While the general and day-to-day support for the components of CMA is partially assured through our endowment, much larger needs remain that require focused leadership and dedicated suppmt. Significant challenges include: • Communicating the Cause. CMA remains an evolving and growing organization that is only now just beginning find its potential. While CMA's innovative constmction provides both an innovative and enduring tool, it also presents a vety difficult challenge to explain and promote. How can the need and value for service and volunteering be articulated in compelling terms? How can the impact of local ~[forts be shared to communicate the needfor all to serve? What means are most effective in articulating the needfor human and financial support ofservice and vohmteerism? • Supporting Local Innovation Communities across Michigan are fettile ground for incubating innovative programs and initiatives that can demonstrate how service and voluntcerism may serve as enduring methods of community problem solving. How can local commtmities expand innovative models? The ConnectMichigan Alliance Campaign brought together the public and private sectors tlu·ongh a challenge grant from the State of Michigan that was matched by the private sector dollar for dollar. Thanks to the tremendous efforts of the Board of Trustees and an exemplary fundraising cabinet, the ConnectMichigan Alliance is blessed with an endowment of nearly $20 million in assets. The organization's endowment, while still forming due to outstanding pledges and a creeping economic market climate, will someday grow to provide greater levels of support and help to undetwrite the basic operations of the Alliance in perpetuity. Today, the ConnectMichigan Alliance must stand ready to meet the unique and enduring challenges to our volunteer infrastructure and exploit the opportunities those very challenges present. To do so, the organization and its leadership need to begin to create the climate bold action and support inherent to all successful nonprofit organizations. The ConnectMichigan Alliance Leadership Fund will be a first step toward ensuring that the ConnectMichigan Alliance can: • address the ever-evolving changes in the nonprofit sector; • exploit new opportunities that create relevant and needed new local programs and initiatives; • communicate and highlight the great work that local connnunity-based initiatives; • research trends that might impact the service and volunteer infrastructure; and • develop leadership at the local level that can support and enhance the growth of Michigan's ethic of service to others. The ConnectMichigan Alliance benefits from this relationship because of the flexibility the Community Foundations can offer to the various nonprofits they support. These include providing options ranging from permanent endowment funds, agency funds that can utilize their corpus, and temporary funds that focus on specific events or causes with a determined end life. All of these options are available and augment the advantages to the ConnectMichigan Alliance's relationship with a Conununity Foundation. CMA is comprised of a number of partner organizations and programs that work in unison to ensure that a solid infrastructure exists to support local volunteer efforts. These organizations include: Michigan Community Se1vice Commission (MCSC), Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA), Michigan Campus Compact (MCC), Volunteer Centers of Michigan (VCM), Michigan's Promise and national service programs to support Mentor Michigan. These organizations and programs are vital to the landscape of support provided to nonprofits and charitable causes in our state. The MCSC and MNA are the founding partners of this public/private partnership and bring together the government and the nonprofit sector to advance the cause of volunteerism in our state. The MCC and VCM are the founding affiliates of CMA and represent higher education and community-based volunteering respectively. CMA provides the day-to-day operational, administrative and programmatic support to these organizations as they champion service and civic engagement opportunities across Michigan. Michigan can be proud of the work if these and many other organizations that work hard every day to harness the power of individuals to strengthen Michigan communities. With nearly half of all Michigan residents volunteering (according to Michigan Volunteering and Giving), it becomes ever more important to ensure that systems exist to charmel people's passions and intent toward opportunities to address genuine needs. This need to maximize human resources was why the founders of CMA embarked upon a $20 million 5 �DRAFT FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY endowment campaign to permanently support the Michigan service and volunteer infrastructure. That campaign was completed in December of2003. Today, the affiliate partners and programs of CMA are assured that their general operational and limited programmatic support is assured through the CMA Endowment Fund. Thanks to the tremendous efforts of the Board of Trustees and an exemplaty fundraising cabinet, the ConnectMichigan Alliance is blessed with an endowment of nearly $20 million in assets. The organization's endowment, while still fanning due to outstanding pledges and a creeping economic market climate, will someday grow to provide greater levels of support and help to underwrite the basic operations of the Alliance in perpetuity. Today, the ConnectMichigan Alliance must stand ready to meet the unique and enduring challenges to our volunteer infi'astmctnre and exploit the opportunities those very challenges present. To do so, the organization and its leadership need to begin to create the climate for bold action and suppmt inherent to all successful nonprofit organizations. The ConnectMichigan Alliance Leadership Fund will be a first step toward ensuring that the ConnectMichigan Alliance can: • address the ever-evolving changes in the nonprofit sector; • exploit