Charles Stewart Mott Foundation C. S. Mott Foundation awarded CMA a $1,000,000 lead gift in December, 2000. Hudson-Webber Foundation CMA submitted a $100,000 proposal in May. The Foundation considered the proposal at its June Board meeting. We expect to learn the outcome of their decision within the next week. Michigan Community Foundations CMA staff issued proposals in May requesting a total $500,000 from community foundations throughout Michigan. CMA Leadership Committee members are in the process of making follow-up calls/visits. To date, Capital Region Community Foundation awarded CMA $25,000, The Jackson Community Foundation awarded CMA $10,000, and Sturgis Area Community Foundation awarded CMA $500. CMA staff will issue an additional $300,000 in requests in July. The Harry A. and Margaret D. Towsley Foundation CMA submitted a $250,000 proposal in June. The Foundation will consider the request at its August Board meeting. The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation CMA submitted a $1 million proposal in June. The Foundation will consider the request at its September Board meeting. The Kresge Foundation CMA Leadership Committee members met with John Marshall in May. CMA campaign staff are busy developing a $1,000,000 proposal and supporting materials to be submitted in August and anticipate the Foundation will make its decision in December. VV.K. Kellogg Foundation W.K. Kellogg Foundation awarded CMA a $1,000,000 lead gift in December, 2000. West Michigan Strategy: The Governor and First Lady of Michigan, along with Diana Sieger and Peter Secchia hosted a reception in Grand Rapids on June 5th. CMA Leadership Committee members and staff are finalizing follow-up strategies. �III. Corporate Division Chair - Michelle Engler Activity to Date Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan CM A campaign staff met with BCBSM representatives in May. Leadership Committee members and staff will meet with BCBCM representatives again in the fall and request support in the amount of $250,000. CMA anticipates a decision by the end of 2001. Comerica Leadership Committee members met with Comerica representatives in April and requested support for CMA in the amount of $500,000. CMA anticipates a decision by the end of summer. DaimlerChrysler Leadership Committee members and CMA campaign staff met with DaimlerChrysler representatives in April and requested support in the amount of $1,000,000. CMA anticipates a decision by the end of summer. Detroit Edison Leadership Committee members and CMA campaign staff met with Detroit Edison representatives in April and requested support in the amount of $1,000,000. CMA anticipates a decision in late July. Ford Leadership Committee members held initial discussions with Ford representatives in June. Committee members and CMA staff will meet with Ford representatives in September and request support in the amount of $1,000,000. CMA anticipates a decision by the end of 2001. General Motors Leadership Committee members and CMA campaign staff met with General Motors representatives in April and requested support in the amount of $1,000,000. CMA anticipates a decision by the end of summer. Family Division - $ in Gifts/Pledges to Date Michigan Campus Compact: To date, gifts and pledges designated for the CMA campaign by MCC member presidents and institutions and MCC staff total $34,210. MCC expects to wrap up its campaign on July 31. Michigan Nonprofit Association To date, gifts and pledges designated for the CMA campaign by MNA Board and staff members total $54,075. MNA expects to wrap up its campaign on July 31. Michigan Community Service Commission To date, gifts and pledges designated for the CMA campaign by MCSC Commissioners and staff total $46,505. MCSC expects to wrap up its campaign on July 31. Volunteer Centers of Michigan To date, gifts and pledges designated for the CMA campaign by VCM Board members, staff and member institutions total $2,000. VCM expects to wrap up its campaign on July 31. Organizations Two organizations participating in the Family Division of the CMA campaign recently pledged major gifts to the campaign. Davenport University and the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Michigan (AICUM) both announced gifts of $10,000. The Herbert and Grace Dow Foundation awarded a $1 million grant to the ConnectMichigan Alliance Campaign. The gift .will add momentum to our efforts in Southeastern Michigan. We are almost halfway to meeting! pur goal of establishing a $10 million endowment fund for the ConnectMichigan Alliance. I want to update you oh the status of our efforts in Southeastern Michigan. I believe the potential for success of several of our initiatives in this region will be significantly enhanced by your continued support. ..