come to terms with the fact that his father was a monster. Well, not a monster, but a human being who could sing hymns as well as organize the Death Camps. The son of Boermann converted to the Catholic faith and became a priest. I suppose he is living out his life as an atonement. There was a woman, I don’t know her name, who was moved to weep as she spoke of her fear that there might be something in her own genetic makeup that would emerge of the awful monstrousness that emerged in her father. Here they were 40-50 years later, human beings like you and me, sensitive human beings, feeling all the weight of that past. It is a tough word to receive that God has mercy even for the Hitler’s and Saddam Hussein’s. Just ask Jonah. Saddam Hussein is not the only person who has persecuted God’s people. There was the King of Nineveh, that gravely wicked city! Next to Nineveh, New York City is the jolly Big Apple. God saw the wickedness in Nineveh. Don’t get me wrong. It is not that there are not terrible, evil deeds perpetrated by the likes of us and by our brothers and sisters. God doesn’t like it. So sometimes God sends a preacher. He said to Jonah, “Things are rotten in Nineveh - go preach. Tell them to repent. Tell them that I, the Judge of all the earth, demand that they turn around in their tracks.” Nineveh was east. Jonah hopped a boat west. He didn’t want any of that preaching to Nineveh, because Nineveh was the enemy. The King of Nineveh the capital of Assyria, the oppressor of Israel, the decimator of the North Kingdom, the enemy, the adversary on the horizon. Let Nineveh go to hell! Nineveh conjuring up judgment for itself. “Ah-h-h, I can hardly wait,” says Jonah. God says, “Go preach to Nineveh.” Jonah says, “No way. I know you. I’ll preach. They’ll heed. They’ll repent, and you will forgive. No way!” So off to Tarshish he goes, in the direction of Spain. A little Mediterranean cruise, if you please. But, of course, the Lord God was not to be outfoxed by the likes of Jonah, and so God blew (phew) a little bit of wind. The sea turned. A shipwreck was imminent. All the sailors began to pray to their gods. The captain found © Grand Valley State University �All is Grace Richard A. Rhem Page 3   Jonah down in the hold of the ship asleep, drugged on his own anger and hostility. He said, “Hey man, get up and pray, if ever you’ve prayed. The situation is desperate!” And then they cast lots to see who might be the cause of this storm, and sure enough it fell to Jonah and Jonah said, “Yup, it’s me. It’s me. I am running from God.” And they said, “What should we do?” And he said, “Toss me over.” And they did. And the sea calmed - and all was fine. Jonah, going down into the depths, got swallowed in the belly of a whale. And there, amidst the digestion juices of the big fish, he had a little time to contemplate the call of God. Then God, feeling perhaps the prophet had finally gotten the point, God tickled the belly of the fish and he burped Jonah up on dry land, safe and sound, and said, “Would you like to go to Nineveh?” (Laughter) And to Nineveh he went. And he preached. And it was just as he said. They heeded. They repented. God forgave. And Jonah was so angry. God said, “Do you do well to be angry, Jonah?” “Yes, I do well! I knew what would happen. You are so soft. You are just a teddy bear. Just let people give a little inkling that they are turning to you, and you just open up your arms. Yes. And it makes me very angry!” So he went off and found the Pacific Palisades hotel, which overlooked the city. He thought he would see what was going to happen. Perched on a hillside, he built himself a little booth for shelter (it was a hot climate). God looked down and said, “Plant. Grow-big-fast.” The plant towered over the booth with shade. Jonah was happy as a lark. He thought he was poolside. The next morning God says, “Worm, eat the plant.” The plant dies. The sun beats down, mercilessly. Jonah can hardly stand it. God says, “Good morning Jonah. You’re angry. Do you do well to be angry?” “Yes, I’m angry!” says Jonah. God replies, “Jonah, you’re angry because a plant that you didn’t plant, didn’t nurture, grew up overnight and withered in a night. Jonah, how do you think I feel about the hundred and twenty thousand people in Nineveh, to say nothing of the cattle?” Now the parable of Jonah was told in the Post Exilic period after Judah came back from Babylon, came back from its exile experience. It was during this time that the Pharisaic Movement began - the separated ones who began to gather their skirts around them in righteousness. They punctiliously followed the law, the rituals, said their prayers, did everything that they were supposed to do as recorded in the prayer of the Pharisee of last week’s sermon. The righteous ones. The good ones. The serious ones. And