As a reminder, the MNA financial statements have been modified to reflect the new laws governing nonprofit financial repmiing. STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL POSITION The information below is the balance as March 31, 2008 for the Statement of Financial Position. Assets Petty Cash. Checking and Money Market Investment Account: +1,447,641. Reconciled balances as of December 31, 2007. Due to tax season, external auditor has been unable to review bank statements and financials for this quarter. Section 125 and HRA Employee Benefit Checking Account: +8,130. Section 125 Employee Benefit Account for on-reimbursed medical related expenses for the staff who participate in the Flexible Spending and medical insurance benefit plans. Reconciled balance as of December 31, 2007. Accounts Receivable- NPower: +5,173. Amount billed for NPower Consulting work completed iu March 2008. Remittance is anticipated to occur within the next month. Accounts Receivable- MI Promise: +25,000. Amount recognized for the America's Promise Drop Out Summit Grant. Remittance is anticipated to occur within the next month. Accounts Receivable- MPPI: +25,000. Amount recognized for Minnesota Council of Nonprofit's Michigan Patiicipation Grant. Remittance is anticipated to occur within the next month. Accounts Receivable- MNA Dues: + 12,925. Amount billed for MNA membership renewals for February and March 2008. Remittance is anticipated to occur within the next month. Accounts Receivable- CCF Grant: +456, I 05. On September 30, 2007, MNA was awarded a three year grant by the Administration for Children and Families. This grant was awarded to help a statewide initiative for the capacity building of small nonprofits. Remittance occurs as approved expenditures are reported in on this Federal Grant and is anticipated throughout the fiscal year. Accounts Receivable- CNCS: +564,981. This line item represents two grants from the Corporation for National Community Service. In May of2007, Michigan Campus Compact was awarded a grant in the amount of$22,042. In September of2006, Michigan Campus Compact was awarded a Learn and Serve grant in which the carry over amount is $311,428.46. In September of2007, Michigan Campus Compact was awarded the second year Learn and Serve grant in the amount of$380,339. The Community Foundation of SE Michigan awarded grant for the Metro Detroit Partnership Strategic Fund. Remittance is anticipated to occur within the next month. Accounts Receivable- W. K. Kellogg Foundation: +510,000. TheW. K. Kellogg Foundation awarded a five year grant in the amount of $850,000 to the Michigan Nonprofit Strategic Fund on November I, 2005. The remaining remittance, in the amount of$170,000, is anticipated to occur in the spring of2008, 2009, and 2010. Accounts Receivable- W. K. Kellogg Foundation- Calhoun Countv: +500,000. TheW. K. Kellogg Foundation awarded a three year grant in the amount of$1,500,000 to the Michigan Nonprofit Calhoun County Leadership Program on October I, 2006. The remaining remittance, in the amount of $500,000, is anticipated to occur in October of 2008. Accounts Receivable- Hudson-Webber Foundation Grant: +75,000. The Hudson-Webber Foundation awarded a three year grant in the amount of$225,000 for the Metro Detroit Partnership Strategic Fund in May of2006. The remaining remittance, in the amount of $75,000, is anticipated to occur in May of2008. Accounts Receivable- DTE Energy Foundation: +50,000. The DTE Energy Foundation awarded a three year grant on January 25, 2007 in the amount of $150,000 for the Michigan Nonprofit Strategic Fund projects. This grant will be paid in three increments. The remaining payments are anticipated to occur in Januruy of2009. Accounts Receivable- Classified Ads: +2,612. Amount billed to organizations for adve11ising of positions and etc. in our MNA Websites and Links Newsletter. Remittance is anticipated to occur within the next few months. Accounts Receivable- MM VISTA: +5,778. This line item represents the unexpended balance of salruy and fringe benefits of the former program manager for a grant that was trans felTed fi·om ConnectMichigan Alliance. This balance will be written off after audit completion. Accounts Receivable -MM AmeriCoros: +96,615. The Michigan Community Sel'Vice Commission awarded a second year AmeriCorps Grant in the amount of $416,592 to Mentor Michigan/CMA in October of 2006. This is a reimbursement grant in which remittance occurs as approved expenditures are rep01ted. This balance will be written off after audit completion. Accounts Receivable- MSS AmeriCoros: +42,396. The Michigan Community Sel'Vice Commission awarded a Michigan Se!'Vice Scholars- A new grant was awarded for 2007-2008 for 450 members in October 2007 in the amount of$54,000. This is a reimbursement grant in which remittance occurs as approved expenditures are reported. Remittance is anticipated throughout the fiscal year. Accounts Receivable- Consulting: + 16,100. Amount billed for the funding opportunities services contract with City Connect Detroit. Remittance is anticipated to occur within the next few months. Accounts Receivable -MCSC: + 114,059. Amount contracted for Mentor Michigan Coordinator and Mentor Michigan Communication Specialist thru Michigan Community Service Commission. Amount to be received throughout the fiscal year. Prepaid insurance, postage, copier, conference, training, and Detroit Office security deposits that will be expensed as the expenditures occur. Liabilities and Net Assets Accounts Payable: +237,260. This balance consists of operational expenditures to be remitted in April of2008. The liability consists of some contract payments and other general operational expenditures. Other current liabilities: +S4,362. The accrued vacation, unemployment tax liability, withholdings, sales tax payable and employee benefit accounts are expensed as the expenditure occurs. Deferred Membership Revenue: +20,47S. This line item represents prepayment for April and May of 2008 Membership Renewals that is to be allocated to accounts receivable and revenue in November and December of2007. Capital Lease- Kansas State Bank: +6,34S. This line item represents the copier equipment lease with Kansas State Bank. The copier equipment is a 48 month lease to own contract that began August IS, 200S and ends July IS, 2009. Unrestricted: +S4,370. This account is the offset for the closeout of the Revenue over Expense account at fiscal year end. This amount is un-audited for the month ending March 31, 2008. Capital Asset- Operational Reserve: +I 0,000. Upon approval, this account is to be used to support the organization's operational costs pertaining to personnel, space, and other basic operating costs. Capital Asset- Mission Reserve: +43,99S. Upon approval, this account is to be used to meet unanticipated needs or take advantage of unforeseen oppo1tunities. Capital Asset- MCC Reserve: +40,000. During the 06-07 Fiscal Year, $43,99S was budgeted and approved for purposes of supporting the Michigan Campus Compact- 2007 Carter Awards Ceremony. Temp. Restricted- W. K. Kellogg: +420,878. TheW. K. Kellogg Foundation awarded a five year grant in November of200S for the amount of$8SO,OOO to the Michigan Nonprofit Strategic fund. Funds are released and transferred from this restricted grant to the Umestricted Grants & Contracts Strategic Fund - Revenue and Expense Statement as expenditures occur. Temporary Restricted- Mentor Michigan AmeriCoros: + 179,280. The Michigan Community Service Commission awarded an Ame~iCorps in the amount of $4S2,000 to Mentor Michigan!CMA in October of200S. Funds are released and transferred from this restricted grant to the Unrestricted Grants Mentor Michigan AmeriCorps - Revenue and Expense Statement as expenditures occur. This is the final year of this grant award and all monies are to be expended by January 2008. Temporary Restricted Kellogg R & E Grant: +28, 193. TheW. K. Kellogg Foundation awarded a private grant in the amount of$300,000 effective April!, 2007 for a period of three years. First year disbursement is in the amount of$100,377. This grant was awarded to develop a system to identify, benchmark evaluate and communicate information about the service and volunteer supp01t infrastructure in Michigan. Temporary Restricted- First Focus/MP: +23,240. Volunteer Centers of Michigan was awarded a Drop Out Summit Grant in the amount of$25,000 in March 2008. Remittance, in the amount of$25,000, is expected in the next month. Temporary Restricted- The Dow Foundation: +25,000. The Dow Foundation awarded a three year grant in the amount of$75,000 to Michigan Campus Compact in November of2004. This is a grant to support the High School Merit Scholarship program. Remittance, in the amount of $25,000, occmTed on December 18, 2006 and final in the spring of2008. Tempormy Restricted-McGregor ICF: +119,403. In December of2007, Michigan Campus Compact was awarded a grant to expand our Learn and Serve grant program, Investing in College Futures. Funds will be sub