Black and white photograph of the memorial rally that took place in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in New York City's Central Park. In the photograph, a crowd of people are gathered together in the park to pay their respect to the late Dr. King and the young adults in the front row can be seen leaning on the stage of the Naumburg Bandhsell where the speakers and performers participated in the memorial service. The photographs taken by Douglas Gilbert on this historic day document New York's reaction to the news of Dr. King's assassination in Memphis, Tennessee, on the previous day.
