Every morning CB cleans our phones, computers and iPads with Clorox wipes and even though my fingertips smell of bleach I feel better about using them. Yesterday we did a little shopping in the grocery store wearing disposable gloves. Not one person looked twice at us. In the store we visited the staff were hard at work replenishing shelves with as much stock as they have available, Many items were completely sold out with little hope of more stock any time soon. Yesterday Broadway New York closed, Disneyland, Disneyworld and Disney Cruises have all closed down. Last night Governor Whitmer closed all Michigan schools effective this Monday. This morning I received notice that Monterrey Aquarium has closed. The United States has a crucial shortage of test kits. There is so much misinformation out there, starting from the top down that a section of the community are refusing to take this threat seriously. Its hard for me to look at the desperate situation in Italy where they have effectively closed the whole country to try and combat the overwhelming numbers of sick people, and then consider the federal response here. I think it comes down to each organization making its own best choice for its members or employees. The streets near our house are very quiet as more people are staying home. This is a whole new way of living for the foreseeable future and I have every confidence we can do it. What? Why would she use a word like that? Is she trying to scare me? Well maybe yes and maybe no. What I am trying to do is raise awareness. As a friend of mine said: its time to think about our lives in a completely different way - and in a way thats what its all about, our lives. Everyone doing their best to not put themselves, their families and their friends in harms way. Well what does that entail? It’s hard for me to say what that might mean for you, so I’ll just describe what it means for CB and me. Yesterday Grand Valley State University closed and CB considers this means he is home for the summer. So in line with this it means making sure we have adequate supplies of non perishable foods, necessary medications and household supplies. No, not panic buying, just enough for 2-3 weeks. And by the way, I buy my toilet paper, tissues and paper towels online and they only sell it in bulk so I probably already had enough to last some months. It means not attending any meetings, concerts, events etc until at least the end of March. We are able to take walks outside in the fresh air and if you see us we are happy to converse from 3-6 feet apart. All other activities in the community we will consider as the days go by. I personally was resistant to return home just because I love the independence I have at GV, but now that I’m actually home, I am glad to be back with my family during this time. My one friend who lived on campus had to leave as soon as possible which was incredibly sad, but I spent the night with him to enjoy his last day. The next day we cleared out his whole apartment and sadly said our goodbyes. I have my apartment for the whole summer, so I only brought home my essentials such as clothes, hygiene products, etc. - Surprisingly, online classes have been going really well for me. A few weekends before this all happened and we were still going to classes, I had my first panic attack. Following that day, every time I would go to my classes I would have to leave the classroom in order to get a breath of fresh air and to calm down. Every time I went to a class, I would get this instant feeling that I was going to have another panic attack. Once classes turned to online, my anxiety has calmed down and I have been able to focus on myself. Being able to work in the comfort of my own room has been so much less stressful and I have not had a panic attack since. I think this is because I don't have to be in public anymore and worried about having anxiety with lots of people around me. I have been able to keep up my grades and everything is going well. - My student organization, NSSLHA, requires a certain amount of volunteer and event hours in order to stay in the group, and as the end of the year was approaching, I was overwhelmed because I had about 3 more events to go. Since COVID -19 occurred, NSSLHA had to smartly state that we no longer needed these hours and that as long as we paid our dues, we would still be in the group. Although I wish I could have gotten the extra volunteering experience, I was grateful to not have as much stress to get these hours in especially since exams were right around the corner. - Although normally my household is annoying and I just want to go back to school ASAP, life at home has been very relaxing and comforting. This is a time where we need to support each other through all of this and we have been getting through by experimenting with new cooking recipes, watching movies, and just talking about life. My mom is so happy that I am back home, and I am glad to be able to bring her this joy. On top of the large loads of online homework and exams, I found myself working 50 or more hours on my family’s farm in Capac, MI due to the inability to receive migrational wrokers from Mexico. This only increased my stress during the pandemic and forced school to become a second or even third thought when it should come first. My daily life at home consists of waking up at 5:00 am to have a cup of coffee or four and start my trek to the farm that is 40 minutes away. Life on the farm is a nonstop race against time and a battle against mother nature that is found in a symbiotic relation. From picking and packing rhubarb that we ship all throughout the mid-west, to spreading hundreds of acres with fertilizer for pumpkins, gourds and many other fall products, to working ground for organic kale and collards. However, this did not yet include the cancellation of NCAA division II sports. As a member of the GVSU volleyball team, we continued practicing for two more days, until it was decided that all sport activities be cancelled on March 13 through May 31st. I remember coming to practice on that Thursday and the campus had already turned into a ghost town; it seemed as if we were the only ones on campus. However, off-campus seemed to be thriving and taking advantage of not having classes for the rest of the week. I don’t think the severity of the situation was understood yet, as people were partying in large groups. I remember joking about how Grand Valley and other universities made the decision to close campus to limit large groups of people, while students celebrated by doing just that, partying in large groups of people. Following the announcement that our spring season was over, we had a team meeting, which included our coaching staff and athletic trainer. They gave us tips on how to stay safe and protect ourselves from the coronavirus, as well as discussed how this would impact our program. Most of our fundraising takes place in the spring and summer, and this is a huge portion of our financial support for the following season. In addition, these fundraisers go towards our out-of-the-country trip that was scheduled for next summer. Thus, having to cancel these events, brings uncertainty about the trip. The meeting gave us many resources for support and our staff made sure that we would have a place to stay and food to eat during the time away from campus. Our team decided to hang out one last time together Friday night before we parted ways, for who knows how long. I stayed one more night in Allendale on Saturday, and on Sunday returned to my parents’ home in Holland, Michigan. Looking back, not knowing when I’d be able to go back to Allendale, I really wish I would have packed more of my things to take back home. I still have most of my clothes there and don’t know when I’ll be able to go back to get them. Luckily, I have a great relationship with my parents, so coming home wasn’t that hard. I’m finishing up my classes with finals this week and didn’t have many problems as far as switching to online. Most of my professors have been understanding and supportive throughout the switch. The only problem I ran into was with my BMS professor. She started giving us less time on assessments once we switched to online to try and prevent cheating. Our exams were 60 questions long and she limited our time to 60 minutes; one minute per question… As a student who struggles with ADHD, completing assessments within a time-limit is a difficult task no matter how much time is given, and even harder when you limit that time. I’m also a student who likes to double, triple check my answers and I found it impossible to do that within the time limit. I have heard of other students with similar problems. Some of my teammates said that their professors have put a higher demand on them, assigning more assignments, assuming that students are in quarantine and have nothing but time to do schoolwork. What these professors struggle to understand is that, while most of us do have the time, everybody �is experiencing more stress due to the pandemic, without added demand from professors. My daily life has changed drastically since this started. Not having practice, which normally takes up 3-4 hours of my day, is a huge adjustment. I always wished for more free time and now that I have it, I don’t know what to do with it! I’m extremely excited about finishing classes this year but part of me wishes I was taking summer classes to keep me busy. My days consist of sleeping in, taking walks on the beach with my parents and dog, homework, and Netflix. My parents and I are still getting a long pretty well and I don’t mind spending this time with them. I miss my friends but due to my naturally introvert personality it isn’t affecting me too much, as I like having time to myself. On the other hand, I haven’t seen my boyfriend since the lockdown, and I miss him a lot. His mom works at a hospital, so they don’t want him to expose me to anything he might get from being around her. We FaceTime, but it just isn’t the same. Me and my family have been strict under quarantine and I haven’t