-.:. : - ; -:;: . We feel very confident that the Foundation will look favorably on a $1 million request from the ConnectMichigan Alliance. John Marshall indicated a strong interest in having a CMA office in Detroit. I am meeting with Virgil Carr on October 10 to discuss this opportunity. The Foundation's decision will be made during its December or March Board meeting. I have enclosed a Board roster for this Foundation. If you have a relationship with any of the Board members, an informal call from you indicating your personal support for this initiative would be timely. in The Community Foundation for Southeastern Michigan: We submitted a grant request in the amount of $150,000 to the Whitney Fund and were awarded a $50,000 grant. We recently submitted a second request to CFSEM for a grant in the amount of $150,000. You may remember that after our meeting with Mariam, we had hoped to generate grants totaling $250,000 from CFSEM. Our pending request and the $50,000 grant already awarded ConnectMichigan Alliance P.O. We think that Peter Thurber influenced the McGregor Fund's decision to consider a request in the amount of $200,000 instead of $150,000 which makes up for the final $50,000 we hoped to secure. We anticipate the CFSEM will consider our $150,000 request during the Foundation's December Board meeting. I have enclosed a Board roster for this Foundation. An informal call indicating your support for the request to any of the Board members with whom you have a personal relationship may be very helpful. McGregor Fund: Sam and I will meet with David Campbell on October 15 to make a formal presentation on behalf of the ConnectMichigan Alliance. This is in support of the $200,000 grant proposal we submitted in August. We remain confident the Foundation will look favorably upon our request. A personal call from you to any of the Foundation's Board members with whom you have a personal relationship will enhance our efforts. I have enclosed a Board roster for the McGregor Fund. The Southfield Community Foundation: We submitted a proposal in the amount of $900 to the Southfield Community Foundation last May. Most community foundations delayed their decisions on CMA requests until their fall 2001 board meetings. I have enclosed a list of The Southfield Community Foundation's Board members. A personal call from you to any of the members with whom you have a relationship will enhance our efforts with this foundation. The Skillman Foundation: Sam, Kyle, Tim and I met to discuss strategies for approaching The Skillman Foundation. In keeping with the Foundation's focus on youth, our strategy is to team up with CMF's Learning to Give program. Given that you are a member of the Learning to Give Steering Committee, I am sure you will be pleased to know that up to five percent of the annual earnings from the CMA endowment that are a direct result of Skillman Foundation support will be granted to Learning to Give. For example, should The Skillman Foundation approve a grant totaling $500,000, up to five percent of $500,000 (depending on how well the endowment does in any given year) will be available for Learning to Give. Our request will be for a grant in the amount of $500,000 and our proposal is currently being developed. It will be submitted by the end of October. I have enclosed a Board roster for The Skillman Foundation. A personal call from you to any of the Board members with whom you have a relationship will enhance our efforts with this Foundation. Corporations DaimlerChrysler Corporation: Terry Pruitt recently called Frank Fountain and was assured that "everything was okay" in terms of our request for $1 million. Frank indicated DCC would make its decision in mid-September but �did not comment on the amount we might expect. We should hear of their decision any day. Ford Motor Company: I think the meeting we had with Sandy Ulsh went very well. We do not have a specific timeframe concerning a decision on our request for $1 million but expect the decision will come before the end of the year. Michelle is placing a follow-up call to Jacques Nasser to ensure the request stays in front of him. General Motors Corporation: Kyle had a conversation with Debbie Dingell and Vivian Pickard about GM's participation in the campaign. Kyle felt that Debbie was skeptical and Vivian suggested that Michelle contact Rod Gillum to reenergize this effort. In my experience, GM typically comes in lower than DaimlerChrysler and Ford in this type of campaign. I do not expect to hear about GM's decision until after we have heard from DaimlerChrysler and Ford. Other United Way Community Services: I mentioned in my update on our efforts with The Kresge Foundation that I will be meeting with Virgil Carr on October 10, to discuss the potential to house a CMA staff person at UWCS. I will keep you updated on the progress of this effort. Julie, your leadership in the ConnectMichigan Alliance Campaign is greatly appreciated. I would like to meet with each of you to discuss our progress to date, and future initiatives necessary for continued success. To date, we have been successful on all but two of the major requests we have submitted to potential funding sources. I regretfully report that the Harry A. and Margaret D. Towsley Foundation and the Richard and Helen DeVos Foundation declined to support the CMA campaign. On a more celebratory note, I am pleased to report that the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation approved a grant in the amount of $1,000,000 for the campaign. This represents an extraordinary level of support from this foundation for this type of campaign. I have attached a ConnectMichigan Alliance Gift Snapshot Report. Beginning November 13, you will receive a weekly update of this report from Kim Lane. The first column of the Snapshot represents major gifts of $25,000 or more that have been pledged/gifted to the campaign. The second column represents requests of $25,000 or more that are currently being considered by the identified funding source (in most cases presentations have been made). The