Michigan Nonprofit SuperConference 2005
Michigan Nonprofit SuperConference 2005: Sustaining Mission is June 13, 14 and 15, 2005 at
the Hyatt Regency, Dearborn. Features include:
•
a June 13 preconference day co-sponsored by the Association of Fundraising
Professionals, Greater Detroit Chapter
•
Outstanding keynote speakers: long-time White House bureau chief Helen Thomas;
Council on Foundations chair Emmett Carson; and author Paul Light.
•
over 40 foundation representatives for roundtable discussions
•
47 workshops on nonprofit management, fund development, volunteer administration,
advocacy, national service programs, communications and other important topics
•
resource exhibits, book store and cyber cafe'
•
networking, networking, networking ...
Regional Capacity Building
Planning is underway for capacity building events in communities around the state. These events will
coordinate the efforts of a number of MNA initiatives, including promoting grass roots advocacy, rolling
out the Pdnciples and Practices for Nonprofit Excellence, promoting regional collaborations and
expanding MNA membership out-state.
A one-day nonprofit conference is planned for the Upper Peninsula in the fall, in cooperaiion with the
Great Lakes Center for Youth Development. Regional one day events to being together local capacity
building resources while rolling out the Principles and Practices for Nonprofit Excellence are planned for
at least four communities. Advocacy workshops are scheduled for four communities.

�Local Learning Series
A full schedule of workshops is scheduled for spring, again cosponsored by the Capital Region
,

Community Foundation and the Capital Area United Way. As usual, fund development workshops are
expected to draw the largest audiences.
Indiana University Fund Raising School
Indiana University Fund Raising School classes are moving to the University of Michigan-Dearborn
training facility. Classes for 2005 will include Principles and Techniques, Planned Giving, Major Gifts,
and Grant Writing. A new relationship with the regional AFP chapter should help with marketing.
Michigan MSO Network
The Michigan MSO Network has added a number of new members: New Detroit; Michigan Association
of Community Arts Agencies; Nonprofit Facilities Center; Great Lakes Nonprofit Institute and Great
Lakes Center for Youth Development. The March 8 meeting focused on strategies to improve services to
faith-based organizations.

MNA Financial Statements for the Month Ending January 31, 2005
In reviewing the financial statements for the month ending January 31, 2005, I felt the following
information would be helpful. As a reminder, the MNA financial statements have been modified to
reflect the new laws governing nonprofit financial reporting.
STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL POSITION
The information below is the balance as January 31, 2005 for the Statement of Financial Position.
Assets
Pettv Cash, Checking and Money Market Investment Account: +68,242. Reconciled balances as
ofJanuary 31,2005.
Section 125 Checking Account: + 391. Flexible Spending Account for dependent/childcare and
un-reimbursed medical expenses. Reconciled balance as of January 31, 2005.
Healthier Plan Checking Account: +4,130. Healthier Plan Account for un-reimbursed medical
related expenses for the staff who participate in the medical insurance benefit plan. Reconciled
balance as ofJanuary 31,2005.
Accounts Receivable- Conference Registration: + 105. Amount billed to organizations and
individuals for registration fees to attend the Volunteerism SuperConference 2004 event.
Remittance is anticipated to occur within the next month.
Accounts Receivable- Conference Bookstore: +20. Amount billed to organizations and
individuals for book sales at the Volunteerism SuperConference 2004 bookstore. Remittance is
anticipated to occur with the next month.
Accounts Receivable- CMA: +33,554. Amount billed to ConnectMichigan Alliance for
expenditures which includes salaries, fringe benefit costs and operational costs. Remittance is
anticipated to occur in February of2005.
Accounts Receivable- MNA Dues: +5,155. Amount billed for MNA membership renewals for
December of2004 and January of2005. Remittance is anticipated to occur within the next month.
Accounts Receivable- C.S. Molt Foundation- MNLI: +40,000. A grant was awarded on May 1,
2004 in the amount of $75,000 from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation for the Leadership
Institute Project. This grant will be paid in two increments. The first payment was remitted in
May of2004. The remaining payment is anticipated to occur in May of2005.

�Accounts Receivable- W. K. Kellogg Foundation: + 150,000. A grant was awarded on
September I, 2004 in the amount of$150,000 from theW. K. Kellogg Foundation for the MNA
Strategic Fund. Remittance is anticipated to occur during the month of March 2005.
Accounts Receivable- Classified Ads: +8,259. Amount billed to organizations for advertising of
positions and etc. in our MNA Websites and Links Newsletter. Remittance is anticipated to occur
within the next few months.
Accounts Receivable- Sponsors: +500. Amount billed for the conference sponsors. Remittance
is anticipated to occur within the next month.
Prepaid Accounts: +25,147. Prepaid insurance, postage, copier, conference and training deposits
that will be expensed as the expenditures occur.
Liabilities and Net Assets
Due for Copy Overage: +448. This represents an overage owed to Hasselbring Clark for our six
month copier maintenance contract. The over/under costs of the copier maintenance contract is
billed every February and July.
Accounts Payable: + 11,780. This balance consists of operational expenditures to be remitted in
November of2004. The liability consists of some contract payments and other general operational
expenditures.
Other current liabilities: + 31,855. The accrued vacation, unemployment tax liability,
withholdings and sales tax payable are expensed as the expenditure occurs.
Deferred Revenue - Training: +I ,500. This line item represents prepayment for the 2005 Distance
Learning Agreement with Michigan Center for Rural Health that is to be allocated to revenue in
July of2005.
Unrestricted: +69,064. This account is the offset for the closeout of the Revenue over Expense
account at fiscal year end.
Temp. Restricted MNLI- C. S. Mott Grant: +35,346. The Charles Stewart Molt Foundation
awarded a $75,000 two year grant in May of2004. The expenditures for the Michigan Nonprofit
Leadership Institute programs are anticipated to occur throughout the fiscal year.
Temp. Restricted- MNA Dues: +81,658. This balance is the unearned amount of member dues
representing, for each member, I/ 12th of the annual dues payment.
Temp. Restricted MPPI- Aspen Institute: +1,173. The Aspen Institute awarded a $31,775 grant
in July of2002 and a $27,933 grant in July of2003 to support the Michigan Nonprofit Research
Program. The remaining expenditures for the Michigan Nonprofit Research Program are
anticipated to occur throughout the fiscal year.
Revenue over Expenses: +143,762. This is the balance from the year to date revenue over
expense statement.