really seen the outside world since I left Allendale. We don’t even go to the grocery store anymore; we have been using Shipt and other delivery services. The only shortages we noticed was at the beginning of quarantine when we struggled to find bread and toilet paper. It’s been really weird adjusting to life during quarantine and makes me wonder what the new “normal” will be afterwards. I did move off of campus very suddenly due to COVID-19. When I left, I brought my school stuff, about a week's worth of clothes, and my toiletries. I left my apartment on March 14th and just recently went back with my parents on Saturday April 18th to get most of the stuff out of my apartment. I still have things there that could not fit into my car after the first trip back. My online classes are going okay, it's a bit more challenging doing every class online, especially classes that are challenging for me in the first place. My professors have all been extremely lenient and kind while we all navigate online learning however, and I appreciate that. Some of my friends that are students are having harder times as well due to stress of trying to finish out the semester with COVID-19 looming over our heads. I’m stressed as well. I have been helping out a lot around my parent’s house. Both of them are still working full time. My mom works from home and my dad still has to go in. I can tell they are both stressed about not only our immediate family, but our extended family as well. I’m trying my best to make sure they don’t really have to worry about anything when they are done with work for the day. As for my extended family, we deliver groceries to every family member that may be more at risk than us, like my grandma. My friends are mostly just stressed with classes and bored. I did have a job on campus in parking services. We stopped working as soon as the university moved to online classes. If there is nobody on campus, who do we have to enforce? Thankfully, nobody that I know has had COVID-19 yet. However, my aunt does work on the COVID-19 floor of St. Joseph Hospital in Howell as a nurse. She has been having trouble finding n-95 masks and is only provided one a week by the hospital. My family and friends have been sewing mask covers to go over the n-95 masks to make them last longer. Usually we don’t have a problem finding anything at the store (unless it’s toilet paper, hand sanitizer, or wipes) when we go in the morning. We are usually able to find toilet paper at costco when my mom runs there early in the morning. It's been tough coping with COVID-19 and the weird twists that it has brought to my life. It has brought to light some things that I take for granted on a daily basis, like hugging family, or celebrating birthdays. I would have never assumed business would close down, school would be remote, online learning, dorms would be emptied, mandatory stay at home orders would be placed and wearing masks would become normal. As a college student, there was a stigma that us young people wouldn't get sick. However, we quickly learned that’s not the case. I first started receiving emails from GVSU professors when we got back from spring break. These emails stated that those who had travelled to high risk areas decided to self-quarantine. It was then that I realized how big of a deal this was going to be. Shortly after students returned from spring break GVSU shut down campus. I live off campus so i wasn't forced to move back home. However, I frequently go home to visit my parents. I'm unable to see my friends and was required to take time off of work. Today, i saw my friends for the first time in two months. We had practiced social distancing, she just stopped by my house to pick something up and then left. That’s the most human contact outside of my family that I've had in a while. I also returned to work this week 4/20/20 after taking a month off. It surprises me how few people wear masks out in public or take other precautions. I wear a mask and work behind plexiglass at the cash register. However, my work does not require employees to wear a mask although I think they should. In addition to work, my classes have been difficult online. I have a few professors who are more than willing to help, accept late work, accommodate you in anyway possible, send out multiple announcements daily on blackboard but, i also have professors who have only reached out the day before an exam, don't put it any effort to host virtual class or take days to a week to respond to questions. I’ve managed to maintain great grades this semester given the circumstances. I am a part of NSSLHA and NSLS on campus, these clubs require me to do volunteer hours and attend meetings. However, I am unable to do so given the executive orders. At the end of the semester we are required to turn in volunteer logs but they had to cancel that this year because we weren't able to fit in all of our events before COVID-19 took over. Additionally, going to the grocery store now is a whole ordeal. I have to wear my masks, I wear gloves, I keep 6 feet between me and whoever else is in the store, I avoid using carts and limit my contact/communication. Additionally, I go to the store with a list, I get in and get out, I no longer spend time browsing. Cleaning supplies have been out of stock for weeks, two weeks ago I stumbled upon the last two cartons of lysol wipes and I had to buy one because I'm not sure when I'll be able to find them again. There has been a shortage for certain grocery items as well such as bread, coffee, milk and cereal. COVID-19 has taken over the way we live and I'm sure our lives will continue like this for a while. The governor is talking about opening Michigan back up on May 1st but even if that happens we will still have to practice social distancing and people will still wear masks. I never thought that within my lifetime, I would be living through a pandemic. After getting the news that the university was shut down, I started packing up my apartment to come home to the safety of my family. This was an easy move to make as my parents met me at my apartment to help me move out. My experience during this pandemic has been such an eye opening, yet unique experience. I am a certified nurse assistant (CNA) at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak MI. As essential personnel, I was pulled to help work on the COVID-19 units. Being honest, I was terrified to go into work. I was so worried that by going into work, I would have a high possibility of bringing it home to my family. One of my co-workers, had got diagnosed with COVID-19 from being exposed to patients with the virus. I forced the fears back, just remembering to take extra precautions. Focusing on the patients that I will be helping during this time. I remember walking into my first day back at work during this pandemic. Various thoughts ran through my head, and the biggest reoccurring thought was “what can I do to help make a little difference in my patients lives?” As a CNA, my job consists of helping the nurses working on the unit by taking vitals, helping with wound care, turning patients, and other various jobs to keep the patients safe and healthy. When I began working on one of the COVID-19 units, I was dressed head to toe in personal protective equipment (PPE). N95 masks, sterile scrubs, earloop masks, and as well as face shields were given at the beginning of the shift before entering the unit. Thankfully, Beaumont has not had much trouble getting PPE. They are providing one N95 mask per worker and washing them after each shift to prevent the shortage of masks. �I had six patients that were diagnosed with COVID-19. This meant that I had six different chances to help my patients get through this tough time in their lives. It was heartbreaking seeing them diagnosed with such a new and challenging disease. Most patients were hooked up to ventilators and hadn’t seen their families in a little over a month. I remember making my patient smile as we turned his bed to face the window. This was in celebration of him being put off the ventilator. It made me feel so honored to work in such an amazing field and to be a health hero. That during their toughest moments, we were able to bring smiles to their faces, and do all we could to get healthy and home to their families. I have worked on several COVID-19 units since then, and each time I get to experience more life changing experiences trying to help mend the patients back to health. As frightening as it is, I look forward to going into work because of the difference that I get to make. I couldn’t be prouder to be a frontline worker and working with so many strong and brave health heroes. I have been feeling well since my last shift at the hospital. In order to keep my immune system up, I have been taking vitamin, working out and eating healthy. The vitamins that I take that have helped are vitamins A, D, and lots of vitamin C. Iodine droplets have also helped. One important takeaway point that has stuck with me from working at the hospital has been to have a strong faith and have a positive perspective. Kind of unbelievable we started this online classes on March 16th. Two weeks before campus closed was spring break, and I was down in Ashville, NC with Grand Valley’s Alternative Breaks club working on helping nutrition and wellness with the YMCA. While we were there the first cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in New York. In that time no one was too concerned of the virus. We had heard of the explosion of COVID in China, Italy, and other countries, but kind of blocked the thought of it making its way to the U.S. I think in the back of our minds we all saw it coming though, I mean with the amount of travel that was happening in the U.S. for spring breakers, plus the amount of travel that goes to and from the U.S. on a daily bases makes it hard for the virus to not make its way here. I lived in an off-campus apartment until Michigan announced its two-week quarantine on March 24th. It was then that I went home to stay with my family during this time and have