third column represents potential funding sources with whom we are presently meeting to discuss possible support for the campaign. And the fourth column represents potential funding sources with whom we would like to approach early next year. Gilhertson Since we last met on September 11, the ConnectMichigan Alliance (CMA) Campaign has been active and gratifying, particularly concerning the dramatic events that took place on that very day! I am presenting a gift snapshot that is prepared weekly by the CMA Campaign staff leadership. I have made several foundation and corporate presentations with John Lore of CMA, Kyle Caldwell of MCSC and Sam Singh of MNA. I have also made separate calls, as have John, Sam and Kyle. Moreover, I have received the support of Board members from those respective organizations, hi that regard I do want to thank each of you for your personal and professional commitment to the Campaign. Russ, Rob, Terry and Nonie--I want to thank each of you for your continued involvement in our fund raising efforts and the guidance you have given and continue to give John, Kyle and Sam as they make their calls and design their strategy. That is essential for the ultimate success of this Campaign. Geneva, I want to thank you for making calls with me in Detroit and Southeastern Michigan. Your presence on those calls was vital to show the Southeastern community that the Alliance is a source of support, rather than competition. Johnson Overall Snapshot We have very exciting news to report; the Ford Motor Company Fund has pledged $1 million to the ConnectMichigan Alliance Campaign. This gift is extremely important for our corporate strategy, which will begin next year in Tier II. Please note that we have expanded the Snapshot to include all gifts of $10,000 or more. Also, as the Snapshot reflects, we are already at more than 50% of our corpus goal of $10 million. Additionally, we would like to mention that this week we received many cash gifts. We would like to let you know about some of the exciting things that we have planned for Tier II of the Corporate and Foundation Divisions. Overall Snapshot We have started to plan our Tier II Corporate and Foundation Strategy, using some of the gifts that we have already received as a spring board toward our goal of $20 million. Community Foundations: We have received word that the Saginaw Community Foundation will be unable to honor our request. During a recent meeting of Campaign Staff, we organized our Community Foundation strategy for the second tier of the campaign. We will be sending a short update to the community foundations from which we have not received responses to our spring proposals. Additionally, we have updated some of the requests that we made earlier to the Community Foundations. This will help us to complete this aspect of the campaign. We have closed the official "ask phase" of the Volunteer Centers of Michigan and Michigan Campus Compact Divisions. There will be a letter sent shortly to formally announce this to VCM Directors and MCC Presidents. Gifts will always be accepted from "family members", however, as we move into our Corporate Strategy, there will be less attention placed on this phase. Attached you will find a copy of the VCM and MCC reports as they currently stand. Should any major change occur within this division, we will inform you. The Campaign Leadership staff recently met to determine the best approach for our Tier II Corporate Strategy. Michigan Nonprofit Association, Volunteer Centers of Michigan �• Northern Michigan - Kyle and Anne will arrange a brief encounter between Connie Binsfield and Michelle during the State of the State message at which time Connie will be asked to author a letter to the Rotary Charities requesting a $50,000 grant to CMA. After the meeting, a follow up letter from Michelle (to be drafted by Kyle and John) will be sent to Connie with a draft of her letter and proposal to Rotary Charities. • Southeastern Michigan - Kyle will rework the letters from Michelle to DaimlerChrysler and General Motors to reflect a lighter tone and more positive encouragement, informing each that the Ford Motor Company gift level of $1,000,000 was awarded. It was felt that the letters should take on a different tone, particularly since Sandy Ulsh informed Frank and Rod that Ford was considering a $1,000,000 level gift. The purpose now is only to officially acknowledge that the Ford Motor Company Fund gift has been awarded to CMA. It was agreed that the best approach to the potential major individual contributors and larger corporate contributors in the Southeastern Michigan area is through a meeting modeled after the Grand Rapids luncheon. One presentation from the Governor and Michelle would satisfy the necessity of multiple meetings. The invitations would be sent from Peter and Julie Cummings. Michelle will talk to the Governor and Julie will talk to Peter. Concerning the approach to Max Fisher, Michelle will talk to the Governor to determine the most appropriate action in pursuing the request. John agreed to talk to Peter Secchia to consider authoring the Tier II Corporate letters for those companies not located in Southeastern Michigan and not a part of the Southeastern Michigan luncheon. • John and Kyle agreed to work closely with Anne to coordinate scheduling for Michelle, particularly as we approach the completion of the campaign. We have added an