In recent meetings of the community service coordinators and the student
community action network, representatives reported on a number of
exciting activities that are underway at MCC institutions. To give you a
flavor for these exciting service related activities, I have attached the
campus reports from the minutes of both meetings.
Also, in an effort to provide the services most important to campus compact
institutions the following survey was sent to campus representatives in early
October. The results ofthis survey are being compiled currently.
I have made arrangements to visit all of the compact campuses before the
end of the calendar year. I will visit with each institution's president,
community service coordinator, key faculty members engaged in service
learning, and students that have been involved in service learning and
service activities.

Campus Updates

Grand Rapids Community College: They will hold a date auction on Oct. 20 and benefit concert on Oct.
27 to raise money to take a service learning trip to New York City Dec. 26.
Alma: Will be going to a selective/competitive work study program due to the success of the program and
in working with agencies. Their service learning courses (15-20) are now designated in the course
catalogues. Joel from Kellogg will be speaking on volunteerism and leadership in America at Alma on
Nov. 20- flyers will be sent to CSC's. That same evening there will be a hunger banquet that same
evening as part of the Global Hunger and Poverty program.
Central Michigan University: The provost has been taking Denise to many meetings with him. She
appreciated the opportunity and still finds their faculty to be the toughest audience. They are planning an
alternative spring break and volunteer fair this semester.
University of Michigan: U ofM will have 60 Alternative Spring Break Site Leaders (31 sits 2 leaders per
site). This was the first year that there have been faculty and staff site leaders since it is a year-long
commitment. Great fundraising idea: students raise 80% of the budget by cleaning the football and
basketball stadiums. Doing Into the Streets four times a year for different populations (freshmen, campuswide, MLK holiday, and staff that get release time). Anita is also going to send out flyers for the speakers
coming to campus (Alice Walker's daughter, Greg Luganis...). A Jeanne Gray update: she is living in
Denver and just took a job at a minimum security facility for boys doing case and group counseling.
Wayne State University: Just completed Campus Plunge using 5 sites. Have been thinking about a mid
winter retreat, probably a nice indoor facility, chance to re energize. Planning an alternative spring break.
The Planned Parenthood Founder will be speaking on Nov. 1 (breakfast is at 8:30, lecture at 9:00) and all
are invited.
Oakland Community College: COOL (student organization) planning service projects at Ronald
McDonald house and soup kitchen. SVLP is working with high school student tutoring program. They
have planned a Halloween party (Oct. 21) and participation in Make a Difference Day (Oct. 28), Into the
Streets (Oct. 7), and Students Against Hunger program "Empty Bowl" where many student groups worked
together. Students from Macomb were also involved.
Grand Valley State University: Has a new volunteer center! Working on Break Away site leader training
on Nov. 11 -open to all. The Break Away conference will be in Nashville Nov. 20-22. This is the third
year for Leadership and Service - connected with four campuses. Public school teachers and AYF cosponsoring. They have 15 new courses funded through the philanthropy center. Jay is looking for a
graduate assistant looking to get their Masters degree in the Education program. The Habitat Chapter got
all of the Dept. of Safety's lost and found items donated and had an auction.
Adrian: Over 600 hours of service were provided by the freshmen class in one day. Adrian is working
on connecting with volunteer agencies, volunteer centers in town.
Lansing Community College: Moved their Volunteer Services area to Student Life office. They were
involved in Welcome Week activities (students very pleased). Terri helped with the volunteer fair (thank
you) and it was very successful. LCC will be involved in Make a Difference Day. The Leadership
�Academy has 15first year students enrolled (each receiving a scholarship). Nex1 year their will be two
classes (1st and 2nd year students). There wiU a1so be discussion groups in the summer with faculty, staff
and student participants. The staff has a1so attended many classes to talk about service learning.
Western Michigan University: Enrollment is up! Service learning grants are coming through too - they
had been doing stuff for years and now it is connecting! Terri now has a graduate assistant (Randy)! She
has many students going to Break Away- anyone interested in car pooling? She has funding for a van.
They sponsored a volunteer opportunities fair where agencies met with students - eva1uations good (she
says due to the buttons). Terri worked with a group of students on teaching a class component on AIDS,
it won a national award and they are invited to go the National Honors conference to present. She has a
service component in her Interpersonal Communications class. She is working on a welfare reform
teleconference to make sure it is reformed the right way. They will be doing Into the Streets, Trick or
Treat for Loaves and Fishes with Intemationa1 Students (canned goods). They a1so do Into the Streets
twice a year. Terri spoke to each group of freshmen through the orientation department. 80% of WMU's
footba11 players are volunteering in the community. Their athletic department is very supportive.
Michigan State University: The office has moved from the student life office to career services and
placement. They do a great dea1 of work study placements. They sponsored a non-profit career fair.
They have a placement program on-line. There are over 900 local positions. Students can apply from
anywhere (on and off campus). They are keeping their fingers crossed for an mM grant. Members of
their staff spoke to the 6500 new freshmen in groups of 200 at a time. This is a very successful way for
them to get new students involved, a1though they are questioning the follow-through. The MSU Day of
Caring was huge. They will a1so be involved in Into the Streets. The students are very active and excited.
The office spends a lot of time meeting with faculty and doing many presentations. There is a service
learning requirement for some classes and the office assists with placement. They are continuing with the
internships and advisors working with them. The new faculty member in the HALE program is assisting
in doing some grant writing. The office a1so advises eight student groups with a service focus.
Andrews University: Will have their 2nd annua1 volunteer fair on Oct. 26. They will take part in Make a
Difference Day and Into the Streets. They have a partnership program with the churches where students
go back to their "home" areas during the summer and work for the churches. They get money from the
churches, campus, and fundraise so that when they come back they have a stipend waiting for them. The
Upton Foundation has given them a $90,000 incorporate community, service and leadership into the
classroom. Faculty members get $1,000 and student helpers $500. Larry said that there was an
unsolicited article written in the local paper about their office serving as a "pipeline of opportunities for
service learning" - the best publicity that he could hope for.