been home ever since. It was nice to have meals cooked by my parents and a larger place then my apartment to be trapped in. However, I left most of my stuff at my apartment and also still had to pay rent on it. The switch to online classes was hard. I had taken online classes before but going from on-campus to online felt like starting the semester all over again. For most classes I felt like I had to teach myself the content. Plus, I had very little motivation as being home felt like summer break. I’ve heard from my friends and they are all struggling with online classes as well. It seemed like our professors were assigning us more work then we would’ve gotten on-campus. Labs were probably the hardest, as we couldn’t see the experiment in action yet had to answer questions about the experiments from videos. Honestly it all just felt like busy work. The home life wasn’t too bad as I am lucky enough to have a good relationship with my family. There are times where everyone is tense or gets fed up with each other, but luckily my siblings and I still had school to keep us busy while our parents did some work from home. We all picked up a few new hobbies and watched a lot of movies. It was nice to be home as my parents would do the grocery shopping. They would always come home and tell me stories of people wearing masks at the store yet taking the mask off to smell fruit or wearing the mask just around their mouth, kind of defeating the purpose. There was also always a shortage of toilet paper, cleaning supplies, tissues, and at first, meat. My mom once went to three different stores just to find toilet paper. I worked at a physical therapy office as a tech before the shutdown. It closed once Michigan started putting restrictions in businesses. The last day I worked before quarantine was March 17th, I remember that day I kept answering the phones to patients cancelling their appointments. We also tripled cleaned everything in the office. My manager has been in touch through the entire lockdown with updates which has been nice. I used to work at a nursing home as a caretaker and remember a time where a bad strand of the flu was going on and we had to quarantine residents to their rooms. Everyone was wearing masks and cleaning anything they touched. That was a bit stressful but lasted a week, so I cannot even imagine what the healthcare workers are feeling like now. My roommate is a phlebotomist at Spectrum hospital �in Grand Rapids and she told me a little about their working conditions. She said that the COVID floor was very well quarantined as they tried to contain patients to just one floor. Although sometimes she would come into contact with a patient who had COVID but didn’t know. Once the patient was tested positive for COVID, she would receive an email that she was in contact with them but couldn’t get tested for the virus until she started showing symptoms in an order to save the number of tests they had. She also informed me that they were low on PPE. Everything right now seems very surreal but also kind of normal. As I wrote this, nothing I was writing seemed out of the ordinary or surprised me, but I could see how in a couple of years this all would seem like something out of a movie. I heard about what was going on oversees, but never anticipated this full lock down situation here in America. When I heard about it, I was living in my sorority house at college. Grand Valley had moved classes to online classes a week after our spring break, and that’s when everyone started leaving. Within a week, I was the only one left living in my sorority house that consisted of twenty-five girls. I needed to stay at my house because I work in an assisted living home close to my school, and my work really needed my help. We were short staffed to begin with, but as soon as the coronavirus started to spike, people started to call off of work. I was getting calls multiple times a week to see if I could come into work. I ended up picking up a lot of shifts because I was able to work more with classes being online. Work was pretty usual for the first week, but then things changed when we went on lockdown. The building I work in is a memory care unit with mostly hospice patients. The new rule was that there can no longer be visitors, unless completely necessary in regard to a hospice patient. The workers also had to be screened every time we came into work which included taking our temperatures and assessing the status of our health. The residents had to stop coming down to the dining room for meals and we had to ask them to stay in their rooms. This was really sad for me to watch because a lot of my residents didn’t know what was going on, and this virus completely disrupted their routines. I live in Illinois and go to school in Michigan so when I heard that they were potentially placing travel bans on Illinois, I started to become concerned. I was already planning on going home for the summer, so my boss knew that I wouldn’t be working until next August. I had a coworker pick up the remainder of my shifts for the semester and my parents moved me out of my sorority house as soon as possible. I was sad to leave because I didn’t anticipate my sophomore year of college ending this way. Online school was hard for me to adjust to. I enjoy taking one or two classes online during my semester, but fifteen credits online are a different story. It was very hard for me to focus on my �schoolwork when I didn’t have to physically attend lectures and I didn’t have a library to study at. Six people are living in my house currently: my mom, dad, younger sister, older sister and her husband, so you can imagine how hectic it is in my house. Most of the time I would procrastinate my schoolwork and have a ton of things to do last minute. I just took my last final and I am glad that the semester is over, but I still need to find ways to occupy my time. There is little to do since everything is closed, and social distancing rules are in place. I haven’t been in public in one and a half months now, and it is definitely affecting my mental health by not being able to see any of my friends and socialize. I don’t want to complain because so many people have it significantly worse than I do right now, but it is hard being isolated. The only time I get outside in these days are taking walks or runs, but it had been too cold in Illinois recently to do that often. In regard to the coronavirus, someone’s mom that I was very close to contracted it. It was very scary to hear about because the rate of fatality with this disease. Thankfully she is fine now, but someone having it who you are close to really puts things into perspective. I didn’t fully understand the gravity of it all until I heard about that. It made me realize what I should be focusing on in life, because it can be taken away from you very fast. I am grateful for this time I get to spend with my family. Even though I’m not used to living at home and I do get annoyed by it, I have grown closer to my family because of it. I honestly do not know how long the stay-at-home order will go until. The governor of Illinois just stated that our stay at home could potentially be extended until June, which is about another thirty days from now. I am frustrated with the amount of people not following the stay at home and making matters worse for everyone. There are protestors protesting these stay-athome orders, saying it is limiting their freedom. In my eyes I would rather have to say inside for three months, than have this pandemic last any longer. Now I see that the virus is more serious than it was conveyed to be; I did not picture the world being on lockdown months later. When we first got the notice that we were moving to remote learning classes for two weeks, I grabbed my necessities and left that weekend. A few days later, we got an email that classes were moving to remote learning for the rest of the semester. I had to drive back to Allendale, Michigan and move out the rest of my things. I’m from Chicago, Illinois so the drive wasn’t that bad, but I had to find people to help me and find vehicles that could fit all my things on short notice. With all classes being online, it was a struggle. I’ve had online classes before and I know it takes a lot of discipline and time management. I learn better when sitting in class because the professor can explain it in ways that the textbook may not. COVID-19 also affects student organizations and jobs. Model Entertainment is a student organization I am a part of on campus. We had a show scheduled for April 11th but it got cancelled. I was not working at school but when I came home and tried to work I couldn't because they were minimizing staff. We can all say that COVID-19 has put our social life, finances, and daily living styles to a halt. I have known friends that had COVID-19 and are now fine. I do not work in healthcare but I was thinking about volunteering to help out with COVID-19 patients. Lastly, getting groceries and household items have been quite a struggle. Some stores have lines down the block and once you finally get in there, they are out of paper towels, certain food items, and other basic necessities. We have to take serious precautions with what we touch in the stores and make sure we are properly wiping down items we bring in the house. My friends helped me pack up my car, and I did the same with those who left before me. My roommates and I spent one last late night together, still expecting to come back and see each other a few weeks later. Since that was in our expectations, we all have stuff left at our apartment, and so do my friends whom I did not live with. The day we heard we would not be coming back to school to finish the semester hit us all kind of hard. I have a very tight-knit friend group that I meant here at Grand Valley in my dorm building freshman year. We all have become so close especially now that been living separately, we see each other every night we spend in Allendale. We were all devastated we would not get to spend the rest of the year together and finish off