granted over two yem·s to four colleges and universities, to specifically center their service efforts in the city of Detroit and surrounding areas. Temponuy Restricted-MCC LSA: +461,563. In September of2007, Michigan Campus Compact was awarded the second year Learn and Serve grant. Remittance occurs as approved expenditures are reported in this Federal Grant and is anticipated throughout the fiscal year. Temporary Restricted- MCC VISTA: + 15,971. The Corporation for National Community Setvice awarded a grant in the amount of $22,042 to Michigan Campus Compact VISTA program in May of 2007. Funds are released and transferred from this restricted grant to the Unrestricted Grants Michigan Campus Compact VISTA- Revenue and Expense Statement as expenditures occur. Temporary Restricted- MSS AmeriCorps: +35,420. The Michigan Community Service Commission awarded a Michigan Setvice Scholars - AmeriCorps grant to Michigan Campus Compact in September of2007. Funds are released and transferred from this restricted grant to the Umestricted Grants MCC Michigan Service Scholars (MSS) Program - Revenue and Expense Statement as expenditures occur. Temporaty Restricted- MM Contracted: +68,961. Amount contracted for Mentor Michigan Coordinator and Mentor Michigan Communication Specialist thru Michigan Community Service Commission. Amount to be received throughout the fiscal year. Temporary Restricted- MM VISTA: +5, 778. This line item represents the unexpended balance of salary and fringe benefits of the former program manager for a grant that was transferred from ConnectMichigan Alliance. Kellogg Foundation awarded a three year grant in the amount of $1,500,000 to suppmt the Calhoun County project. Funds are released and transferred from this restricted grant unrestricted grant- Calhoun Co. - Revenue and Expense Statement as expenditures occur. Temporaty Restricted- CCF Grant: +440,936. This grant was awarded to help a state-wide initiative for the capacity building of small nonprofits. Remittance occurs as approved expenditures are reported in on this Federal Grant and is anticipated throughout the fiscal year. Tempormy Restricted- VCM VIG Grant: +46,313. Michigan Community Service Commission awarded a grant to Volunteer Centers of Michigan for June of2005. Temp. Restricted- MPPI: +25,000. This line item represents a grant awarded by the Minnesota Council of Nonprofit's to support the Michigan Patiicipation Project. Funds are released and transferred from this restricted grant to the Unrestricted Grants- MPPI -Revenue and Expense Statement as expenditures occur. Temp. Restricted Metro Detroit Office: +88,050. This line item represents multi-year grants awarded to the Michigan Nonprofit and Metro Detroit Partnership Strategic Fund. In December of 2005, multiyear grants from The Kresge Foundation and the McGregor Fund were awarded to the Metro Detroit Partnership Strategic Fund in an amount totaling $675,000. In May of2006, The Hudson-Webber Foundation awarded a three year grant in the amount of $225,000 for the Metro Detroit Partnership Strategic Fund. Funds are released and transferred from this restricted grant to the Unrestricted Grants -Detroit Office - Revenue and Expense Statement as expenditures occur. Temp. Restricted- MNA Dues: + 122,093. This balance is the unearned amount of member dues representing, for each member, 1112th of the annual dues payment. Temp. Restricted MPPI- GVSU Research Grant: +6,973. Grand Valley State University awarded a grant to suppoti the MPPI - Research program. Funds are released and transferred from this restricted grant to the Unrestricted Grants - MPPI Research - Revenue and Expense Statement as expenditures occur. Revenue over Expenses: +517,352. This is the balance from the year to date revenue over expense statement. STATEMENT OF ACTIVITIES The information below is based on year to date (YTD) variance which is detailed in the second to the last column of the Statement of Activities. Revenue General Contributions: +7,416. General, individual and strategic contributions are ahead of projections due to additional general fund contributions. Interest & Dividends: <5,441>. Interest and dividends are behind budget projections due to the delay in transferring funds from CormectMichigan Alliance's bank account over to MNA. The budget projections were set at a higher standard with the addition of available funds provided with the merger that were to be invested in cetiificates of deposit. This delay is a result ofuncetiainty relating to the newly merged organization's projected expenses at the beginning of the fiscal year. Grants and Contracts- Strategic: + 138,220. This line item represents partial money transferred from the ConnectMichigan Alliance assets acquired during the merger. We will continue to pursue funding opportunities throughout the fiscal year. Unrestricted Grants and Contracts: +I 02,561. Payments are expected to increase this fiscal year. Sponsorships: <1,352>. This line item represents a balance due for sponsorship to the Management Manual. The manual is behind schedule and sponsorship hasn't been requested to date. Publications: <193>. This line item is behind budget projections due to decreased activity of online publication sales and publication sales. Miscellaneous Income: +23,830. This line item is ahead of budget projections due to the increased requests of Marketing packages, MNA member mailing lists, staff travel expense reimbursements, and other various items. Employee Medical Plan Savings: +35,055. This line item represents the benefit savings program to assist in offsetting the rising cost of healthcare insurance premiums. Expenses (negative expense items reflect a positive impact on the bottom line.) Salaries and Benefits: <79,468>. These line items represent savings due to delays in hiring new Metro Detroit Office staff and a Calhoun County Program staff. These expenses are budgeted to occur throughout the fiscal year. Liabilitv Insurance: <596>. This line item represents budget savings due to equal monthly budget allocations with anticipation of an increase in our D&O Insurance coverage cost. Contract Services: <340,354>. This line item is under budget projections due to scheduled changes in the leadership and training seminar consultant contracts for Michigan Nonprofit Leadership Institute (MNLI), Calhoun County Leadership programs and the Training and Technical Assistance programs. These programs are anticipated to occur during tllis fiscal year. Office Expenses: <100,225>. This line item represents budget savings due to equal monthly budget allocations. The costs and activities are anticipated to occur throughout this fiscal year. Printing I Publications: <25,217>. This line item is under budget due to expenditures anticipated for the printing of the MNLI, NPO and MPPI publications and brochures. Expenditures are budgeted to occur throughout this fiscal year. Meeting Expenses: <138,524>. This line item is under budget due to savings in several expense categories that are anticipated to occur throughout the fiscal year. Welcome and Call to Order Thank you for coming to our gathering today, we have a full agenda so let's begin by going around the room and introducing ourselves and the organizations we represent. 2. Chair's Report As many ofyour know, this is the last meeting where I will have the honor to serve as your board chair. Before I end my tenure, I have as one of my final duties, the honor of thanking some ofthe other board members who have served our organization. Suzanne Heatlt, would you join me at the ji-ont? Suzanne's service on the MNA board has ranged through a number of duties, most recently, on the Nominating Commilfee. Her most recent efforts have created a new direction and pwpose to the board's own development work that we will hear about later. Suzanne, on behalf of the MNA Board ofDirectors, please accept this small token of appreciation to the work ofMNA and the nonprofits we serve. [Hand Suzanne her gift]. Would Elyse Rogers, please come up and join me at the ji-ont? Elyse has served MNA as a dedicated leader in the nonprofit sector and as Treasurer/or the organization. She leaves us having helped to build a strong oversight system for finances and a ve1y healthy financial portfolio. Thank you Elyse for all you've done for MNA. On behalf of the MNA Board ofDirectors, I would like to present you with this small token of our appreciation for your years ofservice to MNA [Hand Elyse her gift]. Finally, but certainly not last, I would like to ask Justin King to join me. This is a difficult tribute because no matter what I say, itwillnot do service to Justin's commitment to MNA. Justin was one of the original group of nonprofit leaders who came together to build the then Michigan Nonprofit Forum. He has remained with the organization since its inception and has been a tireless leader for the organization and the sector. Justin, I and the board want to thank you for your nearly 18 years ofservice to MNA. Please accept this small token of our esteem. 