Albion: The college is "embattled". Faculty and administration have been working out faculty cuts due to
perceived new building. Albion will participate in Make a Difference Day on Oct. 28 where there will be
senior leaf raking done by college and community organizations. There will be a reopening of a historic
theater in town and community service events that will coincide. There had been a Special Olympic event
held on Oct. 5. The students involved in community service at Albion are having fun and t.Iying to get
more students involved. They said they are continually looking for faculty and staff support.
Oakland: Kelly Masters, the past Community Service Coordinator has gone to work for United Way
Community Services. They miss her. The Student Volunteer Leadership Program (SLVP) integrates
community service/service learning with high school students. The program took place in July and
August They attended MCC's Camp Miniwanca Service and Leadership conference and also served as
primary group leaders at the CMF camp. Their SVLP, Catholic Social Services, and Special Olympics
programs are still going strong. They will be participating in Make a Difference Day with Wayne State
and also working on Into The Streets. They are currently looking for an advisor. They, too, are looking
for ways to get faculty, staff, and administrators involved in integrating service into the curriculum.
Wavne State: Is participating in Into The Streets where they are coordinating many projects. They are
also involved in Habitat for Humanity, Break Away and National Make a Difference Day.
Kalamazoo: Also involved in Habitat for Humanity, Senior Citizens bingo, taking latch key kids to the
planetarium, vets hospital and pumpkin carving.
Eastern Michigan: Are having their Big Kid Connection that will involve 115 volunteers that will work
in the high schools. They are also involved in Best Buddies which is a program that pairs college students
with mentally disabled people in the community. They have planned an Alternative Spring Break (ASB)
program. SAHA (Students Against Hunger and Homelessness}, a Martin Luther King project and Make a
Difference Day are all programs that are happening on EMU's campus.
Alma: There is a new service leadership coordinator on campus. SOS, a student run organization in the
past is now possibly getting merged with the Volunteer Center. This organization worked to bring faculty
and students together. Alma has a student that sits on the faculty board that makes decisions on academic
classes that have a service component. Alma will be involved in Make a Difference Day. The Volunteer
Fair will be an open house this year where 12 service departments will have tables set up and a lot of
volunteers will be involved. Alma is also sponsoring a lock-in with Central Michigan and their SADD
chapter.
Western Michigan: WMU is participating in Into The Streets where they will be providing transportation
for those who don't have rides. The Greek system is highly involved in the planning and sponsorship.
Aaron Cantrell will be there as a speaker. They are hoping to have other colleges come and volunteer
with them. They will be having a candle fund-raiser, participating in Care Center bingo, doing door
hangers, and trick or treating for canned goods that will involve their international students. They will
furnish participants with rolls of film so that they can take pictures of their experiences. They will also be
providing breakfast and dinner at the end of the day. They have eight sites lined up for ASB's and already
have their site leaders chosen. Their board has expanded to include members from RHA and international
affairs.
�Grand Valley State University: GVSU will also have a trick or treat for canned goods for all of west
Michigan. The food they collect will supply two Grand Rapids soup kitchens for a year! GVSU is hosting
a ASB site leader training open to all in November. They have between six and eight sites selected. They
are participating in Best Buddies and report a host of new coordinators. Their structure and number of
volunteers allows for two volunteers per issue (ASB, Best Buddies, PALS, Hunger and Homelessness,
Habitat for Humanity, Literacy, Seniors, Youth, Volunteer Corps, Substance Abuse, Health, and
Disabilities). All were impressed with Becky's ability to rattle all of them om She also stated that faculty
involvement was a great challenge for them. GVSU is working to get service built into the curriculum
starting with freshmen seminar and orientation.

VCM Quarterly Report
Below you will find some key highlights of our work this past quarter.
Volunteer Generation Fund Grant Update
Over the last 3 months Volunteer Centers of Michigan (VCM) staff has worked in partnership
with the Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC) to provide support and resources as
the Volunteer Generation Grantees have gone live with the HandsOn Connect volunteer
registration software. Staff facilitated a discussion during the Volunteer Generation grantee
September meeting to identify future training and resources needs. VCM and MCSC staffs are
currently working to identify training topics and a schedule for the 2012 grant year.
A variety of toolkit and resource materials have been developed for use by the grantees as they
train their staff and community partners. Four toolkits are currently available through the
“resource” tab on the mivolunteers.org website. Two additional toolkits have been developed
and are ready to be uploaded to the site. The toolkits titles include:

Volunteer Retention
The three starred (*) presentations have been uploaded to slideshare.net so that other
organizations have access to the information. The Slideshare site indicates the three
presentations have had more than 500 views with 8 embeds. The Slideshare site gives credit to
MNA and provides a link to the MNA Facebook page. In addition to the PowerPoint
presentation each toolkit provides trainer notes, a resource page, as well as at least one additional
resource or tool, and a related fact sheet. Each fact sheet is designed to stand alone so that each
could be distributed separately from the presentation materials. Trainer, Sandra Miller, has also
responded to requests for resources and support by the individual grantees.
�VCM has engaged a new consultant to help support our work with the Volunteer Generation
Fund grantees, Chelsea Martin began her work with us in November. She will be instrumental in
providing additional support to our 14 HOC affiliates in the following areas:
Facilitate training calls and webinars
Maintain regular communication with HOC staff
Develop promotional materials for the HOC system
Coordinate outreach to HOC Volunteer Connector Organizations
Support the ongoing work related to the development and implementation of the
statewide HOC portal
Support for National Days of Service initiatives
HandsOn Connect Volunteer Management Technology
Several communities in Michigan are in the process of deploying HandsOn Connect, a
groundbreaking volunteer management technology. Unlike previous volunteer management
systems, this new platform is located “in the clouds,” allowing all information to be stored on the
internet. VCM and the MCSC are working together to have 14 Michigan communities operating
with HandsOn Connect by early 2012. The following centers are already live with the new
system.