how we should. We still keep in touch almost every day and update each other on everything going on in our lives. When we are allowed, we all plan on seeing each other once everything is over, whether it be in Allendale or one of our hometown’s. My online classes are going all right. I’ve taken an online class before, which I did not consider to be difficult. Having all online classes is a huge adjustment to go through. It takes a lot of self-discipline to get myself to stop being lazy (which tends to take most of the day) and start doing my work. All the messages that my teachers send through BlackBoard are very sincere and caring, and many of them have extended deadline when students voiced that they had too much to handle at some points. I think this has been hard on many students and even if we don’t notice, a lot of us are handling it the same way. Dragging ourselves up to do work, procrastinating, and probably not being able to put forth our best effort anymore is seen across the board with students. I’ve seen this in myself and talked about it with my friends also, and they agree. My daily life at home has been going all right. My parents have both been working from home. I tend to be someone who likes to be alone sometimes, and I feel like this can be hard for my parents to understand. This is why I enjoy having my own apartment at school with three other girls who are similar to me in that aspect. With my parents it can seem like they get offended by me being in my room for a majority of some days, whereas with my roommates we would checkup to make sure everything is okay and let each other be. Then by the end of the night we’d end up outside our rooms laughing together pretty much till the sun rose. It’s hard to go from living with friends who do not boss you around to living with your parents who seem to monitor your every move. I know it is probably an adjustment for them too with me being back, so I try to be as understanding as I can since this is something no one could have seen coming. Grocery shopping in the beginning was rough and looking at the empty shelves felt like something I’d seen in a movie. I feel like that came from the initial panic of everything, and since then it has improved. I can get what I need quickly and leave most of the time. One thing that I know is still difficult to get is toilet paper, which hasn’t been too much of a problem with me because for some reason my parents have always made sure to buy more than we need. �Another thing that is still difficult to get is hand sanitizer, but other cleaning products have been stocked every time I go to the store. For the most part I feel like I have access to anything I need to get, and if it’s not there I know it will be somewhere else. My friends and I have talked and overall, we just hope that we can continue next school year together, and not have to talk through screens anymore. More than anything I think all students agree. Yes, we want our summer to not be taken from us, but if it means we get to have a normal school year next year that would be worth it. I remember it being a Wednesday evening; my roommate and I were having dinner and watching the news when we first received word that our University was closing it’s doors and switching to an online format. We had the next two days off while teachers rapidly conformed their entire curriculum from in-class lectures to completely virtual. An uneasy and anxious feeling warped through my body. We had heard on the news of various Coronavirus cases around the world, but we were yet to have any confirmed in Michigan… until today. This whole thing just got entirely more real. My roommate immediately decided that she was going to head home; but I didn’t have that option. Although the University chose to close, I still had a job that was planning to remain open. I worked at a gym facility called MVP where I was apart of the daycare program. I went into work that Friday, March 13th for an eight hour shift. On my drive in, I was unsure what to think. I was worried about catching the virus, I didn’t know what to expect because Fridays are our busiest day of the week, and I didn’t know if it’d be different because all schools in the state had shutdown. All I knew is that one of two things were likely to happen; we’d either be slammed and busy all day, or it’d be completely empty. A usual Friday consisted of a couple hundred kids in and out throughout the day, but on this particularly day, we had a total of maybe fifteen. It was a ghost-town. After work, I called my mom on my way home just to update her on what’s going on. At this point, all three of my roommates had left our apartment to go home. I knew I didn’t want to have to stay there alone, but I still had to work. My mom encouraged me to stay the next few days and just see how things would play out. So, as planned, I went to work on Saturday and Sunday. It remained really slow, which again, was weird because weekends are normally busy. It �wasn’t until the end of my shift on Sunday night, that I received an email notifying all of the MVP staff that the gym was going to close for the next two weeks. A sense of relief filled my body because I could finally go home. During this very strange time of uncertainty, all I wanted was to be home and with my family. The following morning, Monday, March 16th, I packed up my car with as much stuff that could fit and drove home to Illinois. Most of my teachers were still trying to get everything online so I didn’t have much to do that week. Just a few assignments here and there. It was only a day or two after I got home, when I received an email stating that the University will be closed for the remaining of the school-year. I could not believe this was happening, it honestly felt surreal. I actually ended up driving back to school on Saturday, March 21st, with my mom so we could move everything out of my apartment. I felt really sad leaving and knowing that I wouldn’t be back until August. I did the math and from the time I got home, it would be 5.5 months until I would be going back to school again. I honestly was very unsure how I felt about that. Fast forward, it is now Thursday, April 23rd and I just completed my last final. I spent the last month of my semester learning through an online format and I have mixed reviews about it. Some of my teachers made the course easier by removing an assignment here and there or allowing you to use your notes on an exam. I definitely appreciated these teachers because, as they emphasized over and over, all they wanted was to create a relaxed environment during this time of great stress and uncertainty. Other teachers kept their syllabus as is, which was fine because it was all very manageable. I definitely think I would have learned and retained more information if it had been through in-class lectures. Although, to say the least, I still completed my courses, learned a lot, and maintained a 4.0 GPA. �As far as quarantine has gone though, I only have one word: boring. I truly don’t know what I am going to do now that school is over. I wouldn’t say I enjoy school, but it kept me on a schedule and gave me something to do every day. A part from school, in order to stay busy, I try to exercise every day. I normally go for a run every morning because it not only motivates me to be productive throughout the rest of the day, but it also is a great stress-reliever for me. Additionally, I try to do something creative once a day. Whether it be baking, coloring, or doing a puzzle, I like to incorporate a little bit of fun into each day. This is honestly such a scary time to be alive, I know it’s a year in my life that I will never forget. When I heard that school was moving online, I packed up a few things and all the necessary school work materials and went home. Many of my belongings are still across the state, but since I am doing nothing outside of my house, I have found that I do not really feel the need to have them. I think that I was lucky with the courses I was taking this semester because the transition to online was pretty smooth. However, I was in a fieldwork class and I obviously was unable to continue to go to my site and get the experience that I had been able to get in the first few weeks of the semester. I think that I am not retaining information as well because it is much harder to find motivation to study while being at home instead of school. Many of my professors were very good about communicating and sending out emails and making this difficult situation a little more bearable. As I have been talking to other students, it seems like not everyone is having as much success as I am, as they counted on resources and in person communication and explanations that are now much harder to get. Before I came home, I had a job at the local domino’s pizza, but decided to leave and come home because I did not want to be interacting with people and delivering their pizzas. I am very fortunate at home and both of my parents were able to transition to working at home and are still able to do their jobs. No one around me has gotten sick and needed COVID testing, however a couple of my friends at different schools knew students who tested positive. Going to grocery stores or anywhere in public is a really weird experience for me right now. Everyone is wearing masks and it feels so strange being around this new standard. I have noticed a lot of new behaviors, like people crossing the street to avoid each other on the sidewalk as people walk outside. Something that has been going on in my community is that people have put up Christmas lights and other kinds of decorations to help try and cheer people up. My family has not faced any severe shortages of anything we desperately need and grocery stores are better stocked now than they were at the beginning of our lockdown. I am glad that the people near me are taking the appropriate precautions to help stop the spread and do our part to keep people safe. They came up to Allendale and helped my sister and I pack and move the day the shelter in place order was