We are delighted by your interest and hopeful that you will be able to help us in strategically taking this unique project to scale nationally and internationally. Enclosed are materials that may be helpful. They include:  A brief public relations brochure introducing the project. On the back of the brochure is our web-site. You will find the full text of the case statement for the project and other useful information at this site.  The DRAFT set of themes that are the organizing structure for the curriculum development. These describe what we hope the student will know and be able to do at grades 5, 8, and 11. We are in the process of developing standardized student achievement tests based on these themes. In addition, the lessons being created will teach the learning outcomes identified.  Two samples of high school level lessons. These are original works created by classroom teachers. They have been piloted, reviewed by an independent Fairness Review Committee, field-tested in the classrooms of teachers not involved with the project, and edited against state and national educational standards. They are designed to be infused in to the current educational curriculum, not layered on top. We currently have 100 of these tested lessons, K-12, public and private schools. Another 300+ are in the process of development. We will be adding approximately 300-500 lessons to the pool each year.  The most recent project report on all of the components of this effort. �Mr. E.C. Stone Archetech, Inc. August 13, 1999 Page 2 We are completing the end of our research and design phase. While we will continue to develop the curriculum, lessons, and teaching support materials, we now know that we have a solid and unique effort. We are moving in the direction of expanding the professional development and training components. In addition, we have a sense of the size, depth, and the amount of time it will take to truly infuse this new curriculum in to Michigan, other states, and internationally. We are particularly intrigued, and naïve, about the opportunities available through electronic technologies and commerce for the materials we are creating. In particular we are interested in the following areas related to technology: Would a high tech firm be willing to join us as a corporate sponsor, both in financial support for the electronic distribution of our materials, and in offering expertise in how to utilize the world wide web, CD-ROM, online chat rooms, etc. as educational tools and distribution channels for our materials? We have seen MCI sponsorship of similar efforts in history, economics, and geography. We believe we have a far more unique product with a socially important and highly attractive public relations value to a company. We need to do a strategic and a business plan. We believe we may have foundation support for another seven-ten years to help us launch this effort. But, we will need to be self-supporting (at least for our core operations) at the end of this start-up period. (You might think of the foundations as long-term venture capitalists willing to invest in the R and D of a new effort and to help us through the initial start-up phase). Between now and May 2000, we want to go through an exercise to help us determine: our market niches, what products we would sell and which ones we will give away, where we might find long-term sponsorship and support, how we might maximize e-commerce as the educational community becomes more computer literate, how to market or establish copyright and royalty relationships for the original work that is being created, etc. We hope to take a strategic and a business plan to our May 2000 Steering Committee Meeting. Deliverable 1 Archetech will solicit partnerships with cornerstone companies in the form of joint venture or licensing arrangement to underwrite: 1. Yr 2000 curriculum content creation - This funding would allow EPP to accelerate and complete content creation, and ($1 million projected) 2. Phase II business plan development costs - legal, sales, promotion, travel, professional fees, web site development etc. ($200,000 projected) Status Business realities require a revision to both components of this deliverable. When the strategic plan was adopted, it was understood that we would need to develop a Web based business model. However, it was not clear that EPP was incubated as a demonstration project in the philanthropy industry with a “if we build it, they will come” plan for subsequent integration into the education industry. Indeed, the original plan to “one off” state and individual school districts was not sensitive to education market dynamics. However, to attract potential partners to maximize the scale and scope of a Web based business, we need both a macro view of and compelling linkage to current and future education markets. To address the problem, since education market data is necessary for both components of this deliverable, AT is empanelling a group of business resources (see # 4) in the education field to conceptualize the plan in advance of its actual production. Assuming the group concurs on a feasible business model (which is likely), the group will facilitate its implementation. Under this schedule, funding the curriculum content will be a line item of the business plan. If necessary, separate funding development of the business plan should be achievable with a preliminary business model in hand. This revision should compress the schedule for production of the ultimate business plan by allowing us to implement Stage 1 findings in Stage 2. This objective is in accord with both the conclusions reached at a Strategic Planning Meeting of the EPP held on December 7, 1999, chaired by Dr. Russell Mawby, and with EPP’s goal of planning for the long term teaching of philanthropy beyond grant funding. Background In Phase 1 of its business operations, EPP successfully demonstrated the existence of a market for philanthropy education products and its ability to access the market through the K-12 educational system. In addition, EPP’s value added approach to teaching