as that society developed in a kind of narrow meanness of heart and spirit, somebody told the parable of Jonah. They told it in order to remind Israel, in its exclusiveness and narrowness, its nationalism which translated also into a kind of particularism of religion - God is bigger than that. God has mercy on all people. But Pharisaical particularism had become a dominant view in Jesus’ day, so it was to that group Jesus had to constantly defend himself. It was to that group that he had to vindicate the Gospel he proclaimed, as well as the behavior of his life. It was to the murmurers and the grumblers that Jesus had to constantly defend the fact that he received © Grand Valley State University �All is Grace Richard A. Rhem Page 4   all sorts of people. In his home synagogue in Nazareth he gave an inaugural sermon. They almost killed him because he indicated that the Grace of God was broader than the limits of Judaism. Jesus reflects that word of God, as shown in the parable of Jonah. It is in that context that he tells a story of a man who owned a vineyard, who went at 6 o’clock in the morning to the labor union office to find who was eligible for the day. He negotiated a contract with a bunch of workers and sent them out into the field. Twelve hours a denarius. “Is it a deal?” “It’s a deal.” Such a deal! Full day’s work full day’s pay. Honest wage for honest work. Everything fair and square. At about 9 o’clock in the morning on the way to coffee he saw a few more standing idle there and he said, “What are you guys doing?” And they said, “Well, we’re available.” “Well,” he said, “get into the field and I’ll make it right with you.” No written contract negotiation, no wage established. Just “I’ll do right by you.” At 12 o’clock the same thing. At 3 o’clock the same thing. At about 5 o’clock he was making his last pass and he saw a few more still standing there and he said, “Where have you guys been?” They said, “Well, the time before when you came we were in the ‘john’.” (Laughter) They didn’t say that, but they probably were, because they really didn’t want to work, they wanted to be able to go home to their wife and say, “There was no work today.” He said, “Get into the field.” So they worked for an hour and, when it came time to dole out the pay for the day, those who worked for an hour got a full day’s wage, and so did those who came at 3 o’clock, 12 o’clock, 9 o’clock and 6 o’clock. And those who were hired at 6 am and had worked a whole day and had worked under the sweat of the noontime heat, when they got the same wage as those who came at 5 pm, they were angry. Wouldn’t you have been angry? Be honest now, wouldn’t you have been angry? Every normal human instinct in you should rise up and say, “That’s not fair. That’s not just.” And that’s true. The owner of the vineyard said, “Look. Did we negotiate? Have I lived up to the contract? “Well, yes but. . .” “Am I not able to do what I wish with what is mine? Do you begrudge me my generosity? The anger that you are feeling is the anger that Jonah felt when wicked Nineveh repented and found Grace.” What is the image of God in this story of Jesus? Let me suggest this to you, that God is a promiscuous Lover. Do you know the word promiscuous? I didn’t say are you? I said do you know the word? (You should have laughed a little bit!) (Laughter) The word is usually identified with those of somewhat less than moral scruples. Do you know what the word means? Its root is in Latin. Miscere which is to mix or mingle. Promiscuous is to mix or mingle indiscriminately. That was the charge against the vineyard owner. That’s what makes people angry about God. God does not discriminate. God is indiscriminate. In the bestowal of God’s gifts, God’s Mercy, God’s Love, God’s Grace flows indiscriminately, mixing and mingling, with those who have some claim upon it, and those who have no claim upon it. God does not distinguish in the way we do, between those who are © Grand Valley State University �All is Grace Richard A. Rhem Page 5   worthy and worthless. Valuable and valueless. Good and evil. Black and white. With God there aren’t good guys and bad guys. God is promiscuous. And this made a Jonah angry. It made the religious leaders in Jesus’ day angry. And it still makes the church today angry. Listen to an interesting twist on the story told by Jesus. This is a true story recorded in the Jerusalem Talmud in about the year 350 A.D. Thus it is later than Jesus’ story, and so probably either working off the same story that perhaps had general circulation, or maybe an actual twisting of the same story of the vineyard owner. A rabbi, aged twenty-eight, died. He died on the day that his son was born. He was a very worthy rabbi. And so the rabbi’s colleagues gathered for his funeral. One of his colleagues gave the funeral