Description
An account of the resource
Photographs, negatives, and lantern slides digitized from the papers of engineer and archaeologist Robert H. Merrill. A Grand Rapids native, Merrill held an accomplished career as a civil engineer. He founded the company Spooner & Merrill, which held offices in Grand Rapids and Chicago. From 1919-1921, Merrill lived in China, working as Assistant Principal Engineer on a reconstruction of the Grand Canal - the oldest and longest canal system in the world. Merrill became fascinated by archaeology, and among other projects, he traveled to the Uxmal Pyramids in Yucatan, Mexico, with a research expedition from Tulane University. Merrill's photo collection includes images of his travels and projects, friends and family.

Welcome To The Campus
GRAND VALLEY STATE COLLEGE
Grand Valley State College was established in 1960 and enrolled its pioneer class in September, 1963. The college is located
on an 876-acre campus in Ottawa county, 12 miles west of Grand
Rapids . The land is bordered by the Grand River, where a bluff
rises high above the west bank and divides into deep ravines separating a series of plateaus upon which the college buildings are
located.
GVSC provides a four-year academic program leading to the
Bachelor of Arts (AB) degree. Major programs are offered in the
following subjects:
Humanities: English Language and Literature, French, German,
Russian and Spanish
Social Studies: Economics, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology
Natural Sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics,
and Physics
Minor programs are offered in each of the subject areas (except Geology) and in the following additional subjects:
Anthropology, Art, History of Science, Music, and Physical
Education.
Special studies and training, including service in area public
schools, lead to elementary, junior high, and secondary school
teaching certification.
Business administration: a program in business administration
is offered within the Economics department.
Pre-professional studies: included in the curriculum are programs to prepare students for professional studies such as law,
medicine, and engineering, among others.

An account of the resource
Photographs, negatives, and lantern slides digitized from the papers of engineer and archaeologist Robert H. Merrill. A Grand Rapids native, Merrill held an accomplished career as a civil engineer. He founded the company Spooner & Merrill, which held offices in Grand Rapids and Chicago. From 1919-1921, Merrill lived in China, working as Assistant Principal Engineer on a reconstruction of the Grand Canal - the oldest and longest canal system in the world. Merrill became fascinated by archaeology, and among other projects, he traveled to the Uxmal Pyramids in Yucatan, Mexico, with a research expedition from Tulane University. Merrill's photo collection includes images of his travels and projects, friends and family.

Over 12,000 ft. 16mm movie film from 1931-1935 documents Angus' family, friends, business, and travels to Florida, Niagara Falls, Michigan and Indiana, the Smoky Mountains, and throughout the North and Southwest, and Mexico.