approximation of the total possible funding that will be provided by our future requests that are over $25,000. We are moving forward with the corporate aspect of this campaign, and will be determining, with your help, as well as the help of other cabinet members, individual amounts, based on the corporation. The W.K. Kellogg Foundation has approved an additional grant to us in the amount of $250,000 to strengthen the infrastructure of volunteerism in Michigan by supporting the fund development capacity of a statewide organization to promote and increase the capacity for volunteerism. This grant is above and beyond the $1 million foundation grant that was awarded by W.K. Kellogg Foundation. We have received information from the Strosacker Foundation that the proposal that we have submitted to them will be placed on the agenda for consideration at the Foundation's May board meeting. The Frederick S. Upton Foundation has asked that we rewrite the proposal which was submitted to them late last month, so that it fulfills their grant application format. This information has been recompiled and will be submitted to them by their deadline of the 24th of April. Once the new application is received, our request will be placed on the agenda of their May board meeting for consideration. Correspondence received by the Rotary Charities of Traverse City informed us that our proposal was received and the Board will consider at their next meeting in April whether we will be assigned a review committee. Kellogg Foundation and the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation of $500,000.00 for the next two fiscal years, to insure that the fundraising and programming capacity of the Alliance and those served by CMA is secured for the future. The specific amount requested from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation is $125,000.00 in the year 2002 and $125,000.00 in the year 2003. An equal amount is being requested from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation. As a result of the declining economy and the terrorist action of September 11, 2001, the operational income expected from monies raised for CMA has fallen short of original projections. From the thirty major contributors who have supported CMA to date, in the amount of $5,507,660.00, only two have paid the pledge in total. The rest of the contributors have made pledges for multiple years, with the average being five years. Moreover, notwithstanding the fact that the State of Michigan has been extremely generous in matching pledges as well as cash, the economy has been such that the interest earned on the approximately $7.5 million, in the permanent endowment, has been much less than budgeted for the operations and for the staffing of the program coordinator (who was to be hired in September of 2001), which has been pushed back to July of 2002. Because of this shortfall we will be required to seek permission to take funds from our permanent endowment corpus by April of this year, if we do not receive support from the W.K. All of the partners of this initiative have developed innovative approaches to working effectively on a statewide level with varied constituencies in ways that serve as national models. Once the campaign is complete, CMA will have the capacity to fully advance upon achieving its goal of providing avenues for every Michigan citizen to serve their community through volunteer service and civic action. This goal will be met in local communities throughout Michigan by: • • • • • • Providing increased access to training and technical assistance necessary to build the capacity of local nonprofits to meet their communities' most pressing social, charitable, economic, cultural, educational, faith-based, and civic needs; Providing access to a strong and healthy Volunteer Center for every resident; Increasing grant opportunities for Volunteer Centers to engage more citizens in volunteerism and service; Increasing grant opportunities for service-learning programs to engage more young people in service; Maximizing state and federal government resources to empower local communities to address their local challenges; and Increasing the understanding and use of service-learning in the work of community-based nonprofits, K-12 schools and higher education institutions. More than seventy local nonprofit leaders from communities throughout Michigan participated in a two-year planning process. In their deliberations, planners considered the following facts: Overall Significance of Michigan's Volunteers • Almost 90 percent of all charitable organizations, participating in Public Sector Consultants' (PSC) 1997 survey, rely on volunteers. Charitable organizations indicated they averaged 180 volunteers and nearly 9,500 volunteer hours, which translates to 4.6 full-time workers per organization. PSC estimates that more than 1 million volunteers contribute nearly 60 million hours to Michigan nonprofit organizations, an equivalent of more than 28,000 full-time employees and nearly $760 million in donated labor. • According to Michigan Giving & Volunteering, a 1999 statewide report published jointly by the Council of Michigan Foundations and the Michigan Nonprofit Association, 46.7 percent of Michigan adults volunteered during the past twelve months - the majority indicating they are volunteering more hours annually than in the past. • Michigan Giving & Volunteering also revealed that 