oration, in which he told this similar story. Similar but with a twist. He said there was a householder who went out and engaged laborers for the day. As he observed their labor he saw one man that was tremendously industrious, competent, capable and fruitful. And after two hours of work, he went to that man and he said, “Come with me. Let us walk and talk today.” And so for the rest of the day they carried on conversation, walking and enjoying one another. It came the end of the day and the time for the pay, and the man who had walked with the master all day long after working only two hours got the same pay as those who labored all day. Those who had labored said, “Why should he get a full day’s pay, he only worked two hours?” And the householder said, “Because he did more in two hours than the rest of you did all day long.” In the funeral oration the rabbi said, “God took our young brother early because he was more fruitful in his short life than many gray-haired scholars who live a whole lifetime.” Now do you catch the twist? Do you see how the rabbi turned Jesus’ story on its head? In Jesus’ story the ones who went to work at 5 o’clock received a full day’s wage. And there was absolutely no justification for it. It shattered all conception of reason and justice and fairness. When the rabbi told the story about his brother, he had said, “Maybe God took him young, but it was because he was so worthy.” There are only two options, two worlds described in those two stories. In Jesus’ story, it is a world of promiscuous love, grace and mercy on behalf of a God who does not seek to justify such promiscuous ways. In the rabbi’s story there is perfect justification because the reward follows the merit. In the story of Jesus, God is a God of promiscuous mercy, grace and love who refuses to justify these ways, who simply says to those who complain, to those who are angry, “Do you begrudge my generosity?” And if we would be honest we would say, “Yes. Yes, God we begrudge your generosity. We don’t like that about you, and we don’t like a world that is run that way.” © Grand Valley State University �All is Grace Richard A. Rhem Page 6   Let me twist the knife one more time. Jesus told the story to vindicate the Gospel over against the Pharisees, the Jewish leaders of the day. But, by the time the Gospel of Matthew was written, we’ve moved two or three decades down the line, and those Gospel writers wrote and selected their stories for a reason. What they wanted to do was not simply tell this story about something that happened back there. They wanted to speak to the Church to whom they were writing. Now the story in Matthew’s Gospel is addressed not to the Pharisees; it’s addressed to the Church. It’s so easy for us to read our Bibles and say, “Oh those bad Pharisees,” and, “Ah, give it to them Jesus!” Oh no. Jesus had to tell the Pharisees. Matthew had to tell the Church. And I have to tell the church. I’ve got to tell you. If you have heard this story, you don’t like it. If you heard this story you can understand Jonah’s anger. Because this story says that God does not play fair. And the straighter you are, the more righteous you are, the more serious you are, the more industrious you are, the more you will be offended by God’s promiscuity. You simply won’t take it sitting down. This matter is so important because it is our image of God that influences our behavior. It is our image of God that shapes our spirit. And if our image of God is not the image of Jesus, then we are going to be reflecting something quite foreign to the Jesus whom we claim to follow. Shall I make it concrete for you? Let me give a contemporary example. Now I’m not a politician. I could never make it. But if I were a politician, and if I were a Republican, I would be extremely nervous about the inroads that the religious right is making into the Republican Party. Here is a paradox for you. It is fundamentalist Christian people that are influencing a political party and that are making a political party mean-spirited and divisive. It is Christian people. If I were a politician, and if I were a Republican, I would tremble before the prospect of Pat Robertson and Pat Buchanan setting the agenda for my party. If I allowed them to set the agenda, to take over, then the party of Abraham Lincoln would be no more. The spirit that they are spewing out is the spirit of Jonah, who gets very angry with all of the sinners out there and wants to draw nice clean lines between those who are worthy and those who are not, those who are right and those who are wrong. They would be terribly offended at a God that could be promiscuously gracious - across the board. Now - I’ve said it. Rhem November 1, 2009 O God, to You we lift our souls, to You we lift our hearts. The Psalmist wrote of the deer panting for streams