new opportunities that create relevant and needed new local programs and initiatives; • communicate and highlight the great work oflocal community-based initiatives; • research trends that might impact the service and volunteer infrastmcture; and • develop leadership at the local level that can support and enhance the growth of Michigan's ethic of service to others. How can the need and value for service and volunteering be articulated in compelling terms? How can the impact of local efforts be shared to communicate the need for all to serve? CMA must develop and strengthen leadership to ensure that the needed skills exist to lead this movement. How can we ensure that the resources are available to train and skill generations of leaders in the nonprofit sector? Where will the next generation of leadership learn the ethic ofservice and its role in our society? Partnering with research institutions in an attempt to utilize existing polling, tracking and survey processes to measure how service and volunteerism are potentially impacting community issues (i.e. education, health care, housing, economic development, civic engagement, children's issues) CMA Overview The ConnectMichigan Alliance is a cutting-edge nonprofit organization focused on building a lifelong ethic of service, volunteerism and civic engagement through organizations where we live, work and learn in Michigan. CMA is comprised of a number of partner organizations and programs that work in unison to ensure that a solid infrastmcture exists to support local volunteer efforts. These organizations include: Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC), Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA), Michigan Campus Compact (MCC), Volunteer Centers of Michigan (VCM), Michigan's Promise and national service programs to support Mentor Michigan. These organizations and programs are vital to the landscape of support provided to nonprofits and charitable causes in our state. The MCSC and MNA are the founding partners of this public/private partnership and bring together the government and the nonprofit sector to advance the cause ofvolunteerism in our state. The MCC and VCM are the founding affiliates of CMA and represent higher education and community-based volunteering respectively. CMA provides the day-to-day operational, administrative and programmatic support to these organizations as they champion service and civic engagement opportunities across Michigan. Michigan can be proud of the work of these and many other organizations that work hard every day to harness the power of individuals to strengthen Michigan communities. With nearly half of all Michigan residents volunteering (according to Michigan Volunteering and Giving), it becomes ever more important to ensure that systems exist to channel people's passions and intent toward oppotiunities to address genuine needs. This need to maximize human resources was why the founders of CMA embarked upon a $20 million 5 �DRAFT CONFIDENTIAL~ FOR INTERNAL PURPOSES ONLY-DO NOT DISTRIBUTE CounectMichigan Alliance Leadership Priorities The ConnectMichigan Alliance (CMA) is cutting-edge statewide nonprofit organization designed to support service and volunteerism in Michigan in perpetuity. Because of its unique structure (an alliance of several organization supported by an endowment) and its leadership position nationally, it is often difficult to compare systems and philosophies with like organizations. In other words, without competition or similar organizations to compare CMA to, determining the operational procedures and expectations (including salaries) becomes difficult. However, the infonnation below attempts to provide some guidance to the CMA Board of Trustees to determine the overall priorities regarding the organization's positions on leadership, growth, and compensation. Leadership Goals When it was created in 2000, the ConnectMichigan Alliance was the only nonprofit of its kind. This remains tlue-no other statewide nonprofit alliance supporting service and volunteerism with an eight-figure endowment currently exists in Michigan or nationally. This places CMA in an unprecedented top tier leadership position and one that should be maintained. To do so, it becomes vitally important to ensure that the trustees attract and retain the highest level senior staff. The priority of the CMA Trustees will be to: • • • • develop a compensation plan that is competitive and fiscally prudent; gamer senior and executive staff with significant state and national experience; competitively seek talent respected and sought at either/both the state and national levels; and ensure CMA attracts and retains entrepreneurial spirited individuals and utilizes that spirit to the advantage of the organization. Growth Goals CMA currently includes four founding organizations and several programs all supported through the proceeds of a $19.4 million endowment. While this is an amazing accomplishment, it should not be looked upon as the end of the organization's potentialmuch to the contrary-it should be looked upon as the beginning. However, future growth will be determined by the organizational leadership and the ability to attract more partners and resources. CMA must align its goals and priorities for growth around its incentives for its leadership to achieve them. The Executive Committee will establish the compensation for the CEO based on annual performance assessments. a. The Executive Committee will mmually review the current compensation utilizing the organization's compensation philosophy (see above) and determine if changes are necessary due to perfonnance, market trends (competitive compensation rates), or budgetary changes. b. After consultation with the CEO, the Executive Committee will make a compensation recommendation to the Trustees as part of their annual review. 