given. Since my mother is a nurse my sister and I couldn’t move back home out of the fear of getting sick. We were forced to move up-north until classes were over because this was the only place that had internet, which we needed to finish our online classes. I struggled a lot with my online classes because some of my professors were not lecturing and forcing us to learn everything on our own. This resulted in me being swamped with additional readings and assignments. Since classes moved online professors were assigning way more work than what would have been assigned if we were still taking in person classes. Also, they made the exams were extremely hard. I found myself studying substantially more than I ever did and still receiving bad grades, due to time restraints and extremely difficult questions. I know both my friends and I became extremely unmotivated after a few weeks and became very overwhelmed by everything, it felt like we were drowning. I was a part of the GVSU swim club and everything was canceled once the school shut down. There were no more practices or team bonding because a lot of people moved home and the pool and gym were closed. I am stuck up north with just my younger sister and I absolutely hate it. I have been in quarantine with her and my dogs for an entire month and I could not wait to finish my classes so I could move back home with my parents. My parents really miss being away from us, they have come up every other weekend and dropped some food off with us and leaving us each time is very hard on them, my mother especially. This pandemic but a lot of strain on my relationship with my boyfriend. But I was able to see him and clear everything up but the isolation has made me go stir crazy. I had a job working as a home aide with an individual who has muscular dystrophy. She had to move home because of this virus since she is extremely immunocompromised. Me and six other girls on staff all lost our jobs when this happened. I was unable to collect any unemployment from the state of Michigan and I was also ineligible to receive a stimulus check since my parents still claim me as a dependent. I was donating plasma while I still lived in Allendale but since I have moved I have no way of bringing in an income to pay my bills. Currently no one in my family is sick but we did have a scare with my mother. She had a high fever two times as was turned away twice from work because of it. Two days ago she went somewhere to be tested for COVID and just today we received the negative test results. But she still has to go back and work at the hospital where she is constantly in contact with COVID patients so we worry about her health. We also worry about my grandma’s because they are both extremely high risk for contracting this virus. They have been in quarantine since the shut down and my parents drop off food at their houses so they don’t have to go grocery shopping and put themselves at risk. I used to work as a nursing technician for Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids and I actually quit one year prior to this outbreak. When I worked there I never experienced any problems with having PPE availability but those resources weren’t scarce then. I do have a friend who still works there as a nurse technician though and she says that they barely have any PPE to go around. She doesn’t even get a N95 for her 12 hour shifts. She is supposed to wear one of those basic surgical masks for her entire shift and they are only supposed to be used for a max of 30 minutes. What was that experience like, what kind of help did you have? Do you still have personal belongings on campus? · I did have to move off campus suddenly. I was just finishing my shift at a clinic off campus when I 4 missed calls from my mom. This was 4 days after school was switched online and about a week before governor Whitmer called the official shut down. I was planning to stay at my off-campus townhouse, but my parents were terrified that I wouldn't be able to come home. I thought this was an overreaction, but did not want them to worry. As soon as I got home from my shift I packed a giant suitcase from when I initially moved in and left ASAP. I have not been at my town-house since, and still paying rent, and most of my things are still there. I would like to go back to see my friends or even grab a few more things, but my hometown is 3 hours away. · How are your online classes going? What kinds of messages have you received from professors? How are other students handling the changes? How are you handling it? Switching to online classes has been a challenge, but has also taught me new skills that I will use in the future. My professors have been very encouraging, but it is also clear that they are frustrating as well. Many of them want this whole situation to end possibly even more than the students. This is understandable due to the fact that they had little time to prepare online instruction, they want the in-person learning experience, and they have families of their own that they have to handle while also handling their teaching jobs. My peers see to be dealing with the new changes similarly. I believe the biggest issues are not having a set and busy schedule, staying motivated, and not being able to spend time with each other like we used to. I have been struggling immensely, but I'm trying to stay positive and continue to obtain the education that I am paying for. Are you involved in student organizations, sports or clubs? How has COVID-19 and campus response affected those? · I am on the board as VP for anatomy and neuroscience club. We have not discussed much regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, but it does leave many things unanswered such as elections and what we are going to do in the future. Our current president for both clubs does not plan on returning to the board next year so we will need to talk soon to discuss future options. What is happening in your daily life at home? How are your parents/friends/partners/etc. Doing? · �Since I have been home the days go by extremely fast; before I knew it we were already 6 weeks into the lockdown. The whole pandemic situation has taken a toll on my mental health, and I know I am not alone in this. I am the type of person to constantly stay busy, but now I have a strange feeling of being overwhelmed but also not being busy enough. My parents and niece that I live with have been struggling as well. My 8-year old niece usually has a friend over everyday and thrives in school, but now all I hear is “I'm hungry” and “I'm bored.” She is also struggling because she cannot have visitation with her parents and has been very emotional. My dad has ADD and is currently not working due to the circumstances, so he is driving the whole house crazy to say the least. My mom has been very stressed trying to take care of everyone like she always does while going through the added struggles of COVID-19. We are having a bit of a scare at the moment with my mom because she may have the virus, but it seems to be a mild version of it. The hospital did not have enough tests and her fever was at 100 degrees for 4 days when they required it to be 101 degrees in order to test. My mom and I are close so it is nice to have her through this to give each other sanity. My family still try to have some normalcy such as game nights, movie nights, and everyone getting some alone time, but not having a set schedule is still difficult. I know having a schedule has affected my friends too, but we make sure to skype, watch movies over skype, and have made a book club for us to destress together. Getting COVID testing? · My mom may have the virus, but the hospital would not test her because her fever was not high enough even though it was consistent for 4 days. I am a junior and live in off campus housing at Enclave in allendale so I was able to stay where I live. With classes being all moved online I felt overwhelmed at first. It seemed most of my teachers were overwhelmed too. Assignments seemed to pile up quickly within the first two weeks online. The weeks following slowed down and I felt I was caught up. My classes have continued to not feel too overwhelming but it is definitely different than attending class in person. My professors have all been very supportive during this time and fairly accommodating to any issues. I work at Allendale Biggby and I remained in Allendale after school was closed because Biggby was still open. I worked until we were closed on March 23rd and then I moved home with my parents, sister, and grandmother. Daily life was a lot of fun things together or household tasks. I helped organize my dad’s office, cleaned out our barn, and played a lot of Clue. Time at home really flew by and it was nice to spend time with my family while everyone was off work. Everyone's a little stressed about money but trying to stay positive and realize everyone is going through this as well. Eventually, my work reopened on April 13th after putting in more precautionary measures like plexiglass. Biggby never technically had to close because we are considered take out food and beverage but they wanted to make it safer for the workers and customers. So now I am back in Allendale and back to work. As for my friends, many are working from home and we all just miss hanging out and going out. We’ve kept in contact via text, facetime, and even Zoom. I personally do not know anyone with symptoms or anyone that actually has the virus, thankfully. My family has been working hard on trying to quarantine and social distance as much as possible. When going to the store we have been wearing gloves and masks and wiping �everything down when it comes into the house. There have been many shortages at all grocery stores. Mostly cleaning products, hand sanitizers, and toilet paper. It is crazy how much people are freaking out about toilet paper. Everything at stores now has limits on how many things you can buy. Milk and eggs mostly have a limit of one or two as well as toilet paper. This year, I am a sophomore and I was very excited for the