�STATEMENT OF ACTIVITIES
The infmmation below is based on year to date (YTD) variance which is detailed in the second to
the last column of the Statement of Activities.
Revenue
General Contributions: <256>. General, individual and strategic contributions are behind
projections due to equal monthly budget allocations.
Interest & Dividends: + 179. Interest and dividends are ahead of budget projections due to interest
earned on the MNA Checking and Money Market Account funds held at Standard Federal Bank.
Grants and Contracts- Strategic: <10,684>. These line items in total are behind budget
projections due to pending grants and contracts. We anticipate these proposals to be awarded
within the next few months.
Restricted Grants- MNLI: <50,000>. This line item represents a budgeted grant award that was
awarded in May of2004 from The Charles Stewart Molt Foundation in the amount of$75,000.
This two year grant was awarded to support the Michigan Nonprofit Leadership Institute programs.
Existing Grants- MNLI: +39,654. This line item is ahead of budget projections due to a grant
award in May of 2004 that was budgeted in the Restricted Grants- MNLI. These funds were
transferred from the Net Assets - Temporarily Restricted MNLI - C. S. Matt Foundation. All of the
restricted foundation funds were transferred to cover budgeted expenditures.
Restricted Grants- MPPI: <49, 170>. This line item is behind budget projections due to pending
grants and contracts. This line item also represents grant awards from the W. K. Kellogg
Foundation and The Aspen Institute. We anticipate the pending proposals to be awarded within the
next few months.
Existing Grants- MPPI: +18,190. This line item is ahead of budget projections due to equal
monthly budget allocations of expenditures for Michigan Public Policy Initiative programs.
Membership Dues: <21,232>. MNA memberships are behind budget projections due to equal
monthly budget allocations with the anticipation of an increase in membership applications.
Consulting: <43,170>. This line item is behind budget projections due to equal monthly budget
allocations. MNA continues to seek consulting opportunities.
Program Fees: <31,566>. This line item is behind budget projections due to scheduling changes
and slow remittance of budgeted training seminars for the Michigan Nonprofit Leadership
programs. These training sessions are scheduled and remittance is anticipated to occur within the
next few months.
Sponsorships Leadership Institute: <7,500>. This line item is behind projections due to
anticipation of additional MNA Directory sponsors and MNA Newsletter advertisers.
Sponsorships Conferences: +5,000. This line item is ahead of budget projections early remittance
ofthe 2005 Nonprofit Conference sponsorship.

�Sponsorships MPPI: +4,250. This line item represents additional sponsorship revenue for the
2004 Nonprofit Day event which is a program of the Michigan Public Policy Initiative.
Sponsorships Nonprofit Outreach: <4,585>. This line item is behind projections due to
anticipation of additional MNA Directory sponsors and MNA Newsletter advertisers.
Publications: <3,757>. This line item is behind projections due to equal monthly budget allocation
of the Nonprofit Outreach publication sales.
Miscellaneous Income: +6,020. This line item is ahead of budget projections due to the increased
requests ofMNA member mailing disks and other various items.
HealthiER Plan Savings: +2,626. This line item represents an unbudgeted benefit savings
program to assist in offsetting the rising cost of healthcare insurance premiums.
Expenses (negative expense items reflect a positive impact on the bottom line.)
Salaries and Benefits: <15,346>. These line items represent savings due to equal monthly budget
allocations.
Liabilitv Insurance: <166>. This line item represents budget savings due to equal monthly budget
allocations with anticipation of an increase in our D&O Insurance coverage cost.
Contract Services: <29,556>. This line item is under budget projections due to scheduled
changes in the leadership and training seminar consultant contracts for Michigan Nonprofit
Leadership Institute (MNLI) and the Training and Technical Assistance programs. These
programs are anticipated to occur throughout the fiscal year.
Office Expenses: <32,391>. This line item is under budget due to savings in several expense
categories with the anticipation of additional funding sources. The expenditures are anticipated to
occur as funding becomes available. Overall, MNA staff has searched for alternate ways to keep
expenditures low which results in an overall savings.
Printing I Publications: <27,388>. This line item is under budget due to expenditures anticipated
for the printing of the MNLI, NPO and MPPI publications and brochures. Expenditures are
budgeted to occur throughout the fiscal year.
Meeting Expenses: <16,256>. This line item is under budget due to savings in several expense
categories that are anticipated to occur throughout the fiscal year. The largest of the savings is for
anticipated costs of the MNLI programs.
Travel Expenses: <15,019>. This line item is under budget projections due to equal monthly
budget allocation for expenditures anticipated to occur throughout the fiscal year.
Grants and Sponsorships: <1,667>. This line item represents budget savings due to equal monthly
budget allocations to award grants and sponsorship of other events throughout the fiscal year.
Miscellaneous: <142>. This line item is behind projections due to equal monthly budget
allocations to absorb the unforeseen costs.

Welcome and Call to Order
The meeting was called to order by chair, E. Blews, at 12:00 p.m.
2.
Approval of the Minutes of December 16,2004
A motion to approve the minutes of the December 16, 2003 meeting was made by C.
Bloodworth and seconded by K. Hall. Motion carried.
3.
Chair's Rep01t
E. Blews thanked all of the board members present for taking time out of their busy
schedules to attend an all-day retreat.
E. Blews noted that one of the issues for today is the ongoing discussion and deliberation
of the Board about the state budget structural deficit and the need for revenue restoration
and revenue enhancement. The MNA Public Policy and Executive Committee had been
delegated the duty to finalize the details. E. Blews reminded the Board that three position
statements were already adopted by the Board and the MNA Executive Committee
adopted the following four position statements and are recommending them to the Board
for adoption as follows:
I. The Michigan Nonprofit Association supports an increase in the State
cigarette tax.
2. The Michigan Nonprofit Association supports an increase in the mark-up
applied to liquor sales.
3. The Michigan Nonprofit Association supports modernizing the State Sales and Use
�Sr. Kostielney further reported that the Nominating Committee recommends that the
MNA Board of Trustees approve the designations of the following Association Trustees
to the MNA Board of Trustees Class of2007:
N. Charles Anderson, Council of Michigan Urban Leagues
E. Blews, Jr., Association of Independent Colleges & Universities of Michigan
T. Mathieu, Michigan Community Action Agency Association
D. Mikula, Michigan Association of Community Arts Agencies
D. Price, Michigan Association of Rehabilitation Organizations
S. Herman, Michigan Jewish Conference
A motion to approve nominations of the above individuals as Association Trustees
to the MNA Board of Trustees Class of 2007 was made by Sr. Kostielney and
seconded by A. Marston. Motion carried.

