It will be an annual event to provide national recognition to communities for their youth-focused practices and policies. Every city, town and local municipality in America is eligible for recognition. The "100 Best" will represent communities from all strands from the rich fabric of American life rural, suburban and urban - and from all regions of the country. Applications are available until July 29, 2005. As a member of the America’s Promise Alliance, the ConnectMichigan Alliance and Michigan’s Promise endorse and applaud this important campaign believing that the effort will highlight the important role mentoring, service and communities play in creating a healthy environment for youth people. As the Chairman of the ConnectMichigan Alliance, the host organization for Michigan’s Promise, I am delighted to share in this great start to the Women’s Initiative. ConnectMichigan Alliance/Michigan’s Promise I represent the ConnectMichigan Alliance here today, but I am also proud that I have been involved with the “Promise” effort in Michigan since its inception. Attended the Summit in Philly Launched Saginaw’s Promise Served on the Michigan Community Service Commission that launched Michigan’s Promise Connection to Women’s Initiative Now, we all have the opportunity to once again put Michigan in the lead of volunteerism and philanthropy with the Women’s Initiative. This program will focus on bringing women of color with young girls in mentoring relationships to focus on increasing philanthropy in our state. America’s Promise I am also delighted to accept on behalf of the ConnectMichigan Alliance, a $50,000 grant from America’s Promise that will be used to support the Women’s Initiatives and all the 29 Communities of Promise in their work to bring the five promises to children. The public/private initiative called, “Women and Girls in Service to Children and Youth in Michigan” is a new program that will recruit women and young girls in six Michigan cities, including Lansing. “We are honored to be chosen to engage our women leaders in mentoring girls and improving the lives in our community,” said XXXXX of the Capital Area United Way. Comerica Bank provided a $7,000 matching contribution to the Lansing initiative. “Women and Girls in Service to Children and Youth in Michigan” is a $400,000 grant program funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service that is designed to engage more women in service and philanthropy through local United Way agencies in Battle Creek, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Midland and Lansing. The program will focus on women of color working with children to get them the five resources, or Promises, identified by America’s Promise as essential their successful growth: caring individual, safe place, healthy start, marketable skill, and an opportunity to serve. “America’s Promise is excited about bringing the resources of the United Way and the passion of women philanthropists together in Michigan to focus on the needs of children,” said Richard Wells, Vice President for Community and Public Policy with America’s Promise—The Alliance for Youth. America’s Promise—The Alliance for Youth was founded by Ret. Gen. Colin Powell after the 1997 President’s Summit for America’s Future in Philadelphia. To date, America's Promise has created a diverse and growing Alliance, partnering with more than 400 national organizations and more than 400 local efforts to fulfill one or more of the Five Promises. The five other communities involved in the program will focus on matching young women with the needs of children. “Michigan’s Promise is built on the idea that we are all responsible for the future of our children—this initiative helps us expand this ideal,” said Terry Pruitt, chairman of the ConnectMichigan Alliance. Launched in October 1997, Michigan's Promise is the state's response to the national America's Promise effort and seeks to make Michigan’s streets safer, its children healthier and its communities better. Adams, Officiating �The Obituary Vmgil Rowand (March 25, 1940 - May 30, 2003) United Way Community Services President and CEO Virgil Howard Carr died Friday, May 30th at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan as a result of complications following a stroke. Virgil Howard Carr was bom in Waterloo, Iowa to Ernest E. and Kathrine Carr. Mr. Carr was dedicated to. and leaves to cherish his memory his wife of over 22 years, Mrs. Mygene Lipscomb Carr. Virgil and Mygene walked together along a path as soul mates; enjoying fishing, and traveling, just to name a few of the joyous shared moments. His legacy will forever continue through his children. Mrs. Kimberly Carr-Irvin (Dennis) from Carr's first marriage to Mary Martin Carr; Lisa Adams (Raymond), and two sons, Ron Harmon, and Rodrick Tarver. Virgil cherished his surviving brothers, Benjamin Grundy-Carr, Ernest Carr and John Carr all of Waterloo, Iowa. He was preceded in death by both of his parents and sisters, Daisy Williams, Hattie Harrington, Suyvella Burkett, Clem Amos and Lathier Bagsby: brothers, Chauncey Carr and Thomas Carr. His father-in-law, Mr. Willie G. Lipscomb Sr.; brother-in-law, Mr. Clyde