of living water and saw himself mirrored in that thirst. We, too, thirst for You, O Living God, To know that You are; To sense Your presence; To rest in Your grace. As your people gathered here in this place, We would be still and know that You are God. We bring our thanksgiving In the conscious knowledge that all is grace The order of creation – We reset our clocks and watches To catch a bit more light in the morning, But Brother Sun and Sister Moon are affected not at all; Summer and Winter, Springtime and Harvest In passing parade proclaim Your great faithfulness. You are a God we can count on, Keeping this vast cosmos balanced on a razor’s edge, Just so, just right. And we breathe; Planets move in marvelous symphony; Salmon swim upstream; Birds migrate to warmer climes; Trees, so recently so richly garbed Now poke heavenward bony fingers, Warning of winter storms gathering, Their leafy coats of dazzling color now lying shredded on the ground. Rhem Like sand streaming through our fingers Is the passing of our lives, And we seem paralyzed, failing to grasp it. Where have the years of our lives gone, O God, Where have they gone? And what will become of us? Ah, Dear God, Creator, Lover of this world In all the wonder of its diversity, There is no shadow of turning in You. You, the eternal God, From Whom we have life, To Whom our life returns, In You we trust, in You we rest. All is grace. We give You thanks through Jesus Christ, our Lord. For these moments, let us quiet our minds, Letting go of concerns that burden us, Regrets that cripple us, Fears that paralyze us, Whatever is troubling us. Let us image that which causes gratitude to rise in us – The gift and grace of life; The sources of our joy; Those persons who make life rich. Let us call to mind those images which have shaped us – The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want; The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life, Of whom shall I be afraid? Come unto me, all you who are weary and heavy laden, And I will give you rest. Since God is for us, who can be against us? O God, Those words rise from our depths so naturally. O God It seems that, in moments like these When we purposefully, intentionally turn to you When we turn to whomever or whatever you are, We do so almost with a sigh, O God. For we know we are now in the zone of Mystery. There was something about Jesus when he prayed That caused the disciples to plead, Lord, teach us to pray. We plead, as well, O, God, teach us to pray. Once, perhaps, we came as suppliants To the Royal Throne of the Universe with requests We must admit on reflection were very self-centered, Reflecting a very small universe in which Our hopes and fears loomed very large. And still there are moments when we flee into your presence Totally occupied with our own concerns – Something that threatens us, or Some experience that crushes us, or Some potential happening that involves us in a loss we fear would undo us. And sometimes it is sheer joy, ecstasy, exhilaration That bursts forth in a torrent of praise, Shutting out everything else for the moment. But, more and more, we look not out there, But somehow within, into our own depths, Sensing we are connected deep down, rooted in Being itself, You being the inexhaustible Source and Ground of all that exists – The good earth, The starry heavens, The oceans’ tides And ourselves, conscious, aware, groping for some clue By which to know you, to rest in you, No longer strangers, but at home in the universe, At one with all that is. O God, how grateful we are for all we have shared, for all we have experienced together – grateful for friendship, for mutual trust, mutual caring, support and love. On this All Saints’ Day we remember those we’ve loved and lost awhile. We are grateful, O God, for the confidence with which we live and die, that to live is to live unto the Lord and to die is to die unto the Lord and therefore whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. We are grateful, O great Mystery of life, that we have been graced with a fundamental trust that this cosmic dance into which our lives are woven is not a tale told by an idiot full of sound and fury, signifying nothing, but a universe whose grain is love, whose end is life and light, a cosmos exploding before our eyes with marvels our forbears would not believe and we can hardly begin to comprehend. O God Our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Grant us joy and peace as in You We live and move and have our being, Confident we will never walk alone. From 1967 to 1969, Gilbert did several shoots, including that of folk singer Janis Ian for Life magazine. After moving to Chicago, Illinois in 1969 to attend the Illinois Institute of Technology, Gilbert conducted notable photo shoots of business and political