HandsOn Connect Statewide Volunteer Portal
HandsOn Connect has opened the door for a new and exciting opportunity for the entire state of
Michigan. This winter, the MCSC and VCM will continue our work to enhance our first phase of
a statewide volunteer portal. This will be a one stop access point for anyone to find volunteer
opportunities in Michigan. The volunteer portal will include a widget embedded on the VCM
and MCSC websites, with search results being housed at www.volunteermichigan.org.
The portal will serve as the entry point for volunteers to search for projects from all communities
using HandsOn Connect. Here volunteers can review search results at the state level, click
through to view project details, and sign up for specific projects at the local level. It will allow
aggregated data feeds from other technology platforms, including All For Good, the national
volunteer search engine used by Serve.gov. HandsOn Connect will provide robust reporting and
analytics that can be collected locally, as well as statewide.
�VCM VISTA Project Update
In the current quarter, VCM VISTAs have made huge strides building capacity for their
volunteer centers to meet community needs and carry out poverty alleviation initiatives. In
addition to providing community partners with volunteer management training, VCM VISTAs
have forged new partnerships between their centers and community organizations as well as
expanded upon existing partnerships in an effort to engage new volunteers to serve during the
2011 September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance.
Teresa Zbiciak, serving with the Heart of West Michigan United Way Volunteer Center, assisted
with the annual Day of Caring, which engaged over 1,600 volunteers who served in excess of
5,000 hours throughout the greater Grand Rapids Community. Volunteers were recruited from
46 different businesses and community organizations. Eighty-One different service projects were
completed for 58 host agencies and schools with an estimated dollar value of $106,800!
Anthony Sacco with Volunteer Lenawee!, worked diligently to develop volunteer positions and
coordinate volunteer responsibilities with partners including the City of Adrian, the William G.
Thompson House, Moe’s Pizzeria, Adrian Public Library, the Lenawee YOUTH Council, and
the Michigan Community Service Commission to coordinate a canned food drive. The project
enlisted the help of local partner agencies that collected canned food contributions and recruited
volunteers to create sculptures using the cans. The proceeds and canned food were donated to the
South Central Michigan Food Bank.
Benjamin Crockett with Char-Em United Way assisted in implementing an annual Day of
Caring, which included partnering with two county agencies on aging to determine the needs of
local elderly residents. Twenty-one elderly homes were fixed up and manicured thanks to 20
teams of 150 volunteers – not including all of Charlevoix High School’s students! Volunteers
were also utilized on twenty-eight additional projects that addressed such community needs as
hunger and park beautification.
Matthew Reaume, VISTA Leader with Volunteer Centers of Michigan, assisted in organizing
and implementing the nation’s largest single-day service project on 9/11 by working with a
collaborative committee (A-OK Detroit) comprising representatives from interfaith and local
community service organizations. The event encompassed 19 separate projects, and engaged
733 volunteers, 32 of which came from military families and were led by 80 volunteer leaders.
As a result, over 150 “Thank You” cards were sent to active military and veterans. Over 300
backpacks filled with school supplies have been given to local Detroit students. Seventy arts &
craft supply kits will allow over 2,100 Detroit students to engage their creativity as part of their
daily learning. Over 2,000 boxes of food were assembled, which will feed over 2,500
individuals (mostly homebound seniors) who face hunger. Over 5,450 individuals directly
benefitted from this project.
In the 2010-2011 Program Year, VCM VISTA’s have had the following impact:
Leveraged $5,993 in direct financial support, and $43,131 worth of in-kind contributions
for their volunteer centers

Fostered 42 new partnerships with business, faith-based, and community organizations
including 8 K-12 schools and 6 Higher Ed institutions
Created 25 opportunities for 37 volunteer leaders
Created 47 different skills-based volunteer opportunities which 156 individuals filled
Engaged 279 collegiate volunteers who served 1,307 hours of service
Engaged 137 Baby Boomers to volunteer 1,641hours
Engaged 2,373 community volunteers who served 11,033 hours of service
Engaged 4,450 volunteers to serve in National Days of Service
Provided 12 volunteer management trainings to community partners represented by 219
individuals
Provided 37 public awareness events aimed at increasing the understanding of those
living in poverty, reaching 821 individuals
VCM*VISTA Grant Award
VCM was awarded a grant through the HandsOn Network to support five AmeriCorps VISTA
members for the 2011-2012 grant years. Host sites will be located in: the Detroit Cities of
Service Office, United Way of St. Clair County Volunteer Center, Resource Genesee and the
Volunteer Center of Southwest Michigan.
In addition, we also recruited and placed four VISTA members through the Corporation for
National and Community Service state office. These VISTAs will start their year of service in
November in the following locations: HandsOn Battle Creek, Heart of West Michigan United
Way, Char-Em United Way and the Eastern Upper Peninsula United Way. VISTA member,
Anthony Sacco will continue serving at Volunteer Lenawee for a third year.
VCM also recruited a new VISTA Leader, who will begin his year of service in December, 2011
and will be located in the MNA Lansing office. VCM is preparing to submit a VISTA renewal
application to the Corporation for National and Community Service, which will have a focus on
supporting volunteer centers to create economic opportunities for their communities.