81.3 percent of those who did not volunteer in 1999 indicated they had not been asked to do so over half said they had been volunteers in the past. Changing Dynamics and Capacity Challenges in Supporting Volunteerism and Service-Learning • As a requirement for graduation, many school districts and institutions of higher education are mandating students complete a set number of hours of volunteer service annually. While the intent is to civically engage young people in a meaningful experience, the need for formal training available to nonprofit organizations, to the schools and to youth far exceeds its availability. • The percentage of students engaged in service-learning through institutions of higher education has annually increased at a double-digit pace over the past several years. Over 17 million hours of service were contributed by undergraduates nation wide. As this trend continues, institutions of higher education will require expanded support services such as those provided by CMA to ensure the quality of service-learning programs. • Michigan corporations are experiencing a growing need to engage in local initiatives to improve the quality of life in the communities in which they are located. Both corporations and nonprofit organizations are experiencing challenges in terms of their organizational capacities to effectively manage, maintain and support this community resource. • Family volunteerism is a growing trend as many families are looking for opportunities to spend quality time together in service to their communities. With the demand for quality family volunteer experiences increasing, local nonprofit organizations need specialized training and technical assistance to effectively serve this constituency. The ConnectMichigan Alliance endowment was created to provide resources for innovative grantmaking, program development, and operational costs. On an annual basis, the endowment allows the organization to sustain current initiatives and focus on the development of new programs. Though the endowment earnings will be significant, it is anticipated that the CMA will continue to fundraise on a limited basis. New dollars that CMA will seek on a limited basis will support new program development versus operational costs. CMA will rely on the endowment earnings, program fees, corporate sponsorships and fees for service for revenue generation. The USA Freedom Corps should reflect this reality. • States and local communities have developed strong public/private partnerships through service and volunteerism that can be utilized. The USA Freedom Corps should target these partnerships as potential models and structures • Communities are best able to define their needs, strategies and solutions. The USA Freedom Corps should provide adequate resources for communities to plan, collaborate and create innovative programs and partnerships that target national imperatives with local long-term solutions. • Homeland security and community service require a strong local "infrastructure" to implement and support local efforts (i.e. Vounteer Centers, K-12 and Higher Education, National Service, etc.). The USA Freedom Corps must invest in this "infrastructure" as a means of delivering quality programming in a cost effective manner. Recommendations: 1. Allow states and local communities to help define what constitutes "homeland security" and the role(s) volunteer centers, higher education institutions, national service and other volunteer programs can play in ensuring the safety of our communities. 2. Provide the lion's share of the resources for implementation of the Citizen Corps and USA Freedom Corps programs generally (except Peace Corps) to states and local communities based on their needs and plans. 3. Make the resources flexible so that governors, mayors, community leaders and local citizens can innovate. Red tape and overly cumbersome national requirements can stifle creativity. 4. Use states and local communities as incubators for solutions much as the government has done for welfare reform, education, workforce development and other human services programs. 5. The "Gifts and Pledges" column is increasing dramatically thanks to the commitment of our Campaign Tri-Chairs and our CMA Campaign Cabinet. We received great news from the Kresge Foundation. The Kresge Foundation approved our request for $1,000,000. The grant is in the form of a campaign completion match. Simply stated it will be officially awarded after we raise $9,000,000. There is now even more rationale to complete the campaign, because of this campaign completion match and the direct dollar for dollar match from the State. We received a gift of $250,000 from General Motors Corporation. Thanks to the incredible commitment of Terry Pruitt we received a generous gift of $100,000 from Dow Corning. This is a significant gift, considering the size of the foundation and recent staff and expense reductions at Dow Corning. A special note of appreciation to Terry! Thanks to the diligent guidance and continued encouragement of Carolyn Bloodworth, we received a generous gift of $50,000 from Consumer's Energy Foundation. Because of the size of the Consumer's Energy Foundation and the state of the economy in the utilities industry, we were pleasantly surprised to receive this level of funding. And finally, a true and heartfelt note of appreciation to F. Martin and Dottie Johnson for their generous personal