4. The Alliance will initially consist of the Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC), Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA), Volunteer Centers of Michigan (VCM), Michigan Campus Compact (MCC) and the ConnectMichigan Campaign Partners. VCM and MCC will be permanently housed with in the Alliance along with a number of programs and fundings sources' cutTently housed in the MCSC and MNA. MCSC, VCM, MCC and MNA are permanent member of the Alliance. The graphic in Appendix 1 illustrates the changes (see Appendix 1). Essentially, the MCSC and MNA will modify their cutTen! respective functions to ensure that they are not competing and are executing support functions for the field that are effective and efficient. The Alliance will be established as a separate 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership organization comprised a board of directors consisting of not more than six members nominated and approved by the Alliance partner organizations. An executive director will be appointed by the board of directors and will serve at the will of the board. The executive director will be charged to handle all day to day operations of the Alliance under the supervision of the board of directors. Need There is a need to avoid competition. There is a need to build effeciencies. BENEFITS Opportunity to participate in the creation of an innovative state level organization to promote and increase partnerships in service and civic responsibility in Michigan. Steps must be taken however, to create a new organizational structure based on the successes and challenges of the MNA umbrella organization. If successful, the new structure should support and provide a model of collaboration, consensus-based decision-making, and non-hierarchical structure for local community partnerships across .the state of Michigan. As the Chairman of the ConnectMichigan Alliance, the host organization for Michigan’s Promise, I am delighted to share in this great start to the Women’s Initiative. ConnectMichigan Alliance/Michigan’s Promise I represent the ConnectMichigan Alliance here today, but I am also proud that I have been involved with the “Promise” effort in Michigan since its inception. Attended the Summit in Philly Launched Saginaw’s Promise Served on the Michigan Community Service Commission that launched Michigan’s Promise Connection to Women’s Initiative Now, we all have the opportunity to once again put Michigan in the lead of volunteerism and philanthropy with the Women’s Initiative. This program will focus on bringing women of color with young girls in mentoring relationships to focus on increasing philanthropy in our state. America’s Promise I am also delighted to accept on behalf of the ConnectMichigan Alliance, a $50,000 grant from America’s Promise that will be used to support the Women’s Initiatives and all the 29 Communities of Promise in their work to bring the five promises to children. The public/private initiative called, “Women and Girls in Service to Children and Youth in Michigan” is a new program that will recruit women and young girls in six Michigan cities, including Lansing. “We are honored to be chosen to engage our women leaders in mentoring girls and improving the lives in our community,” said XXXXX of the Capital Area United Way. Comerica Bank provided a $7,000 matching contribution to the Lansing initiative. “Women and Girls in Service to Children and Youth in Michigan” is a $400,000 grant program funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service that is designed to engage more women in service and philanthropy through local United Way agencies in Battle Creek, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Midland and Lansing. The program will focus on women of color working with children to get them the five resources, or Promises, identified by America’s Promise as essential their successful growth: caring individual, safe place, healthy start, marketable skill, and an opportunity to serve. “America’s Promise is excited about bringing the resources of the United Way and the passion of women philanthropists together in Michigan to focus on the needs of children,” said Richard Wells, Vice President for Community and Public Policy with America’s Promise—The Alliance for Youth. America’s Promise—The Alliance for Youth was founded by Ret. Gen. Colin Powell after the 1997 President’s Summit for America’s Future in Philadelphia. To date, America's Promise has created a diverse and growing Alliance, partnering with more than 400 national organizations and more than 400 local efforts to fulfill one or more of the Five Promises. It will be an annual event to provide national recognition to communities for their youth-focused practices and policies. Reporting Dates: Mid-year report, June 30, 2005 Final report, December 31, 2005 1 �Program Narrative Purpose The ConnectMichigan Alliance (CMA) will support Michigan’s Promise’s support of the Women and Girls in Service to Children and Youth Initiative of the United Way of America and America’s Promise: The Alliance for Youth. CMA and Michigan’s Promise will work with United Way of Michigan and the CMA partners to provide support to the Women’s Initiative Communities and the Communities of Promise that wish to focus on the areas this initiative will highlight. Background CMA is a powerful force for volunteerism. It has forged an innovative partnership with four model organizations (Michigan Community Service Commission, Michigan Nonprofit Association, Michigan Campus Compact and Volunteer Centers of Michigan) to unite their efforts and to sustain and expand Michigan's volunteer infrastructure in a way that separate organizations cannot. Its endowment fund ensures the resources necessary for stability and long- term success of our state’s volunteer infrastructure. CMA's focus includes four critical areas: youth volunteerism, community volunteerism, higher education, and training and technical assistance. Building on Governor George Romney's vision that volunteers can change our world, CMA works to provide opportunities for every individual to give back to their community now and in the future. Michigan’s Promise is a program of