I’d like to give you an idea of what I’ll share with you today in our short time together. 2 �3 �4 �5 �6 �7 �8 �9 �10 �11 �12 �13 �14 �15 �16 �17 �18 �19 �CMA sustains and grows volunteerism through work in four primary areas: Volunteerism – All our partners have volunteerism at the center of everything they do. Our programs get everyone from young people to senior citizens involved in volunteering in their communities to instill an ethic of service and address local problems and needs. For example, Volunteer Centers of Michigan offers a wealth of volunteer opportunities through its support and promotion of local volunteer centers. The Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC) provides many volunteer opportunities through its Adopt-A-Highway program and its work with national programs like AmeriCorps and Vista. CMA administers the America’s Promise/Michigan’s Promise by promoting volunteer opportunities for citizens interested in providing the five promises to Michigan’s youth. Grantmaking – CMA partners promote volunteerism through grants that help support volunteer programs. For example, MCSC grants over $1 million annually through its Volunteer Investment grants and acts as the conduit for federal funds. The Michigan Campus Compact (MCC) also awards grants to new projects on college and university campuses two times each school year. Additionally, it provides funding through the Student Community Action Fund 20 �and the Campus Dialogue Grants. Training and Technical Assistance – Our partners offer training and technical assistance so that volunteers have the skills they need to maximize their involvement. A prime example of that are the workshops that the Volunteer Centers of Michigan (VCM) hold for volunteer center managers on best practices in running their centers, recruiting and using volunteers, using technology and so forth. The Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA) has several training and knowledge opportunities, including the Local Learning Series which is designed for people who work for non-profit organizations and need to learn more about technology, finances, working with the media, etc. MCC provides training and technical assistance through a Teacher-Education Institute and the annual Institute on Academic Service-Learning, as well as providing professional development opportunities for faculty and staff. Last, but not least, America’s Promise/Michigan’s Promise provides training to local promise sites through the national initiative, as well as providing best practice sharing opportunities. Service-Learning – In this area, the MCC promotes the education and commitment of Michigan college students to be civically engaged citizens by creating and expanding academic, co-curricular and campus-wide opportunities for community service. In addition, the MCSC administers Learn and Serve grants. I’ve listed just a few of our programs as examples of what we do. For a comprehensive look, visit our website at www.connectmichiganalliance.org. 20 �21 �So…what does all this mean? What good is it? We can point to six primary benefits of the work we do. First, by coming together in this innovative partnership, we have much better sense of the areas we are currently serving and where there is overlap. We also can see the gaps better, so we know what areas need to be served. This enables us recruit volunteers where they are needed and put them to better use. Second, our training programs help volunteers become more effective, too. With better skills, their time and effort makes more of a positive impact in their communities. And because they do a better job in areas of where real needs have been identified, their volunteer work is more rewarding for them personally. So it’s a double positive. Third, we can do much more in partnership than we can individually. By collaborating, we have increased our knowledge base considerably because we share what we know with each other. By collaborating, we also can help each other keep the big picture in mind, not just our little piece of it. These are just 22 �two benefits of collaboration which increases our capacity to fulfill our mission and reach our goals. Fourth, we save staff time and resources by eliminating duplication of effort and money spent. This increases our productivity, so we can do more with less. We also share staff, office space, equipment and supplies which saves money. And, more importantly, we work together to secure grants, rather than compete against each other like we used to. Fifth, sharing knowledge means not only learning best practices from each other – which we do – but it gives us a better understanding of where community needs are from a total perspective, not just from one partner’s. Again, that helps us be more efficient and effective. Last, we are able to transfer what we do in Lansing at CMA into your community. CMA is a unique organization that we believe will serve as a model for how non-profit organizations can collaborate, connect and increase their capacity to help improve the quality of life of many people. I’d like to give you an idea of what I’ll share with you today in our short time together. Read through the slide. 