Student senate meeting covers
hu~ger, LGBT visibility on campus

assembly on Thursday, Nov. 30, the
senators provided minutes from a
conference some of them had attended and welcomed two guest speakers
who discussed student hunger on
campus and LGBTQIA+ visibility.
Sharalle Arnold, the associate
director of the Gayle R. Davis Center for Women and Gender Equity
(CWGE), shared a report from the·
College and University Food Bank
Alliance, which found that one in
three students on college campuses
are hungry, compared to one in seven people in the U.S. as a whole.
The number of students who have
visited Replenish, the food pantry at
GVSU, has risen over the last couple
of years, Arnold said, necessitating a
larger space for the food bank. The
last academic year alone totaled more
than 900 visits. Access to affordable,
healthy food is crucial for student
success at GVSU, Arnold said.
"I really think it's important to urge
you all to consider the connection
between academic achievement and
adequate nutrition;' she said. "When
you're hungry, it's going to impede
your ability to engage in your education. The very fact that food is inaccessible to a large number of our students
undermines the very notion of why
we are here gathered in the academy,
which is to pursue an education:'
Arnold pointed out that manyfirstgeneration students, low-income students and students of color are not getting the nutrition they need. She asked
the senate to help Replenish expand
its food bank into a larger space. Its
current location, Kirkhof 0074, is not
large enough for the food and services
they would like to provide.
"I would ask you to consider the
disproportionate number of first-generation students, low-income students
and students of color that experience
hunger on this campus;' she said. "I
would ask you to consider, fan the
flames with me, get the conversation
going, offer the support that the ad-

one way to tackle hunger on
campus would be for GVSU
to offer the possibility of a
low- or no-cost meal plan
for eligible students.
"I would ask you to help
me as I am trying to fan the
flames around conversations
regarding low- or no-cost meal
plans for our self-eligible students:' she said. "I would ask
you to consider the high cost
of food on campus. Food is a
basic right. It should not be that
some families are prioritized
and some families have easier
access than others.

From there, Jen Hsu-Bishop, director of the Milton E.
Ford LGBT Resource Center,
shared the center's efforts to
make GVSU a welcoming place
for LGBTQIA+ students, especially in light of the violence
and hostility that some of these
students experience on campuses across the country.
Over the last l0years, GVSU
has grown in LGBTQIA+ visibility on campus by offering
scholarships to those engaged
in the LGBTQIA+ community,
facilitating programs and providing education, which in turn
make people in the community
feel they belong at GVSU.
"If you feel like you belong
here, if people want you to be
here and you can be your full
self, it makes it a lot easier to
be in the classroom and ask a
question about the math problem:' Hsu-Bishop said.
Hsu-Bishop said everyone
at GVSU plays a role in keeping the campus a welcoming
and safe environment for all
students, regardless of their
sexual or gender identity.
"We all have a role to
play;' she said. "Whether you
identify as straight or transgender or LGBTQIA+, we all
have an opportunity to say,
'Yeah, I'm a part of whether
this campus is welcoming, affirming and inclusive to the
folks around me, people I
care about, as well as myself."
Also at the general assembly, student senators who attended a conference at Oakland
University in mid-November
shared their notes from the day.
The conference was a gathering of student senators from
various universities to present
on their current projects. One
of the first points that senator
Rachel Jenkin shared was that
the conference made her realize that GVSU's student senate
is ahead of the pack.
"My take-home point
from the day was that I'm
incredibly proud of our body
and everything that we're doing:• Jenkin said. "In comparison to other universities,
we're just ahead of the game,
and we're happy to see that:'
With that said, Jenkin mentioned that some universities
have sexual-assault services in
place that she would like to see
replicated at GVSU.
"There are a couple of universities that have 24-hour
service for victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, things
like that, that they can ca11:• she
aid "They give them information about programs, ... things
of that nature, so that's what I'm
going to be working towards:'
Senators Julian VanDaele
and Cameron Jones discussed
the state funding that GVSU
receives in comparison toother universities. Senator Carly
Aller then brought up that
GVSU is better off than others schools in some ways. For
example, GVSU has a much
higher budget for student organizations than some other
universities have. Oakland
University has a $200,000
budget, for example, while
GVSU has a budget of more
than $2 million, she said.
The GVSU student senate
meets every Thursday at 4:30
p.m. in the Kirkhof Center
Pere Marquette Room.