3. We will take up the Nonprofit Center Task Force first and then go into Executive Session, while we lake up the peJformance review. The Officers of the MNA shall be identical to the Officers of the Board of Directors. The Officers shall serve terms of two years or until replaced and/or their duties have been fulfilled as recommended by the Board Development Committee and will be elected bi-annually by a two-thirds affirmative vote of the Directors present at a duly called and constituted meeting. ARTICLE VII: Committees (1) The Board of Directors shall create the following Standing Committees, whose members shall be appointed by the Chair and ratified by the Board and shall serve at the pleasure of the Board. The Standing Committee Chairs shall report directly and regularly to the Board of Directors. All Standing Committees shall include the President as a non-voting ex officio member. I. (d) Board Development Committee. Members of the Board Development Committee must all be Directors. The Board Development Committee shall review and assess the composition, performance and recommend the membership and leadership (officers) of the Board. The Board Development Committee recommends candidates for At-Large Directors to the Board of Directors as well as candidates to the Board for the Offices of the Board. Rodriguez Algra, Executive Director Date: March 7, 2008 Re: VCM Activities Update We have had a very busy last quatter doing outreach, consulting with Volunteer Centers and developing training for the centers. Below you will find some key highlights of our work since the last time that we reported to the Board. Update on the Volunteer Investment Grant (VIG) Start up ami Expansion Update: • \Ve continue to contract with Cynthia Chilcote to suppmt our five VC Start-Ups with one-onone consultations dming this first year of operations. This includes sites-visits; conference calls and holding special training opportunities for them. We will be hosting a pre-retreat Sustainability Seminar for our Start-Ups on April2, 2008. Our Start-Ups are located in the following communities and are housed as follows: • Lenawee County: The Center in Tecumseh is housed within the Lena wee Community Foundation. Tuscola County: The Thumb Volunteer Alliance is housed and supported by the Human Development Commission in Caro. The agency also supports the local RSVP program. Marquette County: The UP Volunteer Network is being suppmted by the Great Lakes Center for Youth Development and is fOcused on the development of a virtual center for the entire U.P. This is being supported with the help of the 2llnetwork and our two existing centers in Chippewa County and Dickerson, Iron areas ofthe U.P. Livingston County: Volunteer Livingston! is being housed in the Livingston County United Way. St. Clair County: Our newest addition to the network is the United \Vay of St. Clair County in Port Huron. \Ve have been able to support their interest in starting a volunteer center with a small$ 5000 planning grant. The United \Vay Director, Rick Garcia, is very committed to having this happen and has convened a group of community leaders to take this to the next level in the coming year. All three expansions i\'luskcgon, Chippewa and i\'lontcalm counties continue their outreach and service expansion as we move toward universal coverage. • • • • • We were notilied this year that the MCSC would no longer be funding the VCM tlu·ough the Volunteer Investment Grant. This was disappointing considering we had made a three year funding commitment to our start-ups and expansions. \Ve are currently exploring strategies to meet this short fhll in funding. �Instead, the MCSC decided to issue a request for proposals for new programs that would suppo1t volunteer infi"ashucture h1 the following three focus areas: mentodng, engaging baby boomers, and engagh1g youth h1 setvice. The MCSC set aside $200,000 to award. Even though the network as an association was notrefunded, four of our network members were selected for fimding. 'll1ese include: limn an Development Commission Counties Sen,ed: Huron and Sanilac The Human Development Commission will implement the Volunteer Leadership in our Community (VLOC) project. The VLOC will utilize baby boomers skills, talents, knowledge, and experience to suppmt and assist organizations in mral settings. These highly skilled individuals will become volunteer leaders to help identify the needs of organizations and will work collaboratively to create effective strategies to meet those needs. The project will recmit primarily boomer volunteers and coordinate with other volunteer service providers such as the Foster Grandparents Program and the Thumb Volunteer Alliance (A cutTen! VC Start-Up). United \Vay Volunteer Center of Chippewa County-Everyone Can Serve Counties Senwl: Chippewa, Luce, and 1Hackinac The United Way of Chippewa County will support the Evetyone Can Sctve program. This endeavor will unite partner organizations to engage local youth fi:om disadvantaged circumstances in service in and out of the classroom. Grant funds will be used to prepare student teachers, via an intensive training opportunity, to conduct meaningful and efiective service-leaming activities. As a result, at least 20 student teachers will conduct 20 service-learning lessons with 500 students, to perfonn I ,000 hom~ of service. United Way of Northwest Michigan Vohmteer Center Counties Served: Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, and Leelanau The United Way of Northwest Michigan will build and strengthen the virtual capacity of its Volunteer Center in order to significantly increase volunteerism among boomers and youth. Strategic usc of Intemet resources will cftl.cicntly link volunteers and nonprofits across a rural, five-county area. In addition, these grant fimds will help provide Volunteer Use and Management training tor 50 of the 200 nonprofits served, leading to improved volunteer recruitment and placement. The organization expects to increase the number of boomer and youth volunteers by 30 to 45 percent over the next three years and to increase the readiness of nonprofits to utilize volunteer resources. Volunteer Center of Southwest Michigan, Inc Counties SeJ11ed: Berrien Cass, Van Buren The Volunteer Center of Southwest Michigan, Inc., with the support of the Southwest Michigan :rvientoring Collaborative, will utilize an innovative strategy to connect mentors with organizations. This grant will remove batTiers and improve mentor recruitment and retention. Creating a single point of entry for mentors, the Volunteer Center will conduct initial screenings and background checks for potential mentors. A "portable background check" will be created allowing the potential mentor to transfer their file if the initial placement is not a good fit. Those unsure of becoming a mentor will be placed in other volunteer opportunities, including those serving children, and will be encouraged to move into mentoring over time. •Page 2 �Contcast Grant: The pmpose of this initiative is to encourage and muture local collaboratives between Michigan Campus Compact (MCC) member institutions, the Volunteer Centers of Michigan (VCM), and local mentoring or foster care initiatives to further the development of Michigan's volunteer infrastructure and create long lasting local impact. These grants will allow diver~e stakeholders to embrace new ideas of working together to resolve conununity issues regarding the need to increase mentoring matches, setve foster care youth, enhance literacy among all community members, and increased levels of civic engagement among our youth. The funding for this initiative has been made possible by the Comcast J1oundation. Funding will allow MCC and VCM to select five community collaborations that will receive grants in the amount of$5000 each, with the potential to be renewed for two additional year~. We are happy to report that four MCC Higher Education membem and one VCM member were awarded the Comcast Grants. The recipients are: • Michigan State University- Youth Transitioning from Foster Care with St. Vincent Catholic Charities and the Capital Area United Way Volunteer Center • Grand Rapids Comnnmity College- Jvlaking the _Mentoring Connection Project with the Kent County 1\1entoring Collaborative • l\·Iacomb Community College- Mentoring initiative with NISU Extension impacting Youth at Risk • Northernl\'Iichigan University- In partnership with the Teaching Family Home of the Upper :tvlichigan a mentoring program with youth in residential foster care and NMU students as mentors. • Volunteer Center of Southwest l\'Iichigan- In partnership with Andrews University will undertake a needs assessment of mentoring organizations in the community to help enhance and strengthen the work of the Southwest Mentoring Collaborative. Training: We arc currently in the final phases of setting our agenda for the Annual VCM Retreat in Traverse City- April 2-4, 2008. This year's theme is "Sustainability: It Takes More than Money" and