season to start. As a team, we worked all fall and winter to be the best version of ourselves to beat our opponents. All of our early morning workouts and tough practices all paid off once season came around. Heading into this year, I was more than thrilled to tackle the season with my teammates. The senior class we had wanted to leave a positive and historical mark on this program by the time they left. All their motivational speeches, hard work on and off the field and dedication to this program really showed. I believed we could win a GLIAC ring this year and we were going to make it to the NCAA tournament. Unfortunately, our time was cut short. When the COVID-19 first hit the news, we were worried what it may bring, however, we never thought it would end our entire season. Schools across the country were starting to end spring seasons and we were scared when our last practice or game would be. On Thursday, March 12, 2020 our season was cancelled by the NCAA. I do not have any words to explain how our team felt that day. It was just a normal day and we just finished a normal practice. Everything was great until our head coach called us over and before she could even say anything, we all noticed the tears in her eyes. Our entire mood went from perfectly fine to devastated within a few seconds. We could not believe our season was over. We just returned from having an amazing start to our season going 3-1 in Missouri. We lost a hard battle against The University of Indianapolis but we created history beating Lindenwood University who was a top ten team. That week, we were preparing to play two teams in our conference which we were excited to finally be able to play at home. COVID-19 took away our season we were all so prepared for. I am very upset that our �season is done, however, I am more upset that I will never be able to play a game with that senior class ever again. They had such an amazing impact on this program and we were going to make history at Grand Valley this year. I miss being with my teammates and being out on that field with them. My parents were very adamant that they wanted me home with them during this time. They also said that if I didn’t come home soon they didn’t want me to come at all since they were worried that I would later be exposed to the virus and not able to travel. I didn’t need much help bringing any of my belongings home since I live in an apartment off campus so I didn’t need to completely move out. The tough part was deciding exactly what necessities I needed to bring home since I didn’t know the next time that I would be back at my apartment. Although, at the time I was packing things I only thought I would be gone for a few weeks so I didn’t bring much home. The transition to online classes has been both easy and tough for me. The online classes are easier I think because most of my professors have changed all of our quizzes and exams to open notes. Although, I will say that statistics is not easy to learn online. I am more of a visual learner so without seeing my professor go through examples on the board, it is tough. My professors have been sending out almost an email a day and I can tell that they are trying to be very helpful. I think that the adjustment is just as difficult for them as it is for us as students. When I was on campus I wasn’t involved in any student organizations, sports, or clubs but I bet the students who were must be really missing their hobbies. During this quarantine I have been spending a lot of time with my parents. Since I'm at my apartment most of the time during the school year I see them as much as I can. It has been nice getting to spend this time with them but sometimes we get sick of eachother and need space. There isn’t much to do to “get space” so I usually just watch movies in my room to give myself some alone time. I wish that I could spend time with my hometown friends since they are all home from college but I also understand that social distancing is very important right now. I am �thankful that my friends and family are all healthy and being safe. Although, my dad is considered to have underlying medical conditions with his high blood pressure so we are being extra careful to stay germ free in our household. I have two jobs lined up for me when I am home. One is working at a pool so that is strictly for the summer. The other job is working as a host at Applebee’s and as of right now, Applebee’s is only taking pick up orders so they don’t need hosts to work. I do not know if the pool will even be opening up this year due to the virus. I also don’t know when Applebee’s will be opening up either. If neither of them open soon then I won’t have a job this summer, let alone two. My parents are not working right now either. My mom is an occupational therapist and works in nursing homes so when more and more cases started to arise she chose to take a leave of absence. My dad owns his own cement company in Detroit, which usually opens April 1st, but since it isn’t considered an essential business he has not been able to work. When we go grocery shopping we wear masks and gloves in the store. That seems to be the new norm these days. When we get home from the grocery store we use lysol wipes to wipe down all of the groceries before we bring them inside our house. We haven’t been experiencing any supply shortages recently. Although, when the cases in Michigan started to increase we did have a hard time finding things like toilet paper and paper towels since people were buying in bulk. I believe that overall the switch to online courses will negatively impact the grades of many students attending GVSU. Many people benefit from faceto-face traditional lectures for many reasons including being more attentive, hands-on learning, and many more unsaid reasons. Although, I do believe the switch to online lectures was the best decision in this unprecedented situation to maintain the health and safety of students. Personally, my online classes have been going just fine but there are subjects in which I can tell I am falling behind and not comprehending the information as deeply as I would normally. It has been the hardest to switch over my chemistry lecture, lab, and my cadaver lab. Regarding chemistry it is so much harder to learn the information and make connections between all of the concepts when learning virtually than in person because you can ask questions and often go in more depth to the topics. Labs in general have been very hard to switch online because they are hands on, but I believe the professors have done a great job at attempting to bring as much online as they could. Next, my professors have been great regarding the messages I have received and the support they are willing to give. All of my professors have been sending emails out multiple times a week with updates, announcements, support, and due dates for material, so we don’t miss any assignments. The professors have offered help regarding the class material and also have given us extra resources for outside of class for help with mental health and other related issues. Overall, I believe the staff at GVSU has done a great job at accommodating material and lectures during this time. I am very grateful for that because without them and their enormous efforts to put these classes online this semester could have panned out much worse for many students. In regard to student organizations, I participate in the Pre-PA Club. The closure of campus and COVID-19 has caused our meetings to be cancelled since Mid-March through the end of the school year. This included our normal scheduled meetings, extra smaller group meet ups, and planned tour trips to various PA schools, including GVSU’s PA school. Our executive board has done a great job reaching out to us, keeping us updated about what is going on, and even transitioned some aspects of the club online. After GVSU made the transition to online courses on Wednesday March 11, I quickly moved off campus the next day. This is because students living in on-campus housing facilities were told to move out by the end of that week. However, at this time, the university was only planning on having courses online for two weeks, so a few weeks later, I had to drive three hours back to GVSU to move out the rest of my things. Luckily, my parents were able to help me with this process, as they were also working from home. Moving off campus in the middle of the semester and transitioning to online courses was definitely a whirlwind of an experience. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, I had to cope with new losses which was difficult for me. Specifically, one of the most significant events was the cancellation of my study abroad trip to Ghana this summer. I am currently a sophomore and I had been looking forward to this trip since the beginning of freshman year. This year, I applied to the competitive study abroad program, was accepted, and already began planning a number of things. Aside from the trip, there were other events and activities on campus that I was looking forward to as well. So, not only am I missing out on these experiences, but I am now completing 15 credit hours of schoolwork online. I am an extremely focused and dedicated student. I spend a lot of time studying and completing schoolwork in order to get good grades. With that being said, I like face-to-face learning and being able to utilize opportunities such as office hours, tutoring services, etc. While I am still finishing the semester strong, I will admit that it is has been difficult to find motivation for online classes. However, all of my professors have been supportive in the process, sending encouraging messages along the way. Currently, my biggest fear is that we will continue to have online courses in the fall as well. Aside from school, my daily life at home has been uneventful. I spend a majority of my days studying and completing assignments for school. My mom and I have also been going on walks, watching a new TV series, and working on puzzles. I must admit that my daily life is getting boring. I