(0:50) Why John started the Foundation. Emerged out of a mid-life crisis. Felt he
was missing something spiritual. Took a course of action. Shared three Hindu
principles that led him to the path
(3:42) How John narrowed down the focus of the Foundation. Decided to focus
on kids
(5:20) Keeps the (?) for grantmaking, decide to meet the needs to children
whatever they may be
(6:23) Why start the foundation instead of supporting other organizations that
are in the principles they value

community and doing this work

fights, had to go to court

go to the conference

his spiritual understanding of and relation to love
(3:45) Nepo talks about his work at Fetzer, trying to incorporate story telling into
the work and curriculum of the Fetzer Foundation. Program called Generosity of
Spirit”
(5:00) Recounts a Hindi teaching story called “The Drum” in which a boy learns
about generosity and giving. A series of giving encounters
(10:30) Talks about how stories can figure into modern culture. Difference
between out understanding “Indian Giver” as a derogatory term
(14:00) Recounts an experience when a Catholic woman gave him a relic, to
combat cancer, he eventually gave it back to her when she was sick

(1:02) David discusses the Detroit Riverfront Project and remembers Detroit that he
grew up in. remembers the vitality of downtown Detroit. The he discusses the decline of
the downtown area. He gives a brief history of the Detroit Riverfront Project and some
other revitalization projects
(9:45) Page and Noland discuss Kresge’s involvement in making the Riverfront Project
happen and about philanthropy in Southeastern Michigan and how that project changed
the course of philanthropy in the region. Step by step on the Riverfront Project
(17:32) Noland talks more about the Riverfront Project. Kresge gave $50 million with
strict stipulations. Page breaks down the cost of building, running and endowing the
project. Cost $300 million, must raise $140 million, already have $87 million. List
corporations/foundations that have contributed to the Project. Talk about the vision of
Riverfront Project.
(23:46) Noland says most of river walk will be completed by next summer, will complete
what it set out to do. Relays important leaders in philanthropy and community, civic
leaders in making this project happen. Talk of strict dealings in completing the project

came to the club
(2:47) Rotary Club was looking for an attorney to handle the discovering of the oil-gas
on camp in 1976, Patrick was faced with the legal issues of the Rotary Club not filing
exceptions
(6:42) Al Arnold and Rotary Club board had negotiations for royalty interests
(9:07) Tom Power who is now a circuit court judge helped brainstorm the structure of a
new organization- restructuring- Rotary Charities and Rotary Camps
(15:19) Debates laid groundwork for the philanthropy of the club
(17:17) Talk about the tax exempt organization in a unique way- civic league like Rotary
club who were not fully exempt were able to apply under special revenue ruling
(20:09) Discuss the pay-out requirement for private foundations
(21:09) Key players for philanthropy and rotary, Frank Power- president of Rotary
Camps. Franks and his wife pushed for acquiring the Girl Scout property. Bill McCourt
took over as secretary and implemented a bookkeeping system