is being developed with our help of our in-house "guru" Robin Lynn Grinnell. She has always extended herself to our network and we are most grateful to her for her continued support and commitment to the training and professional development of our network i\'lichigan Drop Out Prevention Leadership Summit The state ofMichigan and the city of Detroit have been selected by America's Promise to participate in this national initiative. Michigan's Promiseflvlichigan Nonprotlt Association (Ivlichigan Campus Compact and Volunteer Centers ofMichigan) and the United Way ofSoutheastem Michigan are spearheading these efforts with the help of key partners. • Page 3 �These summits will strengthen and improve America's schools and result in measurable advances towards effecting policy and program changes. These changes will reduce the number of high school dropouts and prepare more young people for success in college, work and life. We are happy to report that the following organizations have come forth with financial support for this initiative: State Fann, America's Promise and First Focus. Additional outreach for sponsors will take place in the coming months. Our overall goal is to develop a comprehensive strategy that will ensure more high school graduation, via integrated, cross-sector, collaborative action at the local and state level This can be achieved through the use of community teams and the participation of key state-level decision makers. Michigan's Dropout Prevention Leadc1~hip Summit will be attended by local community teams composed of key players within communities and/or regions in Michigan. Teams will be asked to include representatives from youth serving agencies, education, volunteer setvices, colleges ancVor universities, public and elected officials, co1porate representatives, youth and members of the America's Promise initiative. Conununity teams that are selected for funding through the mini grants will be expected to attend the summit and share what steps they are developing locally for addressing dropout issues, which will include public policy and volunteerism as key components. Michigan "Fair Tax" Proposal (Attachment#!) The MNA Public Policy Committee recommends that the MNA Board of Tmstees adopt the following resolution: The Michigan Nonprofit Association opposes the so-called Michigan "Fair Tax" Proposal due to its negative impact on non profits and those they serve. B. MNA Principles for Addressing the State Structural Deficit (Attachment #2) The MNA Public Policy Committee recommends that the MNA Board of Trustees adopt the attached principles for addressing the state structural deficit. C. Ballot Initiative Reform The MNA Public Policy Committee considered several reforms to the ballot initiative and referendum process. This led to a special meeting of the committee on March I 0. Staff will send a supplemental report on this action item to the board prior the board meeting. Discussion Items A. State and Federal Legislative Update- Staff provided an overview regarding several pieces of state legislation, including SB 123 now PA 9 allowing nonprofits to utilize electronic communication for several activities involving boards of directors and members. Staff also updated the committee on the Give Act in Congress as it relates to funding for national and community service. �B. New Auditing Standards- The connnittee reviewed new auditing standards that were enacted in 2006 and late 2007. It is expected that these standards will significantly increase both the cost and burden of completing an audit. The committee recommended that MNA offer educational workshops to provide infonnation to members regarding the new standards. C. Regional Councils- MNA staff reported on the success of five legislative breakfasts held across Southeast Michigan and updated the committee on the progress of the council's action plans as related to their top priorities- preventing cuts to the state budget, promoting the partnership between government andnonprofits and educating the public on the economic role ofnonprofits. Linda Wendt with the Battle Creek Community Foundation also informed the group that the Calhoun County Regional Council will hold a legislative breakfast in Marcil. D. E-Filing and Staying Legal- MNA staff informed the committee that nonprofits can now e-file their 990s and charitable trust paperwork online and that the Staying Legal website is complete and will be launched soon. �Michigan Fair Tax Proposal Introduction The Michigan Fair Tax Proposal would completely replace the Michigan Business Tax (MBT), Personal Property Tax (PPT), 6 mill business School Education Tax (SET) tax, and Michigan Income Tax with a single sales tax. The fair tax proposal petition language has been approved by the Board of Canvassers and a signature collection effort was launched on Februaty 12. Groups endorsing the proposal include: Small Business Association of Michigan, National Taxpayers Union, Wyoming Kentwood Chamber, Republican Women's Federation of Michigan, and Wayne County Taxpayer's Association. Impact on Charities Based on MNA's initial research, charities would be significantly impacted by the Fair Tax Proposal. Specifically: • • • • • Products and property purchased by charities would continue to be exempt from paying sales tax if the purchases were made to further the mission of the organization. Retail sold by nonprofits would no longer be exempt. Currently, nonprofits arc exempt from collecting sales tax for retail sold up to $5,000 a year. Existing tax credits for charitable giving would end. Individual tax credits for charitable giving to certain types of nonprofits are income tax credits and since the income tax would be eliminated so would the tax credits. Also, the business tax credits for supporting certain types of nonprofits arc based on the Michigan Business Tax which would no be collected. Estimated $1 billion or more loss of revenue to the state treasury resulting in additional demand on the nonprofit sector to meet critical needs. It is unlikely that this proposal would be revenue neutral. The Director of Elections would prepare and the Board of State Canvassers would approve the suggested language for a 100-word statement of purpose within 45 days after the fiscal impact statement is completed and approved. Both the approved 100-word statement of purpose and the I 00-word fiscal impact statement must be printed at the top of the petition in the manner specified by law. Karla noted that the meeting was special due to two reasons: first, we will be joined for lunch by most of the MNA staff who worked hard all year to support our members and the nonprofit sector; and second, this will be the last office Board meeting for Sam Singh. We will take some time at the end of this meeting to pay tribute to Sam's tremendous leadership and dedication to MNA and the nonprofit sector. Next, Karla asked everyone to introduce themselves. Approval of the September 11,2007, MNA Board of Trustee Meeting Minutes A motion was made by William Mayes and seconded by Neeta Delancy to approved the September 11,2007 MNA Board of Trustee meeting minutes. Motion carried. Chair's Report Karla Hall reported that the Executive Committee met to discuss two items. First, the Committee agreed that Kyle Caldwell is making good progress on the merger, reorganization and goal development for MNA. Second, the Committee followed up on the Board's direction to staff to revise the organization's mission statement. The Executive Committee recommended to adopt the revised mission statement. A discussion followed and the Board of Trustees approved changing the mission statement ofMNA to better reflect our new organization, and to help guide the strategic planning our organization will undertake at the March Retreat. �The Michigan Nonprofit Association increases the capacity ofMichigan's nonprofits to serve, strengthen and transform comnumities. A motion was made by David Seaman and seconded by Jackie Taylor to adopt the revised mission statement as noted above. Motion carried. President's Report Kyle Caldwell reported that advancement on the merger is going forward and the progress staff has made is outstanding. During the staff retreat, staff developed internal/external goals, complaints into commitments and vision to advance MNA's work. There arc still some challenges to be worked on, but the programs, trainings and other services offered by MNA have remained at the highest level. Kyle will provide additional information at the March 18 Board retreat. Kyle also noted that he will share the evaluation progress with the Board when it has been completed. Finance Committee Report Lisa Keefer reported on the un-audited Financial Statements for month ending October 31, 2007. She stated that expenses have been kept under control and NPower Michigan has been working to increase its funding. Lisa reviewed the recommendation and staff response to the Plante Moran review. In addition, Lisa stated that normal monthly expenses have increase