Lipscomb and sister-in-law, Bernice Dennis also preceded Virgil in death. Family was at the core of everything for Virgil, and he will forever be missed by his seven grandchildren, Alexandria and Shanta' Tarver, Byron Virgil. Dennis and Denzel Irvin, Kaylyn and Raymond Adams Jr.; sister-in-law, Bernice Johnson and Judge Willie G. Lipscomb Jr. was also a dedicated brother-in-law and friend. Virgil forever gently touched the lives of nieces, nephews, cousins and so many friends. He accepted Christ as his savior at an early age, and was baptized as a young man at Antioch Baptist Church in Waterloo. Virgil served as a Trustee at Hartford Memorial Baptist Church in Detroit. Virgil was a tireless advocate for people from all walks of life; under his leadership the United Way of Detroit became one of the largest in the country. Virgil worked shoulder to shoulder with his volunteers, staff and community doing the right thing for the children and families in Detroit. His work over the years impacted many all over the country. Carr served as United Way President and CEO at the United Way of Chicago (1985-1993). Virgil served as President and CEO at Family Services of Detroit and Wayne County, and United Charities of Chicago in addition to leading agencies in St. Louis, Omaha, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Other affiliations include Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, member of the Chicago Druids, member of the Oxford Estates (Farmington Hills) and Oak Haven neighborhood association in Bronson, Michigan. Virgil earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from Iowa State University (Ames. Iowa) and a Master of Social Work degree from Washington University (St. Louis, MO). He was honored as a distinguished Alumni for both Universities. Mr. Carr was the first member of his family to attend college, setting a precedence and continued legacy for generations to follow. Virgil H. Carr was a humble man, who walked the talk of volunteerism by personally serving, as a volunteer and member on numerous boards and commissions: Chairman of the Arts League of Michigan Board of Trustees, the Detroit Civic Executives Committee, the Cultural Arts Committee of the City of Detroit; Michigan Nonprofit Research Program; the George Warren Brown School of Social Work National Council at Washington University (St. Louis); the Board of Visitors at Wayne State University School of Social Work, the Board of Visitors at Indiana University, Member of the Board of Iowa State University Board of Regents. Virgil was a man of many talents. His focus and determination enabled him to forever impact and lend a hand to those less fortunate. His life is an example of dedication, to helping others and his unrelenting compassion has forever changed how children and families receive services in Detroit and around the county. Doing the right thing was his guiding principal in every aspect of his life. The Virgil H. Carr Legacy fund has been established in memory of Virgil Carr, who will be long remembered as a great community champion. Thank you for taking time from your busy schedule to discuss the Southeastern Michigan program coordinator representative from United Way Community Services to ConnectMichigan Alliance (CMA). The following is an articulation of the items we discussed: 1. The Southeastern Michigan Program Coordinator will report directly to you or your group vice president and we will contract with your office for that person's services. 2. The Program Coordinator will spend a maximum of one day per week in the CMA Lansing Office interacting with the Lansing Program Coordinator and other CMA Partner Program representatives. That person will be expected to attend statewide volunteer conferences sponsored by CMA or one of its partners. 3. While in the Lansing Office the Southeastern Michigan Program Coordinator will report directly to me. That reporting relationship will be focused on statewide program activities only. All employee and work related issues, such as evaluations, performance appraisals and work place benefits will be within the purview of United Way Community Services. The Southeastern Michigan Program Coordinator will be considered a contract employee to CMA. 4. CMA will cover up to 50% of the Program Coordinator's salary and travel expenses to CMA or Partner activities. All travel expenses must be approved by you, or your group vice president, or me. 5. CMA will provide office space in the Lansing Office for the Southeastern Michigan Program Coordinator. 