For this reason, Grand Valley State University has created an "Out List;' a collection · of faculty and staff who openly identify as part of the LGBT community. Officials in the Milton E. Ford LGBT Resource Center said the list can be used as a source of empowerment for GVSU students who identify within the community looking forward into professional life. "It's important for LGBTQIA college students to see themselves in the professional world;' said Marla Wick, assistant director in the center. "The Out List is comprised of people who are actively modeling what it means to be out about their identities in the workplace:' The list may operate as a means of forming a sense of comradery and personal safety for LGBT students entering the post-collegiate working world. "The LGBTQIA faculty and staff listed in the Out List model for students the possibility and reality of being an openly out professional;' said Jen Hsu-Bishop, director of the LGBT Center. . Both Wick and Hsu-Bishop related its importance to a lack of state-mandated protections for people in the workplace who identify within the community. "LGBTQIA college students have to think about how and whether to be out in the workplace, depending on a number of factors and beginning with considerations of personal safety,' Wick said. "The Out List provides these students, as well as other faculty and staff, with a visible community of people, many of whom will have navigated similar experiences:' A collaboration between the GVSU Division of Inclusion and Equity and the LGBT Faculty and Staff Association, the Out Li1>t may strengthen the message of inclusion on GVSU's campus. "The list reflects and aligns with GVSU's commitment to identifying and eliminating barriers to recruit and retain diverse students, faculty and staff," Hsu-Bishop said. For me, quarantine started when GVSU cancelled classes on March 11, 2020. Before then, I vaguely heard COVID-19 being mentioned in the news starting in January 2020. At the time, it seemed like a minor inconvenience - an inconvenience that only affected people in China. Then, I went on a Spring Break Mission Trip with Campus Ministry to Bithlo, Florida from February 29th to March 7th. In the middle of the week, our supervisor came to us saying that, due to the coronavirus, the Campus Ministry staff had a phone call regarding whether they would allow us to fly back home like we had planned. We were all confused, and, truthfully, thought he was overreacting. We had not heard of anyone in the U.S. having COVID19. They ended up letting us fly back; classes started up again Monday, and by Wednesday, they were cancelled for the next two weeks. Then, before the two weeks were up, it was cancelled for the rest of the semester. It was overwhelming to return from an awesome trip to feel ambushed by a global pandemic. It seemed to happen so fast. My generation has never experienced something like this, so it is really difficult to know how to help each other through it. Fortunately, I have Jesus in my life and can rely on Him and my wonderful friends and family during this time, but not everyone has that. I am very involved in Campus Ministry at GVSU, and am on the Hospitality leadership team. Our job is to reach out to students, invite them to CM, and make new students feel welcome when they come. Obviously, this was all put on hold when the campus closed. The hardest part for me, though as a student at GVSU is thinking about what my friends who are seniors are going through. They had no idea that they would be going to their last CM event before going on Spring Break. We didn’t get a chance to honor them at the last CM event of the year. They didn’t even get to properly say goodbye to the amazing staff and students at CM that have been a part of their journey throughout the past four years. To highlight the national holiday, Susan Stryker was brought in by the Milton E. Ford LGBT Resource Center to give a keynote lecture on transgen der issues and history. Stryker, whose lecture began at 4 p.m., was introduced by assistant professor Cael Keegan of the liberal studies and women, gender and sexuality studies departments. Having known Stryker before her visit to GVSU, Keegan was a natural can didate to give her introduction. Keegan said he was greatly influenced by Stryker's work and was grateful for her role as a mentor in his life. "It's not often that you're given the opportunity to introduce someone with out whose work your own would not exist;' Keegan said. "Susan's work and mentorship has not only been invaluable to me but has been the very precondition for my intellectual life:' Highlighting the meaning and reason behind Transgender Day of Remembrance, Keegan spoke in his introduction about the role memory plays in remembering transgender lives that were lost too early. The biggest misconception that surfaced linked HIV closely with the LGBT community and it has remained there for some time. Medical industries have proved that the disease is treatable, preventable and doesn't discriminate ba ed n sexual orientation. Although, it does tend to effect a y unger demographic. "I think this is an important conversation t have because younger people are one of the only populations in the last 10 years in which number of incidents of HIV have continued to stay the same or increase:' Hsu-Bishop said. Because of this frightening trend, Watt, along with the departments that make up GVSU Intersections have long been working to not only combat stigma, but misinformation as well. The two usually come together, though on GVSU's campus, students have taken a broader approach to HIV and AIDS. Watt takes the additional role of reducing stigma around the disease, working closely with educational organizations to make that goal a reality. "It' omething I think a lot of people still don't know a lot of information on:' said Jen Hsu-Bishop, director of the Milton E. Ford LGBT Resource Center. "So we wanted to bring Dave Watt in to provide education on what we do know about HIV today, what the medical treatment is for HIY, as well as how we can fight stigma:' Though medical truths about HIV and AIDS have ominous disease. Many have exhibited a general approach: to stay healthy and protect partners without embarrassment. HIV and STis in general are realities that everyone and anyone could face. "Our role is to educate people on campus about things they just don't know about or things that they've been taught as fact:' aid Kristie Scanlon, assistant director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs. "We just want to broaden a knowledge ba e without saying 'this is what you should believe~' Because students have been educated about HIV and AID differently, there's no universal approach to further educating them now. Scanlon hopes that through hearing Watt speak about his experiences working with those affected by AIDS and through social media awareness, efforts to end the stigma and successfully fight the epidemic can be more successful. "Unfortunately, it sometimes happens that people don't talk about it unless it's personally impacting them:' she said. "It would be great if we didn't have to do this work anymore.
