" It stopped me fo r a minute. I had begun reading The Vagina Monologues by Eve Easler and I thought "what does a wooden cunt look like?" Wouldn't it have certai n aspects of beauty? I want to help women become aware of the traits of an abusive relationship so they know what to watch out for. I hope it prevents women from becoming involved in an abusive relationship. Monica Johnstone A Rose By Any Other Technique Quilt, 2006 The rose has been a frequent and perhaps overburdened symbol since antiquity which has a strong tradition in quilting. This work explores the many ways that rose and its attendant quilting have been rendered by needleworkers as distinct and disparate as the Amish, the trapunto artists of Provencal, the makers of Baltimore Album quilts in the mid-19th C, to modem master quilters such as Karen McTavish, and the mixed textile artists who stretch the definition of the quilt and use high tech materials in their embellishments. These artists, the vast majority of whom are women, enter into a kind of historical dialogue through their work. I sought to bring their "voices" together in this etude on technique. Sook-Young Augustin Self Identity Watercolor, 2008 I wanted to show a simple representation of a self portrait. The realistic shadows and highlights divide the face. The paper at the point when the halves come together is blank to emphasize the division. It is the emotional, mental, psych~logi cal, and physical divide a woman (or anyone) feels after being sexually assaulted. The light side is the hope for the future that things will get better; and it won't necessarily happen again. The darker side is the pain that lingers for the rest of your life. Wade. The author of the book Before Roe will be on campus to highlight the various discourses - legal, medical, and feminist - that played a role in shaping the decision in Roe. Since the pre-Roe history is usually not given mu.ch attention in tRe literature, she will highlight the short amount of time 1t took pro-abortion forces in the 1960s to legitimize the practice of abortion. Rosemary Nossiff received her Ph.d" from Cornell University in 1994. She currently teaches American Government at the University of New Hampshire. Her book, Before Roe, analyzes the political developments that led up to the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973. No RSVP necessary. Give Women a Leg Up! - Community Response Project Sponsors: Women's Center and the Grand Rapi'ds Women's Resource Center The Women's Resource Center's "Working Women's Clothes Closet" provides gently used professional clothing for women wh o would be unable to purchase these items on their own. These women need clothing for interviewing and entering the professional workplace. Pantyhose are a vital part of looking well dressed . The goal of the program is to provide every woman who goes to the WRC for clothing with two pairs of nylons. In an effort to support this p roject, the GVSO Women's Center is requesting new pantyhose donations throughout the semester. They need all sizes and colors, but especially darker colors and the larger sizes, queen, 2x, 3x, 4x or larger. Thank you for helping the Women's Resource Center meet this goal!