due to the larger staff size. Lisa said the motions to come before the Board today are: The Finance Committee recommends to the iv!NA Board of trustees approval of the 1111-audited Financial Statements for the month ending October 31, 2007. The Finance Committee recommends to the MNA Board of Trustees approval of the sh![f re.1p011se to the Plante l'vloran revielV ()(policies and procedures. The Finance Committee recommends to the MNA Board ()(11-ltstees approval to increase the dollar m1101111t neededfor t\Vo signatures on accounts payable checks.fi-om $15,000 to $20,000. A motion was made by David Seaman and seconded by Ed Blcws that the above three recommendations to the MNA Board of Trustees be approved. Motion carried. Audit Committee Report Anne Rosewarne reported that new auditing standards went into effect December 31 and that in November, MNA's auditor, David Ambrose, who works independently, requested an extension to Februmy. She reported that, The }.J.NA Audit Committee recommends that the 1\1NA Board of Trustees empo\Ver the MNA Audit Committee to revielV and approve the audit provided by 1\lr. David Ambrose prior to the lvfarch Board meeting. The Audit Committee \Vould then report on all .findings to the .fit!! Board at the March 18 Board meeting. �A motion to empower the MNA Audit Committee to review and approve the audit and report back to the full Board in March was made by Anne Rosewarne and seconded by Mike Boulus. Motion carried. Membership Committee Report Robin Lynn Grinnell reported that due to the weather, Chair, Barbara Hill, was stuck in Memphis, TN. Robin reported that the Membership Committee and staff are working on a twoyear plan for membership recmitment and retention. MNA Marketing, Communication and Evaluation teams will assist Member Services with various components of the plan. A discussion followed regarding the dues structure and whether the amount charged to larger members should increase. Robin also reported that the 2008 Nonprofit Compensation & Benefit Survey was distributed in November and organizations were asked to respond by December 14, 2007. Organizations that complete the survey will receive a ±i·ee electronic copy of the final document which is scheduled for release in May 2008. NPower Michigan Andy Wolber reported that NPower has integrated their offices to the New York office and arc working on standardizing services. The Corporate fundraising effort is being lead by Bill Liebold. A request for $100,000 was made to The Kresge Foundation to advance technology in Southeast Michigan. Andy reported that several managed service programs are being developed for the new year. Michigan Campus Compact Jackie Taylor congratulated Amy Smitter, her staff, the facility, staff and administration of the 34 member campuses who have already participated in the 2007 Michigan Campus Compact Listening Tour. The tour has inspired campuses involved with the movement for civic learning within higher education which helped to provide feedback and direction for Michigan Campus Compact. Jackie reported that a sub-committee was formed to revise MCC's Board Bylaws to provide more flexibility for the staff and Board. These changes will provide opportunities for Emeritus members, industry leaders and others to join the Board. Amy took this time to congratulate Jackie Taylor on her recent retirement from Davenport University. A warm round of applause followed. Amy Smitter reported that the 12 1h annual Institute for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement would be held February 7-9 on the campus of Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. Speakers this year include, Paul Loeb has spent 35 years researching and writing about citizen responsibility and empowerment--asking what makes some people choose lives of social commitment, while others abstain; David E. Campbell is the John Cardinal O'Hara, C.S.C. Associate Professor of Political Science at the University ofNotre Dame, as well as a research fellow with Notre Dame's Institute for Educational Initiatives. Amy reported that there will be two receptions on Wednesday evening: A Learn and Serve Past & Present Grantee Reception fi·om 7:00 --8:00pm, and a general conference Welcome Reception from 8:00-9:00 pm. Amy also noted that the Council of Presidents Meeting is on March 10,2008, at theW. K. Kellogg Foundation. Volunteer Centers of Michigan fVCMl Diana Rodriguez Algra asked evetyone to review the enclosed Volunteer Center of Michigan 2006-2007 Annual Report. Diana noted that in 2006-2007, the Volunteer Centers of Michigan received a Volunteer Investment Grant (VIG) award from the Michigan Community Service Commission in the amount of $200,000, which increased volunteer opportunities to over 89% of Michigan citizens. Diana reported that the data collection system collects and analyzes the statewide volunteer impact, but does not reflect indirect volunteer referrals through the website. (Please refer to the report for specific numbers). Dale Weighill noted that the Volunteer Centers have seen a significant change on the national level due to the merger of the Points of Light Foundation and Hands On. The new organization will be led by Michelle Nunn, co-founder and CEO of 1-lands On Network. Ray Chambers, a philanthropist, will serve as the new organization's chairman of the board during the integration period. Neil Bush, CEO oflgnite! Learning in Houston and son offonner President George li.W. Bush, will serve as vice chair. The merger takes effect on July 30 and will otlicially launch on October I, 2007. Diana reported on the activities of The LEAGUE. She noted that the LEAGUE Michigan held its second Commission meeting in October and laid out concert goals for the upcoming year. Diana reported that the Meijer Corporation has agreed to assist in recruiting schools in coordination with the National Launch around The Drive event, and sent letter to each public school in Michigan encouraging classrooms to join The LEAGUE and added a $2,500 cash incentive for the top classroom in an elementary, middle and high school. To date, the LEAGUE Michigan has raised $142,500. In addition, Diane noted that the Council of Michigan Foundation welcomed The LEAGUE at their annual conference and allowed them to present at the conference. Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC) Musette Michael distributed a current list of the MCSC Commissions. Musette noted that January is Mentoring Month and many events are being planned. Please let Musette know-if you would like to part of the MCSC listsetv. Musette distributed information on Martin Luther King Day- a day of service, where MCSC, The League, Volunteer Centers of Michigan and the Corporation for National & Community Service have joined forces to coordinate organized service projects. Leadership and Training Committee Report Robin Lynn Grinnell reviewed several trainings including the Signature Series, the third annual Funding Resources Face-to-Face Conference and others that had taken place. Robin gave an update on the Emerging Leaders and Executive Leadership Fellows programs and said that the programs arc nearing the half-way point and evaluations have been overwhelmingly positive. Robin discussed Consulting and Custom Training. She noted that due to the large volume of '' �requests for training, MNA has published a Consultant Resource Directory that lists consultants on their ability to help in different areas. MNA only recommends the highest level of trainers. SuperConference 2008 Update Neeta Delaney reported that SuperConference 2008 is scheduled for May 13 and 14, 2008, with a pre-conference date of May 12, 2008. The conference will be held at the Lansing Center, Lansing, MI. The theme this year is Teaming Up for Community Success. Neeta noted that the conference features Michelle Num1, CEO of the Points of Light & Hands On Network, Carol Goss, The Skillman Foundation and Patrick Corvington, The Annie E. Casey Foundation. More than 50 workshops on topics such as fund development, nonprofit management, governance, advocacy, inter-generational communication and strategies, national service program management, volunteer program management and messaging will be offered at the conference. MNA Detroit Office Report Charlene Turner Jolmson reported that The Michigan Nonprofit Association will deliver training, technical assistance, and sub-grant awards to nonprofits throughout the state of Michigan through lvfichigan NOW!, a three-year federal Compassion Capital Fund grant to build the capacity of community-based and faith-based organizations with budgets of up to $500,000 per year. Michigan NOW! will be delivered state-wide (excluding Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Ingham counties which are served by other programs) by program staff and through partners in four regions. The goal of !Vfichigan NOW! is to increase the effectiveness and sustainability of the organizations served, including enhancing their ability to provide quality service, expand