In the photograph, a group of young men are gathered together in the Naumburg Bandshell while listening to the speakers and performers paying their respect to the late Dr. King. A protest poster is hanging above them that reads, "Let Us Protest in Peace for the Man Who Stood for Peace." The photographs taken by Douglas Gilbert on this historic day document New York's reaction to the news of Dr. King's assassination in Memphis, Tennessee, on the previous day.
