Organizations that fail to address them limit their success in terms of reaching their goals. How many exist within your MNA? 1. "If we need a million dollars, all we need to do is get 1,000 people to give us $1,000 each." Creating "grass-roots" campaigns will usually only work in projects where there are a pre-determined number of prospects - memberships, churches, etc. In most community campaigns, the concept of equal sacrifice (wealthier people give more than less wealthier people) must be used to insure reaching goals. 2. "There is no way 'Mr. Smith' will make a gift to this campaign ... he doesn't give!" There is a tendency to assume certain prospects won't give, but a true campaign builds the campaign atmosphere and leadership confidence necessary to have a reasonable expectation most people who are asked, correctly, will give. Outside counsel should base decisions on capability ... and then determine willingness. 3. "Let's do the first part, and then see how that goes before we decide how to do the rest of it." A key to virtually every campaign is a comprehensive, yet flexible, campaign plan that shows the path to reaching a pre-determined goal. Unless an organization has a blueprint for success a campaign really can't succeed. 4. "There is no way I can ask anyone for that much money." Major gifts are critical to a campaign's success. Many people, and companies, are committed to making their community a better place by making what are, to many people, an extraordinary gift. If you don't ask for a major gift, most prospects will never think to make one. Remember, 80% of the funds you raise will come from 20% of your donors. This is true in virtually every successful campaign. Proper training by experienced counsel can ensure that gift levels are at a maximum and the solicitation is conducted properly. 5. "I'm donating my time, I shouldn't have to make a sacrificial, or any other type of, gift." If the very people closest to the organization- the ones who should be most committed - don't make gifts, then why would anyone else? Board members in particular are important. Even if no single individual can make a major gift, often times the Board of Directors as a group can make the leadership gift. 6. "This campaign will last until its finished ... even if it takes years!" �A solid timetable, with built-in "mini-goals", is cmcial in order to keep a campaign moving. Built in "pressure points" will help create faster decisions from prospects and keep leaders focused on the campaign. Most importantly it will avoid the campaign "dragging on". 7. "We raise a lot of money every year, we can easily do a capital campaign." Capital campaigns are different. You are asking people to buy into your vision, not just your immediate goals. You are asking them to make multi-year commitments to your cause and that requires a special level of commitment. Often times it is harder for donors to see the need for bricks and mortarespecially if your normal fund raising is centered on social services needs. 8. "We can save a lot of money by "piggybacking" on our current development efforts." Campaigns are different. A unique theme, materials, style and plan must accommodate these differences. The campaign must become the focus of the organization's efforts. 9. "We have to get a lot of publicity. Once people know why we need this money, people will gladly give." Actually, news articles and television reports are not extremely helpful in raising money. People are inundated with emotional appeals and are not generally moved to make major gifts because of press accounts. Newsletters and personal letters are most effective in reminding already solicited prospects they need to make a decision. Publicity must be a part of the overall campaign plan and is not a substitute for good planning and implementation. 10. "Fund raising counsel is too expensive. Our own staff can do it and we have a couple of board members who have been chairpersons of some other campaigns. Campaigns managed by counsel usually raise more money than campaigns mn without counsel. For the most part, counsel-driven campaigns take less time, use leaders more effectively and the total cost (expenses plus fees) is usually less than 10-15% of the funds pledged. Experienced staff is helpful, but can they do their normal responsibilities and conduct a major campaign? Experienced fund raising volunteers are important but no substitute for the efforts of an experienced manager to make sure a solid campaign plan is in place and executed. Through a $20 million endowment, CMA is uniting the combined forces of its founding partners to permanently sustain and expand the "volunteer infrastructure" for which Michigan is known and heralded. All of the partners of this initiative have developed innovative approaches to working effectively on a statewide level with varied constituencies in ways that serve as national models. Once the campaign is complete, CMA will have the capacity to fully advance upon achieving its goal of providing avenues for every Michigan citizen to serve their community through volunteer service and civic action. This goal will be met in local communities throughout Michigan by: • • • • • • Providing