their organizations, diversify funding and create collaborations. For more information, please review the hand out that Charlene distributed. Charlene reported that Southeast Michigan continues to exceed its member recruitment goals with 43 new members for August through September- the annual goal is 7 5. Charlene took this time to recognize MNA Board Intern, Taryn McFarlane, whose intemship will be ending this month. MNA would like to thank you for all of you time and efforts. Public Policy Committee Report Erin Skene reported that the Public Policy Committee met on November 27, 2007, and recommends that the l'viNA Board of Trustees adopt the following resolution as the MCC Policy Statement: 7/w Michigan Nonprofit Association supports public policy that enhances service as an educational means to promote lifelong civic engagement as well as encourage recruitment and retention ofstudents in Higher Education. A motion was made by Ed Blews and seconded by N. Charles that the above MCC Policy statement be adopted. Motion carried. �Next, Erin reported that the Southeast Michigan Regional Policy Council has launched a survey to gauge the policy issues of concern to nonprofits in the area. Initial results indicate that nonprofits are most interested in MNA advocating against cuts in state and federal funding. Erin reported that the Southeast Michigan Council will hold several legislative breakfasts in Janumy and February. Please see your Board report for more information or contact Erin Skene or Tiffany Aurora. Diversifying Funding Sources Sam Singh distributed information on MNA's revenue streams. Sam noted that in order to keep the rapid pace of growth, MNA will need to build new revenue generating resources. MNA researched offering extended insurance services to its members, but with I ,000 members, it became apparent that MNA doesn't have the membership base to negotiate substantial saving in the area of insurance. Sam noted that after several conversations, it was apparent the Michigan Retailers Association (MRA) has the strongest programs and histmy and has been providing service to over 5,500 retail business for over two decades. The type of programs MNA can look at implementing in 2008, in partnership with the MRA are: dental care benefits, delta vision, workers comp insurance, Fed Ex shipping, credit card processing, Web-based credit card processing and natural gas program. Sam talked about corporate funding and stated that MNA is currently reexamining its relationships with its existing corporate partners and funders and targeting a small number of new corporate relations. Many corporations might not be able to fund MNA's programs with sizable grants, but asking them to become a corporate member at $1,000 to show their support of nonprofit organizations and voluntecrismmight be more acceptable. The recruitment of these new corporate members would be a function of the Fund Development Committee, MNA Board of Trustees and lv!NA Upper Management Team. Sam said that MNA has been successfhl in the past few years in generating fee-for-service revenue to nm educational programs, such as workshops, conference programs and basic consulting services. MNA needs to aggressively add to these services by creating a consulting consortium. The consulting consortium would have a group of experienced consultants that would be matched with nonprofit clients by MNA for a fee. Their service would include, Executive transitions, Merger and Acquisitions, Human Resources Management and Strategic Planning and Strategic Restructuring. Kyle thanked Sam for the wonderful job that he has done in diversifying revenue for lv!NA throughout the years, bringing us to where MNA is today. Fund Advancement Committee Report Justin King reported that MNA has a goal to raise $1.1 million. At this time, MNA has raised $494,355 and has a balance of $608,645 to raise and that the focus is to find additional fi.mders for the Strategic Fund. Justin noted that many members have asked how they can participate in the work of the Michigan Nonprofit Association to strengthen the sector. The Michigan �Nonprofit Strategic Fund was developed to provide a method in which participants can donate to increase the capacity of the nonprofit sector in Michigan. Justin reported that letters have been sent to all MNA Board members soliciting donations to the MNA Strategic Fund. A high percentage of Board participation is helpful when soliciting outside funders. Next, David Swenson reported that information has been sent to potential sponsors and exhibitors for the 2008 MNA SuperConfcrcnce. Please let David know if you have any additional leads in either of these areas. Farewell to Sam Singh The former and current Chairs of the MNA Board and all the trustees participated in a tribute to Sam Singh for his decade of exemplary service as President and CEO of Michigan Nonprofit Association. COMPLETED Objective Implement an ongoing system for culture integration and organizational planning. Activities and Outcomes I. Engage a monthly and ongoing meeting process for staff to create an effective work environment • 2. Assess organizational structuring on quarterly basis for maximum accountability, efficiency and effectiveness • 3. Suggestions from the team continue to be advanced to senior management for consideration and implementation. Staff developed and is implementing the employee evaluation system that includes uniform position descriptions, evaluation procedures and performance measures. The senior management team is reviewing all staff this quarter. This system was implemented Janumy, 2008. Initiate a long-term strategic planning process that involves members, funders, board members, affiliates and staff. • Working with staff to develop goals for consideration by full Board at their March, 2008 retreat. �Goal #2 Membership: Increase overall membership participation and satisfaction IN PROCESS Objective Develop systems and products to increase membership and retention. Activities I. 2. Build a business plan for business services including insurance plans, loaned executives, shared space, accounting and human resources. • Secured one new non-member revenue generating relationship with Chubb Insurance. • Awaiting proposal from the Michigan Retailers Association • Continuing discussions with Capitol Region Community Foundation and Capital Area United Way on shared space model. Developed a draft business model framework. • Shared services model on hold (HR, Accounting, Loaned Executive, etc.) Realign marketing and communication to support outreach to existing and potential members • 3. Merged the Membership Services and Marketing areas to focus on developing and retaining members throughout the organization including MNA and affiliates. Develop an evaluation and tracking system for membership services to track member satisfaction. • Membership staff has taken efforts to survey the current membership to determine their needs, satisfaction with current services and needs for the future. • The staff convened the membership committee of the Board to develop and implement the systems necessaty to increase retention of members and increase the overall numbers to I ,250 (current membership is approximately I ,000). 2 �Goal #3 Philanthropy: Reintegrate service and volunteerism, and newly integrate technology into MNA mission and operations IN PROCESS Objective Align MNA mission and structures to effectively reflect the merger of CMA Activities I. The organization structure calls for "shared services and support" within the organization. This activity will be included in the Membership Services and Marketing plan. Managed services NPower Michigan successfidly launched managed teclmology services in late 2007. Intended for nonprofit organizations without filii-time technology staff, NPower Michigan provides clients access to help desk services nonnally only available in larger corporations: a toll-free number to access a help desk (24 hours a day, 7 days a week), remote monitoring and assistance, as well as security software and monitoring. Airfoil, a public relations firm specializing in technology companies, assisted NPower with developing a case study (see attached) on the service. As of January 2008, five nonprofits had adopted the service, comprising 40 desktops and 6 servers. We anticipate continued demand for this service, and project that we will have 50 clients on this se1vice in 2009, comprising about 400 desktops and 35 servers. NPower Michigan now makes the service available to all Michigan Nonprofit Association members with at least six and no more than fifty computers. Fees involve costs of an initial technology assessment, plus on-going monthly fees of$40 per desktop and $100 per server. We plan to bring MNA onto the service in July 2008. 