Terry is also committed to becoming involved with the Strosacker request. He agreed with the level of request for Strosacker that you and I discussed. He set the levels for Dow Chemical and Dow Corning at $250,000 and $150,000 respectively. Now that you have a feel for the ConnectMichigan Alliance and what it can do for Michigan, I want to talk to you about why your participation is so very important. Many believe that volunteering is something that just happens. People recognize a need, figure out how they can help and just do it. While this may certainly true for many of us in this room, it isn't universal. If it were, we wouldn't see the tremendous challenges we see daily in our communities. Challenges like low test scores, teen pregnancies, violence in schools and decaying neighborhoods are local issues that can be address only through local solutions. Yet, we know that only 46 percent of Michigan adults volunteered in 1999. In addition, the majority who did not volunteer that year said that they had not been asked even though they had said that they volunteered in the past. How do we engage more citizens in local community problem solving? We ask and then we show them how to make an impact. Volunteerism takes the dedication and hard work of local people and organizations that are closest to the needs of communities and can identify human and financial resources to address those needs and engage others to help. In short—volunteerism isn't free or easy, but it is effective. It takes coordination, support and resources for volunteerism flourish and become a common expectation. However, we know that volunteers—properly trained and supported—can do far more good for a far longer period of time than any government program. Former Governor George Romney knew this and worked throughout his life to make volunteer opportunities part of every citizens daily experiences. We all remember his goal of making volunteer centers as common as the post office. Well, we are here today to make goals like that a reality. He believed, as I do, that we can—each of us—do something to profoundly change the lives of others. Let me give you some examples. Every year, Michelle and I get to meet the winners of the Governor's Service Awards. These people represent the exemplary efforts of citizens who are young and young at heart, and who are giving of themselves to make our communities safer, more prosperous �and better places to live. Last year, I met Gertrude Perry from Greenville, who was honored for her service as a Foster Grandparent Program volunteer. Since 1989, Ms. Perry has volunteered with various organizations and schools. As a Foster Grandparent Program volunteer, the then eighty-five year old volunteered 20 hours each week during the school year, 560 hours every year, and logging more than 6,000 hours over the past 11 years in service to young people in need. Kevin Elya, from Brighton, who was honored for his commitment to Paws with a Cause—a program that works to train dogs that help persons with disabilities navigate seemingly routine daily tasks for some, serious challenges for others. Mr. Elya serves as a volunteer presenter, educator and fund-raiser. He has touched the lives of thousands and changed the lives of many by encouraging people with disabilities to seek out ways to become independent. Mr. Elya is in a wheelchair and uses his unique perspective to help others and works to train dogs for companions and aides to other persons with disabilities. These are just two examples of exemplary volunteerism—there are certainly many more that we could all point to as worthy of praise. Their dedication is uncommon as is the support and coordination that they receive. Both of the examples I mentioned illustrate volunteers who work in a structured, supported and sustainable volunteer organizations that have a genuine impact on their community. That is what the ConnectMichigan Alliance can do for communities all across Michigan. By combining the forces of the state's premiere volunteer support organizations with the resources of a $20 million endowment, we all can ensure that future generations will be served by and themselves become, community volunteers. That is why I worked with fine Legislators like Glenn Steil to put up a $10 million dollar challenge grant to build an endowment to support volunteers now and in the future. This challenge must be met by November of 2002 and has gotten off to a fine start. Both the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the C.S. Mott Foundation have each committed $1 million to the campaign. That leaves $8 million more. With your help we can reach that goal. In order to be successful, the ConnectMichigan Alliance Campaign needs to secure $1.5 million from west Michigan donors. It is our hope that $1 million of that sum can be secured from the greater Grand Rapids community. We need your help both through your participation in this campaign and you willingness to help us gain the support of others. Michelle and I have often talked about what can be done to bring volunteerism to a level that makes it a part of every Michigan citizen's life. Michelle has been instrumental in making this happen through her own personal leadership both here in Michigan and at the national level. Her role in shaping one of the nation's leading commissions on service and volunteerism along with her own personal volunteer efforts are exactly the type of dedication she seeks to instill in others. But it takes an efficient and effective series of individuals, organizations and events to make it happen. We often call this, �"infrastructure" for volunteerism. While "infrastructure" is not a glamorous term to sell—the term