2 �CMA’s reason for being is volunteerism and our mission reflects that. Read the mission. We believe that through volunteerism we can build, strengthen and invest in Michigan’s communities and their people, making Michigan a better place to live. 3 �Since volunteerism is at the core of everything we do, let’s talk for a few minutes about its importance not only to Michigan’s communities, but to each of you. Volunteerism is simply the act of giving our time and talents. That simple act of giving – your special skills, your listening ear, your helping hand, your time – reaps many rewards for others…and yourself. Read the list and give at least one example that will bring one of the bullets to life. 4 �Our purpose follows from our mission: We work to sustain and grow volunteerism. Ever since Governor George Romney stated that the solution to our problems is not government but volunteerism, Michigan has been known and respected for its outstanding volunteer ethic. It’s one of Governor Romney’s legacies and a hallmark of our state. CMA strives to make sure that volunteerism continues to be one of the characteristics that describes Michigan and its people. CMA is a one-of-a-kind partnership of four organizations that are all in the business of supporting and promoting volunteerism. It is an innovative arrangement that can be shown best by a circle. The circle shows how we connect with each other and with CMA. 5 �The Michigan Nonprofit Association is the collective voice of Michigan’s nonprofit organizations, providing member services and advocacy. The Michigan Community Service Commission is a state grant-making agency that supports volunteer efforts through state and federal funding programs. Volunteer Centers of Michigan supports local volunteer centers as they solve community problems through volunteerism. Michigan Campus Compact strives to instill an ethic of service and civic action in college students. This is a powerful partnership where the collaboration, knowledge sharing and synergy of being together increases the capacity of each organization – and CMA – much beyond what each could do separately. Give an example. CMA successfully built a $20 million endowment to fund, sustain and grow community-based and statewide volunteer efforts. This ensures the stability and security of volunteer programs in Michigan, regardless of the whims of the economy and other factors that are beyond each of our partners’ control. CMA is itself a model for the nonprofit community of how creative and collaborative 6 �approaches can prevent duplication, promote collaboration, increase capacity and make it easier for people to access services. In effect, CMA offers “one stop shopping” for volunteers and volunteer organizations. 6 �CMA sustains and grows volunteerism through work in four primary areas: Volunteerism – All our partners have volunteerism at the center of everything they do. Our programs get everyone from young people to senior citizens involved in volunteering in their communities to instill an ethic of service and address local problems and needs. For example, Volunteer Centers of Michigan offers a wealth of volunteer opportunities through its support and promotion of local volunteer centers. The Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC) provides many volunteer opportunities through its Adopt-A-Highway program and its work with national programs like AmeriCorps and Vista. CMA administers the America’s Promise/Michigan’s Promise by promoting volunteer opportunities for citizens interested in providing the five promises to Michigan’s youth. Grantmaking – CMA partners promote volunteerism through grants that help support volunteer programs. For example, MCSC grants over $1 million annually through its Volunteer Investment grants and acts as the conduit for federal funds. The Michigan Campus Compact (MCC) also awards grants to new projects on college and university campuses two times each school year. Additionally, it provides funding through the Student Community Action Fund 7 �and the Campus Dialogue Grants. Training and Technical Assistance – Our partners offer training and technical assistance so that volunteers have the skills they need to maximize their involvement. A prime example of that are the workshops that the Volunteer Centers of Michigan (VCM) hold for volunteer center managers on best practices in running their centers, recruiting and using volunteers, using technology and so forth. The Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA) has several training and knowledge opportunities, including the Local Learning Series which is designed for people who work for non-profit organizations and need to learn more about technology, finances, working with the media, etc. MCC provides training and technical assistance through a Teacher-Education Institute and the annual Institute on Academic Service-Learning, as well as providing professional development opportunities for faculty and staff. Last, but not least, America’s Promise/Michigan’s Promise provides training to local promise sites through the national initiative, as well as providing best practice sharing opportunities. Service-Learning – In this area, the MCC promotes the education and commitment of Michigan college students to be civically engaged citizens by creating and expanding academic, co-curricular