A. Voter Engagement
Secretary of State Ruth Johnson unveiled her election reform priorities in October. The Senate took
up SB 750-754 recently. MNA testified opposing SB 751 and SB 754 because they created large
barriers to voting for underrepresented voters that our members often serve and engage. SB 754
would require organizations that engage in voter registration to register with the Secretary of State
and go through a training before they could engage in those activities. However, at the beginning of
this week, Sen. Dave Robertson introduced an omnibus bill that is worse and could be the
replacement for the multi-bill package discussed above. SB750 – SB754 was passed out of
committee with a favorable recommendation and for immediate effect. It will likely go up on the
Senate Floor calendar before the legislature breaks for the holidays.
We are reconvened the voter engagement table. At the meeting, we laid out broad strategies and
goals. Groups also shared their initial plans and goals.
B. Nonprofit Caucus Update
We convened the co-chairs together for a strategy breakfast on November 10th to discuss how to
move their agenda forward.
SB107 – a bill to clarify the exemption for fundraising expenses for nonprofits and also a priority for
the Caucus was voted out of the Senate Finance committee unanimously. Christina is working with
our new lobbyist, Kim Ross-Jessup at Dykema to iron out the issue Treasury has with the legislation.
State and Federal Updates
�A. State Updates
Nonprofit Day
The day was a success! We had over 150 people attend and we had great feedback from attendees
regarding the sessions and the speakers.
Redistricting
Christina is working with Martin Waymire on a poll to find out the public’s thoughts on redistricting
and what reform(s) are they looking for. This will be included in a summary of activities that
Christina is putting together.
B. Federal Updates
Super Committee
The Super Committee has failed. This means that the automatic cuts that will happen in 2013
mostly coming from Defense and Entitlements. For now, the federal charitable giving tax deduction
is protected, however, it is still vulnerable to change.
The National Council of Nonprofits’ letter campaign led to some successes for the sector as a whole:
1. Enhanced Member Relationships: A couple of State Associations have asked us for suggested
language to update their members about the campaign to protect the charitable giving
incentive. To help everyone, pasted below my signature is template language that you can
customize as an alert/update, newsletter article, or other communication.
2. Increased Membership: One State Association compared its membership roster against the
groups that signed the Nonprofit Community Letter, saw 17 new names, and already reached
out to recruit the organizations that saw the value of working together. Now is the time for you
to reach out to the nonprofits in your state that signed the Nonprofit Community Letter to invite
them to join your State Association. So please compare the list of signers against your
membership roster … and see how well the loop of “membership advances policy advances
membership” actually works! (And please let us know your successes – you’ll make Jenny and
David so proud!)
3. Enhanced Funder Relationships: The Council on Foundations and many community foundations
signed on in support of the campaign. Now would be an excellent time to reach out to those
foundations in your state that signed on directly (or indirectly through CoF) to thank them for
their support and share with them some of the work you did and results that were enjoyed.
4. Improved Policy Insights: I thought I should share this idea with you because we will be doing it
here at the National Council: gather those on staff involved in the campaign (here, that meant
everyone!) to conduct a debriefing session to review what worked and what can be improved.
We recognize that this was an extraordinary event that caused us to be innovative on the fly. So
if there is a “next time” for something like this, it would be good for us all to record the
wonderful things that worked and anticipate ways to improve any rough spots. Following your
debriefing, please share with us any insights you have for us about what we did that worked (or
didn’t work) so we can continue to improve our support for you in the field where the real
action happens. NOTE: This debriefing serves another, more immediate purpose: when you
document what worked and the positive results you gained (increased membership, enhanced
�visibility, new insights for policy issues at the state and local levels, etc.), you can (a) weave
those stories with your funders so they see the value of your State Association, (b) use those
testimonials as part of your new member recruitment packet, and (c) share the information with
us so we also can tell the story to our funders so we can continue to keep your dues low.
National Service Funding
For FY’13, the House has zeroed out the budget for national service programs and eliminated the
National Corporation for Corporation for National and Community Service. The Senate has kept the
funding level.
�Revised Draft Position Statement on Health Care Exchange Proposal
(Attachment A)
The Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA) welcomes Governor’s Snyder’s and the
Michigan Senate’s recommendations for the state health care exchange through the
Affordable Care Act (2009) to be organized as a nonprofit organization. MNA
appreciates the Governor’s active participation in the creation of the “Michigan Health
Marketplace.” MNA encourages the Governor and the Michigan Legislature to seek the
advice of the nonprofit sector on not just ensuring the governance of the Marketplace is
created to be transparent and accountable to the clients it will serve. But also to listen
and learn from the nonprofit sector on how best to serve a clientele that many of MNA
member organizations regularly serves and engages. As this policy moves forward, we
strongly urge policymakers to continue to structure the operation of the Michigan
Health Marketplace with the integrity, accountability, and dependability for the clients
it will serve.

Introductions, Welcome and Call To Order
The meeting was called to order by Chair, Dave Eisler at 10:05 a.m. He thanked everyone for
attending today‟s meeting and for everyone who took the Armory tour this morning. Dave reported
that the Amory has come a long way since last time he was there. He noted that if the Board
members haven‟t toured the Armory, they should set up a meeting with Kelley to do so. It is an
exciting time for MNA.
Next, Dave welcomed Suzanne Greenberg who is attending today‟s meeting by conference call.
Dave asked everyone in the room to introduce themselves.
Approval of the Consent Agenda
Dave Eisler asked if there is anything on the consent agenda that anyone would like to review
further. With no inquires being made, Dave requested that someone make a motion to approve.
A motion was made by Paula K. VanDam and seconded by David Price to accept the approval
of the consent agenda items which include the June 21, 2011meeting minutes, and the MNA
program reports. Motion carried.

�Presidents Report
Kyle congratulated Bill and Cam Liebold on their new family member, Mack. Kyle circulated a
photo of their new puppy to all of the Board members. Next, Kyle introduced Christina Kuo, Senior
Director of Public Policy and Public Affairs and noted that prior to joining MNA, Christina was the
Executive Director of Common Cause Michigan, a nonpartisan, nonprofit advocacy organization. In
addition, Christina has her Juris Doctorate from Thomas M. Cooley Law School and was admitted
into the Michigan bar in 2009. Kyle introduced Annie McGuigan Fenton, Manager, Capacity
Building. Annie comes to MNA with a wealth of experience in building the capacity of nonprofits
and other community groups, including over four years managing neighborhood renewal
partnerships in Belfast, Ireland.
Kyle reviewed the first quarter activities of MNA‟s Strategic Plan. Kyle reported that one item he
wanted to highlight from the Strategic Plan was the collaborative efforts of Donna Murray Brown,
Renee Zientek and Diana Algra who have been working on Serve The D. Serve The D is a survey
designed to provide a „snapshot‟ on service in Detroit and what Detroiters and other volunteers from
around Michigan are doing to revitalize the SE Michigan Region. Serve The D is open for all
Detroit area volunteers to complete online at www.servethed.org from August 28, 2011 to October
31, 2011. Data collected from Serve The D will be used by the Collaborative leadership team to
assess how those who volunteer in the Metro Detroit area are serving, where they are serving, and
what supports need to be put in place to continue encouraging service and volunteerism in Detroit.
Serve The D launched the event with a community concert with over 52,000 participants attending.
Next, Kyle reported that we have Anika Fassia, Michigan League for Human Services, and Rachid
Elabed, ACCESS, who will be talking about their organizations and their experiences. Their
presentations are part of the Mission Moment that is part of every MNA meeting agenda.
Dave Eisler thanked Anika and Rachid for their presentations and a warm round of applause
followed.
Kyle wrapped up his President‟s Report by thanking all of the Board of Directors for the time and
resources to attend the Harvard Business School. Kyle said it was a unique and valuable experience.
MNA Finance Committee Report
David Price reported for the Finance Committee in David Seaman‟s absence. He reported that the
MNA Finance Committee met and reviewed the Financial Statements for month ending June 31,
2011. David requested that Tina Bruce give a detailed update. Tina said that at this time, MNA
ended the year with a $177,000 negative balance. Tina noted that the deficit was due to lack of
income, which occurred when funding came in late and due to a decrease in interest rates. Kyle
said that expenses were keep low and that the bottom line was a timing issue, with funding coming
in later than anticipated. Kyle noted that the audit report will be given at the December 13, 2011
Board meeting.
A motion was made by David Price and seconded by Paula Cunningham to approve the unaudited Financial Statements for month ending June 31, 2011. Motion carried.