philanthropy by infusing it into existing curriculum was validated in Phase One as a viable methodology. In its next stage of development, EPP’s primary business challenge will be to assure the project’s long term sustainability by commercializing aspects of the project that permit EPP to transition from grant funding to earned income. This objective needs to be accomplished without compromising EPP’s current and future not-for-profit franchise value. Toward that end, EPP has adopted a business strategy utilizing the World Wide Web as a primary access and distribution channel for EPP products and services. This business model positions EPP to: • maintain and sustain its not-for-profit identity in the short and long term • generate revenues through commercialization of marketing and distribution activities • maintain its operational focus on the design and creation all components of philanthropy education including lessons, books, learning tools, collateral materials etc. K-12 Education in Philanthropy Project (EPP) seeks to perpetuate a civil society by the education of children about the independent sector, and to inspire their commitment to private citizen action intended for the common good. 1 The �2 • maximize the scale and scope of the project while minimizing exposure to high level of risks associated with startup businesses. PROPOSAL Archetech LLC will assist EPP to identify strategic partnerships to fund and develop a philanthropy education vertical portal to serve as a hub for information dissemination and commerce. Partnership Criteria AT will target cornerstone companies for partnership who: • place a high value on reaching the educational community marketplace • offer products or services compatible with EPP mission • offer premier name or branding value to partnership • premier companies who value stewardship identity These partnerships will be structured to provide EPP with: • revenue sharing as a result of advertising and products or services sold • symbiotic or other non-monetary value such as desired technology or intellectual property • new content or other collateral material AT will not solicit partnerships from any companies that produce or advocate products that are harmful to children, illegal, discriminate or are deemed inappropriate by social practice. In addition to its own resources, AT will aggregate and coordinate priority contact information from the EPP and CMF communities as necessary to expand and refine project sales activities. Deliverables To achieve this objective, Archetech LLC will deliver EPP a mix of professional services in stages as described below. While this schedule and action plan serves as a starting point, uncertainties in the development process require the plan to thought of as a fluid work in progress at all times. The objectives of this initial phase meeting were to: • compile and prioritize relevant project materials, • process understandings and assumptions of the principals • identify target markets and potential strategic distribution partners • identify financial incentives and variables. Archetech LLC provided support to the meeting by: • preparing the agenda • presenting the preliminary agenda to EPP for inputs and approval • preparing materials and distributed them to the participants • facilitating the meeting • preparing the following report of findings and recommendations. PRIMARY CONSIDERATION The steering committee emphasized the importance of developing products and services that are philosophically consistent with organization’s mission statement: The K-12 Education in Philanthropy Project (EPP) seeks to perpetuate a civil society by the education of children about the independent sector, and to inspire their commitment to private citizen action intended for the common good. FINDINGS OF THE MEETING (by topic) 1) Mission a) Build on the EPP’s franchise value. EPP has created content and a reputation as the leader in its field. EPP has the “formula.” It needs to standardize, leverage and franchise it. b) EPP should remain a content provider and create strategic relationships that facilitate the manufacture and distribution of its content �2 c) EPP should not form a for-profit entity (start-up business) in the foreseeable future to commercialize its content. 2) 3) Content / R & D a) The project has created a “value added” curriculum..enhancing what is already taught in schools rather than adding a totally new component b) The content will be given away and not sold. Collateral materials will be sold. c) The development methodology – using teachers to create the content and endorse the product – is the authentic and correct approach d) The product to be offered by EPP is not ready for the market at this time. Additional development is needed to create complete content that can be distributed as modules. EPP currently has lesson plans that need to beincorporated into a curriculum. e) EPP’s content should include: i) K-12 philanthropic curriculum. ii) Collateral materials. iii) An interactive web site, with a “game” environment deemed “safe for students,” that will attract the 58 million-plus student market. iv) A parent web site that attracts the 87 million-plus parent market. Markets a) Schools i) K-12 and beyond ii) Home schools iii) Charter schools b) Parents c) Students 4) Distribution a) The primary distribution channel should be the World Wide Web. This creates an international presence overnight and eliminates a number of the challenges that would be created by rolling out the program state-by-state. An e-commerce model will be created to sell the collateral materials and a sponsorship (advertising) model will be developed as a way to distribute the content 5) Finance a) Funding to complete the content should be obtained from traditional sources –foundations – because they are more patient and understand the project. This is not to say we will not seek strategic relationships to fund research and development; however, this will not be the focus. Foundations represent the short-term path to sustaining the enterprise. The long-term goal is to add to the funding significantly through strategic alliances, licensing and marketing arrangements. �3 Because ongoing content development is the key to success, both avenues should be pursued on parallel. * Many good ideas proposed at the meeting are not included in this summary report, but should be extracted from the notes of the meeting and incorporated in future planning strategies. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR NEXT STEPS (by topic) 1.) They will most likely do focus groups, at their expense, to answer this question. The K-12 Education in Philanthropy Project set out to expand the popular definition of philanthropy and to take this ambitious project into schools and homes throughout the nation, and the world. The broad definition includes the giving of time, talent, and private citizen action for the common good, without regard for the age or economic status of the giver. The visionary nature of the project has been based on organizing a movement, rather than to sell products. The founders have been motivated by the “felt need” of their own experience in working closely with youth for over a decade, and their combined expertise in leading and funding national social change efforts. As we seek to expand the project, we are reaching out for help in designing our business strategy. We realize we are selling ideas and behaviors, as well as potential tangible products. Pundits might even call us “social entrepreneurs.” We need to translate the successful research and development results or our first three years, in to a self-sustaining endeavor of national and inter-national scale. Following is a status report on each aspect of the project: Curriculum Products Standards, strands, benchmarks (This is the written set of learning expectations defining what students should know about philanthropy and be able to do by grades 5, 8, and 11.) There are four major “standards”. Within each standard, there are a series of sub-groups of ideas further refining what should be known. Finally, under each of the strands are a series of very specific benchmarks that define what the student should know. This work is completed and now needs to be edited. An overview of the Standards and Strands and a sample of the benchmarks follows at the end of this paper. Over the summer of 2000, the elementary teachers (Grades K-5) will be developing a grade level by grade level set of outcomes that build toward the fifth grade benchmark. Sample lesson plans. This work is 50 percent completed. We expect to have them completed by June 2001 or sooner. Over one hundred lessons are finished and are on the Web-site. Speed of completion is a function of finances. We have the lesson plan writers available but cannot afford to hire them full-time for a year, which is what the project will take to complete the sample lessons quickly. �Service-learning/experiential component. While the project is focused on concepts and ideas, within each unit there is a “hands-on” experiential component called service-learning. For example, a unit on the role and history of the Red Cross may have the students spend a day working on stocking a food cabinet in support of disaster relief at the local Red Cross Chapter. Each unit has this component. Family support. Starting this summer, “Family Recipes” are being infused into current curriculum as a value-add. These provide families with specific ideas for assisting their child in learning the philanthropy content. National lesson plan competition. The competition is being launched with the Spring 2000 newsletter. Standardized Assessments 1) Developing ability to move into national standardized tests. The Test is designed and half the questions are written. 2) We plan to pilot-test the questions on students in the fall of 2000. 3) We plan to assemble three test booklets and field-test them nationally during the winter of 2001. The final product will be two validated test booklets for grades 5, 8 and 11 (for a total of six tests) plus banked, validated questions for future tests. Teacher Development All lessons are written by practicing classroom teachers who work in an environment of strong state-mandated learning objectives. The state objectives closely parallel the national educational proposed standards. Teacher Testing of Lessons as a Buy-In Strategy Each lesson is being field-tested by five other teachers: three in Michigan, two in other states. Nine hundred teachers from 36 states have volunteered to field-test. Curriculum Support Products Definitions for Students The initial list is completed and on the World Wide Web site: K12edphil.org Lexicon for Teachers The initial list is being compiled and attached to the curriculum. Briefing Papers for Teachers Eighteen are completed and on the Web. Twenty more are in process. Bibliographies We have completed the annotated children’s literature by grade level. Teacher bibliography is completed, on the Web and being updated. �Timeline Philanthropy timelines, historic events, initial U.S. history, world history, Michigan history are completed and on the Web. Biographies (people and organizations) Ten are completed and being edited. Nonprofit Careers Internet Links to related web-sites on nonprofit careers. Lending Library of Books and Materials/Web sales This component of the project, which has enormous long-term potential, is under development. Videos of Leading Nonprofit Thinkers We are compiling a bank of videos about leading nonprofit thought-leaders. John Gardner, founder of Common Cause, and the Independent Sector is completed. A Russ Mawby, Chairman Emeritus of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation video needs editing, for example. Textbook, Teacher Guide, Student Guide and CD-ROM The book outline, book development and CD-ROM development process are completed. We need approximately $400,000 and a publisher in order to write and produce the book. The book will have content in economics, geography, government, history, English language arts and visual and performing arts. Calendar of Annual Philanthropy Dates A month by month calendar of the annual dates celebrated in the general culture (Memorial Day), days specific to philanthropy (Make a Difference Day), and other related days (Kawanza) and how these days might be used to teach philanthropic behavior. Ready for final editing. Wish List Following is a list of ideas we could produce with time and support: 1) Original children’s literature. 