6. The Southeastern Michigan Program Coordinator position will be filled in late May or June of 2003. If we do not begin to receive substantial payment of current pledges, the creation of the position might be pushed back until July of 2003 to parallel the 2003/2004 Fiscal Year Budget. We will keep you informed on our fundraising activities. Virgil, you and I will have time to refine the job description. However, simply stated, it will be this Coordinator's responsibility to coordinate current programs between Southeastern Michigan and the State which might have some synergistic relationship. Moreover that Coordinator will insure that all newly created programs reflect the ongoing needs of Southeastern Michigan and the State of Michigan. Vivian and others were kind enough to let me know of your efforts, and I am very grateful for your consideration. I also wanted to share some great news concerning the ConnectMichigan Alliance (CMA). As you may recall from our conversation last summer, CMA is a cuttingedge initiative designed to provide long-term support for the thousands of people who volunteer daily in communities all across Michigan. We do this by bringing together the resources, expertise and leadership of Michigan's premiere statewide volunteer support organizations. John S. Lore, formerly with the Sisters of St. Joseph Health System, has agreed to take on the leadership reigns of the CMA and has been actively involved in moving our vision forward. John is a leader in the nonprofit sector and has a good deal of experience in helping grow innovative organizations. We are very excited about his appointment as President and CEO. As you know, the CMA Campaign is unique, not only because of the creative collaboration of the State's premiere volunteer oriented nonprofits, but also because of the innovative public/private partnership. The CMA will do its great work well into the future due to a $20 million permanent fund we are building with the help of a challenge grant from the State of Michigan and the private sector funds we have raised as a result. Our timing for this unveiling is April 29 -30, 2002 at our Volunteerism SuperConference in Lansing. This biennial event is our State's preeminent gathering of the volunteer sector and a logical opportunity to recognize the exemplary efforts of the ConnectMichigan Alliance Campaign partners. We also hope to announce that we will be completing the final portion of the campaign as we currently have a number of key requests pending. We believe that General Motors is a vital potential partner in this endeavor and would like to encourage you to join our campaign. You have our organizational materials from our meeting last summer and I am enclosing a proposal for your consideration. We are requesting a $1 million commitment from General Motors. This is comparable to the request we made to both the Ford Motor Company Fund and the DaimlerChrysler Corporation Fund. I am excited and pleased to report that the Ford Motor Company Fund has committed $1 million to our effort. PURPOSE To brief Mr. Gillum and Ms. Dingell on the ConnectMichigan Alliance Campaign and seek his advice and assistance in forming a Big Three and Suppliers strategy as part of the corporate component of the campaign. Also, seek his advice on securing a $1 million dollar commitment from the General Motors Foundation. H. BACKGROUND The ConnectMichigan Alliance Campaign has a goal of $20 million for a statewide endowment to permanently provide support for Michigan's volunteers. The State of Michigan has offered a $10 million in the form of a challenge grant (until Nov. of 2002) toward which $2 million has been secured. The Campaign has a three-pronged strategy: Foundations—statewide the CMA is seeking $4.5-6.5 million Corporations—statewide the CMA is seeking $2.5-4 million Individuals—statewide the CMA is seeking $1.5-3 million We need to develop a strategy for the Big Three Automakers to kick off the Corporate Strategy and Daimler Chrysler is our first approach, although we do have an appointment with Rod G. from General Motors and will be targeting Ford soon. The Big Three are each being approached for a contribution of $1 million each as the lead gifts for the corporate sector to the campaign. The key will be that all of the Big Three give to the campaign. General Motors Foundation Through funding from both the GM Foundation and corporate contributions, GM supports philanthropic causes through its business sectors in the form of cash contributions ($47.4 million), in-kind donations ($15.2 million) and participation in charity events ($6.2 million). Roderick D. Gillum, serves as chairman of the GM Foundation and GM vice president for corporate relations and diversity. Ms. Dingell serves on the board of the foundation. We are seeking a leadership gift in the form of $1 million. A brief summary of GM Foundation's giving and board membership is attached. The Foundation Strategy has been formed which seeks six million and we have secured $2 million (W.K. Kellogg and C.S. Mott Foundations) toward that goal with two of three leader organizations secured. Only Kresge is remaining and will be approached at the $1 million level. �The Individuals Strategy is developing and will include prominent Southeastern Michigan residents. EVENT SCENARIO Mrs. Engler will introduce the participants and the general concept for the ConnectMichigan Alliance (i.e. that several statewide organizations are forming an endowment for volunteerism to provide support and coordination in perpetuity). After the general concept is introduced, Mrs. Engler will ask Mr. Caldwell and Mr. Monaghan to explain the scope and progress of the campaign and then Ms. Cummings Mr. Pruitt and Ms. Williams will explain how this campaign helps connect corporate