In this ritual, lamps are lit as an offering to the divine. The light from the lamp symbolizes knowledge and the power of the sacred, while the wick represents the ego, and the oil signifies our negative tendencies. When lit by spiritual knowledge, these negative tendencies are gradually eliminated, and the ego eventually perishes. There are various ways of performing puja: light lamps in front of a deity, some in front of the Tulasi plant, and some light lamps at dawn and dusk. The type of oil and wick used also holds significance. For instance, cow's ghee ensures radiance, prosperity, health, and happiness. Similarly, a cotton wick brings prosperity and all good fortune. The chanting of slokas or hymns also accompanies the lighting of the lamp. In Islam, prayer, being the second pillar of the faith, holds significant importance. Muslims adhere to a disciplined practice of praying five times a day, each within specific time windows. There are 17 obligatory units of Salah spread throughout these five daily prayers, and each unit consists of two sajdah (prostrations). This image not only signifies the personal devotion of individuals but also highlights the inclusive environment fostered by the university, providing a space for spiritual reflection and connection regardless of one's faith tradition. For me, Salah (prayer) is a profound experience where I feel deeply connected to God. It's a time when I am away from all worldly tensions, allowing me to find peace and solace for my soul. Each prostration (sajdah) during prayer brings immense benefits, including physical relaxation, mental clarity, and spiritual elevation. It's a moment of submission and humility before the Divine, offering a sense of renewal and inner tranquility that carries me through the challenges of daily life. Every reference was treated with a great deal of sterility and distance if not complete dismissal. So to find out we had an entire little library on campus dedicated to queer literature was beyond wonderful. Everything I had wished I was able to read growing up was right here in one place. To have something like this on campus is such a joy because it means our stories get to be celebrated just like everyone else's. I judge myself harshly that I don’t fit into any one category and get in my own way of belonging to any one thing. I judge others (even though I am trying to break this habit) before I enable myself to open up to others. My fear of rejection holds me back from feeling belonging with friends and family. GVSU helps to provide spaces that I feel like I belong to and helps me discover people who care just as deeply about others and diverse viewpoints, providing me sanctuary. GVSU feels safe to me. Coming out of high school, I felt accomplished but as if I missed out on knowing my class as well as I could have. If future Franklin pointed out all the ways I went wrong to my past self right after graduation, that is probably the look I would be giving them as I thought over the circumstances. For me, this photo represents why I've struggled to really feel like I belong to any sort of broader GVSU community and why campus has always felt slightly hostile to me. GVSU claims to want to be a welcoming, accepting community, but how welcoming and accepting can a community really be when it charges membership fees? I've had to struggle and teeter on the edge of financial ruin in order to attend GVSU, and I consider myself lucky. I love my peers, professors, and classes, but as long as it has its hands in my already empty pockets, it'll always be tough for me to see GVSU as a community I belong to and not just a country club I can't really afford. It's been about a year since my father formally decided to disown me and ex-communicate me almost completely. His version of devout Christianity just didn't have room for a queer kid. In addition to the challenges of being financially and emotionally self-sufficient, it's been tough coming to terms with holding on to religion in the face of my own family using it against me. In this specific text message, my father told me that my "decision to rebel against the authority of God is dividing [our] family." I make use of it almost every weekday as I shuffle between my English classes in Lake Huron Hall and my history classes in Mackinac. It's invaluable to me, but it also kind of sucks. In the winter it becomes dangerously slippery and, with as crowded as it gets, I imagine many struggle to even make use of it I know I did when I walked with a cane for months after breaking my leg. Finding a church community often means grappling with significant trauma and pain caused by such groups. As a co-facilitator for a queer-oriented group on campus, I wanted to help provide a processing space where we as queer people could help talk about our experiences with religion and how choosing our spiritual future often means reckoning with our spiritual past. In our club discussion, we emphasized that we have the autonomy to choose how we live our lives going forward for some that may mean keeping our distance, but for some, we may still want to find a space where our spiritual and gender/sexual identities can exist in harmony. For those who are considering coming back to a religious space, this pamphlet was just one of the resources for finding local churches and organizations whose doors are open to those of us who have been shut out elsewhere. By using predominantly mobile-phone photography, these students explored what it meant to believe and belong on campus and in the greater West Michigan community. This project was designed to help capture their experiences and stories, to enable them to find their voice through photography. The cohort culminated in an exhibition displayed on multiple GVSU campuses and curated by the students around three self-selected themes: Religious & Spiritual Practices, Barriers to Belonging, and Creating Welcoming Spaces.