gift of $10,000. This is in addition to all of the impressive work of Dottie for the CMA Campaign, and is indeed above and beyond the call of duty. We have reformatted our Gift Snapshot to reflect regional requests rather than individual requests. We feel this will present a clearer picture of our progress. As you will see from the snapshot, we have matched 75% of the State challenge match. Only 25% yet to be matched by November, 2002!!!!! Great news from Richard and Helen DeVos! Their foundation granted an additional gift of $75,000 to CMA. This brings their total gift to $100,000. Thanks to Peter Secchia and Diana Sieger for their persistence and Richard and Helen for their continued generosity. Good news from Wolverine World Wide Foundation! We received a gift of $25,000 for CMA from Robert Sedrowski, Chairman of the Foundation. More hard work by Peter and Diana. Ranny Rieker, Elyse Rogers, Terry Pruitt and Judy Rapanos have been working overtime in Midland. We received a grant of $12,500 from the Charles J. Strosacker Foundation. As a result of the efforts of the Midland team we have pervasive representation from the Midland funding community. We still have two potential major gifts in Midland, through the Dow Chemical Company and the Gerstacker Foundation. Above and Beyond is a phrase that comes to mind with the gift of $10,000 from Bill and Nancy Richardson! Bill has done an incredible job in the Foundation Division of the campaign. The leadership gifts of $1,250,000 from Kellogg and Mott were largely through the efforts of Bill and Dottie Johnson. DaimlerChrysler' s total impact on this campaign may be as much as $6.2 million which will result in an annual return of $310,000 if Governor Engler is successful in leveraging additional support from General Motors that is consistent with support from DairnlerChrysler and Ford. • The ConnectMichigan Alliance campaign has realized $17.7 million of its $20 million goal (this figure includes campaign completion challenge grants from The Kresge Foundation and Dow Coming Foundation). A $1 million grant from DaimlerChrysler greatly enhances the successful completion of the campaign at a time when more than $5 million is available but also at risk (this includes the remaining balance of the state of Michigan's original challenge, the campaign completion challenge grants from The Kresge Foundation and Dow Corning Foundation, and other pending grant requests). �ConnectMichigan Alliance • The ConnectMichigan Alliance's (CMA) mission is to promote and strengthen a life-long ethic of service and civic engagement through the support of community building initiatives. • CMA was established to remove and protect Michigan's national model for volunteerism and service from national and state political changes. • CMA is the result of a four-year, statewide evaluation and planning process involving professionals and volunteers serving communities throughout the state. • CMA has established eight overarching long-range goals and objectives to guide the organization. o Increase access to professional development opportunities for staff and boards of volunteer-based nonprofits, faculty and staff of K-12 and higher education institutions, and staff and boards of community based organizations working to strengthen local leadership through service-learning opportunities for young people. o Increase long-term fmancial capacity of local Volunteer Centers and service education programs. o Provide citizens in each of Michigan's 83 counties with access to volunteer initiatives through local Volunteer Centers. o Create statewide networks to help local volunteer-based nonprofits develop new and long-term solutions to community problems. o Work in partnership with the MCSC and Michigan Department of Education to help local school districts promote and develop connections to their communities through volunteer and service-learning programs in grades K-12 . o Engage young adults in volunteering and service at every local post-secondary educational institution. o Improve the opportunities for local communities throughout Michigan to involve their citizens in community-wide, regional and state events that demonstrate and promote the power of volunteerism. o Increase local, regional and statewide visibility of the positive impacts of servicelearning, civic engagement and volunteerism. • CMA programs and services address four areas of need and potential: General Volunteerism; Youth Volunteerism; Higher Education; and Training and Technical Assistance. �• CMA creates a more comprehensive and collaborative approach to community building. CMA improves the ability of metropolitan Detroit nonprofit and public organizations and institutions, as well as those serving other communities throughout the state, to respond to the local needs. As a partner in local initiatives, CMA is not prescriptive in the application of its resources. Local nonprofits identify community needs and are able to access and apply CMA programs and services in a manner that best serves the Detroit metropolitan area. • CMA provides increased access to training and technical assistance necessary to build the capacity of local nonprofit organizations to meet their communities' most pressing social, charitable, economic, cultural, educational, faith-based, and civic needs. • CMA will provide access to a strong and effective Volunteer Center for every Michigan resident. Currently