�Board Development Committee
N. Charles Andersen reported that the Board Development Committee met and reviewed the
openings on the Board of Directors. The Committee has some leads and will give an update on the
outcome at the next meeting. N. Charles requested that Kyle Caldwell give an update on the
recommendation to form an Ad Hoc Committee on Diversity and Inclusion. Kyle said that MNA
staff recommends that an Ad Hoc Committee on Diversity and Inclusion be developed to establish
diversity and inclusion as a value, priority and practice of the MNA Board of Directors. Kyle said
that Donna Murray Brown would work with the MNA Board of Directors and Diana Algra would
work with the MNA staff. And, as a team, they would work with Kyle and N. Charles Andersen to
coordinate these efforts.
A motion was made by N. Charles Andersen and seconded by John Schneider to form an Ad
Hoc Committee on Diversity and Inclusion. Motion carried.
MNA Fund Advancement Report
John Schneider reported that the annual campaign is underway and the goal is to have full MNA
Board engagement this year. John said that 12 Board members have pledged or given to date. John
noted that funders are requesting 100% Board participation when grant requests are made. A request
was made by the Board members to follow up with another donation form and to keep them
informed on their giving status. John asked Carolyn if she would share the information on the
Consumer‟s Energy Grant. Carolyn remarked that as part of Consumer‟s Energy Hallmark 125
Anniversary Celebration, they will be awarding 1.25 million dollars in grants. Carolyn noted that
MNA has been requested to submit a grant and each grant awarded will be for $125,000. Carolyn
reported that part of the grant process requires providing giving information from the Board
members. Kyle noted that MNA‟s grant proposal to Consumer‟s Energy will be a request to fund
the Nonprofit Center at the Armory. Bill Liebold reported that the Highway T Advisory Board has
had 100% participation for the past two years.
MNA Public Policy Committee
Rob Collier said that the MNA Public Policy Committee met and has four action items to bring
before the MNA Board of Director:
Support SB 0107 – Position Statement on the Sales Tax Exemption for Fundraising
Purposes. MNA is concerned that tax law clearly ensures that charitable tax exempt
organizations and their expenditures are treated consistently. Also, MNA seeks to ensure
that nonprofits have sufficient resources to meet their missions.
A motion to support the Position Statement on SB 0107 was made by Rob Collier and
seconded by David Price. Motion carried.
Support the Position Statement on Governor Snyder‟s Heath Care Exchange Proposal. MNA
hopes that the Governor will be an active participant in the creation of the “Michigan Health
Marketplace.” MNA encourages the Governor and the Michigan Legislature to seek the
advice of the nonprofit sector. MNA strongly encourages Governor Snyder to organize the
Michigan Health Marketplace with the integrity, accountability and dependability that is
owes to the clients it will serve.

�A motion to support the Position Statement on Governor Snyder’s Health Care Exchange
Proposal was made by Rob Collier and seconded by Bill Liebold. Motion carried
Support Position Statement on election laws and policies that make voting air and accessible
for all citizens. MNA actively supports election laws and policies that make voting fair and
accessible for all citizens.
A motion to support the Position Statement on Voter Engagement was made by Rob Collier
and seconded by David Price. Motion carried.
Support Position Statement on the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction. MNA urges
the Joint Select Committee to be open to the input of citizens and organizations. MNA also
believes the nonprofit sector must proactively engage members of the Committee to help
inform their decision-making.
A motion to support the Position Statement on the Joint Select Committee on Deficit
Reduction was made by Rob Collier and seconded by John Schneider. Motion carried.
Next, Christina Kuo reviewed the Nonprofit Day Agenda scheduled for September 29, 2011 at the
Radisson in Lansing. The theme this year is Building Opportunities in Challenging Times. Christina
reported that the three keynote speakers are, Dan Gilmartin, CEO and President of the Michigan
Municipal League; George Pillsbury, founder and director of Nonprofit Vote; and Maya Enista,
CEO of Mobilize.org. In addition, the Center for Michigan will launch its newest Community
Conversation on education on Nonprofit Day. And, saving the best part of last, the Capitol Tour
will be guided by MNA Board of Director, Ed Blews, who currently chairs the Friends of the
Capitol (the organization dedicated to the preservation of the beautifully restored Michigan State
Capitol). The tour with Ed is always highly rated on MNA‟s Nonprofit Day Evaluation form.
Other
Kyle requested that Bill Liebold give a presentation on partnership discussions with Data Driving
Detroit. Bill reported that MNA was approached by Kurt Metzger, Director of Data Driven Detroit
(D3) about a possible partnership. D3 is currently housed at City Connect Detroit. D3 wants a better
home and the opportunity to be deeper in the nonprofit sector in the Detroit region and statewide.
Bill noted that a thoughtful process will take place and if approved, he would facilitate these
discussions. Therefore, MNA staff recommends that D3 and MNA engage in partnership
discussions to determine if and how D3 and MNA might work together to serve the nonprofit
sector.
Jackie Taylor noted that MNA followed a very thoughtful process when considering a partnership
with another association a few years ago. In this case, the partnership didn‟t happen, but the process
was enlightening.

