It is the fourth of the five copies made by Lincoln of his immortal speech. It is the second draft of what is known as the standard version of the Address, viz., the speech as it was delivered by Lincoln at the dedication of the Gettysburg Battlefield Cemetery. The first two drafts in the Library of Congress differ from the spoken Address, viz., from the Bancroft manuscript, in several particulars, most important of which is the omission of the significant words, "Under God." The first draft to contain these words is what is known as the Keyes copy, which is now in private hands. The first two drafts, made prior to the delivery of the Address, are in the Library of Congress. The present manuscript has been until recently in the possession of the Bancroft family. It is in magnificent state of preservation. Its condition, in fact, is the finest of any of the five copies. Also, it has this important superiority over any of the other four copies. It is the only one accompanied by a letter (A.L.S.) of Lincoln transmitting the manuscript; it has the original envelope addressed and franked by Lincoln as well. This gives to the Bancroft copy an outstanding distinction. The manuscript is written on two quarto sheets; the letter on one page octavo. What is the commercial value of this manuscript? No American manuscript of greater interest or importance has ever come into the market place. What shall it be compared with? With the transcript of the Declaration of Independence in the hand of Thomas Jefferson? With the manuscript of Washington's Farewell Address? But these two are permanently locked in institutional collections forever beyond the reach of a private collector. Certainly it is reasonably conservative to regard Lincoln's Gettysburg Address as the most valuable, the most important American manuscript that is now or is ever likely to come within the range of even the wealthiest collectors' powers of acquisition. Charles Sumner said of the Gettysburg Address: "That speech, uttered at the field of Gettysburg and now sanctified by the martyrdom of its author, is an immortal act… The battle itself was less important than the speech. Ideas are always more than battles." If the Gettysburg Address were his only legacy to posterity, it would justly entitle Lincoln to a foremost place in the pantheon of immortals. �Executive Mansion Washington, Feb. 29, 1864 Hon.