figure Lenore Romney, and pursued more personal and artistic photography, focusing on urban and rural landscapes in Illinois and Michigan. He then joined the faculty of Wheaton College, where he taught from 1972 to 1982. In 1993, Gilbert graduated from Salem State College, Massachusetts, with a Masters in Social Work, and later pursued a second career as a psychotherapist. Douglas Gilbert died in June 2023. Ascension Day Sunday Text: Luke, 24:51; Romans 8:31-39 Richard A. Rhem Christ Community Church Spring Lake, Michigan May 23, 1993 Transcription of the spoken sermon …he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven. Luke 24:51 If God is for us, who is against us? …Christ Jesus…is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us….nothing in all creation can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:31-39 (Selected) This is Ascension Sunday. Some of you may have missed our service on Thursday evening. (Laughter) Well, I used to have to go to Ascension Day service. Someone asked me, “Do you have a service in your congregation on Ascension Day?” I said, “No. I love my wife, but to just preach to her alone wouldn’t turn me on.” (Laughter) You probably did miss the Ascension Day service, so we are going to do it today. We call it Ascension Sunday now, but Thursday was the 40th day after Easter. According to the way that Luke tells the story of Jesus there was resurrection on Easter morning, and then there was a period of time - 40 days – but that’s a period of time in biblical terminology, a period of time in which the risen one from the presence of God made an appearance to his disciples. Then, Luke tells us, those appearances ceased. He puts it on a timeline of 40 days, and then 10 days to Pentecost and the pouring out of the Spirit of God. So we celebrate Ascension Day in order to remember that the crucified one was exalted into the presence of God; that Jesus who was crucified was not only raised from the dead but was received into the presence of God, enthroned and empowered; that Jesus is in heaven with God for us on our behalf. According to the way that Luke tells the story, we have Jesus appearing to his disciples, but that appearance was the appearance of the resurrected one. Jesus didn’t have an address. He didn’t live someplace during that period of time. He always came from God. So the appearances of Jesus were the verification of the reality of his living presence with his disciples. The Christian Year is just about over. We are coming to the end of another cycle. But it is interesting that the story of Jesus as we celebrate it in the Christian Year is not a story that begins with the birth of Jesus. Rhem Page 2   Christian Year begins with Advent when we celebrate the fact that God will bring all things to completion. We celebrate our Christian hope in the first season of the year, and then we move to Christmas and the birth, and the life, and the death, and the resurrection of Jesus. In other words, the story of Jesus is the ground of our hope, and the fact that Jesus is exalted in the presence of God is the deep assurance with which we live. I want to say just a couple of things very briefly to you this morning. The first may seem obvious and unnecessary to say and yet I am going to say it: the exalted one is none other than the one who was crucified. It is Jesus who died who is in the presence of God. The exaltation of Jesus is the consequence of the life that Jesus lived – the way that he walked, the faith in which he believed. Paul tells us in his great hymn about Christ in Philippians 2 that he “humbled himself.” Paul says, quoting a hymn of the time that, Jesus humbled himself, took on the form of a servant, became obedient unto death, even death on the cross whereby, wherefore, God has highly exalted him and given him a name above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord to the glory of God.” The one who is exalted is the one who was crucified. I say that because sometimes I hear Christians talk as though it is possible in our present human experience to know victory and triumph. I remember a chorus from when I was a kid, “Victory in Jesus.” Sometimes I hear in some parts of the church a kind of triumphalistic attitude. Do you know that word? I looked it up in the dictionary. It’s not there! (Laughter) But it’s a word anyway. Triumphalism or a triumphalistic attitude is a kind of arrogant, superiority whereby we figure that we are on the winning team. You know - come to Jesus and be a winner. Join the church and be a part of the Christian movement, be “Number One.” It’s not true. Come to Jesus, and to the degree that you are faithful to the Way of Jesus, you might be a loser. Was Jesus a winner or loser? You say, “Well, he was a winner.” You know, “Crown him with many crowns. The lamb upon his