Mott Foundation for his willingness to commit a $1 million pledge to the ConnectMichigan Alliance Campaign (CMA)-a $20 million endowment campaign to strengthen service and volunteerism in Michigan. She asked that I contact you directly to confirm. Mrs. Engler made the request in her role as Co-chair of the ConnectMichigan Alliance (CMA) Campaign. She asked that I contact you to ensure that the call is placed on the Governor's schedule. The Governor's involvement started with the $10 million challenge grant he made to the campaign as part oflast year's budget supplemental. I along with Mrs. Engler and others met with the Governor last year about this initiative and he has been thoroughly briefed on the CMA (formerly known as the Alliance). Mr. White was approached by Robert Collier from the Council of Michigan Foundations on behalf of the campaign, and asked to commit $1 million. He agreed and Rob, after �gaining the approval of Mrs. Engler, said that either Mrs. Engler or the Governor would follow up with a call after a written proposal had been submitted. The proposal was submitted and has been received by the Foundation. Mrs. Engler said that it would be better for the Governor to make the call to give the conversation and consideration of the proposal higher status given that $1 million is a leadership gift to the campaign. The call should be made this week (11/27- 12/1) or the beginning of next week (12/412/5) as the C.S. Mott Foundation Board of Trustees will meet on December 6, 2000 to consider and hopefully fund the proposal. A call from the Governor would transmit to the Board, just how committed the State of Michigan is to this endeavor and give the proposal more significance. As an update to the Governor on the Campaign, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation has committed $1 million to the campaign and its CEO, Wm. Richardson has agreed to cochair the campaign along with Mrs. Engler and Mrs. Julie Fisher Cummings. Mr. White's assistant's nan1e is Ms. Jean Simi and the number at the Foundation is 810238-5651 . The video is being crafted to explain to donors and the public exactly the purpose behind the ConnectMichigan Alliance. The questions are all geared around the theme of Michigan's history of volunteerism and why the state investment is important. The questions are in bold and the answers I have given are off the top of my head and need more work, but I wanted to get you something. Kyle Please explain why Michigan has such a rich history in terms of volunteerism. Volunteers and the charitable actions they take on the part of others helps to weave the civil fabric of our society. It (volunteerism) acts to bind us in a commonality unique to American society. In Michigan we see volunteerism as a way of connecting with others in ways we can't through our jobs, our schools or the media. Governor Romney believed that civic engagement and individual responsibility were the cornerstones of our democracy. His belief that people helping people was the most enduring form of community problem solving rings true today. - young people serving in their communties - the croping up of volunteer centers across the state - national attention to volunteering through programs like AmeriCorps, the Peace Corps, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and many other programs. No where are these intitiaves more prevelant than in Michigan where we have a strong association of volunteer centers; a nationally reknown state commission on volunteerism; an impressive number of colleges and universities devoted to instilling an ethic of service in their students, faculty and staff; and one of the nation's best associations of nonprofits and grant makers. Michigan truly is the Volunteer State. Why do you believe that the coming together of these organizaitons will benefit every community in Michigan? In its simplest form, the ConnectMichigan Alliance is about bringing these tremendous forces together to support our state's volunteers. Volunteerism isn't free and it doesn't just happen as some would lead others to believe. Volunteers need support, coordination, technical assistance and resources to effectively impact the lives of others in meaningful ways. The ConnectMichigan Alliance, the ConnectMichigan Alliance Campaign and the endowment that will be formed will ensure that we can recruit, place, support, recognize and engage our volunteers now and in the future. How do you think that this coming together is going to imact the growth of volunteerism in Michigan? As stated earlier—volunteerism isn't free. And if volunteering was easy, more people would be doing it and half of the world's problems would be solved. But it isn't easy and it does take resources to support the work of our state's volunteers. But is about more than just growth. We are seeing a gradual decline in the volunteers in our communities. Hospitals, schools, human societies and other nonprofits are continously hampered by a lack of volunteers. We need to build in the next generations, a sense of duty-a desire to give back through service. The ConnectMichigan Alliance will help do this by providing support to our current volunteers and recruit new volunteers among our young people. And it should be noted that just the process of building the ConnectMichigan Alliance is a demonstration of the kind of innovative thinking we are able to highlight in Michigan. The ConnectMichigan Alliance will be supported by an endowment that was formed through a public private partnership. It is this ingenuity and creative problem solving