Native Americans at Nike site, Chicago, Illinois
Black and white photograph of a group of young Native Americans gathered at the abandoned Belmont Harbor Nike missile site in Chicago, Illinois. In the photograph, a group of young people are standing and eating picnic food in the foreground, while crowds are seen standing on top of the grassy hill in the background. In June of 1971, this group of Native Americans and their supporters occupied the abandoned area of Chicago’s Belmont Harbor in the hopes that the site be set aside for housing units for Native Americans as well as a school for Native American children. Scanned from the negative.