increased access to training and technical assistance necessary to build the capacity of local nonprofits to meet their communities' most pressing social, charitable, economic, cultural, educational, faith-based, and civic needs; Providing access to a strong and healthy Volunteer Center for every resident; Increasing grant opportunities for Volunteer Centers to engage more citizens in volunteerism and service; Increasing grant opportunities for service-learning programs to engage more young people in service; Maximizing state and federal government resources to empower local communities to address their local challenges; and Increasing the understanding and use of service-learning in the work of community-based nonprofits, K-12 schools and higher education institutions. CMA programs and services address four areas of need, which were identified through a two-year planning process that engaged more than seventy executives representing local nonprofit organizations. Those areas include Youth Volunteerism, Community Volunteerism, Higher Education, and Training and Technical Assistance. More than seventy local nonprofit leaders from communities throughout Michigan participated in a two-year planning process. Their charge was to create a vision for their local communities by drawing upon their common experiences �Dr. Robert Long Page 3 March 1,2002 in the development of a statewide strategic plan that would have significant impact and relevance at the local level. In their deliberations, planners considered the following facts: Overall Significance of Michigan's Volunteers • Almost 90 percent of all charitable organizations, participating in Public Sector Consultants' (PSC) 1997 survey, rely on volunteers. Charitable organizations indicated they averaged 180 volunteers and nearly 9,500 volunteer hours, which translates to 4.6 full-time workers per organization. PSC estimates that more than 1 million volunteers contribute nearly 60 million hours to Michigan nonprofit organizations, an equivalent of more than 28,000 full-time employees and nearly $760 million in donated labor. • According to Michigan Giving & Volunteering, a 1999 statewide report published jointly by the Council of Michigan Foundations and the Michigan Nonprofit Association, 46.7 percent of Michigan adults volunteered during the past twelve months - the majority indicating they are volunteering more hours annually than in the past. • Michigan Giving & Volunteering also revealed that 81.3 percent of those who did not volunteer in 1999 indicated they had not been asked to do so over half said they had been volunteers in the past. Changing Dynamics and Capacity Challenges in Supporting Volunteerism and Service-Learning • As a requirement for graduation, many school districts and institutions of higher education are mandating students complete a set number of hours of volunteer service annually. While the intent is to civically engage young people in a meaningful experience, the need for formal training available to nonprofit organizations, to the schools and to youth far exceeds its availability. • The percentage of students engaged in service-learning through institutions of higher education has annually increased at a double-digit pace over the past several years. Over 17 million hours of service were contributed by undergraduates nation wide. As this trend continues, institutions of higher education will require expanded support services such as those provided by CMA to ensure the quality of service-learning programs. • Michigan corporations are experiencing a growing need to engage in local initiatives to improve the quality of life in the communities in which they are located. Increasingly, communities are looking to their corporate citizens to provide human resources - board members and volunteers - in �Dr. Robert Long Page 4 March 1,2002 support of community projects. Both corporations and nonprofit organizations are experiencing challenges in terms of their organizational capacities to effectively manage, maintain and support this community resource. • Family volunteerism is a growing trend as many families are looking for opportunities to spend quality time together in service to their communities. With the demand for quality family volunteer experiences increasing, local nonprofit organizations need specialized training and technical assistance to effectively serve this constituency. The ConnectMichigan Alliance endowment was created to provide resources for innovative grantmaking, program development, and operational costs. On an annual basis, the endowment allows the organization to sustain current initiatives and focus on the development of new programs. Though the endowment earnings will be significant, it is anticipated that the CMA will continue to fundraise on a limited basis. New dollars that CMA will seek on a limited basis will support new program development versus operational costs. CMA will rely on the endowment earnings, program fees, corporate sponsorships and fees for service for revenue generation. It is not anticipated that CMA will seek funding through membership or annual campaigns. Through a $20 million endowment, CMA is uniting the combined forces of