2. Webinar and Workshops across the state NPower Michigan will deliver a series of 14 wcbinars on a range of technology topics during 2008. Additional workshops and technology assessments arc scheduled in Battle Creek, Detroit, Jackson, Marquette, and Traverse City. 3. NPowerNetwork All NPower Michigan staff will be attending an NPower meeting on March 19 in New Orleans. The staff will also attend the NTEN, the nonprofit technology network, conference on March 2021. Mark Shaw and Adam King will attend the first network-wide training on a standardized technology assessment methodology in Charlotte, NC in May. This is one of the networks' first steps in standardizing services across the country. Future fimding from Microsoft will be linked to participation in this and other network standardization efforts. �4. Financial Received $25,000 in funding from AT&T to create a Communication Technology Purchasing Guide. Kresge Foundation approved a three year, $300,000 request to support updates and expansion of NPower Michigan's current Technology Purchasing Guide, deliver TcchTrek to 30 Detroit-based arts and culture related nonprofits, and to subsidize an initial year of the managed services for some nonprofit organizations. Bill Liebold is leading an initiative intended to recmit new corporate sponsors ofNPower Michigan. The goal is to bring on 20-30 new companies as supporters at the $1,000 - $2,500 level. �NPower-Michigan League Case Study Michigan League for Human Services: NPower Managed Services Model Provides Nonprofit Low Touch, High Impact Tech Support The Michigan League for Human Services (MLHS) is a statewide citizens' non-profit organization dedicated to education, research and advocacy for the benefit of low income and other vulnerable citizens in the state of Michigan. Challenge In operation since 1912, the Michigan League for Human Services (MLHS) was progressive in its approach to supporting disadvantaged persons throughout the state, but years behind in the technologies it used to connect with others, conduct research and cany out critical functions as an organization. As a nonprofit working with the government and its policymakers to advocate on behalf of Michigan's most vulnerable citizens, it was crucial for the MLHS to have reliable technology infrastructure and support in place. However, the nonprofit could only expand and improve its teclmology hardware, software and support services to the degree it had the time and money. Over time, the MLHS grew from sharing three computers on a limited network to placing an email-ready computer on the desk of every staff member. Despite this progress, the MLHS still struggled; an internal staff member was acting as the default technology guru, and a series of crippling email and data backup incidences showcased the need for a comprehensive plan, developed and managed by an organization whose core competency was IT for nonprofit organizations. Solution Michigan League for Human Services' leadership attended an NPower training workshop and learned about the value of a well-devised technology plan. At MLHS's request, NPower technology consultants made an ousite visit and analyzed nonprofit office's teclmology situation. NPower then recommended first steps the organization should take to get on sure footing, from a tech perspective. NPower not only counseled the MLHS on the fundamentals that had been lacking -- including up-to-date hardware and software and a stable server- but it also conducted extensive training for the MLHS staff on the proper use of the new teclmologies. For several years after, MLHS contracted with NPower to provide one day of on-site service and troubleshooting each month. Technology was running smoothly and the relationship between the two nonprofits was strong- so why mess with success? Because, sometimes less is more. In spring of2007, NPower piloted its offsite, managed services model with the MLHS. In themy, a remote, but immediately responsive, IT support team would mean savings of time and resources for the MLHS. If executed properly, the managed services approach would provide the MLHS with more timely, consistent and comprehensive technology support, via a toll-free support lwtline for troubleshooting, complemented by automated computer maintenance and security tasks. �Impact In short, NPower's managed services model liberated the MLHS to do what it does bestadvocate for the state's disadvantaged citizens. The pilot program was met with such positive feedback, that in winter of2008, the organization formally launched the model to the rest of its existing client base, and as an offering to new clients. Lary Wells, executive assistant to the MLHS president, says the relatively hands-off approach has provided his organization with even speedier and wony-fi'ee IT support. "We rely on NPower to take control of our IT and keep it ru111ling seamlessly," Wells said. "The remote services arrangement only improves what was an excellent service to begin with. We appreciate the increased access to and responsiveness by their staff, and we've found that it further lifts the burden of concem regarding the stability and ftmctionality of our technologies. More than ever, we can focus on supporting our constituents, as opposed to our office technology." While MLHS is a single example of the advantages to NPower' s managed services approach, ultimately, the efficiencies realized bubble up to a much broader audience. Adam King, NPower Michigan consultant, explains, "As a direct result of our managed services approach, NPower consultants will have the time and resources to devote to providing more strategic counsel, and to a greater number ofnonprofits than ever. Compact Magazine J'vfCC launched the first Compact Magazine at the MCC Council of Presidents Meeting on J'vfarch I 0, 2008. For the first addition we highlighted the intersection between Access and Success, and Service and the potential of educating college students not only for giving of their -t:i:rne and talent, but also their treasure through a philanthropic life. MCC plans to use the magazine to educate funders, legislators, business leaders and our own membership of the potential and power of our work in educating college students for their civic life. These tlu·ee projects will help our campuses to engage stu.dents and faculty interested in service, as a teaching and leaming tool in targeted ways, to address Michigan's pressing need in increasing the number of college graduates and to help disadvantaged youth. The projects include: Investing in College Futures Project: MCC is in year two of a three year grant funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service Learn and Serve America �Program and The McGregor Fund, to give our campuses grants to help them develop projects that engage current college students on service to disadvantaged youth to help the youth see college as part of their future and study the effects on the college students in retention. DHS Foster Care!MCC Partnership: MCC has partnered with the Michigan Depa1iment of Human Services to help foster care youth, and patiicularly those that age out of the Foster Care system, find their way to college. MCC has hosted summits on the issue to introduce colleges and universities to the special needs of our foster cm·e youth in coming and staying in college. MCC and DHS are looking at next steps to link foster care youth serving agencies to campuses across the state. Drop Out Prevention: MCC and Volunteer Centers of Michigan, along with many other statewide patiners are coming together to host a Drop Out Prevention Summit on October 20, 2008 in Lansing. This summit will encourage teatns, including higher education partners, to come together to discuss the local and state issues ar1d opportunities related to the Michigan drop out issues. Money provide by both America's Promise and State Fa1m Insurance will help teams to come to the summit and develop plans of action for addressing the issues and individuals effected by not finishing high school. MCC is continuing to look for ways to help with college access and success issues across the state. Example of recent MCC Programs and Events Februmy 7-8, 2008- Tlte Institute: Service-Learning cmd Civic Engagement By now you have probably heard that MCC' s two day conference of faculty, staff, and administrators from higher education and K-12 institutions across Michigan was cancelled due to weather. Central Michigan University closed Febmary i 11 due to snow and blizzard conditions. Even though we had to cancel the events, MCC ar1d MCSC already had some conference registrants that were in Mt. Pleasant. At the last minute we were able to hold a modified conference, with two of our three keynote speakers, for the 125 registrants that could come. An open space format and the help of the hotel conference staff allowed us ar1 opportunity to still have a quality conference. Upcoming Events Saturday, April 5, 2008 - Outstanding Student Service Awards Each year MCC member campus staff and faculty, college students, their fi'iends and fatnilies gather to recognize and honor the work of college students across the state for their work in the community. The MCC network has honored more than 700 