�A motion was made by Paula Cunningham and seconded by Rob Collier that MNA moves
forward with the D3 discussions and that Bill Liebold will work as the facilitator of these
discussions.
Dave Eisler commented that MNA has extraordinary Board members and remarkable staff.
David noted that the next MNA Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for December 13, 2011
from 10:00 a.m. – noon at the University Club of MSU with lunch following.

President’s Report Q2 FY 2011-12
This report covers the organization's progress for the second quarter. We are pleased of the
many accomplishments focused on our new strategic priorities. As always, I encourage you to
take extra time reviewing the program reports in the consent agenda. Staff has worked extremely
hard during our transition to the Armory and have not missed a step as we support our
constituents.
Michigan Nonprofit Association serves nonprofits to advance their missions.
Progress on Strategic Priorities
MNA will be a model collaborative work place where people are valued.
Our staff has successfully transitioned to our new home at the Marshall Street Armory during the
first week of November. The Michigan Association of United Ways, Capital Area United Way
and the Capital Region Community Foundation are now also occupying the Armory. We
anticipate that the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Michigan Central Region will move in during
early December and will complete the Nonprofit Center tenants.
Board members should have received an invitation to a special event on December 6th at the
Armory where we will share more good news about our partnership. We hope everyone will be
able to attend. We are expecting media from across the state to join us. Please contact Kathy
Cooney for event information.
MNA will serve Michigan’s nonprofit sector by providing resources, convening organizations
and building strategic relationships.
�The Data Driven Detroit/Michigan Nonprofit Association partnership exploratory committee had
been working closely with staff, funders and stakeholder to determine if there are alignment
opportunities for the two organizations.
The Committee members have met once, charged staff with identifying the priorities for each
organization in a possible partnership, and make a preliminary recommendation that could be
considered by the board of MNA. All parties remain open to discussions and possibilities. The
next meeting will take place the afternoon after the Executive Committee, therefore a complete
written summary and recommendation will be provided to the Executive Committee members
electronically for their review and approval.
Budget
Overall the organization is spending within budgeted targets. Revenues are slightly behind, but
within reason. Because of the significant changes in revenues and expenses from the previously
accepted budget, staff is recommending that the Finance Committee adopted a modified budget.
That detail will be provided in the Finance Committee Report.
The Nonprofit Center at the Armory Campaign has charged forward and provided some relief to
the overall transition costs. More detail on the Campaign will be provided in the Fund
Advancement Report.
Challenges
The volatile state and federal policy landscapes make planning and programming difficult. Our
public policy activities have increased dramatically with the state reforms coupled with the
budget battles raging in Washington, D.C. Our national service programs remain strong, but at
the same time remain the target of policy makers in Congress seeking to cut federal spending.
The recent state and federal threats to charitable incentives are creating a worrisome trend toward
a "nonprofits need to pay their fair share" mentality that is based in neither fact nor reality. In
addition, the misinterpretation of philanthropy being synonymous with the tax code places
charitable giving incentives in the middle of a raging debate between tax and budget cuts.
It will be important for MNA to help nonprofits articulate the value of charitable incentives
while simultaneously demonstrating how the nonprofit sector is providing needed services to
communities and generating jobs and economic value.

The Michigan Nonprofit Association Board of Directors will meet on Tuesday,
December 13, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. to noon at the University Club, 3435 Forest Road,
Lansing, in the ballroom on the lower level. This will be the final meeting at the
University Club. Beverages will be available at 9:30 a.m. Lunch will be served following
the Board meeting.
Enclosed are meeting materials and directions to the University Club. If you see a
consent agenda item that you would like discussed in further detail, please notify Kyle
at 517-492-2442 prior to the meeting. Also included in the front of the packet are the
MNA Board of Directors list and the 2011-2012 MNA Board schedule.

New Programs and Funding:
King/Chavez/Parks Initiative GEAR UP Grant Award
In partnership with the State of Michigan’s King/Chavez/Parks Initiative, Michigan Campus Compact has
been awarded $104,240 to collaborate with Michigan’s Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for
Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) to expand and enhance college access and success initiatives in
Michigan. Michigan Campus Compact will offer an estimated five competitive $15,000 grants in Year 1
for GEAR UP programs hosted at MCC member institutions. Awarded GEAR UP programs will partner
with campus Volunteer Centers and Service-Learning offices in an effort to establish a cohort of college
student leaders serving with middle and high school youth as College Positive Volunteers (CPVs). CPVs
are college students who are provided with training, tools and knowledge to become educated
resources and ambassadors of higher education to the K-12 youth they serve. Additional campuses will
be added each year of the GEAR UP grant with the potential of six years of funding and 15 campuses
involved in the program.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Collegiate Challenge Grants
Michigan Campus Compact has been awarded $30,000 as the lead agency for the MLK Day of Service
Collegiate Challenge grant for the North Central and Atlantic regions of the United States, through
funding from the Corporation for National and Community Service and in partnership with Wisconsin
Campus Compact. The 2012 MLK Collegiate Challenge grants will mobilize college students across the
country to collaboratively engage with community partners, addressing specific community issues of
education, healthy futures and disaster preparedness. Approximately 20 campuses will be awarded
$1,000 each, resulting in over 100 MLK Day of Service projects in partnership with 120 community
organizations, mobilizing over 4,800 volunteers.
Campus Compact/Lumina Foundation
Michigan Campus Compact (MICC) has been awarded $17,750 from National Campus Compact through
a grant from the Lumina Foundation as part of their KnowHow2GO National Youth Serving Organization
funding. With this award, MICC will engage Campus Compact colleagues through hosting a network,
stakeholder and member summit to discuss how to deepen the work of College Positive Volunteerism
(CPV). As a follow-up to the summit, MICC will produce a convening paper on the potential for campuses