2) Original theater, music, dance, movies. A Chicago musician is writing original music. He will share the print versions for our newsletter for the option of advertising. We would like to buy the permanent royalty rights. He is willing to compose and perform the music on video and audio-tape, provide the print music and a teacher lesson guide for $10,000 per song for the permanent royalty rights. 3) Print possibilities: Classroom posters and materials. Workbooks. Games. �Collateral material such as T-shirts, bags, coffee mugs, etc. Teacher Professional Development (could be both vehicle and a product) Summer Residential Institutes Summer 1999 30 new teachers/CEU and graduate credit was offered. Each teacher produced a new unit for the curriculum. Summer 2000 50 new teachers scheduled for Michigan. 30 new teachers scheduled for Kansas. 20 new teachers potentially from another Michigan county. Four additional counties interested in involvement during the 2000-2001 school year. Philanthropy Educators Association The membership association, with special Web access, is under development and will be announced at the summer institutes. Market research is completed on a selected group of related national and state professional educators’ associations that will inform our work. Inservice and Curriculum Development, district by district Michigan districts currently interested include Calhoun, Eaton, Marquette and Berrien counties. Private foundations will support this effort. Masters Degree Program Discussion is underway with Ferris State University. Michigan produces one out of every 10 teachers in the nation and has major teacher education programs. Michigan State University (which is evaluating this project) has the No. 1 college of education in the country. Undergraduate Teacher Preparation The preparation will be conducted within the disciplines in colleges of education. This is currently under discussion with Grand Valley State University. Along the way, we realized our project was becoming a movement. And now we have the potential to spread our work around the world. Those of us involved in the surprising evolution of our project are excited about the possibility of bringing in other organizations to share in our efforts to produce a more civil society. While debate may rage in the $980 billion U.S. education industry about effective delivery models for the future, the Council of Michigan Foundations (CMF) has created a solid foundation on the World Wide Web for its K-12 Education in Philanthropy Project. Already, the project – which set out to revolutionize the teaching of philanthropic principles to children – is reaching tens of thousands of children and educators, both in the United States and internationally. The potential of the CMF project, initially funded by the Kellogg Foundation and other national charitable foundations, has created an extraordinary opportunity for businesses to establish a real foundation for a more civil society. We are inviting select organizations to join with us. The CMF is creating a 501 (C) 3 business consortium composed of several of America’s leading institutions, including corporate sponsors, a production company, a national service club and major research universities. The consortium will sponsor and manage development of a state-of-the-art Website to deliver the project’s programming and curriculum. The companies that become associated with the site, through sponsorship, will accrue prestige and a large measure of good will. The K-12 Education in Philanthropy Project was incubated in response to growing cynicism and declining philanthropic participation in society. Its goals were to expand the popular definition of philanthropy to include the giving of time and talent, no matter the age or economic status of the giver, and to take the project into schools and homes throughout the nation, involving families as well as students and teachers. Through its early Website (www.k12edphil.org) and extensive lesson planning and writing, the project already has reached thousands of people. New work is being added to the site constantly. The project’s national potential is more than 100 million students and teachers, a staggering value for low-key advertising. The project was born in Information Age technology, going straight to the World Wide Web for delivery potential without boundaries. �Yet its purpose is as old-fashioned as family and community values, using the private sector to spread the word about the power of taking action for the common good through the independent sector – the nonprofit arena that has produced so many benefits for the life to the United States. Marketing must be financed Teacher involvement in the lesson development has been important because of the authenticity of the lessons and units to the target teachers Question: Is the product ready to go to market? Is it being developed appropriately? Important to establish a clear set of goals for 3 years from now…. 