Mount Washington 24th of June
Sir
I have to acknowledge the receipt of your last enclosing Returns for May & a List of Negroes &c together
with appropriate remarks. I have to thank you for the observations you have made which throw much light
upon the subject. I am aware of the enormity of the rent but what can a man do when he can do no better.
I was much surprised at George coming to me the other day & soliciting to be sent to the White House
saying he would rather suffer with his family than to be without them. I shall send him down by Larry the
moment my Harvest is finished when you can bestow on him an ample correction & thus the affair will end.
The rascal vexed me the more [&] I had determined to put myself to some trouble in getting him a good
master. I wish you to put me up two Beeves in time for the Winter as I shall have to trouble you to salt them
for me since I have none at this place. We are all washed away here by incredible rain, such never were
known before & have done vast injury. I am pleased to see you have so fine a stock of hogs. I shall send
you a Boar of [?] breed as soon as I can make it convenient. Had I a vessell or could I afford to buy one I
could supply you with many usefull things, but at present it is so hard to get a Skipper to go up the River
unless it is for a full load of grain I would advise selling the Mare & two Colts for 300$ if it can be obtained & I
send you the pedigree accordingly.
I Remain Sir
Your Very Obt

Whereas, in pursuance of a decree of the Court of Chancery held at Huntsville for the 29th Chancery District
of the State of Alabama, made at the special term of said court, held on the last monday in January 1854 in
a cause therein pending, between Samuel Townsend [1] and John E. Townsend executors of the last will

We, Thomas Townsend, Samuel C. Townsend, Henrietta Johnson, Muntford R. Townsend, Parkes S.
Townsend, Jones D. Crow, & Upton S. Crow

part hereby covenant and agree, that neither of us nor our heirs, executors or administrators, shall or will at
any time exact or require of or from the said Samuel Townsend & John E. Townsend any part or portion of

or by any person or persons, on their behalf, or under any pretence whatsoever, for the recovery of their
freedom, or of any part of portion of the property or estate of said testator, that we will, in proportion to the

of such term of years, as by law any proceedings for the recovery of said property shall be by law, effectually

My Dear Friend
Abm L. Pennock
Hope this will find Thyself. Dear Wife. & children favoured with health. I was in hopes of receiving an answer
to my letter from this Land. Perhaps I have displeased Thee by too freely cautioning Thee against too active
a part in the Abolition Societies. if so or in any other way I am sorry for it. Thou know I have allways used
great freedom with Thee, particularly on this Subject I have never discovered any displeasure from a belief I
apprehend that it was done in true love to the Man (Tho from a weak & erring Brother. who has truly nothing
to boast of save manifold infirmities) & apprehending that Thou and Thine being in much danger from this
cause of suffering loss in your spiritual concerns.
as many have done we know whose harms ought to be our warning. Thou knows that it is not my wish to
discourage Thee from continuing to do much in this cause of suffering humanity but rather, that all should be
done within the bounds (which are not very limited) advised by the Church of of which Thou art an important
Member, & thereby preserve Thy use & influence in it & in the very best of causes, is what I am desirous of
& concerned about for Thy own & Familys sake & also for the sake of the Church in which Thou knows there
has been many & still is to whom the Cause of the poor slave has felt & is felt very near & dear & prepared
like Thyself to make considerable sacrifice for their freedom And count it a favour that Thou belongs to a
Church the Most Abolition of any & does much (The little to what Thou thinks They aught to do) to set the
Captive & oppressed free.
The British Friend has created here rather a bitter feeling towards the largest portion of our Society on your
Side of the Atlantic on the above subject. which is a serious & sorrowl thing.- may Thou be preserved from
any part in this & from every other hurtful thing either to Thyself Dear Family or the Church continues to be
the desire of Thy (very distantly separated but) affectionate friend who concludes in much love to Thy worthy
& much valued Family whose welfare I also desire Alexr Dirkind
P.S. Wish Thou wouldest be so kind as to write to me soon & inform how Thy concerns are doing at
Holmesburg &c &c, as I am interested in thy temporal as well as Spiritual wellfare. And also I may add (but
in Confidence) when Thou canst place me in a little post there as there would be no difficulty I apprehend in
getting a snug & deacent dwelling in the village which I think would be next to the most desirable position
(Viz) Land sufficient to keep a cow & horse pig & fowls with a moderate sized garden my message above
extends to Thy sons [?] G.[eorge] & [?] D. M. & [L]
