I apologize for not responding sooner, but for some unknown reason, I never received the letter. Now that Bob is retired, we have had to take a serious look at our priorities in giving. Our small family foundation has also diminished in size due to the depressed stock market. As much as we would like to contribute to "CMA" and many other requests, we feel it is better to give grants of$1,000-$10,000 directly to organizations in Grand Rapids (for example the YMCA/GR Service Corp which is very important to me!). I would feel uncomfortable signing a letter to the DeVoses and Cooks when we will not be contributing to "CMA." I am very sorry not to be able to help you and Peter out and also for the delay in my response. Bob and I wish you success! You have contributed so much in so many ways to the well being of our state, and we congratulate you for all your efforts. Hope to see you soon and will discuss "Connect Michigan" at that time. In January, we crossed over the halfway point of the campaign with a generous $1 million gift from the Ford Motor Company Fund. This takes our campaign to over $5.5 million. We are beginning our efforts to garner support from the West Michigan community. Peter Secchia has been championing our efforts there in partnership with Diana Sieger. Diana and Peter have been instrumental in raising the awareness with potential area supporters, but need additional support. You and Bob are well known for supporting service and volunteer efforts in the Grand Rapids community. You know that nonprofits need resources to ensure that they can support volunteers in their work. CMA is designed to help broker the services and resources local community-based organizations need. Judy, to ensure our success we need your help. We are focusing on a number of corporate and private foundations. While Peter and Diana have done a great job getting our word out, they need further validation of the merit of this exciting initiative. We are requesting your help in authoring a cover letter to the Dick and Betsy DeVos Foundation and the Peter Cook Foundation. Thank you for taking time from your busy schedule to discuss the Southeastern Michigan program coordinator representative from United Way Community Services to ConnectMichigan Alliance (CMA). The following is an articulation of the items we discussed: 1. The Southeastern Michigan Program Coordinator will report directly to you or your group vice president and we will contract with your office for that person's services. 2. The Program Coordinator will spend a maximum of one day per week in the CMA Lansing Office interacting with the Lansing Program Coordinator and other CMA Partner Program representatives. That person will be expected to attend statewide volunteer conferences sponsored by CMA or one of its partners. 3. While in the Lansing Office the Southeastern Michigan Program Coordinator will report directly to me. That reporting relationship will be focused on statewide program activities only. All employee and work related issues, such as evaluations, performance appraisals and work place benefits will be within the purview of United Way Community Services. The Southeastern Michigan Program Coordinator will be considered a contract employee to CMA. 4. CMA will cover up to 50% of the Program Coordinator's salary and travel expenses to CMA or Partner activities. All travel expenses must be approved by you, or your group vice president, or me. 5. CMA will provide office space in the Lansing Office for the Southeastern Michigan Program Coordinator. 6. The Southeastern Michigan Program Coordinator position will be filled in late May or June of 2003. If we do not begin to receive substantial payment of current pledges, the creation of the position might be pushed back until July of 2003 to parallel the 2003/2004 Fiscal Year Budget. We will keep you informed on our fundraising activities. Virgil, you and I will have time to refine the job description. However, simply stated, it will be this Coordinator's responsibility to coordinate current programs between Southeastern Michigan and the State which might have some synergistic relationship. Moreover that Coordinator will insure that all newly created programs reflect the ongoing needs of Southeastern Michigan and the State of Michigan. On June 26, 2002, Governor and Mrs. Engler and Julie Fisher Cummings and Peter Cummings will be sponsoring a luncheon at the Detroit Athletic Club with 50 CEO's of major Corporations and Organizations capable of giving a minimum of$100,000 to CMA.We have estimated a potential amount in access of $1,500,000 from that effort. We have also received two additional gifts of $250,000 from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, making them our two largest contributors at $1,250,000 each. Request an extension from the Governor of the state matching grant (realizing that his ability to grant such a request only stretches as far as his administration which will end in January of 2003). 2. Maintain the CMA on the funds aquired to date and allow whatever pledges and checks coming in between now and November to be matched by state funds and then close out the campaign. This would mean that if the $10 million mark was not reached, the remaining $2.5 million in State of Michigan Challenge Grant funds, $lmillion Kesge Challenge Grant funds and $100,000 Dow Corning Challenge Grant funds would not be met and allowed to expire. 3. Request an extension from the Michigan Legislature. Many times the legislature is asked to extend funds beyond a budget cycle due to various circumstances (building projects take longer than 12 months, initiatives begin late, etc.) These are commonly referred to as "Work Projects." The latest news from the Department of Management and Budget is that Work Projects are being reviewed in greater detail to find budget relief and will be granted sparingly. The CMA Endowment was granted a Work Project last year. An additional Work Project request would be required for and extension beyond the current fiscal agreement. 4. Develop a permanently endowed fund at the CRCF to be administered by the MCSC for the State of Michigan for the purposes originally intended. In other words, the remaining funds would be transferred from the non-permanent fund to a permanent fund from which the proceeds would be granted to the CMA for support of the CMA functions as the current CMA Endowment Funds is set up to do. The difference between the two is that the State of Michigan, through the MCSC, retains control of the funds and the corpus remains separate from the CMA Permanent Endowment Fund. This would mean a substantially smaller return on the funds.