about 60 percent ofthe state's population has access to a local Volunteer Center. • CMA increases grant opportunities for local service learning programs to engage more Michigan young people in service. • CMA increases opportunities for local Volunteer Centers to engage more citizens, including families, in volunteerism and service. • CMA maximizes state and federal government resources to empower local communities to address their local challenges. • CMA increases the understanding and use of service-learning in the work of communitybased nonprofits, K-12 schools and institutions ofhigher education. • CMA provides much-needed statewide infrastructure support to local volunteer and service organizations working to maximize their capacities to improve the quality of life through volunteer human resources in communities throughout the state. It is estimated that thousands of Michigan volunteers annually will maximize their investment of time and expertise as a result of better coordinated local volunteer and service opportunities. • CMA creates higher efficiency in human and fmancial capital management by eliminating the territorial silos of Michigan's volunteer and service initiatives, by forming strategic partnerships between key stakeholders (local and state-level), and by coordinating available resources "under one roof." It is estimated that millions ofMichigan residents annually will benefit in terms of an increased quality of life as a result of local and statelevel coordination of resources and expertise. • CMA ensures continuity of resources, programs and services, and local impacts by transitioning state-managed volunteer and service programs, such as America' s Promise and Make-A-Difference Day, under private nonprofit sector management. This initiative effectively removes essential volunteer and service initiatives from the context of party politics on both state and national levels. CMA also maximizes the local impact of these �programs by developing a network through which practitioners can share priorities and best practice applications. The first statewide program coordinator for these and other future programs began service to local communities throughout the state on November 1, 2002. • CMA Program Coordinator • CMA maximizes the return on investment in volunteer and service initiatives by establishing an infrastructure that increases access to statewide resources encourages the sharing ofbest-practice methodologies throughout the state. The first incursion in this practice involves a strategic partnership between United Way Community Services of Detroit and CMA. The two organizations will support a Detroit CMA liaison who will be headquartered at UWCS in Detroit and have an office at CMA in Lansing. This ensures Southeastern Michigan will have immediate knowledge of and access to statewide resources. It also encourages the sharing ofbest-practice initiatives coming out of Southeastern Michigan, as well as those in other regions throughout the state. ConnectMichigan Alliance Impact • As CMA networks with nonprofit organizations serving metropolitan Detroit in employing strategies to meet its overarching goals, the following impacts will be realized in metropolitan Detroit (similar outcomes are projected for all Michigan communities): o Detroit organizations will have more skilled and dedicated volunteers and Board members because of increased access to regional professional development workshops and seminars. o The George W. Romney Volunteer Center and other regional Volunteer Centers serving metropolitan Detroit will increase their organizational capacities to provide universal access for every Detroit citizen to serve. o Detroit organizations will have access to resources necessary to convene local partners in the development of market-specific programming that encourages youth volunteerism, family volunteerism, rural business volunteer councils, and urban corporate volunteer councils. o Thousands of Detroit students will experience the benefits ofvolunteerism before graduating from high school and will have increased learning through "hands-on" and meaningful learning opportunities that are tied to "real-life" experiences. o Michigan Campus Compact will increase service-learning and civic engagement programming to reach all metropolitan Detroit institutions of higher education. I am enclosing recent information describing the CMA Partners, as well as a recent snapshot reflecting the current status of contributions, resulting matches by the State and cumulative totals of funds raised for the endowment. Notwithstanding the challenging economic environment, corporations, foundations, individuals and organizations are responding in a dramatic fashion! This is an opportunity to develop a sound infrastructure to strengthen volunteerism in Michigan. I can understand Julie's concern. However, on a very confidential note I can assure we will make our goal. While I am not in a position to disclose the information I am now sharing with you publicly, I have had initial discussions with the Michigan Nonprofit Association regarding a transfer of their Volunteerism Endowments to the CMA Endowment. The current value of these two endowments is $1,300,000. That will bring us within $650,000 of our goal and will give us several months to raise that amount. If my request is approved, it will take us about a month to transfer those endowments.
