Harper, Dean of Social Sciences Re: New Coordinator for WGS cc: All Faculty I'm pleased to report that Linda Chown , Associate Professor of English, has accepted the appointment of Coordinator of the Women and Gender Studies (WGS) Program effective June 1, 1998. She replaces Christine O'Connor (Psychology) who did an excellent jab this past year in restructuring curriculum to include women and gender course offerings from various disciplines and to get the program renamed. I know we all appreciate Chris' hard work and dedication. I have no doubt she' 11 continue to be active in the program. Linda has been quite involved with the Women's Studies Program in past years, co-chairing the Women Scholar's Faculty Forum for various years, participating in the Women's Festival, serving as Acting Coordinator AND Women ' s Festival Chair during Winter Semester 1995. In fact, it is Linda who established the basic format for the first Festival . Speaking of Festival, Linda is eager to get started on tying down some fundamental plans far the March 1999 interation. She WELCOMES suggestions and , espcially, volunteers who might like to act as co-chairs and/ or to become involved in the planning . She also would welcome volunteers to organize the Women Scholar ' s Faculty Forum. The program, provided in partnership with the Women's Center, focuses on women and gender issues in the region and explores global feminist perspectives. Participants examine how issues such as reproductive health, education, violence, political representation and participation, Apartheid, and the new democracy intersect and impact the role of women within various societal and class structures. Students divide their time between service learning, academic lectures, and excursions in Johannesburg and Cape Town. In addition to The Apartheid Museum and a tour of Soweto and Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg, students experience the Cape of Good Hope, Boulders National Park, and the Botanical Gardens in Cape Town, and Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. The substantial service-learning component is provided through SHAWCO, a non-governmental organization based in Cape Town. SHAWCO has years of experience guiding students in their work with adults and children in one of six local township centers that focus on education, health, social and community issues. This format allows students to move beyond the classroom and become a part of the communities they are studying. WHEN CAN I GO? This six week program will depart May 9, 2012 and return June 17, 2012. WHERE WILL I LIVE? Students will stay in a privately run residence. WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE? Open to all students who have completed at least one WGS course. GPA of 2.5 and submit a complete application by February 1, 2012. Additional need-based study abroad grants are also available to eligible students. Early application for financial aid is strongly recommended. GRANTS GVSU offers grants to be used specifically for faculty-led programs. These grants, which are approximately $500, are based on financial need only-academic or other criteria are not taken into consideration. All degree-seeking students accepted into a GVSU faculty-led program are automatically considered for the grant if they have a current FAFSA on file in the Financial Aid Office. The purpose of Change U is to further strengthen social justice movements on and off campus by fostering cross-issue, intergenerational, and diverse partnerships between the GVSU community and social justice efforts throughout the area. Participants will work together to build a vision for a transformed society. Change U will examine issues such as racial justice and economic justice and how our power, to create change, multiplies exponentially when we begin to understand the ways in which these social problems interconnect. Participants will learn concrete skills to create change, build a vision for a transformed society and pursue their passion to change the world! _This trai11ing series will be facilitated by a diverse te~m of educators who speciclliZ~ in multi_-iswe and crosscommunity organizing.