philanthropy with community support through this endowment (i.e. this will provide support to the places where employees give their time talent and resources) and how Detroit will be a major focus of the resources and policy of the ConnectMichigan Alliance Board (important to emphasize that Virgil Carr is joining the board and that he and United Way Community Services are supportive of the CMA). Mrs. Engler will then ask Mr. Gillum's and Ms. Dingell's advice on approaching the General Motors Foundation for a $1,000,000 gift AND strategies for approaching Ford and Daimler Chrysler. Mr. Caldwell will leave behind the ConnectMichigan Campaign brochure and have other materials ready just in case. In preparation for any questions, an impact brief is attached that quickly explains potential impact once the fund goal is reached. �CM A Irrpaa on Michigan Summary The ConnectMichigan Alliance Campaign ensures the strength and stability of support for Michigan's volunteers. Through a $20 million endowment, the combined forces of the Michigan Campus Compact (MCC), Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC), Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA) and the Volunteer Centers of Michigan (VCM) permanently sustains and expands the "volunteer infrastructure" for which Michigan is known and heralded. All of the partners of this initiative have developed innovative approaches to working effectively on a statewide level with varied constituencies and serve as national models of best practices. Once the campaign is completed, the ConnectMichigan Alliance (CMA) begins to achieve its goal of providing avenues for every Michigan citizen to serve their community through volunteer service and civic action. This goal is met by: • • • • Providing access to a strong and healthy Volunteer Center for every Michigan resident; Having every Michigan college and university encourage citizen service & learning among its students, faculty and staff; Building strong nonprofits to meet our communities' most pressing social, charitable, economic, cultural, educational, faith-based, and civic needs; and Maximizing state and federal government resources to empower communities to address their local challenges. In creating CMA, the four founding partners, MCC, MCSC, MNA and VCM, have created a synergistic application of their services that results in a seamless delivery of support services and programs to volunteer and service-learning initiatives throughout the state. While MNA and MCSC will remain separate entities, they will share a central location with CMA, which will reduce administrative expenses and duplication of services. This arrangement, which is modeled after successful reorganization strategies in the private-for-profit sector, enhances technological capacity and customer service models of the partners. CMA is a statewide initiative. The state of Michigan provided a $10 million challenge grant ($1: $1) toward this initiative. The G S. Mott Foundation and the W. K. Kellogg Foundation each responded to the challenge with lead gifts of $1 million. The remaining $8 million will be developed over the next twelve months through multiple-year pledges and one-time gifts. �What will be the impact? Challenge: Currently, many Michigan citizens are unable to access a volunteer center— places where our individuals and organizations work to match volunteer opportunities with the right individual. Only 54 Michigan counties are currently served by a Volunteer Center. CMA Goal: Increase Access to Volunteer/Civic Engagement Initiatives through Volunteer Centers for All Michigan Citizens Method: Bolster the forces of the Volunteer Centers of Michigan through increased membership, outreach services and site development activities in a substantially different way than could be supported by a dues only supported organization. Impact: All of Michigan's 83 counties will be served by a local Volunteer Center and thereby providing universal access for every Michigan citizen to serve. Challenge: Volunteer Centers have limited access to fund advancement professionals. Goal: Increase Long-term Financial Capacity of Local Volunteer Centers Method: Provide training and technical assistance to Volunteer Centers and their boards in the areas of nonprofit best practices, fundraising, and board development. Impact: Local Volunteer Centers will become financially viable nonprofit organizations through the provision of technical assistance in the development of annual fund advancement plans, and enhanced efforts to build local endowments. Challenge: Accessibility to volunteer opportunities and support is limited by the strength and depth of leadership in a community. Often leadership involves the same pool of volunteers and leaders who either move on or "burn out," leaving the organization without strong and long term support. Goal: Increase Access to Professional Development Opportunities for Staff and Boards of Volunteer-based Nonprofits to Deepen the Leadership in a Community. Method: Support a regional network of training and technical assistance providers than can deliver high quality services at a reasonable cost to local volunteer-based