and campus-wide opportunities for community service. In addition, the MCSC administers Learn and Serve grants. I’ve listed just a few of our programs as examples of what we do. For a comprehensive look, visit our website at www.connectmichiganalliance.org. 7 �So…what does all this mean? What good is it? We can point to six primary benefits of the work we do. First, by coming together in this innovative partnership, we have much better sense of the areas we are currently serving and where there is overlap. We also can see the gaps better, so we know what areas need to be served. This enables us recruit volunteers where they are needed and put them to better use. Second, our training programs help volunteers become more effective, too. With better skills, their time and effort makes more of a positive impact in their communities. And because they do a better job in areas of where real needs have been identified, their volunteer work is more rewarding for them personally. So it’s a double positive. Third, we can do much more in partnership than we can individually. By collaborating, we have increased our knowledge base considerably because we share what we know with each other. By collaborating, we also can help each other keep the big picture in mind, not just our little piece of it. These are just 8 �two benefits of collaboration which increases our capacity to fulfill our mission and reach our goals. Fourth, we save staff time and resources by eliminating duplication of effort and money spent. This increases our productivity, so we can do more with less. We also share staff, office space, equipment and supplies which saves money. And, more importantly, we work together to secure grants, rather than compete against each other like we used to. Fifth, sharing knowledge means not only learning best practices from each other – which we do – but it gives us a better understanding of where community needs are from a total perspective, not just from one partner’s. Again, that helps us be more efficient and effective. Last, we are able to transfer what we do in Lansing at CMA into your community. We have a model to offer you of how collaboration and working together can be a better way. 8 �How can you become involved in CMA? Become a volunteer and make it a core value in your own life. Volunteering is a gift to others…and yourself. Help us reach others by spreading the word about CMA. Invite us to speak to your organization or at one of your conferences. I’ve been struck by the utter and complete destruction and the simultaneous burning urge to do something. I’ve not had these feelings since September 11th, 2001. Then, I and many others in the volunteer community discussed working harder to make our communities safer, healthier and stronger through an even greater volunteer infrastructure. We also looked into how to encourage the giving of the most needed resource at the most appropriate time. Katrina provides these same challenges. Currently, the efforts are focused on rescues of the stranded and impaired. The Campaign will connect the idealism and activism of children with the immediate and long-term needs and priorities of those on the frontlines helping the people and places devastated by the tsunamis. The Quarters From Kids Coalition is made up of more than 39 organizations (and the list is growing daily) including educators, service organizations, and social entrepreneurs that collectively work with more than 10 million children across America. The goal of this historic nationwide campaign by America’s kids is relieve suffering, prevent further loss of life, and improve the long-term prospects of children and adults affected by the Tsunami in South and Southeast Asia. The strategy is to involve every one of America’s kids and youth (and adults who work with them) to raise millions to support the urgent humanitarian need and the long-term redevelopment needs in all countries hit by the Tsunami. There are very specific, concrete roles for anyone who wishes to join this broad and inclusive coalition to help achieve that goal. Roles are described below for children and youth, college students, educators and others who work with young people, parents, corporations (including banks, retail stores, high-tech companies and others), non-profit organizations, social entrepreneurs, and the wide array of highly respected relief and redevelopment organizations who will get and use these funds to help those in urgent need in South and Southeast Asia. This campaign is reaching out to children to give them a vehicle to collectively use their power, generosity, and leadership to help those affected by raising money, quarter by quarter (or dollar by dollar, nickel by nickle, etc.), by becoming educated about the impact of the tsunami on children in South and Southeast Asia, and by sharing stories about the power and impact of our children’s actions and generosity. The results are available on the Committee’s website (http://appropriations.house.gov/_files/LHSCMark.pdf). Overall, the numbers are $7 million less than what was recommended by the President and $13 million lower than last year. Given the tough budget battle, this is a good start. Next, the full House Appropriations Committee will craft their bill and send it