Finance Committee Repott
P. Casale provided a brief overview of the December 31, 2003 Financial Statements. She
noted that the information was reviewed and approved by the Finance Committee.
A motion to approve the Financial Statements for the Month Ending December 31,
2003 was made by D. Price and seconded by G. Smith. Motion carried.

Adjournment
A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by D. Algra and seconded by T. Bailey.
Motion carried.
The meeting was adjourned at 12:20 p.m.

Nonprofit Outreach Report
June 15, 2004
IMNA Publications
The 2004 Michigan Nonprofit Compensation & Benefit Survey has arrived. Several
Management Support Organizations throughout the state assisted with the project by
encouraging organizations to participate in the survey. The Jobnson Center for
Philanthropy at Grand Valley State University collected data and prepared the results.
The new edition includes a greater number of participating organizations from more
counties and includes an increase in employment positions. The survey is available for
purchase online in the MNA bookstore.
The latest edition of Michigan Giving and Volunteering has been released. The study
highlights key findings from a 2003 survey of Michigan residents on their levels of
giving and volunteering. Information on the scope of foundation giving and details on
state and national community service programs are also included. The publication is
available on the MNA Web site and free printed copies can be obtained by calling the
MNAoffice.
!Membership Update
Membership numbers declined slightly this past quarter. The Volunteerism
SuperConference did not attract as many new members as in previous years and
economic conditions have impacted renewal rates as well. The new fiscal year will begin
with a strong focus on membership recruitment and retention. New staff member Heather
Travis will aid this effot1 by devoting part of her time to membership and nonprofit
outreach.
\MNA WebSite
The MNA Web site will soon have a new look with many new features. We anticipate the
launch of the new site to be later this month.
I Classified Advertising
Classified advertising increased this past quatter both in terms of revenue and number of
nonprofit job postings. The feedback from customers indicates that the ads have been

Michigan Nonprofit Leadership Institute
The third class of Emerging Leaders graduated March 26, 2004. Feedback from students and mentors was
overwhelmingly positive. A fourth class of Emerging Leaders is being recruited for classes to begin
August 26. This series will include a new segment on program evaluation.

The first class of Foundations of Excellence is scheduled to begin August 30. This will be a
comprehensive preparation and planning experience for executive directors with less than three years
experience. Over nine months, participants will experience six two-day seminars focused on
organizational excellence; will conduct an organizational assessment in partnership with board leadership;
and will be engaged in peer learning and dialogue related to sector issues through Learning Circle
participation.
The Principles and Practices for Nonprofit Excellence in Michigan is currently available in a draft form,
with public comment being taken through July 15 through MNA's web site. Significant feedback has
been received through the MSO network and the patiicipants at Volunteerism SuperConference 2004. The
Principles and Practices for Mission Achievement Assessment Tool (f01merly Hallmarks for Mission
Achievement) has been refined for consistency with the Principles and Practices for Nonprofit Excellence,
and will be field tested this summer. Final versions of these documents and the Basic Infrastructure
Checklist will be available for public distribution in September 2004.
Volunteerism SuperConference 2004
The planning committee for Volunteerism SuperConference 2004 was chaired by Chris Nelson, Michigan
Association of United Ways. The conference was held May 24 and 25 in Grand Rapids under the theme
Strengthening Communities through Service. The goal was to attract at least 600 patiicipants. Attendance
fell slightly below that with at least 560 individuals participating in two days of learning, networking and
renewal.
Evaluations from participants were overwhelmingly positive with highest marks going to customer service
provided by staff and volunteers, talks by Arianna Huffington and Susan Ellis, and the variety of learning
provided by more than 50 workshops.

MNA Financial Statements for the Month Ending April 30, 2004
In reviewing the financial statements for the month ending April 30, 2004, I felt the following
information would be helpful. As a reminder, the MNA financial statements have been modified
to reflect the new laws goveming nonprofit financial reporting.
STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL POSITION
The information below is the balance as April30, 2004 for the Statement ofFinancial Position.
Assets
Pettv Cash. Checking and Money Market Investment Account: + 186,523. Reconciled balances
as of April 30, 2004.
Section 125 Checking Account: +5,420. Flexible Spending Account for dependent/childcare
and un-reimbursed medical expenses. Reconciled balance as of April 30, 2004.
Healthier Plan Checking Account: + 1,900. Healthier Plan Account for un-reimbursed medical
related expenses for the staff who participate in the medical insurance benefit plan. Reconciled
balance as of April 30, 2004.
Accounts Receivable- Conference Registration: +535. Amount billed to organizations and
individuals for registration fees to attend the Nonprofit Day 2003 event. Remittance is
anticipated to occur within the next few months.
Accounts Receivable - Conference Bookstore: +82. Amount billed to organizations and
individuals for book sales at the Grantmakers Grantseekers 2003 bookstore. Remittance is
anticipated to occur with the next month.
Accounts Receivable - CMA: +28,360. Amount billed to ConnectMichigan Alliance for
expenditures which includes salaries, fringe benefit costs and operational costs. Remittance is
anticipated to occur in May of 2004.
Accounts Receivable- MNA Dues: +3,400. Amount billed for MNA membership renewals in
the months of March and April of 2004. Remittance is anticipated to occur within the next few
months.
Accounts Receivable- Classified Ads: +2,599. Amount billed to organizations for advertising
of positions and etc. in our MNA Websites and Links Newsletter. Remittance is anticipated to
occur within the next few months.

