In Normal Life, Dean uses Critical Race Theory, women of color feminism, and other intellectual t raditions to analyze the role of law reform in contemporary queer and trans politics. He examines the poverty, violence, criminalization and immigration enforcement facing trans populations, and questions the utility of anti-discrimination law and hate crimes laws for addressing these harms. Nash's involvement in the nonviolent movement began in 1959. In 1961 she coordinated the Freedom Ride from Birmingham, Alabama, to Jackson, Mississippi, a story which was documented in the recent PBS American Experience film "Freedom Riders:' Her many arrests for civil rights activities culminated in Nash being imprisoned for 30 days in, while she was pregnant with her first child. Undeterred, she went on to join a national committee to which she was appointed by President John F. Kennedy that promoted passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. OWS has become a touchstone for a vast array of grievances. As an active participant in the OWS movement with many years' experience as an organized leftist, Wolf will challenge students to think through their own preconceived notions of how our society operates and can change. Wolf will explore how this movement came about and is evolving to challenge corporate power and inequality in ways not seen for 40 years. For more information visit www.gvsu.edu/lgbtrc/OWS �Not Just a Game: Politics and Power in American Sports February 2 at 4 pm I 2250 Kirkhof Center, Grand River John Carlos, winner of the bronze medal in the men's 200-meter race at the 1968 Summer Olympics, entered the Olympic Games with one thing in mind - to reach the platform in order to send a message. Along with Tommie Smith, his teammate and winner of the gold medal, the message was sent, reverberating throughout the world. Smith and Carlos raised blackgloved fists crowning bowed heads to humbly reflect the strength of the black power and human rights salutes. In addition to Carlos, renowned American sportswriter Dave Zirin, will be a part of the program and will show segments of his documentary movie, Not Just a Game: Politics and Power in American Sports. The striking image of Carlos raising his fist toward the sky is well known, but his story and that of other athlete activists - is not. With the entire landscape of sports as their focus, Carlos and Zirin examine how racism, sexism and homophobia play out in American sports. Students increase their civic engagement skills by examining dynamics that create oppression as well as looking at how change is created . While working for equality and justice for the LGBTO communities, it is necessary to recognize the intersections of all justice issues. Through discussion, readings, movies, conferences, projects, speakers, and community projects, Pipeline leaders increase their awareness of justice issues and the impact of other "isms" on their community and in social justice work. In the second semester, students work together on a social justice project of their choosing either on campus or in the community. Last year's Pipeline leaders created the Gender Neutral Housing Coalition for the purpose of expanding campus housing options to better meet the needs of our LGBTO students.
