The change limited the center's functions to meetings with staff, receiving resources, participating in programming and using the libraries. Students will no longer be allowed to meet up and socialize inside the center. The change, which took effect on March 15, was made after some students expressed concerns about a "clique"like environment, said Colette Seguin Beighley, assistant director of Grand Valley State University's LGBT Resource Center. The center took several steps to gauge student opinions, holding · focus groups and surveying both students who regularly used the Resource Center and students who did not. Beighley said she and others at the center were aware of the strong student reaction to the change and were working with students to ease their adjustment. "I believe that at first many of the students who hung out in the center daily were confused, hurt and angry," she said. ''That was very painful to see. The center staff made every effort .to be available to have conversations with students in order to support them through this change. Our goal was to help students develop a new way to engage in the mission and vision of the center. We were very committed to maintaining every relationship with the students we serve." Avery GVl Col, nm,sl .. ' .~~ ;; i" . • Remember the cliques and stereotypes we were all so desperately ready to escape when we went to college - jocks, Barbies, geeks, weirdos and inbetweeners? They are the same cliques our parents faced and the same cliques our own children must tackle. What I don't remember in high school was the administration fearing the manifestation of cliques into intimidating masses and then tackling that problem by not allowing anyone to socialize. Cliques are exactly the reason why the LGBT Resource Center is no longer allowing students to "meet-up and socialize" in its lounge area. The article in the Grand Valley Lanthom said the LGBT staff has made every effort to comfort students and support them in understanding the changes made to the LGBT Center policies - what? Typically, you support someone in a choice they have made, not a choice you force them to make. What exactly was going on in the LGBT Center that would warrant such a drastic change? Were people actually comfortable socializing in there, enjoying each others' company? Were they freely and openly discussing important issues that would generally be deemed taboo? I'm describing what should be the function of the LGBT Center. Its whole purpose is to provide resources, space and a safe haven to the LGBT community, and now the groups of people for whom it was meant to be a support system can't even go in there unless they have "official business." The assistant director of the Grand Valley State University LGBT Resource Center claimed the LGBT Center is still "completely committed to having any conversation that is needed with our students." Something that was once extremely personal has become as phony and meaningless. I'm really interested in seeing how this policy is going to really play out. Is the LGBT Center going to give a time limit as to how long it's willing to •have "conversations" with students and then give them a pamphlet and send them on their way? What I likt,about centers such as the LGBT Resource Center and the Woman's Center is their open-door policy, their attentiveness, the accepting, comfortable and safe atmosphere and their willingness to help in any way they can. What's wrong with having a group of regulars that comes in every Monday to sit down and chat it up, and why woulq those groups then be deemed intimidating or disruptive? There's nothing wrong with it. In my mind a newcomer would feel more put off if they see an empty center with tumble weeds blowing by than if they saw a group of cheerful students comfortably conversing with one another. Perhaps the problem is the center needs to expand and have two separate areas: one strictly for "business" and the other for all of us socialites who just can't help but be friendly. A recent $150,000 grant awarded to the center through the Arcu Foundation of Kalamazoo is a te, tam nt to the importan of th c nt r as an du ·ational and so ial r sour· for th local ·ommunity. With issues such as immi ,ration and t ·rrorism saturating th n ws, th term ""diversity,, i , adopting an ever more negative connotation. Linking diversity to difference and difference to danger has been a historical mistak for th U.S. and many nations throughout the world. Organizations and offic s such as th LGB'I R sour· Center ar vital to ·ombaling this domino '.'ff ·t. By e.mphasizing the progr ·' and advantag mad pos ·ibl through an understanding and appreciation of div r ity, such organizations keep society moving forward. The LGBT Resource Center has hosted dozens of programs to educate the campus community on various issues affecting the LGBT community and served as the support system for an untold number struggling to find and accept their identity. Such an offi is a vital n:,sour 'l for many who find them elves social pariahs in an area that prid · it ·elf on its "conse_rvative" nature. To make any impact, however small, in a community with fervent religious, political and social barriers to that issue is a feat that must be recognized. Though only a few years old, the LGBT Resource Center has had much success in the GVSU community and with the assistance of the grant, will be able to continue its efforts to educate and unite people, but on a larger scale. The $150,000 grant will allow the ~enter to enhance its social justice training efforts, build statewide · resources and increase community collaborations and partnerships. Through this role , she oversees the restoration and protection of the Great Lakes . Before accepting the EPA appointment, Dr. Hedman was environmental counsel and senior assistant attorney general in the Illinois Attorney General's office. She previously worked at the Environmental Law and Policy Center in Chicago, and taught environmental law. a �Panelists Moderator Shelley Irwin is a host/producer with WGVU, the local NPR/PBS West Michigan affiliate. Renae Hesselink is a founding member and the past Chair of U.S. Green Building Council West Michigan chapter. She has been with Nichols for 19 years in various positions and is now its Vice President of Sustainability. �i Food and Farming Dr. Wynne Wright is Associate Professor in the Dept. of Community, Ag ricu ltu re , Recreation and Resource Studies at Michigan State University. The program, provided in partnership with the Women's Center, focuses on women and gender issues in the region and explores global feminist perspectives. Participants examine how issues such as reproductive health, education, violence, political representation and participation, Apartheid, and