�Interest & Dividends: <263>. Interest and dividends are behind budget projections due to lower
interest rates on the Standard Federal checking and money market investment account balances.
Grants and Contracts- Strategic: <14,500>. These line items in total are behind budget
projections due to pending grants and contracts. We do not anticipate any additional grant awards
this fiscal year.
Restricted Grants- Training and Technical Assistance: +4,000. This line item represents an
unbudgeted grant award from CenterPoint Institute, Inc. for the "Venture Fund for Engaging
Communities of Color."
Restricted Grants- MPPI: <82,567>. This line item is behind budget projections due to pending
grants and contracts. We anticipated these proposals to be awarded throughout the fiscal year.
Existing Grants- MPPI: <16,919>. This line item is behind budget projections due to equal
monthly budget allocations of expenditures for Michigan Public Policy Initiative programs.
Membership Dues: <8,100>. MNA memberships are behind budget projections due to equal
monthly budget allocations with the anticipation of an increase in membership applications.
Consulting: +17,416. This line item is ahead of projections due to additional consulting
opportunities that took place throughout the fiscal year.
Program Fees: <67,065>. This line item is behind budget projections due to timely remittance
ofVolunteerism SuperConference 2004 registration to be held on May 24th and 25th.
Sponsorships Conferences: <28,571>. This line item is behind projections due to anticipation of
payments from sponsors for the Volunteerism SuperConference 2004. We anticipate sponsorship
payments to be received within the next few months.
Sponsorships Training and Technical Assistance: +6,000. This line item is ahead of budget
projections due to a DTE Energy Foundation sponsorship for the MNA Emerging Leader
program.
Sponsorships MPPI: <1,500>. This line item is behind projections due to anticipation of
additional Giving and Volunteering sponsorship payments.
Sponsorships Nonprofit Outreach: <5,198>. This line item is behind projections due to
anticipation of additional MNA Directory sponsors and MNA Links advmiisers.
Publications: <5,075>. This line item is behind budget projections due to equal monthly budget
allocations of the Nonprofit Outreach publication sales.
Miscellaneous Income: + 1,015. This line item is behind projections due to the anticipated sales
ofMNA member mailing disks and other various items.
HealthiER Plan Savings: +2,666. This line item represents an unbudgeted benefit savings
program to assist in offsetting the rising cost ofhealthcare insurance premiums.

�Introduction
This meeting will provide the opportunity to come to agreement on who you are, as an association and
where you are going.
This will require that you address some key questions:
A. What is the purpose, or mission, ofMNA?
A. What direction, or vision, should we take?
A. What are the milestones, or vision priorities, we need to accomplish to reach that vision?
A. What are the guiding principles that we live by and that govern our behavior with each other
and our members and partners?
As valuable as the answers to these four questions are, equally valuable is the dialogue, discussion, and
subsequent agreement which occurs in the process. This discussion will become the very foundation for the
writing of goals and actions in your strategic planning process.
Why not move directly to the writing of goals and actions? Many organizations do begin their strategic
planning with the writing of goals and actions. But they find themselves doing nothing more than
incremental planning: more of what they have already done in the past The danger of incremental planning
is the real possibility that the goals and actions do not lead toward the vision, or worse yet, might lead the
organization in the wrong direction.
It is not enough to do things right; the members of your organization must also determine which things are
right.
Why complete a Mission?
Without a sense of purpose stakeholders in MNA are quite literally lost Mission provides that sense of
purpose. The aim of mission is to
A. clarify purpose by guiding your organization, board, staff and members
A. prioritize where everyone spends time and energy
A. identify and clarify where not to spend time and energy
A. communicate to stakeholders the purpose- why MNA exists
There are benefits to your organization when there is a shared understanding of its mission:
• You will make a habit of focusing on what is trnly important.
• Effective leadership results when the main function of leadership includes defiuing the mission.
• You can prioritize what problems you need to address and develop a more complete
understanding of the possible solutions, before choosing the most effective solution.
• Your agreement on purpose allows for conflict resolution.
• Your organization states its philosophy and values, which help shape the goals, plans, and
actions to reach the vision.
• The mission you create is your foundation for establishing your vision.
• A statement of mission is a powerful means of social control to the extent that MNA's purpose
is socially justified and virtuous.
�Why complete a Vision?
While mission provides a sense of purpose, vision provides a sense of direction. Without a vision, your
organization may not have enough direction to know how to fulfill the mission. Whereas, the mission
clarifies your purpose, or why you exist, the vision clarifies what you should look like in the future. If your
organization lived by your mission alone, you might end up somewhere you never intended to go. If your
organization never anticipated the future and dreamed of what could be, you might never change.
There are benefits to MNA when there is a shared understanding of its vision:
•
The vision, to the extent that it is shared and agreed-upon among all members of your
organization, allows you to be excited and enthusiastic about what is yet to happen within the
organization.
•
One of the critical functions of leadership includes defining the mission and a vision for the
future that your organization is striving to achieve.
•
The vision conveys to you what is expected, especially in the absence of constant, direct
supervision.
•
Vision brings clarity in the planning and implementing of daily activities.
•
The vision can be used in problem-solving to select opportunities for improvement.
Why complete VlSion Priorities?
The moment you agree upon your vision, you are faced with the distance between your agreed-upon
mission -today' s reality- and your vision for the future. Within that distance, there are some large
objectives or milestones that must be accomplished to reach the vision. These milestones can be identified,
and once identified, become the priorities that your organization can focus on to reach your vision. These
vision priorities fall somewhere between today's reality and your vision for the future. Some vision
priorities may be 2 years out and others may be closer to 5 years out.
If you only describe the vision and don't identify vision priorities (milestones toward to the vision), then the
vision becomes too nebulous and too far away to accomplish. By identifying the vision priorities, the tasks
become more achievable and manageable, and somewhat more urgent.
Why complete Guiding Principles?
All organizations have a culture: a set of shared assumptions, beliefs, and practices about people and work,
which define the nature of that organization's workplace. Your organization's culture leads to common
work habits and interaction patterns. Culture is one of the most powerful and tangible characteristics that
detennines the overall capability of an organization.
Shared and common guiding principles identify the values that an organization embraces as part of its
foundation, and that actions of individual employees affect not only the exercise of rights by the employee,
but implied rights of the organization. In addition, written guiding principles provide a basis for
COIWllunication and education, insuring that everyone in the organization shares a common definition of
these values.
Guiding principles ideally promote a positive business environment. Most organizations today compete or
are affected by a changing regional environment. While your mission and vision create the energy for
meeting the changing needs of your customers, the multitude of decisions and choices that you must make
along the road towardthe vision must be guided by your organization's principles. Principles help both
leaders and members make the tough choices that will occur in the pursuit of the organization's vision.