5 years from now. Discussion If the mission is to change children’s learning: knowledge, action, and values that do not define the process…..only the outcome. There should be three distinct elements: Content, Process, and Scale. Each phase of the project development should be addressed in each area. For example, we have used a Request for Proposal process to recruit teachers…maybe a similar process should be used for dissemination of the lessons and units. Question: who are the vendors we might go to, who could take the project to scale? Perhaps we could develop a process to reflect the values of decentralization through an RFP structure where we would set the quality standards. Reliance on technology is one way to grow to scale. Sponsorships are another process. *The curriculum will always be incomplete and changing. Page 1 �We do not yet have a complete product because no school is teaching the lessons in an articulated fashion grade to grade. This needs to be a part of the continuing Research and Development of phase 2. It will take 13 years from the start of the first articulation to begin to know the impact of lesson taught every year. We need to remember that most of a child’s life is lived outside of the classroom. The products under development are dynamic and not static. There are both tangible and intangible products. The tangibles have been in the first phase with the development of lessons. The intangibles need to come with the development of a network of people who get it that this is an issue. Growing the networks helps to create a movement. Financial stability may take more than 5 years We must remember that education is a whole decentralized marketplace….our motives and credibility are key elements of acceptance in such a marketplace A unique feature of our current strategy is that those who will use the product, the teachers, are creating the product School administrators are important to the project because they give teachers permission to act to incorporate the philanthropy curriculum Our challenge is on the demand side. We have created a product and must now create the demand. Students and youth think differently than adults and they represent a distinct market One role for the project would be to become the “Good Housekeeping” standard for approval of philanthropy education in a decentralized market. We set the standard. The Project could become the “due diligence” for including programs in schools. Should we charge for the lessons, or give them away and then charge for the “upgrade”? Maybe we should send out RFP’s to teachers to complete the curriculum with lessons for all of the themes? Who are the people who can purchase the curriculum/lessons, etc? Teachers, principals, schools? The Project has created a “value added” curriculum…enhancing what is already taught in schools rather than adding in a totally new component Page 2 �MODELS There are three models for commercialization 1. Sell a Product (process/curriculum) Continue foundation funding Disseminate through nonprofits/corporations Risk confusing the audience Issues in this model: The curriculum has been developed as “freeware” Possible change of focus by charging would be confusing May confuse funding sources unless handled well 2. Find a Different Vehicle for Distribution Embed the curriculum in textbooks Develop a stand-alone textbook This would include Sponsorships, e-commerce, and royalty arrangements with publishers for the content…payment for collateral teaching materials 3. Collateral’s Developed on the Service Side Develop a train the trainer model 4. Peer-Revenue Model Looks at product, distribution, customers, and ongoing value Does “it” have value? Who is “it” valuable to? Teacher Student Administration Parents Corporate America Public Sector Broad appeal and mass market? Will people pay for “it”? Teachers-are not a big market for curriculum directly. They are buyers of collateral material, and they influence the purchasers in their schools Students-no, not directly of school curriculum Administrators-have the power to purchase, and often delegate this authority to teachers in their buildings Role of the state-is on multiple levels, both public policy supporting the Project goals, and the ability to purchase teaching materials Page 3 �Teacher will buy graduate credit for professional development. Where there is big competition (such as graduate education) the Project can become the content provider to another large education system. Parents-home schooling is a large potential market Charter schools are another The home school market could be reached via the web Private sector-potential sponsorships with distribution for free to teachers The corporation gets advertising and good will for their money They will pay for the number of web-“hits” per page with their ads Public sector-revenue sources include governmental funding Foundation support-will be needed for several years Youth Market-needs development. Has great potential for the use of new technologies/video games, computer games, Internet delivery The Project should lock-in alternative web names: edphil.org; edphil.com; edphil.net Research and Development needs to continue. The traditional sources need to support the continued R and D. Two fold organizational structure recommended. Project Becomes a Content Research and Development organization. We could establish a start-up for profit arm to handle the distribution. There are many disadvantages and we do not need to do this to accomplish the goals. Instead develop licensing arrangements with strategic partners who specialize in distribution such as publishers, booksellers, and web-commerce. Use royalties, advertising fees, and licensing and revenue generators to support continued R and D. Allow for multiple relationships to develop in different parts of the field. Suggestion: add one staff person to be responsible for licensing and distribution Develop a distribution matrix that matches the right audience to the correct distribution network. Internet Impact on Distribution Networks The Internet has change distribution patterns……recommendation is to go after Internet providers for sponsorships….keep the lessons and “it” as “freeware” for teachers and students. Page 4 �Charge for “click-through”…when the web page is “hit” through revenue from advertisers, especially advertisers wishing to reach the education audience There are 53 million students. The student market is huge and needs to be considered. Products should be developed to be used all the way through adulthood. The next phase of R and D would be to create the materials as web-based. Involve a number of students in learning through a game. Provide a “safe haven” on the net for youth to learn this material in an interactive way. On the core curriculum…..create those things that will be useful for sponsorship-this