�and states to use CPV to drive continued engagement in college access and success efforts along with
civic engagement initiatives.
Network Gatherings:
MICC is planning the 15th Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Institute for January 30-31, 2012.
Keynote speakers include Dr. James Duderstadt, former University of Michigan president, Barbara
Jacoby, National Civic Engagement Leader/Expert/Author, Dr. Randy Stoecker or the University of
Wisconsin-Madison, and Holger Wagner, a former Northern Michigan University student. Registration
for the conference has been launched, and MICC is reviewing session presenter proposals. MICC has
engaged a skilled volunteer, Amanda Crowell Itliong, to assist in the planning and implementation of this
conference.
MICC held a Network Meeting on November 4, 2011 at the University of Michigan-Flint. The meeting
focused on the Engaged Campus Themes & Indicators, as laid out in the criteria for the MICC Engaged
Campus Award.
Best in Class: Service Leadership Camp was held at the Sherman Lakes YMCA on September 23-25, 2011.
This year’s Camp was supported by a grant from the Jenzabar Foundation in partnership with National
Campus Compact, and included 100 students and staff from Michigan colleges and high schools. As part
of the Jenzabar grant, MICC is awarding 7 mini-grants to Camp attendees up to $250 each.
National Service:
Member trainings and enrollment have begun for the 2011-2012 Michigan Service Scholars AmeriCorps
program. To date, 159 of the 300 member slots have been filled. Additional trainings will take place in
January 2012 to fill the remaining slots. MSS members have one year to complete 300 hours of service
for a $1,175 education award.
The Michigan Campus Compact*VISTA program recruited three new VISTA members, who will be
serving at U of M Dearborn. The VISTA members began their year of service in November by attending a
week-long training with the Corporation for National and Community Service. The MCC*VISTA program
currently has 19 members serving throughout the state. *See attached impact page to see measured
outcomes of the 2010-2011 MCC*VISTA program.

What is the Impact?
In 2010-2011, seventeen Michigan Campus Compact’s AmeriCorps*VISTAs generated
impressive human and financial resources in their efforts to build, support, and develop the
capacity of college students to address the local needs of those in low-income communities and
to gain a richer experience outside the classroom. MCC VISTAs have:
Developed service programs, recruited student volunteers, and trained them to address
the needs of those in poverty
Assisted in 73 campus-wide days of service such as Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Make a
Difference Day and Global Youth Service Day.
Generated on campus involvement of 4,444 college students performing community
service or service learning, and a total of 5,393 active community volunteers.
These volunteers performed 39,488 hours of service. At $21.36/hour (a figure developed
by Independent Sector for 2011), this service equates to over $843,463.63.
Assisted in 73 trainings, orientations, and reflection activities for service-learning courses
and/or community service.
Become localized experts in 17 areas including: college access, student organizational
development, leading reflections using social media, service learning and issues around
poverty and domestic violence.
Assisted 46 faculty members in service-learning course development or expansion.
Engaged 404 community partners, including local United Ways, Habitat for Humanity,
churches/faith-based organizations, cities, housing commissions, K-12 schools,
mentoring programs, after-school academic assistance programs, and other youthserving organizations.
Coordinated 97 events to build awareness of the needs of those in poverty in Michigan
communities.
Generated in-kind donated goods and services valued at $3,884 These included food,
clothing, service trip housing, books, brochures, speakers’ fees, and meeting space.
Leveraged $95,132 through fundraising events for local non-profit organizations, grant
writing, and donations from campus departments and student groups.

Board of Directors -Programs Report
December 13, 2011
METRO DETROIT PARTNERSHIP OFFICE
SEPTEMBER
Donna Murray-Brown was invited to participate in a private small group discussion with Michael Robbins,
Senior Advisor for Nonprofits, United States Department of Education to discuss the volunteerism and
civic engagement environment in the City of Detroit. Other organizations represented at the meeting
represented the Michigan Community Service Commission, City Year, the state office for Corporation for
National and Community Service, and Detroit Public Schools. Mr. Robbins’ visit to Detroit was part of the
Connecting Communities for the Common Good, Conversations and Partnership Opportunities with the

Obama Administration’s Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnership Office event held September 27 at
Wayne County Community College District.
OCTOBER
Amanda Hustzi, joined the Metro Detroit Partnership Office team as its new Project Coordinator. Amanda
joins MNA from the Office of State Representative Jim Townsend, where she was the District Director and
Scheduler. In her new position as Project Coordinator, Amanda will be assisting with various aspects of
the statewide Capacity Building work and Metro Detroit projects . This is a shared full-time position with
Council of Michigan Foundations where she will be assisting Kimberly Burton, Vice President, Corporate
Services and Director of Diversity and Inclusion.
Donna Murray-Brown presented at the following events:

Minnesota Council of Nonprofits 25 Annual Conference in St. Paul , Minnesota as part of the
panel for the Nonprofit Niche on Voter Engagement: You Make a Difference session. MNA was
invited to participate to share its learning from the recent 2010 Nonprofit Voter Engagement
study conducted by Nonprofit Vote. The study provided data to support the impact nonprofit
organizations have on the voting engagement behavior of its clients. As you may recall, seven
Metro Detroit organizations participated in the unprecedented study. One important highlight
noted in the study is that a nonprofit organization’s encouragement for their clients to
participating in the act of voting not only motivates the client to become civically engaged but
has a cascading effect that has the client encourage others to engage such as their family
members and friends.
Metro Solutions Annual Meeting. As part of this year’s annual meeting, Donna Murray-Brown
was the keynote speaker. This was an exciting event with more than 200 participants in
attendance. Meeting participants included community health service providers, Wayne County

