caused by a fire, but Western diplomats,
speaking on condition of anonymity, said they
had heard reports of a possible military coup

The explosions, which occurred during
morning rush hour Sunday, sent missiles and
grenades slamming into buildings, buses and
cars.
Also Sunday, eight people were killed in a
fire at an arms factory near Lahore, 140 miles
south of Islamabad, and three people were injured by a bomb that exploded in Karachi, 650

Tickets for the Sept. 24 solo recital by world-class violinist Itzhak
Perlman will be available by
phone or mail order only beginning
today at Tickets Muskegon in the
L.C. Walker Arena box office.
The concert by the celebrated Israeli-born artist, who is generally
recognized as the world's premier
violinist, will mark the beginning
of the eight-month local Jewish
Centennial Celebration that will
feature more than 50 additional
programs and events.
PERLMAN'S RECITALS traditionally are an informal gathering
at which classics are counter-bal-
anced with pops miniatures, along
with commentary by the soloist. A
1980 Newsweek cover story said,
"Perlman is the consummate master of the violin - exuberant, indomitable, with a love of playing
that is irresistible." ,
'·When the Frauenthal Center
wanted.to invite Itzhak Perlman to
perform a solo recital in Muskegon, the Jewish Centennial Committee enthusiastically responded
and ·decided to try to center the
gala opening of the project around
his performance," said Sylvia

chairwoman.

The controversial 61st annual West Michigan

are drawing negative reaction from local art lovers,
some of whom are withdrawing their financial contributions to the Muskegon Museum of Art.
In response to the criticism, the museum is conducting a public forum Sunday to hear comments
about the art show.
MMA Director Al Kochka said he has heard much
negative response to the Regional, and several museum supporters have shown their displeasure by withholding their financial contributions.

color, and a type of ~rcelain jar. This quilt explores that evolution from the
natural through the screen (literal and figurative} to associations in human
culture. Hand dyed, sprayed and painted silk and cotton, commercially
available cotton fabric, traditional applique, dimensional applique, and
reverse applique; hand quilted including Kanji script for "ginger".

Untitled from the Life Size and Other Lies Series
Durachrome Print, 2007
for this series, I constructe,d a room sealed to the c;hild's kitchen set
(fortuitously named "life Size") to evoke a claustrophobic quality for the
models that don't fit; echoing the real life response of women performing
sisyphean domestic chores. Have the three women depicted in the photograph evolved beyond the manipulations they seem to be performing on
their miniature versions in the dollhouse?
Darlene Kaczmarczyk
Water Fitness Instructor from the Apron Women Series
Chromogenic Print, 2007
for this series, I photographed women over 40 at work wearing the
non-functional aprons that were worn for entertaining in the 1950's. If the
"dressy" apron was emblematic of the housewife status 50 years ago, does
this slightly surreal juxtaposition invite thoughts of how far we've come, or
how much further we need to go? Have we evolved from the happy housewjfe?

Of 1000 Senses (I and II)
Intaglio, Body Print, 2011
_
"Of 1000 Senses" is a meditation on the body's.memory of land and place.
Each mark recalls the rhythms of footstep and breath - reminders of the
thinness of our skin and the fragile separation between our flesh and the flesh
of the world. Most of all, it represents a re-acquaintance with and adaptation
to the environment - an evolution in the truest sense, choosing change over
progress.

Masai
Pendl1 2011
t
This pJece was motivated by the history I learned about the Masai and t~eir
nomadic lifestyle. They treasure their beads as a form of beauty. With time,
their displays have evolved to a more contemporary look but at the same time
keeping with tradition.

The Constraint
Watercolor/Ink, 2011
.
Many problems wittf the treatment of women have had to do with an
imposed set of rules and expectations from an outside source. This painting
shows, through symbolic forms, that there have been changes and progress
for women's rights, but women are still operating within these constraints.

The Awakening
Oil on Board, 2010
&
SelfPollution
OH on Board, 2010
I see my work as the power struggle women face in society: the visual
...embodiment of gender roles. "The Awakening• and "Self Pollution" play with
the idea of girls' growth towards woman~ood and the im~act of cultural
changes that surround the transformation. The Juxtaposition·of phaUic objects
surrounding the-female figure is threatening in nature and represents an
unseen mate presence. Using thtanalogy of 1950 feminine stereotypes, my
work represents modem day feminism, one whetethe problem with no name
is unseen and ignored yet is still present in the daily lives of women.
