Coming out of high school, I felt accomplished but as if I missed out on knowing my class as well as I could have. For me, this photo represents why I've struggled to really feel like I belong to any sort of broader GVSU community and why campus has always felt slightly hostile to me. GVSU claims to want to be a welcoming, accepting community, but how welcoming and accepting can a community really be when it charges membership fees? I've had to struggle and teeter on the edge of financial ruin in order to attend GVSU, and I consider myself lucky. I love my peers, professors, and classes, but as long as it has its hands in my already empty pockets, it'll always be tough for me to see GVSU as a community I belong to and not just a country club I can't really afford. It's been about a year since my father formally decided to disown me and ex-communicate me almost completely. His version of devout Christianity just didn't have room for a queer kid. In addition to the challenges of being financially and emotionally self-sufficient, it's been tough coming to terms with holding on to religion in the face of my own family using it against me. In this specific text message, my father told me that my "decision to rebel against the authority of God is dividing [our] family." Holding onto my religious beliefs has meant taking time to reflect on how my family interpretation of our shared religion doesn't have to compromise who I am as a Christian or as a queer person. I don’t have to choose one or the other. I can just be me. I hear the large groups of voices, singing and observing their religion. I always knew that the Jewish community was small, but growing up in a place with a large Jewish population, it was not something that I noticed until I came to campus. While being on campus I have missed that strong sense of Judaism, and the comfort that comes with having people that share your faith around you. I make use of it almost every weekday as I shuffle between my English classes in Lake Huron Hall and my history classes in Mackinac. It's invaluable to me, but it also kind of sucks. In the winter it becomes dangerously slippery and, with as crowded as it gets, I imagine many struggle to even make use of it I know I did when I walked with a cane for months after breaking my leg. Finding a church community often means grappling with significant trauma and pain caused by such groups. As a co-facilitator for a queer-oriented group on campus, I wanted to help provide a processing space where we as queer people could help talk about our experiences with religion and how choosing our spiritual future often means reckoning with our spiritual past. In our club discussion, we emphasized that we have the autonomy to choose how we live our lives going forward for some that may mean keeping our distance, but for some, we may still want to find a space where our spiritual and gender/sexual identities can exist in harmony. For those who are considering coming back to a religious space, this pamphlet was just one of the resources for finding local churches and organizations whose doors are open to those of us who have been shut out elsewhere. It offered a safe and welcoming space for discussing a sensitive topic like religion openly. Sharing my beliefs without fear of judgment allowed me to explore my spirituality and share a deeper aspect of myself with others. It made me realize that behind every face we encounter lies a unique story, full of personal practices and challenges. Learning about others' experiences was truly enlightening. I deeply appreciate the opportunity to engage in such meaningful dialogue, and I will miss the sense of safety and community that this space provided. Moving forward, I believe it's crucial to expand such initiatives to involve more people. As a Muslim, I often feel the weight of being a minority, facing judgment and criticism when discussing religion. Having a platform like this to address misconceptions and foster understanding was invaluable to me. I hope to see more opportunities like this in the future, where individuals from diverse backgrounds can come together, share their stories, and build bridges of empathy and understanding. Gilbert papers (RHC-183). Douglas R. Gilbert (b. 1942) is an American photographer from Michigan. He was born in Holland, Michigan and is the son of Russell W. and Carmen (Andree) Gilbert. Gilbert earned a B.A. in social sciences and art at Michigan State University in 1964, an M.S. in photography from the Institute of Design at Illinois Institute of Technology in 1972, and a M.S.W. from Salem State College in 1993. He is married to Barbara (McDonald) Gilbert, and has three daughters, Robyn, Rachel, and Anne. Gilbert took a serious interest in photography at the age of fourteen. In 1963 he joined the staff of Look magazine in New York as the second youngest photojournalist in the magazine's history. As a Look photographer from 1964 to 1966, he photographed folk musician Bob Dylan, the Newport Folk Festival, Simon and Garfunkel, the New York City Financial District, the children and facilities at the Manhattan School for Seriously Disturbed Children. From 1967 to 1969, Gilbert did several shoots, including that of folk singer Janis Ian for Life magazine. After moving to Chicago, Illinois in 1969 to attend the Illinois Institute of Technology, Gilbert conducted notable photo shoots of business and political figure Lenore Romney, and pursued more personal and artistic photography, focusing on urban and rural landscapes in Illinois and Michigan. He then joined the faculty of Wheaton College, where he taught from 1972 to 1982. In 1993, Gilbert graduated from Salem State College, Massachusetts, with a Masters in Social Work, and later pursued a second career as a psychotherapist. Douglas Gilbert died in June 2023. Throughout his photography career, he pursued both freelance commercial work as well as artistic work. His art photography is characterized by its classic black-and-white format, and features people, places and objects shot great attention and sensitivity. Gilbert's works are held in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, The Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, and the Grand Valley State University Art Galleries, as well as in numerous private and institutional collections.