is accurate. Like any community-building mechanism, a sound and efficient support system has to be in place to make it work. Just like good roads, safe schools and clean parks make communities better; they are not as "sexy" as sleek cars, ornate school buildings, and shining skyscrapers. Yet, it is that infrastructure that makes it all possible. We now have to provide the same type of support for our volunteers. Volunteer centers, training for volunteers, service-learning projects and corporate volunteer programs may not sound glamorous, they are absolutely critical to building enduring volunteer community problem solving. I am sure that you will recognize what I and the Michigan Legislature did last year— volunteerism takes a long-term commitment to make work and that we need to endow our support so that future generations can take that "infrastructure" for granted. Please join me in making service and giving part of every Michigan citizen's life experience. I was calling in from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to discuss Michigan's Service-Learning with Chris Kwak. Regarding the Grand Rapids Service Corps and Judy Hooker, the GRSC was in a difficult position 12-18 months ago when the management of the program fell apart and was unable to effectively administer the AmeriCorps program. They decided to step away from the AmeriCorps program and the larger corps model to reflect on what the program should be in the future and how to sustain it. In our dealings with the program staff, we worked to ensure that the program could close out their program and take efforts to ensure that corps members were able to complete their terms of service and receive their education awards. The AmeriCorps program has been closed out for over a year. Since that time, the GRSC has merged with the YMCA of Grand Rapids to build a ServiceLearning program that focuses on the 5,000 youth currently involved in after-school programs in the Y's seven branches in Kent County. This model uses the "Corps members" to operate summer school service-learning programs and during the school year, staff will provide Service-Learning professional development training for the YMCA staff who have contact with children the YMCA serves. I was present at their launch two weeks ago. Judy was there along with several other original GRSC board members. Diana Sieger was also present. We discussed the possibility of the connection between the new GRSC and the ConnectMichigan Alliance. She agreed that she would discuss the potential connection in her remarks at the luncheon tomorrow and it will be reinforcing for you to speak on the potential connection between the Alliance and the YMCA Service-Learning Program. �June4, 2001 I have requested that Toyin (Executive Director of the GRSC) bring brochures describing the program that were used at their launch. Peter, Tom and others are aware of the program and will speak to the possible connection as well. I spoke with Judy Hooker at the launch event, but we did not discuss the potential for and connection regarding the CMA. There was too little time and the place wasn't right. I did get a chance to gauge her interest in bringing new funding opportunities to the table and she was receptive. collabon~tion We can go over some of the collateral materials tomorrow at the Amway. As many of you know, Peter wears so many hats; it is sometimes difficulty to know what to call him. For now, I will just say a very heartfelt thank you to a friend and dedicated volunteer. I also want to thank Peter for agreeing to help host this lovely luncheon today. I treasure your leadership and volunteer spirit. Thank you. Well, welcome to all of you here and thank you for joining us for this very brief, but hopefully inspiring program. John and I are very delighted that you have agreed to join us today to talk about an exciting opportunity to strengthen our communities—especially right here in west Michigan. As many of you know, John and I believe in the power that one individual can have to positively affect another. This tremendous force goes by many names—volunteerism, philanthropy, service—but whatever the label, it is always about giving of one's time, treasures and talents to others. There are no other enduring forms of community problem solving that we can point to that have as profound an impact as giving. And while we know the potential giving can have, we often find our communities blessed caring citizens who are often overwhelmed by their local challenges. John has pointed to this contradiction—overwhelming needs in places where people want to help, but don't know how—often during his public life and says that it is not a contradiction at all, but rather a formula for opportunity. Matching the needs of local communities with their own untapped human resources is what volunteerism and civic engagement are all about. And that is what John and I are here to discuss with you today. How do we connect our citizens with their communities so that they themselves can become the agents of positive local change? Our answer is the ConnectMichigan Alliance and the ConnectMichigan Alliance Campaign. The Alliance is an innovative partnership of the state's premiere volunteer support organizations: the Michigan Community Service Commission, Michigan Nonprofit Association, Michigan Campus Compact, and the Volunteer Centers of Michigan. The Campaign is a $20 million dollar endowment-building program to create a permanent support mechanism for our state's volunteers. This afternoon John, Peter, Diana and I are going to talk briefly about the ConnectMichigan Alliance and how it will support volunteers and the nonprofits they �serve statewide. We