its founding partners to permanently sustain and expand the "volunteer infrastructure" for which Michigan is known and heralded. All of the partners of this initiative have developed innovative approaches to working effectively on a statewide level with varied constituencies in ways that serve as national models. Once the campaign is complete, CMA will have the capacity to folly advance upon achieving its goal of providing avenues for every Michigan citizen to serve their community through volunteer service and civic action. This goal will be met in local communities throughout Michigan by: • Providing increased access to training and technical assistance necessary to build the capacity of local nonprofits to meet their communities' most pressing social, charitable, economic, cultural, educational, faith-based, and civic needs; • Providing access to a strong and healthy Volunteer Center for every resident; • Increasing grant opportunities for Volunteer Centers to engage more citizens in volunteerism and service; • Increasing grant opportunities for service-learning programs to engage more young people in service; • Maximizing state and federal government resources to empower local communities to address their local challenges; and • Increasing the understanding and use of service-learning in the work of community-based nonprofits, K-12 schools and higher education institutions. CMA programs and services address four areas of need, which were identified through a two-year planning process that engaged more than seventy executives representing local nonprofit organizations. Those areas include Youth Volunteerism, Community Volunteerism, Higher Education, and Training and Technical Assistance. More than seventy local nonprofit leaders from communities throughout Michigan participated in a two-year planning process. Their charge was to create a vision for their local communities by drawing upon their common experiences �Mr. Elan Garonzik Page 3 March 7, 2002 in the development of a statewide strategic plan that would have significant impact and relevance at the local level. In their deliberations, planners considered the following facts: Overall Significance of Michigan's Volunteers • Almost 90 percent of all charitable organizations, participating in Public Sector Consultants' (PSC) 1997 survey, rely on volunteers. Charitable organizations indicated they averaged 180 volunteers and nearly 9,500 volunteer hours, which translates to 4.6 full-time workers per organization. PSC estimates that more than 1 million volunteers contribute nearly 60 million hours to Michigan nonprofit organizations, an equivalent of more than 28,000 full-time employees and nearly $760 million in donated labor. • According to Michigan Giving & Volunteering, a 1999 statewide report published jointly by the Council of Michigan Foundations and the Michigan Nonprofit Association, 46.7 percent of Michigan adults volunteered during the past twelve months - the majority indicating they are volunteering more hours annually than in the past. • Michigan Giving & Volunteering also revealed that 81.3 percent of those who did not volunteer in 1999 indicated they had not been asked to do so over half said they had been volunteers in the past. Changing Dynamics and Capacity Challenges in Supporting Volunteerism and Service-Learning • As a requirement for graduation, many school districts and institutions of higher education are mandating students complete a set number of hours of volunteer service annually. While the intent is to civically engage young people in a meaningful experience, the need for formal training available to nonprofit organizations, to the schools and to youth far exceeds its availability. • The percentage of students engaged in service-learning through institutions of higher education has annually increased at a double-digit pace over the past several years. Over 17 million hours of service were contributed by undergraduates nation wide. As this trend continues, institutions of higher education will require expanded support services such as those provided by CMA to ensure the quality of service-learning programs. • Michigan corporations are experiencing a growing need to engage in local initiatives to improve the quality of life in the communities in which they are located. Increasingly, communities are looking to their corporate citizens to provide human resources - board members and volunteers - in �Mr. Elan Garonzik Page 4 March 7, 2002 support of community projects. Both corporations and nonprofit organizations are experiencing challenges in terms of their organizational capacities to effectively manage, maintain and support this community resource. • Family volunteerism is a growing trend as many families are looking for opportunities to spend quality time together in service to their communities. With the demand for quality family volunteer experiences increasing, local nonprofit organizations need specialized training and technical assistance to effectively serve this constituency. The CMA endowment was created to provide resources for innovative grantmaking, program development, and operational costs. On an annual basis, the endowment allows the organization to