Welcome and Call To Order
E. Blews introduced T. Bailey, Executive Director, Little Traverse Conservancy, MNA's newest
Board of Trustee. He congratulated B. Orr Hill, President and CEO, Michigan Women's
Foundation, on her recent promotion. A warm round of applause followed. E. Blews
introduced K. Gable and M. Huey, graduates of the MNA Emerging Leaders program and
noted that they will present information to the Board on their experience with the program.
2.
Approval of Minutes of September 16, 2003
The minutes of the September 16, 2003 meeting were approved by D. Mikula and seconded
by Sr. M. Kostielney. Motion carried.
3.
Chair's Report
E. Blews noted that Nonprofit Day, held September 24, 2003, was a great success. He thanked R.
Collier and the MNA Public Policy Committee for their hard work on this project. E. Blews
reported that the Emerging Leaders graduation was held September 25, 2003 and was very
impressed with these leaders and the quality of the program. He noted that two important
upcoming dates are the March 16,2004 MNA Board of Trustees retreat at Brook Lodge, Augusta,
MI and June 15, 2004 MNA Board of Trustees meeting at theW. K. Kellogg Foundation in Battle
Creek., MI.
E. Blews stated that MNA continues to operate efficiently, passionately and effectively. He
extended everyone the warmest greeting and best wishes for a New Year.

Finance Committee Report
M. Flanagan reviewed the Financial Statements for month ending October 31, 2003. S. Singh
noted that as of October 31,2003 MNA was $51,000 ahead of budget.
A motion was made by M. Flanagan to approve the Financial Statement for month ending
October 31, 2003 and was seconded by D. Caldwell. Motion carried.
S. Singh next reported that MNA had been challenged with continuing to provide I 00% paid
medical and dental benefits for staff. With the health care costs rising at 17% to 18% every year in
recent years MNA has had to make the decision to pay the increases, or reduce the benefits, or
both. The HealthiER Plan is a Section 105 Plan that shifts most or all of its direct premium
expense into a Cafeteria Plan with employees receiving tax-free reimbursement for eligible heath
care expenses. MNA will also promote The HealthiER Plan as a MNA member benefit. It was
requested that MNA provide a presentation on the HealthiER Plan at another Board meeting.
A motion was made by M. Flanagan to approve and adopt the HealthiER Health Plan and
C. Bloodworth seconded the motion. Motion carried.
M. Flanagan reported that the MNA Finance Committee recommended opening a HealthiER
Plan checking account at Comerica Banl<.
A motion was made by M. Flanagan to approve opening a HealthiER Plan checking account
at Comerica Bank and D. Seaman seconded the motion. Motion carried.
5.
President's Report
S. Singh reported that MNA's current strategic plan ends July I, 2004. A progress report will be
presented to the MNA Board of Trustees at the June 15 meeting. The March 16 Board of Trustees
meeting will be a full day retreat at the Brook Lodge, Augusta, Michigan, to develop the 20042007 MNA Strategic Plan. A pre-planning meeting took place at the Executive Committee
meeting on December 10. S. Waechter, Cornerstone Consulting Associates, facilitated the meeting
and reviewed the first 12 years ofMNA's history including, the start-up years, evolving association
years and mature association years. S. Singh also noted that MNA would be providing hotel and
dinner information for March 15 for MNA Board members that wish to come a night early.
At this point, S. Singh asked K. Gable and M. Huey to provide the Emerging Leader overview to
the Board. K. Gable reported that she graduated from the first MNA Emerging Leaders class and
M. Huey graduated from the second class. They gave a PowerPoint presentation on how the
classes affected them and the personal and professional development that they gained.
6.
ConnectMichigan Alliance Report
J. Lore reported that thanks to recent generous donations from Comcast Corporation and
supplemental gifts of$150,000 each from C. S. Mort Foundation, theW. K. Kellogg Foundation,
as well as the General Motors Corporation, there is only $43,000 remaining to raise for the
ConnectMichigan Alliance Campaign. J. Lore said there are requests out to the Gilmore, Lear and
Dalton Foundations. He noted due to the December 31, 2003 timeframe, there is not any time left
to send out additional proposals and that if any of the Board members know of anyone that might
make a donation, please let him know. At this point, D. Caldwell pledged $1,000 to the CMA
campaign. J. Lore said everything looks extremely positive for a successful end to the campaign.

�S. Singh noted that it would be appropriate for anyone who wished to do so to dedicate his or her
MNA Strategic Fund gift to the CMA Campaign. A warm round of applause followed for the great
effect that has taken place in the near completion of the CMA Campaign.
7.
Fund Advancement Committee Report
C. Bloodworth reviewed the MNA Fund Advancement Report. She noted that the short-term goal
has been to help the CMA Campaign. C. Bloodworth reviewed the programs and the potential
sponsors for each program and recognized these organizations for their past sponsorship. She noted
that additional programs would not be started until the financial support is acquired for them. S.
Singh aclmowledged the partnership with the Council of Michigan Foundations and thanked R.
Collier for opening many doors for MNA over the past several years. The Fund Advancement
Committee is working on identifYing potential funders in the Grand Rapids area for the
Volunteerism SuperConference 2004, which will be held May 24-25 at the Amway Grand Plaza.
E. Blews said that he would contact the five independent colleges in that area.
8.
Audit Committee Report
E. Blews noted the right of the Board to excuse the staff at any time during the Audit Report. (At
this time, it was noted that the Board did not indicate the need for staff to leave). A. Rosewarne
reported that the Audit Committee met December 10, 2003 and unanimously approved the audit as
presented. She turned over the report to D. Ambrose, MNA's Independent Auditor. D. Ambrose
reviewed the Independent Auditor's Report, for year ending June 30, 2003. He noted a letter to
the Board of Trustees ofMNA is included in the auditor's report, in which he indicated that he
noted no matters involving the internal control structure and its operations that he would consider
material wealmesses. D. Ambrose noted that MNA continues to work as a very efficient
organization. Sam noted that MNA has not been able to grow a long-term reserve because of the
low profit that is generated on programs and services. It was suggested that one or two ofMNA's
funders could specify their money to start a reserve fund for MNA. The best practice is a 3-6
month reserve. B. Liebold suggested a separate Board Task Force be formed for this purpose. It
was noted that during the past three years MNA's funding had been sacrificed to build CMA's
Campaign. (At this time, E. Blews noted that the Board has the right to request MNA staff to
leave if they had any other question regarding the Audit. The Board did not indicate the need for
staff to leave).
A recommendation to accept the andit report for the year ending June 30, 2003 was made by
A. Rosewarne and seconded by D. Caldwell. Motion carried.
9.
Public Policy Committee Report
E. Blews noted that E. Skene was sick and absent from the meeting. R. Collier reported that the
Public Policy Committee recommends the support of S.B. 785, which revises the procedures to
establish and issue fund-raising plates.
A motion to support the recommendation to support S.B. 785 was made by R. Collier and
seconded by D. Seaman. Motion carried.
R. Collier next reported that the Public Policy Committee urges the state to postpone the rollback
of the personal income tax scheduled for January 2004. S. Singh noted that MNA has been sending
out Action Alerts to our members to inform them of this information.