will present the concept and impact of this new organization and show you examples of how it will positively impact the greater Grand Rapids Community. We are also going to talk with about what you can do to help bring this cutting-edge initiative to fruition for Grand Rapids. There are volunteers here to address your questions and we have provided plenty of time for you to discuss this exciting opportunity. At your places you should have a copy of the ConnectMichigan Alliance Campaign Brochure that explains the principles and goals we have for this organization and the campaign that will support it. Later, we will be playing a short video that provides a deeper explanation of the program and offers testimony as to the merits of the work we all know is so very valuable to our communities. Finally, I would like to take a moment and introduce some of the wonderful volunteers who have agreed to help us develop the ConnectMichigan Alliance, many of which are here with us today. You have already heard from Peter Secchia. Joining Peter and myself are Dottie Johnson, trustee of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and member of the Board of Directors for the Corporation for National Service; Diana Sieger, Executive Director of the Grand Rapids Community Foundation; State Senator Glenn Steil who is in Lansing and could not be with us today as the Legislature is in session. PURPOSE The luncheon is an opportunity to introduce the ConnectMichigan Alliance (CMA) and the endowment campaign that supports it to an audience of Grand Rapids leaders and potential donors. II. BACKGROUND The ConnectMichigan Alliance Campaign is targeting $1.5 million from the Greater Grand Rapids Community for the $10 million matching campaign goal. Mrs. Engler, Diana Sieger and Tom Monaghan (campaign consultant) met with Peter Secchia to discuss the best strategy for approaching potential donors, (see detailed report attached) Mr. Secchia suggested an intimate gathering of potential donors, hosted by the Governor and First Lady would be the best way to "get the message out," demonstrate the importance of the program, provide a compelling appeal and access the maximum number of donors at one time thereby making the best use of the Governor's and First Lady's limited availability. III. PARTICIPANTS Mr. Secchia worked with Diana Sieger and Tom Monaghan to develop an initial invitation list which was then reviewed by Mrs. Engler and Anne Mervenne. To date, there are 22 guests attending including members of the DeVos and VanAndel families (see guest list attached). No one from the Meijer family is attending. In addition to the invited guests, staff and volunteers will be present to help "work the room" and act as resources in case questions arise. Michigan Fundraising Strategy Notes: In addition to reaffirming what is commonly known about Grand Rapids (specifically, that its philanthropic interests are regional in nature), PS explained the unique stewardship that occurs within Grand Rapids specifically and that even within that community, only those who reside in Grand Rapids are considered true members of the community. Most notable examples of this are Bob & Judy Hooker who now reside (a good portion of the time) outside of Michigan. Any message must be tailored to keeping the good things going in Grand Rapids and demonstrating how CMA will provide a continuous level of support into the future. The investments need to show that the money donated is working in Grand Rapids for Grand Rapids. Transition in leadership at the state level was discussed as a possible justification for developing the CMA. PS interests are primarily focused on helping the Englers since Mrs. Engler asked him. While receptive, Peter Secchia clearly did not understand what the CMA would do for Grand Rapids and was not receptive to the concept until we were able to target a specific example of how one of the partners in the CMA was impacting a component of the community (discussed the Creston Neighborhood AmeriCorps program that MCSC currently funds). More examples like this will have to be crafted before seeking funding in this community. Peter Secchia agreed to help by hosting a lunch of the potential donors from the Grand Rapids area, but said that it would have to appear as though Governor and Mrs. Engler were making the ask (i.e. be their event). �Pledge/Gift Received: No solicitation at this time Staff Assigned: Kyle Caldwell Action Steps: Bring Grand Rapids donors together to discuss the CMA Campaign. The USA Freedom Corps must invest in this "infrastructure" as a means of delivering quality programming in a cost effective manner. Recommendations: 1. Allow states and local communities to help define what constitutes "homeland security" and the role(s) volunteer centers, higher education institutions, national service and other volunteer programs can play in ensuring the safety of our communities. 