sustain current initiatives and focus on the development of new programs. Though the endowment earnings will be significant, it is anticipated that CMA will continue to fundraise on a limited basis. New dollars that CMA will seek on a limited basis will support new program development versus operational costs. CMA will rely on the endowment earnings, program fees, corporate sponsorships and fees for service for revenue generation. It is not anticipated that CMA will seek funding through membership or annual campaigns. The USA Freedom Corps should reflect this reality. • States and local communities have developed strong public/private partnerships through service and volunteerism that can be utilized. The USA Freedom Corps should target these partnerships as potential models and structures • Communities are best able to define their needs, strategies and solutions. The USA Freedom Corps should provide adequate resources for communities to plan, collaborate and create innovative programs and partnerships that target national imperatives with local long-term solutions. • Homeland security and community service require a strong local "infrastructure" to implement and support local efforts (i.e. Vounteer Centers, K-12 and Higher Education, National Service, etc.). The USA Freedom Corps must invest in this "infrastructure" as a means of delivering quality programming in a cost effective manner. Recommendations: 1. Allow states and local communities to help define what constitutes "homeland security" and the role(s) volunteer centers, higher education institutions, national service and other volunteer programs can play in ensuring the safety of our communities. 2. Provide the lion's share of the resources for implementation of the Citizen Corps and USA Freedom Corps programs generally (except Peace Corps) to states and local communities based on their needs and plans. 3. Make the resources flexible so that governors, mayors, community leaders and local citizens can innovate. Red tape and overly cumbersome national requirements can stifle creativity. 4. Use states and local communities as incubators for solutions much as the government has done for welfare reform, education, workforce development and other human services programs. 5. While I am not in a position to disclose the information I am now sharing with you publicly, I have had initial discussions with the Michigan Nonprofit Association regarding a transfer of their Volunteerism Endowments to the CMA Endowment. The current value of these two endowments is $1,300,000. That will bring us within $650,000 of our goal and will give us several months to raise that amount. If my request is approved, it will take us about a month to transfer those endowments. Michigan Nonprofit Association, Volunteer Centers of Michigan �• Northern Michigan - Kyle and Anne will arrange a brief encounter between Connie Binsfield and Michelle during the State of the State message at which time Connie will be asked to author a letter to the Rotary Charities requesting a $50,000 grant to CMA. After the meeting, a follow up letter from Michelle (to be drafted by Kyle and John) will be sent to Connie with a draft of her letter and proposal to Rotary Charities. • Southeastern Michigan - Kyle will rework the letters from Michelle to DaimlerChrysler and General Motors to reflect a lighter tone and more positive encouragement, informing each that the Ford Motor Company gift level of $1,000,000 was awarded. It was felt that the letters should take on a different tone, particularly since Sandy Ulsh informed Frank and Rod that Ford was considering a $1,000,000 level gift. The purpose now is only to officially acknowledge that the Ford Motor Company Fund gift has been awarded to CMA. It was agreed that the best approach to the potential major individual contributors and larger corporate contributors in the Southeastern Michigan area is through a meeting modeled after the Grand Rapids luncheon. One presentation from the Governor and Michelle would satisfy the necessity of multiple meetings. The invitations would be sent from Peter and Julie Cummings. Michelle will talk to the Governor and Julie will talk to Peter. Concerning the approach to Max Fisher, Michelle will talk to the Governor to determine the most appropriate action in pursuing the request. John agreed to talk to Peter Secchia to consider authoring the Tier II Corporate letters for those companies not located in Southeastern Michigan and not a part of the Southeastern Michigan luncheon. • John and Kyle agreed to work closely with Anne to coordinate scheduling for Michelle, particularly as we approach the completion of the campaign. We are almost halfway to meeting! pur goal of establishing a $10 million endowment fund for the ConnectMichigan Alliance. I want to update you oh the status of our efforts in Southeastern Michigan. I am meeting with Virgil Carr on October 10 to discuss this opportunity. The Foundation's decision will be made during its December or March Board meeting. I have enclosed a Board roster for this Foundation. If you have a relationship with any of the Board members, an informal call from you indicating your personal support for this initiative would