Health staff, hospital administrators and medical professions. During the annual meeting, MNA
announced its partnership with Metro Solutions to begin its work with building the capacity of
community health clinics serving Southeastern Michigan with strategic alliance development and
nonprofit management training. The program is expected to launch first or second quarter 2012.
Mission of Peace Annual Conference. Donna was invited by the Mission of Peace, a national
homeownership counseling network based in Flint and Detroit, to speak to its network of 50+
nonprofit homeownership counseling agencies about the importance and benefits of
membership in a nonprofit association.
Independent Sector Annual Conference, Chicago, Illinois. Donna was invited to participate on a
panel coordinated by National Urban Fellows (NUF), a national leadership program promoting
the cultivation of multi-cultural public service leadership. As part of NUF’s goal of creating a
pipeline of diverse leadership in the public sector, NUF has developed regional networks in eight
cities across the country. MNA in partnership with Detroit Public Television and Council of
Michigan Foundations, are working on a communication strategy to key leaders in Metro Detroit
to promote diversity as best practice . A database of 675 regional leaders has been assembled;
Messaging content is being developed; and a leadership council has been coordinated to guide
the communication plan. NUF has submitted a grant application to the W.K. Kellogg Foundation
to support the work of the network. The Detroit program is expected to launch in first quarter
2012.
NOVEMBER
MNA Metro Detroit Partnership Office hosted Public Allies (PA), a national service program, in a
convening session for PA to learn more about the City of Detroit as part of their program expansion. PA
plans to submit an application directly to the Corporation for National and Community Service to support
a program in Detroit where 30 Public Allies could be deployed across neighborhoods and communities to
tackle some of Detroit’s most challenging issues. More to follow.
CAPACITY BUILDING
SEPTEMBER
Annie McGuigan Fenton and Donna Murray-Brown met with 40+ organizations representing the Highland
Park Human Services Collaborative (HP Collaborative). The purpose of the meeting was to present the
wide array of services offered in Metro Detroit by MNA’s Metro Detroit Office. Many of the meeting
participants were unaware of the services provided by MNA. More follow-up is needed to link the
meeting participants to Bill Gesaman for membership services. Leon Wilson, director of Highway T is also
connected with the HP Collaborative for prospective delivery of technology services.
OCTOBER
MNA staff taught three classes (Planning, Evaluation, Strategic Alliances, Public Policy) as part of Saginaw
Valley State University’s Nonprofit Excellence Management Fall Series. 25 nonprofit leaders mainly
serving Saginaw, Midland and Bay area communities. All session presentations were based on MNA’s

Principles and Practices/ Nonprofit Management Manual 5 Edition. All sessions received the highest
overall evaluation ranking for content and delivery.
NOVEMBER
Annie McGuigan Fenton, Capacity Building Manger has used her first three months of joining MNA to do a
deep analysis of the MNA Capacity Building tools and resources. She is also meeting with key leaders in
�the seven management support organization network spanning across the state of Michigan. Her final
meetings with MSO leaders will conclude the end of November. She will provide a final report,
recommendations and an action plan for the Capacity Building moving forward. More to follow.
Highway T & MI Armory Move
The Highway T team has successfully assisted in the move of all agencies now located in the Armory with “Zero” –
additional downtime. All clients were up and running as soon as they were able to unpack and set up their
machines and laptops. The Highway T Armory Command Center kept track of all reported issues which primarily
consisted on re-establishing printers and shared drive folders. Outside of the actual moving of equipment, all
agency staff members experienced no disruption of service for internet access, email access, or access to key
applications. This affected over 50 workstations and 5 servers in total, with one more organization to go.
Highway T & New Partnerships
The Highway T team has developed new strategic partnerships with technology vendors Google and Idealware.
The Highway T team partnered with Google in Detroit (Oct. 18 – 19) and Kalamazoo (Oct. 21) for Google’s
“Michigan Get Your Business Online” campaign. Google offered free website setup and hosting for a year to small
businesses and nonprofits, along with workshops on Google Adwords and Running your business online.
Giftworks and Highway T/MNA have entered into a partnership providing MNA members with a 20% discount on
all Giftworks products and training classes. In addition Giftworks will be working with Highway T to develop a
custom “Donor Management” webinar for Michigan nonprofits that Highway T will be able to promote and offer.
Highway T has also developed a partnership with Idealware to rebroadcast some of Idealware’s tech webinars in a
shared revenue model.
Highway T & HandsOn Network
Highway T and HandsOn Network are in discussion to potentially transfer HandsOn Network’s HandsOn Tech –
Detroit program to MNA. HandsOn Tech is a newly funded program sponsored by Google placing three
AmeriCorps* VISTAS in 9 – 10 pilot cities each with the goal of helping nonprofits supporting low income areas
with technology adoption. HandsOn Tech – Detroit was originally housed at United Way of Southeast Michigan,
but due to resource constraints needed to find a new home. After a review of 3 potential new partners, Highway T
was selected by HandsOn Tech leadership as the preferred partner.
Managed Care
The Highway T team is currently providing managed care technical support to ten (10) organizations encompassing
10 servers and 175 desktops. Two new clients “Food Bank Council of Michigan” and “Big Brothers Big SistersLansing” will be signing on as managed care clients within the next month as a part of the Armory move.
Professional Services
Highway T attended the 2011 UP Nonprofit Conference providing “Curbside Assistance” to attendees and raffling
off 4 free tech webinars.
Highway T has also launched an “askHighway T” program; virtual tech Q&A service. Nonprofits will be able to dial
into a monthly free 2-hour webinar to ask questions and seek advice on technology matters. Highway T
consultants will be facilitating the webinar and answering questions.

Highway T also presented a talk on “Free and Low-cost Tech Tools” at Jackson’s Nonprofit Network one-day
Conference early November.

An “Afternoon with Highway T” is scheduled Dec. 14 at the Johnson Center @ GVSU. Highway T will be providing
a technical talk titled “Top Ten Tech Issues” and networking opportunity with NPO’s serviced by the Johnson
Center.

New webinar
The membership team conducted a new webinar called “Utilizing Your MNA Benefits” for current and
potential members. The primary objective was to engage current members in all MNA has to offer and
increase our retention of new members. Because of the popularity of this webinar, we will be conducting
these every other month and encouraging our new members to attend.
New member benefits
GrantStation partnership – All MNA members receive a free weekly e-mail that contains upcoming grant
opportunities and deadlines. There are approximately 900 subscribers so far.
Michigan Foundation Directory – MNA has partnered with the Council of Michigan Foundations to offer
MNA members a discount on the Michigan Foundation Directory.
Events
MNA continues to conduct Nonprofit Leader Roundtables every other month in a different region in
Michigan. So far we have traveled to: Detroit, Kalamazoo and Midland. Each event has seen increased
attendance and positive evaluations. These events are an effort to increase collaboration by bringing
leaders together and identifying common challenges and opportunities amongst different sub-sectors.

MNA has partnered with ArtServe to offer a joint membership program. Joint members will not only