2. To do so, the organization and its leadership need to begin to create the climate for bold action and suppmt inherent to all successful nonprofit organizations. The ConnectMichigan Alliance Leadership Fund will be a first step toward ensuring that the ConnectMichigan Alliance can: • address the ever-evolving changes in the nonprofit sector; • exploit new opportunities that create relevant and needed new local programs and initiatives; • communicate and highlight the great work oflocal community-based initiatives; • research trends that might impact the service and volunteer infrastmcture; and • develop leadership at the local level that can support and enhance the growth of Michigan's ethic of service to others. Partnering with research institutions in an attempt to utilize existing polling, tracking and survey processes to measure how service and volunteerism are potentially impacting community issues (i.e. education, health care, housing, economic development, civic engagement, children's issues) CMA Overview The ConnectMichigan Alliance is a cutting-edge nonprofit organization focused on building a lifelong ethic of service, volunteerism and civic engagement through organizations where we live, work and learn in Michigan. CMA is comprised of a number of partner organizations and programs that work in unison to ensure that a solid infrastmcture exists to support local volunteer efforts. These organizations include: Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC), Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA), Michigan Campus Compact (MCC), Volunteer Centers of Michigan (VCM), Michigan's Promise and national service programs to support Mentor Michigan. These organizations and programs are vital to the landscape of support provided to nonprofits and charitable causes in our state. The MCSC and MNA are the founding partners of this public/private partnership and bring together the government and the nonprofit sector to advance the cause ofvolunteerism in our state. The MCC and VCM are the founding affiliates of CMA and represent higher education and community-based volunteering respectively. CMA provides the day-to-day operational, administrative and programmatic support to these organizations as they champion service and civic engagement opportunities across Michigan. Michigan can be proud of the work of these and many other organizations that work hard every day to harness the power of individuals to strengthen Michigan communities. With nearly half of all Michigan residents volunteering (according to Michigan Volunteering and Giving), it becomes ever more important to ensure that systems exist to channel people's passions and intent toward oppotiunities to address genuine needs. This need to maximize human resources was why the founders of CMA embarked upon a $20 million 5 �DRAFT CONFIDENTIAL~ FOR INTERNAL PURPOSES ONLY-DO NOT DISTRIBUTE CounectMichigan Alliance Leadership Priorities The ConnectMichigan Alliance (CMA) is cutting-edge statewide nonprofit organization designed to support service and volunteerism in Michigan in perpetuity. Because of its unique structure (an alliance of several organization supported by an endowment) and its leadership position nationally, it is often difficult to compare systems and philosophies with like organizations. In other words, without competition or similar organizations to compare CMA to, determining the operational procedures and expectations (including salaries) becomes difficult. However, the infonnation below attempts to provide some guidance to the CMA Board of Trustees to determine the overall priorities regarding the organization's positions on leadership, growth, and compensation. Leadership Goals When it was created in 2000, the ConnectMichigan Alliance was the only nonprofit of its kind. This remains tlue-no other statewide nonprofit alliance supporting service and volunteerism with an eight-figure endowment currently exists in Michigan or nationally. This places CMA in an unprecedented top tier leadership position and one that should be maintained. To do so, it becomes vitally important to ensure that the trustees attract and retain the highest level senior staff. The priority of the CMA Trustees will be to: • • • • develop a compensation plan that is competitive and fiscally prudent; gamer senior and executive staff with significant state and national experience; competitively seek talent respected and sought at either/both the state and national levels; and ensure CMA attracts and retains entrepreneurial spirited individuals and utilizes that spirit to the advantage of the organization. Growth Goals CMA currently includes four founding organizations and several programs all supported through the proceeds of a $19.4 million endowment. While this is an amazing accomplishment, it should not be looked upon as the end of the organization's potentialmuch to the contrary-it should be looked upon as the beginning. However, future growth will be determined by the organizational leadership and the ability to attract more partners and resources. CMA must align its goals and priorities for growth around its incentives for its leadership to achieve them. The Executive Committee will establish the compensation for the CEO based on annual performance assessments. a. Each year the Board of Trustees will develop their goals and include a target amount for the overall annual campaign (see Annual Campaign Structure and the CMA FY 2005-06 Budget attached) based on needs, capacity and current market expectations. For FY 2005-06, the CMA Board of Trustees established a campaign goal of $100,000. Advantages to Donors and ConnectMichigan Alliance The formation of the ConnectMichigan Alliance, as its name implies, brought together organizations in a way that maximized each organization's expertise and complemented each organization's needs. The formation of the financial structUI'e was not different. The CmmectMichigan Alliance Campaign brought together the public and private sectors through a challenge grant from the State of Michigan that was matched by the private sector dollar for dollar. These resources were entrusted in the Capital Region Community Foundation which provided donors the security then needed to be sure the funds would be handled effectively, but also provided donors with state tax incentives not available to them through donations to other nonprofit causes. The ConnectMichigan Alliance Leadership Fund will provide the same opportunities by providing donors the option of giving directly to the ConnectMichigan Alliance (a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization), or one of several endowment funds designed to support the organization's work housed at the Capital Region Community Foundation that would allow donors to maximize their state tax credit options. Focusing on the Challenge and the Opportunity The Michigan service and volunteer landscape is envied by many. Michigan is a leader because ofthe collaborative and cooperative nature by which state and local organizations work together, the entrepreneurial spirit of leaders, and the strong public and private sector support for service and volunteerism. 