helps to open doors to potential sponsors CORE CURRICULUM---as a basis for WEB DISTRIBUTION----to parents, students, and teachers directly. Web hits are paid to the project. The Project is probably not yet ready for the web. The next R and D should be to become web-ready. Then get sponsorships to continue the R and D. Early inkind service might be available such as computers or loaned executive time for web developers. Strategy will be to go step by step….building philanthropy. We need to accelerate the pace of development and the packaging. There is “franchise value” now, even though the product isn’t finished. R and D capability and the value of the product attracts foundation support. The product is being developed authentically by teachers. The Project is creating the standards to franchise. Decision: make the “it” a web product suitable for sponsorship Start talking to potential sponsors now. The long-term sales cycle can generate substantial money that can be used for future R and D. Use the technology to get directly to youth…although this is extremely competitive, we have a unique product. The Project would be content providers to technology vendors who would develop the actual system for reaching youth. Two pronged approach suggested: Complete the R and D with traditional funding sources/multiply the products/create goals for each consumer group/continue the R and D function Second, begin looking for sponsorships and strategic alliances. Provides for instant international dissemination. Suggested rational for utilizing foundation funding for R and D: Page 5 �Market infiltration-the web allows for isolated teachers to have conversations with peers Planning-planning time is helpful to allow the schools time to process new ideas Mistakes-foundations will be more tolerant of early errors during the creative process Core overhead-foundations can support the talent needed to work on the project Quality-foundation funds allow time and space to “do it right”. This situation would be a classic Program Related Investment (PRI) opportunity for a large private foundation Student market-is the biggest market and is ripe for sponsorship…could be a joint venture…games, chat rooms, interactive games The database developed may end up as one of the most important products Also, could continue the RFP process with parents, students, and teachers to create the web-site. A part of the standard setting would be to include those who use the content in the development of the content There is real advantage in working directly with the teachers and students, bypassing the schools as “wholesalers” of education. We could RFP out the final development by segmenting the work-either by grade band, or benchmark. Then the Project would give the stamp of approval. The Project needs to address both continued R and D on all of the content….and to develop student materials that would be “quick to the web”. In developing materials, the goal would be to always prepare the curriculum to be able to be disseminated on the web. Need a business plan for both components….the R and D organization with traditional funding, and the web based commerce with licensure and sponsorship agreements. Needs to be a product by product plan. Take winning ideas early to the market. Develop a wish list for products and a timeline for funding. Questions Should this Project stay at CMF? What might be the criteria for its organizational location? We need to have this discussion sometime. In the first 6-12 months of the next cycle, this might be answered. The focus is more important on the money and the products, rather than name and location. May need a Membership Society to help sustain the Project. The membership society should exist for the support of the Project, and not the other way around. If the Project leaves CMF, it should go some place with particular stature…such as the Smithsonian…..rather than other related nonprofit organizations. Page 6 �Should we continue with the K-12 part of the name? Should we continue to use the word philanthropy? Or should we move to the “common good”? We need some demonstration schools to pilot depth in the curriculum. For the sponsorship, we should be sure to only solicit America’s most admired companies. Don’t limit the Project to K-12 education. There should be multiple paths…the project is about civic renewal and doing things for kids, not education reform. It may be important to get to the prime time media, soup operas and popular culture. The program elements and the content are important and could teach philanthropy. Need to get the business numbers in place in order to make appropriate corporate calls for sponsorships. These positions are Project Director, Curriculum Specialist, and Secretary. There are also some small support costs for assistance from the Council of Michigan Foundations. These are, for example, a small percentage of the Financial Director’s costs for handling all of the financial management and reporting. OFFICE AND CONSULTATION: This line item includes the office support costs for staff, mailing, telephone communications, a legal and computer consultation, and resources such as books and pamphlets which support development of the curriculum. TRAVEL: Travel covers mainly instate driving costs for the two professional staff members and some selective travel to national conferences related to the development of the philanthropy curriculum. PHILANTHROPY CONFERENCE: This line item covers the cost of a conference scheduled for October 1997. National experts will be asked to present thoughtful essays on the key intellectual issues related to the framing of this curriculum. They will be meeting with the development site teachers who will be applying the ideas presented. The essays and the discussion will be published for use by the site development schools and others interested in the teaching of this material. �CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT: These are the costs associated directly with the development of the curriculum and the related teaching units. The line item includes support for