to the full membership sometime in July. In anticipation of the difficult budget process that the Congress will grapple with over the summer, leaders in the national service field in Michigan are today sending a letter to the Congressional Delegation from our state to call for full funding for programs administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service (see attached). This letter was endorsed by XXX Michiganians representing nonprofits, schools, foundations, businesses and concerned individuals who support national service. We ask that you and your colleagues in the U.S. Congress consider and support our recommendations for National Service funding. The Corporation is an independent federal agency that provided $22.3 million in funding to Michigan last year. Those funds leveraged more than 76,000 volunteer participants and over 120 program sites, projects and grantees. These volunteers serve in national service programs that include Learn and Serve America, Senior Corps, AmeriCorps State and National, and AmeriCorps Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA). A brief profile of National Service funding and local sites in Michigan is attached for your review (or you can view it online at www.cns.gov/state_profiles/). In Michigan, funding from the Corporation is administered through the Corporation’s Michigan Office in Detroit and the Michigan Community Service Commission—a state agency based in Lansing and appointed by Governor Granholm. These organizations work cooperatively to get national service participants to local nonprofits including volunteer centers, human service agencies, schools and higher education institutions that in turn recruit and coordinate other volunteers to address local needs. Volunteers in National Service work on critical community issues including poverty, education, housing, public safety, the environment, homeland security and other human needs. All over Michigan and across America, the Corporation’s programs support President Bush’s Call to Service and his goal for every person in America to dedicate at least two years or 4,000 hours during their lifetime to the service of others. Since its creation in 1993, the Corporation has worked with Congress to take strong and bold steps toward innovation and reform. AmeriCorps, Senior Corps and Learn and Serve America programs were some of the first to work with faith-based organizations, on homeland security initiatives and in engaging the Baby Boomer generation in volunteerism. More recently, the President has installed a new leadership team and the Corporation has embarked on a rulemaking process that will impact every aspect of the organization’s activities. Now the Corporation’s programs are working even harder to meet the increasing demand of our nation’s communities. Below is a description of these high impact initiatives. AmeriCorps State and National is a network of state commissions and nonprofit organizations that utilize service as a strategy to meet community needs. More than 1,200 members serve in 71 program sites across Michigan, leveraging more than $3.9 million in education awards and millions more in public and private sector resources. The Michigan Community Service Commission distributes and monitors 59% of the grants to AmeriCorps programs in Michigan. Local communities identify their needs, choose the model that can best address their needs, and compete with other local organizations for national service funding through the Commission and State Office to support their programs. AmeriCorps, like all programs administered by the Corporation, is grassroots driven and facilitated by the state and federal levels. AmeriCorps members completing a year of service are eligible for an education award worth $4,725 that can �be used to pay educational costs at qualified advanced education institutions. Education Awards are administered through the National Service Trust to guarantee availability. Michigan is engaging 1,290 AmeriCorps members. They are part of the 75,000 members serving across the country who are helping to recruit, engage and train more than 600,000 community volunteers to directly serve more than 2 million children and youth. For FY 2006, we support $442 million for AmeriCorps grants to state programs and national nonprofits, which operate sites in Michigan. In addition, we support funding the National Service Trust equal to the funding level requested by the President for FY 2005. This would empower the Corporation to continue to effectively recruit 75,000 AmeriCorps members for 2006. AmeriCorps NCCC and AmeriCorps*VISTA work on project based needs and the needs of the poor respectively. These are valuable components to the AmeriCorps network. We support $25.5 million for AmeriCorps NCCC and $94.6 million for AmeriCorps*VISTA which will help ensure that Michigan is able to continue leveraging 180 members and $2.6 million in national service support for our communities. Senior Corps, a vital element of the national service family, is comprised of three strong and unique programs—Foster Grandparents Program, Senior Companion Programs and Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). These programs harness the experience, skills and talents of our older citizens and focus