2 �DRAFT FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY While the general and day-to-day support for the components of CMA is partially assured through our endowment, much larger needs remain that require focused leadership and dedicated support. Significant challenges remain including: • Communicating the Cause. CMA remains an evolving and growing organization that is only now just beginning find its potential. Still, CMA's innovative construction provides both an innovative and enduring tool, it also presents a very difficult challenge to explain and promote. How can the need and value for service and volunteering be articulated in compelling terms? How can the impact of local efforts be shared to communicate the need for all to serve? What means are most effective in articulating the needfor human and financial support ofservice and volunteerism? • Supporting Local Innovation Communities across Michigan are fertile ground for incubating innovative programs and initiatives that can demonstrate how service and volunteerism may serve as enduring methods of community problem solving. How can local communities expand innovative models? How can CMA empower local organizations to engage more individuals in service and volunteerism? • Developing and Strengthening Leadership Any social movement, like ensuring that an ethic of service permeates the fabric of society in Michigan, requires the dedicated leadership of people. CMA must to ensure that the needed skills exist to lead this movement. How can we ensure that the resources are available to train and skill generations ofleaders in the nonprofit sector? Where will the next generation of leadership learn the ethic ofservice and its role in our society? Knowing these factors can help inform CMA as to how the volunteer-based organizations we support can be even more effective. Who is volunteering, how often, where and why? What are the barriers to service? What roles do education, the workplace, family, and other societal issues play in forming the willingness of individuals to serve? Are nonprofits doing all they canto help volunteers aid in their missions? What measurable difference are volunteers making in communities and the lives of their residents? Develop a partnership with research and evaluation organizations to determine the short- and long-term impact of service and volunteerism through the CMA Institutionalize a comprehensive and interactive database that can utilize local and statewide data to analyze how CMA is reaching out to communities. Partnering with research institutions in an attempt to utilize existing polling, tracking and survey processes to measure how service and volunteerism are potentially impacting community issues (i.e. education, health care, housing, economic development, civic engagement, children's issues) CMA Overview The ConnectMichigan Alliance a cutting-edge nonprofit organization focused on building a lifelong ethic of service, volunteerism and civic engagement through organizations where we live, work and learn in Michigan. CMA is comprised of a number of partner organizations and programs that work in unison to ensure that a solid infrastructure exists to support local volunteer efforts. These organizations include: Michigan Community Se1vice Commission (MCSC), Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA), Michigan Campus Compact (MCC), Volunteer Centers of Michigan (VCM), Michigan's Promise and national service programs to support Mentor Michigan. These organizations and programs are vital to the landscape of support provided to nonprofits and charitable causes in our state. The MCSC and MNA are the founding partners of this public/private partnership and bring together the government and the nonprofit sector to advance the cause of volunteerism in our state. The MCC and VCM are the founding affiliates of CMA and represent higher education and community-based volunteering respectively. CMA provides the day-to-day operational, administrative and programmatic support to these organizations as they champion service and civic engagement opportunities across Michigan. Michigan can be proud of the work if these and many other organizations that work hard every day to harness the power of individuals to strengthen Michigan communities. With nearly half of all Michigan residents volunteering (according to Michigan Volunteering and Giving), it becomes ever more important to ensure that systems exist to charmel people's passions and intent toward opportunities to address genuine needs. This need to maximize human resources was why the founders of CMA embarked upon a $20 million 5 �DRAFT FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY endowment campaign to permanently support the Michigan service and volunteer infrastructure. That campaign was completed in December of2003. Today, the affiliate partners and programs of CMA are assured that their general operational and limited programmatic support is assured through the CMA Endowment Fund.
