Grand Valley State College Charter signing, 1960

Description

Governor G. Mennen Williams signing the bill that established Grand Valley State College as Michigan's 10th state-supported, four-year college on April 26, 1960. Governor Williams appointed nine individuals as members to the first Board of Control. Their first meeting was held in Governor Williams' office on October 17, 1960, where each member was sworn in, and a chairman was elected. Pictured with Governor Williams (seated) are seven members of teh first Board of Control: [Left to right] James Copeland, William Kirkpatrick, Icie Macy Hoobler, Kenneth Robinson, Grace Kistler, L. William Seidman, and Arnold C. Ott. Not pictured are Edward J. Frey and Dale Stafford.