teacher time, continuing inservice training, computer communication and research, an incentive to local advisory committees to support service learning projects, mini-grants to the schools for library books and assistance with service-learning coordination, development of related bibliographies, and access to a national panel of advisors. EVALUATION: There are several components to the evaluation strategy. These are: Formative Evaluation during each of the five years of the project Conference Evaluation of the results of the national philanthropy conference and the essays which result Summative Evaluations at the end of the third year, and the end of the fifth year State and National Conference Evaluation of the dissemination efforts Evaluations of the validity and efficiency of the student learning outcome assessment process/tool A longitudinal study of the results of exposure to this curriculum on the adult philanthropic behavior of the students involved. DISSEMINATION: This line item supports the various formal dissemination strategies including: An ongoing newsletter to organizations and individuals in related stakeholder communities Curriculum materials to each of the Intermediate School Districts in Michigan Inservice training materials at each of the Intermediate School Districts in Michigan A special dissemination conference in the State of Michigan for key stakeholders A special dissemination conference with an invited national audience of key stakeholders. There are 5 documents: A. The original five year expenditure budget compared to the current three year income (Deficit starting in year one: total gap $3,847,288) B. The original first three year expenditure budget compared to the current three year income (Deficit starting in year one: total gap $2,237,166) C. What it would take in program and staffing changes to balance the project to the grant income (Deficit starting in mid-year two: requires major program and staffing adjustments)* D. How far we could go, assuming the current cuts in plans, before running out of money (Deficit starting in mid-year two, funds depleted about summer 1999)* E. A revision of what a solid new five year budget would look like based on what we would now like to do (Total budget: $4.2 million, $1 million less than the original five year budget). These two scenarios assume that none of the cuts already made in the project are reinstated and that the project will be completed at the absolute minimum of quality. Fund-raising Assistant: entry-level professional position for assistance in grantwriting, reporting, prospecting, and the Philanthropy Education Network membership. Secretary: entry-level secretarial position to support Rita, Barbara, Evelyn, and Dennis. (We could probably use a second secretary if money was available) Data Manager: entry-level support position with responsibility for tracking multiple databases- newsletter mailing lists, teachers, field-test teachers, state coalitions etc. Also, responsible for fact checking on the lessons. Publications Editor: entry-level support position to review and complete the final editing of materials for publication and web placement (lessons, teacher support materials, other publications). Part-time Editor: part-time position for a retired, experienced teacher, to edit the lessons and teacher support material for content. The position allows for speeding up the review process of a substantial amount of lessons and would be recruited to complement Evelyn’s expertise. (Evelyn-geography, economics: New staff-history, government). Lesson Assistant: entry-level position for an educator to assist Barbara in coaching the teachers in writing lessons. This could be a teacher-in-residence where a teacher would come to work with us for a year and then go back to the classroom (that would increase the costs since the benefit package is 30% more) Pilot Rep: part-time position for a retired, experience teacher to represent the Project in the State of Michigan in securing pilot schools that will teach the lessons K-12. This is the basis for the development of the standardized assessment, and will also provide us with demonstration sites where the lessons are being taught at every grade level. �Four Regional Consultants: full-time professionals responsible for working with state coalition development and support. New national staff members Four PT lesson writers: part-time position for four retired teachers to write specific lessons required by the Project. One teacher at each grade band (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12). Consultants These are the consultants currently working for the Project, and those proposed. There are considerable holes in the numbers and they will add substantially to the bottom line. Assessment-Dr. Tom Hirsch: Tom is a psychomatrician with responsibility for developing assessments within the lesson plans/units and standardized assessment tests at grades 5, 8, and 11. The tests will meet national testing industry standards for development. There will be two tests printed at each grade level. Service-learning: the Project has a contract with the Michigan Department of Education to provide servicelearning technical assistance to schools in Michigan. This could be dropped. It is now fully funded. Content Research: Luana works from home in researching and writing original materials on K-12 philanthropy education. Newsletter: Gretchen writes the newsletter. Publications: Jim is interested in working as a Project representative placing stories in the national educational-and philanthropic media. He can also assist with publications. National PR: Doug Monroe-assistance in obtaining national public relations support through the general media and in support of the sponsors. Textbooks: Dr. Joe Stoltman is working with us on writing a high school level textbook, CD-Rom, and materials for the website. We would then take this and “write down” for a similar textbook at the other three grade bands. This is partially funded. Endorsements: This is consultation to obtain formal endorsements from national educational