organizations. Impact: Local organization will have a more skilled and dedicated volunteer base because of increased access to regional professional development workshops and seminars �Challenge: Nonprofits and volunteer-based organizations have been unable to stay ahead of emerging trends due to their inaccessibility to technical assistance and financial resources. Goal: Improve the Quality of Life in Every Michigan Comrnunity with Improved Nonprofits— the Engines of Civic Engagement in Local Communities Method: Provide grants, conferences and meeting opportunities to local nonprofits to strategically develop long-term solutions to community problems using service and volunteerism as strategies. Impact: Local organizations -will have access to resources necessary to convene local partners in the development of market-specific programming that encourages youth volunteerism, family volunteerism, rural business volunteer councils, and urban corporate volunteer councils. Challenge: Citizenship, giving, civic engagement and an the ethic of giving back are not the indoctrinating principles our society's institutions and communities instill as they once did. New ways need to be found to instill these values. Goal: Increase the Capacity for Personal and Educational Success of Children and Adolescents Method: Highlight service-learning as a viable and valuable teaching methodology with students, teachers and parents through school partnerships, after-school programs, teacher in-services. Impact: Local Volunteer Centers will develop service-learning and civic engagement programming promoting participation of children in grades K-12. Challenge: Only thirty-five of the state's post-secondary educational institutions have demonstrated their commitment to promoting more civically engaged students, faculty and administrators by committing to the Michigan Campus Compact. Goal: Increase the Capacity for Success and Community Involvement of Young Adults Entering the Workforce. Method: Recruit more higher education chief executives to join the Campus Compact and provide increased services and resources to faculty and students. Impact: Michigan Campus Compact (MCC) will increase service learning and civic engagement programming to reach sixty-five post-secondary educational institutions. Challenge: A number of events, programs and activities are conducted around the state to promote volunteerism, but they are scattered and not universally supported in every Michigan community. Goal: Improve the Quality of Life in Communities Throughout Michigan while Demonstrating and Promoting the Power of Volunteerism. �Method: Develop a state calendar of national service days which are highlighted, promoted and coordinated throughout the ConnectMichigan Alliance. Impact: State level and local organizations will have increased capacity to engage all of Michigan's local communities in civic engagement programming that includes, but is not limited to, America's Promise, Make A Difference Day, National Volunteer Week, and Youth Service Day. Challenge: The tools and terms used to describe the effective means of volunteer community problem solving are not understood and therefore insufficiently supported. Goal: Increase Visibility of the Positive Impacts of Service-Learning, Civic Engagement and Volunteerism Method: Devote human and financial resources toward improving promotional materials, media and access to media markets for ConnectMichigan Alliance and the field of nonprofits and volunteer-based organizations. Michigan Fundraising Strategy Notes: In addition to reaffirming what is commonly known about Grand Rapids (specifically, that its philanthropic interests are regional in nature), PS explained the unique stewardship that occurs within Grand Rapids specifically and that even within that community, only those who reside in Grand Rapids are considered true members of the community. Most notable examples of this are Bob & Judy Hooker who now reside (a good portion of the time) outside of Michigan. Any message must be tailored to keeping the good things going in Grand Rapids and demonstrating how CMA will provide a continuous level of support into the future. The investments need to show that the money donated is working in Grand Rapids for Grand Rapids. Transition in leadership at the state level was discussed as a possible justification for developing the CMA. PS interests are primarily focused on helping the Englers since Mrs. Engler asked him. While receptive, Peter Secchia clearly did not understand what the CMA would do for Grand Rapids and was not receptive to the concept until we were able to target a specific example of how one of the partners in the CMA was impacting a component of the community (discussed the Creston Neighborhood AmeriCorps program that MCSC currently funds). More examples like this will have to be crafted before seeking funding in this community. Peter Secchia agreed to help by hosting a lunch of the potential donors from the Grand Rapids area, but said that �Peter Secchia March 01 Report.doc Page 2 of 2 it would have to appear as though Governor and Mrs. Engler were making the ask (i.e. be their event).