�A motion to support the recommendation to postpone the rollback of the personal income tax
schedule for January 2004 was made by R. Collier and seconded by D. Caldwell. Motion
carried.
R. Collier reported that the Public Policy Committee urges the state to fully decouple Michigao's
Estate Tax from the Federal Estate Tax. A. Marston urged the Board to adopt aod provide
educational programs in this area. Ann has materials on this subject that cao be faxed to the Board
members.
A motion to support the recommendation was made by Rob Collier and seconded by Sr.
M. Kostielney. Motion carried.
R. Collier noted that at the last Board meeting D. Mikula asked the Public Policy Committee to
look at exemptions of personal property tax for nonprofits. The Committee discussed this issue aod
are asking staff to research the issue to find the scope of this problem.
R. Collier said the Nonprofit Council for Charitable Trusts will have its first meeting on Jaouary
14, 2004 aod will be chaired by Chief Deputy Attorney General, C. Isaacs.
R. Collier reported that early next year MNA would be addressing adjusting alcohol taxes for
inflation aod the Michigao sales tax structure. E. Blews asked what the feelings of the Board were
in encouraging the priority exploration aod investigation of the issues by the staff aod Public Policy
Committee to bring back recommendations aod various opportunities. A discussion followed
regarding consumption taxes. Sr. M. Kostielney said that she feels it unduly taxes the poor aod
that taxes should not be punitive. This item will be on the agenda at the March 2004 Board
meeting.
A motion to support the recommendation was made by B. Kratchman and seconded by
D. Algra. Motion carried.
10.
Membership Committee Report
D. Mikula reported that membership is at the 768 mark which is up ao addition 50-60 members
since last year at this time. She noted that the Michigao Nonprofit Compensation & Benefit Survey
had been distributed. The Dorothy Johnson Center at Graod Valley State University is collecting
aod aoalyzing the data. Responses to the survey are slow coming in - MNA has received about 300
responses aod are looking for about 600. She requested that the Board members fill out their
surveys. D. Mikula reported that MNA would soon be accepting credit cards on the MNA web site
for membership, bookstore aod conference registration payments.
11.
Leadership and Training Committee Report
J. Moore noted that the Vo1unteerism SuperConference is May 24-25 2004, aod the Leadership
aod Training Committee report was included in the Board packet. She thanked C.Nelson for
chairing the Volunteerism SuperConference Committee.
12.
Other
E. Blews noted that maoy of the Board members who are involved in funding know how nice it is
to be able to report that there is 100% participation in the Strategic Fund by the Board members.

�S. Singh noted that all of the MNA staff are attending the holiday luncheon today and introduced
them individually. He said that the Board photographer is here today for anyone who wanted to
get an individual head shot.

A motion was made to adjourn the Board of Trustees meeting by D. Algra and
seconded by R. Collier. Motion carried. The meeting was adjourned at 12:05 p.m.

The Michigan Nonprofit Association Board of Trustees will meet on
Tuesday, March 16, 2004, from 8:30a.m.- 4:00p.m. at Brook Lodge in
Augusta, Michigan. Enclosed are meeting materials and directions to the
Brook Lodge.
The day will begin with a continental breakfast. The board retreat will begin
at 8:30a.m. and the MNA Board of Trustees business meeting will be held
prior to lunch. Lunch will be from 12:00 p.m.- I :00 p.m. The board retreat
will continue from 1:00 p.m. -4:00p.m.
Also, for those who will be arriving the evening of March 15, a dinner has
been planned for 8:00p.m. at the McCamly Plaza Hotel, Battle Creek,
Michigan. (Hotel reservations have been made for those who requested
them). A map is enclosed for your convenience.
If you have any questions, please contact the MNA office at 517/492-2400.

The FY 2005 state budget is facing a $1.3 billion shortfall between projected state
revenues and expected levels of spending. The Governor has proposed a mixture of
revenue enhancements and spending cuts to address the shortage.
The following describes the FY 2005 Executive Budget:
• $391 million in revenue enhancements, including detaching Michigan's estate tax
from the federal estate tax, increasing the tax on cigarettes from $1.25 to $2.00,
and an increase in the mark-up applied to liquor sales (excluding beer and wine).
• $494 million in spending cuts, including $184 million from the suspension of
county revenue sharing payments, $70 million in the Department of Community
Health, $7 6 million in employee-related savings, $65 million by eliminating needbased Michigan tuition grant financial aid for students oflimited means attending
Michigan private colleges and universities, $49 million in other agency reductions
and $50 million in School Aid Fund cuts.
• $146 million reduction in the General Fund contribution to the School Aid Fund.
• $154 million in redirection of the cigarette tax revenue to Medicaid instead of the
Rainy Day Fund.
• $64 million with the shift in the Merit Award payment scheduled.
• $40 million in other funding shifts.