be timely. in The Community Foundation for Southeastern Michigan: We submitted a grant request in the amount of $150,000 to the Whitney Fund and were awarded a $50,000 grant. We recently submitted a second request to CFSEM for a grant in the amount of $150,000. You may remember that after our meeting with Mariam, we had hoped to generate grants totaling $250,000 from CFSEM. Our pending request and the $50,000 grant already awarded ConnectMichigan Alliance P.O. McGregor Fund: Sam and I will meet with David Campbell on October 15 to make a formal presentation on behalf of the ConnectMichigan Alliance. The Southfield Community Foundation: We submitted a proposal in the amount of $900 to the Southfield Community Foundation last May. Most community foundations delayed their decisions on CMA requests until their fall 2001 board meetings. I have enclosed a list of The Southfield Community Foundation's Board members. A personal call from you to any of the members with whom you have a relationship will enhance our efforts with this foundation. The Skillman Foundation: Sam, Kyle, Tim and I met to discuss strategies for approaching The Skillman Foundation. In keeping with the Foundation's focus on youth, our strategy is to team up with CMF's Learning to Give program. Given that you are a member of the Learning to Give Steering Committee, I am sure you will be pleased to know that up to five percent of the annual earnings from the CMA endowment that are a direct result of Skillman Foundation support will be granted to Learning to Give. For example, should The Skillman Foundation approve a grant totaling $500,000, up to five percent of $500,000 (depending on how well the endowment does in any given year) will be available for Learning to Give. Our request will be for a grant in the amount of $500,000 and our proposal is currently being developed. It will be submitted by the end of October. I have enclosed a Board roster for The Skillman Foundation. A personal call from you to any of the Board members with whom you have a relationship will enhance our efforts with this Foundation. Corporations DaimlerChrysler Corporation: Terry Pruitt recently called Frank Fountain and was assured that "everything was okay" in terms of our request for $1 million. Frank indicated DCC would make its decision in mid-September but �did not comment on the amount we might expect. We should hear of their decision any day. Ford Motor Company: I think the meeting we had with Sandy Ulsh went very well. We do not have a specific timeframe concerning a decision on our request for $1 million but expect the decision will come before the end of the year. Michelle is placing a follow-up call to Jacques Nasser to ensure the request stays in front of him. General Motors Corporation: Kyle had a conversation with Debbie Dingell and Vivian Pickard about GM's participation in the campaign. Kyle felt that Debbie was skeptical and Vivian suggested that Michelle contact Rod Gillum to reenergize this effort. In my experience, GM typically comes in lower than DaimlerChrysler and Ford in this type of campaign. I do not expect to hear about GM's decision until after we have heard from DaimlerChrysler and Ford. Other United Way Community Services: I mentioned in my update on our efforts with The Kresge Foundation that I will be meeting with Virgil Carr on October 10, to discuss the potential to house a CMA staff person at UWCS. I will keep you updated on the progress of this effort. Julie, your leadership in the ConnectMichigan Alliance Campaign is greatly appreciated. Mawby Impact on Southeastern Michigan iL .^Cj/W r o January 10, 2001 �Michigan Campus Compact Purpose: Michigan Campus Compact (MCC) promotes educational citizenship by helping campuses encourage service-learning experiences, which develop students' sense of civic responsibility. MCC members believe that direct contact with social problems and efforts to solve them allows students to reflect critically on the world around them and encourages them to take an active role in their communities. These experiences lay the foundation for a life-long ethic of civic responsibility and community service. Mission: The mission of MCC is to promote a commitment to community service and to foster a life-long service ethic in students. Specifically, MCC seeks to create or expand community service and servicelearning opportunities for students while promoting academic and co-curricular programs and to advocate for public policies that encourage and support student community service. Primary Constituents: MCC's primary constituents are the 33 member institutions of higher education in the MCC network. MCC supports the efforts of presidents, faculty, administrators, students and staff. MCC is the first organization in the United States to include its member presidents, students, faculty and staff in the development and implementation of service initiatives. All nine benefit directly from MCC programs and �services. MCC will issue grants totaling $75,000 to member institutions serving Southeastern Michigan over the next three years ($25,000/year). MCC's current organizational capacity promotes opportunities for service-learning and civic engagement on campuses