throne.” I want to remind you on Ascension Sunday, that Jesus was a winner only because he was willing to be a loser. Jesus was a servant. Jesus went the way of suffering. He was a man of sorrow, despised and rejected. Jesus slugged it out and the world said ‘No’ to him. The world put him to death. And to the extent that the Christian Church today would follow the way of Jesus, I don’t think it would be any different. Young people, as you make your decisions, crucial decisions in your life right now, think long, decide carefully. It is so easy to just get caught up in the stream of things, unthinkingly making decisions, trying to be “Number One,” trying to capture the world. Suddenly you get yourself locked into a way of life and a structure of society. Then you get to be a doddering old fool like me and suddenly you say, “How can I get unlocked from all of this and really be what Jesus wants me to be?” © Grand Valley State University �All This and Heaven Too! Richard A. Rhem Page 3   Jesus was not a winner. Jesus was faithful to God. Jesus did all that he believed that God called him to be, and it got him a cross. We cannot leap over our present experience and grab that crown from Jesus and reign with him now. We are called to serve with him now, and if need be to suffer as he suffered. And if need be to go through crucifixion as he went through crucifixion because it is God who exalts the one who is willing to obey and follow - even to death. No cross. No crown. Don’t believe those superficial siren calls that say, “Come to Jesus and be a winner.” Well, that’s a downer. Want to reconsider? (Laughter) Is that all I have to say? No. I want to say this too, that in the meantime when you are slugging it out making the decisions that would honor Jesus and go the way of Jesus, you are not alone. Paul explained his understanding of the Christian faith in the letter to the Roman Church as fully as anywhere. Then when he concludes his exposition he says, “What shall we say to all these things?” That’s his question. “What shall we say to all these things?” He concludes, “If God is for us who can be against us?” There’s a promise for your confirmation and for us all. “If God be for you, who could be against you?” Then he summarizes all of the events we have just celebrated, for he says, “It is Christ who died, yea that was risen again, that is at the right hand of God who is praying for us.” Jesus in heaven, in the presence of God praying for us. Cheering you on. Encouraging you. Your cheerleader in heaven - one who has gone before you, who has gone through the cross, received the crown and is there in the presence of God and knows your name, and cares, and is with you and says to you what he knew so fully, “If God is with you, who could be against you?” Oh, you say, “But there’s a lot of things that could go wrong.” Paul knew that too. He says, “Famine, nakedness, persecution, sword, peril.” Well, what would be your list today? What things go wrong in our lives? Paul says, “It doesn’t matter.” Give the list however you want to construct it. Then he says, “Those things will never separate us from the love of Christ. We are more than conquerors through him who loved us,” but conquerors in the conflict and able to stand in the midst of the storm, able to stand against all of the pressures that would bring us in another way. You are not alone. God is for you. Jesus is praying for you. “There’s nothing that will ever separate you from the love of God.” That’s the way he concludes this chapter in some of the most beautiful lines that have ever been penned. He says, “Neither life nor death, nor principalities nor powers, nor things in the heights nor the depths, angels, things present, things to come, nothing in all creation will be able to separate you from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” You have all you need here and now to follow the way of Jesus in spite of the cost, in full light of the cross. But even that is not all I can say, because the exaltation of Jesus is a sign to us that this is not all there is. Rhem Page 4   I was really moved last week at how deeply so many of you were moved at the song of Eric Clapton, “Tears in Heaven.” It reminded me that down beneath our education and our sophistication and our kind of natural reserve for one another the hearts of us all are haunted by heaven. The longing of us all deep down is to know that this is not all that there is. Jesus is in the presence of God, through the cross, receiving the crown. We can’t claim the crown today. Ours is still the way of the cross, but beyond that we have one waiting for us, preparing a place for us. The promise of Jesus in heaven is the promise of heaven for those that follow Jesus. Jesus with us here. We with Jesus there. All of this. All of this and heaven too!