'Wear the Rainbow'

In an effort to affirm the
varying gender identities of
students, the Grand Valley
State University Milton E.
Ford LGBT Resource Center
held its annual event 'Wear the
Rainbow: a Trans and Genderqueer Clothing Swap:
The yearly clothing swap,
held in Loosemore Auditorium on the Pew campus, was
held Monday, Nov. 7 and allotted students access to free
apparel for any gender identity. The event offered dressing rooms for people to try on
looks and maintain privacy.
This year, the center
worked in partnership with
the GVSU LGBT Alumni
Chapter to put on the event.
Officials in the center said
the event is important for
students who want to explore
and express their gender
identity, but may not be able
to purchase clothing based
on varying reasons.
"This clothing swap provides an affirmative space for
people to explore different expressions of gender presentation and to play with various
looks;' said Marla Wick, assistant director of the center. "This
provides needed access to items
that may otherwise be unavailable to people due to financial
burdens, personal safety concerns and other barriers:'
"Clothing swaps like this
are important because it allows
trans people to get clothes that
make them feel more comfortable within their bodies:' said
Ezra Smith, student worker in
the center. ''Also, since many
of us are young and broke, we
don't have to worry about affording the clothes:'
Moreover, Smith said community events like the clothing
swap can be a source of affirmation to transgender and gender
non-conforming students.
"These events are validating
because there's other people in
this space like you, which on
its own is validating;' he said.
''And there are also often people
there to validate us and help us
find ourselves through clothes:'
"Wear the Rainbow" also
serves as a means of celebrating the history of the LGBT
community and offering new
ways for people in the community to help one another.
The event has been a tradition for a least three years.
"Queer and trans communities have a long and rich
history of sharing resources,
and 'Wear the Rainbow' is an
extension of that tradition;'
Wick said. '"Wear the Rainbow' also seeks to be a celebra-

and help each other find clothing items and styles to express

Wick said the event is a
helpful resource for students
who face challenges shopping
for clothing in a traditional format, as presenting in public settings may prove to be challenging for transgender and gender
non-conforming students.
"Wear the Rainbow provides an opportunity for people to find free clothing and
accessories that align with
their gender identities:' Wick
said. "Shopping for clothing
can be a difficult and challenging process for transgender
people, and the clothing swap
offers an alternative to that:'

'WEAR TH RAINBOW' CLOTHING SWAP
The Milton E. Ford LGBT Resource Center at Grand
Valley State University invites students of all shapes,
sizes and genders to join them for a free clothing swap
and evening of workshops Monday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. in
the Loosemore Auditorium of the DeVos Center.
"Wear the Rainbow" offers a secure space for the
trans and queer community to easily access clothing
items and skills that align with their authentic selves.
Workshops include: binding, packing, make-up, walking
in heels and bowtie/ties.

'Queer the Air' hosts inclusive open
mic event

Aiming to affirm and support LGBT students at Grand Valley State
University, the Milton E. Ford LGBT Resource Center hosted "Queer
the Air" Monday, Oct. 10 as students shared experiences of personal
identity and embraced the arts.
Held once a semester in the LGBT Resource Center, students are
invited to read poetry and other spoken performance pieces. This
year, "Queer the Air" was held in honor of National Coming Out Day,
which celebrates the coming out process for LGBT people.
�“National Coming Out Day is a recognition and celebration of LGBT
identities and visibility," said Marla Wick, assistant director of the
center. "The idea of coming out, and of there being a closet that one
needs to 'come out' of, only makes sense because we are all
otherwise presumed to be straight and cisgender. LGBT people are in
all of our communities, and this day celebrates their presence and
importance in everyone's lives.
"(Queer the Air) gives students a platform to express themselves
creatively and authentically in a vibrant and supportive environment.”
This event, along with other organizations in relation to the LGBT
Resource Center, creates a strong sense of community between the
performers and observers. Wick said marginalized voices are allowed
to be heard in a safe space.
“This event definitely provides a form of community for LGBT
students,” Wick said. “Students who perform or participate in this
event as audience members get to appreciate not only the amazing
amount of talent and creativity in their community, but also the
wonderfully tangible way these students support each other.
"We get some food and really encourage a creative and warm
community environment focused on self-expression and validation.”
Ezra Smith, student worker in the LGBT Resource Center, said public
events like "Queer the Air" allow for a broader audience other than
only students who frequent the center.
“It definitely brings out a lot of people we don’t see on a daily basis,
especially with us being queer, our community can be very small
because not many folks are out,” Smith said. “It’s not just the open mic
aspect of it, but even when we’re all just sitting down and listening,
we’re reacting, watching other people react and bonding over those
moments.”
�Alongside events like "Queer the Air," the LGBT Resource Center
offers a myriad of services to the community, as well as those who are
not affiliated with GVSU but are interested in the materials the center
provides.
“We provide support to students, faculty and staff on campus as well
as community members who contact us for resources, education or
referrals. We offer a safer space on campus for students to gather and
be in community with one another, and support a number of student
groups,” Wick said.
Additionally, Wick said the center focuses on outreach and training
across the campus and West Michigan community as an effort toward
improving the cultural climate for LGBT people.