organizations Business development: Ed Legal: Mike Sponsorship/funding: Lynn Web-site development: I am unsure of the number of staff, the type of staff, or the costs involved. This area needs the most work. Student lessons: this would be working with Gary Rowe on the process of student’s developing their own lessons and video materials. Professional development online: Sandy Evaluation: our foundation funders require formal outside evaluation. The MSU team is contracted to work with us for three years. This is fully funded. Team of five PhD’s, one grad student, and one assistant. Summer Lesson Writers: this is to pay 32 classroom teachers (8 at each grade level) to write two units during the summer time to add to the lesson pool. �Office Supplies/Telephone/Equipment This is as it sounds. If we continue to work out of the Muskegon Intermediate School District offices we have extremely beneficial rates on telephone, access to technology (like large scale copying/binding machines), and technology support. If we cannot stay at the ISD, our costs will be much higher. If we move from Muskegon (or any small town) to a major city, our costs will be much higher. Equipment is for additional office equipment and computers for new staff. Curriculum National Content Advisors: This is 10 high profile philanthropic scholars as advisors on the content meeting one time per year. The cost is a $1,000 honorarium and travel/meeting expenses. Fairness: this is a committee that meets several times a year to review materials and lessons to assure cultural fairness. Field-testing: this is sending original lessons out for field-testing (each lesson is taught by 5-7 other classroom teachers and independently evaluated.) We pay the field-test teacher $50-100 for the testing, depending on the size and complexity of the lesson/unit. Also, there are considerable copying and mailing costs. Lesson publication: this is simple copying and comb binding of the lessons. We sell them for cost + shipping. Briefing papers: these are original 2-3 page papers on the philanthropy content ideas. Teachers can use these as “cliff notes” on a complex topic. They are about concepts (civil society), people (Jane Adams), or organizations (Red Cross). We pay graduate students $50 per paper. Publication is simple copying and comb binding. Assessment questions: this is to pay for the final writing of the assessment questions for the last to philanthropy strands-the first two strands are completed. Pilot schools: this pays for substitute teachers during inservice training, and small expenses for schools that volunteer to be pilot schools. Piloting of the tests: once the assessment tests are assembled, they need to be piloted in selected schools. This pays a small stipend for their involvement as well as lay-out and publication, etc. Field-testing tests: once the tests have been piloted they then need to be field-tested in schools across the country. This includes lay-out, printing, mailing back and forth. Publishing tests: once completed the tests will be published in booklets (two tests per grade level 5, 8, 11) as a way of providing standardized assessment of student learning. Range finding: this is a meeting in order to determine what constitutes passing at (a,b,c,d) on the tests Summer writing meetings: this covers the cost of the summer teachers writing new lessons for the project. It covers food, travel, meeting space for 8 weeks etc. Library resources: technical resources to support the lesson writers and staff. Professional Development National teacher conference: this is a once a year conference for teachers from across the country who are committed to teaching the lessons and belong to the Philanthropy Education Network. �Classroom support materials: this is publication of support materials: bookmarks on philanthropists, posters, manipulatives. Textbooks: this is the cost for development of the textbooks (without publication costs): writers, research, CD-Rom, preparation for the web-site. Briefing papers: this is for publishing the briefing papers. Website Questions here regarding-one website or three, what the costs will be etc. MSU-we currently have a contract with MSU to put the lessons on the web through December 2000 Novagate-we currently have the web-site on this internet platform Publicity Newsletter: we currently do 2 newsletters per year at approximately $15,000 per newsletter without postage. We would like to go to 3 newsletters and expand the reach. Conference presentations: this is mainly for travel expenses to national educational conference for presentations about the project ClubPhil buses: this is to purchase and outfit/staff two traveling busses to cross the country promoting philanthropy education. Collateral materials: mugs, t-shirts, tote bags, magnets and other promotional items. State Coalitions These are funds to support the development of state based coalitions. There will be ten-fifteen states added each year. Travel-this is for the regional rep’s to travel to meetings to establish the coalitions/includes cost of the first meetings Summer orientations-this is for the Project to pay 100% for the first summer orientation for teachers (10 states) and to pay for 50% as a challenge for the second summer orientation, and then the cost will be picked up by local coalitions. Teacher meetings- this supports meetings of the teachers in a state, two times per year in the first year, and then to be picked up by state coalitions Two year state coordinator-this covers the cost of paying for the state coordinator salary for two years ($30,000 per year per state). This allows the state coalition to hire someone (probably buy-out a university faculty member’s time, or a retired teacher as a consultant) while raising the money for long-term support. Year 1: ten states @ 30,000 $300,000 Year 2: ten new states + second year on Year 1 states etc. Coalition Directions This pays for the writing and preparation for the website of directions for the coalition partners on how to start and build a coalition for philanthropy education at the state level.