their passions for service toward working with other seniors, children and a myriad of other citizens. We support an appropriation of $65 million for RSVP to support the program including $4.3 million to increase recruitment and programming and $2.16 million for Programs of National Significances as identified by Congress. For the Foster Grandparent Program we recommend $116.5 million to include $1.7 million for Programs of National Significance expansion and $3.4 million to support and improve quality programming in the field. We support an appropriation of $51.9 million for the Senior Companion Program to fund Programs of National Significance which includes $4 million to ensure tighter adherence to federal policies, a small increase for program volunteers and the expansion of programming to the field. Learn and Serve America is a competitive grant program for K-12 schools, colleges and universities, and community and faith-based organizations to integrate community service with academic study. The service-learning approach to education improves learning, teaches civic responsibility, and strengthens communities. The funding supports the development or replication of innovative programs, teacher training, research, and volunteer management. Unfortunately, funding for the program has stagnated or shrunk over the past decade while the demand, denoted by the increasing number of participants, has grown. We support providing $46 million for Learn and Serve America in FY 2006, including an additional $2 million for teacher training. In addition, we support the addition of $1 million to support thorough, scientifically-based service-learning research. This would also ensure that the $1 million in Michigan Learn and Serve America funding may be maintained and possibly grow next year to support our 62,000 participants. All of these highly effective and valuable programs are making a difference in the lives of thousands of Michigan citizens. They engage the young and young at heart in service to communities. Through our strong network of Volunteer Centers, Campus Compact schools and Communities of Promise Michigan, we are leveraging national service to make a difference in communities. BACKGROUND This will be the first individual meeting Mr. Lore will have had with these leaders of the CMA Campaign since his taking on the post as CEO of CMA. Mr. Lore has been working to make contact with the tri-chairs of the CMA Campaign. Last month he had a very productive meeting with Wm. Richardson of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. In various meetings with other CMA Campaign volunteers, he has both provided and update and gathered valuable information to incorporate in the overall prospects plan. We have closed the official "ask phase" of the Volunteer Centers of Michigan and Michigan Campus Compact Divisions . There will be a letter sent shortly to formally announce this to VCM Directors and MCC Presidents. Gifts will always be accepted from "family members", however, as we move into our Corporate Strategy, there will be less attention placed on th is phase. Attached you will find a copy of the VCM and MCC reports as they currently stand . Should any major change occur within this division , we will inform you . The Campaign Leadership staff recently met to determine the best approach for our Tier II Corporate Strategy. Lore John Lore began his career in the not for profit sector in 1966, when he was appointed Director of Alumni and Development at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. In 1972, he became the Vice President for Development and Planning at Nazareth College in Kalamazoo. He began his doctoral residency and completed his doctoral dissertation in 1974. During his residency, Lore was a W.K. Kellogg Foundation Intern. After completing his doctoral degree, he returned to Nazareth College as President from 1975 through 1980. In 1980, he was appointed President of the Michigan Colleges Foundation in Detroit. In June 1986, Lore was appointed Senior Vice President of St. John Health System, the largest of the four Regional Systems of the Sisters of St. Joseph Health System. In October 1993, Lore assumed responsibilities as President and Chief Executive Officer of the parent corporation, the Sisters of St. Joseph Health System in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In 1999, the Daughters of Charity National Health System and the Sisters of St. Joseph Health System joined ministries to create one of the nation's largest health systems with over 85,000 employees in 15 states and the District of Columbia. As one of the creators of Ascension Health, Lore was appointed Executive Vice President of System Development and Senior Vice President of the Great Lakes Division. In September 2001, Lore was appointed as the Founding President and Chief Executive Officer of Connect Michigan Alliance in Lansing. The Alliance is an uniquely funded public/private partnership formed to provide a cohesive network of support systems to build and strengthen communities throughout Michigan, working to solve local issues through volunteerism. Lore has served the State of Michigan through appointed positions under three Governors; William G. Milliken, James J. Blanchard, and John Engler.
