We are looking for all perspectives - whether you are student, faculty, staff, parent, activist, athlete, artist, or advocate - we want to hear from you! In Our Own Words encourages creativity and provides a medium for women's perspectives to be heard. The journal celebrates and is dedicated to the voices of all who care about women and gender equality. Submissions will be considered for their diversity of thought and ability to spark conversation. Is access to healthy food a right? According to the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights - Article 25 (http://tinyurl.com/3ptty8u), the answer is: YES As we begin this academic year, the pantry in the Women's Center, which was previously overflowing, has already been emptied. We are not alone in this experience. Over the past decade, Child poverty (ages 0-17) in Michigan has risen 64% making it impossible for local organizations to meet all the needs presented to them. (http://tinyurl.com/ 4 28gnxk) According to Annie E. Casey Foundation's "KIDS COUNT in Michigan Data Book" (August 17, 2011), nearly one in four children are living in poverty. One in twenty children is affected by foreclosure. It is important to understand that these are the kinds of situations our students are coming from and must continue to navigate throughout their time on campus.(http://tinyurl.com/3brhzhm) This year, many of our students are no longer eligible to receive Bridge Cards which had helped protect them from food insecurity. The removal of this kind of safety net is difficult to understand when we are part of an economic system that supports agribusiness with over $128 per year to grow crops. At the federal level in 2010, agribusiness spent $58M lobbying congress. In our own state that year, the Michigan Farm Bureau spent over $300,000 on lobbying. In addition to all this money spent on lobbying, billions of dollars are allocated each year to subsidize crops. And yet so many individuals and families are not experiencing the basic human right of having access to food. They are modeled after Greg Tanaka's concept of storytelling, where women come, share and learn. According to Greg Tanaka, "Storytelling is the best way to get people to learn and share across differences." The fireside chats were born out of the Women's Commission but serve to support the mission/vision of Grand Valley State University as it works to model its values of inclusion and equity. HOW DO YOU GET INVOLVED? Make a commitment to attend as many of the fireside chat discussions as possible. It is important that participants show a commitment to the process and actively engage as often as possible. To build on relationships requires trust and ongoing interaction. You can also feel free to bring a friend to have them experience a meeting and try it out! WHAT IS THE FORMAT FOR FIRESIDE CHATS? Each meeting will focus on an aspect of diversity .... religion/spirituality, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, class, etc. There will be a facilitator for each topic and participants are asked to get involved in the dialogue to the extent that they are comfortable. On occasion, there may be a reading or an activity to complete prior to the meeting, if possible. WHEN DO THE FIRESIDE CHATS TAKE PLACE?