that typifies how Michigan can get things done. Why did the Governor feel it is important to sign the Bill into law and set up this challenge grant? The ConnectMichigan Alliance respresents something and the Governor and Mrs. Engler and the late Governor George Romney had talked about years ago. What if we could bring together the powerful force of human kindness, harness it and channel it toward the solution of our society's most vexing challenges? How would it happen? What would be needed? Over the past decade the answers to those questions have been answered-one at a time, bit by bit. What support would be needed at the local level? Places where people could go to learn about a volunteer need and where organizations could recruit volunteers. What keeps the support for volunteers strong? Strong nonprofit organizations that have a strong network of support and a voice that is heard at the local, state and national levels. What helps to foster more volunteers? PURPOSE Mrs. Engler spoke to the Governor about making a thank you call to William White, President and CEO of the C.S. Mott Foundation for his willingness to commit a $1 million pledge to the ConnectMichigan Alliance Campaign (CMA)-a $20 million endowment campaign to strengthen service and volunteerism in Michigan. II. BACKGROUND Mrs. Engler made the request in her role as Co-chair of the ConnectMichigan Alliance (CMA) Campaign. She asked that I contact you to ensure that the call is placed on the Governor's schedule. The Governor's involvement started with the $10 million challenge grant he made to the campaign as part of last year's budget supplemental. I, along with Mrs. Engler and others met with the Governor last year about this initiative and he has been thoroughly briefed on the CMA (formerly known as the Alliance). A copy of the case statement, organizational chart and brief description of the Alliance is attached. Robert Collier initially approached Mr. White from the Council of Michigan Foundations on behalf of the campaign, and he asked Mr. White to commit $1 million. He agreed and Rob, after gaining the approval of Mrs. Engler, said that either Mrs. Engler or the Governor would follow up with a call after a written proposal had been submitted. The proposal was submitted and has been received by the Foundation. Mrs. Engler said that it would be better for the Governor to make the call to give the conversation and consideration of the proposal higher status given that $1 million is a leadership gift to the campaign. The call should be made this week (11/27- 12/1) or the beginning of next week (12/4-12/5) as the C.S. Mott Foundation Board of Trustees will meet on December 6, 2000 to consider and hopefully fund the proposal. A call from the Governor would transmit to the Board, just how committed the State of Michigan is to this endeavor and give the proposal more significance. III. EVENT SCENARIO The Governor might want to inform Mr. White that he (the Governor) understands that there was a $ 1 million grant proposal submitted to his office and that it had been assigned to his executive assistant, Kevin F. Walker on November 7, 2000 and that the Governor would greatly appreciate the C.S. Mott Foundation's participation in the campaign. This $1 million contribution would be matched by SI million in state funding as part of a S10 million challenge grant. The funds ($10 million from the private sector and $10 million from the state) will be housed in an endowment at the Capital Region Community Foundation and will support the programs and activities of the state's premiere volunteer support programs including: Volunteer Centers of Michigan, Michigan Campus Compact, America's Promise: The Alliance for Youth, Make A Difference Day and the Volunteer Recognition Clearinghouse. It is vital to the campaign that the largest foundations in the State of Michigan commit lead gifts of at least $ 1 million. As an update to the Governor on the Campaign, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation has committed $1 million to the campaign and its CEO, Wm. Richardson has agreed to co-chair the campaign along with Mrs. Engler and Mrs. Julie Fisher Cummings. Dr. Russell G. Michigan Fundraising Strategy Notes: In addition to reaffirming what is commonly known about Grand Rapids (specifically, that its philanthropic interests are regional in nature), PS explained the unique stewardship that occurs within Grand Rapids specifically and that even within that community, only those who reside in Grand Rapids are considered true members of the community. Most notable examples of this are Bob & Judy Hooker who now reside (a good portion of the time) outside of Michigan. Any message must be tailored to keeping the good things going in Grand Rapids and demonstrating how CMA will provide a continuous level of support into the future. The investments need to show that the money donated is working in Grand Rapids for Grand Rapids. Transition in leadership at the state level was discussed as a possible justification for developing the CMA. PS interests are primarily focused on helping the Englers since Mrs. Engler asked him. While receptive, Peter Secchia clearly did not understand what the CMA would do for Grand Rapids and was not receptive to the concept until we were able to target a specific example of how one of the partners in the CMA was impacting a component of the community (discussed the Creston Neighborhood AmeriCorps program that MCSC currently funds). More examples like this will have to be crafted before seeking funding in this community.