students in the past eleven years. We m·e delighted to continue this annual tradition to commend students for devoting their time and talents to building stronger, safer and connected communities. This year over 600 students were nominated ar1d 159 students, fi·om 20 member institutions, completed applications. Student nominees will be considered for one of the following awards: The OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY IMPACT AWARD honors up to five undergraduate and one graduate student in Michigan who have made service an integral patt of their college experience by their significant contribution to community resources. The recipient's effmts build partnerships between their campuses and communities to demonstrate personal reflection and a commitment to lifelong engagement. The COMMITMENT TO SERVICE AWARD recognizes one student per MCC member campus for either the breadth or the depth of his/her community involvement or service experience(s) and the demonstration of meaningful reflection. Recipients, for example, may ( �have devoted multiple years to one program or have demonstrated their leadership by making multiple contributions to her/his institution and community tln·ough community service involvement. The HEART AND SOUL AWARD recognizes undergraduate and graduate students for their time, effort and personal commitment to their community through service. The MICHIGAN HUMANITARIAN AWARD recognizes three undergraduate students who demonstrate an innovative approach to building or enhancing campus-based eff01ts to address community needs using diverse strategies (service, se1vice-learning, policy work, advocacy, etc.). Listening Tour Update Although the final piece is not yet completed, the outline and primary future directions have been completed and clarified with constituents through in person meetings and conference calls. All listening tour participants were invited to be prut of the clarifying process. The next steps are to develop a vision statement with the board, complete the final piece, convene a strategic planning committee, propose a strategic plan in vision and goals to the board in June 2008, and then determine with staff the best ways to complete the goals over the next five years over the summer, in this order. The Membership Committee recommends the following structure for consideration by the MNA Board of Trustees: Board Engagement: o Change committee name to Marketing and Member Services Committee. o Role of committee during 2008 will be to assess current membership structure and desired goals; identify measurable objectives related to impact with and for marketing and membership; and to outline MNA's membership structure (categories, fee structure) for the 2009-10 fiscal year. Each organization will use the funds to create innovative, sustainable strategies to mobilize volunteers to address specific community needs. The grant recipients were part of a competitive application process to receive VIG funding. Thitteen . organizations from across the state received VIG funding from a total of.4?_ ()rganizations that applied. The MCSC identified three funding priority areas: mentoring, engaging Baby Boomers in volunteering, and engaging all youth in service, particularly those in disadvantaged circumstances. The following organizations received funding: Ann Arbor Center for lnde]Jendent Living- Washtenaw Youth Mentoring Coalition received a $10,000 grant to enhance its mentoring efforts by increasing public awareness, developing partnerships, increasing recruitment and refen·als of potential mentors and enhancing the capacity of local mentoring organizations. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Flint received a $20,000 grant to support mentoring marketing and recmitment activities in Genesee County. Camp Fire USA West Michigan Council located in Grand Rapids received an $I 8,242 grant to support Operation SAGE: Seniors Active, Giving & Emiching volunteer recruitment and retention program. Catholic Services of Macomb in Clinton Township received a $9,252 grant to expand their capacity to recruit and place Baby Boomer volunteers and expand partnerships for volunteer placement. Communities in Schools of Detroit, Inc. received at $20,000 grant to recmit, train, place, and retain 200 Baby Boomer volunteers to serve in metro Detroit schools to tutor at-risk children through the readetroit initiative. Human Development Commission located in Caro received a $19,108 grant to implement the Volunteer Leadership in our Community (VLOC) project. Kalamazoo Communities in Schools received a $6, 196 grant to increase the distribution of the Retention and Recmitment Resource Kit and build a network of business partners to increase resources and engage potential volunteers. Little Brother- Friends of the Elderly located in Hancock received a $10,984 grant to help the program purchase and integrate a new volunteer database that will replace and improve upon an outdated system. (more) �Oak Park Business and Education Alliance received a $20,000 grant to students transitioning from 5th and G'h grade at three local elementary and middle schools. The project will also implement the Faces of the Future mentoring program for 9'h -II <h grade students. United Way of Northwest Michigan Volunteer Center located in Traverse City received a $20,000 grant that will build and strengthen the vhiual capacity of its Volunteer Center in order to significantly increase volunteerism among boomers and youth. United Way Volunteer Center of Chippewa County in Saulte St. Marie received a $12,400 grant to prepare student teachers, via an intensive training opportunity, to conduct meaningful and effective service-leaming activities. Volunteer Center of Southwest Michigan located in Niles received a $10,839 grant to help the organization utilize an innovative strategy to connect mentors with organizations. Volunteers in Prevention, Probation and Prisons, Inc. in Detroit received a $20,000 grant to increase mentoring for youth that have incarcerated parents in five Detroit neighborhoods. Since 1998, Michigan's VIG, administered by the Michigan Community Service Commission, has provided state-funded grants to increase the capacity of nonprofit organizations so they are better equipped to mobilize volunteers. ### ( �MICHIGAN COMMUNI1Y Upcoming MCSC Events SERVICE COMMISSION AmeriCorps Week- May 11 -18, 2008 AmeriCorps Week is a weeklong, nationwide event designed to bring more Americans into service, salute AmeriCorps members and alums for their powerful impact, and thank the community partners who make AmeriCorps possible. AmeriCorps Week is meant to engage as many local people and organizations as possible, including AmeriCorps members, alumni, grantee organizations, public officials, local media, community partners, and friends. Michigan's AmeriCorps programs are planning various AmeriCorps Week projects throughout the state. Russ Mawby Signature Service Project- June 11-12,2008 The Russ Mawby Signature Service Project is an annual event. Each year AmeriCorps members from all around the state join together for two days of training, team building, and service. Currently 85 schools, totaling 380 classrooms in the state of Michigan, including four school districts, consisting of Jackson, Romulus, Shelby and Carson City are participating in The LEAGUE. Update The LEAGUE just completed its February event, Art From the Heart, which focuses on compassion and creativity. 99 classrooms reported participating in the event, totaling almost $10,000 in value returned back to their communities in the students time, talent and treasure. Opportunities The Volunteer Center of Chippewa County has recently been awarded a Volunteer Investment Grant fi·om the Michigan Community Service Commission to partner with The LEAGUE to launch EveiJ'Oile Can Serve. This program will train, equip and encourage our latest generation ofK-12 teachers to weave service and service learning into the fabric of how they teach. An academy will be delivered to education students prior to their year of student teaching, fall 2008, to provide them training on The LEAGUE and all of its resources. The LEAGUE Michigan had the opportunity to present to over 40 Michigan Community Foundation CEO's during their retreat in February, with the hopes of having them serve as conveners and funders in their community in the future. Moving Forward The LEAGUE Michigan in partnership with Learn & Serve will be hosting a Service-Learning Camp for students involved in both programs. The purpose of the Camp is to develop students' knowledge ofservice-leaming, leadership and to create a plan of how The LEAGUE and Learn & Serve will be integrated into their school for the 2008-2009 school year. ln addition to the Camp, The LEAGUE Michigan and Learn & Serve in partnership with Grand Valley State University, will be hosting a Summer Institute for teachers to develop servicelearning curriculum to be used in their classrooms and to enhance the Learning to Give website.