located throughout Southeastern Michigan for over 40,000 students. While this strategy is proving to be successful in terms of institutionalizing service-learning in higher education curriculum, the current availability and allocation of resources limits MCC's capacity to address the full scope of needs in this area. ConnectMichigan Alliance Expands Impact in Southeastern Michigan: The ConnectMichigan Alliance expands and reorganizes available resources which enables MCC to more effectively and efficiently meet the needs of its constituency. It is estimated that CMA will result in four new member campuses in Southeastern Michigan and opportunities for an additional 15,000 to 20,000 students Southeastern Michigan. It is also projected that MCC will expand its grantmaking from $25,000 per year to $50,000. �Michigan Community Service Commission Program Impact for Greater Metro Detroit Investments Annually, the MCSC primarily focuses three funding streams on the greater metro-Detroit area. For this fiscal year, those investments are represented as follows: Michigan's AmeriCorps Learn & Serve America Michigan Volunteer Investment Grants Total Annual Investment $1,577,095 $ 120,113 S 150.000 $1,847,208 The MCSC's overall programming budget totals more than $5 million. The 1.8 million invested in Detroit only represents 36% of the funds available. One of the primary challenges the MCSC faces in getting those dollars in Detroit is our inability to effectively target and leverage resources to nonprofit organizations in Detroit that have the capacity to take on federal and state grants. The ConnectMichigan Alliance and the endowment that will support it can help the MCSC target those organizations, build up their capacity to access public funds and aid them in their plans to sustain quality service and volunteer programs. Highlights Among the programming investments MCSC in the Detroit area are: City Year Detroit City Year Detroit enrolls 70 members to serve in Michigan's AmeriCorps. City Year is a national service organization that unites young adults, ages 17-24, from diverse racial, cultural, educational and socioeconomic backgrounds for a demanding year of full-time community service, leadership development, and civic engagement. United in their desire to serve, corps members invest their talents and energies as directors of after-school programs, classroom facilitators in elementary and middle schools and builders of playgrounds and urban gardens. Detroit Academic Success The Detroit Academic Success Program involves 20 full-time members who provide in-school tutoring to low achieving elementary school students in five elementary schools in the Empowerment Zone to increase academic achievement and reading comprehension. The members also develop after-school tutoring labs for 200 neighborhood youth. In addition, the program develops community-wide service-learning projects to promote civic responsibility. Michigan 4-H Foundation for MSU Extension 4-H Youth Programs of Oakland County The Oak Park/Pontiac 4-H Learn and Serve Program is a partnership between MSU Extension 4-H Youth Programs of Oakland County, AmeriCorps Oakland, the 4-H VISTA Project, and the school districts of Oak Park and Pontiac. The program is designed to address the low literacy levels in those communities by providing experiential learning activities for a minimum of 150 program participants, most of whom are low-income or at-risk. The participants, who range in age between 5 and 19, assess the specific needs of the community, create plans to promote literacy in a way that satisfies true community needs, and carry out their plans. Such service activities take place approximately eight times per year. �Volunteer Impact Volunteer Impact has tapped the resources of the Michigan Volunteer Investment Grants program for two years totaling $125,000 in state support that will leverage other funds to be permanently invested in their local community foundation. With help from more than 10,000 volunteers, Volunteer Impact has completed more than 1,500 projects for some 200 local non-profit organizations since 1990. Volunteer Impact also hosts Hands-On Detroit Day, their annual fund raiser, when hundreds of volunteers help dozens of non-profit agencies in a single day. Volunteer Impact, Detroit's premiere volunteer corps, was founded on the idea that we all want to give something back to the community. But too often, we lack the time and the resources or simply don't know where to begin. �Michigan Nonprofit Association Mission: The Michigan Nonprofit Association's (MNA) mission is to promote the awareness and effectiveness of Michigan's nonprofit sector, and to advance the cause of volunteerism and philanthropy in the state. ConnectMichigan Alliance Expands Impact in Southeastern Michigan: The ConnectMichigan Alliance expands and reorganizes available resources that enable VCM to operate in a manner consistent with the Points of Light Foundation's vision and the development of the National Network of Volunteer Centers. More importantly, it enables VCM to respond to the needs of the nonprofit community in Southeastern Michigan by transitioning resources in a manner that supports a network