LGBT Youth Group at the
Grand Rapids Pride Center. In
his position, he educated the
youth on the laws and statistics
of Gender and Sexuality Alliances in their schools to empower them to create ~hange.
This year, Carter will work
with the LGBT Resource
Center facilitating First Year
Queer Alliance (FQA) and
Loud and Queer (L&Q),
which are programs offered
to students on a weekly basis.
In addition, Carter plans to
focus on updating the cen..:

who died in December. Feentstra retired from
Grand Valley in 2012 thE:!n returned in 2014 to
serve as adjunct manager for the Sustainable
Agriculture Project. Feenstra's wife and four
daughters attended the ceremony.
"Austin wonderfully exemplifies Dave's - - leadership, vision, determined spirit, and caring
heart. Like Dave, he is destined to leave a
legacy at Grand Valley for years to come," said
Anne Hiskes, dean of the Brooks College of
Interdisciplinary Stud ies .

Grand Valley's Milton E. Ford LGBT Resource
Center hosted the Prid e Awards March 30 to
celebrate and honor those who made a positive
impact on the LGBT commu nity thi s acade mic
year.
The fourth annual event took place in Kirkhof
Center and featured student performances,
including spoken poetry and singing.
Award recipients:

Harn, assistant for the Padnos International
Center; Monica Johnstone, director of
communications and advancement for the
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

At the event, Johnstone presented the
Milt Quilt to the center. She said the quilt was
made by hand by many allies. The project was
inspired by Ford's "dance floor model" of the
intersectionality of the LGBT community.
"Milt had a vision for helping people
understand complexity without being afraid
of it," Johnstone said. " His model was wiggly
and hand-drawn with colored pencils, and it
frustrated him that it was only two-dimensional.
I hope he'd like that we brought it into a third
dimension in his honor."

Because of this frightening trend, Watt, along with

only combat stigma, but
misinformation as well. The
two usually come together,
though on GVSU's campus,
students have taken a broader
approach to HIV and AIDS.

about HIV and AIDS have

"Our role is to educate
people on campus about things
they just don't know about or
things that they've been taught

just want to broaden a knowledge ba e without saying 'this is
what you should believe~'
Because students have
been educated about HIV and
AID differently, there's no
universal approach to further
educating them now. Scanlon
hopes that through hearing
Watt speak about his experiences working with those affected by AIDS and through
social media awareness, efforts to end the stigma and
successfully fight the epidemic can be more successful.
"Unfortunately, it sometimes happens that people don't
talk about it unless it's personally impacting them:' she said.

have to do this work anymore.

Unsafe for the holidays

While countless students
at Grand Valley State University are looking forward to
holiday break and time with
family away from school,
many students who identify
within the LGBT community
are hesitant to return to their
childhood home.
For students who identify
in the community, the holiday

to their hometowns and spending time with their families.

are feeling scared and alone

make it hard for thriving communities, such
as the LGBT, to gain full
support and acceptance. In an effort to
change that dynamic, members and
staff of Grand Valley State University's
LGBT Resource Center have made it
their mission to ensure members will
always have a place where they can feel
a sense of belonging. Such a milestone
as a newly-established alumni chapter
makes this more than possible.
Just weeks ago, the Alumni Association Board approved the LGBT's
application to create an official alumni
chapter in hopes of ensuring that even
after graduation, students will have a
support network to rely on.
"For me personally, it is the desire
to connect other Lakers in helping
support the LGBT Resource Center
to create literal and figurative space
on campus and in the community
for people to live authentic lives:• said
LGBT Resource Center Secretary and
Treasurer, Tony Josephson.
To attract and increase chapter
participation, social events and networking opportunities will make an
appearance between the months of
October and December to help raise
awareness among current and future
alumni within the LGBT community.
In 2015, the center will sponsor and
host guest speakers from local businesses and non-profit organizations to
speak and meet with students.
For Colette Seguin Beighley, director of the LGBT Resource Center,
the addition of an alumni chapter
will help secure and maintain connections for LGBT members.
"We are so thrilled to be a part
of the development of a new LGBT
alumni chapter:• Seguin Beighley
said. "Our alumni each have unique
stories and are committed to helping
make Grand Valley an inclusive and
supportive place for our LGBT students, staff and faculty:'
Spreading support is one of the underlying goals of the LGBT Resource
Center, as a college environment can
deem stressful for those struggling to
discover themselves as well as accepting others for their differences.
"I remember very clearly what it
was like being different from almost
everyone else and not being able to
be myself,' said Paul Cook, president
of the alumni chapter. "The LGBT Resource Center, our Alumni Chapter
and other similar groups can provide
people with a safe place, a sense ofbe-

Their mission, "to educate, support
and empower students to lead authentic lives, to challenge systems of gender
and sexuality, and to work for social
justice:• aims to promote a sense of
well-being and comfort for those who
are a part of the LGBT community.
As the resource center continues
to develop a strong presence throughout GVSU, members of the LGBT
Alumni Association only hope to see
an increase in members to maintain
such a supportive network.
"We are a fledgling chapter, but
our mission is to closely integrate
the outside professional resources of
our membership to bring real world
speakers into the academic setting to
bridge the gap between academia, personal and professional lives to students
while helping alumni stay actively engaged with the university and LGBT
Resource Center:• Josephson said.