As the Legislature addresses the budget shortfall, they may propose additional spending
cuts. However, the reductions in the proposed executive budget and possible additional
cuts to programs are extremely disturbing considering that state spending on arts, k-12
education, higher education, environment and natural resources, and health and human
services are already at a bare minimum. Additional funding cuts to these programs and
services will devastate the quality of life here in Michigan.
These programs are often services that the government can not or does not have the
ability to provide alone. In addition to support for individuals and municipalities, the state
makes grants to and contracts with nonprofit organizations to provide needed services for
Michigan families. Not only will proposed and possible additional cuts harm the
individuals and municipalities that rely on direct state funding, but it will also hinder if
not prevent the nonprofit community from carrying out its charitable mission. Worsening
the situation are decreasing levels offoundation and individual giving, which leave

MNA Financial Statements for the Month Ending December 31, 2003
In reviewing the financial statements for the month ending December 31, 2003, I felt the
following information would be helpful. As a reminder, the MNA fmancial statements have been
modified to reflect the new laws governing nonprofit financial reporting.
STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL POSffiON
The information below is the balance as of December 31, 2003 for the Statement of Financial
Position.
Assets
Pettv Cash. Checking, and Money Market Investment Account: + 124,851. Reconciled balances
as ofDecember 31, 2003.
Section 125 Checking Account: +255. Flexible Spending Account for dependent'chi1d care and
unreimbursed medical expenses. Reconciled balance as of December 31,2003.
Accounts Receivable- Conference Registration: +535. Amount billed to organizations and
individuals for registration to the Grantmakers Grantseekers 2003 and the Nonprofit Day 2003
event. Remittance is anticipated to occur within the next few months.
Accounts Receivable- Conference Bookstore: +212. Amount billed to organizations and
individuals for book sales at the Grantmakers Grantseekers 2003 bookstore. Remittance is
anticipated to occur within the next few months.
Accounts Receivable- CMA: +54,976. Amount billed to ConnectMichigan Alliance for
additional expenditures that occurred during the start-up process. The expenditures included
salaries, benefit costs, and operational costs. Remittance is anticipated to occur throughout the
fiscal year.
Accounts Receivable MNA Dues: +2,250. Amount billed for MNA membership renewals in the
months ofNovember and December of2003. Remittance is anticipated to occur within the next
few months.
Accounts Receivable- C. S. Mott Foundation: +50,000. A three year grant was awarded on
January 1, 2002 from C. S. Mott Foundation for MPPI. This grant will be paid in three $50,000
increments. The first and second of the three payments were remitted in March of2002 and
March of2003. The remaining payment is anticipated in March of2004.

�Accounts Receivable- Classified Ads: +2,736. Amount billed to organizations for advertising
of positions, etc. in MNA Websites and Links Newsletter. Remittance is anticipated to occur
within the next few months.
Accounts Receivable- Sponsors: + 1,350. Amount billed for the conference sponsors.
Remittance is anticipated to occur within the next few months.
Prepaid Accounts: + 10,565. Prepaid insurance, postage, copier, conference and training
deposits that will be expensed as the expenditures occur.
Liabilities and Net Assets
Accounts Payable: + 14,295. This balance consists of operational expenditures that occurred this
month to be remitted in January of 2004. The liability consists of some contract payments and
other general operational expenditures.
Other current liabilities: + 18,736. The accrued vacation, withholdings and sales tax payable are
expensed as the expenditure occurs.
Deferred Revenue- Training: + 1,500. This line item represents prepayment for the 2005
D!stance Learning Agreement with Michigan Center for Rural Health that is to be allocated to
revenue in July of 2005.
Capital Lease Payable: +2,944. This line item represents the computer equipment lease with
Dell Financial Services.
Umestricted: +65,463. This account is the offset for the closeout of the Revenue over Expense
account at fiscal year end.
Temp. Restricted Ameritech Grant: +37,625. This Ameritech Grant was awarded in May of
2002. Expenditures for the michigarmonprofit.com and other restricted costs are anticipated to
occur throughout the fiscal year.
Temp. Restricted MPPI- C. S. Mort Grant: +50,000. The Charles Stewart Mort Foundation
awarded a $150,000 three year grant in January of2002. The remaining expenditures for the
Michigan Public Policy Initiative programs are anticipated to occur throughout the fiscal year.
Temo. Restricted- MNA Dues: +68,186. This balance is the unearned amount of member dues
representing, for each member, !!12th of the armual dues payment.
Temp. Restricted MPPI- Aspen Institute: +4,598. The Aspen Institute awarded a $31,775 grant
in July of 2002 to support the Michigan Nonprofit Research Program. The remaining
expenditures for the Michigan Nonprofit Research Program are anticipated to occur throughout
the fiscal year 2003-2004.
Revenue over Expenses: +23,150. This is the balance from the year to date revenue over
expense statement.

�STATEMENT OF ACTIVITIES
The information below is based on year to date (YID) variance which is detailed in the second to
the last column of the Statement of Activities.
Revenue
General Contributions: +2,816. General and individual contributions are ahead of projections.
futerest & Dividends: <173>. futerest and dividends are behind budget projections due to lower
interest rates on the Standard Federal checking and money market investment account balances.
Grants and Contracts- Strategic: <67,500>. This line item is behind budget projections due to
pending grants and contracts. We anticipate these proposals to be awarded throughout the fiscal
year.
Umestricted Grants and Contracts: <37,625>. This line item is behind budget projections due to
anticipated expenditures to occur in the Ameritech Grant that was awarded in May of 2002 for the
rnichigannonprofit.com website costs. We anticipate these expenditures to occur within the next
few months.
Restricted Grants- Training and Technical Assistance: +4,000. This line item represents an
unbudgeted grant award from CenterPoint fustitute, fuc. for the ''Venture Fund for Engaging
Communities of Color."
Restricted Grants - MPPI: <22,567>. This line item is behind budget projections due topending
grants and contracts. We anticipate these proposals to be awarded throughout the fiscal year.
Existing Grants- MPPI: <12,464>. This line item is behind budget projections due to equal
monthly budget allocations of expenditures for Michigan Public Policy fuitiative programs.
Membership Dues: <4,598>. MNA memberships are behind budget projections due to equal
monthly budget allocations with the anticipation of an increase in membership applications.
Consulting: + 18,871. This line item is ahead of projections due to equal monthly budget
allocations. $12,000 of this line item represents a contracted payment from a unique partnership
with City Connect Detroit for the web-based funding opportunities.
Program Fees: +4,359. This line item is ahead of budget projections due to the participation of
an unbudgeted Training and Technical Assistance program held in November of2003.
Sponsorships Conferences: +2,500. This line item is ahead of budget projections due to early
remittance of a Volunteerism SuperConference 2004 sponsor.
Sponsorships MPPI: + 1,500. This line item represents additional sponsorship revenue for the
2003 Nonprofit Day event which is a program of the Michigan Public Policy fuitiative.
Sponsorships Nonprofit Outreach: <2,183>. This line item is behind budget projections due to
equal monthly budget allocation of the Nonprofit Outreach newsletter and directory sponsors.