of centers that can provide targeted services to targeted areas. In preparation for the move to the ConnectMichigan Alliance, VCM is retooling its resources and focus to serve and assess organizations based on operational and program standards, rather than on geographic location. �In preparation for the transition, VCM has begun to provide basic technical assistance to six emerging volunteer centers which serve Southeastern Michigan. Through a $20 million endowment, the combined forces of the Michigan Campus Compact (MCC), Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC), Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA) and the Volunteer Centers of Michigan (VCM) will permanently sustain and expand the "volunteer infrastructure" for which Michigan is known and heralded. Once the campaign is completed, the ConnectMichigan Alliance will achieve its goal of providing avenues for every Michigan citizen to serve their community through volunteer service and civic action. This means: • • • • Access to a strong and healthy volunteer center for every Michigan resident, having every Michigan college and university encourage citizen service among its students, faculty and staff building strong nonprofits to meet our communities' most pressing social needs, and leveraging state and federal government resources to empower communities to address their local challenges. "The magnitude of our social problems will require that all citizens and institutions make a commitment to volunteering as a way of life and as a primary opportunity to create needed change." Governor George W. Romney, 1907-1995 Governor Romney's words ring as true today as ever before. Volunteers and the positive impact they have on our communities can change the way we live. But what maintains the momentum for our volunteers? What supports their work and recognizes their efforts? What encourages the young and young at heart to give their time, talents and treasures to communities? The answer in Michigan is clear. Michigan has a proud tradition of supporting volunteer efforts through what we commonly call our nonprofit "infrastructure." The Alliance: Genuine Collaboration Major components of that infrastructure include a statewide network of volunteer centers helping local communities match volunteers with volunteer opportunities (Volunteer Centers of Michigan), an association of colleges and universities that have joined a compact that works to instill an ethic of service and civic action in the college students of today (Michigan Campus Compact), a trade association �for nonprofits to give voice and support to the vast array of nonprofit organizations throughout the state (Michigan Nonprofit Association), and a governmental body that promotes service and volunteerism by leveraging state and federal funds to support and recognize local volunteer efforts (Michigan Community Service Commission). Separate, but working in collaboration, these organizations have combined to build a powerful force—infrastructure—for volunteerism in Michigan. In October of 2000, the partnering organizations (MCC, MCSC, MNA & VCM) committed to building a permanent infrastructure for volunteers in Michigan by forming the ConnectMichigan Alliance. The ConnectMichigan Alliance combines the leadership and resources of the four partnering organizations all for the good of the volunteer field. Never before has such a diverse and powerful partnership been formed on a statewide level. This innovative partnership will leverage additional financial and human resources, reduce duplication of efforts, create a seamless support structure for Michigan's volunteers, establish new programs and initiatives and eliminate wasteful expenditures of vital resources. The ConnectMichigan Alliance will serve to continue Michigan's legacy of service and volunteerism—one of our state's most powerful forces. The Campaign Sustaining and strengthening that force is the purpose of the ConnectMichigan Alliance and the goal of the ConnectMichigan Alliance Campaign. At the completion of the campaign, the ConnectMichigan Alliance will be supported by a $20 million endowment, which, in itself, was created in an extraordinary way. In June of 2000, Governor John Engler signed into law Senate Bill 968 providing a challenge grant to build the ConnectMichigan Alliance Endowment. This grant provides up to $10 million that must be matched on a 1 to 1 basis by the private sector no later than November of 2002. The ConnectMichigan Alliance Endowment represents an unprecedented public/private partnership and truly builds a long-term support mechanism for Michigan's volunteers. The Leadership The creation of the ConnectMichigan Alliance Campaign Leadership will demonstrate the scope and depth of the ethic of service and volunteerism in Michigan. As we all know, community service and volunteerism realize their greatest potential when they become vehicles to connect people of differing and unique backgrounds to solve problems. That is why the ConnectMichigan Alliance Campaign will be supported and spear-headed by leaders from the philanthropic community, government, corporate sector and individuals concerned about supporting Michigan's volunteers.