the CMA and is working a three-year strategic plan to elevate the profile of the Promise in Michigan, engage community and state leaders, deepen grassroots support, and determine the methods of sustainability that can continue the effective efforts of the Promise. In addition, Michigan is fortunate that Governor Jennifer M. Granholm and First Gentleman, Daniel Mulhern have championed a focus on gaining mentors for youth in our state. This campaign, known as Mentor Michigan, is seeking 10,000 new mentors by 2006. The ConnectMichigan Alliance is working to join the Mentor Michigan campaign with Michigan’s Promise and its first promise. Program Elements Michigan’s Promise will utilize the America’s Promise funds to support the Women’s Initiative communities and the Michigan Communities of Promise sites in their efforts to encourage mentoring, philanthropy and volunteerism, and other areas of the Promise. Activities will include: 1. Convening Communities: Women’s Initiative Communities and Michigan Communities of Promise will be convened annually to share best practices; learn strategies on philanthropy, volunteerism and mentoring; and evaluate progress toward meeting community goals. Michigan’s Promise will also bring together the communities and partners (state and national) via conference calls on a bi-monthly basis to “check in” and ensure that community needs are being addressed. 2 �2. Training and Technical Assistance: Women’s Initiative Communities and Michigan Communities of Promise will have access to local, regional, or statewide training opportunities in areas based on individual community need. Training topics may include working with youth, mentoring, fundraising, board development and forging community partnerships. 3. Scholarships: Twelve scholarships will be made available to individuals and organizations from Women’s Initiative and Michigan’s Promise communities to attend conferences, meetings and learning opportunities related to the program. The six Women’s Initiative Communities will each be guaranteed a scholarship and the remaining six will be available to Communities of Promise on a competitive basis based on a work plan and application. 4. Communication/Marketing Strategies: The work of this project will be published on the CMA/Michigan’s Promise website to include activities, partnerships, and a library of tools specific to these communities to advance their work (costs may be lower if Promise Station can be utilized for this purpose without additional costs). In addition, quarterly e-newsletters will be published statewide and beyond as a way of celebrating and sharing the work of the initiative. Finally, and comprehensive final report will be developed to publish the lessons learned, challenges and future directions of the initiative. 5. Research: The work of the communities involved in this initiative will be supported through statewide research tools. In addition, communities will have data on mentoring in Michigan available to them through the Mentor Michigan Census. (see: http://www.michigan.gov/documents/MM_Census_10-04_109098_7.pdf). 6. Recognition: Local successes with this initiative should be celebrated to demonstrate to the public the cause and how philanthropy, volunteerism and mentoring can work to improve communities. Public recognition can also raise the profile of the work and encourage others to participate. This program will make eight recognition grant awards available to Women’s Initiative and Promise communities on a competitive basis. Applicants will be reviewed by a review panel made up of CMA partners, Michigan’s Promise Leadership Council members and designees from the Women’s Initiative partners. Local press conferences will be held to announce the awards. Sustainability Often program designs and proposals describe the sustainability of an initiative as a final point or as a future dream based on the availability of outside funding sources. Michigan’s Promise is different. Michigan’s Promise is part of the ConnectMichigan Alliance which uses its broad partnerships, cohesive organizational structure and its long horizon financial base ($20 million endowment) to incubate, launch and foster various programs like the Promise in Michigan. The Women’s Initiative funding will help grow 3 �the reach of the Promise and support efforts to increase philanthropy in Michigan, but the ConnectMichigan Alliance and its partner organizations will hopefully be able to integrate and support the outcomes of this funding for the long term. In addition, Michigan’s Promise will utilize the Women’s Initiative Funding to incorporate new communities into the Michigan’s Promise network of Communities of Promise (Currently, only Metro Detroit, Lansing and Grand Rapids serve both as elements of the Women’s Initiative and as Communities of Promise. See list attached). The ConnectMichigan Alliance is delighted to join in a partnership with America’s Promise, the Corporation for National and Community Service and United Way to launch and support the Women’s Initiative. The remaining amount, $14,625.00, will be charged to the grant. Travel – $2,450 - Travel costs for the Michigan’s Promise Coordinator to conduct site visits and attend one out-of-state meeting. Costs include car mileage, lodging, air fare (if necessary) and meals. $1,837.50 will be charged to the grant and $612.50 will serve as an in kind contribution. Convening – $4,000 - Costs to include a one-day meeting in Grand Rapids, Lansing or Metro Detroit to include all Michigan’s Promise and Women’s Initiative Community designees. Specifics will include room rental, AV, accommodations and speaker fees if necessary. Training – $8,000 – Costs to include two regional trainings at $2,500 each and funds to partially support local trainings at the six Women’s Initiative Communities at $500 each. Scholarships – $7,200 – Twelve $600 scholarships to be awarded to communities. Six to the Women’s Initiative Communities (6x$600= $3,600) plus six to Communities of Promise (6x$600=$3,600).