�Publications: <2,683>. This line item is behind projections due to equal monthly budget
allocations of the Nonprofit Outreach publication sales.
Miscellaneous Income: +527. This line item is ahead of budget projections due to additional
sales of MNA member mailing disks and other various items.
Expenses (negative expense items reflect a positive impact on the bottom line.)
Salaries and Benefits: <13,722>. These line items represent savings of a full-time MPPI position
due to pending revenue proposals. The new position will be filled when funding is available.
This line item also represents equal monthly budget allocations.
Liability Insurance: <183>. This line item represents budget savings due to equal monthly
budget allocations with anticipation of an increase in our D&O Insurance coverage cost.
Contract Services: <81,891>. This line item represents several program variances. The largest
of the variance, in the amount of$37,625, was due to the anticipated michigannonprofit.com
website contract services. The remaining variances consist of postponed program expenditures
that are awaiting the approval of pending program revenue. The expenditures are anticipated to
occur as funding becomes available.
Office Exoenses: <1,455>. These line items represent an overall budget savings due to equal
monthly budget allocation of operational expenses.
Printing I Publications: <23,727>. This line item is under budget due to expenditures anticipated
for the printing of the NPO and MPPI publications and brochures. Expenditures are budgeted to
occur throughout the fiscal year.
Meeting Exoenses: +3,611. This line item is over budget projections due to the unbudgeted
Training and Technical Assistance program expenditure for an event that took place in November
of2003.
Travel Expenses: <5,031>. This line item is under budget projections due to equal monthly
budget allocations throughout this fiscal year. The expenditures are anticipated to occur at
various times throughout the fiscal year.
Grants and Sponsorships: <1,475>. This line item represents budget savings due to equal
monthly budget allocations to award grants and sponsorship of other events throughout the fiscal
year.
Miscellaneous: <1,070>. This line item represents budget savings due to equal monthly budget
allocations to. absorb the unforeseen costs.

Motions Approved and Referred to the MNA Board of Trustees
At its February 26, 2004 meeting, the MNA Executive Committee adopted the following
position statements on the state budget.
1. The Michigan Nonprofit Association supports an increase in the State cigarette
tax.
2. The Michigan Nonprofit Association supports an increase in the mark-up applied
to liquor sales.
3. The Michigan Nonprofit Association supports modernizing the State Sales and
Use Tax structure in regards to taxes on services- while excluding and protecting
services provided by nonprofits, those services provided on the basis of
documented need, and services in the realms of health, human service and
education. * Please note that the exact language of this position is being revised.
4. The Michigan Nonprofit Association supports an increase in the State beer and
wine taxes.
Please note that additional information regarding MNA's efforts to address the State
budget crisis will be available at the Board retreat.
The Executive Committee also indicated that, at the September Board of Trustees
meeting, the Committee would like the full Board to have a discussion regarding the
Affirmative Action Ballot Proposal.

Volunteerism SuperConference 2004:
Strengthening Communities through Service
CALL FOR PRESENTERS
Application Deadline: January 16, 2004

Dear Colleague:
We are pleased to invite you to consider presenting a workshop at Michigan's Volunteerism SuperConference 2004.
The Conference will be May 24 and 25, 2004 at the Amway Grand Plaza in Grand Rapids.
Over 500 volunteer program managers, nonprofit executive staff, development professionals, volunteer leaders, and
leaders from the government, corporate and faith communities will gather for two days of learning, networking and renewal.
The theme of the conference is Strengthening Communities through Service. Features will include over 40 workshops, a strong roster of keynote speakers, an exhibit and book store area of resources and opportunities for networking.
There will also be an exciting Governor's Service Awards dinner on Monday evening.
In framing your workshop proposal please consider the needs of the target audience for the conference. The topic may
address, but is not limited to, the conference tracks below:

Workshop presenters are volunteers. While we are not able to reimburse you for travel, materials or lodging expenses, we can offer complimentary conference registration the day(s) of your presentation(s), including breakfast.
Luncheon tickets may be purchased for that day. If you wish to attend the conference on a day you are not presenting, you
are very welcome to register for a reduced rate of $1 00 for the day.
Our participants value interactive workshops. Conference participants prefer workshops with an opportunity for
dialogue, small group activities and exploratory learning. A question and answer session at the end is not sufficient.
Within the confines of the 75 minute time frame and auditorium-style seating, please describe how your workshop will be
interactive.
Many of our participants have a good deal of experience. While some attendees will have little experience, most will have
worked in their field for many years. Please bear in mind that you will have a mixed audience. We would also like to
identify some sessions for advanced practitioners. If that describes the intended audience for your workshop, please
indicate so in your proposal.

Each workshop is seventy-five minutes. Four (4)
workshop blocks will be offered. A seminar-style
session can be presented in the two consecutive
workshop blocks on Monday afternoon.
Proposal Deadline: Proposals must be received via
mail or fax by 5:00p.m., Friday, January 16,2004.
Proposal Selection: The Planning Committee will
review all applications and make the selection of
workshops to be included in the conference program.
Please do not contact MNA regarding the status of your
application. Confirmations will be mailed to contact
people no later than February 6, 2004.

Please Note:
•
Presenters are strongly encouraged to not take
time for introductions of workshop attendees and to
lim it the lecture portion of their workshop to no more
than 45 minutes to allow adequate time for participant feedback, discussion and questions.

Presenters are encouraged to structure their
presentations to be interactive opportunities for
"hands-on" learning and networking.

Workshops are limited to two presenters receiving
complementary registration for the day of the
workshop. Use of panels is discouraged. If more
than two presenters are required, the additional
presenters will pay full registration for the day.