am a member of the Pre-Physician Assistant Club on campus, so I have attended a couple virtual meetings at home as well. The other clubs that I am involved in on campus have not continued their meetings and events during this time. Furthermore, while I did not have a job on campus, I am scheduled to work at a nearby nursing home in a couple of weeks to occupy my �time. I worked there last summer as well and since I am no longer studying abroad, this is my “plan B” for the summer. I am hoping to attend Physician Assistant (PA) school, so I am required to have a large number of patient contact hours. However, I am becoming incredibly nervous about going back to work because there have been many positive cases of COVID-19 at the facility for both employees and residents. My family and I are currently healthy, and I would like to keep it that way. Luckily, the facility is providing the necessary PPE including masks, gloves, and goggles. Lastly, I want to address my family’s experience in getting everyday items such as groceries and household goods. My parents and I have had to be creative with our meals since we no longer have the option of going to a restaurant. We go to the grocery store about once a week in order to get food and other household products if they are in stock. There are many shortages of these basic goods including toilet paper, paper towels, and cleaning supplies. My family is almost out of disinfecting wipes, so our next project is to make our own wipes with paper towels, water, rubbing alcohol, and dish soap! Also, there have been various food products out of stock as well including pasta noodles, flour, butter, etc. Plus, we are limited to only one type of meat at a time due to the high demand. Luckily, a friend of ours sewed masks for us, so we can wear those to the grocery store. In the near future, I think that we will be required to wear masks in public. This has definitely been an unexpected experience that has required both major and minor adjustments. Recently, I attended a virtual lecture about how to stay engaged in the transition to online learning. The lecturer recommended that we use this experience as a time for personal growth and development. With that being said, I am trying to think about the positive aspects of quarantine, so after this semester is finished, I am going to start developing a plan for my future. I plan to solidify the PA programs that I want to apply to and begin working on my personal statement (since I have extra free time!). The waiting room is empty when they first arrive. What is normally bustling with people is now dead silent except for the hum of the computers and the classical music playing in the back. The new recommendations from the CDC and the ADA have turned the usually friendly atmosphere into a cautious and wary space that smells of harsh cleaners and medical supplies. �It’s as though all trust has been tossed through the window. In addition to updating medical forms, patients now have a three question form in regards to their social distancing habits and any symptoms they may be experiencing. If that wasn’t enough, before and after each encounter with a patient, all surfaces are wiped down repeatedly. The employees who work the front desk cannot greet patients with a smile, as they are wearing level three surgical masks and gloves. These new barriers are not only physical but also emotional. �As everything else changes, one thing that has remained the same is the sterilization technique. After instruments are used they are placed in the Ultrasonic Cleaning System. After soaking for the designated time, they are placed in self-sterilization pouches so they can be placed in the Autoclave. The Autoclave heats up the pouches to 121°C to ensure all instruments are sterile. With everything that is going on, it is comforting to know that some things are still the same. �On a typical week day these rooms are full of people, conversation, music and proper oral hygiene instruction. Now, there is only one occupied room at a time. The music and instruction remain the same, but the topic of conversation has shifted. The only thing people want to talk about is the pain that motivated them to make an appointment, the lack of necessary supplies, who is sick and when the shutdown might end. Any older patient who arrives requires constant reassurance that the environment is sterile and all other new regulations are in place, as they are extremely anxious. These conversations are draining as we try to focus on the positive and encourage our patients. �Limbo is any doctor’s least favorite place for patient files. This is where all patients who do not have any future appointments are organized. Each addition to the shelf is like a stab through the heart and as each day of quarantine gets longer, more charts are added to the shelf. Only emergency appointments can be made so any preventative and cosmetic appointments must be delayed until further notice. This is especially heartbreaking because some of the preventative appointments are needed to help people prevent these emergency appointments. Some diagnoses like periodontal disease might seem minor but these symptoms are actually extremely important to the overall oral health of a patient as can affect tooth and bone loss. As a student at Grand Valley State University during my Junior year, I had the opportunity to partake in a course called “Fieldwork in Exercise Science”. This was not a typical college course in the way that each student was able to go out into the field they desire to pursue and observe the current professionals. I am pursuing physical therapy, so I was placed at Advent Physical Therapy in Grandville, Michigan. This particular day I was making my commute from my off-campus apartment in Allendale, Michigan to the clinic. I cannot remember the exact date, but it was sometime early in January 2020. My typical routine was to listen to the morning show of “Mojo in the Morning” on the radio station 104.5 SNX. Just as I pulled into the clinic parking lot, I heard them talking of this virus that supposedly came from China. This show was known for making people laugh with various jokes, so the virus at the time came off as another joke. They discussed how people were not going to want to drink the beer, Corona, in fear of contracting this “silly” disease. I walked into the clinic and asked the physical therapists there if they had heard about this disease. They proceeded to tell me they had and that they were not too worried about its effects. Again, kind of like the radio, we all sort of laughed it off. In the few weeks that passed after the initial announcement, I heard very little about the virus. Spring forward to Grand Valley’s spring break March 2-6. I did not have a trip planned this year, so I went back home to Davison, Michigan which is located on the east side of the state, about 20 minutes from Flint. My family members discussed the virus casually, nothing too seriously, but came to the conclusion that it is nothing to worry about. I watched my friends on social media travel all throughout the world, although most went to Florida. The next week, I returned to my apartment in Allendale ready to tackle the rest of the semester. On Monday March 9, 2020, buzz started floating around the physical therapy clinic and throughout my college classes about the virus. It had been heard that there were some colleges around the United States that were cancelling in-person classes and transitioning to online learning for the remainder of the semester. Again, this was sort of a joke to us, but starting to become a reality that Grand Valley could do this. �Flash to Wednesday March 11, 2020. I was in the clinic when we got word that Michigan State University had made the decision to cancel classes and finish the remainder of the semester online. At this point, it was becoming more of a reality that Grand Valley could do the same. Later on that day, I went to class in Mackinac Hall. My professor, Danielle Terpstra, began class by showing us where online material would be found in the event that we transitioned online. We had a good 15-minute conversation including questions about how this all would happen. She shared with us that she only knew as much as we did, which was not nearly as much as I would have wanted. During this week, we had gotten several emails from different university departments and the president, Philomena Mantella. They all stated that they were in direct communication with the health department and assured us they were taking this very seriously. At this point in the week there were several other Michigan universities that had cancelled which lead me to believe Grand Valley was right behind them. Sure enough, later that day on March 11, Grand Valley sent out an email detailing their course of action. They had decided to cancel classes for the remainder of the week and begin on Monday March 16 remotely. I still think the severity of this virus had not set in. There were many students who thought this was unnecessary and more of an annoyance rather than a procedure put in place for our protection. Again, at this point I do not think much of Michigan understood the severity that we know to this day, including myself. The president, Donald Trump, started making recommendations not to congregate in larger masses. Eventually that dwindled down, to where we are today on April 20, 2020. We are told today not to interact with anyone we do not live with unless we are essential workers or must conduct essential business. It is also being recommended that if we must go out, we wear proper protection in the form of a mask. All of the non-essential businesses are closed which include: gyms, spas and salons, landscaping businesses, contractors (only emergency calls), and small local businesses just to name a few. Restaurants were also mandated to close their dining rooms, while still providing take out and delivery. Although this is true, there are many local restaurants in Davison and the surrounding areas that had to close due to financial struggles