the new democracy intersect and impact the role of women within various societal and class structures. Students divide their time between service learning, academic lectures, and excursions in Johannesburg and Cape Town. In addition to The Apartheid Museum and a tour of Soweto and Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg, students experience the Cape of Good Hope, Boulders National Park, and the Botanical Gardens in Cape Town, and Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. The substantial service-learning component is provided through SHAWCO, a non-governmental organization based in Cape Town. SHAWCO has years of experience guiding students in their work with adults and children in one of six local township centers that focus on education, health, social and community issues. This format allows students to move beyond the classroom and become a part of the communities they are studying. WHEN CAN I GO? This six week program will depart May 9, 2012 and return June 17, 2012. WHERE WILL I LIVE? Students will stay in a privately run residence. WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE? Open to all students who have completed at least one WGS course. GPA of 2.5 and submit a complete application by February 1, 2012. Present in all of the workshops is an opportunity for "storytelling" - modeled after Greg Tanaka's work, author of The Intercultural Campus: Transcending Culture and Power in American Higher Education (2003). The fireside chats were born out of the Women's Commission but serve to support the mission/vision of Grand Valley State University as it works to model its values of inclusion and equity. HOW DO YOU GET INVOLVED? Make a commitment to attend as many of the fireside chat discussions as possible. It is important that participants show a commitment to the process and actively engage as often as possible. To build on relationships requires trust and ongoing interaction. You can also feel free to bring a friend to have them experience a meeting and try it out! WHAT IS THE FORMAT FOR FIRESIDE CHATS? Each meeting will focus on an aspect of diversity .... religion/spirituality, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, class, etc. There will be a facilitator for each topic and participants are asked to get involved in the dialogue to the extent that they are comfortable. Who is impacted? What is the effect on our society? The Price of Pleasure movie viewing and discussion paints both a nuanced and complex portrait of how pleasure and pain, commerce and power, and liberty and responsibility are intertwined in the most intimate aspects of human relations. The program also examines the unprecedented role that commercial pornography now occupies in U.S. popular culture. Raising Voices Against Violence Friday, March 25th 1:00pm 2204 (Pere Marquette) Room, Kirkhof Center, Allendale Campus "Raising Voices Against Violence" uses GVSU students as trained Peer Theatre Educators to present realistic scenarios demonstrating situations of dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. Audience members will be educated and entertained through this interactive performance which unfolds as the audience engages with the actors. The goals of the program are to educate on issues of interpersonal violence; raise awareness; create dialogue; explore options, choices and consequences; and examine different perspectives with the realization that violence affects all types of relationships regardless of socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, race, or other markers of identity. Beyond Words: Your Gendered Experience Senior Project, GVSU Student, Anna Bennett Friday, March 25th 7:00pm Cook-DeWitt Center, Allendale Campus This performance will showcase the creative submissions from GVSU students on the suggested topic of gender and the intersectionality of all types of oppression and/or discrimination. The idea behind this project is similar to that of Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues; that raising awareness of an issue and giving agency to those who are typically silenced can be instrumental in helping to catalyze change. The goal of this performance is to raise consciousness of the varied expressions and experiences of gender. Awareness of difference by itself will not solve a problem, but this performance seeks to begin a dialogue by exposing the audience to viewpoints outside the heteronormative experience. The creative pieces range from monologues and scenes to dances and poetry, and address such topics as sexuality, societal expectations, gendered discrimination and violence, and the healing power of understanding and love. War on Terror and War on Trafficking: How Irrational Panic over Modern Slavery Harms Women Wednesday, March 30th, 5:00pm (reception and discussion to follow) Cook DeWitt Center, Allendale Campus Emi Koyama, a multi-faceted social justice and sex work activist, will talk about her work with LGBT community, anti-racism, sex workers, and the anti-human trafficking movement. Her talks encourage critical thinking and debate, embrace diversity, and emphasize the need to enter into respectful dialogues with others about their social justice issues and needs. Her most recent book of nonfiction, The Events of October: Murder-Suicide on a Small Campus, chronicles the impact on the campus community when a student shot his former girlfriend and then himself in 1999. Gail has taught literature, writing, and women's studies at Kalamazoo College since 1977, and has won the college's awards for excellence in both teaching and scholarship. MARTA L. SANCHEZ Survivor, Author, Advocate & Visual Artist (a component of Take Back The Night) Bobbi Ausubel is a contributor to the That Takes Ovaries book, co-playwright of the That Takes Ovaries (TTO) play and artistic director of the organization . She leads TTO women's empowerment events all across the U.S. and internationally, including in Latin America, Africa and Asia., She uses the TTO model of empowerment in India and along the Nepal-India border to help women and girls in prostitution, including those that have been forced into the sex slave trade . Bobbi was a leader in the Second Wave of the Women's Movement; she is featured in the book Feminists Who Changed America. She brings with her the unique perspective of someone who was active in the evolution of the U.S. women's movement over the last few decades . In the state of Michigan, women are highly underrepresented in political office. This program will give women who have served in elected office an opportunity to talk about their experiences; sometimes as being the only woman at the table. The panel of current and past elected leaders will be facilitated by Shannon Garrett, an expert in women's political leadership.