during this time. �My mother, Shawn Dunham, is deemed essential because she is the manager of Dort Financial Credit Union right here in Davison. At first, the credit union was open as usual for business which allowed anyone at any time to walk in and conduct their business. This frightened my mother and her employees, along with the rest of my family. There was no proper protection for the employees from the members and vice versa. Eventually, they closed their lobby down and required members to make an appointment to seen. They continued to conduct business, but just kept restricting the amount of people in the building. Today, there is a “sneeze guard” located at the reception desk and in two of the member service representatives. Do not be fooled, the sneeze guard was not as protective as you think. It was a clear shower curtain hanging from the ceiling, but I suppose it was better than nothing. There are now procedures in place that require the members to state their reasoning for an appointment. In the event that it can be done over the phone, an employee will call them instead of having them come in. My mother now has stated they typically only see three to five members a day. My father, Kurt Dunham, is an electrical project manager who runs the east side of Michigan through the company Consolidate Electrical Contractors which is based out of Lansing, Michigan. In the first few weeks, they were not worried about the shutdown. They thought they most certainly would be considered essential, because electricity is certainly essential. Well, they were sorely wrong. My father got word that he would be laid off and would need to claim unemployment. This was a very scary time for my family, because we had been in this position before. My father had been laid off several times before getting the position he has today. Each time this occurred, we struggled financially since my mother was the only one bringing home money to support a family of four. The day my father came home and told us he has to file for unemployment, was a rather scary day. Within the next few days, he tried to file. Then he tried again. And again, and again. The website would not allow him past certain questions and he was directed to a phone number to call. He called at least one hundred times to no avail. The familiar feeling of uncertainty started to sink in. Eventually, he sat down at 8:30 pm on a weekday and was able to fill everything out. He is now getting unemployment but is unsure as to how long this will last. �Personally, this lockdown has been everything but fantastic. It has not even come close to what I expected would happen. I am now taking this virus very seriously and taking all the precautions that I am able to, but it is very difficult. First off, I am very into fitness and becoming stronger physically and mentally. Since my gym has been closed for more than a month, I have a great sense of sadness. I miss my trainer, Marc Dearing, and the gym members that I see there every day. My mom and I have been going to our gym, Next 5 in Davison, since May 2019. The only day we rest is on Sundays so as you can imagine, this has become a huge part of our lives. Marc has been great with all of his members throughout this shut down. He provides us with at home workouts every single day (except Sunday’s of course) on a private Facebook group he created. Along with this, him and his wife, Kathy, go live on Facebook to do the workouts at 7 am each day. This seems to keep us all connected enough, but it is nowhere near close to the amount of connection we get in the gym. Secondly, it has been very hard to not see anyone else I do not live with. I am in a threeyear long relationship with my boyfriend, Brenden Wardlaw. We went to high school together, so we are from the same town. In fact, he only lives about three minutes from me which makes it difficult to know he is so close. When we are in school, he attends Davenport University, so even then we are used to seeing each other on the weekends. Now, that has been ripped away from us, I find myself to be very distraught each day. We are used to going places and making incredible memories but that has been placed on hold. I think this has a major role in the deterioration of my mental health during the quarantine. Technology has been great in the way that we can video chat, but the feeling is indescribable. It almost makes me sadder because I want to be there with him in person in a time of struggle. Although this is all true, we both decided at the beginning of this that it is best to stay in our own homes for the protection of both of our families. Brenden’s father is still recovering to this day from an almost two-month long hospitalization from a total colectomy. His body is not fully recovered and we both would feel terrible if somehow this virus got to him. I have several other family members that I am very close with that I cannot see during this to keep them safe. My grandfather, Larry Swadling, has been battling multiple myeloma for 18 years and has a very weak immune system. I am �used to seeing him and my grandmother, Corrine, just about every week. It has been very hard to only see them through a videocall. Lastly, a huge way this has affect me personally is the way that college classes are being held. Originally, I thought it would be fine and my professors told us that we would do a synchronous meeting through our blackboard site. This only lasted a week for some and for others, our original plans changed completely. One of my professors who I will leave unnamed, did not have Wi-Fi at their house. Due to this, we were given a slideshow and basically told to learn the material ourselves. This was a more difficult class, so as you can imagine, I became very upset with the organization. Even though this was happening, we were still held to the highest standard to learn what they wanted us to. Another one of my professors did a synchronous session for the first week. Beyond this, they stated that the university recommended they not hold the sessions because students may have obligations. After this, again, we were sent PowerPoints to learn by ourselves. This became very frustrating to me. It had caused many mental breakdowns and tears because I felt that I was being robbed of these college courses. I reached out to a few of my friends and they expressed they were feeling the same way. In my mind, I thought the professors should still hold the meeting and record the session. While I understand some individuals can learn this way, I cannot. Along with all my frustration, I had to realize I am not the only one in this boat. In fact, I am sure that all college students are feeling the burden of online classes. We were uprooted and planted back at our homes, which have many distractions. I have a 14-year old brother who seems to constantly be on my nerves. My father is constantly at home wanting to talk and get things done around the house. What I wanted them to do was to stop talking to me because I was so frustrated with life, that I wanted to take it out on them. These actions were totally not like me because I am very close to my family and always wanting to be involved with them. I felt that nobody understood what I was going through. Nobody �knows that often nights I cry myself to sleep out of fear, anger, uncertainty and sadness. But when I take a step back, they may be going through struggles themselves too. We are all in this together even though we may not know how long this is going to last. At the moment, we are on shutdown until May 1, 2020. As it did before, the shutdown may get extended leading to more emotions and frustrations. I must keep reminding myself that this is uncharted territory, and nobody knows what to expect. The university closed its campuses on March 12, 2020, and quickly moved students out of campus housing. The purpose of the COVID-19 Journaling Project was to document the individual and personal experiences of GVSU’s students, staff, faculty, and the wider community during this time of international crisis. It was mentioned by several of my professors a few days before the switch that it would likely happen, but I did not really think much of it until I received the email about classes being cancelled for a few days and then the return with remote learning. For the most part, all of my professors have been very good about staying in touch with me and their other students. They want their students to be reaching out to them to make sure that everything is going well and to use them as a resource if they need to talk about anything. I think that although this is a new experience for a lot of us as students and faculty, we were able to get through it and handle it together. Along with taking classes, I was involved in a student organization that was affected by COVID-19. I was a part of momentum, which is a student-run dance organization on campus. We hold a show every semester, and the money that we raise from the shows gets donated to a cause we have picked. We had been practicing all semester for our show, which would have been held the last weekend in March. Once online classes were implemented for the remaining of the semester, practices and the show were also cancelled. Unfortunately, we were unable to put on a show and raise money this semester, but we were still able to make the best of the situation. Each group sent in a video of what was completed of their dance, and we were able to watch everyone’s pieces for the semester. For the remaining of the semester, I chose to stay at my off-campus apartment. Two of my other roommates also chose to stay instead of going home. We are trying to live life as normal as possible although it is somewhat hard with our now altered schedules. We have been getting up in the morning to workout together, doing our separate classwork, and then if it is �nice outside, we will try to go for a walk to get out of the house and get some fresh air. I think that with all things considered, I have been able to adjust pretty fast and well to this temporary way of living.
